Miho's gone off again, you lost sight of her after you'd gone back to load up on more of those little cocktail weiners that you eat with toothpicks. You love those things. Oh! And little mini pigs-in-a-blanket! You continue to load your plate with various appetizers. You're starting to think you might've been going backwards down the buffet line, actually.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank “Black Jack” and, full plate in hand you make your way towards a partially occupied table. As you kick out a chair and slide into it, you look across at the other inhabitant. “Mind?” You say, getting ready to tuck in.

“Free country.” He says, not taking his eyes off the crowd around him. Southern, but you don't recognize him as you go through your head trying to put a face or a voice to a tank. It doesn't work, so you join him in watching the crowd around the table.

Still though, the guy across from you is really familiar.

Well, its sort of something I was thinking about doing- basically I'm limited less by the time it takes to run the thread, than how late I can stay up to do it- since threads normally run until about 1-2AM for me, makes it hard to get up at 6AM the next morning for work. If this works out it gives me two extra back-up days I can run an Early Edition on if Saturday doesn't work out.
>>
>>41479266
With a Southern accent? From the Bronx?
What would a Southern/Bronx accent even sound like?
>>
You stare at the stranger, of and on, for a few more minutes and you still can't place him. For his part, he seems particularly comfortable just relaxing and watching the crowd.

Well, you aren't going to get anywhere staring and thinking. You clear your throat, getting his attention. “So, do I know you from somewhere?”

“Me? I don't think you know me. But you're that guy who's been causing a ruckus over in Japan. Kind of figured you'd make it.” He nods. “Good work on that Tiger II, by the way. Kinda figured that tank was overrated.” He smiles and looks back to the crowd before turning back to you. “Oh, the name's Boone, by the way.” He smiles and puts a hand across the table.

You introduce yourself.

It's good to see you back, BJ. Haven't been in the threads since you resumed.

In addition you might make me hate my money since Gaijin added the M26E1 to War Thunder a bit ago. It was tempting me for a while but it's expensive as hell.
>>
>>41482952
Gajin is currently on a censorship-spree. You shouldn't give them any money.
>>
>>41483035
What'd they do now?
I just came back a week ago after having not played since the US TDs were added.
>>
You glance around- you've already seen most of the room, but you want to illustrate the point for Boone. “Any idea what this whole shindig is about?” You say before popping a cocktail weiner into your mouth. “I mean, someone spent some serious money here, and that's before they dragged people from halfway across the world here, all expenses paid.”

“It was pretty expensive...” Boone muses. “Worth it, though. Am I right? Not the usual sun-baked BBQ-and-Chili-Dog affair.”

“Its a step up...” You reply, trying to spot what he's looking at. “Just not used to seeing this many tankers in one place without something to put holes in.” You take a sip of your soda. “So, what's your ride?” You ask, getting his attention back.

“My ride?” He asks.

“Yeah, you're a tanker, right?” You ask. “What's your ride?”

“Oh! No, sorry. I wish I were, but I'm just an enthusiast.” He says, waving you off.

Unfortunately there isn't any real competition for their niche market, so that can't really stop me from playing their game.

And the guy who did it got fired. Additionally, this wasn't some new heiree, the man in question had worked the company for over eight years. I've been tempted to give WoT a chance but the premium ammo thing always turned me off.

Also I've heard the grind is worse than WT, somehow.
>>
>>41483401
AW is pretty good, a bit crashy though. Very much beta software.
>>
>>41483573
I find the WT grind worse than WoT, also 'premium ammo thing'? You mean paying gold for premium ammo? That hasn't been a thing for a long time.
>>
>>41483573
i play both and yes is grindy as hell
so do yourself a fabot and dnplay above of ters 6 on wot and 3 tier on warthunder
i recomend you only go above if you got a big favorite on those tiers

and premium ammo on wot is buyable with ingame credits
>>
>>41483612
common complaint about premium ammo on WoT actually is they are regarded as 'noskillz' and render armor mostly useless, and using them is epitome of cancerous wallet warrior.

WoT is grindy, yes, but its fairly easy to reach tier 7. Hightiers are the most grindy one.
>>
>There's something he not telling you.

I found the WT crew system is painful.
>>
>>41483573
>but the premium ammo thing always turned me off.
Premium Ammo is really not a thing in War Thunder. War Thunder instead has hella expensive Premium Tanks, like a Sherman Calliope. Yes, you read that right. It's as broken as you think, if only because the damage model on the rocket rack is nonfunctional. It is also to my knowledge, one of the most expensive premium tank in the game.
>>
>>41483723
Yeah, I just laugh and think 'Sorry for using the tools given to me, let me make you feel better by pumping another 155mm HEAT shell into you.'
>>
>>41483814
There are cases when using premium is justified, like you are a medium, one lower tier and that heavy is capping and you unable to maneuvre fast, or in Clan Wars.

but as top tier heavy/tank destroyer and shooting a tank two tier lower with premium when you clearly can use normal shell, that something else.
>>
>>41483664
Maybe I'll give World of Tanks another shot after I reformat for Win10.

>>41483781
I meant the premium ammo in World of Tanks. Closest thing to that WT has is waiting to unlock the APHE ammo for US tanks.
That tank is the most expensive by a long shot, not to mention for a Tier II at that. The only thing close to it are the various US Tier IVs and the USSR Fw. 190.
>>
>>41483907
i still remember the shitstorm of that toptier TD brit

apparently HESH is one hell of a drug
>>
>>41483976
Last I saw, it was at 9,740 Golden eagles. You can buy a 10k package of Golden Eagles, for fifty dollars. A tank that costs as much as a new AAA title, can one-shot-kill anything it conceivably faces at its battle rating of 4.3. At least it has a Paywall preventing 'spam', unlike the Hellcat.
>>

You watch Boone for a while longer. He seems relaxed, comfortable, completely at ease just watching the people around him. But there's something that still eating at you. Something he didn't tell you. And he still seems so damned familiar. “So Boone, what do you mean by enthusiast?”

