Codex: (Coming soon!)

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you and the rest of the platoon were in a debriefing with Colonel Sawyer. Having recovered valuable intel on how Reikland vertical tanks were operated, your platoon was now suddenly in the hot seat. Sawyer eyes the prize you had recovered, a living brain that had been found within a Lynx that you had disabled.

"What in God's green Earth am I looking at?" Colonel Sawyer grunts as he glares at the brain sitting on the table in front of him, suspended in a bubbling, clear fluid you didn't know and didn't wish to know.

"As far as we can tell, it is the primary control unit for Reikland's Lynx vertical tanks." Egan explains as she leans down and taps the glass of the cylinder like a fish tank.

"How's that possible?" Sawyer narrows his eyes, returning his gaze to the scientist. "What could they possibly gain from this?"

"The how is fairly simple to explain." Egan shrugs. "The human nervous system is basically a biological computer. Everything is controlled and dictated by electrical signals. If you can find a way to translate the signals from a biological brain into a mechanical system, it's possible to crew an entire vertical tank with just this single brain. Highly efficient."

"Is it... alive?" Parker frowns. "Like, aware of what's going on?"

"Biologically alive, yes." Egan nods. "Is it conscious? Well, I can't say for sure, there's so much about this system we have yet to understand."

"Those fucking freaks!" Axel bellows. "Cutting out people's brains and shoving into tank like that! They're not human!"

"Pipe down, soldier." Sawyer snaps and turns back to Egan. "We need to pass this intel up to Command as soon as possible. As of now, what's in this room stays in here. Not a single word of this to ANYBODY. Those undead shock troops were bad enough. A reveal like this could totally collapse our morale if not handled right."

Everybody nods in agreement.

"Now, I can't very well leave the front." Sawyer sighs and turns to Chambers, who is also present. "Chambers, you're to deliver this intelligence to Command personally and await further orders."

"Yes sir." Chambers salutes.

"Bannon." Sawyer turns back. "I'm surprised to say this, but your platoon did a damn fine job out there."

"Th-thank you sir." Bannon stammers, not expecting the compliment.

"Don't get used to it. There are still plenty of ways to fuck it up." Sawyer grunts. "Now is a matter of what we do at this stage."

"We're not advancing any farther?" Parker asks.

"We've secured a foothold into Reikland, but honestly, the rest of the line is still a mess. If we go any farther, we risk getting flanked and encircled. At least this way we can check any further Reikland advances." Sawyer grumbles. "However, I do have a special mission for you platoon."

"Special mission, sir?" Bannon frowns, obviously afraid he's having some kind of shit duty piled onto him.

"A diplomatic mission, actually." Sawyer explains. "I hate to say it, but Reikland has the numbers on us, so if we're going to get the upper hand, we're going to need allies, and our diplomats are going to need protection."

"What about the front?" Alex pipes up.

"We'll be holding here. However, if you choose to, you can stay and I'll send another platoon in your place." Sawyer shrugs. "I just figured after being the spearhead you'd want be off the line for a bit."

Bannon turns to you all, uncertainty clearly flowing across his face. You see Parker subtly shake her head in frustration at his indecision.

"Babysitting diplomats sounds like a nice change of pace." You shrug and turn to the rest of the platoon. "Am I right, guys?"

"Allies are always handy." Tarin nods.

"Well, I'd rather take out more of those Reik monsters." Axel hands ball into fists. "But if getting allies improves their chances, I guess I can wait."

"It d-d-doesn't sound to bad. Especially I-If we're off the line..." Alfie mumbles.

"I'm fine with wherever we go." Rock grins.

"I was kid of getting that travel itch, anyways." Alex adds quietly.

At this point, Parker nudges Bannon roughly in the shoulder, snapping him back to reality and he turns to Sawyer.

"We'll accept the special mission, sir." He says with half false bravado. "What do you have for us?"

"Well," Sawyer eyes Bannon warily before pointing to the map in front of him. "As you know, Reikland lies east of Tilea. However, there are two more nations that sit on its northern and southern borders. Ager and Breton."

"The what and what?" Axel frowns.

"I assume you're one of those types who didn't pay attention in geography." Sawyer grumbles. "Damn army keeps lowering its standards. Parker, can you give them a refresher course?"

