Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain power, zany antics, and wings.

Except you’ve run into an unexpected delay. Heading up a remote road on the Pacific coast, you made a pit stop in the quaint country town of Porthcawl, only to find you apparently made a dangerous detour... into the Twilight Zone.

--

Car’s gone, along with Xan, Mori, and Vik. Sky’s dark, when a second ago it was just afternoon.

A gust of sea wind rustles through the forest, swishing up leaves in great, gentle waves.

Take a deep breath. Everything’s going to be a-okay. You probably just need to kill some stuff.

You hear something rustling in the bushes to the side, just out of sight around the corner of the gas station.

Ro draws her sword, gripping it in hand, while you drop into a low crouch and ready your claws.
>>
>>41357111

A big red thing bursts out at you, and almost floors you when he pops up on his hind legs and sets his paws on your shoulders so he can lick your face.

“Gross,” Ro says, making a face.

You ward off the hound’s slobbery mouth with your shadow and give him a brief hug. “Reebs!” you say, smiling. Then you make him get off. You don’t need his claws ruining another one of your shirts. You go through enough clothes as is.

Rowan lowers her sword, but she remains on guard. “We need to get back to the road,” she says. “Mermenes are less powerful away from their domains.”

Ro is definitely the one with more experience dealing with fish people. But what about the old lady looking one in the store? A glance behind you shows the storefront darkened and empty.

Summon Monster the imp and use him to get a bird's eye view of the town layout and map out heat signatures. And maybe give Stepping of the Mind a test run.

“In hindsight, I should have made everybody donate blood so I could track them down,” you observe.

“Would have helped,” says Ro.

You produce your little glass phial and hand it to her. “Gimme,” you direct. “I’m not taking another step in weird mysterious forest place without Ro-tracker 2015 up to date.”

Ro rolls her eyes, slips a big bowie knife out of her boot, and gives herself a nick on the arm, leaning on Aleopher while she does so. The wholesome wrath of demonbane blood sneaks into the air as she finagles a drop into the container and stoppers it for you, handing it back and saying, “You want to get Flash updated too while you’re at it?”

“Nah, I’m cool.” You store the phial back in your pocket, and watch curiously while Ro gets her massive knife back into its hiding place, glancing at her huge sword. “Why didn’t you just... oh right. Myagic sword,” you say, snapping and pointing at the myagic sword in question.

Ro hefts the sword over one shoulder. “Maybe Reeber can track the others down for us? He’s been out here who knows how long.”

You give Reeber more of your attention. He smells strongly of fish guts, and you spot brackish stains on his leathery hide. “Giving the locals some love, huh?” you ask.

Reeber barks.

You snort. “We can’t just walk out of here, not even with Reeber on the head,” you say. “If I were a weird fish person, I’d have some crazy nefarious maze planned for people who tried to walk out.”

“Be serious,” says Ro. “There’s only like a thirty percent chance we wind up back here after walking five minutes back up the road.”

“Forget that,” you say, whipping out your cell. “I’m calling Mori.” You select her name off a kind of embarrassingly short list and let it ring.

Ro sighs impatiently. “That’s not going to work.”

“Hey, I got one bar,” you say. Although you’re not sure where they the cell tower around here. Whatever.

Moriah picks up. “Sierra, where are you?” She sounds haggard and tense.
>>
>>41358196

Rowan shrugs wildly, unable to summon any surprise. “Wow. Just wow.”

“Still at the gas station,” you say into the phone, briefly sticking your tongue out at Ro. “You guys dead or what?”

“You went in, and then a dozen –“ a crack of static breaks the call. “-came crawling out. The car wouldn’t start.”

You frown. “What came crawling out?”

“They were – “ More static chokes out Moriah’s voice.

Rowan makes a hurry up motion. “They’re wising up to the call,” she says. “Ask her where she is!”

You feel a sudden sense of urgency. “Where are you?”

“We’re in a paper mill, I think,” she says. “Vikrama’s here. We locked ourselves in a storage closet.”

“What about Xan?”

“She went into a blood rage at the gas station and ran off into the woods,” says Moriah.
>>
>>41358214

“Well that’s useful,” you say, shaking your head. “Do the fish things know where you are?”

There’s a pause. “There’s a crowd of them waiting outside.” She goes on to say something else, but static gets in the way.

You feel a plunging, icy sensation. “How much time do you have?”

