Misarchived Thread #45: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/40433302/

You are Anthony Grant, a level 60 Cleric, captain of the Manifest Destiny, inventor of the land-ship and the air-ship, and newly an expert on the Man in Black.

Inside your personal room on the Manifest Destiny, growing out of the wooden floor stands a tooth.

Flashbacks to the Big Red One play in your mind. When the BRO exploded at the gates of King Auberon a pillar of teeth and gums were the only thing that remained. It looked like the whatever it was had been growing in the boiler the entire time.

You also remember that old man that had given you the map. When you finally found him to pay him back, his entire body had been converted to the mass of teeth, like some kind of teeth golem, or maybe a tooth elemental.

Then there was that dragon that your brother told you about. There was some dragon that burst into teeth in the Frontier.

You start putting your equipment back on. Sleep will need to wait.

[ ] Evacuate the ship.
[ ] Try to find the source of the tooth.
[ ] Set the ship on fire. It's the only way to be sure.
[ ] Other.

So, Tiny gave a hint because he was running later than usual in the week:

>What was missing from the dragon's death?

I'm assuming he is alluding to the dragon that our bro squared off against while he was crossing the Frontier.
>>
>>41376074

For the record:

>Skin and scale are punctuated by a million tiny white bits, which look like bone, or maybe teeth? The dragon cries out and thrashes until it goes still. The white bits multiply and soon they are all that is left of the creature. Then the form collapses into a pile. A pile of pristine teeth. You are left baffled, confused, and a bit scared.

My first guess is that there weren't any sparkles to indicate lootability. But then again, Vertigo never touched it.
>>
>>41376455
>Vertigo never touched it
Maybe that's what's missing. What if the toothification is caused by interaction with adventurers
>>
>>41376455
Maybe gums? I'd need to check if there was mention of gums with the teeth golem.
>>
>>41376625

I dunno, NPC deaths can also be scripted.

Maybe it was the fact that he didn't get any exp despite it being high enough to actually give some?

Once your armor is fully donned, you do the only logical thing and attempt to find the source of this tooth.

It is growing out of a floorboard, so the first place to investigate is underneath the floorboards. You don't really have a tool to help you dig up the planks, so you do the next best thing.

Your mace cracks the wood in one swing.

Another swing snaps the board in two.

You pull away the two pieces, but something is sticking it in place, like some kind of rubber is pulling the pieces back into place.

You add more strength into the equation and rip the boards away. Pink, gum-like flesh fills the spot where the board had been. You do not let this deter you and stab the flesh with your mace to try and force it out of the way.

After a couple of thrusts, the flesh moves out of your way.

You see teeth sticking out from underneath the boards you currently stand on, but the bottom of the space, which is the ceiling of the floor bellow, appears to be clean of the infestation.

You are unnerved, but you need to know more. If they are stuck to the underside of the floor, but not above the roof, then it most logically started on this floor, right? Or perhaps that's just what it wants you to think.
>>
>>41377124
You head down to the kitchen. Takeshi, Judicature, and Lilac all appear to be having a conversation that you'd don't care for right now.

You get upon the donated table and start breaking the ceiling.

“What are you doing!?” Lilac cries.

“Investigating.” You respond.

Wooden boards break and fall all around you.

Then you see it.

Flesh writhes around the floorboards of the floor above you. The gum-like material spreads itself at a snail's pace and produce teeth as it moves along.

“What is that?” Judicature asks.

“I have no fucking idea.” You answer.

You start ripping up more of the ceiling. Lilac, Judi, and Takeshi all start helping you soon enough, and before you know it, the entire ceiling has been destroyed.

You gaze up and the undulating mass and notice something. The center of the mass has a rectangle missing from it. Actually, that rectangle must have been the one you made when you struck the thing.

This thing most likely originated from your room.

But how?

[ ] Get everyone to evacuate.
[ ] Hit the mass until it goes away.
[ ] Light everything on fire.
[ ] Other.

So I had a look in the archives, and:

>“Nothing! He just fell into a pile of teeth … after I threw some gold at him.”
>“WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!?”
>“It seemed like a good idea at the time!”
This was about the man with the map. What's the opposite of gold?

As for the dragon, I don't remember there being loot. I don't know if Elder Tale shows a lifebar or monster name, and Vertigo didn't emphasize whether he saw one or not.
>>
>>41377142

I'll also second investigating this mysterious toothy mass.
>>
Wait, is this some reverse toothfairy thing. Throw gold and get teeth?
>>
>>41377289

Well, lead might be considered the opposite of gold. There's all sorts of stuff about alchemists trying to convert worthless or common substances into gold, and lead is the one that pops up the most.
>>
>>41377418
An interesting proposition. I also want to try something incredibly chemically reactive, like an alkali metal or fluorine gas.

