Welcome to VR-BBEG Quest, the quest with a large number of capital letters! Last thread, John Smith, retired old man of THE FUTURE, was recruited by a VR games company to pretend to be the main villain NPC of their latest game. This thread, we might actually get to do something!

Character sheet: http://pastebin.com/b2t8hgJ1
Last thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/41134158/

____

Full immersion into Conquest of Hildamere (still a stupid name) is what's needed, which means you don't get a VR headset, or even the full helmet/gloves/boots combat that can cost a small fortune. You get the stasis-chamber, which probably costs several times your new salary by itself – and you're going to be spending the next ten hours in it, at least.

“Don't worry about the, ah, hygiene stuff!” Trust-Me-I'm-a-Doctor-Honest Russell grins excitedly, patting the chamber like a puppy rather than the gunk-filled, metal-and-plastic coffin that it is. Mind you, you've never seen a coffin with so many wires coming out of it, and you'll have Russell (and two technicians) keeping an eye on all that feedback. “When you come out, you'll be in nearly exactly the same state you went it!”

[1/2]
>>
>>41177225
You presume that to mean that the stasis will slow your bodily functions down, rather than that you stand a slight chance of emerging with extra eyes in all the wrong holes, and work on easing yourself into the chamber, wincing at the sensation of the sludge-like material against your skin.

Nothing should ooze like that. And how is anything that damn cold meant to help your aches, huh?

“Mind telling me what I should even expect?” you say pointedly, distracting Russell from... whatever he's doing with that tablet. Probably updating his Friend-feed – 'putting old man in2 slime coffin lmao!!!', you expect. “Just run around killing things?”

As it turns out, that'd a distinct possibility. Apparently you have a load of 'stat points' to share out to make yourself more powerful, but you can do that once you've figured out a 'play-style', if you like (apparently. Sometimes that kid just speaks gibberish). Apart from that, you can just train up various skills and get used to moving and even fighting without the various pains and restrictions your real body gives you.

Hell, with your salary, maybe you'll get some 3D-printed hips and move better outside the game, as well.

With your body fully ensconced in – let's admit it, it's a giant tub of goo – you close your eyes, surroundings warming up slightly as-

And there you are. Looking just like the real world (or maybe a little brighter), you're standing upright in n office whose opulence is only matched by the clothes you're suddenly wearing. Rich reds, purples and golds decorate the room, not so much complementing the heavy, carved furniture as thrusting the sheer ostentatiousness into your face and then jamming it down your throat.

At least the massive window's view onto some kind of tiled courtyard is decent enough.

It should be simple enough to have a look at all these gaming thingamies and call Russell at the same time. With a clumsy mental push, you activate the main menu – the controls are somewhat similar to activating your iMPLANT's apps – and start flicking through various settings and sub-menus, simultaneously pinging your handler for a response.

It barely takes him a second to get back to you.

“Hey! You're okay? I mean, not that we thought you wouldn't be okay, I just-”

“Figuring the menus out,” you interrupt, coming across the map feature and working out how to zoom on various parts. “I'm in... Vienta?”

“That's the country you're in, yes,” Russell's tinny voice burbles, clearly different than the various noises of birdsong and distant goings-on inside the game. “The central continent is Hildamere, you're in the Lord-Commander's offices at the moment. Everything's working right?”

You tap away at the Inventory screen – currently empty – and eye your stats with trepidation. They seem worryingly low at the moment. “Fine, all fine. What exactly did you want me to do first?”

“That's up to you! The NPCs will be re-set for the game release, so you can act however you want at the moment. Did you have a plan?”

Part of one. You'll

“I'll play the part of the Lord-Commander for now,” you tell him, abandoning the menus for now to wander around the office; part of you carefully observing every detail of the book-lined walls and paperwork-strewn desk, the majority of you simply enjoying the lack of your body's protests. “Might cause a problem later, if I get used to not acting. And I should probably take a look around the castle as well.”

“Getting to know the lay of the land, huh?” Russell sounds pleased. “That's good, as the King's brother, you should know the place well. There's quite a few A.I.'s wandering around, most of them in the castle are pretty smart. If you get in a fight, try to remember the basics of CQC.”

You didn't pick that skill. “What?”

“Uh. Never mind. You should probably grab your rapier.”

You find the rapier – with an impossibly elegant crossbar – by the side of your chair, and equip it easily enough. It certainly completes your ridiculously medieval outfit as you stride down the corridor, part of your attention matching the doors and rooms you see to the map that hovers unobtrusively in your vision.

For the moment, you haven't seen anyone; just stone walls, some kind of glowing lanterns (magic?) and various tapestries of fantastic events.

Better loot drops, some events can change slightly according to various factors that Luck can improve, generally better responses from NPCs, and some hings that will remain secret for now.

