What are the derogatory terms used to describe fantasy races? Like "Gooks" or "Niggers." Also, whats the origination of the words?
>>
Knife-ear. Makes sense.

The reason I was asking is because I was thinking to myself why non-fantasy settings are so much easier to roleplay. Then I thought to myself the things that make people seem real. I came across racism as a basic example.

I imagined a character sitting in a car with two mobsters and talking about poker and then one of them says something like "Yeh but then you'd be playin' with Gooks and I ain't havin' that."

Then I said to myself "How would you do that in a fantasy setting?" Would you just say "Yeh but then you'd be playin' with Elves and I ain't havin' that." Or would you use a derogatory term for an elf in the fantasy setting and then add in the players stopping the game to ask what the fuck a "knife ear" is or whatever you decided to use?

TL;DR coming to terms with how I like modern settings more than fantasy ones and it makes me sad
>>
Huh; we haven't had this thread in a while. In a more detailed setting, you could also work in some abbreviated / altered derogatory names based upon historic events,

Trolls: "Ballast". Perhaps "whetstone".

Mermen : "bait" / "fishbait" / "sharkbait".
>>
>>41325414

Nice one. I'll be using this in a campaign I am running that currently features racism against elves. Mostly due to their "cowardice" where they were allied with a human kingdom, and said human kingdom started waging war on gnoll-infested realms, and getting BTFO, so now the human kingdom has basically fucked the gnols to death, and now is pissed at the elves for backing out on the deal, even though it was originally a defensive contract.
>>
Slang for Dwarves overlaps with slang for small dicks.

"Chode", for instance.
>>
>>41325594
>Trolls: "Ballast". Perhaps "whetstone".

I'm too stupid to get this
>>
>>41325696
I was referring to trolls in some fantasy turning to stone when exposed to sunlight, either temporarily for the duration or permanently.

Thus, they could also be called "hengestone" or "cobblestone". One could make a lot of jokes about stone henges and druids, virgin sacrifices etc.

When talking to a merman, make sure to take out a lemon and slice it.
>>
I don't know why but I find it more interesting to come up with slurs that races would use against themselves.
Shortman - A dwarf who does things that are considered un-dwarfish and is therefore no different than a short human.
Cottonheel - A halfling who wears shoes
Watervein/Blueblood - An orc who weakens their bloodline by mating with humans
>>
>>41325889
Trolls might use as insults the names of soft rocks or weak rock types.

eg.

- Sedimentary
- Slate
- Chalk
- Limestone

For a dwarf, some insults and dergoratory names might revolve around the themes of strngth, mining skill, body hair and poverty.

- Some name referring to an impure form of goal, something like "four-carat".
>>

>>
>>41326192

>>
Refer to merpeople as "chum".

If toadpeople are attempting to talk down to each other, they might use the term "tadpole" in a similar way to "nothing personnel... kid".

Refer to elves as tree-huggers and as

- "nature spirit" or
- "dryad"

Trolls deride humans as "bitesize". When encountering dwarves and other smaller races, they sometimes make crudely-worded jokes about dieting and slimming.
>>
>>41326268
Dirt Eaters.
>>
Ask harpies to sing you a pretty song and make remarks about bird-cages.
>>
In no elven language is there any word or words that one elf could use to insult another elf, as it is one of their greatest taboos. There is, however, a mental language that all elves possess which is made up of nothing but insults that elves have created for their fellow elves, with individual thought-curses existing for every moment in history in which one elf has been aware of the presence of another elf. This psychic web of repressed bitterness and narcissism is believed to have been the downfall of many an ancient civilization, who unlocked the power of telepathy only to be killed or driven mad by an eternity worth of resentment flooding into their minds.

Might as well be nigger.

If your elves are the kind with centuries-long lifespans, a particularly cruel but sophisticated slur for a human may be a "moment".
>>
>>41327657

Somebody else mentioned "mayfly" as a slur for humans, which I found pretty amusing.
>>
>>41327672
That's more subtle than my suggestion. I like it.
>>
For humans we had "roaches" for a while?

