Welcome to VR-BBEG Quest, the quest with a large number of capital letters! Last thread, John Smith, retired old man of THE FUTURE, went on a quest to hunt an animal to sacrifice, and ended up burning down a forest. This thread, you continue to add to your team's trauma.

Character sheet: http://pastebin.com/b2t8hgJ1
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=VR-BBEG%20Quest
Twitter: https://twitter.com/Shattershard

This will be a short thread today, updates may be a little shorter so we can speed through more than previously.

>You have 24 stat points to spend!

“Good work,” you tell the NPCs as you stride, ever-regal, over to them. The realism of the game is impressive – you can even smell the thick smoke billowing from the trees, and hear the individual crackles beneath the roaring flames. Being able to walk with this ease and speed is far more astonishing, though. “We've dealt with an important threat to the kingdom, and may have obtained a useful ally.”

“We burned down Vienta's national forest,” Nero whispers, still staring at the treeline. His words are hard to make out, thanks to his hands clasped over his mouth. “Gods above! Our forestry industry! The animals!”

Valiant looks less horrified and more upset. “I didn't get to stab the big green thing,” she grumbles, obviously put-out.

You nod in what may look like sympathy. The fact remains that you haven't completed your quest; and as much as a giant fire monster may come in handy later, you need to get your priorities in order. That Greenspawn may have been strong, but it was stupid, and the players... might be a bit smarter. The non-teenagers, at least. The sooner you get stronger yourself, the better.

“For now, we have to focus on more immediate matters, and other things to stab,” you say, patting her leather-clad, ash-stained shoulder. “We still need a sacrifice for the festival, and we only have – Nero, how long?”

“T-two more days, my Lord...”

“Two days to find a suitable beast?” You consider. “Very well. Any ideas on where to find something suitable?”

Despite their odd reluctance, you manage to encourage a few suggestions out of them.

>Wait here and capture something fleeing the fire (Olian and Nero's suggestion)
>Take advantage of the dying light, and hunt for nocturnal monsters on the plains (Heinlein's)
>Go to town, wake people up and demand to know if there's anything threatening them (Valiant's)

>Private Kit vir Heinlein – short-bow, now level 21
>Private Gertrus Valiant – longsword, now level 22

---

There's no point in running around at night, when there's a well-lit forest full of animals and monsters right here – and anything strong that makes it out is going to already be weakened, right? “We'll stay here and wait for something to come out,” you decide, allowing Nero and Olian to have their way. They certainly look relieved.

While the five of you spread out, paying little attention to the smaller, often-singed animals that manage to escape from the trees, Valiant eases over to you. Now you're focusing on her, you can't help but realise her eyes are somewhat manic.

“Sir, I was wondering – my father is Sir Gorum Valiant,” (she puffs up at the name) “and he says you beat him in a duel just last year. Is it true?” Her gaze on you is almost awestruck – apparently Sir Valiant, at least in his daughter's eyes, is impressive in his own right.

You nod, eyeing her warily; and as Russell doesn't panic or talk about reprogramming everything, you guess it's true.

Valiant perks up even further. “Then – he also said, sir, that I should apprentice myself to a worthy warrior, to better train my skills. Si- My lord, if it isn't too impern-inpert- rude, can I train under you? Please, sir?!”

Ah.

She's a lunatic.

You manage to refrain from sighing or rubbing your (now barely-wrinkled!) forehead, as you find some appropriately noble-sounding words. “My job is a busy one, but I'm sure I can spare the time, provided you're up to my standards.”

The change is immediate – her spine goes stiff, and a salute is snapped, so crisp and sharp, you wonder if she might actually be professional- no, there's her eyes, mad as before, and a crazy grin to match them, God help you.

“Sir! I won't let you down! Anyone gets in your way, they'll get my sword in their guts, sir! Unless they're a ghost or something that doesn't have any guts, sir!”

“Right.”

“But I can try to stab 'em anyway, sir!”

“Just... focus on the woods for now,” you manage, forcing a smile and pointedly looking at the giant, flaming, mess ahead of you all.

She salutes again and scuttles away, still grinning, leaving you at yours; and not five minutes later, as you start to re-think the decision, a giant shape hurls itself from the fire, fur scorches in large patches.

'Greater Panther', the name reads, 'Lv. 56'. Its health is at about ¾, thanks to the fire, and it stumbles briefly on the grass, taking a moment to catch its breath.

Not too tricky.

You draw your rapier, the others taking the cue and readying from defensive to the offence, not noticing you refreshing their barriers. “Everyone, attack.”

