You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami, violent murderer, and one of Karakura Town's spiritual protectors.

Until lunchtime, you felt as though you were still sleeping. Things seemed unclear and muddy, time flew by and slowed down to a crawl at seemingly random times, words and numbers were jumbled and distorted into incomprehensible noises and foreign symbols, it sometimes felt cold enough to have you shivering. It felt like the smallest provocation could send you off into hysterics, though you did manage to hold on without breaking out into any fits. You find yourself questioning the reality of any given situation that occurred this morning, unsure of whether the vagueness of your memory is caused by your lack of interest in the event or if it really was just a dream that you saw when you briefly dozed off during class.

It feels strange when a random blink suddenly causes your vision to clear up and your consciousness to obtain a much firmer footing. You're halfway through your meal, chopsticks raised and on their way to deliver another bite of rice. You set them back down into your lunchbox for a minute and look around.

You're having lunch up on the roof with your friends, as always. Rain refuses to pour, still, even though the stormy clouds and the harsh wind seem to expect differently. You think you recall a bit of an argument with Akemi - not incited by you, as you weren't in a state to do so - that concluded in a compromise, with this now being the last lunch up here until the weather clears up.

They talk about trivial things; you can finally join them in their chat, which seems to lighten up everyone's moods just a little bit. They probably did notice that you've been behaving strangely, and probably kept even their relief hidden so as to not give away their discovery.

When you finish your meal, there's still a little time left before the bell rings. You recall today's plan concerning Paul - you'll be testing him for the ability to see spirits, as Naoko believes that he can do it and simply denies it out of fear of being considered mentally ill. You haven't really worked out your plan of action in detail, but you'll use Soul Candy to turn into a Shinigami and then have your friends point out your location to him.

Hopefully with Naoko and Ren's help we can set it up so he reveals himself if he CAN see spirits, but do we have any contingency if he doesn't? Just assume he can't?

You take Ren and Naoko aside for a minute and tell them that you'll be taking it slow. It's interesting, but attracting attention isn't a good idea, so until the coast is clear, you won't act. They agree to your plan. Ren notes how it'd be really awkward if someone got curious about what they were talking about and pointing at.

When the school day passes and people quickly disperse out of the classroom, your two spiritually aware friends linger about and stealthily shadow your brother. In the meantime, you retire to a bathroom, swap with Chappy and turn into a Shinigami. When you reunite with Naoko and Ren, you find them stalking the student council room, which he had apparently entered just now. They're hesitant to enter, in case there's someone else in there. Just when you're about to phase through and check it out yourself, your brother exits out of it and heads back to your classroom.

You whisper to the two that it's time, and after nodding, they enter the room. You follow after them. Paul seems surprised to see them. "Huh? Is something wrong? Did you two need something?"

Ren walks up to his side and shakes her head in your direction. "Do you know why Clarissa's dressed up like that?" Paul glances towards you in slight confusion.

Your brother resumes to stare at you for a short while, forehead wrinkling in something resembling a mix of confusion and concentration. "No... I don't know." He mutters, his voice somewhat distant. You step aside; his tense gaze doesn't follow you until Ren points out that you've moved.

"Why are you dressed up like that?" He seems to finally relax a bit and lifts a brow, confusion taking precedence over whatever difficulties he's been experiencing. "It's a strange outfit, but I guess you're cosplaying as something? Is that it, do you guys want to start your own anime club?"

"I'm a ghost, idiot."

Paul immediately frowns and adjusts his glasses, turning away with a tired sigh. "...Is this a prank of some kind? Either way, if you don't have any business with me, leave me alone, I have work to do."

You get the urge to smack him, but you still vividly recall what happened to the previous ghost that touched your brother, so you calm yourself down.

"I'll prove to you that I'm a ghost." You declare, returning your brother's attention back to you. His displeased, skeptical frown is almost daring you to do that. You were about to roll up your sleeve, but then you remembered that there's absolutely no need for that, and simply push your whole arm right through the nearest desk. You even twitch your fingers on the other side of it to show off that it is, in fact, your arm.