"Of course, Colonel." Parker steps forward and clears her throat. "Ager lies on Reikland southern border. Unlike our more temperate climate, Ager is mostly jungle. Not very well developed and little infrastructure. However, despite, or more likely because of this, Agerians are quite possibly the most fearsome guerrilla and light infantry fighters in existence. They were actually in a border dispute with Reikland a couple decades back. Tilea donated surplus light VTs to Ager, which they used to great effect."

>>41168164
"And thanks to that, in a addition to their strong tribal traditions, we believe Ager's loyalty can be counted on. You'd be acting as a direct liaison between our forces and theirs to penetrate Reikland's southern border and attack their logistics." Sawyer explains. "But Breton is also a contender. Parker, if you please."

"Certainly." Parker clears her throat again. "Breton is a bit of an oddity. They are the only nation in the world that still practices feudalism style rule. However, they have a very strong warrior culture, and even though their standing army is relatively small and divided among the local lords, they have extremely powerful and well engineered Vertical Tanks."

"Since they've had past disagreements with Reikland, we think we might be able to convince them to join on our side." Sawyer says. "But their nation is far from united. Intel suggests there's more than a few lords supporting Reikland, so things may get dicey there."

"Hmmmmm..." Bannon pauses to think as he stares at the map.

Okay, I hate to say this but I have a huge suspicion votes are being samefagged here. Due to the importance of this decision, I believe I have to implement a FINAL DESTINATION vote.

How this works is that I will number the choices. To make a valid vote, you post the number and ONLY the number with a link to the original post. If there are ANY extra characters or unusual formatting, that vote will not count. You will only have a five minute voting window.

>1. Ager

Remember, post ONLY the corresponding number. You have 5 minutes.

"We'll go to Breton." Bannon finally concludes. "I think that's where we can do the most good."

"Understood." Sawyer nods. "You'll be on the first train there. Get packed and ready to move."

"What about the diplomats?" Bannon asks.

"You haven't gotten it yet?" Sawyer grins. "Breton is a warrior culture. YOU are the diplomats!"

"W-what?!" Alfie gasps.

"Cooooool." Axel laughs.

Tarin merely raises an eyebrow.

"Well, it does make sense." Parker nods. "Bretons pride martial ability above all else. Considering much of their culture is focused around knights and knighthood, it's only natural they'd only respect other vertical tankers."

"Sounds like an interesting place." Rock chuckles.

"We are going to fuck this up, aren't we." You sigh.

"Hey, look on the bright side. Diplomatic fuck ups are the most fun ones!" Axel laughs as he slaps you on the back.

"I'm sure if we do what we do best, blowing up whatever moves, we'll get through fiiiiine." Rock laughs.

"You shouldn't be so negative, Roy." Tarin puts a hand on your shoulder. "At least we get to see new people, go to new places."

"I suppose." You concede. Tarin always did seem to know the right thing to say.

"All right, quit yapping!" Bannon grunts, we got our orders, so let's get moving!"

---

True to Sawyer's words, you and your equipment are all piled onto the first train to Breton. Thankfully, since Breton was still technically neutral in this conflict, it didn't appear that there were any major Reik forces along the border in this area, most likely because they didn't want to risk spooking them with large troop movements.

However, as a side effect, the ride was pretty uneventful, and you find yourself left with not much to do as you watch the empty countryside roll by, distant columns of smoke from battlefields further south marring the otherwise idyllic view. You wonder if maybe you should talk with you platoon mates. Maybe just have some small talk with Axel and Alfie, or even with Rock and Alex. Actually, you didn't really know much about Alex, now that you thought about it. Then again, maybe you could talk to Parker and Bannon to find out more about Breton. Parker seemed to know practically everything, and all you had going for you was your most basic geography lessons.

"So, Rock, I know you're pretty well traveled." You say. "So do you know about Breton? I mean, your take on it. I'm pretty sure Parker knows a lot too, but I get the impression it's from books than from actually being there."

"Well, you'd be right about that." Rock leads back in his seat. He instinctively reaches for a cigarette pauses, suddenly remembering he couldn't smoke in the train. "Yeah, I did a bit of work in Breton. The lords don't really like outsourcing work, but there's some stuff even they're unwilling to do themselves."

"Uh huh." You nod. "So you've met them?"