Why? because numerous, hard to kill, and survive just about anything you can throw at it.
And once there is one, you can bet the rest are going to show up and destroy your habitat.
>>
>>41327672
I quite like this one.
>>
One human-on-halfling slur is an old word, back from when humans had a unique language, that used to mean either child, vermin or thief. Perhaps it was used to mean all three. Kender.
>>
Dwarves use "poor" as an insult whenever they, by their own prosperity or relative prosperity, can.

All of these for Warhammer Fantasy, and written by Liber Fanatica

Aimed at Dwarves -
>Angry Children – Elven insult, likening the Dwarfen grudge-keeping habit to a childish tantrum. The Gods help the elf who uses this in earshot of a Dwarf. Also Stubborn Children, or Childish Ones.
>Beard-biters – a reference to their facial hair. Also beard-breathers, sometimes shortened to just beards or beardies.
>Candle-heads – a reference to mining.
>Helmet-heads – a reference to mining, not battle-helms.
>Mud-suckers – a reference to their underground life. Also what dwarfs call skaven, making the insult worse.
>Sigmar’s little helpers – a reference to Sigmar’s honoured bond with the Dwarfen race
>Stunties – a height reference.
>>
>>41332528

Aimed at Halflings

>Bumpers - because they are often bumped into.
>Knee-pads - a play on footpads, implying that all Halflings are thieves.
>Muckers -because where’s there’s muck there’s halflings.
>Mumpers - origin unknown, probably a corruption of the previous.
>Runties - particularly popular term due to it rhyming with stunties.
>Youngest, The - Elven term for Halflings.
>>
>>41332604

Aimed at Elves
>Points, pointies - due to their pointy ears.
>Stick-boys, leafers - due to their affiliation with the woods.
>Twigs - an allusion to the woodlands and Elves’ thinner physiques.

One of my group always tries to play a warforged whenever possible. I took to using "toaster" as a slur for warforged, even if it is inappropriate for the setting.
>>
>>41332636

Aimed at Humans
>Shorts - Elven expression, short for short-lived ones. Humans often mistake this as an Elven way of mocking Dwarfs or Halflings.
>Sky-heads - Dwarf insult, mocking Humans for living on the surface and being weak-minded. Also sometimes cloud-heads or
moon-heads.
>Slim - Halfling slang for Humans, taken directly from the Ogre word for Human, showing yet again the inexplicable link between Ogres and Halflings.
>Soreheads - used by Dwarfs and Halflings because the tall Humans hit their heads a lot.
>Tainted Ones, The - Elven reference to the Chaos taint on Humanity. Not considered insulting by Elves, but can be inflected that way. Also Cursed Ones, Lost Ones, Wild Ones.
>Tallies - Halfling slang for Humans. They consider it respectful (or as respectful as Halflings get).

Even the act of pretending to be one is on par of enacting a disgusting gyppo-kender heap of shit farce, that will only work to strain your relationship with the other players. Also mad bad karma.

They are in their setting on par with gully dwarves when regarded by other peoples, but even those have redeeming qualities in maintaining a dungeon's ecosystem in an easily affordable way.

Knife ear is the dumbest of the lot.

Knives are positive things, and elves are proud of their ears. Might as well call a dwarf "Rock arms" or a halfling "windfeet" or a gnome "sparklethoughts."

If you called an Elf knifear, they would probably just laugh at you.

One of the many reasons why DA is dumb.
>>
>>41333177
>>
>>41332659
But what could a half-elf be called, since 'mudblood' seems a bit too universal and 'mul(e)' is already a half-dwarf thing?
>>
>>41333177
Stop deflating the matter with your unkeen view on the Kender.
Their whole shtick is being unbearable in civilized company, insistent ignorance and constant fraudulence (lie of omission etc).

Playing one would be as if you're being purposefully a dickass thief to everyone around you, except it's just a racial trait.

And unlike many other racial traits, this dominates your social makeup in all meetings and events that take part with civilized company that isn't quite prepared to cut a Kender's ears off and eat them.
>>
>>41333390

So what? People play thieves all the time. Kender can be thieves without being the dickass part.
>>
>>41333390
Are you implying that you can't roleplay a kinder in a good way? They are just fucking children. Like...4 year old children. That's basically their entire racial fluff.

