When planet Coral deteriorated beyond any hope of terraformation, the Pioneer project was put in place to evacuate the families of the wealthiest, most influential, and most intelligent in an attempt to find a new homeworld. Ragol, the most suitable system found, is a yellow star with an inner asteroid belt, a habitable planet (called Ragol), an ice planet, and a dark matter belt.

Pioneer I, the first ship of its kind, was sent to Ragol to begin colonizing.

Pioneer II arrived seven years later. Upon orbit above the Central Dome of the colony, Pioneer II opened up channels to receive, but was interrupted by an explosion from just outside the Central Dome. The explosion shook the entire planet. All communcation was cut off. Strangely enough, infrastructure damage seemed to be nonexistent.

You are Pheonixia, a female newman and a Hunter's Guild certified Force. You have gained clout with Principal Tyrell after a lucky acquisition of “Red Ring” Rico Tyrell's log. Tyrell, the autocratic leader of Pioneer 2 and Rico's father, has put you on an off-the-books search and rescue mission for Rico.

You have fought your way through the forests of Ragol, slayed a dragon, reclaimed Pioneer I's Central Dome, and discovered the long dead Palman civilization through an ancient artifact, the Elsydeon. With a shard of the once great sword, you are given visions of heroes of the past. The ghosts of Elsydeon warn of Mother Brain, a system of climate control AI responsible for turning the barren Motavia (Ragol) into a green planet filled with often hostile life.

Boarding an ancient satellite in orbit around Ragol revealed two functioning androids. They detail a threat to the Ragol system. “Profound Darkness” is due for another millenial disaster, and you have already discovered its "Dark Energy Wave" emitting from the Central Dome.
>>
Wren, the android accompanying you from the climate satellite Zelan to Pioneer II, presented his findings on the Pioneer I explosion. The images revealed a "Dark Force" at the epicenter of the mysterious explosion.

You were dismissed by Tyrell, and took the opportunity to explore and gather data from the ancient climate satellite, Kuran, in orbit around Ragol II (Dezolis in the ancient language.) You return to find the principal's office is not taking visitors, not even you. A visit to Zelan reveals that the military has taken over operations.

WORKS, the military organization who has taken over Zelan, captures and interrogates you. Left in a makeshift prison cell, you draw upon the wisdom of the Elsydeon. Newly inspired, you teach yourself the gizonde technique, using it to great effect against your captors. You discover the deactivated Wren and Demi. You manage to reactivate Demi before the station's automated defense system corners and shoots you.

After a brief disorienting vision, you are awakened by Demi. The two of you work together to reactivate Wren, who wipes out the rest of the soldiers. You reunite with your friends at the hospital on Pioneer II. Your next destination: Ragol II.

Ragol II proved to be a harsh location. Combat with the native life separated your group. A Dezolian rescued you from the cold and escorted you to Meese for room an board

You grab a menu wave down the bartender. “So, this penguin casserole. Is it what is sounds like?”
“Yup. Straight from Zosa!” He smiles as he cleans a mug with a rag.
“I need something hot to eat and a lot of alcohol. What can you do for me?”
He puts a finger down on the menu. “We have hot Laerma Cyder. That stuff will give you wings or knock you on your ass, depending on how well you take to it. We also have a nice rappy chowder.”
“Good, I'll take both.”
“Wait wait wait!” Relph interrupts. “You can speak!?”
“Yeah?”
“Why didn't you say anything earlier?”
“I was freezing my ass off and literally got picked up by a green alien. You didn't even ask my name. The least you could do is buy me a drink first.” You realize you sound a bit ungrateful. But, to be honest, this is just your way of coping with green men.
You can't tell if he's shocked or angry, but he's probably a little bit of both.
“I don't know what you've heard, miss, but this is Dezolis. Palmans are the aliens around here!”
You get a few odd looks.
You fiddle with your ears and show one of your claws. “Newman, not a Palman.”
The bartender brings your food. “Well then, Palman or not, your money is good here. That'll be 500 Meseta.”
At first you are surprised that the name of the currency translates so well, then you realize there's no way they'd accept Coralian money.
“Uhm...” You look to Relph, you just glares back at you.
“Well, I wouldn't want to presume anything, miss Newman. I will let you pay for your own food to avoid any implications.” Relph picked a hell of a time to hold a grudge.
“I will cover this poor girl's meal, sir. Please add it to our tab.” A woman in a white robe walks up behind you. She feels familiar, but you don't know how.
“Thank you so much!”
“Think nothing of it. You are clearly not from around here. Espers are always here to help! You really should get more suitable clothing for the weather.”