“I don't have a we-” Nero begins, but it's ignored; everyone else moves, Olian and Valiant charging forwards (Valiant with a happily battle-scream), Heinlein clumsily nocking an arrow, and you feeling like you've barely stepped forwards, with the speed you move.

You get in first thanks to an impressive Agility stat, thrusting the rapier into the surprised animal's side. It yowls, turning on you, claws sweeping out at you as Valiant arrives, longsword falling on it, and you realise it's health is now down to only 32 HP.

I've put in 10 Con and 10 Magi, as there was general agreement on them. You can easily tank it anyway though, you're level 100.

This is basically tutorial mode so I can get a grasp on combat and you guys can level up a bit and see how things work. If you don't cakewalk your way through current opponents, something's seriously messed up. It's if you go dragon-hunting and the like, or when players enter the game, that things get harder.
>>
>>41222209
Tank that shit then, the we guilt trip her for hurting us due to her fuckup. Makes her both more loyal and is an attempt to snap some sense into her.

>>
There's no way you're letting her kill this creature, after all the trouble you went through to get it.

Never mind the animal itself; you focus your attention on your wannabe apprentice, the damn brat who doesn't even have the sense to pull her blows. At least you have the excuse of not knowing your own strength just yet.

A flick of your rapier, and you easily parry her blade aside, even as the panther's claws tear into your side.

Ow.

'Oh, we're at twenty percent real pain,' Russell chips in, voice muffled. It sounds like he's eating. 'Is that okay?'

“Don't kill it!” you snap, moving back slightly, putting her confused, horrified expression aside, as a few Barriers box it in. That'll hold it for the moment. “We need it alive!”

>MP: 481/1100

Valiant looks at you as if you kicked her, while Olian holds his spear awkwardly, having arrived in time to accomplish precisely nothing.

That overeager punk needs a good talking-to – but certainly not now, and maybe not in public. You give her a look that promises a thorough verbal shredding later (her skittish reaction is satisfying), and deal with the matter at hand.

“Nero, how did you plan to get the sacrifice back to the castle?”

He approaches a little warily (as if you'd let the – hm, well, you COULD let the Barriers fall, you are meant to be evil, after all...) and pulls a cloth bag out of a robes pocket. “A powder that should knock it out for a while, once inhaled. If you make a hole in the Barrier, I could drop some in?”

From the way he's staying away from the snarling panther, you suspect he'd be happier if someone else tossed the powder in, but there's little point in wasting time – you drop part of the Barrier, loosening the bag drawstring, and waft it around, renewing the Barrier after.

Your lackeys relax as the cat spends a few seconds swaying, before collapsing quite thoroughly, leading you to decide on an important topic; who's going to carry it back?

>Summon roll: 68+10 = 78

It's the work of a moment to Summon the horses again, and only a few more to call something big enough to carry your catch; a giant tortoise - six feet tall - which stares at you with large, glistening eyes, and makes a huffing noise as your team manages to shove the unconscious panther onto its shell.

Trotting back to the castle is somewhat slower going than the other way around, but the tortoise is surprisingly speedy for, well, a tortoise, and the extra time on a horse doesn't hurt, either.

>Bareback Riding now lv. 12!

The guards at the castle gates stare in bewilderment at your approaching group, but fire off salutes as they recognise you, and the gates open easily. It's now dark, lights glowing from the castle windows, and Nero offers you a shake smile as several younger priests manage to bundle the animal off your Summon.

“Thank you for your assistance, my Lord,” he says, sounding glad to be back. “It was most... interesting.”

You clasp his shoulder, reassuring. “Don't worry. I will only require your services on occasion.” At his relieved look, you clarify, “You'll mostly be for the benefit of anyone with me. I'll probably start hunting a dragon tomorrow, so make sure to pack.”

Stepping away from his strangled scream, you call over your shoulder, “If not, do call on me when you want the forest regrown! I'm sure I can call something up to help.”

Dismissing the horses and tortoise as you walk away, you spot your lackeys removing some of their heavier armour and talking to each other in the courtyard. Now back at home and still alive, they seem far happier.

Hello everybody. I just clicked on the thread in the catalog because of the abbreviated name, then read the opening post. Then I had to read the archived threads and now I am here. What have you done to me?