Paul's reaction turns confused again, his confidence stifled. When he makes a step towards you, or rather, the desk that you used to prove yourself, you move back a bit, still not feeling particularly safe about staying close to him. The young man begins a brief inspection, eyes carefully scrutinizing the desk from underneath his glinting glasses.

"There's a hole in it." He suddenly declares. The certainty with which he does that is a lot firmer than you've expected, so it catches you off-guard for just a moment. "I really hope you can fix this, because otherwise, you'll be in trouble for damaging school property."

"What the fuck do you mean?" You finally blurt out and walk up to him, provoked into forgetting your fear of standing too close to your brother. Is he really too stubborn to admit that you were right to the point of making shit up, now? As you look at the desk in question, you-...

"...What?" Your eyes widen as you look down on it. "T-there... there was no hole in it!" You exclaim and slam your hands onto it. You're not really sure why you did that; you think you doubted the validity of this object for just a second. In the middle of the desk, right at the spot which you phased into, is a circular hole roughly matching the width of your arm. The tiled floor is visible on the other side. "There wasn't! Right? Naoko? Ren?"

(1/2)
>>
>>41302608
They seem just as flabbergasted as you, but they do chime in with agreements, if somewhat hesitantly. Paul has already lost interest, arms crossed over his chest. "Well? What other trick are you going to show me? Or are you done?"

Naoko walks on over and examines the desk as well. She even puts her own arm through it to confirm its existence. Ren walks up to your side and whispers something. "There... really wasn't anything, right? I don't remember. I didn't pay attention to it until you did your thing."

This... doesn't make any sense. You're tempted to question yourself as well; what if there was a hole in that desk and you just didn't notice until Paul pointed it out?

...

>Keep doing things like this, just go all out. Stand on air, phase through an entire goddamn wall, things that absolutely cannot be questioned.
>Try something more direct. Risk phasing your hand through Paul.
>Bring in Chappy.
>Forget it. Just knowing that he can see ghosts is good enough. Don't bother with him anymore.

"Yeah. Yeah I'm not fucking done yet." You hiss out at him and walk up to one of the walls in the classroom, looking things over and making sure that there aren't any man-shaped holes or hidden doors you haven't paid noticed before. No, you'll go even further than this. Rather than the wall against the hallway, you move to the wall opposite of that. Going through this wall will lead you outside.

You knock at it a few times, get Ren and Naoko to do the same, and then even get your Paul to perform that very same action - something he agrees to do after quite a bit of mentally draining persuasion and while grumbling about his time being wasted.

"So, you got that? This is a solid fuckin' wall. People can't go through solid fucking walls. Right? We're all on the same level here?" You ask, trading glances with everyone present in the room. "You gonna check if the windows are real, and that this wall really does lead outside?"

"Just do your trick already, whatever it is. I have work to do." He continues whining, but you're happy to oblige. You walk into the wall-...

...And the solid structure stops you. No matter how you push, no matter how what method you try, the wall won't let you through.

"Clarissa?" Ren speaks up as she observes your efforts. She sounds worried. You kick at the wall in frustration. Your brother, in the meantime, finally loses his patience and heads for the door.

"I wasted enough time on this. To think that you even convinced your friends to this stupid prank. Maybe you should have practiced more and at least made sure that everything works before trying?" He mutters as he walks away.

"Stop!" You yell at him, and he does stop to glance back at you. "You... you did something to this wall! Fucking look, nevermind that one! I'll just..." You click your tongue and raise a hand. At the gesture, the air ripples and space distorts, summoning black and white soul blades. You then spread your arms, demonstrating the weapons. Paul looks around - his eyes clearly overshoot the span of your half a dozen blades - and he then stares at you, still expecting something.

"You'll just what?" His question drives you up the goddamn wall. He doesn't see them? Yeah, right.

You fling one of the swords at him, handle first, and have it brush a few inches away from his nose. He doesn't flinch. The weapon loudly clangs about somewhere in the corner of the classroom, battering the desks.

"You can't fucking say that you didn't see that! You can see me, right? So it doesn't make any fucking sense that you can't see that!" You shout at him, though he only shows bewildered confusion and a lack of understanding. "Fucking damn it, Paul! Look!"

