After almost having your head cut off, you now find yourself in a small cage made out of wood in a small tent in the encampment. Not like you’re one of those people who like weird things or anything, but you’re actually a bit disappointed with the situation you’re currently in. When you heard you were being put into jail, you were expecting something… a little more stimulating to be honest. As it stands, this wooden cage doesn’t have anything and it can’t even hold 5 adults in it.

Aside from your cage, there are a few others too, but they are all empty anyway.

“You really went overboard back then, you idiot…” Scarlett told you, from outside of the cage. “Be glad that your head is still attached to your neck.” What she said sounds harsh, but from her tone of voice, you know that she’s honestly glad that you’re still alive, especially after that stun you just pulled earlier.

“Still, that was definitely impressive though.” Reynard, the mercenary, commented. “It’s not every day you see a commoner punching a minister in the face like that. Good punch by the way.” He also gave you a thumb up.

>Look at him unamused.
>Thank him for stopping the minister from executing you.
>Ask him what would happen to you now.
>Ask him what would happen to Scarlett now.

“Oh, about that…” Reynard scratched his head. “I got to tell you this beforehand though, in case you have any more funny ideas. If you were thinking that the minister was up to no good earlier, well, he actually was really just trying to help…”

Scarlett shot him a funny look, she doesn’t say anything though.

“Well, this is an encampment, you know?” Reynard continued. “There are female troops, true. But this place doesn’t have them, there are only dudes here, and leaving a female like you alone with them could have led to… unfortunate situations. The minister was just telling you to rest at a place dude-free, is all.”

>Whoops, guess I misunderstood him then?
>I don’t believe you one bit.

The minister did act really questionable though. If someone else was in your position, you bet they would have had the wrong idea too. Even if Reynard did save your life, it would still be really hard for you to believe that the minister really had good intentions. Plus, punching the minister in the face was probably the most satisfying thing you ever done recently.

“Well, can’t blame you for doubting me.” Reynard shrugged. “Whatever flow your boat, I guess.” He looked over to Scarlett. “Though about your friend here.”

“What? I’m not going back to the creep, no matter what intention may have had!” Scarlett said.

“I wasn’t asking you to do that.” Reynard sighed. “Well, after what happened though. Who knows what would happen if the minister sees your face again. I bet my friend Norbert is having the time his life being yelled at and smacked around in your place as we’re speaking. So…”

Reynard walked over to the empty cage next to yours and opened it.

“Don’t act like that.” Reynard said. “Being inside the cage would serve the purpose of keeping her out of reach of all the men out there, and avoid seeing the minister’s face at the same time too. It may be a bit uncomfortable, but it would only be temporary. I’ll let you two out once the minister calms down. And oh, I’ll provide food too, I promise.”

“Hm…” Scarlett looked at you with a serious look on her face for a second, then looked away almost immediately. “Being locked inside a cage together with the only person I know around here, or being locked inside this encampment full of smelly sweaty guys I don’t know? Do I really have a choice here?”

You could swear Reynard is grinning like a small child seeing his new toy after hearing Scarlett said that.

“Okay, it’s decided then.” Reynard acted like a butler and gestured Scarlett to enter the cage. “If you please, madam.”

Needless to say, Scarlett isn’t very amused with that. But there’s nothing else she can do, so she just enter the cage without saying anything. Reynard then locked the cage.

“Lord Reynard!” A soldier from outside of the tent called in. “Have you finished yet?”

“Yes, I’m done here!” Reynard replied. “Coming now!” He looked back at you and Scarlett. “Guess this is it for now. See you two again for lunch.”

“See ya.” Scarlett waved at him with a bored look on her face.

Second, Isn't there rules against such a sudden draft in the first place? Are we even getting paid for this?
>>
>>41440511
>>41440575
You stopped Reynard from leaving because you have some questions you wanted to ask of him. Reynard doesn’t seem to mind and hanged back to have a little chat with you.

First, you thanked him again for saving.

“No problem.” He grins. “Seeing you getting executed for protecting your girlfriend would have left me in bad taste anyway.”

“I’m not his girlfriend.” Scarlett quickly corrected him.

“Oh, is that so? Could have sworn you two were though.” Reynard looked at you two with a funny look. “What’s with the super aggressive attitude because the minister made the wrong choice of words and all.”

You gave him an unamused look for a second, then get straight to the question you wanted to ask: Why did they issue an emergency draft so sudden and so roughly. To your knowledge, there should be rules against such sudden draft in the first place. And then there’s the fact you haven’t heard any rumor about a coming war with what you believe to be Asier northern neighbor, Eiz, judging by the location of your village nearing the Asier – Eiz border. The attack on your village was as sudden as a lightning struck down from the sky, how could anyone have know about this beforehand and mobilize the troops so fast in response?

