You quickly and quietly walk back to your room. Since it is before breakfast, you don't encounter anyone on your way back. Quietly sliding the door open to your room, you see Ms Yamada is still peacefully asleep. She must have really enjoyed the massage you gave her last night. Meanwhile, Ms Orimura is no where to be seen. She must be an early riser. Quietly opening your luggage to find that the present you already bought is still pristine.

Either way, you don't want to make Houki wait any longer than you must. Holding the present in hand, you deftly tuck Ms Yamada back under her bed sheets.

Quickly walking back to Houki, you keep the present behind you.

“And what does that mean?” you ask again with a teasing tone.

“Tanabata festival is today.” Houki answers, sure that her answer is correct.

“No, think of something closer and more personal.” you reply, correcting her mistake.

“Well. It is also my birthday today.” Houki answers, some unsureness in her voice.

“Correct.” you say with a smile. “Happy birthday Houki.” you add while presenting the present in front of her.

At first Houki is completely surprised. Then her eyes start to water at the corners before she brightly smiles.

“Thank you John.” Houki says from the bottom of her heart as she takes the present.

“I hope you like it.” you reply with a smile as Houki opens the small present.

Inside she finds a long white ribbon for her hair and a a tie-on ribbon with two bells for her wrist.

“I remember that you used one of your hair ribbons before to as a makeshift bandage for me. So I thought this would be good for you.” you tell her. “And a girl always looks good in white.” you add.

With a swift movement, Houki pulls the ribbon to her high ponytail undone. Her long, silken black hair falls softly down to her shoulders. Houki having her hair straight down is also nice you think to yourself.

“And this?” Houki asks as she shakes the bells on her wrist.

“When I saw that, I thought it would suit you.” you answer honestly.

“Ah, I see. You have a good eye.” Houki says with a happy and confident voice.

“I am glad you liked it.” you reply with smiling.

“Now, I think it's time for breakfast.” Houki tells you, now with her confidence restored.

“Oh? To show off your present to everyone else?” you tease.

“Breakfast sounds good.” you state, “But this time, let's eat at the table.”

“Umu, causing a scene this early in the morning would not be good.” Houki replies, still holding onto your sleeve.

The both of you happily make your way to the dining hall. There are already quite a few of your fellow classmates sitting. You find an empty table as to avoid your legs falling asleep. You take a seat, with Houki sitting next to you. Soon after, Charlotte and Laura joins you at the table.

“Husband, you should ask Orimura-sensei to let you stay with us.” Laura demands as she sits next to you.

“I don't think she will allow that.” you comment.

“Laura, if John is stuck there. Then why not have him visit us.” Charlotte suggests.

“That might be fun.” you reply as you think about it.

“If you are out too late, the teachers would hunt you down.” Charlotte adds.

“That's if they found me.” you reply confidently.

All of a sudden the atmosphere went dim. Family problems seem to be in abundance here. You really need to curb this sort of attitude.

“That is why you need to tell us these things Laura. So we can spend it with each other.” you tell everyone. “After all, don't you want to spend that special day with me?” you ask, trying to lighten her mood.

“I do. I want to spend every birthday with you. I'll call Clarissa for the information.” Laura answers, a bit more cheerful.

“Good.” you reply, feeling the mood lighten a bit.

“It is bad to all be so gloomy in the morning.” Cecilia comments as she finds your table.

You scratch your cheek before you say, “The topic of birthdays came up.”

“Oh?” Cecilia asks as she takes a seat.

“Yeah, today is Houki's birthday.” you answer.

“Ah, Happy Birthday Houki.” Cecilia tells her.

“Thank you.” Houki thanks, now with a slightly improved mood.

You just shake your head with a slight laugh at Cecilia's reaction. Soon after, breakfast is served. The girls couldn't help but feel jealous at Houki's new presents. It was all they could talk about. All during breakfast they demanded you buy them something for their birthday, even Rin. Once you were all done, you had a little free time before some of the seaside classes started. You only had one thing in front of you, those mechanical ears. You just wonder if Cecilia, Charlotte, Laura and Rin would help or not.

After breakfast, you tell the girls,“You girls go ahead. I have something to take care of.”.

As they go back to their rooms to get ready for the water survival training class, you pull Houki aside.

“We still have that to deal with that.” you tell her.

“Right.” Houki replies with a slightly deflated tone.

The two of you head to the courtyard with those half buried mechanical ears. Standing in front of them, you both look down at them. Still untouched and waiting to be pulled. You reach down and pull both of the ears up. The ground gives up the pair of mechanical ears making you almost bump into Houki. A second later, you hear something above you. Houki and you look up to see something dropping almost directly on your position. You quickly grab Houki and pull her into your chest as you hide behind an inadequately small support beam.