You phase downwards and sink into the floor, appearing inside the classroom below yours. After your hold yourself in the air, you hop up and back into the room with your brother and friends. Paul is walking away, though. Was he even watching? This time, he doesn't stop after your yelling. Ren has to halt him by tapping his shoulder.

(2/3)
>>
>>41303765
"You didn't miss that, did you? She sunk right through the floor! There aren't any holes there! How can you still not believe your sister after all of that?" Her voice is agitated, clearly fed up with his ludicrous skepticism.

"What are you talking about? Who sunk through what?" He asks. You feel a migraine coming on. Ren points at you; Paul asks if she means Naoko. Your friend loses her temper completely and screams out your name. "Calm down. What are you talking about? There's nobody else here."

"WHAT?" You and Ren yell out simultaneously. The redhead aimlessly stares up at the ceiling and runs a hand through her hair in utter defeat.

"What do you mean there's nobody else here? Your sister is standing right there!" Ren irritably gestures your way again, making Paul turn his head in your direction, but his eyes really do appear to be looking straight through you. He turns back to your friend, measuring her for any hidden motives with a frown.

You're more than fed up with this crap. You wish you didn't care about him enough to keep yourself from chugging a fucking chair at his head, because that'd sure as hell be satisfying no matter which direction it went. Instead, you'll have to do with smacking him upside his schizophrenic skull. Or even do a big suplex like in those wrestling shows in case a punch doesn't turn out to be convincing enough.

"Just what are you trying to pull here?" He continues questioning her as you approach.

"Look, she's walking right up to you!" She warns him, though he doesn't heed that warning whatsoever. Instead, he continues to glare at her with that dumb, self-assured four-eyed look of his, firmly believing that she's trying to trick him in some way or the other, or perhaps that there is some other motive he doesn't understand and that she's clearly not making clear enough for him.

"You need to stop yelling." Paul says, trying to calm down your infuriated friend. That doesn't work on her at all; on the contrary, it makes her face flush red with anger. Seeing his lack of success, your stubborn brother continues. "I don't understand what you're trying to communicate to me here. After all..."

You raise your hand, preparing to slap him right in his overconfident face.

"...NOBODY IS THERE."

You can't bring your hand down. Your head is pierced by an awful pain, as though someone lodged a wooden stake through your skull, splinters and all. Your eyesight wavers, but you are not on the verge of fainting. It's more like the picture is growing distorted, disrupted by static rather than darkness or a lack of clarity.

You can't move even your eyelids; can't get yourself to even blink. Has time stopped? Your brother, the one thing left in your field of vision, is unmoving, just like you.

Your mistake burns itself into your brain as you think it over. After all, this is such a blatant discrepancy.

ONLY PAUL, REN AND NAOKO ARE IN THIS ROOM. They are the only ones who can interact with the objects placed here, as well as with each other.

YOU DON'T EXIST, AND THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T TOUCH ANYTHING.

It simply can't happen. That's why your arm never drops. It simply CAN'T. So you don't touch anything.

That means even your ATTEMPT, even your INTENT OF INTERACTION is illogical and CAN'T EXIST.

You think you hear someone's voice. You're pretty sure that it's Ren's. But that's also impossible. YOU DON'T EXIST, AND THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING.

That must have been just your imagination, then. You CAN'T hear anything. So you don't hear anything anymore.

...No, to begin with, the concept of it is flawed even deeper than that.

You THINK you heard something?

YOU DON'T EXIST, AND THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T
>>
>>41304981
The static abruptly disappears, returning your vision back to normalcy. You find yourself staring up at the ceiling, your back hurting slightly. Looking around the room, you see Naoko standing in front of you; standing right where, at one point, you used to be. She throws you a brief glance to confirm your safety and then turns back towards your brother, her fists raised in a wary stance.

Ren runs up to you and kneels down to your level. "Are you alright, Clarissa? What happened? You suddenly stopped moving, and then you wouldn't answer me!" You nod at her, though you aren't really sure about your current state. She slowly helps you up to your feet.

Your brother remains unmoving, still staring at the spot where Ren once stood.

"I AM here, Paul." You clench your hands into fists, as if to confirm your words for yourself. "I DO exist. Who the hell do you think you are, telling people that they fucking don't?"