"A couple, yeah." Rock nods. "But it was YEARS back. There was a bit of a feud between two houses, Artois and Sylvan."

"What kind of feud?" Tarin asks, leaning forward. Looks like she was getting interested in the story as well.

"Oh, typical royal rivalry and all." Rock shrugs. "They're both pretty high up there in terms of the feudal hierarchy. As individual lords, they hold the most lands and have the largest armies. Have dozens of lesser lords under their command, too. Problem is, Artois is pro-Tilea and Sylvan is pro-Reikland."

Parker's briefing begins to echo in your mind. Rock looks at you and correctly guesses what you're thinking.

"Yeah, small world, huh? Most likely we'll be heading to Artois, or at least a lord under him to try and make our case to the King."

"Why appeal to the King? Why not to Artois himself?" You ask.

"Well... Breton politics are a bit complicated." Rock shrugs. "Contrary to public belief, the King isn't the biggest guy on the block. He happens to be the Lord with the most clout, that all the other lords nominally pledge loyalty to, but since all these lords have their own lands and armies, if they don't feel like listening to the King, there's not too much the King can do about it. Actually, there's been a lot of royal turnovers in the past centuries, so I'm sure the King is wary not to piss off his subjects. My guess is, he's not going to listen directly to any foreigners. He's going to wait and see where public opinion among his lords will swing before making a call."

"Sounds tough to be the king." Tarin notes.

"Sometimes being at the top isn't the best place to be." Alex points out. "Makes you the biggest target."

"So how we do we come into all of this?" You ask.

"Well, if there's one thing all the Lords can agree on, it's chivalric combat. They're pretty old fashioned like that." Rock chuckles. "In the olden times, they used to be feared for their heavy cavalry and armored knights. As times progressed, they moved on to Vertical Tanks as their new steeds. My guess is they'll have us beat a few Lords in submission to prove our 'worthiness' over the Reiks."

"These people sound crazy." You blink.

"From a certain point of view." Alex shrugs. "Though I guess compared to other cultures, Bretons are pretty out there. I'm actually a bit surprised they managed to transition to modern times with such an unwieldy form of government."

"Hey, anything can work as long as you believe in it hard enough." Rock grins. "Breton is a land long shrouded in tradition and belief."

"Well, that sounds good and all." Tarin interrupts. "But you said there were pro-Reikland factions in Breton. What kind of opposition can we expect?"

"Well, composition-wise, the lords' personal armies aren't too different. Usually it's a large number of peasant conscripts centered around a core of Vertical Tank, almost none of which are identical, actually. Each one is personalized to the knight that rides it. No such thing as a mass production unit in Breton."

"Dang." You whistle. "So it's all custom jobs?"

"That's right." Rock nods. "Every VT in Breton is unique. Might be packing Reikland tech too. As for actual Reiklanders in Breton? I'm sure they have their own delegation there to make their case. But you'd have to talk to Parker about that."

"Actually, I've been meaning to ask..." You turn to Alex, "what brought you into the Tilean army? You've never really told us or anything."

"Ah, well, nobody really seems to ask." Alex shrugs. "I figured it would be a change of pace from my old life."

"Old life?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, when I was younger, I had a bit of erm, what do you call it, 'wanderlust.'" Alex explains. "Traveled the whole continent, going from country to country, town to town. Probably spent two to three years on the road, never staying in one place for more than a day."

"Why?" You ask.

"Dunno." Alex merely shrugs. "I guess because I felt like it? I just had this urge to get on the road and just... go."

"So I'm sure you saw a lot of places in your life." Tarin says. "Was Reikland included?"

"Well, that was a bit of a tough one, but I did manage to see a bit of Reikland." Alex nods. "Very dreary place, actually. While the countryside is pretty nice, the cities are... I can't quite find the right word for it... lifeless? Haunted? I just felt a lot of general unease while I was there, as if everything was being watched."

"Sounds like a wonderful place." You frown.

"I'm also technically a criminal fugitive in Reikland too, funnily enough." Alex notes.

"Come on, you can't just drop a hook like that and leave us hanging." You grin. "What happened?"

"Well, it was the second year in my road trip." Alex shrugs. "I slipped into Reikland through a forest road and was touring the countryside. It's actually rather nice out there, not too much different from Tilea. But like I said, it wasn't until I got into the cities that things started to feel off. I kind of made the poor decision of making a stop in their capital, Reikscenter. Not very imaginative, I know."

