You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you were touring Lord Artois' castle, which was just as large and extravagant as you expected to be. It wasn't quite to the level of the King's castle, but it was still impressive enough, dominating a large open plain dotted with rolling hills. Perfect horse country, you suppose.

However, you weren't thinking about castles or fields or horses. In front of you was a literal marvel of engineering. A Vertical Tank clad in silver armor, bright enough to actually blind you if you looked at too hard. In addition, hanging from it were all sorts of banners and pennants of various colors and symbols, no doubt celebrating past victories and triumphs. With the complete package, it certainly did look like a knightly steed.

On its turret, you could see an oddly stubby cannon, with an extremely wide bore. If you had to guess, it had to be at least 125mm. Maybe it was some kind of mortar or assault gun? You couldn't be quite sure. However, what really drew your attention was a large lance mounted on the side of the hull, jutting out in front of the tank.

"Do... do you actually use that?" Alfie ask softly as she points to the weapon.

"Of course!" Willem laughs, his chest puffing with pride. "The contact lance is our traditional weapon of choice, after all! No knight would ever go into battle without one!"

"Interesting..." Parker nods as she examines the weapon. "It looks like it's made of wood, though. Do you have a weaponized version?"

"Of course!" Willem nods. "The combat version is made of steel, with a shaped charge explosive tip that fires upon contact."

"Interesting." Parker murmurs.

"Wait, but doesn't that mean you've got to get into close combat with them?" Bannon asks incredulously.

"Of course!" Willem replies happily as if it were completely normal. "You don't fight like that?"

"That's crazy!" Bannon yelps

"That's awesome!" Axel says at the same time.

"That's freaking badass!" You say with a stupid grin as you look up at the lance. "So like, how exactly do you get close enough to use them?"

"Well, we still use ranged weapons to some extent." Willem explains, pointing to a number of large weapons laying to the side, which looked to ready to be bolted on to the VT at any moment. "We make liberal use of smoke, rockets, and recoilless rifles to suppress the enemy while we charge. It may not look it, but our steeds are VERY fast."

"With all this armor?" Tarin raps her knuckle against the shining VT's leg. "This is easily almost heavy-VT grade plate."

"Well, we only pay for the best armor and propulsion." Willem smiles. "Once you gain a knighthood, you have a steed personally built for you. As was said before, no one steed is identical to the other. They are all built to the user's specifications."

"That's gotta play merry hell on your logistics, though." Rock points out.

"Every knight is expected to be able to maintain their own steed. If they cannot, well, they would not be a knight otherwise." Willem points out.

"So in other words, rich." Alex summarizes.

"That's a crude way to put it, yes." Willem concedes.

Breton logistics sounds like a punishment detail. You have a hodgepot of unique VTs, most likely no interchangeability of parts, deliberate usage of different ammunition between Knights and definately some special over engineered systems that need a specially trained maintenance crew.
Sounds like a mix of clan, ww2 japanese and german logistics. God just aim for the maintenance crew and watch as they break down after the next few battles
>>
>>41465883
I think they have a few common parts that the peasantry use. Then we get to possibility that Men at Arms could own a VT.
>>
>>41465883

>clan, ww2 japanese and german logistics

Huh. I wonder if they invented some sort of Omni-pod or similar modular weapon technology for their VTs, given their love of customization and all that.

"So, so, what's the kind of doctrine you use? Supporting units? Main weapons?" You ask enthusiastically.

"Ah, well, you see, squires like me actively support the knights with lighter, mass produced steeds." Willem says, pointing to the side where you can see three light, open topped VTs. For two of them, you see what looks to be large racks of tubes, no doubt recoilless rifle barrels. The third seemed to have some sort of crane arm for loading and off loading.

"I take it you use them for hit and run tactics?" Parker asks, looking at the light VTs with some appreciation.

"Yes, and to engage anything too fast for the knights to handle on their own." Willem nods.

"What about the third one?" Tarin asks, pointing to the crane armed VT.

"Ah, that's the one the knight's most favored squire pilots. Obviously, contact lances are one use only, so when it's exhausted, a squire will come and reload it."

