You were once Jakdal Zul, a young Dathomirian who was offered by the Nightsisters to the Sith in hopes of currying favor. You survived your trials at the Academy, and were apprenticed to Darth Greia.

You were once a student of the Dark Side, and a practitioner of great alchemical secrets, taught to you by your master. You waged war against the Republic, and claimed the name of Lord Aurus.

Once, you and your close ally, Umbaran Force-user Kaitan, helped lay siege to a rival Sith Lord's compound. This ended in disaster. You briefly achieved godlike power in the Force to slay Darth Ordon, and seize the body of Darth Lucent. However, this came at a cost.

Your connection to the Force was overtaxed, and the power of the Dark Side burnt you out. You're unsure if full recovery is even possible. The Dark Lord, supreme Emperor of the Sith, is uncertain himself. Still, he has taken you and several others, plagued by visions, into his care - training you as the Children of the Emperor. He speaks of a second war, a war reaching beyond the known galaxy. To be honest, you've hardly even heard news from the front of the war against the Jedi.

You now are in the chambers of the Dark Lord, deep underground beneath the holy world of Moraband. You don't know how to leave this maze of passages, and have awaken from an uneasy sleep.

You close your eyes and cast aside sight, reaching out with your perceptions. You were taught to do this in the Academy - and above, students surely struggle and fall as they did before. You focus your emotions, and bring to bear all your concentration on the energy field that binds all things.

You see it as though through a cracked mirror, raindrops where once a river ran. The emotions seep up from the core of the planet and bubble over, and the strife on the surface sinks beneath. All of it feeds the Dark Lord's desire for power.

Then, pain - a sharp pain in the back of your head. Trying to focus still, the pain grows, shattering your focus. You can't reach to the Force like this, and your persistence leaves you on your hands and knees, breathing heavily.

A servant enters. She is robes in red, heavily cloaked so that you can barely make out her humanoid form.

"You have been summoned, Child."

You prepare to chastise the impudent slave, motioning as if to sweep the unseemly thing from your sight. Nothing happens - if she noticed your attempt, she doesn't react. You exhale.

"Let me get dressed." The minion nods. You throw on the simple black tunic you were provided with. You affix to it a token that marks your status - a small, golden pin with the Emperor's insignia. You searched, but there were no weapons you could find - nor any other possessions. Your communication device shows signs of heavy tampering.

The servant has not left. Instead, she waits outside your door.

"What are you, exactly?"

She speaks in a flat monotone. "Those children of the Sith who cannot touch the Force, or those orphans of the most loyal of Imperial officers are called to the lower chambers. We serve the Supreme Master in a different capacity. It is one of the highest honors, to have the opportunity to secure the dominance of our everlasting overlord."

"Who called me?"

"The Dark Lord." she says, as she leads you through a winding series of passages. She presses a tile on the wall, and a secret door slides open. "I may not set foot on this ground, lest I risk death. It is a place of the power of the Force - you must enter alone."

You step in, unhesitating. The door slides shut behind you, leaving you in a room lit by the flickering of some fiery crystals. And the voices approach you once more.

"You could have been the Reformer. You could have freed the Galaxy from all that is to come - and now, you shall choose to aid us, or else die."

"Who are you? What reform? And will you restore my connection to the Force?"

"We spoke to you before... destroy the Jedi and Sith, end the war that will do naught but raze all that is... power limited in the Dark Lord's domain... surface of the world... find us... be free..."

"Enough! I rejected you once - and I will never be a slave again." You cry out. The voices, once so full of surety, begin to fade to whispers, then echoes, then a murmur on the cool air. Then, they are gone.

The Dark Lord entered the room without your detection. He dresses in tattered robes, and a mask hides his face. You kneel before him, and he motions for you to rise.

"My child." He says. "Forget all that you thought you knew of the Force. You have been made a blank canvas, and that is an opportunity. A painful one, but still a chance for victory to be achieved."

"Who were those... things, my lord?" You ask. "They've haunted me for a while now."

"Ah, so you wish to know of the second enemy. You can trust I will teach you the techniques to destroy them - and restore your connection to the Force, for I am a merciful lord. But this will take time."

