Tires screech on the asphalt, engines roaring as they push their way through the course with every bit of energy they have, and drivers manipulating their vehicle like one would a piano, making it run all the way from high to low and creating something beautiful, a delightful melody that graced the ears with their presence.Almost as loud as the cars themselves, the audience: cheering and jeering with the best of them, a constant wave that rolled out from the stands towards the drivers, battling with that fine melody to become a full orchestra, where everything melts together into one fantastic symphony. And you, standing in the middle of it all, can think of only one thing to say.“Holy shit.”---Welcome to Redline Quest, #1! You are Mikoto, a boy who has his eyes on only one prize: The Redline. Follow Mikoto’s story to see him advance from the bottom of the racing society to the very top, overcoming obstacles like gangs, governments, and gratuitous amounts of ‘gotta go fast’ references.Twitter: https://twitter.com/artemisQMArchive: suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=ArtemisQMLet’s begin, shall we?---”Holy shit.”Digs laughs at your incredibly verbose analysis of the tournament. “No kidding, Mikoto. It’s great, right?”“Yes. Very.” Your head seems to be from a bobble-toy, constantly nodding back and forth, agreeing with Digs’ words. The tournament you’re at is the National Shift, a bi-annual attempt to break the speed of light on land. Failing that, going really fucking fast until tires pop and engines blow up, hoping to be the first person to cross the finish line before any of that happens. And today, you’re here!(1/2)
>>41479906Of course, your mother gave you some extremely explicit instructions for how to handle yourself at the Shift.“Don’t you even fucking dare, Mikoto. At the very least, give me a call first so I can kill you before the races do.”You’re still searching for a psychic who can helpfully remove the memory from your mind, as Digs pulls you along towards his own area of the Shift. As the World Cup reigning champion, along with a Yellowline driver, Digs is the one who gets to oversee the National Shift, working with the judges to ensure a fair-and-square race without (too many) casualties. He does a splendid job at it, and you were amazed that he’d invite you to watch him run it.“So, Mikoto, it’s gonna be a few hours before the practice runs end, and the Starting Parade begins. What do you want to do until then?”>Show me around! You know what to do>I’m gonna go find Katherine: she’s racing today.>I’m gonna find Rench: He says he’s got a car for me.>Write In.

Don’t really know what to do.”Digs grins. “Sure! I think I’m going to be going to the engineering shops first, make sure that everyone’s going to be ready. Also helps to discourage whatever pre-match cheating there might be. Up for that?”“Yeah, sure! Sounds fun!” Actually sounds like a good opportunity to meet a few other engineers, too. Rench keeps you closer to him than his wallet, considering you’re probably the reason the latter exists in the first place. Would be nice to see what other engineering work is done (no matter how bad it might be, as Rench says).“This way, then.” he starts leading you through the crowd, occasionally stopping to sign a few pictures (or various bodyparts, and he does it far more gracefully than you ever think you’ll be able to).And not too long after, you’re in front of the gigantic workshops that house the vehicles. Called Frame-lodge by some, it was a gigantic warehouse that many drivers used to store their vehicles for races, along with a top-notch repair centre. The company that owned it, Frame-ware, did a whole bunch of contracting for other planets, building huge shipments of cars and such.Of course, they held a soft spot for the drivers from home. If you ever made it to the Yellow-line (or Redline, though none from your planet have gone yet), you could depend on them to hook you up with some VERY shiny items.Walking inside, the sound of welding and hammering instantly overwhelms you, and you happily take the pair of ear-plugs that Digs offers you. Soon enough, you’re walking around the facility, oohing and aahing at all the different vehicles there. Plenty you’ve never seen before, but you recognize a few either way.“It’s awesome, isn’t it?” Digs shouts over the noise.“It’s amazing! I can’t wait to come here!”(1/2)
Fuck Redline, where's the Trava space quest?
