Hey /tg/, /x/ poster here. Going innawoods soon with some friends, really remote area, native american stomping grounds.

Now the reason I'm coming to /tg/ is because on /x/ we know how to run around and greenpost when skinwalkers & wendigos find us, but I figured you guys would know how to DEFEAT them, seeing as they're cryptids/borderline mythical.

There is evidence that conventional weapons fall short on most forest horrors, so what kind of wizard shit needs to be done? I want to be able to fight back when it comes down to it.

I figure cold iron can't hurt. Maybe they're vulnerable to it, lots of wildsy/woodsy things are. And if they aren't you still have a hunk of metal to smack them with.
>>
>>41216832
Buckshot made of silver, cold iron, and splintered rosewood. Add some garlic and holy water for good measure. Fucks up anything.
>>
>>41216783
>There is evidence that conventional weapons fall short on most forest horrors

Most forest horrors are vulnerable to Cold Iron, which is just your general catch-all term for regular iron.

Vulnerability to cold iron just means "stab them with a pointy metal object until they go away."

Other then that, the general catch-alls for magical creatures should work on Forest beasties; never invite one into your camp, always be wary but respectful when meeting a stranger on the road, never *ever* mention their bestial qualities if said stranger presents them, have a crucifix on hand, and carry a pocket full of rice for quick getaway (most beings are compelled to stoop and count them.)
>>
Will be monitoring this thread
>>
>>41216832
>Silver bullets or anything?

Silver is for unholy abominations. Most forest beasties are not unholy, they're forces of primeval nature.

As stated >>41216843 and >>41216850, cold iron is just your standard steel or iron blade, and their vulnerability amounts to "you can stab them and they'll feel it."
>>
>>41216850
>always be wary but respectful when meeting a stranger on the road

This seems like the big one to me. Half the time I read about this shit it's because they pissed them off unknowingly or acted like a jerk.
Actually, if a stranger just tells you to leave or to go away you should just fucking do so immediately.
>>
>>41216783

Fire seems to be a common theme for destroying supernaturally resilient things, though it's not that easy to apply in a fight (especially without risking yourself)

Do some research on the specific area you're going to. Are there specific spirits there with particular wants or needs? Particular ghosts you'll need to be aware of? The last thing you need is to mistake the local beastie for a more general one and try something that it doesn't care about.

Also, consider all the other options that getting into a fight *first*. Can you bribe the thing? Can you get a defense that'll block posession?
>>
Guys, guys, Wendigos aren't forest creatures, they are fundamentally hunger spirits and the like having taken a physical form, typically through possession.

And skinwalkers don't have a particular weakness, since they are just shapeshifters.

A gun works on skinwalkers, but Wendigos are way more tricky.

>>
>>41216783
For a skinwalker? Depends on the scale; some are held to be just shapeshifting wizards (try a gun) while others are thought to be demon monsters from before man.

For those, find a native american shaman, or a nuclear weapon. There's not been rigorous testing on the efficacy of other means to fight supernatural horrorterrors, but those should work.

As you are probably not a badass demonslayer or special forces operative though, don't get into a fight in the first place remains the safest course of action.
>>
>>41216877

Pretty much every time you read about a Fae it's them telling you to get the fuck out of their forest, and the human in that story saying "no."

If a stranger is telling you the forest is not a good place to stay, listen to them.

It's also absolutely pivotal you remain courteous around them, the Fae love this. An important thing to do is never mention, or even act like you notice, anything that give them off as Fae; Hulder in Scandinavian folklore can be very kind, loving creatures... As long as you recognize they're Hulder, and don't point it out to them.
>>

The Wendigo is a Native American creature born from cannibals feasting on the flesh of their kin during hard winters or periods of extended famine. As most of the Native Americans are gone, and the days of cannibalism are long gone, any wendigo you will encounter are either turned-Westerners or ancient beings, so they'll know a few tricks up their sleeve.

The wendigo is not vulnerable to a great many things, cold iron does not harm them like it does the fae, and they're not known to entertain conversation. The two things that can reliably harm are wendigo is fire and silver.

Keep the fire going at night, and always have some silver nearby. For a double-whammy against Fae, Demons and Wendigos, make the silver into a crucifix.