You notice that your breathing has grown strained, as though you're tired. Paul remains unmoving for just a little longer. He replies in an unsettling monotone.

"YOU ARE WRONG."

His glasses flicker in the light. A single smooth step, the start of which you've missed because of a blink, carries him towards a desk - that very same desk that you put your arm through at the beginning of this encounter. His fingers grasp at the edge of the hole and then the piece of furniture is lifted and immediately flung with inhuman strength. It flies directly at you, having been thrown from a position from which neither Ren nor Naoko would be in the way.

But the quiet girl's fist batters straight into it, diverting its trajectory. You feel a tinge of surprise as the desk doesn't break under the strength of her hit, as you unfortunately know exactly how strong she is and what it's like to be on the receiving end of her punch.

There is a deafening shriek of smashed glass as the flung furniture crashes straight through a window, sending shards spraying both out of and into the classroom.

(1/2)
>>
>>41305847
You spot something strange with Naoko's fist - the spiritual white glove she uses to attack has partially melted away, baring her knuckles. She realizes it a moment later for herself. "Don't touch anything he throws!" The girl yells at you, getting back into her stance. You realize that Paul's eyes are still locked on you, not the smallest concern for either of your friends.

You bolt backwards, and leap to leave the classroom through the previously broken window. Your brother hops on another desk, and then with one more step, charges. Naoko tries to stop him, but maybe she was too worried for his safety to attack with all of her strength, or maybe she really was too slow to hit him in his dash; her fist brushes his hair and flicks his glasses up into the air. Once again, he's unconcerned.

He gets his foot on the windowsill; one more step, and he jumps after you.

"Watch out, Clarissa!" You hear Naoko exclaim; her sharp eyes spotted the shards of glass clutched between his fingers before you did. Paul can't reach you with his lone jump - especially not after you leap once more, using the air as you foothold.

But you realize that he doesn't need to do that. Those shards must not be meant to stab, but to be thrown.

The air around you ripples once more. The drawn blades are flung at your brother without any delay, their speed akin to arrows shot out of a bow. Not quite their best, you know that for a fact. At your strongest, these blades crush stone and form craters with the force of their impacts alone; the sharpness of them, at that point, becomes secondary at best.

The weapons slam into your sibling's flesh. You don't hear any groans of pain come out of his throat, and you think he only flinches at all only because his body has been pushed back because of the received blows. And yet with a flip, he regains his posture. Operating on nothing but instinct, you jump to the side. Naoko's yell of warning tells you that it was the right thing to do. With the distance between you, you can't make it out clearly anymore, but you think that a couple of fingers on your brother's hand have relaxed, meaning that at least one shard has been flung your way.

Of course, you couldn't see it when it flew at you. The glass is transparent and there isn't even any sunlight that could cause a fortunate reflection; dodging them is going to be a question of nothing but luck. And considering your luck, you really don't think that you'll manage to do it again.

Before Paul gets to throw the next one, his feet touch the ground. His landing is graceful; he dropped from the third floor, but he does not look harmed or inhibited in the slightest. Your eyes widen even more as you observe his next actions - he drops the shards of glass and steps towards the swords you used against him.

In the blink of an eye, Paul's figure zigzags back and forth to pick up the fallen weapons. You realize what he's about to do and try to will them away.

Only one listens to your command and returns to your inner world. The other four Zanpakuto are in his arms.

They are no longer your swords.

"Snap out of it, you ignorant fucking lunatic!" You yell at him as you draw in more blades.

I think Clarissa's pretty and blonde, but that's all I remember. Also when she's using her full power her eyes glow red?
>>
>>41307155
I thiiiink he posted portraits once upon a time? He's not one for reusing them though.
>>

Wow Paul, why you gotta be like that bro?
>>

The young man dashes to the side, his shape blurring with speed. With a motion that you can hardly see, he flings a sword back at you. You avoid it by the skin of your teeth, but the next one was thrown at the place you inevitably ended up in, abusing the brief opening to its full extent.

The weapon cuts hilt-deep into your chest. The sword's blood-stained blade is visible almost in its entirety on the other side.