"Christ, that's a horrible name!" You snort.

"Well, we can always rename it when we capture it." Tarin says.

"Hah! That's not a bad idea, kid!" Rock laughs.

"Anyways." Alex continues. "Like I said, it was very lifeless. Lots of bare concrete, people barely interacting with each other. I got the feeling it was the type of place that encouraged people informing on each other."

"Informing on what?" You ask, already dreading the answer.

"Crimes, of course. Or the suspicions of them." Alex grunts. "And in Reikland, 'crime' has a very BROAD definition. Apparently, in my case, somebody reported me as 'sexually deviant.'"

"Sexually deviant?" You blink.

"You don't strike me as particularly promiscuous." Tarin observes.

"I'm not. According to what I was told when they arrested me, I was accused of crossdressing. Apparently they had trouble telling my gender on first look, which is apparently a bad thing in Reikland. Can you believe that? How can they not tell?"

"Ummm, truth be told, I honestly couldn't tell, either." You laugh awkwardly.

"R-really?" Alex's eyes widen. "Is... is it really not that obvious?"

"No, not really." Tarin says bluntly. "I figured it was better not to ask to respect your privacy."

Alex, now completely mortified, glances to Rock for some measure of support.

"Uhhhh, truth be told, I wasn't too sure either." He chuckles awkwardly. "I kinda just rolled along with it."

"You... you all..." Alex groans and droops down.

"Yeah, uh sorry about that." You frown. "We're honestly not too sure. It just... it can go either way."

"I guess it's a bit fortunate that Roy ended up being insensitive enough to ask this straight up." Rock laughs. "So, will ya spill the beans?"

"You know what... I think I'll just let you all squirm for a bit. Just as a bit of revenge." Alex huffs.

"Awww, don't be like that." Rock groans.

"ANYWAYS, I'm going to continue with the story." Alex grumbles. "So, they ship me off to this asylum place for 'social deviancy' and try to process me. The fact that I was a Tilean who was in the country illegally did not exactly help my case..."

"Yeah, I can figure why that would be a bad thing." You frown. "So they just locked you up?"

"Oh yeah, cell, bars, the whole jail works." Alex nods.

"How did you get out?" Tarin asks curiously.

"Well, I'm not too proud to admit this. but that wasn't exactly the first time I got arrested. There were more than a few times where I may not have had full knowledge of the local laws and statutes and unknowingly broke a few of them..."

"And they never got sorted out? Usually people get released after all the facts come to light." Rock frowns.

"Yeah, well, I got that rule where I never spend more than night in one place at any time, right? So uh, I always prepared measures, like a universal lockpick I can hide in my mouth under my tongue. I mean, I get Reiklanders a great engineers, but their locks are the same as anybody else's. I picked my way out, grabbed my stuff, and had a rather harrying motorcycle chase out of the city. I think I had the entire damn city police force after me at that point. I guess they took the escape pretty personally."

"I'm pretty sure you got at least or two guys killed through purges alone." Rock nods.

"But yeah, it's not a place I'd like to go back to again, even if I weren't a wanted person." Alex sighs. "There were... things I saw, but never noticed at the time. But with all this shit I've been seeing coming out of Reikland now, it's started making sense."

"Stuff like?" You ask.

"When I was there, I didn't see any cemeteries, or old or sick people. At first I thought they just had very efficient healthcare, but with all the undead and the brains.... I'm starting to think otherwise."

"Yeah, it's starting to make sense." You say darkly.

"Reikland.... such an odd place." Rock sighs.

"Yeah, even though I've been in that country myself... I just know so little about it. It doesn't help that unlike a lot of places I've gone to, the people there just aren't very talkative. Pretty scary, if you ask me." Alex sighs.

"Well, like I said, we only got personal experience to go off on." Rock shrugs. "If you want to know more, Parker's the one to talk to. Now if you excuse me, I still gotta catch up on my sleep, which I probably won't be getting thanks to that revelation."

Rock then stretches and yawns. Alex similarly leans back and yawns softly.

"Actually, I want to talk to Parker first." You say. "She's the one who knows the most about this situation, after all."

"I suppose." Tarin nods.