>"My lord...is there a Rhythm to the Force? A long, slow one?"
If he asks further, the explanation is:
>"There is a Rhythm, my lord. I...I've wanted to tell someone, but I don't know if anyone else would understand it. The Dark wanes, and the Light grows, and when the Light reaches its zenith and the darkness is shadows in the noonday sun, the shadows slowly lengthen, until the twilight when they blend. Then the night comes, and only the light of the moon and stars, and those who have trained senses besides sight can move around freely. Creatures of the night. And then the darkness breaks as the sun slowly returns, until it's dawn again...the Force is no different. The Light and the republic, the Dark and the Empire, back and forth over and over again...I want to see that. All of it, the small fragments each of them have left on the universe. Am...am I making sense?"

"Am I still a Lord? What's my authority within the Empire?"

"You report directly to me - this means your authority is now my own. Your word is equal to the words of a Darth. However, this doesn't mean that you won't be expected to exercise prudence. Displeasing me is a very foolish idea."

"I need to learn to reconnect with the Force - now. I can't keep on being so... powerless!" You say. "My lord - I need your help."

"You knew the consequences of that elixir of yours." He walks up to you and taps your forehead, where the symbol of the Sith assassins is still engraved. You're a human now - in your twenties, dark hair tied back in a ponytail. "You relied on the Force - now rely on yourself. When you can break a man with your bare hands, then we can speak of the Dark Side with one another. When you have plunged your sword into the heart of a Tuk'ata." He sighs, the sigh of a wearied father. "Your connection to this power will return to you naturally, with experience. Attempting to accelerate it by unnatural means would risk your life - and I don't want to discard such a resource."

"One last question, my lord. About the Force." You say. "But not about my own powers."

The Emperor's gaze is piercing.

"Does the Force embody a cycle? Empire and Republic, Jedi and Sith... Light and Dark. I've read the histories, and it seems like it never stops repeating."

"For once, a good question. This is the last war, however - knowledge of the Force has advanced such that we at last can wage battles of eradication. The Jedi will be victorious, or the Sith. And from there, we will at last move forward - and find a new way, unbound by the past. All prophets have spoken as much. This enemy we fight seeks to destroy both sides, believing that peace will arise when no one remains to wage war." He pauses. "Peace is a lie."

So, we want to keep the cycle going, right? That might involve total eradication of all three sides, destroying/hoarding all knowledge of the force, and starting the cycles over.

"Yes, my lord." You say, nodding deferentially. You stand before one of the supreme Force users of the galaxy. What else can you do?

You step in the hall, and the servant slides shut the secret door. All of the structure below ground is primitive, made of worked stone. There's an elegance to its simplicity.

You move to return to your room, and the servant steps in front of you, blocking your path.

Your blow, directed towards the sternum, is interrupted by a swift kick to the leg, knocking you to the floor. You rise, undeterred.

Each blow you make is parried with an insulting ease, with the warrior positioning herself so that the strike is cushioned.

You're on the floor, bleeding from a split lip. Your foe's voice is still empty of passion - when you've fought before, you're used to the strain and focus of battle, or the grimace of berserker rage, but this is much more infuriating.

"Rise. Continue."

You do - and bring a blow with your left hand, which she parries. Then, in your right hand, you take the pin that was on your clothes and gouge it into her eye. She grits her teeth, grimacing and wheeling backwards. Her wraps fall away to reveal the silver hair of an Echani.

Your room has changed since you last saw it. The wardrobe, full of identical uniforms, is now next to an armor rack - one fiber mesh combat suit, and one armor suit for a heavy Sith military trooper.

Relative to the lightweight robes you're used to training in, the combat suit is snug and stiff. It can dampen vibroweapons and blaster shots, but the best defense is still avoiding being hit. And you don't see any Cortosis weaving, so a lightsaber would cut through it like air.

Training is simple - you run, then you run some more. The labyrinth that you now call home seems to shift to accommodate this, forming a loop that allows you to run laps.

For days, you train in the suit - and spar with the Echani woman, your designated chaperone and mouthpiece to the Emperor, to guide you through the unfamiliar parts of the treacherous heart of Moraband. With time, you grow more accustomed to it.

"Not enough." The woman says, lowering her electrostaff. You've recently begun training with that weapon. "It must be as a second skin to you."