I mean I can understand not liking children, but wise old people would probably like them a lot. They are basically the kids who go to the candy store and then steal from the shop owner while he watches and then when he calls them out on it and explains why they can't have the candy they pout, but put up with it cause that's just their nature.
>>
If kender should be banned, so should half-orcs.
And drow, Drizztlike or not.
And non-good rogues.
And players that incorporate real-life bilinguality with their character's lingual capabilities, rendering Elven as French, for example.
>>
>>41333574
Okay. Listen. It is entirely possible to roleplay a 4 year old child well.

That does not make them interesting, fun to be around, or even remotely good to have with you on adventures.

Even at their best, in accordance to their racial fluff, Kender are annoying little shits. Yes, it is possible to roleplay one well. That does not make them fun to roleplay with.

This is the stupidest depiction I've yet encountered, and completely inconsistent with how Kender truly are.
They are not a blight on a setting per se, but a blight within a setting.

>>41333497
No, they're in fact not dickass at all. Some genetic bottleneck that split them into retardation must have made their left-brain functionality a nightmarish devoidness of characteristics. Instead they've got a cloying NEED TO TAKE YOUR ITEMS FOR A CLOSER EXAMINATION, AND FORGET ABOUT THE MATTER SOON AFTER.

This is, of course, perfectly justifiable when a Kender in its homogenous enviro. Ownership is fluid, based on time and personal commitment to having something. Your neighbour's cousin might come by the next minute and walk off with it, who knows? Who cares?

But the idiots are also committed to seeing other things than their mud-and-stolen-crap hovels, and are incapable of differentiating their actions from those of truthfully civilized people's, that are not wrought into the shape of curiosity by Flying Magical MacGuffins.

Why are fantasy slurs always descriptive?

Knife-ear, etc?

I mean, we have a few of those in real life (slant-eye, beaner), but they're rare, and I almost never hear the ones we do have actually get used.

Where's the shit like Chink, Nigger, Cholo, Coon, Gook, Gringo?

I mean I can't even find an actual origin for most of these, and the rest require actually knowing a bit about the background of the race involved.

Fantasy slurs always seem to be really low-hanging fruit that writer's thought up in an afternoon at best.
>>
Don't Elves by default refer to non-elves with derogatory terms?
In D&D at least, the elven words when referring ro other races more or less translates to "not people", with added connotations when speaking of specific ones.
>>
>>41333762

Nigger is a corruption of the word "negro," which literally means black. I have no idea about the other ones, but the reason they don't seem descriptive is probably because they originated in other languages.
>>
>>41333762

Well, some of your examples are descriptive; nigger comes from negro, meaning black. Similarly descriptive slurs include slant-eye, towelhead etc.
>>
>>41333762
Because generally fantasy races are portrayals of wildly differing physiques, cultures and histories.

I feel that most derogatives are just derivations from what people were called at some point, for what they did or what they called themselves. Then these have attained further significance as time and relations have developed.
>>
>>41333861
And because fantasy writers don't often invent wholly new languages for the peoples they sometimes half-arse into being. So that's a factor.

When others do make up languages, you can be damn sure they come up with slurs. Except if it's somehow impossible for them to exist for some peoples.
>>
>>41333824
>>41333853
>>41333861
Yeah, but corrupted words and needing to actually research the origins rather than being obvious the first time you hear them was kind of my point. They aren't obvious when you first look at them.

I was hoping someone could find counter-arguments on the fantasy side, since I get a boner for good worldbuilding.
>>
>>41333762
I mean, it'll probably be easier to do that in settings where certain groups are understood to come from a specific location, or are at least assumed to. That's where we get things like Gypsies -- they thought they were Egyptian.
Or we'd need to know the nature of the languages in the universe. Nigger comes from the word 'black', after all, and coon comes from the buildings they were sold in.
At least we could get a vague understanding of the language's construction and style: that's where we get chink.
>>
>>41333236
Tacos are positive.
Taco-bender not onpy doesn't make sense but should be a positive.

But it isn't.
>>
>>41333762
Short, ugly words sound better, it's true. I think a good way of getting these is to shorten the kind of silly sounding descriptive insults. So, change 'knife ear' to 'knear' and you have a much shorter, uglier sounding word you can spit at elves.
>>
>>41325398

I like the sci-fi insult "flatlander".