If you crit-fail a skill-roll, you might also get a small chance to re-roll, but you'd need high luck for that.

I'm running fairly fast and loose with damage and suchlike, we'll have a test-run of combat before you get into anything serious.

You've spent maybe ten minutes wandering the corridors, occasionally peering through an open doorway, half-listening to Russell's babblings about the architecture design.

And then someone walks round the corner and almost right into you. Apparently the map doesn't show people. Great.

“Lord-Commander!” The young man reels back, almost stumbling, reacting faster than you did – you should probably fix those Stats soon, considering how easily this man moves in heavy robes. “I'm terribly sorry, my Lord – I was lost in thought.” He brushes down those heavy, deep blue robes, a golden sigil hanging from his neck. “My sincerest apologies.”

Jesus. Sounds like he has a plum in his mouth and a stick up his ass. Poor kid, and he barely looks out of his teens. Before you can respond, he suddenly perks up, losing some of the nervousness and asks, “I wonder – perhaps you could assist?”

>Response?

(Confirmed, your wife is deeeeead.)

You arch an eyebrow, putting on what you hope is a high-born accent yourself. “You have me at a disadvantage. Assist in what?”

Mentally, you send a rather more annoyed message to Russell. 'You couldn't warn me he was coming?'

'He wasn't attacking you!' The response is embarrassed, and vaguely guilty. You suspect he may have been getting a little too carried away with his spiel regarding architecture.

“It's quite simple!” The young man captures your attention again, already looking grateful. “I'll be performing my first rites as a full priest of Merrowin in a few days, and I'm not sure what to use as a sacrifice. Perhaps I could borrow some of our men to hunt something appropriate for the Summer festival...?”

>Certainly, I can spare some.

Hunting is fun, especially for nobles. Boar, stag, fox, or a mythical creature will all make great sacrifices
>>
>>41179674
No they won't, the NPCs get reset. Did you read the QMs post?
>>
>>41179674
Everything will be re-set in six weeks, you can do whatever you like now. Torture the King for information, burn down orphanages, whatever.
>>
Putting on an appropriately benevolent smile, you pat your rapier. “A hunt, eh?” Wait. Less Canadian. “And for a worthy cause, too! I can certainly spare some men for that, and perhaps come along myself. I seem to have run short of paperwork.”

Merrowin-priest-brat (who's Merrowin, anyway?) brightens considerably. It's hard to read his body-language under all that cloth, but he certainly seems relieved. “My Lord, I'm incredibly grateful. Without an appropriate sacrifice, the harvest may well-”

Blah, blah, you don't care. 'Russell, who's Merrowin?'

'Nature goddess.' Thanks for that unhelpful reply. 'Oh, wait, I didn't activate – hold on -'

A moment later, there's a tiny ping in your awareness, and the tiny 'Quests' tag in the corner of your perception is glowing faintly. 'There, you can accept quests now! Might help you level up a bit faster.'

Wow. Something useful for once.

Back to the priest – should you know his name? - you reach out your hand in a gentle 'shut the hell up already' motion. “I understand. Let's meet up in, say, an hour, at the castle gates? I'll have some men ready for then.”

He beams. “That would be perfect, my Lord. I'll go and start preparing immediately, by your leave.” A quick bow and he's dashing off, probably to knock someone else flying, leaving you alone.

A brief glance into your Quests log has you accepting the 'Hunt an Appropriate Sacrifice' task, which will net you a variable amount of XP, depending on the beast taken.

I'll repost my message from past thread, since it was at the point where most players left. Could provide some inspiration

I really wish I could find that one D&D story, about a group fighting a recurring antagonist. All he'd do is evade them and keep on sending mooks while ruining their standing and making them out to be the bad guys. I think his goal was to make everyone miserable. Inducing famines and wars everywhere as he went. Very hard to pinpoint what was exactly his doing and what was random occurance, player group was chasing what everyone believed to be a ghost or something that did not exist. I personally think that'd be what we should go for. Just sow chaos and destruction everywhere.

With the help of Russell and the mini-map (mostly the map, to be honest), you find your way to the barracks while updating your stats.

Some of the soldiers based at the castle are on leave – others are at work patrolling or guarding, but of the ones currently here and off-duty, you can find in the roster books, you could select:

>Private Gertrus Valiant – sword
>Private Olian (no surname) - spear
>Private Kit vir Heinlein – short-bow

Sending a runner (handy, these recruits) to fetch the three, it doesn't take long before Privates Olian (level 6), Heinlein (4) and Gertrus (7) are lined up in front of the barracks, straight as a rod and wonderfully terrified of whatever reason they've been called for.

Olian is perhaps seventeen, short, weedy, and covered in so many freckles you were briefly concerned he'd been programmed with some kind of communicable disease.

