Quest Start

Its warm. Its warm and you are taken up and softly carried onward by a sense of peace. A sense of peace and a loss of tension floats you through the recesses of your mind. You are drifting while held, warm and safe, ever toward the open sky until a snap and electric hum pulls you back to earth.

Waking slowly, you find yourself in unusual but rather comfortable trappings. Cuddled on the couch with your head on your older sister’s lap, your younger sister curled around your side, and a small ball of fuzzball splayed across your shoulder. A blanket has been haphazardly lain across the three of you. You have come to in the living room, the windows outside indicate that it's still night, the room itself is dark; but light cuts the shadows around you from the archway through to the kitchen.

Activity sounds from the next room. Shadows play across the streams of light as your eyes adjust and you can make out the distinct sounds of cooking, specifically of something behind chopped.

Untangling yourself from your siblings, who sleep like the dead, and setting the sleepy kitten on your shoulder back down among the rest of them on the couch; you make your way over to the kitchen. Glancing back, you watch your younger sister slowly flow into the space you once occupied. Hungry for the material warmth your body left impressed upon the couch’s cushions and then Usa’s own encircling grasp, she tunnels into the space left by the throw blanket that had been used to cover the lot of you.
>>

You snicker in appreciation at the makeup job your sister gave herself. At one point last night you demonstrated the proper techniques you would nominally use in both ganguro fashion and for your more spooky endeavors. She tried her hand on her own features under your guidance and instruction and did fairly well, though much like Usa she has a major talent for drawing. It didn’t surprise you how intricate and detailed Koyomi managed to make her face.

Standing in the kitchen, chopping a daikon radish, is your father. His suit jacket is draped across a chair at the table, and he is wearing a black apron over her shirt and pants.

“Good morning Mikage,” he smiles and pushes the chopped remnants of radish off of the cutting board and into a small bowl alongside other small bowls of chopped veggies.

~Morning dad,~ you yawn, ~When did you get home?~

“Less than an hour ago,” he shrugs, “I saw you girls on the couch and thought you looked a bit cold,”

~Making breakfast?~ you query at his activity.

“Yeah, since my sleep cycle still hasn’t caught up with being in Japan, I figured I might as well do some cooking and send you girls off to school with a nice breakfast and some lunch boxes,” he points to the table where there already are stacked boxes waiting and labeled for yourself and Koyomi, “If I didn’t take care of you girls while she was away, I doubt your mother would be pleased,”

You are Mikage Chiba, second year highschool student fifteen years old, formerly you were the magical champion of love and justice known as Sailor Moon. You were the third woman to carry that title after your mother and big sister, now that name belongs to your younger sister and you are doing what you can to support her and her allies.

It is very early on a Monday morning, and your high school is reopened today after some nasty business with a supernatural attack on members of the student body. A lot has happened in your life since that day, and you are a both excited and apprehensive about resuming your scholarly life.

>Help dad with breakfast, what is he making?

Telling your father that you’ll be back for breakfast, you jaunt upstairs and change into your windbreaker and shorts. With all the running you’ve been doing it's time to focus on your upper body for a bit, and possibly get some bigger sports bras.

Passing through the kitchen again on your way to the back yard, you set about into your warm up exercises before going into alternating sets of back extensions, crunches, and their variations. Last night’s cookie binge needs to be worked off, and after your core is thoroughly worked, you decide to focus on your chest.

Pushups and isometric arm exercises dominate the rest of your routine. By the end of these sets, you let yourself fall flat onto the ground as the sun crests the back fence, soaking your burning muscles in a warming light. It isn’t quite so comfortable, and rolling onto your back you regard the clear and brightening sky with a smile. Its a new day. A new week.

A tomorrow filled with new possibilities as you go back to school.

“Mikage, breakfast,” your father calls while stepping out onto the back porch, “I made tamagoyaki,”

~I’ll be in, just want to do one last set,~ you wave back to him and kip up before pouncing forward and planting both hands firmly on the ground.

Just two more set of pushups before breakfast, but you’ll make it a bit harder. As one hand snakes behind your back, the other carries your full weight. Right for the first set. Left for the second.

Your arms burn pleasantly by the time you are done.

“So, ready to go back to school?” your father asks as you close the sliding french doors to the backyard closed and pat your neck down with a towel you had brought out with you.

~I’m as ready as I can be,~ you smile and take a seat at the table, where you gratefully take up your chopsticks for the rolled omelette, finely chopped daikon, and a small salad of freshly chopped peppers, tomato, and onion.
>>
>>41461438

“Well, just promise me that you’ll take things slowly,” he smiles as he sets rice down for the both of you and takes his seat, “You’ve been through a lot recently, and I’m sure your classmates will notice the changes in your behavior,”

~You think that would be a bad thing?~ you wonder as you discover the just how much you missed dad’s cooking.

“No,” he laughs, “Just be braced for people to react to seeing you coming back to yourself,”

~Well, I’m plenty braced for that,~ you mutter and dig into your breakfast with gusto, ~I think I have enough people in my corner to make it through everything,~

Your father nods, and the two of your finish your morning meal in companionable silence. He says he’ll clean up and get started on Koyomi’s breakfast, asking you to wake her up on your way upstairs.

Leaving the kitchen, you stop in the living room to inspect your still sleeping sisters. Koyomi has a look of peaceful joy on her sleeping face, while Usa seems calmly inert. The gentle rise and falls of their chest in unison is adorable.

I think the singular vote of shower is to put her in the shower, though I could be getting the inflection wrong.

Though your intent will be noted upon in the final tally.
>>

Ah, nevermind. Guess mine is a vote for gentle wake up with a suggestion to shower afterward.

If she falls back asleep though, dumping her in the shower afterward is appropriate.

With a smile you step in front of the couch and kneel down; slowly you set about the task to extract your baby sister from your older sister’s protective grasp. Sitting her upright, her head lolls to one side as she continues sleeping undisturbed by your gentle motions. Moving the blanket so its coverage is only upon Usa and the cats, you set about waking her with your sweetest and softest voice.