>>41480438Ah, thanks Anon! You're a fucking hero. Been looking for the OST.As a reminder to all readers, the OST is required listening while reading. Yellow-Line is the best for whenever there's a race, so pop that on when it gets fast.>>41480482“You know,” Digs comments, stepping out of the way to allow a large automated cart to roll past, “I’m sure that you could find a car here if you do want to race.”You sigh. “I guess, but that’s not the same.”Digs smiles. “Rench is your engineer, isn’t he?”“Yeah.”Digs nods, looking down the aisles of frames. “The best drivers always have an incredibly engineer backing them up. No matter how good you are at driving, it’s all about having a vehicle you can fully take advantage of. Not to be insulting, but you have a lot of room to grow in, over the next few years, even with how good you are now. Rench’s own skills can develop alongside yours, so that you can truly work together.”You nod, looking out over the field. “Yeah, I get that.”“Anyway, anyone specific you want to see?” Digs points past a few cars to another, something that looks like an oversized engine as compared to a car. “If you want, I can introduce you to a few friends.”>Go say hi to Digs’ friends.>I’d like to go find my own, if that’s okay.>Know any engineers, here? >>41480553You turn back to look over the never-ending expanse of cars and engineers tending to them. “Uh, do you mind if I go have a look around on my own? I’d really love to see just what people are working on.”Digs gives you the thumbs up. “Go for it! When you need to find me, I’ll probably be up in the commentator’s booth, so join us once you’re done.”You nod, and start walking away, down the aisles of automotives. Several people seem to be putting cars together from scratch, bolting together hefty frames to hold all the components that they can fit inside the damn things (apart from, you know, comfortable chairs and AC).Soon enough, you arrive at the centre of the warehouse, where there seem to be a whole bunch of engineers all circled up and talking, a laugh ringing out from the group every so often. Surrounding them are more parts, scattered in some form of organized chaos around their workstations, each one holding frames in various stages of completion.>Go up and talk to the engineers.>Go to the stations and admire their work.>Leave, head back outside to where the racers are.>Write In.

AH FUCK YEAH! RED LINE QUEST!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doEwWzMz99A
>>41480987Moving around the group, you walk around the perimetre of the workstations, peering in to admire the frames, sometimes just a bit more than a few pipes together, other times full-built cars that only need to get wheels put on. Your attention is especially caught by what seems to be a hybrid vehicle. Two wheels, but even as you look around, you can’t find any connection to them from the engine, that sits prominently at the back-end of the vehicle, glowing slightly in the dark factory.“It’s nice, innit?” you turn to see one of the engineers walking up to you, mug of coffee in his hand. It’s notable that the hand seems to be robotic, along with the rest of his arm, built up in a similar aesthetic to the vehicle. He walks up to the engine, knocking on it with his flesh-and-bone hand. “It’s a Mega four-fifty-four, capable of powerin’ a neighborhood. Or, you know, a driver’s car.”You take a closer look at the engine, now that you know the make. The Mega brand prides itself on supplying ridiculous amounts of energy (it’s first offered a megawatt, hence the brand name). The 454 is the newest of the series, generating an unprecedented amount of power for its size. And yet...“Aren’t these better for hover-vehicles?”The engineer nods. “That’s right. Which is what this vehicle’s got.”“Uh...but what about the wheels?”“Exactly! Takes too much energy to keep a frame floating, ‘specially Redline frames. I figure, why bother trying to keep a frame nine inches above the ground, when we already invented something to do that?”You look at the frame again. Again, it makes a bit more sense why the wheels aren’t connected in any way to the engine. “So, you’ll just be pushing it along with whatever hover mechanism you have?”The engineer grins. “Exactly! I can get an extra twenty percent power to use for thrust that way, and the wheels can keep most of the momentum facing forwards, as opposed to constantly fighting gravity.” (1/2)