It's something spacers call people from Earth, or people from planets in general. It'd make sense especially for people who subsist on farming, because they have loads of flat, open space. But I like it because the word itself souns fairly insulting without context. It invokes the idea of someone being a simple bumpkin. I can imagine species like Elves using it to refer to people who eek out a living on subsistence farming.
>>
>>41333762
Those are descriptive, just bastardized, shortened and possibly originated from a different language.

It's also hard to make up a fantasy insult that isn't so eloquently descriptive or goes for the low-hanging fruit. Okay, the slur for elves is now "phlorf". Doesn't make sense, right? Probably requires further explanation, or an entirely new made up language. Knife-ear is easily understandable, and more memorable.

>>41333236
And nigger just means black. Not offensive by itself, but has accrued negative connotations through use. Entirely possible racist fucks have been using "knife ear" to insult elves for centuries and it came to be considered a pejorative.

Also a knife is an instrument of robbers, backstabbers and the like. It could very well have appropriate connotations.
>>
>>41334481
If you're making up a fantasy insult, you might as well use something that's insulting, right? Otherwise, you look like an idiot and your setting takes on a flavor of everyone being mildly retarded.

The adjective-noun thing is a figure of speech called a kenning. It comes from old Norse (vikingy) culture. So it's basically ye olde raciste slure.

Kennings can be very poetic, but a lot of the time I picture some kind of hick that has a small vocabulary. Picture someone who knows what a rat is, and knows what a tree is, but doesn't know the word "squirrel". You can just imagine him saying "shyit suhn, hold m'beer. Ah done sees a tree rat."

We use kennings in racist slurs in real life too. See "sand nigger", "curry nigger" et al.

Man no matter what you guys come up with it will still be terrible. Insulting language carries history with it how many times has being called a fuck been a positive thing in your life. Yeah the real life stuff is corruptions of different languages or based on what a group did(jew immigrants signed a kikkel instead of x ) but in a fantasy setting it carries no weight.

It doesnt matter what you come up with as long as you just use it when appropriate and repeatedly. It may be funny the first time but after a while of shopowners not selling to kehniggits, or insults thrown at them whenever, your players will begin to not like it and associate the word with fuckwads.

No racism in your fantasy settings? what?

Most fantasy settings strike me as the /pol/verse made flesh. Bitter remorseless racial holy war is the norm, and hostile comments about other people's races are the least of your worries (seriously, just try to imagine a party with an elf, orc, dwarf, and human with no racist comments against each other at all).
>>
>>41333801
I think its just Forgotten Realms elves that call non elves not people.
>>
Grit-sucker is an Ankh-Morpork insult for dwarves, there was one for trolls as well, but can't remember what it was.
>>
>>41333762
Nigger IS descriptive, you worthless nigger.
>>
>>41327771
Waaay too much HFY for my tastes
>>
>>41333762
>Chink
Short for Chinese
>coon
Short for raccoon (which is very black)
>gook
From the unintelligible sounds they make "guk guk." Basically an English version of "barbarian" from the onomatopoeia "bar bar"

Also many are physically or culturally descriptive. "Frogs" eat frogs and Fr is the first sound in French
"Nips" is from how Japs say their own name, Nip Nip (now a series of video games)
>>
>>41335484
i say dagger ear, the word dagger just sounds hateful an a dagger is made mainly for STABBIN in the back side if possible
>>
>>41333941
Yeah, but who wants to listen to the GM explain the lengthy route of the dwarven rune for 'tall' into the anti-elven slur "glompygloop"?

More made-up words and lengthy but ultimately pointless exposition is not always a plus.
>>
>>41342562
Unless you're players are completely clueless, you won't have to give them a history lesson to make them find out that something is supposed to be an insult. In fact, not explaining the slur unless it is specifically asked about might make the world seem more real.
>>
>>41333236

Elves = Blade-ears,knife ears,tree huggers, backstabbers

humans = long pigs, short lived ,breeders (because they breed like fucking rabbits),Horse people

Orcs = tusks,greenskins,

trolls = cobbleheads.