There’s another pause. “We’re not really in trouble,” she says. “The Mermenes that do wander in die, so they’re keeping their distance. They understand that much, at least. I don’t want to kill everything, but my options are - ”

The call goes dead. You check your phone. Zero bars. “Stupid Sprint,” you say.

“Paper mill,” says Rowan, searching the tree line.

>We need to find Xan. She’s by herself, and that’s bad news for horror situations. Although I’m not really convinced of the horror of this situation. Still need to find her.
>Mori said the car didn’t start. Car’s not here. We need to find it or the road trip’s as good as canceled.
>Let’s go get Vik and Moriah, I guess. You want to scout or should I send Monster to do the bird’s eye thing?
>What should we do? You know more about fishing than I ever want to know.

Between us and Reeber we should be able to smell out a trail.

I think we can leave Xan alone for a bit. She can take care of herself, she's an apex predator in the woods. And I'm more worried about Vik and Mor.

“They’re not in over their heads yet,” you say. “Xan’s the one by herself. We need to find her before horror movie rules take over.”

“They’re surrounded by Mermenes. That’s trouble,” says Ro.

“I’ll send some backup, we’ll track down Xan, and we’ll all meet up and happy ending,” you say. You magic up Monster and Tiger. One nice thing about being a landwell-ionaire is that you can summon lots of things without breaking a sweat.

Monster perches on your claws and puffs out a bit of fire into Tiger’s angular, boney face. “Why do I always have to do everything?” the bat-lizard squawks in complaint, launching into the air on his leathern wings.

Tiger makes a gruff, grating sound, and lopes off in pursuit.

Rowan looks disturbed. “Since when did your imp start back talking?”

“Since he started talking, basically,” you say, somewhat thoughtful. But there is business to take care of, business which involves tracking Xan. “Let’s go find us a missing demon.”

You go to where the car was. Fortunately, or unfortunately, Xan is actually not too hard to track, given the distinct scent of sickness that’s been with her ever since she started heaving up her lunch up off the sides of the winding road. Reeber smells it too, and you move off, staying close to Ro, never quite out of sight.

The trail takes you away from the decrepit town and into the woods on a trail growing increasingly more blood-ridden. You pass by mangled, inhuman bodies, bloated where their blood’s been ripped out from their hearts or internal organs, or gashed open by lines of sharp claws. A few even have gills, scales, or obvious fins. They’re pretty hideous. Like. Even random mutated Stygians seem to have more going on for them than these guys. At least they’re kind of cool. Mermenes are just kind of trashy.

You feel more than see the live Mermenes ahead of you through the mist – it’s a hidden tenseness. Reeber gets it too.

“They’re close,” says Ro.
>>
>>41359266

“So is Xan,” you say.

You all creep forward until you’re peering out from a tree, down a steep slope to a watery pond alongside a little brook. Maybe a dozen Mermenes, some human-esque, others alien and fishy, mill about muttering strange words amongst themselves. Their speech is comprehensible, but deprived of thought.

“—the spawn of the dragon,” one stammers loudly, a throaty gurgle to its words.

“Great weather we’re having to day,” another says, this one looking perfectly human in a threadbare jacket and jeans.

Another crouches down by a bucket full of fish pieces and tree bark and eats half of a raw fish. “The waker awakes. The waker awakes.”

Reeber lets out a throaty growl, belly close to the earth.

Ro grimaces at the sight. “They’re excited about something. Us, maybe.”

Your danger ring is clearly not buzzing.

You hate to keep Xan waiting, but you see here an opportunity. “Why don’t we drop down and chat?” you say. “If there’s some secret to escaping, one of these freaks probably knows.”

“True,” says Ro. “If any of them start being exceptionally weird, though, assume they’re trying to kill you. Or worse. Let’s do it.”

You both step over the ledge and skim down into the little clearing, and step forward till you’re at the edge of the group. None of the milling half-breeded things take much heed of you until one twists around and goes still. All the Mermenes go still along with him and stare straight at you, completely ignoring Rowan and Reeber.

“Behold the mark of the dragon,” says the droopy, scaly one obsessed with dragons.

Another smiles broadly at you. “Just smell that fresh ocean breeze,” he says.

“The mark of the dragon,” another says, staring unblinkingly at you with eyes three sizes too large for its head.