So where are you at? We can meet up some place.”“Sure, sure. Uh, how about near the commentator tower?”“How about in it? Digs can get us up there.”“Right, right. You and your driver friends. Sure, I’ll see you there!”You end the call, and switch on over to Katherine. “Hello, Queen Arachnia, how are you today?”A snort from the end of the line. “Hilarious, Mikoto. What do you want?”“I was just wondering if you were at the Shift today.”“Yeah, I’m preparing for my race now. Why d’you ask?”“I’m here too. It’s only the practice run, and we’re already seeing some racers tear up the ground faster than we can replace it! What do you think about that, Digs?”“With the way they’re roaring ‘round this course, I don’t think they’re gonna be a threat in the main race. The Shift doesn’t have time or patience for show-offs-”“AND WOW! There they go again! Damn, how fast is that, Digs?””Seems to be about four hundred and-”“AND AGAIN! You’d think the racers were competing for Redline! Not a single touch to the brake, nosiree!”Digs sighs, and waves at you as you enter the tower. You didn’t have any problems getting up, as the guard was one of Digs’ own, and recognized you from the night of the party (and when he installed the satellite dishes in your Mom’s restaurant, so she could watch whatever races you decided to kill yourself in.Over in the corner, you spot Rench, talking with a group of drivers and engineers. It seems they’re debating the advantages of wheeled vehicles versus hover vehicles. It seems that Rench is ranting. “-And as I’m saying, you’re wasting too much energy keeping the vehicle off the ground! With a proper frame, you shouldn’t spend any more energy than necessary, no matter how overbuilt you are!”One of the drivers laughs. “Seriously? People can barely use half the energy modern engines provide, so why not divert some of that towards lift? Plus, by keeping yourself off the ground, you can get a more aerodynamic shape, and you don’t need to worry about suspension at all.”As you approach the group, Rench turns and waves at you. “Hey, Mikoto, help me settle this. Didn’t know he was that important.”Rench sighs. “Like you wouldn’t believe, mate. He pretty much makes motorcycles with rockets attached to the back of them. Did you see his frame?”You nod. “Yeah, two-wheeled hover-thing.”Rench shakes his head in disbelief. “You met Nahar. You lucky bastard. Think you can introduce me?”You smile. “Actually, I told him you were my engineer. He said that you had done a pretty good job on my frame.”Rench lies back into the chair, staring up at the ceiling. “My life’s over. I don’t have to do anything anymore. Nahar the Great just complemented my skills.”“Don’t go yet, please. So keep proving your worth to me, or else I’m gonna have to go find someone who can actually engineer.”Before Rench can respond with a taunt about either your own skills or your mother, you see Digs waving at you from his seat. “Oh, sorry Rench, I’ll be back in a bit.”He gives up, and you’re soon over at Digs’ side. He seems to be leaning away from his microphone. Just past him, the commentator is still going. “Look at this, Digs! Look how fast they’re going! Man, that’s so fast! Of course, they’re just letting the car steer for them, so no skill at all, but very fast!”Digs seems panicked. “Listen, Mikoto, I need a favour.”“What?”He eyes the commentator next to him, who still seems to be amazed that anybody could possibly go faster than ten metres a second. “This guy’s getting on my nerves. Just a bit. I need your help with him.”“Uh, okay. How so?”“Shut him up. Get your Morosa down there, and keep your foot down on the accelerator throughout the entire course.”“How would that help? Besides, you know I’m not allowed to race-”Digs pleads harder. “Come on, Mikoto. He seems to believe that this ‘new generation’,” fingers quoting at that, “can only drive fast because some computer’s aiding th. Honestly, looking at all the hover-frames down there, I’m inclined to agree with him. And anyway, it’s only a practice run. Unlikely that you’ll get in a crash.”The commentator keeps going. “And wow! The top racers usually accumulate a ton of respect and reputation as they go up the ranks, often resulting in companies and corporations sponsoring them. The racers, not exactly interested in stock options, instead opted for a system of favours, making some PR stunt for a company in return for a guarantee to have an item delivered straight to them, no questions asked, when cashed in.Soon enough, the more powerful racers started to hand out their own cards as they passed on from racer to old-timers, using their connections and power to create their own networks. Some years down the line, a Favour Card from a racer, especially one who’s won your sector’s championship, means a bunch (don’t even think about Yellowline or Redline winners). And Digs handed one to you.“Godspeed, Mikoto,” Digs whispers, before slumping back on the desk in an attempt to escape the mindless drivel. You manage to make your way back to Rench without bumping into too many objects, though he seems to notice you’re out of it.“What happened, Mikoto? "No...I remember coming out the entrance to the Shift practice circuit, thinking something like...uh...I think it was some base desire to have an extremely high displacement along the x, y, and z axis in a very short amount of time. What happened?""Oh. You won the Redline."Kidding.