Parker and Bannon are a little further up the aisle, pretty much at the front of the car. You see Parker sitting in her seat, calmly reading a file, a pair of reading glasses resting over her nose. Bannon meanwhile is sprawled across the two seats in the aisle across, snoring loudly with a blanket put over him to cover him as best as possible, no doubt loud down by Parker herself.

"Oh, Roy, Tarin, I didn't expect to see you two still awake." Parker smiles when she sees you two approach. "It's going to be an overnight ride, after all."

"Yeah, well, there was just some stuff we wanted to know, first." You say.

"Oh, well then ask away!" Parker smiles and checks her watch. "Better make it quick, though. I want to try and get some rest as well. Big day when we arrive, after all!"

"Hey Parker, what do you know about Breton?" You ask. "It would be nice to know the lay of the land before we get there."

"Ahhh, well. Like I said before, it's largely a feudal nation which surprisingly enough managed to survive to modern times. You'd think having rigid caste systems and an absolute monarchy wouldn't be conducive to forming a industrialized nation, but well, there they are."

"And what exactly is their beef with Reikland?"

"Oh, that's a complicated one." Parker nods, taking her glasses off. "You see, Reikland and Breton used to be unified as a single country. This was AGES ago, but eventually differences formed. Reikland started instituting sweeping social and economic reforms to rapidly industrialize. However, the people in Breton didn't like the idea of abandoning their traditions so easily... and suffice to say they came to blows over it. After a brief but brutal civil war, Breton broke off from Reikland, and they've been separate countries ever since."

"And the opposing factions?"

"Well, there's an anti-Reikland faction that opposes associating with Reikland in any way. These are mostly the noble families that suffered the worst in the civil war. The pro-Reikland families still have connections to Reikland, and would like to see the two countries reunified."

"Wow, I never knew any of this." You whistle.

"That's not unintentional. Both nations are relatively isolationist and Reikland obviously has been suppressing that knowledge since it makes them look bad." Parker explains. "So, the situation there isn't as cut and dry as you might think."

"Can you tell us more about the Artois and Sylvan families?" You ask.

"Ah, well, a lot of it is very straight forward." Parker chuckles. "The Artois family is one of the most nationalistic and staunchly loyal families to the crown. In the olden times, their family suffered greatly at the hands of Reikland. A number of their knights and retainers, and even a few members of the main family, were executed by Reikland, which is partly what kicked off the civil war."

"Solving a problem with force sounds exactly like how Reikland handles things." Tarin sighs.

"Either way, we can find an ally in Artois. He's a genuine hawk. If the intel is true, he'd find any excuse to start an Errantry War with Reikland."

"An Errantry War? What's that?" You ask.

"Ah, well, traditionally, Breton doesn't go to war as a united entity." Parker says. "Usually, you'll have individual lords, or alliances of a handful of lords venturing to prosecute some kind of conflict, but it's usually small scale. An Errantry War can only be called by the King, and by tradition all lords must unite under his banner to fight. In return, the King is expected to seize lands and resources to distribute to the lords, which is what provides them incentive to go fight."

"So the endgame here is to have Breton go on an Errantry War against Reikland."

"That's right. At the very least, they'll open up a second front Reikland will have to worry about." Parker nods. "We have a good chance since the Artois family is currently married into the King's family. Blood connections are the closest you can make in Breton society."

"Sounds easy enough, then." Tarin notes.

"I wish." Parker sighs. "The Sylvans are no slouches, either. Thanks to lots of lucrative trade agreements with Reikland, his family is the richest in Breton. Though buying off people is largely frowned upon, money still has a voice in Breton. If we let him go unchecked, they can convince Breton to stay neutral. Worse, the might even have them join in on Reikland's side, and WE'LL end up having to defend two fronts."

"On that note, do you know anything about the Reikland delegation?" You're honestly curious.

"Ah yes, I'm somewhat familiar." Parker nods. "Just like how there are Bretons with connections to Reikland, there are Reiklanders with connections to Breton. Reikland sent one of these individuals, whom they call the Iron Wolf, one of the commanders of the Reiksguard, Reikland's most elite military unit."

"Is there anything else you know?" Tarin asks.

"Sorry, that's the limits of our intel, or at least what I have access to. Parker says sadly. "All I know is that she's a high ranking commander, and not one to be trifled with. Anyways, that's all the time I have."

