"Welcome back, my friend."

You're sitting in a dimly lit room, illuminated only by flickering torches lining the stone walls. You sit upon a wooden chair, beside which sits a table with a bowl of grapes on top of it. Across from you, and a few steps above you, is a throne, with an identical table and bowl of grapes beside it.

And, sitting on the throne is a humanoid creature in a black suit, with clawed hands and a head that looks quite a bit like a goat skull, even having a pair of curled horns sticking from it. He looks down at you, hands folded in his lap, and a smile on his face.

His name is Koe, and you recently decided to work with him after you were fired from your job as Spirit Detective by your boss, Koenma.

"I hope you enjoyed your day off," he tells you in a sincere tone. "Because, if you're up for it, I have a job for you."

"What kind of job?" you ask him.

"Well, I spent the better part of yesterday trying to find a suitable target you could attack to deal damage to Benjamin Disanto," Koe tells you. "But, he is a foe beyond your current ability to combat. On his own, he is a mere man, and not a very strong one at that. But he commands dangerous humans and demons alike, and confronting him now is beyond what you are capable of."

He retrieves a grape and eats it before continuing. "For now, we should focus on making you stronger. Kasai's training will surely be a great boon to you, but it will also take time that we do not have. So, I intend to help you grow more powerful more quickly by pointing you towards demons. They are dangerous creatures, some possessing great raw power, and others simply having dangerous abilities. I believe that, by combating them, your strength and fighting prowess will improve. With any luck, you might even learn some new techniques."

Koe smiles. "And, as it happens, I have a target in mind."

"So, a trail by fire, eh?" you ask. "Getting me some practice with some worthwhile opponents. Not just using me as your personal assassin, right? Be honest. You want these guys dead, and you want to keep your hands clean."

You reach in and grab some grapes, popping one in your mouth as you wait for Koe to answer.

"I didn't choose these targets at random," Koe admits. "Destroying them will help our goals in the long run. They could make the threat that much greater down the line, which is why it's best to eliminate them now, while they're isolated. But, the fact remains that destroying them will help you grow stronger, which we will need if we are to accomplish what we hope. So, we kill two birds with one stone, in this case. I think you'll agree that's a positive thing."

"I'm listening," you tell him, eating another grape.

"Thank you," Koe replies. "The creature I wish for you to hunt is known as Mahou, and he lives deep within a cursed forest. He traps the souls of his victims in the forest with him, twisting and torturing them for his own power and amusement. It will be a fairly long bus ride to reach him, but I can clear that with your father easily enough. And, of course, I do not ask for you to take a risk without reward. I expect you to grow stronger, but you will receive financial compensation as well. How does five hundred dollars sound?"

The fists are covered in spikes, as is the belt and the toes of the boots. And, to complete the outfit is a helmet that looks like a human skull, its "eyes" flickering with tiny flames.

Mahou possesses a vast array of powers. He can drain spirits to increase his own strength, or force them to attack you in an agonized rage. "Any known weaknesses?" you ask. "Anything I can take advantage of? Physical or mental? Any enemies near the forest I can work with?"

"Mahou has made many enemies over the centuries," Koe tells you. "But anyone who has attempted to challenge him has ended up dead. As far as I know, he doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. The power he draws from spirits allows him to unleash terrible attacks, and, even without that kind of help, he is physically powerful. Still, like most demons, he will likely not consider you much of a threat if he knows you're human. Perhaps his arrogance can prove his undoing."

"Is there any way to lure him out of the forest?" you ask. "Would that affect his powers?"

"He would not have as many spirits to draw power from," Koe says. "But, for this reason, he will not leave the forest. He has grown arrogant over the centuries, but not stupid. He knows that, without the spirits he has enslaved, he is much more vulnerable."

"Should I expect any other parties to be going after him as well?" you ask.