~Koyomi-chan,~ you shake her gently while speaking softly, ~Wake up, sleepyhead, we fell asleep on the couch,~

Her response is a mumbled incoherence, though she pitches forward and her face rests upon your shoulder. She continues to slumber, slowly drooling on your windbreaker.

~Koyomi,~ you sigh and hold up her chin to face you, looking at her makeup darkened face you can’t help but be amused, ~come on, you don’t want to be late for school,~

She doesn’t immediately respond, her eyes remain closed, a field of star flecked light blue serving as eyeshadow holds where she should be meeting your eyes. The swirling lighter pattern surrounding the blush on her cheeks is smeared from her sleeping, you imagine it made an impression in the back of your normal clothes and in Usa’s lap.

She gurgles, makes a happy sound after sloppily wiping the excess drool from her mouth with the back of her arms, and then pitches forward onto you. Her arms, including the drool covered one, drape over your shoulders as she sleepily nuzzles into you.

~Ko-yo-mi,~ you stretch out each syllable of her name as your eyebrow twitches slightly.

Oh well. If you keep trying to wake her like this, she’ll inevitably be late for school. Lowering your arms and scooping her off the couch, to which she responds by tightening her arms around your shoulders, you carry your little sister upstairs with a surprising amount of ease. You did you best to do this the easy way, so you’ll have to use the surefire way that you know will work.
>>
>>41464034
You’d be remiss to deny her a chance to have a home cooked breakfast from your father.

Heading into the bathroom, you rest the still pajama clad girl into the floor of the shower, propping her against the back wall. She still has the same empty smile on her face of a young girl still beset by pleasant dreams. Unhooking the shower head from its holder and holding it by the extended cable, you aim carefully and turn on the flow.

For the unexpected drool hug, you set it for cold.

“GAH!” your sister all but shrieks in the sudden deluge of cold water that you immediately cut off.

Suddenly alert she flails and looks about in confusion as she takes in her surroundings.

~Dad asked me to wake you up for some breakfast, but you were giving me some problems, sis,~ you scold her with a satisfied smile, ~We all fell asleep on the couch last night and you must not have gotten enough sleep because nothing I did worked,~

“Mi-Mikage, t-that w-was mean,” you little sister whines as you debate turning the flow on again.

~It was necessary,~ you explain, ~Now do you want to go downstairs for breakfast or get cleaned up first,~

She is about to answer, but pauses as her stomach makes itself and her decision known for you. Pouting, she and shoots up standing ramrod straight with her arms crossed as you turn to put the shower head back up into its holder. Pausing after she’s passed you, she looks at your position, and then at the shower head. You stare at her; she stares at you.

In one act of sisterly retribution she quickly reaches over and pulls the lever to return flow to the shower head as it points down at you head on. COLD!

COLD COLD COLD! Actually given your workout it is a bit refreshing, but seriously, COLD!

“REVENGE!” she cackles as she darts from the room.
>>
>>41464058

She-you-what? You laugh at her retreat and fumble to turn off the water long enough to get stripped down and get a towel on hand for your morning shower. Replacing the icy retort with something steamy and cleansing, you set about clearing yourself off and then preparing for how you’ll face the day.

No longer the sickly pale you had developed in your isolation, or attractively pale granted by your vampiric transformation, your skin has resumed a normal and probably healthy color. This pleases you to a certain extend as your dry off and contemplate how to do your hair once you get back to your room and slip into your seifuku.

Argh, you may need to get a new shirt for your uniform. Oh well, you’ll just have to chalk this up to posture when you get to school. Actually…

You test slouch a few times, and it does help a bit in regard to the strain across your shirt. With this tactic ready, you tie off the bow of your uniform and slip on your locket before considering the flowing locks that pool behind your on the floor.

Decision made and carefully brushed and prepared, after a few moments of you marveling over just how soft to the touch your super voluminous hair has become, you check yourself over in the mirror one last time and snatch up your school bag. Its time to head to school.

Heading out into the hallway, you find Koyomi also stepping out of her room. She grins broadly and laughs a touch to herself until she yelps at your unexpected presence behind her. Quickly regaining her composure she points at you in victory.

“I got you back good in the shower,” she declares proudly.

~Yeah, I guess you did,~ you smile and lean in to pat her on the shoulder.

“Thanks for waking me up though,” she smiles, “I’m actually on time today,”

~Its a good feeling, isn’t it?~

“Well, it's a kind of feeling,” she sighs, “At least I won’t have to stand in the hall again,”

Your double looped buns sway behind you and bounce against the small of your back as you quickly step down the stairs. Your father stands there waiting for you and hands off your lunch bentos with a smile and a quiet offer that the two of you should have great days. Usa continues to sleep on the couch, it seems in the presence of additional space the two Dianas resumed their humanoid forms.

A thought strikes you as you get to the street beyond the small front yard. You’re sure Koyomi will understand.

~Hey, Koyomi,~

“What is it, Mikage-nee?” she spins to face you, her school bag held in front of her.

~Well, it's our first day back, and I think Kairi might be a bit apprehensive about things,~ you admit in concern, ~So I’m going to swing over to her house and see if she wants to walk to school with me,~

Koyomi stares at you for a few seconds, and then closes the space between you to give you a hug. It calms your nerves and fills you with a tinge of regret over hosing your baby sister down earlier.

Breaking the hug, she steps back and smiles at you. With a laugh she spins and rushes down the street toward the schools.

“Bye Mikage-nee, see you after school,” she cheers and vanishes to the morning.

That girl, seriously.

You make haste to the Osaka house, luckily enough you see Kairi-chan closing the door behind her on the porch.
>>
>>41466568

~Kairi-chan!~ you call out and come to a stop before the yard.

“Oh, good morning, Mikage,” she says, surprised to see you.

~Do you want to walk to school together?~ you ask and swing your bag behind your back and hold it there with both hands.

She thinks on it a moment before nodding.

“Sure, lets go,”

The two of you walk side by side quietly for a few blocks. Its nice. While it’s otherwise silent, it feels nice not to be alone. You imagine Kairi feels much the same way; and as you fall in with the morning flow of students you feel secure that the two of you are facing that tide together.