Guide:
>Skinwalkers
Stay together, if you know any locals in the area, ask if they know of any powerful shamans. There is a good chance this person is the skinwalker.

>Katshituashku
Avoid the fuck out of the stiff legged bear. You aren't going to defeat it, but perhaps you can avoid it.

>Teihiihan
Don't try to fight back, you will only die before they take you back to their lair.

>Double Face Woman
It wont be too dangerous for a grown person, they prefer to feed on children for this reason. If you have a weapon on you, you should be safe. (Unless you look in its eyes, in which case you are done for.)

>Kanontsistonties
A hearthstone is a stone used as a part of a fireplace. Simply shoving it in the mouth of the creature shouldn't be too hard.

>Mishibizhiw
Mishibizhiw generally stay at the same place forever, so if you've visited a waterplace oftenly, it is probably safe.
>>
>>41217005
>A hearthstone is a stone used as a part of a fireplace.

Hue.
>>
>>41217005

A stone from your hearth, back in the day you put stones in your fireplace so you have hot rocks that stayed hot long after the fire itself went out. These were useful for putting in your bed or carrying on your person for quick heat.

If you have a fireplace, find a nice stone and put it in there. Start a fire, take care of the fire until it goes out, then retrieve the stone.

Congratulations, you now have a hearthstone.

>>
>>41217131
>Haven't people had sexual encounters with fae (allegedly)?

People have been fucking Fae since forever, they're pretty much the original race of waifus.

The general idea is that you should remain polite, courteous yet wary about people you meet on the roads, even if they're women. If you keep your cool, they might give you advice. Being the randy dogs we are, this eventually developed into "be nice and they'll fuck you maybe."

But yes, the sex is incredible and pretty comprehensive, although you need to realize some Fae use this as an opportunity to whisk you away, or get impregnated by you to make Changelings.

It also depends on the Fae, someone mentioned Hulder. Hulder are very beautiful Scandinavians (Huldra is the female version) who will try to kidnap the FUCK out of you with charm magic, however the way to stop this is realizing they're Huldra (look for a hollow back or cow tail.) If you notice the tail, remain friendly, and keep in touch, you might even get a wife (same applies to Kitsune.)

Nymphs and Dryads are a whole other can of worms that would require their own posts.

>But I don't want to fuck one, I just heard some fucked up freaky stories about people who have and weird or horrifying shit has ensued.

The sex itself isn't freaky, in fact the sex is probably the best sex you will ever have.

It's the afterglow you need to be careful about. If you're a poor lover they might just dump you in the forest or turn you into an animal. If they like you too much they'll steal you away to the First World or a cave where time flows all freaky.

Before having sex with any Fae, it's important to know they're Fae, know their tricks, and keep them satisfied.
>>
>>41217223

Huldra, Selkies or Kitsune. Huldra are strong Scandinavian chicks, Selkies have the whole "beautiful Celtic" girl thing going, while Kitsune are straight up designed to be the ideal wife.
>>
>>41217332
And all three are going to kill you at one point or another.
>>
>>41217329
>Isn't steel no good since it's not pure iron?

If anything, steel should be even more effective.

Iron works because blood smells and tastes like iron, which made people associate iron with being the "life-blood" of the Earth. As Fae are part of the Earth, it takes something *from* the Earth to hurt them, and shaped life-blood tends to do the trick damn well.

Steel is largely an alloy of iron and carbon. If iron is the world's life-blood, carbon could be considered the world's bones.

Kumiho are going to eventually kill you.

Kitsune are a mixed bag since most of them are good-natured, albeit tricksters to the core. They're more likely to run away than kill you, which is in fact where they got their name.

Huldra are only going to kill you if you stop appreciating how you got a 10/10 supernatural Nordic waifu, and even then they'll give plenty of warning.

Selkies I'm not too sure about, never read enough about them.
>>
>>41217367
My understanding was that iron is associated with the real, material world and is as such anathema to the ethereal fae.
>>

Steel shouldn't be any less effective because it has other minerals in it.
>>
>>41217438

Others are vague such as "blessed water".

A horseshoe will never hurt.

Looking up stuff about cold iron and steel seems to suggest steel works, as cold iron generally means any worked iron, especially when made into cutting/slashing implements.

Again, the implications are pretty direct here: If faced with a fairy, take out your knife and stab it until it goes away.