He starts and pauses a second. “I'm an enthusiast... I'm enthusiastic.” He says, seeming to stumble a bit.

“What? Like a writer?” You probe back. “Journalist or something?”

“No.” He says, waving the idea off. “No, my enthusiasm is a bit more... practical?” He pauses for a moment. “...Material.”

“So you're a mechanic? Or something?” You say- that still doesn't make sense- Every person here that you've recognized is directly part of a tank crew.

“Closer...” He pauses a moment more. “You're here with Miho Nishizumi?”

Dammit. You'll bite. “Alright then. Let's take a strole.” You say, shoving your chair back as you finish the last of the appetizers. You stand up and brush off any crumbs.

Instead of standing, you see Boone smoothly back away from the table before turning on the spot. You definitely hadn't noticed the wheelchair before. He notices your gaze. “Perhaps I could have chosen my words with a bit less irony.” He apologizes.

Before he leads your towards one of the doors into the hotel lobby. “So, hopefully you've surmised the reason I can only be a tank enthusiast, Commander.” He says. “There are many reasons you'd need to get out of a tank quickly.” He pats his legs. “Not going to happen with these.”

You nod, before glancing around the ballroom for Miho.

“You're looking for Commander Nishizumi...” He smiles. “We can wait for her if you'd like, but I'm not sure if her presence would be needed- let her socialize a bit with her fellow tankers?”

There's also a lot less emphasis on armor- really only MBTs get any appreciable armor, with the exception of some of the Soviet BMPTs. (And not all MBTs get armor, either- the M60, Leopard 1 and a few others are relatively lightly armored.)

You catch a glance at Miho through the crowd- she's genuinely having a good time with a gaggle of tankers talking and laughing with her. “Let her have some fun, Commander.” Boone says as he notices your glance. “She's in good hands. More importantly, she's meeting American tankers that aren't you.”

You turn and head out into the hallway. “Nothing against you. But as I said- there isn't enough communication, I think. She's learning that there's an entire culture of tanks that you're only one facet of.” He manages to overtake you- its a struggle to keep up with him without breaking into a light jog.

Eventually you make it to an elevator guarded by a very tall, imposing man who's failing miserably at not sticking out like a sore thumb. He nods to Boone but keeps an eye on you nevertheless as you both enter the elevator.

“So, I'm sure you've got a lot of questions, Commander.” He says politely, spinning in place to hit the button for the penthouse suite. “Now that we're away from the crowd, you should feel free to ask me anything.”

"Alright, what can I do so we can help each other out here? I can smell a prelude to a mutually beneficial proposition here."

“So...” You say, as you feel the elevator move upwards. “Who are you?” You ask. “You're an enthusiast- what does that really mean?”

“Yes, I apologize that I had to be a bit circumspect down there.” He looks up at the floor indicator. “I suppose you could call me a financier. I have a great interest in tanking and armored vehicles. So I do my best to help fund its practitioners and ensure that there's a steady supply of available tanks for new crews.” He shrugs. “It helps that my family is... wealthy. As for your first question.”

He pauses and offers a hand to shake. “Boone Lafayette.” As you shake his hand things come quickly, even for you.

“Lafayette Heavy Industries...” You say. The corporation had gone hand-in-hand with tanking for decades. They're one of the chief providers of replacement parts, ensuring that the already small supply of tanks wasn't constantly being cannibalized to keep other tanks running.

“One and the same. Well, my father owns the company, but he allows me to indulge in my hobby in the ways that I can.” He says with a smile. “We actually sell at-cost, you know. It keeps the prices down and ensures there are as few barriers to entry as possible.”

Ugh. Now I'm reminded of that "animated" adaptation of Frozen Teardrop. So very disappointing.

I'm also worried that other works that started as novels (like Sentinel) would get that treatment.

I'm really using the term very loosely. It's more like a combination of a drama CD narration and dialogue, plus slideshow panels. Granted, it's pretty well drawn, but it's pretty much just lacking.

Anyway, enough about mechs. Who hype for Infantry Square formations? WITH TANKS!

I think this will be the most enlightening to discuss next. We'll want to ask about what he wants with us, but I don't think we need to jump there quite yet.

“And the party?” You ask, as the elevator doors open into a short foyer. “You're spending some major dosh for this...” You say, starting to count on your hands. “I mean, international travel, lodging, all that food...”

“Not as much as you'd think.” Boone says as he approaches the door, which seems to unlock and open automatically as he rolls up to it. “Family owns this particular building... The airfare wasn't cheap, I'll give you that. But considering the reasoning... I could have spent a lot more, I think.”

“And what was the reasons...” You say, as you walk into the penthouse. The place is a palace of armor artifacts- models and dummy shells litter the shelves, while the centerpiece is a scale replica of DaVinci's original tank holding up a glass table. “Just a superfan looking to shake hands with his idle?”

Boone smiles as he gestures you to a large chair. “The was a side benefit, I'll admit.” He takes a spot across the room from you. “Offer you a drink?” He says, a touch of the table and a small refrigerator rises from the centerpiece. “As I was saying. Its a bit more important than that.”

“Oh?” You comment, as you reach in for a coke- in a fancy glass bottle, no less. “Whats that?”

“Tanking has been, well, tanking.” He says, gently. “The sport is slowly dying out. And I intend to save it.”

I'll note that this specifically isn't saying that she hasn't managed to infiltrate the US. It just implies she has some other objective. I wonder what it could be ...