OP, concerning the character sheet mechanics, I guess every level of a skill needs an additional 100 points more than the level before? How do you decide how many points an action gives?
Also, leveling up seems to be quite easy, the soldiers jumped from levels 4-12 to 20-22. We must be careful, those neckbeard players will grind fast.
>>
>>41224775
Ha, good one m8.
>>
>>41224780
They're power-leveling - the monster they fought was dozens of levels above them.
Really, all it shows is that players' levels tend to more easily jump to the current highest-level player.
>>
>>41224780
>the soldiers jumped from levels 4-12 to 20-22
Isn't xp sharing with a considerably higher level player great?
>>
>>41224780
Welcome, anon, hope you keep liking it!

I'm playing fairly fast and loose with XP for the moment, , points are far easier to gain at lower levels than the same action at a higher one, which is why riding has levelled up so quickly.
I mostly just go with what's sensible, or do a quick bit of math including your level, your level of whatever skill you're using, and how many actions you've taken with that skill versus the level of what you're facing.

The soldiers have leveled up thanks to sharing the kills of burning down an entire forest, so have more stats, but their skill levels haven't increased. They hit harder, but not more skilfully!
>>
>>41224780
>4-12 to 20-22
And they all gained the same amount of xp.
So the xp scaling is pretty intense once you get past a point.

AYY LMAO!

Time to deal with the brat, who desperately needs to learn some self-control – or at least how to use her damn fool brain. “Private Valiant, with me!”

At the harshness of your call, the girl snaps to attention, her teammates backing off slightly, looking alarmed. You quirk an eyebrow at her questioning look, motioning her over and making sure to keep a small frown on your face; from her tiny gulp, she gets the message.

You lead her inside the castle, the other two guards throwing sympathetic looks after her, and she trots along obediently, apparently smart enough to realise now is the time to bite her tongue. As soon as you're in your office, however, her fidgety manner breaks as she blurts out, “Sir! I apologise for trying to kill that panther, I thought we were... trying to... kill the panther...”

She trails off, and you cross your arms, moulding your expression into a more disappointed look. “Valiant, I understand your enthusiasm, but was it not obvious the beast was close to death?” You ignore the fact you'd ordered them to attack – she's unlikely to point it out.

“Sir, I – I didn't realise how close it was to death.” She bites her lower lip, face reddening, and you spot a suspiciously glimmering spot at the corners of her eyes. Jesus. She'd better not cry. “I'm s-sorry, sir! I'll pay more attention in the future!”

You give a low sigh, holding it just long enough to make her stare at you, the tears now obviously approaching. How much of a damn rookie is this brat? “You'll have to learn fast, Valiant. That wasn't the best impression you could give me.” You lift a hand to your side 'casually', mock-wincing at the now barely-there pain, watching her flinch.

“I'll learn, sir!” She hands clench by her sides, eyes fixed somewhere behind you, face set. “I'll be the best in the whole army, barring you, sir, I swear! Whatever it takes!”

Sounds like you've acquired a loyal lackey, and as far as you're aware, that's what every villain needs. Putting on a gentle smile, you strike the final blow. “That's good, Valiant. Considering your father, I'm expecting great things from you.”

You've never seen a kid look so proud.

It's not as if you need to sleep, and Russell is helpful (for once) in directing you to the library. After Valiant is dismissed, you're straight there, determined to get your time's worth while the game is still closed to players.

It's beautiful.

Two levels of open balconys are above, stretching across the entire – room is too small a word for it. Three floors of books, lining every wall, and on the ground floor, so much shelving as to leave little space for walking, let alone a single, long table through the centre of the room for readers. No private chairs, here.

The librarian A.I. is... not the most helpful, being somewhat less intelligent than the ones you've dealt with so far, but gives vague directions regarding bestiaries, which you eventually find.

Rather than books full of writing, a pop-up appears when you open one book, summarising the information for you; disappointing, but you suppose the game isn't powerful enough to write entire books out.

Dragons come in a wide variety of types; they're born simply as regular dragons, and develop according to what magic they train in. A dragon born near water will tend to become a water dragon, a dragon in a volcano will likely become a fire dragon, and so on. Seems simple enough; so the likely place to find a water dragon is a coastline or island.

Immortal and strong beyond anyone but the greatest heroes, it seems that dragons are main things players will aspire to kill, rare as they are. The 'average' from dragon can hold territory dozens of miles square; particularly old ones can be the size of a small mountain, and hold an entire country as theirs, forbidding anyone to live there, or accepting tithes and being worshipped as gods.

Tch. Too damn lazy.

While you're there, you read on a few other subjects – ancient artefacts which sound like they give stat increases, with vague hints as to their locations; some basic geography, which adds more to your map; and a small book with activates the Teleport magic at level 1, a magic that drains a large amount of MP and only moves you an inch or so. Hopefully at higher levels, it'll be more useful.