The Esper takes a seat next to you. “My name is Layla.”

You take a spoonful of the rappy chowder before answering. It tastes exactly as you expected it to. “I'm Pheonixia. My rescuer here is Relph.”

Relph takes a knee. “It was truly nothing ma'am. If anything, it is thanks to the Espers that I have such a good example to follow.” It seems even green aliens can have brown noses.

You notice the rest of the tavern giving the Esper a great deal of deference.

Layla is unphased. “Where do you come from? And what brings you all the way to Meese?”

> A. Tyler. I was traveling. (Lie)

> B. Refuse to answer the first question. Tell her you need to speak to the prophet at Esper mansion.

> C. You come from space and need to talk to the prophet at Esper Mansion.

“I came here with some friends, but we got separated. We are seeking the prophet at Esper Mansion.”

“Oh, well a pilgrimage is very noble of you. We should all be so lucky as to have the great Lutz honor us with his presence.” Layla gets starry eyed and seems to look off into the distance. ”Very few people ever make it so far, though. I've been an Esper since I was 15, but I've only ever heard tales of him.”

The bartender gives Layla a mug of cider with a smile. “Alcohol free.”

“Oh, thank you, sir!” She takes a sip. “It would only be proper for me to ask: What business do you have with Lutz?”

“We are studying the Elsydeon. I have extremely vital information for Lutz.”

You have a thought. “Here, touch this bit of metal, it should answer enough questions.”

You pull out the shard of the Elsydeon. Layla touches it, but nothing seems to happen. “That's...an interesting object. But I feel like I have more questions than before.”

“Look, Lutz will understand if he gets a chance to examine it. It's just very important that he knows that I have this. How do you communicate with him?”

Layla seems skeptical, but continues to humor you. “I can forward this information to my superior. Of course, that's no guarantee that you will get to see Lutz.”

“Well, as long as he get's the information.”

The both of you finish your drinks and make some small talk. You do your best to avoid topics that might relate back to Pioneer II or Ragol.

You thank Relph for his help earlier and exit the bar. He seemed more dumbfounded that an Esper wanted your attention than anything else. More so that you failed to react to the Esper.

Layla turns to you.“So, if you would like to finish your pilgrimage, I can escort you to the mansion.”

> A. You have to find your friends first.

> B. Sure, the sooner the better.

“I need to find my friends first. They are probably in trouble. The lasta time I saw Maiyawynn, a giant owl had her.”

“Oh my...in that case I am duty bound to help you and your friends. Where were you?”

“Some place between Ryuon, Tyler, and Zosa.”

Layla looks out west. “That's a fair distance away. I would understand if you wanted to rest for the night before heading out. Either way, we will need provisions.”

You spend an hour buying some dried penguin strips, trail mix, a coat made of rappy down, and some basic camping supplies.

“We probably should stay here for the night. I just barely fought off hypothermia earlier.”

Layla smiles and gestures for you to follow her to the inn. The two of you share a room where she pulls out a map on a table. You drink some more cider while she goes over the plan.

“Here is Meese. Half a days walk west around these mountains.”

You point to a spot on the map. “There's where we were. We were heading toward Ryuon before we got attacked by some creatures. Maiyawynn got carried off in this direction.” You point toward some mountains north of Tyler. “Ash and Nela went after her, but I can't get in contact with them outside of ten kilometers.”

“With your...MAG partner...right?” She points over your shoulder.

“Yes.”

“So then, how should we go about this?”

> A. Head toward Zosa around the mountains before heading toward Tyler (longest route)

> B. Pass over the mountain near Zosa to head toward your landing site

The next day you head south. You make some small talk to try and pass the time. Eventually you pass through the town of Jut, a town almost entirely populated by Dezolians.

The Dezolians seem to all dress mostly the same. Lots of large hats and robes. It seems the cold doesn't bother them as much as it does you.

It seems that the town is in a valley surrounded by mountains. Your path leads to the end of the valley and over a very tall mountain pass.