The sounds of impacting metal and the rushing of wind and dust fill your ears as you hide behind cover. After a minute, the dust cloud departs to reveal, a orange metal carrot just where those mechanical ears.

“Are you ok Houki?” you ask, keeping Houki close to you for safety,

Houki coughs a couple of times before she replies, “I'm ok.”

Light laughter from an unfamiliar voice rings out as you hear the opening mechanism of the mechanical orange carrot split open. As the steam from the mechanical carrot dissipates, you see an energetic woman standing there.

“You're so mean Houki-chan. Making me wait all morning.” the woman says ever so energetically.

“Onee-chan.” Houki replies sheepishly as she stands up behind you.

Wait, she is Houki's sister her. That would mean standing in front of you is one of the most wanted scientists on the planet. Doctor Tabane Shinonono, the creator of the Infinite Stratos system. So this is Doctor Shinonono, well they certainly are sisters if their bust size is any indication.

Since Houki made a stand, you should support her in this. You can feel Tabane's glare begin to bore a hole through you. Behind you, Houki is tightly clinging to the back of your robe. You have to say something, something to help Houki out and tell the truth.

You can feel Houki slightly lean against you.

Houki releases her grip on the back of your robe and goes to your right side. She wraps her arms around your right arm bringing your arm against her body as she holds your hand with both of her hands.

“You can't Onee-chan. If you hurt John, I'll hate you forever.” Houki replies with slight panic in her voice.

“Don't worry Houki-chan, he's just an anomaly. An error in the system. And bugs are suppose to be removed permanently.” Tabane says with a light and calm tone.

“You can't.” Houki responds while holding you closer to her body.

This only seems to incise more annoyance from Tabane. Before Tabane is able to move a step forward, Ms Orimura yells out.

“Smith, just what kind of mess did you cause.” Ms Orimura yells out across the courtyard hall.

Then see sees the mechanical orange carrot. Ms Orimura shifts her gaze to Tabane, then at you, then back at Tabane.

“Oh.” Ms Orimura curtly replies.

“Chi-chan!” Tabane energetically yells out before making a headlong dash for Ms Orimura.

Tabane makes a mad dash for Ms Orimura before doing a jumping dive into Ms Orimura. Ms Orimura with a practiced motion grabs Tabane's head into an iron claw grip.

“I've missed you Chi-chan! Let's cuddle and hug to reaffirm our love!” Tabane happily yells out as she tries to reach out with her arms.

Ms Orimura grip only grows stronger with each word.

“You're annoying Tabane.” Ms Orimura replies to Tabane's desires.

“But your iron claw is still merciless as ever. I just want to hug you and smell you again.” Tabane says without any embarrassment.

Houki's squeezes you hand a bit at her older sister's words. You can see why Houki has issues with Tabane. I mean, it's not like having a family member attack you with a nuclear armed mech in anger. Not even Uncle Eli is that crazy.

“Tabane, why don't you go set things up.” Ms Orimura tells Tabane.

“Okay! But you'll hug hug me later.” Tabane replies as she deftly escapes Ms Orimura's grip.

“Things sort of escalated.” you answer Ms Orimura.

“Escalated?” Ms Orimura asks for clarification.

“Yes. When I was introducing John to Onee-chan, she didn't take it well.” Houki explains.

“I see.” Ms Orimura says as she accepts that answer. “She never did like other people.” Ms Orimura quietly muses.

At your room, Ms Orimura slides the door open. Thankfully Ms Yamada wasn't changing or anything inside. She was just going through some notes for class.

“Maya, Smith and Shinonono will be with me.” Ms Orimura tells Ms Yamada.

“Why?” Ms Yamada asks, worried about the sudden situation.

“A headache appeared.” Ms Orimura answers with a slightly sarcastic tone.

“Ok?” Ms Yamada responds, unsure of the answer.

“Smith, Shinonono. Get changed into your IS uniform and meet me back here when you do.” Ms Orimura tells you.

You and Houki nod. Houki lets go of your hand to head to her room. You grab your IS uniform out of your luggage and head to the men's bath changing room. It's one of the only places here that you can change without anyone trouble. You quickly change and head back to your room. Along the way you meet a couple of your classmates getting ready to assemble for their next class. Once back to your room, Ms Orimura has already changed to a track suit. Not much later, Houki arrives and the three of you head off to a rocky outcropping on the far side of the inn.

Waiting around for a couple of minutes, you easily hear Tabane arrive.

“Chi-chan, Houki-chan!” Tabane happily says as she goes straight for Ms Orimura.

Houki takes a step closer to you in response to Tabane. Ms Orimura just stands there implacable.

“Let's hug Chi-chan.” Tabane energetically demands while making lewd motions with her hips.

Being tired of Tabane, Ms Orimura tiredly allows Tabane to hug and rub against her. You can see a tired expression on Ms Orimura's face as Tabane's lights up with happiness.