Continue next post.
>>
>>41441040
“…” Reynard’s face turned into a serious look. “You’re sharper than I thought.” He paused to think for a little then continued. “First, I just got reassigned here the other day, I was at the southern border before, so I’m just as lost as you about this sudden attack. But the draft was personally issued by the prime minister… The minister that you earlier, what’s his name? Oh whatever, that minister went all the way out to this frontline to issue that order, so it must have been a really serious problem. The higher ups most likely have something that they are keeping secrets from you commoners.”

“T-that’s what you’re worrying about right now?” Scarlett looks shocked.

This is important! How else would you be able to fight if support your family, your friends, everyone in your village, if you’re not properly fed and get paid for your services?

“Argh…” Scarlett shook her head in annoyance.

“Well, first…” Reynard began answering your questions. “Of course you’re going to get paid, there will be a riot otherwise. The money you earned depended on your performance in a battle though. And for the second question, probably just plain soup and a loaf of bread at most. This is an encampment so we don’t have the luxury to choose our food.”

“’kay…” Reynard turned to ask Scarlett. “Pretty lady over there, want to ask me anything else?”

“Nope.” Scarlett answered immediately. “Not interest in wasting my time thinking about stupid political things.”

“’kay then. I’m off.” Reynard stood up and walked out of the tent, but then like he remembered something and headed back in. “I never really introduced myself, did I? The name’s Reynard. You guys?”

“Scarlett here.” Scarlett answered.

Now what? You asked yourself. Looking around, there’s really not much you can do right now. Of course, being caged and all.

Scarlett is leaning on back on the wooden cage, looking tired. You can’t really blame her for feeling tired, a lot happened since last night.

You looked to outside of the tent, and saw the guard soldier outside was peeking in, curiously.

“I was going to do that anyway…” Scarlett replied and turned away from you.

You said nothing else and stayed silent. It’d be easier for Scarlett to get some rest this way.

“Hey…” Scarlett suddenly spoke up. “About earlier… Thanks for protecting me.” She said it in such a small voice that you fear that you’ve misheard something.

You thought back about what you did earlier, and decided to apologize to her.

>"Sorry I got you involved in my mess. I'm becoming Erkan, I swear."

“You did nothing wrong…” Scarlett, still has her back turned to you, said. “If it was the other way around, I’d probably do the same thing.”

With that, the whole place once again went back to silent. You decided to take some rest too.

Next post in a few minutes.

A few hours passed, and it's now midday. If you were still at home, then you’re probably having lunch right now. The hunger is killing you, especially since you haven’t had anything since last night.

Then, Reynard came in. “Hey there!” His voice echoed loud and clear. “Hungry yet? Your lovely lunch has arrived!”

He then sat down in the middle of the two cages and put the lunch down on the ground. You can’t help but notice that there was only a small bowl of soup and a tiny loaf of bread.

>I expected more for lunch for two.

Reynard looked at you and silently nodded.

Scarlett took a peak at the lunch. “Why only this much?” She scowled. “This can’t even make one person full. Where’s Travis’s lunch?”

“Sorry…” Reynard apologized. “I was going to get two normal sets for you two, but the minister threw it all away. After much begging from me and my friend, the minister allowed me to bring the food, but only to Scarlett. And he made sure that I only delivered this tiny amount of food so you two can’t share.”

Scarlett looked at the lunch and then looked at you. She looks really troubled a second, but then acted like it was nothing. “Oh whatever… I was on a diet anyway. Travis, suit yourself.”

Scarlett keep insisting on you having the lunch, but after much persuasion from you, Scarlett finally gave in took the lunch. She didn’t seem like she’s enjoying it, but with what little energy she could have gathered from the lunch, she now looks a lot better than just a few minutes ago.

You, on the other hand, not so much…

“Again, my apology.” Reynard apologizes again. “If I had thought this before, than I would have saved some of my soup for you. I promise I’ll do so come dinner.”

You told him that he didn’t have to do that, he didn’t object but you have a feeling he’d do what he want later anyway.

Scarlett finished the lunch and get back to rest. Reynard also left. You now find yourself alone again with the still empty stomach. The guard outside was peeking in like he really wanted to tell you something.

“’kay, give me a sec.” The guard then disappeared from your sight and reappeared after a few seconds. He must have had someone delivered the lunch to him beforehand.

“Here.” He handed his lunch to you. A bowl of soup and a small loaf of bread. Comparing to the lunch Scarlett had, this one is undoubtedly has more to fill your stomach.