"In the middle of a battle?!" Bannon blinks incredulously.

"Well, of course! It is a great honor to serve in that position!" Willem says proudly. "To personally tend to your lord's needs!"

"How about infantry?" Rock joins in. "Seems like you guys aren't the type to fight on foot."

"If they are needed, we call up the men-at-arms. The peasant class are expected to fight for their lord when the times, as well." Willem says.

"Something tells me they don't get the same fancy stuff the knights do." Alex murmurs.

Probably very low ratio of tanks/other shit in their military. Heavy reliance on large groups of conscripted infantry in real battles while the nobles mostly wave their dicks and avoid getting too close to the front except to duel other fops.

Maybe even some gentlemen's agreement bullshit where they don't issue good AT weapons to the infantry because it wouldn't be proper sporting old chap

"How about the cannon?" You point to the VT's stubby main cannon. "What exactly does it fire?"

"Flying lances, of course!" Willem grins. "When the knight fires it, a squire inside the VT can control its direction and trajectory, so that no enemy can escape justice!"

"Barrel launched missiles. Interesting..." Parker mumbles. "You know, it would beneficial if such technology-"

"I'm sorry, but that is not something we can share." Willem says quickly. "I hope you can understand."

"Of course." Parker sighs.

"Anyways, I think we have dallied here long enough!" Willem spins on his heel. "I shall show you to the training grounds! Lord Artois shall be waiting there for us!"

You and your platoon follow Willem farther out into the field surrounding the Artois castle, where you see a large, flat and cleared dirt square on the ground. You see two rather plain looking VTs standing at either end, lances already fitted on to them. Obviously training versions.

"Welcome, to where the fate of Breton has been continually decided." Lord Artois steps forward. He's no longer wearing his fancy noble finery, but now a simpler riding suit. However, you can tell it's made from a much finer and more expensive material than what your standard issue uniforms are made of. You guess no matter how humble they presented themselves as, Breton lords would always be in another class of wealth.

"Thank you for hosting us, Lord Artois." Bannon says somewhat awkwardly as he salutes. "We hope we won't disappoint you."

"We shall see." Lord Artois paces back and forth, eying all of you with a scrutinizing eye. "You are all trained and forged in the fires of war, and that is good! However, you must remember that right now you will be competing in a contest, not fighting a battle! As such, there are rules to be observed!"

Lord Artois then stops in his tracks right at the foot of one of the training VTs.

"A standard joust involves two steeds charging at one another. The object is to score a direct hit on your opponent with the lance, while preventing your opponent from doing the same. A direct strike, shown by breaking your lance against your opponent, will automatically earn you one point. A glancing hit that does not break the lance will earn you no points! The first contestant to reach three points is the winner! In the event that you manage to knock the enemy VT off its feet, that will be an immediate win! Are there any questions?"

"Um, question." Axel raises his hand. "How exactly do you knock a VT on its ass with a wooden lance?"

"Well, you should know this by now, but steeds can be very unstable when moving at full speed. If you hit in the right spot, such as directly in the center or at the legs, you could potentially knock it over or trip it up. Naturally, this is a difficult move to achieve, and total knockdowns are rather rare."

"Interesting." Tarin murmurs.

"Now, that is enough talk. It is time to train! We must ensure you are all ready to face Lord Sylvan's weasels!" Lord Artois points to the VT. "Now who will be the first volunteer?"

"We'll go first, sir." You say as you raise your hand.

"Ah, excellent." Lord Artois nods appreciatively and turns to Willem. "Willem, do you mind being their opponent for the day? I don't want to be TOO hard on them on the first go."

"Right away, milord!" Willard bows obediently. He then waves at a couple more squires milling about and they dash for the VT on the far end.

"The control scheme should not be too different from your own steeds." Artois says as you and Tarin climb up the boarding ladder. "After all, many of our building techniques were based off Tilean models."

"We'll keep that in mind, sir." You nod as you open up the hatch. You let Tarin drop in first before following her in. Immediately, Tarin's hands are crawling all over the controls and dials as she tries to familiarize herself with the layout.