>>41487290YesThe whole track.
i dont know if this music fits the quest's world but I think it fits this moment.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cno20onK9dY

>>41487561I knew my physics degree would be useful for something! Just not dank memes
>>41487595This is a joke, by the way. The degree part.>>41486804Due to Rench’s superstitions about racing (“You don’t watch the fucking engineer at his job!”) you didn’t get an opportunity to see exactly what was inside the car up until he revealed it to you. From first looks, the entire thing was kinda similar to that frame you had once upon a time. It had been mutilated, combined with another frame to make it even longer. You didn’t ask why. You had thought it was for more coolant piping, so your Morosa wouldn’t just explode as soon as you floored it.You were wrong. It was something else. With a quick glance at the dashboard, you confirm your suspicions, even as your foot continues to travel down to the floor. There’s no stopping this. Maybe you could’ve stopped this at some point. But not anymore.Because it’s happening. This all goes through your mind as you watch the duel Morosa 12 Cylinder set up, one for each axle, spin up. And then there’s nothing left but the instinctive impulse to hold on for dear life as you are sent rocketing off the entrance ramp, already catching six feet of air.“And wow, there’s another fast...what’s that. What is that.” You can hear it in his voice as you land, the reinforced wheels of your car biting into the asphalt.“...That car in the distance...” you can hear it in his voice, the fact that his brain has finally shorted at seeing a car go faster than twenty metres a second. You’ve just hit sixty. It seems that most people on the practice circuit have wisely decided to move out of the way upon hearing the thunderous roar of two Morosa 12 Cylinders. Good for you, because you’re not sure you would be able to turnAs you continue to accelerate (you manage to make out 78 metres a second from the dashboard), you come up upon an extremely sharp turn. Like most race-tracks, it has a tilted edge, actually stretching right up to the wall itself, above which the spectators watch.(1/2)
>>41487595>Physics degreeI have a much greater respect for you, now.God I hate that shit.
>>41487641I'm working towards it now, in actuality. I'm in love with space, and there's no fucking way I'm dying on this planet. All hail Elon Musk.
>>41487665You still have my respect.Food is my jam.And that includes jam.I was going for an engineering degree a few years back, and physics sucked the life out of me.
>>41487730And that's perfectly fine. I tried engineering, but I feel like I can't get into the real hard work in it (as in, recording what I've done FUCK GANTT CHARTS).The math's the easiest for me. And the creativity. Hey, maybe if I got someone who was actually responsible, that would cover the other part!
>>41487632Your car gives you no other option than to accept that wall as your new ground, the force pulling you against the wall far more than the pathetic thing called gravity. You take the turn, parts of the wall shattering underneath your wheels, until your frame reluctantly goes back to the ground again, having lost no speed on the turn.Another glance confirms that you actually gained another fifty metres a second. The track tears away underneath you, the asphalt barely able to stand up to the insane revolutions-per-minute that the tires put out. You’re not really sure what would happen if you attempted to break at this point, so you’re kinda relieved that Rench had removed them. What a weird thing to say.Soon, you’re approaching the final stage of the track. All the other racers have moved to the side, only watching your progress with something like awe. That’s what you think it is, anyway: their faces pass by too quickly to tell.Soon enough, you’re on the uphill slope towards the finish line. The commentator seems to have regained his control. “My god,” his voice calls from the speakers.Your dashboard tells you that you’re going 600 metres a second. It might be nine hundred. You’re finding it really hard to concentrate right now.“He’s...”You’re a kilometre away from the start.“So...”You’re three hundred metres from the start.“Fast...”You’ve past the start. And you realize, just before you faint from the ten gees of force on your body...You’re not coming back to the ground.
>>41487815Small break for me to have dinner. And I got 86 for captcha
>>41487867look at his post numbers 86 are in there
Just a bit longer. I feel ill after that meal.I make delicious pizza. Why did I order instead?
>>41488104your a lazy fuck?
>>41488150Definitely not. I've been extremely healthy lately.But yes, I might've been lazy tonight.Writing.