“Tabane, focus. Remember what we are here for.” Ms Orimura tells Tabane.

“Yes, yes.” Tabane lets go of Ms Orimura and points to the sky. “Time for your present Houki-chan!” Tabane says with a big smile.

With her words, a whistling noise that reminded you of artillery comes crashing down in front of the four of you. A silver double-ended pyramid reveals itself after the dust clears. With a snap of Tabane's fingers, it breaks apart to reveal a red and white IS.

“Tada! And here is your present Houki-chan. A brand new, personal IS just for you, the Aka Tsubaki.” Tabane reveals with energetically. “This machine has been personally hand-crafted by me to exceed all currently existing IS capabilities.” Tabane explains with way too much energy.

You see Houki look on excited at such a present. You worry a bit about Houki in the back of your head. This is pretty close to getting an invulnerable flying tank as a present. It could get to your head.

“After all, Aka Tsubaki is a 4th generation IS.” Tabane finishes.

“A 4th generation IS.” Houki says to herself, amazed.

“Of course. I am a genius after all. Now let's get you fitted and personalized.” Tabane tells Houki.

“Go on, Shinonono.” Ms Orimura adds, letting Houki know it's safe.

Houki leaves your side to climb into the Aka Tsubaki. Once inside it, Tabane deploys a full array of holographic screen as cables are deployed from the base Aka Tsubaki is resting on. Tabane is swiftly entering a large amount of data into the Aka Tsubaki for the fitting and personalization process.

“I've already pre-installed some data in advance. So all that is left is to update to latest data.” Tabane informs Houki as she finishes the personalization process.

A moment later, all the cables detach from Aka Tsubaki.

“Fitting, done.” Tabane says out loud proudly, as she waves off the holo screens. “Isn't this great that it's me. Finished in a flash.” Tabane adds with a happy smile.

Houki nods in confirmation of her older sister's words.

“As a test, make it fly with just your thoughts.” Tabane instructs.

“Yes, I will.” Houki replies an instant before Aka Tsubaki takes off into the sky.

Houki quickly takes off vertically, completely free of gravity.

“That has to be as fast as the Maeve.” you mutter to yourself.

Houki starts flying and flitting through the clouds with ease. She flutters effortless through the sky. Tabane looks up proudly as Houki dances above her.

“What do you think Houki-chan? It moves just the way you want.” Tabane asks.

“Yes, it does.” Houki answers, a bit too enamored with her new set of wings.

The worry in the back of your head pops up again. You wonder if you should open a comm line to her to see how she is doing or you should stay silent and let Houki works this out with Tabane's help.

Seeing as this is something brand new to Houki, staying quiet to let her concentrate is the safest course of action. You stay quiet and let Houki steal the show.

“Let's try out your swords. The one on your right is Amatsuki, and the one on the left is Karaware. I'm sending you the data now.” Tabane announces over the comms as she feverishly types out on her invisible keyboard.

In the sky, Houki completely stops and floats within a split second. Next, she deploys two katana style swords in each hand.

“Amatsuki, ready?” Houki asks herself before she does a single clean swing in front of her.

Mid-swing, several red laser beams form in parallel to the glowing blade and fire off in a tight spread in the direction of Amatsuki's path. The lasers blow away all the clouds that were in the beams' path.

“Well, that certainly solves the melee range problem.” you quietly say to yourself.

“Amazing.” Houki mutters to herself, completely taken back by the power.

“Nice, nice.” Tabane nods to herself. “Now try intercepting these.” Tabane announces as a SAM launcher materializes next to her in a similar way an IS does.

Covering your ears, Tabane launchers nearly a dozen missiles into their designated target. Houki quickly reacts and gets up to speed, weaving and easily dodging the chasing missiles. You can't help but think this is a bit much for just getting a new IS. This only makes you worry Houki is getting ahead of herself and relying a too much on her new machine. You've seen people hurt themselves this way.

Up in the sky, Houki gracefully maneuvers until the missiles are all lined up.

“Karaware!” Houki shouts as she turns around to swing at the missiles.

The blade glows red and shoots off a large energy crescent in line with the blade. The energy crescent annihilates all the missiles with ease. The thunderous explosion confirms all of the chasing missiles are destroyed.

“Live munitions, that's a bit too much.” you mutter to yourself.

“Perfect isn't it, Houki-chan?” Tabane asks, besides herself with pride.

“It is. With this, Aka Tsubaki, I can now stand besides you.” Houki answers, you can hear the pride and amazement in her voice. “Why don't you join me up here John?” Houki asks.

“I think I will.” you answer as you look up to Houki in the sky. “Reinforce.” you say getting ready to deploy the Meave.

“Ready.” the prompt reads over your deactivated IS wristband.

The Maeve deploys flawlessly and you follow Houki up into the sky. You just hope you can calm her down from the excitement of her new personal IS.