[+1 ?????? ?? ? ???]
>>
When the dragon died there were no bubbles floating away indicating death, no separation of essence and soul.
>>
>>41377558

No loot popped out of it either.

So it might have been transferred somewhere or stuff, or it was some kind of simulacrum made of teeth.
>>
>>41377418
These teeth are responsible for every atrocity committed against the adventurer race! We need to make an example of them! Gently remove them(with protective clothes ofc) put them in camps, feed them and house them at our expense. Then, when they think they are safe, bring them to the showers and pour sulfuric acid on them while burning the gums in the ovens!

Gas the geniuses! Empathion war now!
>>
>>41377558
So Essence and Soul in duality creates living creatures, but in fusion creates....teeth?

Or is the tooth infection a cancer that consumes essence and soul to integrate into itself?
>>
>>41377606
Wait, guys what if the teeth are the loot popping out?
>>
>>41377649
then gold turns into teeth. Which confusingly, is relatively not horrific in this context.
>>
>>41377636
Could teeth be a byproduct of Empathium?
>>
It's probably not a good idea to leave a kid and Canis's GF in the middle of a lovecraftian flesh golem that we're probably antagonizing.

Hey Shep, is there a pastebin with our inventory or anything?

You need to trap this thing somehow.

You look to your chef. “Takeshi, get something to trap this thing in. I'm going to knock it down.”

“W-what!? I don't-”

“Just think of something, Takeshi!” You shout before running up stairs.

You start knocking out the floor all over the ship; it reminds you of the time that you started ripping out the deck of the BRO to make it go faster.

With each board broken, more of the thing is revealed. Veins cover the thing, pulsating with the writhing mass.

“Are you ready, Takeshi?” You call out.

“I guess?” You hear the Assassin below.

You crack the last four boards and the thing goes falling to the floor bellow.

You gaze down at the monster and see Takeshi running around with a pot lid and spatula trying to force the monster to squeeze into an open pot.

You cannot seem to decide if this is stupid or not.

You hear a door open. A groggy Auberon emerges from Canis' room. “Do you not know not to inerrupt the sleep of a king?”

You stare at the child for a moment. “You should probably go back to sleep.”

“I would if you would stop making so much noise!”

“Well, I'll be sure to do that AS SOON AS THE SHIP STOPS BEING EATEN BY TEETH MONSTERS!”

The child is perplexed.

You point down.

It appears he only just now realizes what had transpired in his sleep. Spotting the undulating mass, the boy takes a step back and slams the door shut.

You let out a sigh of relief. If he had taken one step forward he could have falling to the pot with the monster, and then who knows what would have happened?

You'd rather not be responsible for the death of a Lander child.

You head down to the kitchen just in time to see Takeshi stuff the last of the monster into a very large pot. He places the lid on top and sits down on it. He gives you a thumbs up. “Mission accomplished.”

“Good job, Takeshi.” You say, “Now we need to figure out what to do with this.”

>>
>>41379760
Better than candy meat. Also half formed hypothesis: The teeth are some form of corrupted balancing mechanism working on the worlds "engine". When the world knows something should be somewhere but doesn't quite know what to put in, the Grinning Genius can sub in the object "teeth" to fill the gap. But the "texture" for teeth includes a "gap" to either side which corpses the information immediately around a tooth thereby propagating the substitution of more "teething artifacts". Also something something gums.

You gaze at the pot.

You have no idea what to make of this.

“Lilac,” You ask, “Do you know what this is?”

The dwarf shakes her head. “Never seen anything like it before.”

“You sure? No secret hidden lore anywhere?”

“Not that I know of. Might be something from a different server if anything.”

You scratch your chin. “Has anyone seen something like this before?”

Judi and Takeshi both shake their heards.

This is going to take some thinking. Deep thinking. There is only one thing to do.

You take your last True Lever from your bag and begin to flick it up and down.

The things seems to be a thing that makes teeth. It creates teeth and then hides it everywhere like some kind of reverse toothfairy.

UP

The toothfairy exchanges money for teeth, so maybe the reverse toothfairy takes teeth away if you give it money.

“I've got it!” You say, pulling out a gold coin. “Open it.”

Takeshi hesitates before lifting up the lid of the pot.

You toss the coin in there and then yell, “Now close it!”