Heinlein, a girl of the same age, looks rather more well-fed, with a ramrod posture, well-muscled arms from her archery, and a slightly weak chin. You suspect the 'vir' in names might represent some kind of nobility.

The final one, another girl, is Private Valiant, about fifteen, who appears to take perfect care of her longsword and rather less with her hygiene. On the bright side, she... no, there's no real bright side. How does she even carry that sword?

“You all know who I am,” you announce, keeping your bearing as something you would probably describe as 'stern, yet regal'. You hope. “I have selected you to assist with retrieving a suitable sacrifice for the coming festival. We will be seeking out as impressive a beast as we can, so I fully expect
>you to do your best.”
>there to be fatalities.”
>excellent results – or you will have me and the priesthood to answer to.”
>write-in

After changing into your own armour - +15 to Con, +10 to Agi – you lead your minions to the front gates, where the priest (whatever his name is), waits, hands clasped tightly in front of him. He looks completely inappropriately dressed for a wilderness jaunt.

“My Lord! I hope I'm not too early.” He nods pleasantly at your rag-tag group, motioning towards the road – it branches out in several directions, one towards a sprawling city starting perhaps thirty minutes walk away; he points to another section reaching towards a forest, perhaps an hour's walk. “The forest is full of animals that Merrowin may approve of. Shall we begin?”

> Summon 5 normal horses – 5DC, roll 51 = 5 incredibly average horses. How boring.

And there were horses. And it was good. Even the one that startled priest-boy into falling over, and then started trying to eat his robes.

“Everyone grab a horse,” you order, as if you're experienced at riding bareback. Not like that. “We'll get there faster that way.”

Private Olian, eyes wide, raises his hand as if he's at school. “Sir, I don't know how to-”

“Does anyone know anything?” you interupt. “Aren't we all just awash in our own ignorance, at the base of things?”

Valiant frowns. “Well-”

“Shut up and get on the horses.”

They do, after much falling off. The horses seem unimpressed, although whatever-his-name-is keeps giving you impressed looks.

> Gain Bareback Riding Lv. 9 (700/1000 to lv 10)

With minimal difficulties you manage to navigate the small herd, plus riders, to the edge of the forest, where the priest - clinging tightly to his poor horse's mane - calls you all to a halt.

“We should dismount here and move through on foot,” he explains, looking a little queasy. “The trees are too close to ride through at any speed, and the horses certainly won't be stealthy.”

The guards look at you, barely disguising their hope. Apparently horse-riding isn't for everyone, although you found it quite invigorating.

“Very well, but let's not bother with stealth.” You manage to remove yourself from your bored-looking horse with a minimum of embarrassment. “If we make some noise as we go, we should be able to attract something strong enough to be worth the hunt.”

You release the Summon, horses vanishing (Heinlein hadn't finished dismounting – well, the bruises will speed her up next time, the layabout), and start casting Barriers on people, as surreptitiously as possible – a little Illusion to make sure no-one notices is simple enough to add, Russell making appreciative sounds.

>MP now 982/1000

“The outskirts of the forest are reasonably safe,” the priest explains as you enter. “We'll have to go deeper if you're sure you want something more dangerous, my Lord. A... bear perhaps?”

You consider it. “Is there nothing stronger here?”

Strangely, that makes everyone look a little more worried. You notice the kids clutching their weapons tighter as they move in a formation around you, keeping you and the priest on the inside. Ha.

“Well – there's tales of monsters,” he says slowly, not sounding enthused. “Giant, man-eating beasts, trolls, and – and worse.”

You lean closer, intrigued in spirit of yourself. “Worse?”

The priest glances around nervously, leans even closer towards you, clutching his sigil, and whispers, “They say that sometimes, passing through, one of the Fair Folk may hunt you down.”

… Faeries? Seriously?

Hm. You should probably find out what this guy's actually capable of. Frowning as if considering options, you ask, 'Russell, what's the priest's level, anyway?'

A brief pause. 'You can't-? Oh. Uh, you need to turn the Name/Level view on in Options.'

He couldn't have told you that before? Maybe when you asked about the kids'? Great. A few seconds later, names and levels appear above your group's heads, showing that Acolyte Nero is level 12. Russell also comments that he's got some decent Healing magic, apparently trying to make up for annoying you.

“Let's search out the strongest monster we can find,” you announce as you little group trudges towards almost certain death (them) and a refreshing woodland walk (you). “There's no point if we don't risk our all.” By which you mean, risk the disposable NPCs.

'You're getting good at this villain thing, John!' Russell compliments.

>Encounter roll 57 – scream-worthy, not crap-your-pants-worthy

Your lackeys manage to actually make fairly short work of a few beasts that attack you along the way, a wolf and several boar – your Illusions gently messing with the animal's sight certainly help – and Kit and Olian even 'level up', as Russell puts it.