In fact, the two of you together already seem to be attracting the attention of familiar faces from school. No one you really know by name, but people you recognize all the same.

~So, how’re you feeling today, Kairi-chan,~ you ask, ~Are you worried about going back to school and seeing everyone?~

“I’d say I’m more nervous than worried,” she sighs and runs a hand along the back of her neck, “I have all these expectations about how people are going to think of me...but I know that won’t matter,”

You turn to look at her, keeping stride alongside her.

~It won’t matter?~ you wonder aloud.

“I don’t need to care about what everyone else thinks,” she smiles, “there are more important things to worry about,”

~Ah, now you’re making me feel guilty,~ you blush.

“I’m not just talking about you,” she skips a few steps ahead, “The past two weeks, making new friends, helping someone else deal with being a monster, and getting back in step with you,”

She turns and walks backwards, facing you as you move through the pedestrian streets.

“All of it has given me reasons to pull myself out of that place, Mikage-chan,” she smiles, “And I just have a really good feeling now,”

~Well,~ you reason as she turns around and slows her step to match back up beside you, ~You’ve earned it,~

Turning a corner, you talk a bit more about this and that, Kairi complimenting your choice of hairstyle today. Soon enough the school building comes into view with Principal Sakurada standing firmly by the entrance way watching her student population enter. Her eyes sweep the street, and settle on you and Kairi-chan.

Principal Haruna Sakurada, a middle aged woman with still full and high volume brown hair clad in a business smart blazer with a complimentary color knee length pencil skirt, looks at you and Kairi as you approach among the morning crowd of students en route for their assorted classes. Her eyes zeroed in on the two of you among the growing morning crowd, she’s been searching for one of you, waiting.

You haven’t been to school in over a week, no one has, so there is really nothing she could have to talk to you about from a disciplinary standpoint. And besides that, the disciplinary committee is student organized, you can see a pair of girls in hall monitor sashes checking names off clipboards as they witness your fellow students enter. More than likely she wants to talk to you again on the subject of your academic withdraw.

Something you’ve been seriously reconsidering.

“Miss Chiba, Miss Osaka,” Principal Sakurada greets the two of you when finally within range, “Good morning, how are the two of you today?”

~Good morning, I’m fine today, Sakurada-san,~ you smile and offer a shallow and quick bow.

“Good morning, I’m fine today as well,” Kairi bobs nervously.

“That’s good, also good to see the two of you walking to school together,” the principal smiles, “Chiba-san, after classes let out today I’d like to speak to you about your application,”

~Yes,~ you nod, starting to move past her before you catch a brief look of indecision play across her face before settling back into a smile and she grabs your attention one last time.

“I was sorry to hear that you wound up in the hospital during the unscheduled break. I’m glad to see you’re back on your feet. My son mentioned he had gone to see you,” you tense up at the implication of Yoshi, as your principal leans in conspiratorially, “though afterwards, he seemed a bit down. Actually, he’s been acting a bit strange since then in a few other ways,”
>>
>>41476028
~Oh?~ you ask as a nervous chill runs the length of your spine and Kairi leans against your shoulder with her own to help you keep your suddenly diminishing balance.

“Well, I’m sure it's nothing,“ she offers in a heavy handed stage whisper, “but if the two of you are ready to be social with your classmates again, I don’t suppose I could ask you to try to see if anything is bothering your class rep?”

When Yoshi Sakurada was helping tutor you back in middle school, you occasionally had your sessions at his house. Though she was usually busy with her then new appointment as Principal of Juuban Central High School, his mother very much seemed to like you. In retrospect you think she liked the idea of you and her son together.

While you could suspect her of trying to get you and Yoshi back on friendly now that you seem to be acting like a capable human being again, there is something else you can see behind her motivations. She is earnestly concerned for her son, and after the way things left off during his hospital visit, you suspect something might actually be wrong.

Your mind drifts back to the shattering of glass and the lacerations across your knuckles in the green room of that club. All that misdirected anger born of your own guilt and regret. Maybe today is a chance to either try to put that to bed or see if you would start anew.

Gathering your resolve, and your own footing, you glance at Kairi and nod to your Principal.

~I can’t promise anything,~ you say simply and cheerfully.

“Yeah, we’re both just trying to get back into the swing of things, Sakurada-san,” Kairi offers with some exasperation.

“I know it's a bit much,” she sighs and steps out of your way, “I’m sorry for dropping that on you girls this morning, I’ll just ask Endo-kun when he gets here,”
>>
>>41476043

Daigo Endo, you think responsively, one of Yoshi’s best friends. You don’t know him very well, but people always say he is reliable and kind which contrasts his big and brutish appearance. He’s on the student council with Teal, er, Council President and Senior Nui Takeda.

Bidding a quick goodbye to the Principal, you and Kairi hurry along to the rows of shoe lockers behind the first floor entrance of the academic building. Your best friend, judging by the playful look across her features, is probably debating how best to jeer you over the matter of Sakurada-san returning to the role of nosy and intervening mother. She doesn’t as the two of you split off to your respective lockers and stow your shoes for your slippers.

To your surprise, there is a simple white envelope in your locker alongside your slippers. Curious. You feel as though there are eyes on you as you pull it out to inspect it, not unexpected. Well, the note is unexpected. People being surprised that Princess No had just walked onto campus alongside monster girl and with her head held high was bound to draw a bit of attention.

You’d be lying if you didn’t have some pride in the idea of people also gossiping or whispering about the changes in your appearance. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, be amazed at your no longer hidden beauty and be jealous of your blessings. The social order will be upturned by your return.

You pause, you’d been keeping victorious and proud laughter in check. More than likely a sliver of Miki’s return to your psyche, that pride and confidence. Its not a bad thing, you muse to yourself and retrieve your slippers while storing your shoes.

Now, about this note?

“Good morning, Chiba-san,” a familiar and eternally friendly voice chimes beside you as a nearby shoe locker closes.