>>
I've hear white ash works againt them, so if you're starting a fire, pick up some of the ashes when it's done. Also, don't go anywhere alone. The standard trick the skinwalkers and other shapeshifters like to pull is wait untill you're alone, then kill or capture you and take your place. They aren't usually described as attacking people who aren't alone.

Cold iron (which really means any forged iron) works on most mythological beasties, so that's a good bet.

>>41217329
I'd assume it works. See, the thing isn't that iron is inherently anti-supernatural or anything. It has symbolic value because it represents man's power over nature: We can take lumps of rock with iron ore, and refine it into iron and shape that iron into a weapon. Therefore it's effective againt primal creatures of the wilderness. Infact, based on that logic, anything man-made, the more artificial the better, should work. Plastic, food that's 90% artificial sweeteners and preservatives...

>If a selkie finds the skin that you stole from her, she'll turn into a seal and run away.

>If a man steals a female selkie's skin she is in his power and is forced to become his wife. Female selkies are said to make excellent wives, but because their true home is the sea, they will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean. If she finds her skin she will immediately return to her true home, and sometimes to her selkie husband, in the sea. Sometimes, a selkie maiden is taken as a wife by a human man and she has several children by him. In these stories, it is one of her children who discovers her sealskin (often unwitting of its significance) and she soon returns to the sea. The selkie woman usually avoids seeing her human husband again but is sometimes shown visiting her children and playing with them in the waves.

For some reason this is really sweet to me.

Assuming the manipulation and perversion of the so-called natural order is physically or spiritually harmful, most "modern" foodstuffs would be practically radioactive. At least in the US.

Everyone in this thread is either a creep or a freak for talking so eagerly about implementing pain and death upon the Fair Folk. The Fae are friends, not foes, and the sooner you realize this the sooner you could have a shot at some adorable mythological maidens.

I only read the first half of the thread but here you go:
>Cross hilted daggers/swords can double as crucifix. Also a separate protective symbol in other folklores.

>Fey will likely try some form of suggestion/mind control. If you'd prefer to be safe at all cost and are not exited about becoming a friend of the fey, get iron cufflinks/buttons. You don't always get to draw your iron whatever and the fey like to dance or do other physical contact stuff.

>Salt works for both making them count it and sanctify stuff and even making a barrier/circle. Vulnerable to being drecnhed though so carry seeds or peebles as well.

>For non-hostiles that still like to play tricks on you (like, making you skip 5 years while you dance tricks). You should know some riddles to occupy them until the sun rises. They can be hard but certainly not unfair or you'll incur their wrath. Also know several of them in case the figure it out.

>Also get glass in case of fext.

My kit would include:
glass peebles
no iron cufflinks/buttons because I like most feys from my local folklore

You need three things: a blade sufficient for cutting through the rib cage (to enable removing the heart), matches, and whatever you think it will take to get the thing to the point where you can do the first thing. Regular old steel swords work pretty well on either, although a silver nitrate solution poured onto the blade will help. So does a mixed load of silver and steel buckshot from a few yards out. You can just alternate if you can find pre-loaded silver buckshot.

You can also avoid the entire mess to begin with by completing a ritual of obeisance at an altar inside the woods you're going to be in. You can make the altar if there isn't already one there. The ritual requires a sacrifice of sustenance and of blood (a squirrel works, usually), as well as an oath to not violate the area. Like by leaving your trash behind.

Happy camping.

Mortal bread, fruits and beer/wine (try to have something not too tainted by the food industry, ie amke it yourself). Good for keeping a full stomach befor entering undertown and having less of a harsh time trying their foods. Also good for offering if you want to be friend.

Fae, like most reasonable ("reasonable" as in "won't cut you down on sight") enchanting creatures of the wood, care little for the products of humanity, only when it entertains them. We have nothing to offer the Fae that they can't consider or produce if they so desire. What they have, and what they serve, is far beyond our ability to grasp or appreciate.

What little is known about creatures of the forest, like most who study such cryptids will tell you, is really only what they care to let us find out. Even those of us who would dedicate our lives to studying them may not really discover anything new, and if they do, it is unlikely the Fae mistakenly/accidentally let it be discovered about them.