"Unless he's done something to draw the attention of Spirit World recently, I doubt it," Koe answers. "Bounty Hunters from the Spirit World and Demon World have pursued him in the past, but given how unsuccessful they were, most have given up on destroying Mahou."

"One last thing," you tell him. "I need to know if I can count on you to run interference if anybody finds out who I am. A demon got too close before, and I swear, it will never happen again."

Koe smiles. "I will do everything in my power to keep our enemies from attacking your loved ones. But, so long as you are discreet, that should be a non issue."

"Would it be possible for me to draw aid from spirits?" you ask Koe, still trying to find an advantage against your opponent.

"That's an interesting approach," he admits, thoughtfully. "It is a stretch, Mahou has worked hard to twist and torture the spirits into serving him. But, if you could find one or more that will turn against him, that could undermine some of his more powerful techniques. I wouldn't bank on it, but if you can make it work, then it could help you greatly."

"Do I have to worry about collateral damage?" you ask.

"I would suggest not burning down the entire forest, but you will be fighting a battle," Koe replies. "Do what is necessary to survive and win. Just remember, the more conspicuous you make your actions, the greater chance you make of gaining more enemies."

"Speaking of enemies, Koenma has a new Spirit Detective," you inform Koe. "Am I allowed to make friends? Even if they think I'm some sort of renegade? After all, the suit does make me look the part now."

"Having Spirit World as an ally rather than an enemy would be wonderful," Koe tells you. "But, should you cooperate with the Detective, I urge you to only reveal what is absolutely necessary. We have no way of knowing just what they will do with any information we give them, and if they choose to, they could prove a danger to us."

With your questions answered, you get up, heading out the door and walking down the long, narrow corridor. You come to another door, which leads out of this dark place. You open it, and awaken in your bed, looking over at your clock to see that it's eight in the morning.

With a yawn, you sit up, getting out of bed and looking around. Your closet door is open, and a small piece of paper sits on the floor just in front of it. You can hear your dad in the kitchen making breakfast.

Approaching your closet, you bend down and pick up the paper, which has a note written on it.

"Your suit is ready for use, but it's a tad conspicuous to be walking around in or carrying from place to place. So, I added an extra feature to it. You can say a simple word or phrase to call the suit, and it will appear on you. You may use a second phrase to remove it, or take it off manually, if you wish. "Gouki!" you shout.

Flames seem to envelop your body, covering you from head to toe before burning out. The flames first disappear on your feet, revealing black boots with spikes on the toes. The flames on your legs then vanish, revealing dark armor. This pattern continues all the way up your body, until it reaches your head, and those final flames burn away to presumably reveal your skull helmet. Your vision hasn't been effected by it, but when you look in the mirror, it seems as though a skull with burning eyes sits atop your shoulders.

"Ningen!" you shout.

Flames engulf your body once again, then begin to disappear, this time starting on your head and first revealing your face, then your shirt, then your pants, then your bare feet.

You've assigned two words to your suit, Gouki to summon it, and Ningen to remove it. You'll have to do your best to remember them.

Eh the thing is Lucy knows how to fight and was trained but no spirit energy if anything she had more potential than Bruce
>>
>>41467477
Everyone has Spirit Energy, she just isn't spiritually aware, and knows nothing about what you do.
>>
>>41467385
>B. Find Bruce

Just want to say goodbye to the friends before we leave doubt we're coming back the same day we leave
>>
>>41467385
>A. Go to the bus
>>
>>41467493
>knows nothing about what you do.

Why haven't we rectified that yet?

That's literally the oldest mistake in the book other than posting an image that is more interesting than the topic

Bruce already knows we should've filled her in to avoid that whole hey I just captured your unsuspecting best friend I gonna totally murder her unless X situation

Wait...
>>
>>41467554
I agree but just springing it on her would be a knee-jerk move, and her actually believing it is another matter entirely.
>>
>>41467432
>>41467460
Deadlock
>>
>>41467637
B.
Just a "heads up, if we die, agree with whatever our boss says"
>>
>>41467637
Well. I guess leaving a note to Bruce is fine, or hell just text him.