Turning, you see the tall and broad shouldered Gai Ginja. Secretly, this classmate of yours is a space alien plant person, though he’s nice enough all the same. Huh, maybe you were just being paranoid or too big headed before, the presence you felt was probably just Gai.

~Good morning, Ginja-kun,~ you greet him, ~How was your break?~

He sighs.

“Frustrating,” his posture slacks for a moment before he rolls his shoulders back up, “Managed to get moved into a larger apartment and get my younger siblings enrolled as first years in the junior high. Aside from the few meals out I shared with Osaka-san, it was rather hectic. Frankly I’m glad to be back to school,”

~As long as there are no explosions,~ you nod, while suppressing something.

“Oh, of course,” he laughs, “Oh, have you seen Osaka-san today by chance?”

There is a brief flare of jealousy, but you put it aside as you remember Kairi-chan asked Gai out. It would be untoward to try and scare him away from her. Actually you aren’t sure if you could scare Gai off of Kairi, he seems a touch oblivious to her feelings.

Though is she still pursuing that? Wasn’t it to test the waters to see if Koito Kinno got jealous? You should really follow up about all that, for multiple reasons.

~Yes,~ you offer, ~We walked here together this morning,~

“Oh, alright then. I’m sure I’ll catch up with her later. Have a good day, Chiba-san,” he steps off among the crowd to socialize.

Counting up.

As Gai disappears among the morning rush of students through the shoe lockers and entrance halls, you slide your fingernails into the corner of the envelope and pull down. Might as well see what someone was so keen on leaving you a note for before you start your academic day.

‘Stay away from Sugimoto-san,’ it reads in black calligraphy before the ink is changed for something red, ‘Or else,’

You fold the note back up carefully, return it to the envelope, and place it in your bag.

This was never going to be easy, but that kind of hostility was a bit unexpected. Your eyes scan up and down the row of shoe lockers you are standing in, people you know and don’t are in the middle of their own morning conversations. Catching up with friends they’ve missed since the attack. Sharing rumors, sharing gossip, sharing news, and living their young lives. It dawns on you that the presence watching you earlier might not have been just Gai Ginja.

Someone was watching you, unable to accept the idea of Princess No befriending the school’s idol to the point of issuing a threat.

And that’s all it is for now.

A threat.

Even if it was something more the chance of it being an actual danger to you is slim. None of the people who might have done this have any idea of all you have done for them, and all you could do in retribution to any violence raised against you.

-Careful now,- Zoisite tries to offer calming words, -they might be trying to get a rise out of you, princess,-

Bristling inside of you, the beast gains footing anew with projected and potential righteous anger. If you need it, you’ll use it. Her anger is your own after all. Though you ultimately take the blonde specter's calming influence.
>>
>>41477315

Leaving it be, you walk through the halls and up the stairs toward your homeroom class. Some people seem to pay attention to you in the hallway; your now fanned flames of paranoia notice the whispers, concern, glances, and leers of your fellow students. You’ll walk proudly and with intent.

Entering your classroom, you find your seat against the hallway wall and hang your bag at the side of your desk. As of yet, you don’t see any signs of Midori, Keiko, or Kairi. Just as well. You need to take time to take stock of yourself.

Only a handful of your classmates are here yet; a few girls chatting by the windows, two guys excitedly talking about a baseball game from the day prior, and Yoshi Sakurada diligently scribbling something on a few loose sheets of paper at his desk. There is one more person in the room, looming behind you and wreathed in an aura of serious intent, that you somehow haven’t taken notice of yet.

>You have time, go talk to Yoshi. About what?
>Go see what those girls are talking about, maybe it isn’t you
>Check your phone before you have to leave it alone for the next few hours
>Try to talk sports, with boys? Yeah, that’s outside your comfort zone
>Just sit quietly, read one of the books you brought

While I fully intend on giving Yoshi an apology.. actually, maybe at the start of the day is the best time, do we know a time we could catch him that would be less public, other than after school?

Looming presence might still be distracting from that though.

You know, we originally let perception slide with plans to ask Luna if there were any widgets for that, and we still haven't, 90 threads later.

Maybe if we go into crafting, we could make our own perception booster.

Though it seems we have inherited our mother's perception for now.

As you take stock of the classroom around you, you finally gain awareness of the direct scrutiny you yourself are under. It shoots up your spine like a bullet as your realize the proximity immediately behind.

Wrenching your chair to the side, so the back is against the wall and giving you the opportunity and opening to dart away if you need to, you issue a short and surprised yelp as you are faced with a tall and lanky figure slouching forward and inspecting you with a critical eye and a shakily puffed up aura self importance.

Sickly pale skin, sunken eyes, and stringy long black hair tied back greet you. Her school uniform is extremely ruffled and unkempt, and you can clearly see the shadows under her eyes. She doesn’t budge at your sudden movements.

~OH MY GOD, DON’T SURPRISE ME LIKE THAT,~ you gasp out while clutching your unexpectedly rapidly beating heart.

“Princess No,” she says and leans further into your personal space, “We’ve never spoken before today, except for the time you lent me a pencil. I’m Saori Umeki. We should be friends,”
>>
>>41478874

Everyone else in the classroom is looking at the two of you. The three girls by the window, Yoshi, and the two boys who had been talking about sports. You don’t respond immediately, not liking the sudden attention. Its your own fault for reacting so...so like your mom or Koyomi. A few more students start filtering in, Gai among them. He drifts over to the two boys who had been talking about sports and gets them to reignite their conversation. The girls go back to their own conversation, though they keep glancing your way.

Yoshi, you didn’t even notice when he went back to whatever work he was doing.

Saori Umeki stares at you, trembling a bit to keep up her false front of confidence. Her eyes scream for hope and worry.

>Snap at her, you know she’s delicate but what the hell was that?!

Blinking a few times, in mild shock and confusion, you regard the girl carefully and take a steadying breath as the staccato beat of your heart stabilizes. Meeting the intense worry of Umeki-san’s eyes, you ask after the meaning of this encounter and politely respond to her suggestion of friendship in a mostly positive but non committal way.