Dwarfs = Stone maggots /worm eaters ,angry beards.

drow =cave-scum,spider worshiping scum,cave backstabbers
>>
>>41342679
>Orcs = tusks,greenskins,
The problem I have with calling Orcs tusks, greenskins, brutes, savages etc is I don't think they'd find it offensive.

Honestly I think calling them Goblins would be more offensive, or something weak strength wise.

>>41336343

>Where's the shit like Chink, Nigger, Cholo, Coon, Gook, Gringo?
Did it occur to you that a lot of slurs tend to be quite elaborate, especially among the non-English crowd?

Just look up the Chinese
>Guizi/Gweilo (Foreigners)
Ghost/Demon/Goblin People
>Bei Di
Northern Barbarians
>Nanman
Southern Barbarians
>Dongyi
Eastern Barbarians
>Quanrong/Xirong
Western Barbarians
>Folanqi
From the Arabic "Ferenggi", meaning Franks (i.e. Western Europeans)
>Hongmaofan
Red Haired Barbarian (referring to Indo-Iranian Nomads. Red hair is considered a disgusting trait by the old Chinese.)
>Hongmao or Ang Mo
Red Hairs. Referring to white people in general.
>Gaoli Bangzi
"Korean Bandits." Due to Korean immigrants from the latter Imperial China days being given to banditry
>Woguo
Dwarf Country (referring to Japanese). Even meant pirates later on due to Japanese propensity to piracy in the 1300's-1500's.

Hell, some African country calls black people in the USA/Latin America. "Lost Cats."
>>
Trying to translate mine as best as I can
From dwarves:
>to elves
Woodpeckers.
Lalaliel.
Salads.
Faggot lovers.
>to ents
Faggots
Stumpy
>to humans
Golems
Mud mens
Half salad.
>to orcs
fat gobs
ground face
scourge
>to gobs
greenskin
sqatters
>to drows
coal sellers
dirty salads

That's about all the races in my setting and I'm not playing a non-dwarf
>>
Baggers for halflings.

Both for the similarity to Baggins for a Hobbit nod, and for the implication of them being thieves.
>>
>>41342365
Loada Rock or any name implying stupidity
>>
>>41325563
Try playing with a group of snarky players, and have them play an elf, a dwarf, a halfling and an orc. You'll have 50 pages of race-related taunts in no time ("treehugger", "greenskin", "half-man", "dumbrock", etc...)

Or, you can go and seek how all of the racist names appeared. For example, nigger comes from "negro", which means "black" in spanish. So a good way to find how to produce fantastic slur is to find one of their characteristics (e.g: the green skin color of the orcs), translate it into another langage (e.g: in French, "green" is written "vert"), and adapt ("shut up, vero").

Of course, this last option will sound silly, since it's basically rootless.
>>
>>41343159
more like verdo, vero doesn't feel rooted by vert at all
>>
>>41325594
>>41325851
>>41326046
On that same theme, maybe call a troll a pulver. From pulverize, the thing you do to rock to turn it to dust. Might be a good dwarf-to-troll insult.
>>
>>41333236
I think "knife ear" is clumsy, but the origin of many racial slurs isn't something bad. Consider nigger:

>The word originated as a neutral term referring to people with black skin, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger ("black").

Anyway, maybe you could start with knife ear and modify the word from there. Knife ear to knifer to niffer. Fucking, niffers. Or maybe nivers, Personally, I'm gonna stick with "tree fuckers" or "stump lickers".
>>
In my setting, elves have a fair few for humans. Humans are relatively coastal and rely on the ocean and rivers for trade and food much like the real world. Of course they're are farmers and shit but the stereotype is shipwrights and fishermen. Elves are spindly, ghostly pale, and with big eyes

>Humans
Shitskin
Dogfuckers
Salters

>Elves
Ghouls
Whitedicks
>>
>>41327004
>>41327160
Say what you will about FATAL, but poople is fucking great. Though I thought that somebody in a previous thread was saying that was the term some sort of big burly humanoid (orc or ogre or something like that) used for "people", in other words: humans. I like it better like that.
>>
>>41342776
Just a reminder that nigger pretty much just means black. You use any term disparagingly for long enough and it becomes charged, if for no other reason than the person saying it is trying to insult you and using a a disparaging tone.
>>
>>41342886
I don't understand "Dwarf country".