Their eyes seem to bulge out of their slightly uneven eyes. “Murky greens and pains of the dragon’s spawn.”

You feel a mixed sense of disgust and fascination from all of them. One in the back burns with soul-wrenching terror, though he seems compelled by fish-mentality to stay with the school and avoid fleeing for his life.

You decide that they’re all sheep except for the smart one in the back. It’s him you need to talk to – you doubt death or the threat thereof would convince the others to tell you anything in plain terms. But calling him out in the crowd’s probably dangerous – they’d probably tear him apart if they realized he cared more about life than babbling incoherently.

You shift your posture, following your instincts and hiding your tension and looking more aloof. Uncaring. “The dragon seeks supplication,” you say, the words almost coming to mind of their own accord. But you feel it’s what needs to be said if you’re to get the smart one out from their number.

Ro’s eyes widen. “Ixsnay on the agonsdray,” she whispers to you.

You ignore her, keeping your eyes unfocused on anything in particular. To talk to fish, one must become fish. You suddeny stare unblinkingly at the one in the back. “The dragon seeks an offering.”

The Mermenes finally break ranks, beginning to turn one by one and look at your target.

“The marked one marks another,” says one.

“Beautiful, grade-A breeze, you’ve got to visit the beach down here,” says another, watching the one you’ve singled out.

You feel your prey spark with horror, and his skin turns a waxy pale green. Well, a more pale and more waxy green, anyway. “M-my lord is not that lord,” he stutters, stepping back from the mob.

A webbed hand latches onto his arm. “This one is green. Green for green,” one of the Mermenes reasons.

“To the dragon,” they all concur, beginning to chant. “To the dragon.”

Acting as one body, the mob descend on the terrorized Mermene, gripping him and hauling him forward, kicking, pounding, and biting him. One tears at his shirt. Another kicks him in the back of the knee. But he never gets too much abuse from any one, as they convey him forward with inexpressible diligence.

The exile is hurled at your feet.
>>
>>41360833

The fish-man sobs before you on his knees, bleeding red from some sounds, black from others. His patchy hair seems to be on the verge of falling out, and the strangeness of his wrinkled skin and rumpled clothing make it impossible for you to guess his age.

The rest of the mob returns to its previous milling about, having totally forgotten their prior frenzy.

“Up you go,” Rowan says, hauling the Mermene up by an arm.

You evacuate the premises to avoid having the mob turn on you next.

“That was the strangest thing I’ve ever seen,” Rowan says, impressed and bewildered. “How’d you know what to say?”

“Eh. I just winged it,” you reply.

Once you’re in relative safety, Rowan lets go of the froggish guy.

“I am a corpse,” the Mermene mutters, collapsing to the ground as if dead. Except he’s definitely not a corpse. He’s just staring off into the misty distance and not moving a muscle. You feel abject devastation in place of the terror from earlier. Guy’s had a tough day, you guess.

Either way, wouldn’t be too difficult at this point to make this guy tell you anything you want. He’s already defeated.

“All right guy. You have some explaining to do before I let you wallow in abject self-loathing,” you say.

“To the dragon,” the Mermene mutters, over and over.

Curious, Reeber pads over and sniffs him. He regrets it, and backs away, rubbing at his nose.

“First question,” you say. “Where’s our car?”

“Take the cars to the sea. Take them all to the sea,” he says, words tumbling out of his mouth.

Rowan takes a second to listen. “They must park them by the beach. You can hear the waves, it can’t be far away.”

One down. “Next question. Why the hell are you fish-faces messing with us?”

“The blood flowed into mud. The lord didn’t ask for their blood, he didn’t ask for it.”

Rowan scowls and shoves a boot into the guy’s back, grinding him into the earth. “He asked for it the second he sent you against people,” she says. “I know your lord. You serve the Golden Serpent.”

“The waker awakes,” he blubbers, nearly incoherent.

While Ro’s grilling the fish for info, you check in with Monster.

“Check out the triumph of the bastards, Sie,” says Monster in your head. He’s perched on a tree before a huge industrial building, long abandoned. The paper mill. He cackles in flames as Tiger tears through a crowd of anemic Mermenes barring the entrance into a warehouse. “Go get ‘em Tiger! Hahh ahhaha!”

It’s like a little piece of you is at the paper mill, raising hell in your place. It’s beautiful.