"He's right. It's a bit cruder, but it's not all that different from a Wolverine." Tarin says. "I think I can work with this."

"Yeah, it looks familiar." You agree as you examine your commander controls. Obviously, there were no controls for any weapons, considering you were in a training model, but you did see controls to manipulate the angle of lance mounted on the side. You guess this was how Breton lancers "aimed" their attacks.

"I'm turning it on." Tarin warns as she hits the ignition key. The VT roars to life, similar to your Wolverine. Across the field, you can see Willem's VT rumble and barf out a cloud of thick black smoke. In the center of the field, Lord Artois stands his armed raised in the air.

"So how do we handle this?" Tarin says as she stares at the opposing VT like a hawk. "You think we can do this?"

"Go full tilt, Tarin!" You yell. "We'll knock these guys on their asses!"

"Roger that." Tarin says. You see Lord Artois bring down his arm in a chop, signifying that it was time to start. Immediately, Tarin pushes the throttle to send the VT forward at full speed. The machine lumbers forward as Willem's VT does the same, its lance pointing menacingly at your face. You instinctively try to hit your nonexistent trigger to fire your nonexistent gun before remembering that wasn't an option. You instead attempt to "aim" your lance to hit at the right spot.

>FATE POINT GAINED
>You have 1 point!

As you close the distance with your opponent, you try to keep your lance level and still, trying to compensate for the bouncing your VT was going through. There's a loud CRASH as your lance strikes home, the tip slamming directly into Willem's VT. You feel your VT slow down momentarily as the lance strikes, but it's only for a fleeting second when your lance bends past its limits, snapping like a very large toothpick.

At the same moment, your own VT shudders and you hear a loud screeching sound as Willem's lance strikes your VT's hull and drags itself along your hull. However, the lance doesn't break, and slides right off you hull like it was coated in butter.

"The point goes to the Tileans!" Lord Artois bellows.

You pop out of the hatch and thrust your fist into the air in victory. Down below, you see Axel cheering and whooping like a madman. The rest clap enthusiastically except for Bannon, who just silently watches with that usually slight scowl of his. It seemed like the guy never enjoyed ANYTHING.

"Now, normally, that would just give you a single point, but you did very well!" Lord Artois yells up to you. "You can try it again, or maybe you could give your comrades an opportunity to try?"

"Yeah, let's have everybody else get a go!" You nod as you pull yourself out of the hatch. "It's really.. different. You should really give a try, sir!"

"I suppose so." Bannon grunts.

You watch as Bannon and Parker load up in the VT while a team of squires remove the shattered lance and replace it with a fresh one. They do the same to Willem's as well. You suppose that even though it wasn't broken, the impact may have weakened it.

"So, what's your bet?" Rock asks as you watch Bannon and Parker load up in the VT. "They gonna win or are they gonna blow it?"

"I'm not sure." You shrug.

"Well, Parker is a quick study and she learns very quickly." Tarin remarks. "I think in some ways, she's probably the best driver out of all of us."

"Yeah, but they have Bannon controlling the lance." Alex grunts. "He's... never been the best under pressure."

"Honestly, he's lucky he's had Parker stick with him all this time." Rock chuckles and turns back to you. "So how about it, kid? Let's make a little bet. Our chocolate rations on the line to guess the winner!"

"I dunno..." You frown, and notice that Tarin was now standing a lot closer. Her interest was obviously piqued.

"I think Bannon and Parker will score." You say as you watch the VTs rest on each end of the training field.

"Oooooh, being brave about it. Okay, I'll play along." Rock grins.

Once again, Lord Artois signals for the joust to begin. Bannon and Willem's VTs charge at full tilt. However, right as they're about to make contact, you see Bannon's VT twist slightly at the very last second. Willem's lance head skips off with a loud CLANG, while Bannon manages to almost miraculously break his lance against the side of Willem's VT, sending wood fragments flying everywhere.

"Yeah!" You whoop, partly because you're happy to see your "side" win, and also because you just doubled your chocolate ration.