~Um, sure. What brought his on, Umeki-san,~ you ask the thin girl who has no concept of personal space.

Her serious eyes shoot wide with shock and she takes a step back, thank goodness because you were feeling a touch crowded. One of her hands flies to her mouth as she mutters to herself.

“Shit, I wasn’t prepared for questions. What am I supposed to do now?” she wonders before reeling back into your face and makes choking gestures to her own neck in a complete lack of tact, “I’m friends with Kairi Osaka now, but I hear the two of you are finally on the mend after everything that happened at the end of junior high. So I want to be friends with you too so we can form an unbeatable underdog social pariah trio that nobody can touch!”

~That seems like a plot device out of a bad doujin. Just how are you and Kairi-chan friends now?~ you ask, for the sake of appearances, even though you already know the answer.

Almost proud, she leans back and gives a self important laugh dripping with a certain amount of superiority. She really doesn’t know how to talk to people, does she think this makes her look cool?

“Fufufufu~ I spent a few weeks turned into a terrible awesome monster against my will,” her lanky arms bow out as her hands find purchase on her seemingly unpronounced hips, “Surely you noticed my absence,”

~No, actually,~ you point out, it deflates her a little as she resumes her customary slouch which otherwise conceals her kind of impressive height.
>>
>>41480963
“Well, anyway, Osaka-san was totally there when Sailor Moon,” she leans in after glancing left and right to make sure no one is paying attention to her, when she was laughing people seemed to be actively avoiding paying attention to her, “OUR Sailor Moon, not the new one. The one who used to save us all the time, anyway. Sailor Moon used magic and sexy vampire powers to bring me back to myself after a super tense interrogation of my monster half like out of a spy thriller or punishment game comic,”

Her embellishments of those experiences are both disturbing and endearing. She continues.

“Afterwards, Osaka-san wanted to talk to me and help me deal with having been a monster because of her experience in that skanky ring master outfit,” her hands grab the tops of her opposing shoulders as they rock side to side, “So now I have a totally awesome friendship built on the recovery from shared experiences!”

“I wouldn’t have called it skanky, Umeki-san,” Kairi chimes in with a sigh from beside the excitable and blushing social pariah.

“Eek!” Umeki-san gasps as she notices Kairi-chan standing there, rather unamused, “Ah, g-good morning Osaka-san,”

“Morning to you too,” Kairi turns to you, “Did she try to tell you about her fanfic yet or have I swooped in time to spare you,”

~Fanfic?~ you ask worriedly as Umeki-san smoulders in embarrassment.

“Nevermind,” she looks back to the lanky girl in a seriously but quiet voice, “Remember what I said about not spreading stuff around?”

“Yeah, but I thought Chiba-san was cool and junk with that stuff,” she finds her feet particularly interesting.

“Yes, but this isn’t really the place,” Kairi moves toward her desk and smiles at you apologetically, “We’ll talk about it later,”
>>
>>41481003

Well, that happened. Saori Umeki continues to stand beside your desk, somehow in defeat, mumbling to herself about failing to establish herself as a ringleader in the group’s social dynamic and that this stuff is so much easier in visual novels.

Most of the class has arrived at this point. You didn’t even notice Midori arrive and take her seat behind you, when you do she offers a quiet nod after first scanning the classroom.

“Alright, uh, I guess we’ll talk later,” Umeki-san grouses and turns to walk to her desk, but freezes as waiting to get passed her is Keiko Sugimoto.

“Good morning, Umeki-san, I haven’t seen you in class for a few weeks, is everything alright?” the popular girl and serial reincarnate asks the suddenly stricken and rigidly frozen girl.

Her voice is frozen in her throat as she tries and fails multiple times to find her voice. Being the understanding sort, Keiko turns to Midori and says good morning with a certain happy chirp which the blonde haired girl returns carefully and extremely self conscious. She then turns to you and offers you a good morning and a thank you for everything you’ve done. You respond in kind to your friend, as the lanky girl with more than two social problems becomes a bloodless sheet of slate. Keiko takes her seat ahead of you as the other girl’s frozen shock cracks and shatters. Umeki-san slowly makes her way to her desk, mumbling about how the most popular girl in school is on friendly terms with you and how she’s drowning in the deep end on the first chapter.

You feel sorry for the girl; perhaps later you’ll make her feel better by talking about doujin circle preferences that you might have in common, if Kairi’s complaint filled description of her room is to be considered.
>>
>>41481044

As most everyone has taken their seat, Yoshi Sakurada gathers some papers and steps up toward the front of the class next to the still absentee teacher’s desk. He clears his throat a few times, loudly, before speaking and projecting with particular volume to get everyone’s attention.

“Good morning everyone, I have a few announcements for class business before Sensei gets here to start homeroom,” he explains and then walks over to close the front of room sliding door into the hallway, leaving the primary entrance of late students as the door to the back of the class.

As he steps away from the door, surprising him enough to make him drop his papers, it is slammed open with considerable force by a particularly tiny individual.

“OFFICIAL UNOFFICIAL STUDENT COUNCIL BUSINESS!” bellows the tiny girl with a bob of dyed blonde hair as she steps into the room holding her homemade and bedazzled symbol of office above her head.

Student Council President Nui Takeda stands before your class. Her eyes dart about the room searching for something, settling on your side of the room against the wall, your row, and your desk. This does not inspire you with confidence.

“I need to speak with students Midori Mori and Mikage Chiba out in the hall,” she says plainly as she crosses her arms in a standoffish and closed body language posture to declare that the issue is not up for debate.

As you wonder what this could possibly be about, you dash the thought that it’s related to your dual identity as Miki because you highly doubt Takeda-san would have found out. What is the only other public thread that connects you and Midori? Keiko? That might be a safe bet, and if it has to do with Keiko it might have to do with the notation of warning you got. Maybe a stalker is passing them out to everyone Keiko spends time with? After what happened last time you had classes, you imagine Kairi might have gotten such a threat as well.