Your head is no longer occupied by concerns for your brother or even self-preservation - you feel nothing but pain. You cough out blood, and that pulls at the wrong muscles and makes it only worse. Your footing up in the air is lost along with your concentration, forcing you into a fall. You think you spot a black and white glimpse of something blurring at your head, but after a hiss and a clang, nothing pushes into your skull.

You scratch at the air and force yourself to a halt before your pierced back reaches the ground. Mere inches away. Just a little less effort on your part, and the sword would have either bolted you to dirt, or it would have gotten pushed out of your ribcage. You recall the sword's shape; at that moment, you are thankful that it is straight and traditional, rather than curvy and nonsensical. The latter would make pulling it out an absolute torture.

As you slowly regain your wits while kneeling down on the ground in agony, you lift your head. Paul is maybe 20 meters away from you, a single sword still grasped in his hand. He flings it at you; you don't have to even gesture to fire off your blade and knock it out of its intended path. Maybe if you managed to anticipate his actions, you'd be able to do the same for all the previous ones.

In the corner of your eye, you spot Naoko gliding towards your sibling, her white shoed feet about an inch off the ground. Just before she's within a leg's reach from him, the white gloves and footwear fizzle out and disappear, but that doesn't discourage your friend at all - the girl doesn't trip over herself and uses her real shoes to continue the slide, kicking up dirt and dust into the air.

Without her spiritual items, her punch will lack a chunk of its power. But that's not enough. Even her raw, unsupported strength is still unquestionably lethal to human beings. Her fist makes its way into your brother's face; he doesn't even flick his zoned out eyes towards her, but he pays the price for neglecting her presence. The strike connects with the side of his head with an audible smack and a disgusting sounding crunch. Paul's entire weight is tossed back several meters.

You can't quite make out what happened with his face. You don't really want to see. You only hope that he's alive after that.

The man's body lies in the dirt for just a few seconds, but then it twitches and slowly crawls up to its feet. The cracking noise, similar to what you heard at the moment of the brutal contact, lingers for a short while. Your brother's head is in prime condition; as if it's never been hurt in the first place.

So he can regenerate, too? Is it some kind of a twisted logic by which he "denies injuries that couldn't have happened", or something to that extent?

You try to cuss out loud but immediately change your mind, realizing that it won't accomplish anything but make you vomit more blood. And that hurts.

...

>Pull the sword out. Focus on recuperating. Leave it all to Naoko.
>You can still fire swords at him. Just wait for the right moment and try to make an opening for Naoko with a lone, well-placed shot.
>Drown Paul in your weaponry. If he can heal, a few stab wounds won't matter in the long run.
>Other. (Write-in).

Also maybe try grabbing the sword in our chest and forcing it to acknowledge us as its master again?

We can't talk. There's a sword in our chest. What did you think

>You try to cuss out loud but immediately change your mind, realizing that it won't accomplish anything but make you vomit more blood. And that hurts.

Means?
>>
>>41307342
We probably should, yeah. But man, disintegration is one thing, being able to use our stuff even though it's spiritual is just plain cheating right?
>>
>>41307372
That trying to shout loudly would upset our wound and make us vomit blood? We aren't shouting that out if you didn't notice
>>
>>41307398
The phrase "out loud" just means "audibly" volume isn't really a factor.
>>
>>41307436
Whatever, Still voting for it, If it works it works and if it doesn't oh well
>>
Amidst the spectacle, let's all appreciate Naoko showing her best girl qualities as well.

I'd like to end the thread for tonight, hate to cut it short at a moment like this but it's an uncomfortable time where it's too late for me to start writing a new post!

Sorry, everyone! Next thread will be announced on twitter:
https://twitter.com/Mushroomgami
There's a tiny chance for one more thread tomorrow, but it's far more likely that we'll continue next week.

If you have any feedback or questions, shoot them my way!

Thanks for reading!

O-okay

Why is Paul such a shit!?
>>
>>41307616
Yeah! Someone posted it way back during the first thread. I took a bit of a liking to it and have been using it as my personal mental image of Clarissa throughout the quest ever since.

I'm sorry!

He doesn't mean it sometimes. He cares for people in his own way.

That's not Gilgamesh at all. We picked a fight above our weight class. What's taken control of Paul is 「 」.
>>