Like someone said, you're just going to be made a curious plaything for lacking such humility as telling a Fae that pizza is better than guarding its forest.
>>
>>41218754
Depends on the fae really, korrigans would probably kindly accept human booze. Probably the same for other things you can offer but they're likely to be old and not like change too much. Don't feed them pizza but a nice pie.

I believe is fae exist, all folklores are true and the fae are jst different by area. If that's so, some fae are not guardian of the forest to the core and such, though they share certain ideals.

Wendigos are the spirit of those that resort to cannibalism to avoid starvation. Do you think you can kill starvation with bullets or arrows? You can't. The Wendigo eats human flesh but it's still a human in some level, so it doesn't sate him. It just keeps doing it out of a cursed addiction, but this is a recurrence of the Wendigo's sin. If you want to defeat a Wendigo, you have to offer him meat. Preferably from a local animal and raw. Wrap a nice piece of blood venison in leather and just put it in front of the creature. Stand your ground.

Also, unclean Native American spirits fear the smoke caused by burning sage. Sage is believed to be a plant associated with sacred rites and healing. It's smoke has purifying properties and the Wendigo is a sin, or sickness, made form. So if the offering of meat fails, have a bowl of crushed dry sage leaves ready to be burned and use a fan of sage leaves to blow the smoke towards the Wendigo. He should back off immediately.

Last but not least, arrowheads made with the antlers of a buck. The horn of a buck is one of the most powerful materials on Native American Mythology.

Happy huntings and welcome to the club.

>The shit our ancestors had to deal with wresting control of the primeval forests of the planet's land masses from regular old nature?
If we really would want to consider this issue seriously, then the problem is in you thinking that your ancestors took those ideas literally in the first place.
The problem with modern people ACTUALLY believing in things like natural spirits is that you people don't really understand the kind of language or mindset these people thought in.

Monsters are a very real category, there is no doubt about that. But that does not mean vendigo's are a real threat actually lurking in forests.

Pound a few nails into trees in a loose ring around the camp. Especially be sure to hit anywhere two trees lean together to form an archway.

Of course, this is one of those situations where "be polite" and "be safe" are at odds. But honestly, anything this works on, FUCK polite.

More often than not, it's the theft part. Usually, if you're being offered the food, it's safe to eat. This is because in the majority of mythologies around the world, spirits tend to have rules to follow, so by willingly offering food they are effectively making sure you don't fuck up. Taking food that wasn't meant for you is a serious offense in most cases.

If it's a non-spirit, then it comes down to a matter of customs and respect. Fae may be trying to trick you, or warp your very being, but at the same time you must be careful as Fae have very strict rules as well. If you know the rules, you can keep yourself safe and even use them against the Fae. Think of the Blind Man from Pan's Labyrinth. Pan specified ahead of time that he has but one rule. Do not eat his food. If you can avoid that, you're golden. If you cannot, he will rend you limb from limb, eat your delicious white meat, and fashion your scalp into a tea cozy.

But these are just generalizations. Unfortunately, the world of mythology and fantasy is full of creatures many and varied, and not all of them follow the same rules. Some may give no fucks, others may be intentionally trying to harm you in such a case, and some may wish to aid you. Knowing is half the battle when it comes to magical creatures, and when that doesn't work that's when you draw your sword.

It's a mixed bag, really.

You get some boys who are in it for the outdoorsmanship and camaraderie. You get others who are in it for the skills. Others are in it because it means a lot to their family. All of these guys tend to be pretty chill.

Then you have the kids who are in it because their parents hope it helps sort them out/calm them down. The ones who agreed because they knew scouts get to play with Fire and Knives. Those guys can be fucked up.

In general, it's a fine organization, with a lot of people in it to do good and have fun as a community, but there will always be bad eggs for various reasons.

I know quite a few Eagle Scouts, coming from a Scouting family, and they vary in demeanor as much as anyone else. My brothers and I are trustworthy friends and dedicated volunteer workers, but we're also sarcastic assholes. Another one I know is a comp sci guy, who I've never heard say a cruel thing about anyone. Another served time in Leavenworth Military Prison for stealing from a Naval Shipyard.

I'm reminded, somewhat, of the words of Olivander in the first Harry Potter. "He did great things. Terrible things, but great ones nonetheless." The big thing is it teaches you confidence, teamwork, and enough skills to appear competent. That's a recipe for people to lead others. Whether for good or ill...

