I bet you're so retarded that you actually think that any NPC who accompanies the party for any reason for a prolonged period of time is a DMPC.

Okay, question /tg/. The current campaign I'm running has had a few NPCs that hang with the party. The first was this Dwarf sergeant, absolute bro-tier. He died in a fight with a very strong Orc death cult. He was so liked one of my players, his back-up character is the Dwarf's cousin.

Now they're buddies with this Wood-Elf spellsword who is forming a military coalition to reclaim a bunch of land from the Drow. Is the Wood Elf a DMPC? He's a bit stronger than the other party members, and does plenty of important stuff, but he nevers hogs the story, and 3/4 of the players like him. Did I accidentally make a DMPC /tg/? And if I did, am I doing something wrong?
>>

If N: Stop and figure out why they aren't having fun, and then figure out how that can be dealt with.

It's not true. This kind of situation could work out fine.

For example the party is playing as Devils that were summoned by the DMPC to be his army. The DMPC is lower level but has some kind of hold on them. It's pretty obvious that he's the BBEG from the start.

He's definitely a DMPC since he adventures full time with the party, but that doesn't mean he can't be a good character or even stuff like comic relief. An incompetent CN summoner leading around a bunch of pure LE beings as an army and fucking up at every turn.

Maybe add a pixie paladin with an abysmal wisdom score to the group and you're all set.

>DMPC was actually good.
>Nobody complained about him
>Campaign is still ongoing
I don't know why the hate for DMPCs but they're fine in my book.
>>
>>41307668
I guess it's a magnifying effect for bad (mostly immature, I guess) GMs. I've played alongside many DMPCs that were just fine too, but I can imagine a GM who's trying to shove his dick down people's throats alread would become even more insufferable when he has an outlet to spew his nonsense from right in the party
>>
>>41307668
Because using them is one of the lamest things a DM can do.
>>
>>41307765
The current one in my group is not "lame". He's a human alchemist focused on creating the panacea. A cure for all mortal and magical pains. In his testing phases we get to try out some cool random potion effects like growing an extra pair of arms on the rogue or the sorcerer turning blue for a week. He is also fairly combat capable as his bombs do a moderate amount of damage.
>>
>>41307919
Maybe his DMPC is not lame.
But your DM is.

>"And a half-share of loot. Guy deserves more than a couple silver a day after that."
>Jack Jackson becomes the richest peasant in recent history driving a few wagons and eventually hiring a staff to make his job easier.

From what I can tell, the big thing is that this PC and NPC/DMPC relation is consensual for the PCs.

The party could have 12 NPCs that follow them around, but if it happened in an organic way with the PCs then everything is cool.

Oh I've heard this one. Apparently, this guy did some one-on-one with the DM, with lots of world building and higher level stuff, then a NPC group begins fucking everything up. DM made him the BBEG for that group, and this was the final showdown or something. don't remember how it went.

I made a dmpc once, a near constantly drunk dwarf with dozens of stories that ended with him banging the kings daughter.

Then the party found out he was the kings son and had deserted his dwarf hold in its time of greatest need to squander his wealth on booze.

Should I kill him off? Did I make a good DMPC?

Dragonloli DMPCs trying to hook up with players, ignored the game's rules, the works. All in all, not actually a bad DM, despite the above. His crazyness was at least entertaining.

2. The kind of tranny who you can't say anything remotely offensive around ever or it breaks out crying. Had a fetish for guys being pregnant, and tried to write it into every one of his characters. Group split apart out of awkwardness.

I find as a DM they split your focus between being a DM and a PC. I tried having a DMPC a couple of times but it just never really worked cause it felt like anytime I took action as the DMPC it was railroading since I knew everything already even if I wasnt trying to railroad.

As a player the DMPCs I've had have been meh really. Nothing special, didnt add, didnt take anything.

Nowadays if I have to fill up a party with extra characters I go with som NPCs that tag along with some backstory and opinions but dont take any action really. And it's always at least 2 NPCs, otherwise it might accidentally turn into a DMPC.

Why?
>>
>>41323503
Different ideological or philosophical standpoints on sexuality and gender.

Some people just think they're gross, these people you can just ignore.