Wait. Do we even have cellphones in this setting or are we poor as shit and can't afford one?
>>
>>41467596
Well depending on how this mission goes we might have well enough reason to sit them both down and have the angels and demons talk

I think they're at that age
>>
>>41467460
Before leaving, you decide to talk to Bruce, and go looking for your friend. You go to his apartment and knock on the door, waiting a few seconds for him to open it.

"Hey man," Bruce says as he steps outside, closing the door behind him. "What's going on? We training today? There a good fight going on? Gonna finally tell me what you and Lucy were up to yesterday?"

>A. Tell him that you have to leave for work, and that you'll see him later

>B. Ask him to come with you

>C. Tell him you and Lucy were just jogging

>D. Dialogue writein

>E. Something else
>>
>>41467805
A
>>
>>41467790
Yeah. Plus our spiritual energy might be causing their own power to go into full bloom, ala Bleach style. So we may also need to tell them about spirit puberty.

>>41467805
D. "Actually Lucy and I were just jogging and talking about her upcoming tournament, but I've actually come to tell you I have a case. Got a demon I need to go hunt in the woods. Nasty stuff. So keep an eye on things for me. Report anything suspicious and stuff like that."
>>
>>41467805
>D. Dialogue writein
"Heading off to work, in the mean time for your training I want you to run Across town and back times, without stopping"
>>
>>41467805
>C. Tell him you and Lucy were just jogging
>A. Tell him that you have to leave for work, and that you'll see him later
Tell him we'll start training more soon
>>
>>41467840
>>41467842
These both work but add in something something be careful something something demons are bad news something something never accept a demons deal blindly something something motorcycles
>>
>>41467886
We should terrorize him while we're Goukiman and force him to train in extreme methods or we'll quote 'BURN HIS IMMORTAL SOUL!' unquote.

>>41467901
We should enlist Koe for a cool motorcycle if this mission is successful. So his agent of vengeance doesn't need public transportation.
>>
>>41467842
Fuck, forgot to add 10
>>
>>41467950
We're not ghost rider anon.
>>
>>41468043
Need some sort of transportation. What do you suggest then? A bentley?
>>
>>41468072
Public transportation?
>>
>>41468072

A 007 James Bond style car with all types of crazy spirit devices built into it.
>>
>>41468072
Muscle Car or if we can find one a flaming spirit horse

Either or

Hell why not both
>>
>>41467886
>>41467842
>>41467840
"Lucy and I were just jogging," you assure him. "But I'm here to tell you that I'm heading off for work."

"Work? I thought you got-oh, right," Bruce replies. "That demon guy gave you a mission or something."

You nod. "I have a demon to hunt in the woods. I want you to keep an eye on things while I'm gone, call me if you see anything suspicious."

"Like what?" Bruce asks.

You shrug. "And, while I'm gone, I want you to run across town and back ten times without stopping."

"Are you nuts?!" Bruce asks. "There's no way I can do that!"

>A. Fine, just run across town and back once without stopping

>B. Not with that attitude

"Kaya made me run a lot more than the amount I'm giving you, not to mention she threatened to smack me with her oar every time I stopped."

"Just try to push past what you think you can do, you might surprise yourself," you tell him.

"Dude, ten times without stopping?" he asks.

"Kaya made me do a lot worse, and threatened me with an oar," you tell him.

"Well, you don't have an oar," Bruce points out.

"Yeah, but you don't want to know what I do have. So, just do it," you reply.

Saying goodbye, you head over to Lucy's apartment, knocking and waiting until she answers the door, dressed in her pajamas.

"Hey, what's up?" she asks, stepping outside and closing the door behind her.