>>41487815Ach.With consciousness, comes great responsibility. And pain, lots of it.It almost feels like your bones were run through a grinder, then glued back together. Like each and every atom of you aches, and any motion would send them into agony.Even thinking hurts. Rench is gonna have a field day making jokes about that.Talking about Rench, where are you?Opening your eyes reveals you to be in some large tent. It seems that you’re still wearing the get up that Rench got to match with your vehicle. High quality, for sure. Feels like its made from spidersilk. After a few minutes, waiting for the pain to dilute itself, you attempt to lean up to get a better look around you. Whatever you’re in, it’s definitely something like a hospital room. You can see an IV standing over in the corner, and there’s a remote near you that has a ‘Call Nurse’ button. Below it is a sticky note saying “PRESS THIS BUTTON WHEN YOU WAKE UP.”>Press button>Hold off for a bit>Get out of here.So what do you guys think so far?
>>41488316>Press buttonIt's good but I like your other quests more
>>41488316>>Press buttonhello mom
>>41488316>Hold off for a bitOh man, mom's gunna kill me
>>41488361Which ones specifically? I just wanted to try a quest where I had an actual focus for a story (as in, specific end goal (being the Redline)). I feel like my stories aren't focused enough, and this is going to help me when I get back to running Akane Shogo's quest.
>>41488316>Press the button frank.
>>41488495Fuck you fluff, you can't make me do it!
>>41488484I think it's more of a matter of taste than story focusI'm just not really into racingI've only read LiT and BDE and I just like those kinds of genres
>>41488601That's completely fair.Writing for pressing the button.
>>41488316Deciding that nothing too bad could happen, you go to press the button. What an awful, horrible idea.Your mother charges into the room, looking like the very embodiment of Wrath itself, stalking on over until she’s right in your face.“What,” she growls, “on fucking earth were you thinking?”You gulp. “Uh...Digs asked me to do it?”“And that makes it okay.”“I called you too!”Your mother smiles. Her eyes stay dead. “Ah, so it’s perfectly okay that you were going at six hundred and seventy metres a second.”“...No, it isn’t.”“Good. Now,” she wraps you up in a hug, “please don’t do that, Mikoto. I only have one of you, and my warranty ran out a while back. I’d rather not lose you.”You awkwardly try to hug her back, keeping a scream back. “I know, mom. But you can’t say it wasn’t amazing.”She laughs. “Sure, sure. I think you need to see a video of yourself, first-”“MIKOTO!” Rench bursts into the room, rushing over to where you’re lying. He grabs the remote from your side, muttering something like, “you need to see this.”He turns on the TV in the corner of the room, and you watch the entire clip of you racing the entire fifty-five kilometre course.According to the reporter, you beat it in one minute and twenty six seconds. The new world record for the Shift.“Dude, it doesn’t even matter that you did that during the practice run. They’re considering calling off the main event because of your little stunt.”You take a breath. “Wow. Does anyone know its me?”He shakes his head. ‘Not yet. I think a few people might have made a connection with the Morosa engines, but your original car is still intact, so you could pull it off if you wanted.”You nod after a moment. “Okay then...so what do I do?”(1/2)
>>41489141Rench shrugs. “You could reveal yourself, or keep racing as your other identify. People don’t really have a name for you yet, but they’re throwing things around like Mega-Morosa, or Moro-san. In fact, the company posted something on the local Bulletin, saying that they’ll actually sponsor whoever had done it.”Your mom sighs. “Honestly, Mikoto. Each time I say you shouldn’t race, you pull yourself further and further in. Can you at least wait until you give me grandchildren? I can regale them with tales of your stupidity.”There’s a very timid knock on the door. Rench goes over and looks through the peep-hole, then quickly turns and slams the deadbolt.“It’s the media,” he hisses.>Reveal yourself>Stay in your new persona>Write InGonna end after this final event, since I've been invited ~somewhere~.
>>41489173>>Stay in your new persona
>>41489173>Reveal yourselfthey will find me out soon anyway.
>>41489173>>Reveal yourselfif we dont some jackass might try and take it.
>>41489173you're leaving us for a wild sex party aren't you?
>>41489480Yes, there are be plenties of the beautiful ladies and there will be the sex.