“He’s used up,” says Rowan, scowling at the frog man with disgust. “Car’s that way – we can pick Xan up and get there.”

“Monster’s at the paper mill,” you say, angling a hand toward the place. “It’s a straight shot.”

“Good. Let’s get the car, pick them up, and get the hell away from this place,” says Rowan.

“Let’s grab Xan and go,” you say. You look to Reeber and let out a sharp whistle. “Show us where Xanissil is, Reebs.”

Reeber darts off at a dead run – you and Rowan follow.

“What's their major malfunction?” you ask, feeling light on your feet. It really gets your blood pumping when things are trying to kill you. “I mean, do they know who we are or is this just their version of going out to the movies?”

“They’re trying to win favor with the deep ones,” says Rowan, voice tight as she jogs alongside you. “Unholy power is the easiest to gather in bulk for tribute, so that’s what they almost always go after. The exact methods vary from group to group, but they’re always bad.”

“Should we burn this place to ashes? Save dad the effort?”

“We’ll flag it for later,” says Rowan. “Mermenes are a problem when they’re closer to a populated area. This is the boondocks and we don’t have the manpower for a purge anyway.” Her eyes flick forward. “Watch it!”

Ahead of you, an enterprising Mermene runs out from a group of trees with a shotgun. Unfortunately for him, Reeber tears around his flank unseen, curving around a tree and charging horns first into the amphibian’s chest. The hellhound tears out the creature’s whole neck before it manages to do anything more than gurgle pathetically. Good boy.
>>
>>41362354

About a minute of jogging later, you come upon Xanissil, who’s standing with her hands on her legs, bowed over and panting heavily, her hair awry and her face and claws dripping with thick, dark blood. Her beret is missing, as are her shoes, and her clothes are tattered. Smoke curls off from her, boiling the blood off the crimson skin of the back of her neck.

An exhausted, frenzied feeling glows from her, like the heat from the embers of a fire freshly burnt out.

Reeber pops up and barks.

Xan is too tired to make an intelligible reply. “Ugh,” she says, trying to ward him away with a hand.

“How many of them did she kill?” Ro asks in bewilderment.

>Yo Xan, we’re ditching this hellhole. C’mon.

“Don’t know, lost count on the way in,” you reply.

“Is it... okay to approach?” Ro asks.

You snort. “Believe me, after one of those, it’s all you can do to not just lie down and die,” you say.

Reeber doesn’t have such qualms, and steps up to Xan’s side so he can lick at her fingers.

You walk up to Xan and lean on her tree. “Still feeling carsick? We got just the thing.” You take her bloody hand and slap a bottle Dramamine into it.

Xan lets out a single protracted sound. “Hah.”

You snort. “I give you a solid A on the badass scale. Would have been A+ material, but you lose points for losing your beret.”

Feebly, Xan runs a stained claw through her hair, as if hoping to find her hat still in place anyway. She gives a tired scowl at its absence. “Yeck.”

“We have to go,” Rowan says, anxiously looking behind you.
“C’mon Xan, gotta book it,” you say, slugging her lightly in the shoulder.

She groans in annoyance, but leaves her tree.

“Keep up the pace,” says Ro, setting off in the lead with Reeber.

It’s not much of a run to the beach, but Xan’s at the end of her rope. Even she’s not having a fun time running after her episode of murderous rage.

Not quite on the beach, but amongst the trees far back from the rocky shoreline covered in tidal sea creatures, there’s a long line of cars. Each one is parked in a neat line. In total, the line’s maybe forty, fifty cars long. Some of the vehicles have seen the weather of years, and sport faded paint, broken windows, and mossy outgrowths.
>>
>>41363146

One is brand new. Your SUV rental. You hope they didn’t scratch it or anything stupid like that.

But as you near the beginning of the car line, you notice some odd movement from the beach, and turn to look. You kind of wish you didn’t.

From the midsts of the tidal pools along the shoreline, things you thought were rocks are now moving inland, toward you and the cars. Barnacle encrusted and bleached by sun, a wave of... things.... scurry across the rocky beach. Some are small – just regular crabs. Some are not so small. Five-foot lobsters with stony shells. Writhing things resembling cuttlefish with leathery hides and propping suckers struggling inland with deceiving speed. Things that definitely shouldn’t exist on your planet. (-1 Sanity: 92)

The sun sets behind the wave, reflecting orange off the surf. It’s as if the ocean decided to expand its territory. One look behind you at Xan lets you know that there’s going to be a problem here. She’s too slow. Why is somebody always too slow?