How would Teal even know about the notes? Did she get one because Keiko went to the meetup at the cafe that weekend? It might be why she seems so rattled, she works very hard to make sure her life and her Ganguro identity remain separate. She has made mention in the past that her family would never approve, they are very traditional.

Its actually a bit of a miracle that they let her dye her hair over the break.

It makes your blood boil, but you keep it in check as you quietly rise. Dipping your hand into the back pocket of your satchel bag, you grab the envelope and take it with you as you quietly make your way to the front of the class, Midori Mori following suit behind you. Teal, in all her exuberant micromanaging glory points to the open door as the two of you reach the front of the class. So directed she follows the two of you out and slides the door closed behind her.

“We’ll only be a few minutes,” she assures your class representative and then commands, “Carry on,”

“As you wish, President,” Yoshi replies in mild exasperation to these antics as she collects his scattered papers.

Nui leads you a few doors down, until you are outside the science lab classrooms that are usually empty for homeroom. It appears that Teal wants this talk in private.

“What’s this about, Nui-chan?” Midori asks after glancing at you, to which you shrug, as the smaller girl seems to vibrate with energy.
>>
>>41483693

“Something very very important, Midori-chan,” Takeda-san uncrosses her arms and comes to a stop right in front of you.

She is very short, so she seems to reach up on the tip toes of of her slippers as she tries to look you in the eye. Your beloved and glorious secret ganguro circle leader doesn’t even clear your chest, so she takes a step back to make this encounter less awkward for her.

She seems to be taking this issue rather intensely as she is about to launch into something, but you cut her off.

~I think I know what this is about, Takeda-san,~ you say with a worried timbre and present her the open envelope, ~This was in my shoe locker this morning, Mori-san did you get one too?~

“No, there wasn’t anything in my shoe locker this morning,” Midori’s eyes shoot open in concern as Nui opens the note within and her body language changes abruptly.

“Stay away from Sugimoto-san, Or Else,” the small senior student reads aloud from the note and bristles.

Her fingers tighten and crumple the edges of the paper. She composes herself and hands the note back to you, though taking a longer time to look you up and down and scrutinize your appearance before shaking it off.

“Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Chiba-san, I will not tolerate that kind of behavior among the student body. Rest assured I will have the disciplinary committee notified to investigate,” she says evenly before crossing her arms again, “but that isn’t why I called the two of you to the hallway today,”

“Then why are we out here?” Midori asks her friend again, “You said it was Official Unofficial Business, so why is she out here with us?”

She puts a certain emphasis on the word unofficial before she motions toward you at the query of your presence. Your heart sinks as you appreciate Midori trying to cover for you in what she must think is you somehow being outed.

“That depends, Midori-chan, did you already know?” Nui spins on her tip toes to face Midori and point an accusatory finger at her younger friend while her other hand snakes into her skirt pocket to draw out her cellphone and quickly tap in some screen unlock pattern, “You two have been in the same class since Junior High!”

Her finger hovers over the screen that is obscured to you.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Midori raises her hands and splays her fingers and a defensive pattern, “honestly,”

“Okay, I can accept that,” she turns back to you, returning to her inquisition after weighing the risk of something back and forth a few times in her head, “Chiba-san, are you Miki?”

Her finger is trembling above the screen of her cellphone, a trigger about to be pulled depending on your answer. What does she have there? Why is it even out? You can only catch a bit of the screen from this angle, and it isn’t a voice recorder app or video recorder app?

Your expression sours at the question. It upsets you that she made a whole production and show of trying to find out who you are. You step forward and look down at Nui Takeda, with a certain impassive fury engulfing you and then moving into the feigned space of calm.

~Teal, why are you bringing this up here?~ you grouse and cross your arms beneath your chest as you lean down to face her, ~I’ve never discussed you at school,~

She stares at you wide eyed and shocked.

“N-no way!” she reaches up and grabs your face with both hands, turning it slightly each way and leaning to the opposite side to inspect your profile, “It really is you?”

You loudly murmur her name through pressed cheeks as Midori pulls her away from you.

“Nui-chan,” she points out, “has a point, and she asked you a question,”

The small girl faces Midori as her eyes widen and then narrow at her, dubiously.

“Why aren’t you surprised,” she questions, “You did know!”

“Well it wasn’t my secret to tell and I only found out like a week ago,” Midori huffs, “If someone pressed me about you, I’d keep it secret,”

~Seriously,~ you nod to Midori, ~How did you even find out? I told Moe-chan yesterday, in confidence, I am so disappointed in her,~

The tiniest Teal looks somehow even smaller than normal, as she has the good sense to be embarrassed at the situation.

“Don’t blame Moe-chan,” she pleads, “We were texting last night and when she was telling me about your ghost hunt and what happened to her friend Momoko and the monsters and Sailor Moon, toward the end of it she wrote Miki when talking about you and claimed it was an autocorrect flub,”

~Oh?~

“I couldn’t let it go, because it was in katakana and not hiragana and the more I thought about it…” she explains, “I couldn’t get it out of my head and it started making sense. When I woke up this morning I couldn’t just sit on it for a week until the next time I saw you in makeup,”

“Then you could have PMed her on Lurk about it,” Midori scolds.

~She didn’t want something so impersonal for that big a question,~ you reason, ~I wouldn’t. Still, this is an abuse of office, how in the world is this school related?~

Midori turns to you and quirks an eyebrow.

“You really haven’t been paying attention to things here for a while, have you,”

~Not really,~ you shrug, ~I was in my own little world until that panic attack with Kairi before the Ninja attack,~

Nui Takedo offers a nervous and embarrassed laugh.

“I kind of abuse my authority all the time,” Teal shrugs, “Nothing serious, or even petty, just operationally. I still keep everything running smoothly so no one’s busted me yet,”

~Way to go you little Mussolini,~ you sigh and hold your temples, ~Though I am still upset,~

“Sorry, I had to know. It was a double life mystery, because I live one I really love trying to solve them, and I’ve been stuck on another so long that I had to jump on this one when it just made sense,” she draws her arms tightly to her core and pleads in a whisper shout.