>>41489173You sigh. “Let them in. Might as well reveal it now that I’ve taken care of Digs’ wish.”Rench nods, taking a final peek through the peep-hole, and unbolts the door, letting in a gigantic flood of reporters that surround your bed, apart from one section that your Mom occupies like a force of nature.“Wait! You’re the Dual Morosa racer?”“Aren’t you Mikito, one of the local Shift winners?”“You aren’t even independent yet! How did you pull off this shit?”Your Mom grumbles, but gives it up to you. You shrug, and grab one of the microphones at random. “Uh, I am Mikoto, and this is my engineer-” you pull Rench in, “and we’re the ones who put on that race in the dual Morosa monstrosity.”Another reporter pokes in. “Is this some marketing stunt? We know that Morosa hasn’t been doing too well lately, with its offerings paling in comparison to more recent releases by Mega and Solus in the Hover and Mechanical space. Are you trying to prove something to the sector, and galaxy beyond?”You look at Rench, and shrug. “Uh, as a driver, getting that initial acceleration means a lot more than long term performance, especially when the lifespan of any frame is barely going to be longer than the race. Maybe if this were the Yellowline or Redline, but honestly I’m plenty satisfied with Morosa.”Another reporter comes in. “You’re obviously incredibly new to the racing scene. Since you’re the de-facto winner of the National Shift, will you be going onto the World Cup?”Your Mom’s face goes pale, and she seems to choke a little bit at the words.“Uh...”>Once I’m independent, you can expect to see me there.>Mate, I’m not stopping till I win the fucking Redline.>Maybe. Keep your eyes open, eh?
>>41489627>Maybe. Keep your eyes open, eh?
>>41489627You look over to your Mom, who seems...more than a bit upset at this point. You reach over and poke her, shocking her out of her state. You turn back to the cameras, and smile.“Maybe I just might. I guess I can only say keep your eyes peeled and ready, eh?”---The man across from you grins as he scans down through the menu. “This is a nice place. What do you recommend?”You look through today’s options. “Uh, I really like the Halan Chili, but might be a bit too spicy.”He closes the menu with a smile. “I’ll have that, then.”You nod, tapping on your screen to set the order, then turn your attention back to the man. “So, what can I help you with?”He nods, and pulls out a business card, which he hands over to you. “As I said before, I’m one of the Driver Representatives of Morosa. We are...incredibly impressed with your work with Morosa engines. We had even considered approaching you earlier, over the leaked footage of your race against Arachnia, but this...we couldn’t let this go. We’d like to ask if you’re willing to be sponsored by Morosa.”You frown, leaning back in your chair. “I don’t know. After all, it’s not like my talents would be limited to only your company.”The Rep nods. “I understand that. But we’d like to give you an opportunity to allocate your resources elsewhere, while we provide some of the vital components. I’m sure your engineer friend would agree,” he says, turning to Rench at your side.Rench shrugs. “I guess. Depends on what you can get us.”The Rep slides on over another card, which this time you recognize as a schematic. Rench snatches it up, folding it out and looking over the design. He looks up with something approaching awe in his eyes as he stares at the Rep. “No way...”(1/2)
>>41490169The Rep nods graciously. “Morosa has begun expanding into Matter Annihilation Engines, for their incredible effectiveness in providing lots of power immediately. We were quite taken with what Mikoto said about how Drivers aren’t looking for longevity or long-term performance, so we’re looking to fill that niche.”Rench slides the schematic on over wordlessly, and you run it over...“Four cores,” you breathe out. “Four fucking annihilator cores. Christ, is this for a fucking spaceship?”The Rep laughs. “Oh, could be. Or, a Redline car.”“You want to sponsor us that far?”“Definitely. With the equipment you have already, I think you’ll be just fine until then, and we are still working on the prototype of this engine.” the rep stands, “until then, I’ll wish you goodbye. I’ll see you around.”You both wait until he exits the shop before exploding in excitement. “FOUR CORES!”“FOUR CORES!”“What’s this about four cores?” Katherine asks, entering the restaurant. You grin and wrap her up in a hug, explaining it to her. “Four cores!”“Four cores,” she says, not understanding. You let Rench show her the schematic, enjoying the look come over her face as she realizes its contents. She lifts her head to stare at you, mock anger burning in her eyes. “Oh, you think you’re so cool because you’ve got a sponsor already?”You grin. “Oh, of course!”“I promise you, before you take another step I’ll have my own sponsor! Mega, even! I bet on it!”“Either way, it’s a while’s away. For now,” you sit back down, just as your Mom brings over a few bowls of chili, “let’s enjoy the present, shall we?”---That's it for tonight! A pleasure, indeed! And now I'm off. Have a lovely night.