>Ro! We have a problem here!
>Move up onto the beach an advance guard and clog the path of the creatures’ advance.
>Form up on Xan and phalanx your way to the SUV.

> Great Old Ones

Well, I was curious to see how you would deal with the massive power increases we've been getting.

Should be interesting to see how we fuck up trying to shoot Dagon in the face. Or is it Cthulhu?

Anyways, you can damn well bet that I'm going to stay up for wednesday so that we can chew Xan out for fucking up by going on a bloodrage instead of protecting the car, not only losing us our transportation but resulting in her losing our other friends, requiring us to go find her, and making her completely useless when we did find her.

What a complete fuck-up that was. We can take some of the sting out I guess by mentioning that she'll have to work on that with us since we've also had some problems with losing control in the past, and then hammer in the fear by saying that we'll definitely get Ranthix to help her with that as well as us.
>>
>>41364525
Let's wait until we conquer hell before dealing with powers that view our world as less than a speck of dust floating along the river if existence.
>>
>>41364525
We're nowhere near "punch Dagon in the face" levels. We're somewhere around "murder fish cultists and fuck off" levels. I'm always surprised when people start talking about how Sierra's getting ridiculously powerful.

Damage-wise, she's not much better than some dude with a flamethrower, a knife, and a couple rifles. The only things she really has over regular people are the VE spatial warping stuff and the BE psionics, neither of which are really good enough to fight Cthulhu.
>>
ok, we're preparing to assault the military base we know nothing about, time to pick your weapon!

pros: ranged, silenced
cons: unreliable, short range

>assałt rifle
Pros: long range, powerful, scary
cons: loud as fuck, you gonna get found the second you fire this bitch

>tactical dildo luncher
pros: intimidating like nothing else
cons: not actually a weapon

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE, SO CHOOSE WISELY

We would get destroyed by satt or isacc or hell Meckor would still wreck our shit. Ranthix could 1v1 us easy. Ro would have a good shot.

>>41364754
Indeed, we cannot! Cannot progress, because the guard at the door is a robot! Surely if we try to fist it, we'll just break our knuckles, and since it's not biological it will not be phased by the dildo launcher. A truly formiddable foe we didnt account for!

We can:

>try to trick it openly
>sneak around it
>go brute-force on his ass and hope he puts us out of misery real fast
>cause a distaction
>>
>>41364754
Yea. What we really lack is

A. Bruiser like tankyness to sustain lots of constant damage.

and

B. High damage spells to just blow shit up

Our basic mage skills are a bit behind but are progressing. We still need some sort of magical shields/defenses to protect from things that we really don't want hitting us (ie: things like death and corruption energy, serious poisons, etc)
>>
>>41364790
The IN tree has physical buffs for Sierra's meat body to make her resist that shit better and the VE tree has shadow armor and shadow body improvements that make it harder for that stuff to get to the meat body. It'll probably happen eventually, but I can't imagine Sierra getting as tanky as a pure highblood infernus line that focuses on tankiness more than blood stuff and fire.

We'd be better off figuring out how to enchanting and making some more items that help not die, like Meckor's OP armor.

BRUTE FORE IT IS THEN, we get a drop on the robotas it minds its own business, and we start pummeling him our hand going bloodier ad bloodier by the punch. By the time we're done with him, our hands anre but a pair of bloodied stumps. We can still use delciate tech, but it will take time now. The robot however... Turns out to have been lost and wasn't guarding the base at all! He apologizes for the inconvenience and says he'll make up for it by toting around the dildo launcher for us.

Do we accept his apology? Do we even TRUST him with our dildos?
>>

NAH WE DON'T
>>
>>41364822
Of course. But between landwells and Seirras magical puberty I don't see her development stopping anytime soon. In the end (somewhere far down the line when we're a true terror like mom was) we'll probably end up being able to go toe to toe with things on their home turf like ranthix and the like. But for now I suggest some enchanted armor (fullbody and self crafted) with a bunch of goodies to fit us more than our pure angel stuff we got right now. Not to say we couldn't have Harvey add some angel shit to it, just some things that synergize with our shadows and fire might be nice.

That and exploring magic in general more. Landmaster stuff, other magic trees, you know, see what's out there.