Sounds like you'll need either an army or a great 'hero' to take down a dragon; but at level 100, and with a decent team, it shouldn't be too hard, should it?

Now early morning, people are starting to wake; and you have perhaps thre hours left before you, too, will have to emerge this fantasy, and get the gunk off you.

The town seems like a good place to start getting information; and the time to get there means more people may be awake.

You leave the library, actually feeling a little tired – you'll need to sleep once you get back to the real world – and head out, moving past the servants who are bustling around, lighting fires and cleaning rooms.

The guards at the gate hurry to let you through, the castle grounds lit by a barely-risen sun, and your replenished MP helps Summon a horse easily enough.

-

The town – Latipa ('You just reversed 'Capital' and took the C away, didn't you, Russell?' Uh – we didn't think anyone would notice...') - is large, easily big enough you could spend a day or two wandering around.

Unfortunately, you have other plans, ones that don't involve a decent cup of coffee and maybe picking up souvenirs for the family. Plans that involve stabbing dragons in the face, and being generally evil. And well-paid evil, at that.

You refuse the various quests blandly-smiling NPCs give you, turning down several basic tutorials (who needs twenty deer-skins, anyway?), taking in the details; the stalls setting up in the market square, evenly laid out on brick paths, the smell of fresh bread from the town bakery, stray cats fighting down an alley; it makes you wonder exactly how much processing power is going into something like this.

Maybe you should have negotiated a higher pay.

After aimless wandering only to find nothing, you have two hours before you're 'unplugged', and it's time to get focused.

Woo, caught me just as I was leaving.
You fighting dragon: I hope you have a cunning plan or pick a younger, weaker one...
Programmers: They're arguing over whether they should have magic 'regrow' things like that faster, or make it a giant quest for players, and whether burning an entire forest down should only give a set amount of XP rather than XP for every single thing that dies to it. Objects have been thrown.
Party: Valiant's morale has been restored, Heinlein is unimpressed the daughter of a mere knight is getting special attention and simultaneously relieved it's not her (you appear to be mad), Nero is confused over whether you're deliberately fucking with him, and Olian wants to quit and be a shoemaker.

>whether burning an entire forest down should only give a set amount of XP rather than XP for every single thing that dies to it. Objects have been thrown.
Two alternative options: Both and neither.
Both: Some XP for the forest itself, a portion of the XP for each creature.
Neither: Diminishing returns. In the first period of time, all creatures killed offer full or most of the normal XP. As time goes on, creatures killed offer less and less XP. Also works for automated mob farms/releasing summons into the wild to kill.

>>
Well we should kit up our "squire" abd look at bringing along one of our captains. Mooks are great and all but our pitch is having compitant commanders as well.
>>
>>41231610
We can make Valiant the commander and act as the string-puller.

Either way, recruiting a bunch of level 1 villagers/militia sounds suitably time saving.
>>
>>41232892
Valiant had a bit of crazy in her eyes, a commander should be somebody 100% sane who can keep a cool head in any situation.

We can build her up to be a scapegoat. When shit hits the fan and players begin to suspect somebody is secretly evil, there should be clues pointing to the crazy squire instead of the benevolent lord commander.

Another thing, we could play having a harmless but endearing quirk (don't forget, we are powerful but harmless) and give players fetch quests that help the quirk. E.g. collecting rare and beautiful birds/flowers: "bring me the elusive 'Western parotia' bird-of-paradise" "oh no, my prized 'trumpet manucode' has escaped" (the captcha says flowers, wtf)
>>
>>41235153
A little bit of crazy can substitute charisma, at times. Well, maybe someone else.

Oh, that quest line thing sounds good. Even better if it's actually part of contract deals we have with summoned spirits.
>Sacrifice X exotic animal
>Make Y rare bouquet
>Do Z which is the natural result of a quest to get A
>>
>>41235153
The quest line could even be something competitive between us and some other nobles, like the 19th century British lords had: "if you bring the 'western parotia' to me instead of to duke XY, you'll get Z", with having the biggest and best collection being our (apparent) primary driving force.
"The lord commander can't be evil, he just cares for his stupid hobby"
>>
>>41235329
Ooh, yeah; a few separate nobles offering different rewards for the same (unique) quest item - cash, a potion of Raise X Stat, some magic item...
>>
>>41235329
>>41238563
>Start fads within the nobility for exotic feathers, silks, and leathers
>Add in monster eggs to the delicacies(and compete with people trying to raise pets).
>All the potions were make for rewards are above average in stats and duration, but explicitly do not stack with other buffs.