Some people think they're abominations in the eyes of God, you can ignore these too.

Some people think they're universally crazy and awful, this may be due to hearsay or actual heuristic contact with genuinely crazy and awful trans-persons, these people are best treated with a degree of cautious understanding, like any other person who, through experience has developed a bad impression of a group of people.

Then there are those who think trans-people put too much importance on percieved sex, to the extent that they're willing to undergo invasive, and often imperfect surgical procedures, despite allegedly "trans"-cending the dichotomy of the sexes: These people may have something of a point, but you're under no obligation to agree with them.

Since I've never had a problem with the one Trans Person I played with:

Not sure if my GM is being That DM with his DMPCs or if they're just NPCs. He currently is GMing 3 parties comprised of 3 players in a Star Wars FFG game... Every party has a DMPC, who he says he tailored to fill the "gaps" the parties had.

> One party is really combat capable, so their DMPC is an inquisitive force healer who just pays for a room on the ship and heals the party when they come back and make lore checks for them. Probably the least DMPC of his 3.
> The 2nd party's DMPC is a "lawful good" saber tank, who just is hyper defensive and the defacto leader of the party since he's the glue holding the party together since the bounty hunters player keeps threatening to leave the party for "story reasons". Possibly the worst offender, but I think the bounty hunter is being a dick.
>Third DMPC is another Saber Monkey who's more offensive, and is generally the one who gets the party into trouble, but makes up for it by saving their butts from the fire. He's not the party lead, and is just a useful guy the party has kept around since he is generally speaking useful despite his hit tempered quirks. Sorta the middle ground between the two.

I would be shocked if tye surgeon would be fired for refusing to go through with it.

It is not "life saving," despite what some activista may tell you. To the medical profession, it is only lifesaving if it preasents a clear and undeniable risk to continued bodily function (if we don't go in, your heart will fucking stop working, or your kidneys will shut down).

If the doctor feels the client isn't ready for a non-life saving procedure, they can turn them down.

>implying all delusions are the same
Why don't you leave the brain science to the professionals, armchair scalpeljockey.
>>
>DMPC is an extremely lazy do nothing NEET who happens to be "the chosen one"
>Party are the "bodyguards" hired by the mysterious order/wizards coven/rightful King to protect him, knowing full well they fucked up with raising the chosen one
>the party has to escort him everywhere, keep him out of trouble and basically do all the hard work, earn all the cool trophies, while somehow everyone thinks the DMPC did it
>players get given the option of joing in the BBEG and killing the DMPC if they want
>Or players fulfill the prophecy, and let the "chosen one" take up the horrible duty of being sealed with the evil into wherever, or put him on the throne and use him as a puppet king for their own desires

would that be a satisfying enough switch up of the DMPC tropes?
>>
Are DMPCs always a bad thing? My groups are a tad small so run one who basically just does combat and occasionally tosses out a hint when the PCs are stuck.
>>
>>41306257
I'm sure the twist will be the undead were sentient and non-hostile, and the BBEG tricked him into killing what were essentially innocents. It comes up more often than you'd think.
>>
>>41325335
Depends on the GM, really. Its really one of those cases of people talking/remembering the bad points and forgetting/ignoring the good or okay points of a subject. Not all DMPCs are bad, its just that the bad ones are pretty memorable.

>>41325671

They are guilty of breaking circle of life. Any paladin who denies it is lawful-autist

My friends and I all rotate being DM, but we also still play our characters while we DM. It helps move the session forward.

Most undead are unwillingly stolen from their afterlife and forced into subservience. They simply want to go back but cannot until they have fulfilled their duties and are released from this hell they have been brought into.

I'd be onboard if the overall tone of the game was humorous, the NPC was really hammed up, the NPC didn't talk very much, and all the players were in on the joke.

I kinda, sorta did this one, but with what used to be a PC.

See, our DM was going to quit DMíng for a while, schedule issues, but we were in the middle of a campaign. So i offer to take over a Dm but ask him not to tell the rest. My sorcerer was already CN (mercenary who loves his freedom CN, not "fireball in the marketplace LOLrandom" CN) and rather powerhungry, so i jumped of the deep end into evil. On his last session, we found the dragon that was or BBEG at the time, and confronted himmin his own lair. It was a hard fight, but we won. Then, during the victory celebrations, i slap the cleric on his shoulder, and this happens.