Returning to your room, to contemplate all that you have lost - for she said that will lead to the Dark Side, you are confronted by two doors.

You push open the door with some effort - it's heavy, and your muscles are tired. The room is actually well-lit, albeit by an eerie, sourceless glow. It's some sort of statuary, with small nameplates marking each Sith depicted.

DARTH COWYL - She that rediscovered the alchemical heritage of the Sith, first Lord of Sith Advancement.

DARTH KORVUS - He that slew the Jedi Master Myro Bennik before the Republic could be warned, sparing the nascent Empire annihilation. First Lord of Conquest.

You follow the path - the room has been given room to grow. Your footsteps kick up dust, the room is seldom walked in. You half expected the statues to be there in the back of your mind, but you were uncertain.

DARTH LUCENT - Apprentice to the Dark Lord, scourge of his enemies, burner of Umbara.

DARTH ORDON - Conqueror of Mustafar, first to walk on the surface of Moraband before reclamation.

"War leaves little time to mourn." The woman says. Her voice has a raspy echo that indicates she is being overshadowed by the Emperor. His alchemical arts have regenerated her eye, but it is the red-limned yellow of the Sith. A color your eyes once had. You make the proper gestures of respect to your master.

"What is this place, my lord? Why give these people statues?"

"They are the Darths who have fallen, who died as Sith. I cannot abide a Sith having love, nor friendship - but these are the closest I shall know to such. The ones who served me closely, who knew my will and the reason behind it. They are gone - two by your hand, which makes you the worst killer of Darths yet, in this war."

Long after A New Hope, at least by half a century. The New Republic is a stable political entity. The Sith of Bane are extinct, and the new Sith Empire has arisen out of the Unknown Regions, lead by a new Dark Lord. Far enough in the future that it doesn't overlap with any canon work.

"I don't regret it, Dark Lord. I did the right thing - and you know that I did."

The Master chuckles, bemused. "Of course you did. Anyone who lacks such conviction cannot hope for an eventual place in this hall. Of course, as one of my children, your place in the Empire is of small consequence. Your fight is elsewhere." He turns towards you. "And I suppose that means that you may merit an engraving in a different room."

These reformers seem to believe that they are more complete for resisting the duality of The Force. It is unnatural, but logical.

"What lead to you remaking the Sith Empire? And what are the reformers?" You ask intently. "I know you have many stories to tell."

"Then it would be a shame," he says, "If I were to simply give them all to you at once. "The reformers are those who traveled beyond the galaxy, abandoning the Jedi, Sith, Sensari or whatever order they were a part of. They gave up the light and the dark, and found Mortis, a planet of strange power - and there, they became a parasite to the Force. They let the Force feed their power, but then they exist as a separate entity that works against the will of the Force.

"They believe that Jedi and Sith are obsolete, harmful orders that must be exterminated to free the galaxy from the conflict of light and dark. They assume that a balance can be found when absolutes are eliminated." He scoffs. "The arrogance! Regardless, they will strike soon. I have felt it in the Force, despite their efforts. I allowed you a vision of them that you may recognize them. And while you and your allies train, I will decipher a means of bypassing their physical proxies and destroying these so-called reformers."

"So the war we fight -"

"Will be on a more spiritual plane as much as the material one. They create a unique distortion that must be unraveled to totally scour them from the Force, which they call the Great Enemy."
> [ ] "My connection to the Force - will it return soon?"

"I should meditate on that knowledge." You say.

"That's Jedi ideals. Act on the knowledge - or keep it within you to act on. If it is useless for those, it is without merit." You frown at the idea of being compared to a Jedi.

"Will I meet with other Children of the Emperor?"

"Yes - but after your training, or towards the end of it. It must be, for the most part, in solitude. Save for me - your omnipresent master."

"Then I will ready myself." You say, thinking on what he said. The Jedi are no longer the only threat to the Sith - rather, now the Reformers of Mortis are also rising against you. This is a pivotal moment approaching, and you steel yourself for the times of strife to come.

Thanks for playing SAQ! Expect a new one next weekend.

I don't plan to have this one go on super long. But I may run other quests, and I'll at least finish this one.