Dear lord, it's like looking into a mirror!
>>
God, she looks so small and pathetic right now. Where is the girl who is usually shouting about the glorious ganguro revolution, and the revival of your sun kissed California fashion love?

No, you can’t stay mad. Your heart melts for her earnest clearing of Moe-chan’s name; the power lifter never betrayed you, she’s just a lunkhead. Well, you’ll have that talk with Moe-chan later. For now you will just have to forgive Tiny Teal because she is so perfectly miniature.

You honestly just want to pick her up and put her in your pocket.

~Teal-chan,~ you sigh.

“Miki-chan?” she looks up at you hopefully.

Stepping forward, you hug her into yourself. It isn’t anything like how you are used to forgiving hugs feeling. Honestly, you should probably step back and kneel down for this hug. Nui’s head comes to the base of your rib cage, your breasts resting oddly comfortably on top of her head.

Releasing her, you kneel down and hug her again. This time her head rests on your shoulder while your head rests on her opposite narrow narrow shoulder.

“Well,” Midori pops her hip, rolls her eyes, crosses her arms, and loosens her hold on her casual bitchiness, “This was certainly worth missing new classroom business,”

Without missing a beat you rise to your full height, lifting Nui off the floor with you, and the two of you pull her into the hug of reconciliation.

“NO!” she whispers loudly, “THIS IS NOT HUG TIME, STOP! RELEASE ME!”

The three of you break, Nui hopping down and landing in a crouch from this hug. Something strikes you as she smooths out her skirt and rights her posture.

~Wait a second,~ you say aloud.

“Eh?” Nui asks as you look down at her in scrutiny.

~Who the hell else’s double life are you trying to butt into, Nui?~ you ask her with a new assumed familiarity, using her first name.
>>
>>41489170

“Oh,” she clicks her tongue and makes a dismissive gesture, “Endo-chan. I’ve been trying to figure out what he’s been doing for months now since he started acting weird,”

“Months,” Midori questions, “Just how have you been investigating him?”

“Following him after class, cracking his email passwords, breaking into his storage locker,” she counts off on her fingers, “though he never leave his cell phone alone long enough for me to upload a tracker app into it,”

~Are you stalking your Vice President?~ you ask, shocked, ~What next, are you going to start going through his trash?~

“How the hell do you have enough time for that,” Midori asks, incredulously.

“I don’t do it all the time,” she huffs, “And besides, I couldn’t figure anything useful out from his trash,”

You and Midori share a concerned look.

“I almost had it on saturday,” she laments, “His van was sitting low on his tires, so I looked into the windows Saturday morning. It was full of big black cases and I thought he was running guns for the Yakuza, but when his van showed back up Sunday morning all the cases were still there,”

“Alright, that’s enough,” Midori starts pushing you away from Nui and down the hall, “Oh, Mikage, when Nui uses Official Unofficial Business, consider that code for circle business,”

~So noted,~

The two of you make your way back to the classroom. Not quite as much time had passed and it sounds like Yoshi is still going over class business. Luckily you aren’t late for class proper, and Sensei isn’t here yet. However both doors to the classroom are closed.

Midori Mori - Jade. Important parts of her backstory and trust in Mikage after the secret was revealed.
Nui Takeda - Teal, self proclaimed circle leader
Moe Ueda - Teen power lifter and teddy bear backpack/accessories enthusiast
Hanako Minami - Flowers. College student and bangle accessory enthusiast, unbeknownst to Mikage is the present timeline incarnation of Esmeraude of the Black Moon clan

You step toward the back door and slide it open. As you and Midori enter the room you shoot her a brief telepathic message.

-I get the distinct feeling that we’re going to have to be careful around Teal from now own,-

Midori telepathically groans about not believing that Teal went through Daigo Endo’s trash in response as she takes her seat and you cut the connection. While you return to your own desk, you notice that Yoshi is still at the front of the classroom going on about some fundraiser or food drive deadlines.

“And with that all out of the way,” he tucks the loose pages under his arms, “I would lastly like to report that both of the cards I obtained everyone’s signatures for were delivered and received in a prompt manner,”

With that finished, Yoshi goes back to his desk and room chatter resumes. Sensei hasn’t come yet to start homeroom and quite a few people are straying away from their desks to talk to one another.

You catch sight of the lone Saori Umeki staring confused and mumbling to herself about cards, you realize she would have no idea about that due to her time out of everyone’s memory. Kairi is shooting you and Midori a concerned look, probably curious about what happened with President Nui. Keiko is chatting with some of the other girls in the class who have started crowding around her. Gai is being a social butterfly, as is his way. Midori seems to be massaging her temples in frustration, probably concerned over the new strain of crazy your glorious ganguro leader has revealed about herself.

>Thank the class for signing your card, it meant a lot to you
>Talk to one of your friends openly, who and about what?

You rise slowly and make your way toward the front of the class where Yoshi sits. It isn’t the full and long talk you want, but it's a start and you want to get that much out of the way. Ever since your encounter with the Damned, your guilt and regret over Yoshi has managed to linger in your mind.

First though, as you pass her desk, your eyes lock with Kairi-chan. At the speed of thought you share with her the events of the hallway.

-Everything is fine, Takeda-san just knows I’m Miki because Moe-chan is all thumbs at texting,-

-Oh,- she responds and her concern melts away, -Look on the bright side, it means you have one more friend in your corner at school,-

-Maybe,- you reason, -but it feels like too many people too fast. Wish me luck,-

-What are you doing?- she queries when she realizes your destination.

-Something long overdue,- you sigh and break contact.

Everyone is mostly concerned with their own conversations, so no one besides Kairi is paying any attention to you. Yoshi is organizing his notes for first period in preparation of Sensei’s arrival.

You do momentarily notice something happen with the crowd around Keiko’s desk as the girl in question stands with a start toward one of her social hangers on.

“You take that back,” she says seriously as you attention fades, “she’s my frie-”

Its probably nothing important. Though it does draw enough of the attention of the rest of the class to make sure this moment with Yoshi is at least mostly private. In fact, he starts to turn at the sound of commotion, but pauses when he sees you.

