"Firing!" You announce as you pull your trigger. Almost immediately, six missiles sail away from under your wings, homing in on the oncoming F-111s. On your flanks, you can see Lilian and Lara's missiles streaking by to contribute.

And before the missiles even hit, you're already switching over to your cannons and let loose a long burst at the lead F-111 in an effort to take him down before he can zoom past you. You see the F-111's nose and cockpit disintegrate under the hail of cannon fire, but it still stubbornly flies forward. You see most of your and your wingmate's missiles streak in towards the F-111's, who make no effort to dodge, which seemed a bit suspicious to you.

However, this close, you also catch sight of the fighter escorts. You see multiple F-4 Phantoms and MiG-21s, at least a half dozen of each, as well as a very familiar looking F-14 Tomcat and F-20 Tigershark hiding among the formation. They weren't firing just yet, giving you an opportunity to get a first strike.

Something didn't feel right. After your countless battles against various foes, you knew that not even the fanatical One Belka pilots were this suicidal. Judging from their singleminded desire to stick to their planned route, as well as the lack of an sort of self preservation or complex maneuvering, you could only conclude that the F-111s were drones of some kind. Bait for some kind of trap!

"Wild Cards, Break! BREAK!" You yell as you pull hard on your control stick, pulling your Eagle into a high G turn. You chest tightens and your plane vibrates wildly under the strain, and you can see Lara and Lilian pulling similarly hard maneuvers in their respective fighters.

Meanwhile, your missiles all finally slam head on into the F-111s, completely destroying nearly all of them in great balls of fire.

"What the hell!?" Lara yelps. "Radar's going crazy!"

"Wild Cards, I'm reading heavy interference in your area!" Loki yells in another ill-timed warning. "I've lost track of all contacts!"

You twist your head to see that where the F-111s used to be were heavy clouds of glittering chaff. So that was it. Using drone controlled F-111s as a sacrifice to lure fighters into a kill zone.

"My missile lock is going crazy!" Lilian yells. "Targeting is no good!"

"They just seeded this entire area with ECM." You grunt. Missiles are useless. They're trying to turn this into a gunfight."

"Without missiles, those Dahl fighters have the advantage! Get out of there!" Loki yells.

"And have them on our tail? Yeah right!" Lara grunts.

You see Lilian's radio click on, as if she's about to say something, but it clicks off just as fast. You kind of wonder what she was going to say, but there's no sense worrying about it now.

You get in on the merge with Mickey and Shiba and quickly try to determine who to go after first. Mickey in his F-14 had a craft that was more on par with yours, and with the ECM, similarly could not take advantage of his missiles to attack you from long range. However, the guy was a war veteran, and no doubt outclassed you in terms of sheer experience. You don't really know if you could handle him in a straight up battle. On the other hand, Shiba was probably relatively green compared to you, but his plane was much better suited to the tight confines of this ECM space.

You angle your Eagle's nose over on Mickey's tail, banking on you being able to get him down before Shiba can get on your tail with his Tigershark. You know that Lilian is watching your back, but being outnumbered by the enemy here, you couldn't count on her to swoop in the save you all the time.

Sure enough, you see the the Tigershark bank sharply to the right, looping around to get in on your tail. Meanwhile, Mickey hits his afterburners to get more distance between himself and you, making it tougher to get your cannon on him while at the same time buying more time for Shiba to get into position. Then again, you could try your luck and fire off your missiles, but you're not sure if they'll hit, even with the extra shots.

You manage to get your crosshair right over Mickey's Tomcat for a split second and you pull the trigger, letting a short burst out. You see the crimson tracers lance out at the Tomcat, but seemingly a the last second, Mickey's plane frustratingly slithers out of your crosshairs, initiating a vicious powerclimb to get himself out of the line of fire. This leaves you in a bit of a conundrum. Do you pursue him and risk Shiba getting a deflection shot on you, or turn around and engage Shiba and hope Mickey doesn't bounce you in the process?

Meanwhile, it looked as if Lara and Lilian were having their hands full just dealing with the numerically superior F-4s and MiG-21s. You notice about three or four less enemy aircraft, but they are successfully keeping your wingmates from being able to support you.

You let off another burst of cannon fire, and this time Mickey doesn't have any clever tricks to get out of your line of fire. You see sparks and flashes as your rounds impact Mickey's Tomcat. You see one of his engines immediately flare out, and the Tomcat plummets from the sky towards the ground as it stalls out.

"Heh, nice shooting, kid." Mickey chuckles as his Tomcat tumbles out of view.

Normally, you'd write off damage like that as an elimination, but with an Ace like Mickey, you couldn't be too sure.

Suddenly, you see flashes of tracers shoot above your cockpit. You yelp instinctively and pull further back on your stick, ending your climb and transition into a dive to prevent from flying into Shiba's lead. If he had held off fire for just another second he'd have cut your fighter in half. That was close. Too close.

Dear god, in terms of a dogfight three minutes was a goddamn eternity. Another stream of tracers snaps you back to reality as you're reminded that Shiba's Tigershark was still hounding you. In a knife fight like this, you were at a disadvantage, as his older Tigershark had much better performance at lower speeds than your Eagle. Trying to fight him on his own terms was risky. It would be safer to accelerate and get out of the ECM cloud so that you could use your missiles to level the playing field, but that would mean putting yourself out of position to help Lara and Lilian if they needed it.

Or you could call your wingmates to help. Unfortunately, you knew Lara was really trigger happy and you had serious doubts whether she cared about not killing Shiba or not. Lilian... was a unknown factor that you were not really looking forward to testing in a situation like this.

No matter what, you had to keep the battle solely between the two of you. You crane your head back to try and get an eye on Shiba's Tigershark, trying to gauge how close he was to you. You see he's quite a ways back behind you. Close enough to stay in gun range, but far back enough to ensure that he wouldn't be caught off guard by desperation maneuvers like cobras or sudden braking. No, in order to get the drop on him you'd have to genuinely outmaneuver him, which meant pushing your Eagle to its limits.

You begin weaving your plane side to side, trying to lure Shiba into engaging in a scissors maneuver. Glancing behind you again, you can see that he's fallen for the bait, weaving from side to side in an attempt to get a good shot at you. You wait patient through a few more weaves before pulling on your stick, using your thrust vectoring and canards to their fullest effect to pull the sharpest turn you can manage, snapping your nose around and bringing it right in line with Shiba's Tigershark for a split second. In the the eternity of that split second, you see the Tigershark frozen in your crosshairs. Timing was going to be everything in this.