Layla turns down the street. “Gumbious Temple is this way. I need to go pay my respects now that I'm here, I'll only be a moment.”

You can feel the eyes of the locals on you. It's not a comfortable feeling.

“I'll just hang out around town. We can meet back up in an hour or so.”

“Thank you for understanding.” Layla gives a quick bow and turns to head toward the temple.

You poke around the shops. Lots of clothing and a few food stalls, a book shop with a few books in a language you can't recognize, and a building off the side off town that seems to be in disrepair.

An old Dezolian confronts you. “What exactly are you?”

“I'm a Newman.” You point to your ears. “I'm guessing there aren't too many around here.”

Another Dezolian shows up. “You look like a cross between a Palman and a beast.”

“That's...actually not that far off when you think about it...” You never really bothered to look into the genetics of constructed beings.

“She's a product of bestiality!”

“Unclean!”

“She will only bring dishonor to the flame. She is an abomination!”

A few more Dezolians seem to have joined the crowd. You are feeling much less comfortable.

“Okay, before anyone jumps to any more conclusions, let's all just calm down.” You put your hands up in a 'calm down' gesture.

“She has claws like a musk cat!”

“What? No! Wait. I was grown in a test tube. I'm just a human with a few tweaks here and there, that's all. No bestiality, no uncleanliness, no abominations, just science. There wasn't even sex involved.” You start backing up until you bump into the shop behind you. The crowd starts to close in.

“The abomination claims to be of virgin birth.”

“She is a false prophet.”

“She must seek to extinguish the flame!”

“Stone her!”

Fuck this.

“I think I should go.”

You attempt to duck through the crowd and run toward the temple, but one of the Dezolians grabs you by your hair.

“Shit!”

You slip and fall on your back, knocking the wind out of you. A stone strike your leg.

“Ah!”

More stones find their way to your gut, another on your head. Tears and blood run down the side of your face.

You hear shouting in a tongue you are not familiar with. The Dezolians burst in into blue flame.

“This one is under my protection!” Layla comes back. She kneels in prayer over you, and speaks in that unfamiliar tongue. Your cuts and bruises rapidly heal.

Layla helps you onto your feet.

“I've never seen a technique like that.”

Layla laughs. “That's no technique. It's magic!”

There are no such things as magic, but there's no time to argue. “Can we leave?”

“Of course. The sooner the better.”

You have since reached the end of the valley, and are fast approaching the snow capped summit of the range separating Jut and the area you landed. There are a few trees and a large nest not far from here. The sun is setting and the air is getting colder.

“So, Pheonixia. Should we set up camp for the night, or try to head down with the sunlight we have left?”

> A. Let's make camp and use the view to try get our bearings in the morning

> B. Let's try to get down the mountain and set up camp near the forest

“Let's make camp and use the view to get our bearings.”

“Alright, I'll set up camp while you get us some firewood.” She starts to unpack the tent.

“On it.”

You pick a nearby tree and shoot a fireball at it's base. The wood creaks and the tree falls directly in front of Layla.

“What on Dezolis?”

You shoot a few more fireballs to get a good flame going.

“How is that?”

“A bit crude, but impressive. It seems you have a strong hand with techniques.”

“I thought you called those magic.”

She smiles understandingly, but with a hint of patronization. “I'm more than familiar with techniques, but I also have some magical training.”

“Such as?”

Layla finishes hammering down a post. She turns to the fire you have made and raises her hand. “Flaeli!”

A beam of energy shoots out of her hands into the fire, rasing the flames to incredible heights and showering the campsite in sparks.

“Impressive...” You can't help but feel ab it jealous.

You hear a familiar crowing overhead. An owl with a burn mark on its chest lands on the other side of the fire.

“This is the owl that took my friend!”

“I see...Hewn!”

Winds gust around the bird, bringing flames with it. The owl is terrified. Layla beings tying a rope around herself and you.

“What are you doing?”

“Snow Owls bring their...findings...to their nest.” Layla throws a lasso around the owl's neck. “We must have attracted its attention while it was looking for food. It will bring us to wherever it took your friend!”

“So we're going to ride it back to where it came from?”

She gives you a mischievous grin. “That's the plan.”

Before you have a chance to object, she casts another wind spell to kill the flames. The Owl flies away. The rope grows taught and the two of you are lifted off the ground with a jerk.

“For the record, this is fucking insane!”