It wouldn't be terribly wrong to think of it a little like The Night's Watch from GoT. Some of the dudes are total asshats, here because they have to be. Some are here for the stories they heard, and some are here because it's what their family expects. But they're a group, and they do useful things, so they push on.

i've always heard the argument that silver bullets would fly with poor accuracy and rage, because of being too heavy and soft compared to other bullet-materials. what does anyone think of a very thin layer of silver over the normal bullet (careful not to get it on the joint between bullet and shell-casing of course), like a silver jacket? or silver tips, or possibly grooves cut shallowly in the bullet and filled with silver?
I don't mean effectiveness against monsters or whatnot, just asking whether such a thing might fly better than an all-silver round.

It's only paranoia if you're wrong.

i always interpret 'cold iron' to mean something that's pure, un-tempered iron - that is to say, no steel or other alloys.
>>
>>41222582
nice ROMAN
>>
>>41222648
Modern interpretations take it to mean basically anything iron, from lumps of ore to steel-jacketed bullets.
>>
>>41222648
It actually means forged iron. Think of cold in this instance as distant or un"emotional". A doctors lab is high tech but it could be considered a "cold" and removed place

An iron knife is very distant from the natural ore that once comprised it
>>
>>41222648
Tempering doesn't add anything to the iron, I don't think. it's just cooling/heating at certain rates and temperatures.
I dunno, been a while since I learned all this shit.
>>
>>41222632
silver is lighter and harder than lead, so it must be the opposite. I don't know why it being soft is good, but less mass would reduce the damage and increase the air resistance.
>>
>>41222632
The weaknesses to materials generally have a burning/repulsive effect.
Also the anatomy of theses things would be different so you wouldn't know where is the heart.
Better to pack buckshot to make it cower and a dagger to pierce the heart/behead afterwards.

Also remember the fair folks and fay beasts leave to world to mortals when the sun shines (unless you went balls deep into a magical forest) so you don't have to kill the menace, just keep it at bay until dawn.
>>
>>41222691
yeah, but i don't like that idea. you could even take 'cold' to mean it was never melted/heated/worked in the way more complex metals, though I'm sure that's not why it was originally called that.
>>
>>41222706
People say silver bullets are unreliable and inaccurate, and that's right. But silver ballbearings would make great buckshot. You don't want a pistol loaded with silver bullets. You want a silver shotgun

>>41222693
that makes sense. i always wondered what the 'cold' part meant.
watch we find later that you actually have to super-chill the metal for it to work on beasties.
>>
>>41222741
No, that's part of the steelmaking process. High-carbon steel is brittle but holds an edge better. Low-carbon steel is more malleable but dulls easily. Medieval European sword makers used separate pieces of steel - low-carbon for the core of the blade, high-carbon for the edges.
>>
>>41222741
I don't believe so, since tempering high carbon and low carbon iron/steel are done differently.
I think.
Again, it's been ages since I learned all this.
>>
>>41222722
egyptians did have trinkets made of meteoritic iron worked at cold temperatures because they didn't have wood to fuel funaces hot enough for iron
that being said, where I'm from the fair folk are said to be hurt by any iron. I believe rpg introduced cold iron because packing regular iron would be a very easy way to get an advantage on a lot of ennemies at a very low cost.

I forget the name of it, but there is a powder material that smiths would use on the iron to add carbon and other stuff to the metal. The real reason so many monsters have been proven to be "not real" is that our ancestors wiped them out, possibly by accident. We're in the middle of a dinosaur-killer tier mass extinction, and humans are the prime cause.

>powerful shamans. There is a good chance this person is the skinwalker.
Well we're dealing with two different definitions at that point. American Indian shamans that shift their shape have been called Skinwalkers, but the kind that terrorize campers and lack the ability to pass as human due to lack of social skills are shapeshifting spirits. At that point, you want the powerful Shaman to help you fight.
>>
>>41222968
It's literally the opposite of that, weirdly.
The name doesn't make much sense. I always thought it was 'cold' because it's been forged into something and then given time to cool down.

Wendigos are typically told to be extremely dangerous creatures; most tales have them with some combination of murderous, shape-shifting, cannibalistic, supernatural beasts. But, they also can typically be dealt with, if you're careful.