With that, Parker gives a loud yawn.

"I'll see you two tomorrow morning." She says before closing her eyes.

You and Tarin return to your original seat, passing by an already sleeping Axel and Alfie, both of them leaning into each other.

"Awwww, so cute." You coo.

"Mhm." Tarin says nonverbally.

You both back down on your seats, and you suddenly let out a yawn. Maybe you WERE that tired.

"If you're tired, you can sleep on me." Tarin says simply, patting her lap. "I won't mind. It's the least I can repay you for last time."

"...Roy, wake up, we're here." You hear Tarin whisper to you.

"Whraaaaaa?" You groan as your eyes crack open. "Are we there already?"

"Yes, the train has arrived." Tarin nods. "We better get moving."

"You haven't been awake this entire time keeping an eye on me, have you?" You ask suspiciously as you get up and stretch your arms.

"Of course not." Tarin shakes her head lightly. "I got some rest."

"Huh, okay." You look around and see the rest of your platoon is disembarking. You quickly follow them out to the unsettlingly empty platform.

"W-where is everybody?" Alfie asks, nervous.

"Perhaps they emptied it for security reasons." Parker hypothesizes.

"Still, I don't like this..." Bannon frowns, his hand slowly reaching for his sidearm. Rock and Alex do the same.

Suddenly, a loud clanking sound echoes throughout the platform. You all turn to see a troop of men in full plate armor taking positions all along the platform, each of them wearing tabards bearing different symbols and crests. And then you see one man dressed in a disgustingly bright orange and purple uniform march up, unrolling a scroll and reading loudly from it without even making eye contact with you.

"Delegates from Tilea, we welcome you to our glorious nation of Breton!" The herald bellows. "As guests of the King, you shall be escorted to the Artois castle where you shall have a personal audience with Lord Artois himself!"

"Very very interesting, so this is our competition, eh?"

You all pause at the introduction of the new voice. It was clipped, precise, and very formal, punctuated by the loud clicking of dress heels walking across the the tiled floor. A platinum haired, eyepatch wearing Reikland girl steps in front of your group and formally bows, her one good eye glinting in the morning light.

"Guten tag, my Tilean comrades!" She smiles brightly.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget PJ Witches on Sunday and Ace Combat on Friday!

well when we punch her out in a knightly fist fight we can take her to be our 3rd crew member when we get a bigger and better VT

I don't know how this works
>>
>>41174063
Not sure if Not-German pride will go down so easily.

Also considering how they use such a feudal system, she might sat something shallow like making Tarin a servant/concubine.

>>41174076
Kicking her ass in Vertical tanks will seduce her.

Can Roy be considered a big strong man?

True, but if Tarin won't defend what's hers then she will lose this battle.

Merc pls mercy

...also, >>41174193 reminded me of something.
Is our love for tanks just limited to a certain aspect of the vehicle? Like, the firepower, the speed, etc, or do we just love VTs in general?
>>
>>41174209
Also this is Feudal Germany so wouldn't they offer their strongest woman to the strongest man to make strong offspring for the sake of Germany?

Her ass being kicked is only a bonus/marriage interview.

Tarin vs German Officer, I want to see this fight
>>
>>41174247
Haha, Breton is a silly place with silly laws. It might be possible!

>>41174237
Roy likes VTs in general. It's the whole package for him.

VT as a whole, since VT-tan is all that embodies his love for them.

>>41174266
I imagine Breton being a hard core VT nerd country who use their love of VT tanks to beat the shit out of each other.

So if it's possible, the biggest VT-nerd who can kick ass, is basically prime husband material.

MASTERCRAFTED VERTICAL TANKS

Breton does have a robust middle class, but they're mostly confined to cities and are far more strictly controlled than what you would find in other nations.

Defeat them via sabotage when they're caught with their pants down.

Armoured Vehicles come in 2 varieties:
>Hard to Break, but Hard to Repair
>Easy to Break, but Easy to Repair

The 1st is typically the category that belongs to Super complicated bits of warmachines like your Tigers, King Tigers, and Panthers. Whereas the 2nd is represented your Shermans, T-34s, and other easy to fix tanks.
>>
>>41174473
>>41176581

Well, if they're all unique, then logistics for them is going to be absolute hell.