Takeshi slams the pot lid back on and hops upon it to strengthen the seal.

You wait a bit longer before motioning the pot to be opened once more.

You see the teeth are still there.

You motion for it to be closed again.

UP

UP

What could have gone wrong? Wait. It's the opposite toothfairy, so it doesn't deal with gold, but the opposite of gold. What's the opposite of gold?

UP

Lead! Of course!

“Lilac, do you have some lead?” You inquire.

“Why?” Lilac looks very confused.

“So we can trade it to take away the teeth of course.”

“What?”

“It's the reverse toothfairy, obviously. And since the toothfairy deals in gold, the reverse toothfairy deals in lead!”

Forgot the picture again.

“That... kinda makes sense, but how do you know it's a reverse toothfairy?”

“Because it's covered in teeth.” You do not understand how it could not be obvious to the others.

“I...” She sighs, “I suppose it doesn't really matter since we're trying to figure out what it is.” She hands over a brick of lead to you.

You ponder over the brick in your hand. “Takeshi, open it up.”

You toss the bar in and Takeshi closes the lid once more.

After a couple more minutes of waiting, Takeshi once more opens the lid.

The teeth are still there.

You let out a sigh. “Fuck it! Cook the damn thing!”

Takeshi takes the pot and throws it onto the stove.

You cook it for a few minutes: No effect.

You cook it for an hour: No effect.

You cook it for an hour and a half: No effect.

You let out a disgruntled sigh. The hell is this thing?

“Something wrong?” You hear the voice of Canis behind you.

You turn around to see Aideen and Canis, hand in hand.

“Wait, are you just now finishing giving King and Confidence that tour?”

“Oh, we finished that hours ago.” Canis responds. You notice Aideen hiding half of a mischievous smirk behind her hand.

“Ah. I see.” Is all you can respond with. You turn your attention back to the pot. It begins to rumble and shake.

You cast fire resistance on yourself and grab hold of the hot pot. “We're taking this outside.” You tell Takeshi, “We can't afford the ship getting contaminated or any of the Landers getting hurt.”

You and the ex-samurai head for the stairway while the pot's movement grows more and more violent. Each step forward adds extra strength to the beast, but as you make your way up the stairs, the force dies down.

You ponder what could have caused that. There was nothing at the stairs besides Canis and Aideen.

Maybe it was reacting to Aideen? But if that were true, why wouldn't it react to the young king Auberon?

Maybe it was reacting to Canis, but what was it about Canis that it was reacting to?

Perhaps you should keep this thing away from Canis while you continue experimenting on it.

You and Takeshi reach the deck of the ship. Small bands of steam waft up from the pot; it appears the pot is too hot for the falling snow.

The two of you peer over the ladder at the side of the ship, and only now do you realize how awkward this is going to be.

“How are we going to get this down?” You ask.

“We'll jump.” Takeshi responds.

“Oh. Right.” You reply, “Adventurer bodies.”

The two of you hop off the side of the ship and fall into the snow. Your legs are completely buried in the snow by the time your feet finally hit the ground.

You push the pot down a little into the snow and with a deep breath you open the lid.

The monstrosity is still there, but the coin and lead are both gone.

You close the lid.
>>
>>41383460
You let out one more sigh. “Any ideas, Takeshi?”

“I could hit it with a spatula.” He responds.

“I don't see how that would help.”

“Would it hurt?”

“Maybe?”

The two of you ponder some more.

“What if...” Takeshi begins, “What if its a monster from South American mythology that feasts upon teeth, and won't be satisfied until it has had its fill of teeth!?”

“Is that a real thing?”

“It could be!”

You shrug. “Alright, Takeshi, put your teeth in there.”

“I'm not ripping my teeth out and putting them in there!”

“Well I sure as hell won't do it!”

You both go back to silently thinking to yourselves.

What do you know about this thing?

You found it under your room, it converts things into teeth, it can survive inside the boiler of a steam engine, it can convert people and monsters into teeth, and it might be the thing that killed the Man in Black. Maybe. That last part was a dream, so you're not quite sure how sure you could be on it.

You throw your hands into the air, “I don't even know! I'm gonna pour booze on it!” You pull out some bottle Boozestrocity and then flip open the lid.

Only teeth remain inside the pot.

You pour booze in it anyways.

It appears to have no effect on the teeth.

You start digging through the pot, but only teeth are in there. No gum-like mass, no lead bar, no gold coin, nothing but teeth.

“What now?” Takeshi asks.

You stare at the pot for a few minutes before dumping its contents. “We get some sleep.”