“Chiba-san?” he asks in confusion at your proximity and perhaps the look on your face.

~About the other day, Sakurada-san. No, not just that. Whenever you tried to be there for me back then and I...~ you trail off and offer a shallow and apologetic bow, ~I’m sorry, I have reacted rather harshly. I am truly sorry I let myself get so cold,~
>>
>>41494190
There is a moment where you feel a certain sense of surprise and awe coming from the boy, but as you look up you find he has gone momentarily rigid. His eyes trail toward where your hands are held together low in front of you as you rise from your bow; they fidget under the memory of what has finally brought you to confront this matter, in part. You can practically hear the shattering of glass as a phantom pain plays across your knuckle.

He looks like he has found some of his words again and opens his mouth, but-

~You don’t have to say anything right now,~ you interrupt him, ~I want to talk more about this later, during the break. There is something else I have to do now, so please excuse me,~

-you aren’t so sure you have the emotional fortitude to react well to whatever it is he has to say in response to that apology. Time, you need time to gird yourself for it.

You take a few steps back from his desk and to the front of the classroom. This action does manage to draw the attention of a few of your classmates. You set about getting the rest of that attention.

~Everyone, I’m sorry to disturb you all this morning,~ you say in your most cheerful and happy voice while your discomfort and perhaps a bit of your sadness displays across your features, ~but could I please speak to all of you for just a minute?~

Whatever conversation is happening around Keiko dies off as the girls in question and the standing at argument Keiko herself regard the front of the classroom. Midori looks up from whatever it was she was busying herself with. Kairi’s attention seems to have been on you since you were speaking to her. Everyone else slowly turns to regard you who hasn’t already. After a moment, when you are certain you carry the weight of each gaze in the room, you begin.

~I want to thank all of you for signing my get well card,~ you begin a bit shakily, as someone who isn’t used to this much attention being on her.
>>
>>41477861
What?
~I’m sorry,~ you bow your head and shoulders as your hands find each other in front of you, ~You were right...I am projecting. Your story sounded very familiar, it got to me and I reacted rather harshly. I am truly sorry I let myself get out of control,~
>>
>>41494222

Honestly your ability to speak in front of a group is pretty damn great, but this is a calculated move. The other day, after your panic attack when you and Kairi embraced each other as friends and you rose to her defense, you shamed everyone for their behavior. Your passion and fire burnt through the darkness of panic as it closed in around you.

Today, you are carrying that home. You want to end the misconception of Princess No, you want to be Mikage Chiba again. To do that, you need to play to sympathy and appeal to basic human decency. For some people, you expect it is going to cause them to feel bad.

As far as you are concerned, that’s good.

~I’d been unconscious in the hospital for a few days when I woke up to find it at my bedside,~ you know as sure as the sun rising in the East that most of the class probably only signed the card because Yoshi made the rounds for it alongside Keiko’s get well card, ~Seeing that everyone cared about me, even though I’ve been nothing but trouble for all of you, it helped me feel better and meant a great deal to me,~

There isn’t an eye in the room outside of your immediate circle of friends that isn’t in the midst of serious sudden introspection or shock. Though somehow it feels like fewer eyes than you expect there to be seem to actually regard you humanly. There is still a certain coldness to the room. Odd considering the well sold performance you’ve given.

~Thank you all, truly, for helping me recover so quickly,~

In your mind you smile to yourself broadly while the nervous and sad faced girl you’ll play in this instance lowers her head and quickly makes her way back to her seat.
>>
>>41494255

Many eyes follow you back to your desk before returning their attention to where they had been before, though slower for it they take stock of themselves. At least, you imagine they are left with self critical thinking going on. Oddly enough, as you look forward to see the front door slide open and your teacher enter the classroom with his leather bound folder of papers, Yoshi’s eyes haven’t actually left you.

The expression on his face is strangely unreadable and stoic.

Alright, I'll go with Yoshi since that has the most votes, to make things extra decisive.
At least, we assume Power Cord is Yoshi.

Fair enough that he likely has strong suspicions. He doesn't have a magic disguise, and I'm thinking we can start putting things together if we see him and his friend together out of costume. That pair of body types.. black cases.. response from Yoshi. I will find a way to tease Mikage about it later if she doesn't
>>
I want to describe part of Yoshi's thought process, in part that there was a scene in which Yoshi dropped off Keiko's card and chatted with her a bit. He also spoke with Midori when he got her signatures.

Besides being aware that Mikage had been hanging out with the two of them over the break, he is aware that she has the physical acuity and skill to wrestle a bear AND he has been reminded that Mikage is family friends with the Aino's and got personally mandated by Venus back stage passes which she shared with Kairi, Midori, and Keiko.

Combine that with the apology he just got, along with the body language, Yoshi is questioning his understanding of reality.

Lest we forget that he also knows the little brown foreign kid is a friend of yours, who is locally internet famous for throwing down with the local urban legends and then grabbing MgRonalds with her.
>>
>>41500728
So, all of that kind of lined up in his head with that 20.

It wasn't just the apology's phrasing.
>>
>>41501119
So he’s worked out Mikage is the Beast?
>>
I find it to be a piece of amusing juvenile humor that Mikage can use Nui's head as a resting surface while standing. Midori was right, Mikage has become a titty monster.

So, Nui is obsessed with learning Daigo's secret. And they spend a lot of time together as part of the student council. Both lead double lives, and in both normal and secret lives the two of them are extremely contrasted. Does anyone else feel this should be a ship?
>>
>>41501210
Not 100%, I thought the fact that he was still staring at you after you thanked the class would have clued the players in to that, though.

He suspects to the point of near disbelief, and isn't going to make an outright accusation. What he does have is up until the apology circumstantial support evidence that he cannot ignore no matter how impossible it otherwise seems.
>>
>>41501343
I suspected that, but I wasn’t 100% sure
>>
>>41501729
Well, I look forward to writing the rest of this in game school day.
>>
>>41501119
I know, the phrasing is just one more thing to question his sanity over.

His mind wants to go around the rabbit hole he's about to fall down.