You’d feel guilty eating all this alone, but the guard happily gave the lunch to you so he probably won’t mind, and Scarlett already had her fill, asking her to have lunch again most likely only serve to make her angry at you.

Thinking so, you proceed to chow down the lunch in a blink of an eye. Man, that must have been the most satisfying lunch you’ve ever had in your life.

“Of course.” The guard smiled. “You think I’d seriously try to scam a prisoner?”

You let out a sigh of relief. Looks like he’s a good guy after all.

“You still owe me though.” The guard continued. “Either get me another lunch or pay me 100G when you get out of there.”

You take back what you said about him being a good guy.

“My name’s Jake.” The guard introduced himself. “Nice to meet you.”

You introduced yourself to Jake to and the two of you chatted for a little. Apparently, he has a merchant girlfriend named Anna who loves money a lot, so he’s been going around doing odd jobs to satisfy her. He’s also doing guard shifts for others in exchange for some cash, so he’ll probably be around for a while.

You’re having a bad feeling about this so you woke Scarlett up just in case.

“Urgh… Just… 5 more minutes…” Looks like she’s still enjoying her beauty sleep a bit too much, so you took a pebble on the ground and threw it at her. “Ouch! What did you do that for?!” She scowled, but quickly took notice of the sound of the horn. “What’s going on?” She asked.

You also had no idea, so you called out to Jake and ask him.

“Oh, the horn? Most likely just one of those unexpected drill again.” He calmly said. “New recruits just came in this morning, so this is just one of those welcome gifts. Don’t you worry.”

“I don’t like it.” Scarlett said, her voice shaken. “I have a bad feeling about this…”

“Hm…” Jake sighed. “If it’s gonna calm you down somewhat, Imma’ go take a look outside.” After saying so, he left.

You waited for Jake for quite a while, but he still hasn’t back yet, and outside of the tent is getting noisier by the minute. Even you’re starting to get worried.

It was just a normal lock that you can find anywhere, but the problem here is that you don’t have the key to open it, the key is in Reynard’s hands. So, took a small stone on the ground and tried your hardest to smash the lock open.

The noise outside is getting louder and louder, you’re even hearing screams everywhere. This alerted you to hurry up, but the lock still refuse to push like it’s mocking you’re powerlessness. Then, you heard the sound of running footsteps, and it’s getting close and closer to where you are. And then…

“Travis! Scarlett!” Erkan jumped into the tent. “Damn you both!” He cursed. “You both really caused too much trouble for me, you know that?”

“Erkan?! What are you doing here?” Scarlett asked. “And what the hell is going on outside?”

“Do you even need to ask? I’m here to save you two sorry asses, that’s what!” Erkan quickly moved over to Scarlett’s cage, and took out something small and started doing something to the lock. “And we’re being attacked! Again! If you can’t tell by all those noises going on!”

Finished unlocking Scarlett’s cage, Erkan immediately went over to unlock your cage. “That’s twice in a row we’re getting attacked during the nights! Twice! Two nights! In a row!”

He continued cursing all the while unlocking your cage. At least he’s doing something productive for a change.

After freeing you from your cage. Erkan threw Scarlett a set of bow and arrows. “Here, Scarlett. You use bow, right? I’m not gonna save your sorry asses again out there so use this and protect yourself.”

“What about Travis? Give him some weapons to protect himself.” Scarlett urged Erkan.

“Like hell I’m gonna pick some more of those swords or lances lying around out there.” Erkan said. “Just having the bow and arrows for you is already enough to slow me down. And this knife here is for me! I’m not giving it to anyone!”

Erkan and Scarlett continued arguing at each other, but you quickly stepped in and reminded them that escaping should be the number one priority right now. They both agreed with something for a change and the three of you started making your escape.

All right, I think this is a good point to stop for this session. We’ll continue tomorrow. Thank you all for participating.

Thanks for running, QM. Action starts tomorrow, right?
Also, Erkan is officially our thief of the group.
I find it hilarious that he is the one saving us. Wish he got us a sword or something, but I bet we will find something.

We spear.

That's the plan, and thanks for participating. I really appreciate it.

And oh, I think I shouldn't ask this, but what do guys think should be the right pacing? Writing all the things the characters say and do will be dragging, but writing summaries and skip ahead to the main event sounds rush.

I don't mind how it's going right now.

Ah, right. Forgot that we are still a villager. Then, I hope for a good spear.

My only complaint is the frequencies of the posts themselves seem too long sometimes. But I can manage that. Keep with a pace that you want. Other than that, I'm fine.