Your group carefully avoids most of the small fry, heading in the parts of the forest where the birdsong stops and the light is blotted out by the trees, casting thick swathes of darkness over the ground below. The others nearly (or do) trip several times, their lower stats clearly working against them.

You all see it at the same time; it's not hard to miss. Standing, it would be perhaps twelve times your size, at the moment it's seated, covered in things that might be vines or tentacles or even both. Despite the distance, the name and level are clear; Young Greenspawn, Level 89.

Hm.

There's a long pause, as everyone meditates on your wisdom. 'That should work,' Russell volunteers cheerily.

Nero seems uncertain. “And... then?”

“And THEN we stab it.”

Olian and Heinlein's heads slowly turn, giving each other wary looks. Nero coughs. “We should... set it on fire how, precisely? Unless you're trained in Fire magic, my Lord...?”

“I'm sure the guards are trained in survival and can light a fire,” you explain. “Then we'll simply introduce it to said fire, somehow. Heinlein, how are you at shooting flaming arrows?”

“I – I've never tried that, sir.”

Excellent. “A zero-percent failure rate then,” you announce breezily, confident in the knowledge that none of this will matter in six weeks anyway. “Or maybe a fire elemental.”

Nero's eyes widen in something approaching awe. “You can Summon elementals, too?”

“Yes.” Better explain that one. “They're very similar to horses, where it counts.” With Nero distracted as he tries to work that one out, you

Technically, yes. There's an extremely small chance that, being sapient and incredibly powerful, it might successfully roll to resist.

Tactical retreat and see if we can't get the forest reset when we're done.

Also, shouldn't we have summoned a roughly equal level one to it at most?

Oh, I think that it means that it's strong.
Let's contract it instead, or something in lieu of that. Promise lots of fire and mayhem and destruction, all the good stuff that fire elementals love.

You've got this. These brats should just stand back and watch you work.

Striding forwards as impressively as you can when trying not to set yourself on fire – you also notice the flames have just reached the Greenspawn – you approach the fire god's servant, which gazes blankly down at you.

“Hear me, Herald of Drigir!” you call, ignoring Russell's requests for you to hold on, his popcorn's nearly done. “I am Lord-Commander of Vienta's armies, your Summoner. Perhaps it would be in your interests to make a contract with me?”

The fire-thing leans closer, and even at such a distance, the heat singes your face. YOU DARE SUMMON ONE SUCH AS I FOR SO LITTLE REASON?

“... Yes?”

VERY WELL. STILL, TO MAKE A CONTRACT WITH ONE AS GREAT AS I, YOU MUST PROVE YOUR WORTH.

You notice the Greenspawn stumbling around as it burns, flailing and beating at its body, health bar steadily decreasing. At least the Herald seems to be making an effort to keep its fire away from you, for your moment. “How so, Herald?”

For a moment, the massive thing pauses, as if considering. Then, SLAUGHTER A WATER DRAGON, AND BURN ITS HEART, AND YOU WILL HAVE MY SERVICE.

That sounds like exceptionally hard work to recruit one Herald.

>Negotiate (how?)
>ok sounds good
>Actually I have to go wash my goldfish.

You can vote/discuss now, I'll be tootling around setting up a new thread.

______________
“Is there any sort of time limit on this?” It's an important question. If more people paid attention to how long they had to return a library book, the world would be a happier place. “And could I raise it afterwards as my servant?”

NO TIME LIMIT, BUT IT MUST NOT BE RAISED, the Herald intones, flames lashing harder at the last part. ALL BEINGS OF WATER MUST PERISH AND STAY THAT WAY FOREVERMORE.

You decide not to mention the proportion of water in the human body. “Okay, looks like a deal. I'll just find a water dragon to kill, then.”

YOU CAN USUALLY FIND THEM NEAR WATER.

“Thanks.”

YOU'RE WELCOME.

“And thank you for not burning me to death.”

IT'S OFTEN THE SMOKE THAT KILLS. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY LEAVE, MORTAL.

With a quick nod and a wave, you turn and do so. You definitely aren't running away, but you may be moving a little faster than casual as you manage to pick a path out through the roaring flames and toppling, burning trees.

As you head off in the direction of your men, the dying bellow of the Greenspawn finally fades away, leaving only a small message in your vision -
-calculating...
-please wait...
-Multiple monsters/animals killed! XP gained! Gained (8) levels! 24 stat points to spend!
Well, that turned out okay, you think, as you step out of the tumbling, dying, wreckage that probably supported the country's forestry industry, holding a hand up in greeting to your compatriots. The start up at the orange-lit, smog-filled sky, aghast.