>me: "i whistle the command stab my (poisoned) dagger in his back"
>whole party: wtf?
> crossbow bolts fly in from several directions
>all poisoned
> Part goes down to the bolts, the poisons and the magic that i have left
>The barbarian and the bard are still concious, were knocked out by ability damage.
> I call one of the assailants out of the shadows, a large ogre with a greatclub, to deal with them.
> before the ogre can swing, the bard asks me one question: "why?"
> "please don't take it personal. I've grown quite fond of you, you know. Bu i can't let you stand in the way of my work, now can i?"
> Orge knocks his lights out.

> At this point everyone is absolutely furious, both at me, and the DM playing along, treating this blatant teamkilling like i declared an attack on a goblin or something.
> everyone goes quiet as the DM stands up and walks away from the table and i take the seat behind the DM screen,
>I start talking to my thouroughly confused fellows.
> "As you wake up, still sore from the arrows, the poisons, and the merciful greatclub, you see that a great deal of the treasure hoard is missing, about a fifth, mostly magical items. The dragon you killed as beenn expertly butcherd, and many parts are missing"
> " You two tricked us."
> "Yes. If you want revenge, 21:00 next week, my place"
>>
>>41327391

Clever bastard.

> "I whistle the command AND stab my dagger in his back"

Anyway, i had pizza ready next session, so they forgave me.

DMPC is not "bad GM'ing", it's "Chaotic Evil chacters rolplayers" fault.

My actual group always picks up people for a ride, solve their problems, buy their stuff, chat with them for a while.
Most importantly, they remember their names, what they like and what they want.

If they need someone to read some old viking runes, they know Torhild Redbeard, the guy with a kilt from the tavern may or may not be useful. And if they bring enough food for his wife and seven childs for a year, he will come along anywhere. Probably they'll need to find some old Torhild relative on the other side of the map.
Because there is no "Scholar guild" or Viking wizard to read the runes. Ehiter they find someone to help them, or not.
DMPC appear when your party can't, or most commonly, won't, solve the problems the GM puts them in.
You have to remind that the GM is also playing the game. If you dodge every single plot to go murderhoboning, play a videogame. Don't do it on paper. Don't do that to your GM.
It's immensely boring, and impotent, to prepare the next session knowing that the only thing your players care, is how high the monster statblock pile is.

Don't equate augmentation with transability. You embarrass yourself.
>>
>>41329624
Yeah, I mean wanting augmentation doesn't stem from mental illness, does it?
>>
>>41329624
What? I'm not. I'm saying that because wanting a chrome arm for style purposes, that is 1 to 1 with a normal arm is frowned upon in the medical community from what I'm aware of.

Something about major invasive elective surgery.

I've had this happen before.

>Saving the world by chasing down wizard asshole and destroying monsters he's summoning from ancient ruins and shit
>Finally corner the wizard after the fourth one and beat the shit out of him
>"You hero types never think things through. Did you even bother to think about what you were doing? What you were killing?"
>figure he's playing mind games so I kill him just to be safe
>Go back to land I've saved from monsters, they've been overrun by demons
>Turns out the monsters were guardians that protected the lands, sitting in the spirit realm fighting these demons back
>When they got summoned to this world they would have just chilled out until they went back, still keeping watch
>Never put 2 and 2 together to realize that the town had a lot of really weird styling that was themed around the guardians
>time to be a hero
>kill the demons. long hard battle uses most of my consumables and leaves me pretty fucked up
>surviving villagers overwhelm me, tie me down and try to sacrifice me in an attempt to ressurect their guardians
>manage to get out of that shit, get the hell away from there as fast as possible
>currently being hunted by heroes.

Oh, that's not insane, it's just stupid. It's not in your best interest but that point my conscience does not compel me to stop you. It's your right to act on sane (if stupid) thought as long as you're not drawing tax dollars to get it or otherwise hurting anyone. Just keep that shit covered on sunny days on the highway.