Was there a significant height difference between them and the Japanese at that time, due to nutrient intake or genetics or whatever?

Or was this just a Chinese mythology that there were mythological dwarves in Japan?
>>
>>41343548
>Knife ear to knifer to niffer.
>Fucking, niffers.
Niffa please!
>>
Around elves watch yourselves

Around orcs, send em to the morgue

Around dwarves:
Guard your stores
Watch the hoard
Prepare for war
Settle a score

>>41333762
Perhaps these are what the insults start as, until after so much use they become slurred.
>>
I just called all elves slaves. Just like
"Hey slave, where's your collar?" type thing, pissed a lot of elf players off.
>>
in tolkien's world, the sindar refer to dwarves as naugrim, or stunted people. basically calling them shorties
>>
>>41350474
I think it's more of you just acting like an idiot, rather than any particular insult.
>>
>>41351944
Yeah it was, my character then was a particular piece of work but it did have the desired effect of pissing off the elves!
>>
>>41351071
Sindarin elves are dicks anyway. Oh look at us, our queen is a literal angel and we have the tallest elf ever as king and their daughter was so beautiful she sent a human heir of kings on a quest to retrieve a Silmaril which he only succeeded at thanks to her direct intervention. The real Mary Sues of the elf tribes.

And Finrod killing a werewolf with his bare teeth too. Just in case we forgot that doing something amazing and dying was a thing Noldor did.
>>
>>41326046
>Yo i ain't letting my kid play with no sedimentary
>>
>not calling elves fairies
>not calling dwarves stonesuckers
>not just calling halflings goatfuckers
>not calling orcs savages

If it doesn't feel natural, it ain't right.

I could see calling dwarves "stunts" or "stunties," just not if I didn't want to get in a brawl immediately afterwards.

In dwarven cultures where the beard is important (say, like in WHF), terms insulting a dwarf's beard are probably pretty rude. I remember someone using 'scrote-beard' on a dwarf NPC in a game once.
>>
Some may be obtuse, long, clever, short, funny, etc. Just like in real life.

>Dwarfs
Stunties
Diggers
Beardies
Squats
Scrote-Beard
Stone-sucker
Dirt-fucker
Worm-eater
Mini-Kiddy

>Elves
Knife-Ears
Woodpecker

Pointies
Leafers
Birdy
Sprite

>Humans
Roundies
Walkers
Locusts
Roachers
Humies

>Halflings

Baggers
Plumpies

And of course all manner of corruptions, deviations, and variations. And this doesn't even begin to cover the stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination.

My favorite bit from this is the line "Even the threat of imminent demise does not deter Kender..."

That's right, you can't even threaten to murder the little bastards to keep them off your shit. Hell, handing one a box and telling one straight up "I will kill you the moment you open this box" will apparently results in them opening it, according to the blurb.

And the whole species is like this! Absolutely retarded.

DWARVES ARE NOW CALLED DIGGERS
>>
>>41325398

In one of our games there was a masd exodus of Dwarves from the mountains. We called it the plauge of beards and decided that it was probably not a good idea to say that in front of a dwarf.
>>
>>41343652
i wish to remind all of you that nigger comes from the country niger where a big part of slaves to america came, and since all slaves came where black everyone thought the came from niger so everyone called the niger, then the word corrupted and we got nigger
>>
>>41333177
>>41332888

Kender CAN be fun, but generally they piss off the rest of the party. Nothing will earn you the ire of your party quicker than playing a kender as described the books, constantly stealing from and annoying NPCs, more or less ruining the parties diplomatic reputation. That alone can destroy a player who wants to play a high CHA character.

Of course, a kender player can easily get the party wiped if, again, he or she follows the books and investigates and plays with EVERYTHING with no thought for safety.

Playing with a Kender in your party is basically a non consensual difficulty modifier for everyone.

Gringo comes from a misinterpretation of the lyrics from a song Mexicans would hear Americans singing. They heard Gringo and not "green grows (the grass)" in their song.

Yes, they should be banned as well. The justification for half-orcs being playable makes no fucking sense in any setting where all orcs are evil.