Most of it seems to be about your situational awareness, first and foremost: Sometimes they're seen from a distance first, appearing to be a scraggly human, and will eventually try to infiltrate the group. In this case, be alert for a incredibly strong rotting stench, stay together at all times, and count heads.

Some stories have wendigos being aggressive after someone strays into their turf. Watch for signs of bad shit, like bones, and the stench again.

They're told to be strong, and perhaps even supernaturally 'suggestive' towards people; it seems to be a theme that people don't think as clearly around them, or be as alert.

The most common theme seems to be that traditional damage DOES hurt them, and CAN kill them, but it seems to do a lot less damage than expected, so I wouldn't assume a gunshot has killed it until I'd seen its brains on the ground for myself. Fire is absolutely your go-to, if it's safe to do so. Fire usually works for pretty much any supernatural mojo, is my impression.

tl;dr Be alert, stay with each other always, watch for weird people, pay attention for a horrible rotting smell, and if you have to kill it, either shoot/bludgeon/whatever it until you're standing over its mangled, ruined smear of a body on the ground, or light it on fire

I've spent a lot of time reading and thinking about this stuff :(
>>
/k/ is a better choice. They know how to kill all sorts of things.
But skinwalkers are more afraid of you than you are them. I wouldn't worry about it
>>
>>41223519
Oh, I forgot: Despite what others have said in the thread, Wendigos can be either a powerful spirit of Nature, or a person who suddenly lusts for human flesh even when other food is easily available, and eventually becomes a sort of undead-ish monster that just lives to feast on living flesh. Sometimes it can be infectious, but more in a possessive way. Silver could prove to be a little more helpful, but unless you have the time you test out metals, I wouldn't worry about it and just shoot it in the chest with a flaregun, and hack it down with a nice ax while its chest cavity crackles merrily.

>>41223607

I don't think anyone capped it but I can retell it. I got a bunch more details after asking my dad about it.

>be me
>be eight years old
>be visiting family in India (Kerala province specifically)
>walking down the street with my dad in my family's town (Literally their town. Descended from the Kings who ruled that area and own all the property rights)
>fall behind and bump into a guy who just walked out of a store
>look up, only see a red and orange mask
>weird looking shaman guy in orange and red robes
>Back away, but the guy raises his hand and yells something I don't understand before walking away
>Suddenly, everyone in the street is avoiding me.
>This is India, the streets are fucking crowded, but there's a good 5-10 feet of empty space around me
>my dad comes back and I tell him what happened
>he immediately drags me back home
>calls a bunch of my aunts and other female family members
>Has my grandmother lead them in some kind of ritual
>We end up leaving the next day
>My mother does a ritual for me and my sister every few days when we get back Stateside
>Has me chant the Hanuman Chalisa every morning
>Carries out a ritual to Vishnu every full moon
>Eventually, end up going to college and told to continue chanting
>Do for a few weeks but eventually quit
>Month later, sister ends up with leukemia
>Little after that, I end up with an Autoimmune disorder that ends up damaging the nerves near my eyes permanently
[Cont.]

>>
>>41224479

>Sister is mostly better now but her athletic prospects are shot
>Nerve damage makes it slightly more difficult to drive, read, use computer, etc.
>Eventually ask my mom and dad about the whole thing
>Mom says that she was just warding off the Evil Eye

Dad told me later on that my grandparents had a few Sikhs and Vaishnivite Priests drive the Black Magician out of town and away from some Evil Temple Nearby. Apparently, without the Temple, the guy is powerless. The Priests also consecrated it so it couldn't be used for evil anymore. Dad also said that Mom's family is favored by Hanuman so they get divine protection that extends to me and my sister. Who knew.

Important Note on Faith Based Defense:

Holding up a Crucifix will do jackshit unless you believe in God and believe that the crucifix will protect you. If you aren't Christian, or truly do not believe in a Higher Power, you're better off running.

On top of that, the strength behind a symbol's defense depends on the amount of belief empowering the deity it represents. Holding up an Ankh or a Hammer of Thor will, usually, be less effective than a Crucifix or a Star of David. However, if the belief of the person is particularly strong, then it will be just as a effective.

However, it is entirely possible to defend yourself using symbols that do not belong to deities. Holding up a dollar bill might provide you with an equivalent amount of defense as a crucifix, provided that you actually Believe in it enough.