"Aw damn, guess that's what I get for being a habitual gambler." Rock sighs and hands you a few chocolate bars.

"You're lucky they won." Tarin says softly in your ear as she snatches a few bars before they can even touch your fingers.

"Ahehehe, I totally knew they were gonna pull it off." You try to assure her.

"Uh uh. I'm sure." Tarin says, unconvinced as she starts casually unwrapping one of the bars.

"Aw jeez, just rub it in my face and eat my own candy bar in front of me." Rock groans.

"You brought this on yourself." Tarin says simply as she takes a bite.

Next up is Rock and Alex. However, they only manage to tie with Willem, with both crews breaking the lances on each other. After that is Axel and Alfie's turn. However, right at the start, you notice something amiss. It takes a little while for Axel and Alfie's VT to get going. You suppose it's because Alfie isn't used to aggressive driving, due to her timid nature and since she normally drives a slower version of the Wolverine.

"Oh no, that's not good." Tarin frowns.

"It looks like they're going to-" Parker starts but never finishes.

You see Willem's lance slam dead on into Axel and Alfie's VT. Alfie doesn't even make any attempt to dodge or mitigate the blow, and Willem has enough momentum to actually lift Axel and Alfie's VT off its feet and the entire vehicle topples over and lands on its back.

"Cease! Cease!" Lord Artois barks as Willem's VT screeches to a halt.

You and the rest of your platoon are already sprinting to the downed VT. However, Willem beats you there, scrambling out of his own VT and pulling the hatch open. A dazed Axel crawls his way out.

"Goddamn, that was rough." He groans as he clutches his head.

"Where's your driver?" Willem asks, concerned.

"Probably still inside." Axel rubs his eyes. "Don't worry, she probably just freaked out over the hit. She'll come out on her own eventually."

"Go away!" You hear her whimper from within.

"It's not safe to leave her in there. We'll have to get her out." Willem says, obviously concerned.

"All right, we gotta get her out." You sigh as you crouch near the open turret hatch. "Hey Alfie, come on out."

"N-no! I s-screwed up!" Alfie wails from inside.

"Aw jeez." You shake your head. Alfie was definitely in one of those moods again. You turn to Tarin. "We may have to use the big guns."

She defensively twists away, keeping her newly appropriated chocolate out of your reach.

"Use your own." She glowers.

"Goddamn, that's cold." Rock laughs.

"Fine, fine." You sigh as you grab one of the fresh bars you had gotten from Rock and wave it in front of the hatch opening. "Come on, Alfie, you gotta be hungry at this point. Why don't you come out and we can have this nice chocolate bar?"

You see Alfie carefully poke her head out of the hatch like a gopher, and that's when Tarin strikes, grabbing the girl by the collar and physically hauling her out.

"Eeeeep!" Alfie shrieks.

"Honestly, you're so much trouble sometimes, Alfie." Axel sighs.

"B-because it's my fault!" Alfie whimpers.

"That's BS and you know it, Alfie." Axel retorts.

"Are they always like this?" Willem asks.

"Yes." Both you and Tarin say at once.

"Willem, you tend to that downed crew." Lord Artois says. "The rest of you, follow me. There is more I must show you."

You decide to leave the twins to sort out their issues themselves and follow Lord Arois as he leads you down a dirt path to reveal more of the training grounds. You see what appears to be a firing range as well as some sort of fighting ring.

"In addition to jousting, we have other events in the tournament. Dueling, small arms marksmanship, and cannon marksmanship." Lord Artois explains. "While they do not carry the prestige or popularity of the joust, they do still contribute to overall victory. It would be best to try and divide your crews up to certain events.

"Can you explain more?" Parker asks.

"Dueling," Lord Artois motions to the fighting pits. "Involves fighting another opponent in full plate with melee weapons. Blunted, of course, to prevent injury and death. I suggest using your most physically capable soldiers for this event. Small arms marksmanship is just that, firing at targets with rifles with the most accurate shooter winning. Obviously, you would want your best shots on that event. Finally, the cannon marksmanship event requires a good VT crew to work together to eliminate a number of targets as quickly as possible."