>A. Tell her you're leaving for work

>B. Tell her you haven't been entirely honest with her, and need to explain some things

"I'm heading off to work and I'm making Bruce run 10 times across town without stopping, mind checking on him to make sure he is doing it. It's required for training purposes, he wants to work at the same place I do, but theres a bit of an endurance test req to get in"
>>
>>41468423
"I'm heading out of town for a while on a job just wanted to let you know before I leave. I also may have not been entirely honest with you and there's some things we need to talk about when I'm back."
>>
>>41468423
>B

Time for a Cassandra Truth.

"Y'know the job I told you about? Well I actually worked under the King of Hell's son Koenma as a Spirit Detective, but because I disobeyed him I was fired and now gain employment under a dubious demon lord who may or may not be using me to expand his own personal power base. Also I've got this super cool suit that I would show you but I don't want to make a scene in the middle of town. ... You don't believe a word I just said did you?"

Lucy blinks "Uh...okay. I'll be sure to watch out for him. Good luck at work. I'll see you when you get back."

Smiling, Lucy heads back inside, and you head for the bus.

>To be continued

This chapter is over, next thread will either be tomorrow, or sometime in the next few days. Follow me @qmdralo to see when new threads are up

I'll answer questions here for a while
>>
>>41468716
For whom does the bell tomes?
>>
>>41468716
I love you Som. Do you love me?

Also serious question, would we be able to learn the spirit sword technique in the future?
>>
>>41468723
It tolls for thee.

>>41468735
Yes

I kind of want to say no, because that's always sort of been Kuwabara's thing. But, I guess we'll see.
>>
>>41468762
Oh okay. Maybe a variant then, like...well Spirit Chains would just be another thing from Ghost Rider we stole but we could make a variety of weapons with spiritual energy and maybe even combine it with our fire power.
>>
What does the suit do?
>>
>>41468762
So wheres Kasai at? Doing fire demon things?
>>
>>41468799
Offers some protection, looks cool.

>>41468814
Pretty much, she'll come back when she thinks you're ready for the next step of training.

>>41468797
Maybe
>>
>>41468833
So is the new spirit detective doing their first case right now?
>>
So I guess from here on, every time were out on a job and come across the new Detective while we are geared up, we'll just rush in, beat the shit out of demons and leave.

Eventually the dude will ask "What the fuck breh?" and we can totally pull the "Mysterious stranger" card.

And then we get to buy a .44 magnum and be a total fucking badass.

Besides, trying to establish that you're a good guy the first time you see someone who is there to kill demons, while dressed up like some hellspawn dude probably won't look very trustworthy.

We could be the Skull Knight to the Spirit Detective's Guts!
>>
>>41468985
I'm just expecting the spirit detective to spirit gun us by mistake when we take a big shot demon out. Them entering the scene and seeing John in the suit standing over the corpse.
>>
>>41468985
>Besides, trying to establish that you're a good guy the first time you see someone who is there to kill demons, while dressed up like some hellspawn dude probably won't look very trustworthy.

Well considering the guys we are about to take on are confirmed bad dudes that shouldn't matter much

Then again I don't know if we can trust the word of literally notSatan
>>
>>41468926
Yep
>>
>>41469033
I think we've made it clear we know he's using us, but since our interest line up its more of a question of whether or not what his plans are the lesser of the two evils that may overwhelm the world. Hell he could be behind both events, and we may have to end up fighting him in the end. Koe is probably an A or even S class while we're barely D class.
>>
>>41469036
So considering we work with Koe are we going to run into Hiei and Kurama later on when we get stronger demons to fight?

Look at it from a Detective's point of view

>get told bad demon here
>go there, bad demon, and other demon fighting
>whichone.jpg?
>just let them fight and kill the survivor

We don't want to antagonize the spirit world any more, really.

>>41469021
>muh dick
>>
>>41469115
I think by the point we run into the spirit detective, John would probably be able to turn himself into fire to vanish
>>
>>41469203
I'm not seeing that.

Since the first time we see him will probably be within the first few jobs we do for Koe, I bet, and we're still a complete scrub at fire stuff.