"Oh, sounds simple enough." Parker nods.

"Now, which event would you like to try?" Lord Artois asks.

"I see." Lord Artois nods and then looks to the sky, which was now starting to turn to a dull orange. "However, it appears to be getting dark. Perhaps we shall wait for a later time? Or would you like to make a demonstration now?"

"Maybe we shouldn't push ourselves today." Tarin says. "It's the first day, after all."

"Yeah, you're right." You nod in agreement. "Let's stop for the night. We can practice later.

"If that is your wish." Lord Artois nods. "Then we shall end things here for now. You are free to do what you wish, but please do not leave the castle grounds, both for your safety and my subjects' safety.

"Got it. We'll stay put." Bannon assures him.

"Ah yes, there is one other matter." Lord Artois pauses. "In a few days time, the King will hold a royal ball to celebrate the official start of the tournament season, and the major players are expected to attend, including you all, if you wish."

"Hmmmmm, formal functions aren't exactly my thing." Rock sighs. "Do we really have to go?"

"You will get acquainted with the other lords and possible competitors." Lord Artois points out. "And the Reiklanders are sure to attend as well."

"Well, as the commanding officers, me and Bannon will definitely be going!" Parker announces.

"Of course." Bannon sighs.

"That means you guys will only need to come if you volunteer." Parker gives you a sly grin. "But who knows, maybe you can woo Reiklander's representative. She seemed quite taken with you!"

"I'm sure." You laugh. "All right, we're in."

"Excellent. I will inform the King." Lord Artois nods. "Then you all should get some rest while you can. Your training will not be easy."

As you are led to your rooms by one of Artois' servants, you're briefly stopped when Tarin tugs at your sleeve.

"Roy, I have a question to ask." Tarin asks softly. "That Hess girl... do you like her?"

"Yeah, I get some bad feelings about him in particular." Tarin nods. "That Hess may not be a generic evil Reiklander, but he definitely is."

"Yeah, well, we'll deal with when it comes." You pat her playfully on the head. "I guess that's one advantage with this ball. A chance to get to know our enemy better."

"I suppose." Tarin nods as she bats your hand away. "Just promise me you'll be careful, all right?"

Breton's supposedly militaristic society seems to be primarily based on archaic traditions. In a real-ass war with a peer state their fucked up logistics situation would likely render their armored units combat ineffective very quickly. So:

Where does all the money come from? Natural resources, agriculture, previous wars?

Do they have a more conventional and effective strategy to fall back on in the event of actual war or is melee combat with tanks as good as their plans get?

Why is Sam consistently the best girl?

Traditionally, Breton has been successful due to just being extremely damn mobile. They employ heavy blitzkrieg style tactics, with knights smashing holes in defensive lines while squires and men at arms exploit the gap. Logistics is usually not that big of a deal since every lord is expected to be self sufficient. Think of it as multiple smaller armies instead of one large one.

Also, Sam is the epitome of fembro.

Oh yes, I've definitely been brewing up a fantasy setting for a future quest. I've been building an entire folder of potential art for it, in fact!

As for Kancolle, that one was also in the works long before Kant-o-celle, though I never had the time to start it. It's going to put a lot more focus on western ships, though!

Headcanoned list of things Karla did while drunk.

>Become an internet pop idol by singing and dancing
>Sneak into R&D and take a top secret next gen flight uniform
>Aquired 50 Nugget plushies of various sizes for Amy
>Somehow ended up in a maid outfit
>>

woah dudes, it's like you don't want to cuddle a tiny smug woman. shit taste
>>
>>41487834
tiny girls are fine if they don't look like they are 14
>>
Hey Merc, sorry I couldn't catch this or ACQ this week, I've been super busy. I do have a question for you:

Why do you have so many bestgirls?
>>
>>41487725
>Did some sweet aerial acrobatics in her F-16
>Subsequently shot down an OB recon plane with a stray missile fired while performing said moves.
>NTR'd Tarin
>NTR'd anyone with a relationship with someone in her unit
>Became the famed pilot-pimp of the round table.
Am I missing anything else?
>>
i still want to know if BJ Blaskowits is gonna show since we have such a "happy man" as an enemy.
>>
>>41487725
>Not wearing the top secret skintight uniform while performing for the internet and wearing it underneath the maid outfit.
>>
>>41487996
Depends, do we have giant fling bombers and do the Reiks have giant mechs (VTs not counting)
>>
>>41487996
>on mission
>not kicking ass
>feelsbadman.jpg
>enemy is winning
>lone soldier running towards the enemy with a bunch of explosives and AT weaponry
>hear outside of our VT someone shouting about that man being "Fuckin' immortal!"
>dude proceeds to get shit done

BJ is more a plot device than man, far too powerful
>>
>>41487152
IDK, Like with Karla their might be several variations in which she may or may not have certain characteristics.

Good threads do tend to last for a while.
>>
>>41471504
Thanks for running, Merc. I wasn't able to participate this time, but it's still a good read. You put a lot of time and effort into your threads, and it is appreciated even if work calls some of us away while the threads are active.

Pic related.

>>41487152
Not bad. Let's see how she performs in a VT, then we can think about subverting her to our side. After all, we need to start building an effective, multicultural party so that we have a broad range of skills to choose from when we:

>A) Get access to larger or fancier VTs that require additional crewmembers to operate.
>B) Suffer casualties and have to swap out crewmembers while Tarin recovers.
>C) Push through the equivalent of the Omega Relay on Mass Effect 2's Suicide Mission and have to rely on a solid party of hardened, plot-armored characters to accomplish the inevitable party-splitting sub-missions beyond it.

>>41488063
We'd better bank up plenty of Fate Points, just in case we need to call in a true-blue hero who's not afraid of drowning Nazis in their own pee.
>>
Oh shit, almost forgot!

For the tournament, we need a Lady's Favour! Maybe Tarin can tear off a sleeve or something.
>>
>>41489280
Much as I will like that, Tarin is riding with us. Not sure if that counts.

>Tarin taking advantage of Roy in a VT when he is distracted when?
>>
>>41491387
I just hope they clean out the VT BEFORE they get it on. Do you realize how unhygienic it is to do it in there?
>>
>>41491410
>"Wow, it looks really nice in here, Tarin. Did you clean it overn- T-Tarin, what are you doing!? TARIN STAHP!"

>Tarin

I don't believe you. What is the worse she ever done? Besides hand holding?

>I don't believe you. What is the worse she ever done? Besides hand holding?

It's always either the ones that are openly lewd.

Or don't appear lewd at all.

Like that quiet kid in the back of the class who keeps to himself who can break every bone in your body and you just think he's some scrawny loner.
>>
MGHQ School Days with Carol Oneshot when?
>>
>>41492435
Maybe Cole can be a superpowered villain that becomes befriended by Carol (AKA beaten the crap out of, but spared)?
>>
>>41489280
She'll tie her panties to the turret controls
>>
>>41491811
Now we have to see a Lewd Tarin, and must deliver.

also I'm kind of surprised Janice was in the top 5 a bit, was it because Pierce unlock her hidden freak?
>>
>>41492745
Did you ever read the pastebin lewds of Janice?

So Merc confirming Tarin is a freak?
>>
>>41496426
I guess so, since she's ranked one of the top 5 lewdest Merc character.

I think we need to see when she REALLY gets into the mood.

Nah, we'll beat her in a joust and she'll be all swoony and lovey dovey with us, a real manly man who can show her whats what, and Tarin will storm in, knock her the fuck out, sweep us off our feet and carry us away, lay us down in bed, and then tie Hess to a chair and force her to watch.
>>
>>41496892
Assuming Tarin knows what to do after laying Roy on the bed.

Though I like where that is going.
>>
>>41496931
She's read the manuals and everything anon.
>>
>>41496953
It will still be a bumpy ride regardless and she has an audience as well.

Well we figured out she's a exhibitionist.
