Bald skin tightens and flushes red as the muscle beneath it grows in a matter of heartbeats. Injuries that should be debilitating close seemingly by muscle action alone. In thorough denial of the hamstringing that Nytora gave him the musclebound moron rockets off the ground at you in a bullish charge.

Your surprise slows your response. You shift on your feet as you try to circle out of his path as you try to redirect him with a smack. The lack of your tail makes itself known again and you spin slightly out of control as the hulking man clips you, your return hit only serving to upset his balance as well.

On the edge of your vision you notice more adventurers filing out of the guild an beginning to form a wide circle around the spot where you're fighting. The sound of metal on metal reaches your ears but you don't know if you dare look away from your opponent to check it.

You slide back away from the muscled idiot as you return to your feet. You're not really feeling the urgency in this situation. Sure he's strong but he's just a human. A really strong human is probbaly just about on your level, you're pretty sure. On your level when you aren't being fueled by the POWER OF THE SUN. Which handily remains in the sky and shining on you.

The giant glowing reminder in the sky suggests to you that this might be a good time to try and squeeze some practice in combat basking out. You could really go for a bask about now. You close your eyes to try and settle into the right mindset but then realize that won't work. Eyes have to stay open and on the human. Doing this while required to pay attention to other stuff is somewhat harder.

You see the human recovering his footing and turning to bull rush you again. Maneuvering out of his way you feel the already fragile state of your bask crumble as you think about fighting and moving at the same time. Frantically you try to bring it back but that just makes it fall apart faster.

Then a meat fist slams into your jaw and you go down in a spin. You shake your head and look up to see meathulk is about to follow up his punch with a kick. You may have misjudged his strength.

Behind him you catch sight of Nytora who is crossing blades with a man in a deep hooded cloak you think you remember was sitting with meathulk. From the glance you get she seems to have her problems well in claw.

You roll onto you back and kick out at the meathulk's knee, your aim is spot on and the knee collapses, which unfortunately drops his raised foot on you before you were in a good position to dodge. His weight slams onto your chest before he falls beside you. You hear something in your chest creek and you get the wind knocked out of you, but you muscle through it. You once woke up to find mom sleeping almost on top of you. You've dealt with heavier.

While he's trying to get up you take the opportunity to kick meathulk in the side and put him completely on the ground. Then you try to catch your breath.

The sound of Nytora's fight still echoes in the street. You can't see what's happening but you do here one exchange that's punctuated by a small blue stone skipping across the road to slide to a stop near you. That looks a lot like her water stone.

You flip back onto your feet and take a quick second to get some air back in your lungs. Beside you meathulk rols onto his back and starts to sit up. You're not having any of that so you kick him in the face and he goes down again. Nytora appears to have her opponent well in claw. You look over in time to see her drive her sword's pommel into the cloaked man's chest then follow up by slamming it into his face.

Looking down at your opponent you figure you should get back to work. You wind up to drop an elbow on top of him and catch his eyes widening at the last second before he starts to roll out of the way. You put some oomph into your legs and kick off the ground harder than you'd planned, leaping into the air and spinning over your opponent to spike your other elbow into him as his roll ends. You hear something crack in his ribcage and your growing crowd of spectators make a sympathetic noise. You can feel the press of their gaze weighing on you. They seem entertained.

You look over to Nytora and find her holding her stunned opponent up.

How do finish?

You exchange a look with Nytora and then glance at the crowd. The two of you come to the same conclusion. You bend over your fallen opponent and pull him to his feet, he rises and looks like he wants to hit you so you belt him one and turn to check on Nytora. She's ready too so you quickly pull meathulk by his arms and force him to spin with you for a moment before releasing him toward Nytora in the same moment she does the same with her man.

Your opponent is a bit less punch drunk and it shows as he almost manages to control his collision with his friend. They rebound off each other and lurch back toward you and your time clone. In a weird moment of synchronocity you and Nytora both move in perfect unison as you make a short run up and jump, planting your feet into your respective victim's chests and smashing them back into each other again. You hear the sound of skulls colliding as you drop and roll back to your feet, Nytora mirroring you perfectly on the other side of the unconscious duo between you.

The crowd starts cheering. You didn't think it was that a double drop kick was that great but you'll take what you can get. On the bright side no one appears to want to run you out of time. On the ground your opponent is shrinking as his muscles return to their original size, the injuries on his legs open up again.

Nytora seems amused as she recovers her water stone. Cheering needs no translation.

You face you crowd of bloodthirsty fans and grab one of Nyora's hands before raising them in a victory pose. The crowd eats it up so you do a quick circuit of the circle and make a big show of it. You says some nice things about thanking everyone for their attention, and for not calling the guards. A couple adventurers step forward to slap you on the back and shake your hand. It's kind of a blur actually. You see Nytora getting the same treatment and just nodding and looking pleasant, though she clearly has no idea what anyone is saying to her. After a few minutes of mingling you run into the guildmarm who is nudging your foes with a foot. They're not terribly responsive.

"I thinks they need a doctor," you tell her as the crowd starts to break up.

"Yeah," she says slowly, "Yeah they do." She turns to the crowd. "Has anyone seen Aster?!"

"You sent her group out this morning," a voice calls back from the group filing back into the pub that serves as headquarters for the adventurers.

"Crap, I did," she mumbles to herself. She turns back to you and waves you off. "Our good healer will be back in a couple hours, if they don't keep til then they never had business in this business anyway." She shouts back to the crowd. "SOMEONE GET THESE TWO STOWED AWAY BEFORE THE STATUES PITCH A FIT!"

A couple people break off from the group and drag your enemies back into the guild building with them. You're pretty sure that takes care of that.

"AND DON'T GET THEIR BLOOD ON MY FLOOR!" she hollers again. "Sorry about that, we don't get a lot of lizards through here," she says apologetically.

You shrug. It wasn't her fault.

"You two need anything else?"

"Can we haves their job?" you ask poking a thumb at the blood trail that ends at the door to the guild. It's not much of a blood trail. You think Nytora's was bleeding from the nose or something.

"What? Being an adventurer?" she asks, "That doesn't need my permission, you just go do stupid suicidal things until you get rich or get bored. Though if you want in the guild that's a bit harder. Let me know how that job goes for the wizards and we'll talk."

You nod and wave goodbye and the woman waves you off and heads back into the building. She immediately starts yelling at someone. Nice lady.

"Where to now?" Nytora asks.

"The lady saids that the shopkeeper ripped us off of a lot of money," you tell her. "I think we should looks into that."

Nytora looks at her hands and thing layer of blood covering them from breaking the little one's face.

"Then we can finds out what a bathhouse is like," you add. She nods at this.

"We could use a bath," she agrees.

The two of you find you way back to the shop from earlier in short order. The front entrance sas the store is closed for the evening so you make your way around back. You find a young man sitting on the box with your package in it. He seems in no hurry to do anything as he's smoking something that smells quite foul and staring off into space.

You walk over to the box, Nytora following closely. The boy sees you but just kind of stares like he's not sure if you're real or not. You blink at him and wave Nytora to help you lift the bale out.

"What are you smoking?" you ask as you wrestle it out. It looks intact. You're pretty sure none of it's missing.

"I'unno," he shrugs, "I stole it from my dad's stash." He looks at the bale as you secure it to Nytora's back. "I think that's my dad's." He says hesitantly.

"No, it's ours," you tell him.

"Then why was it in our box?" he asks

"Why are you smoking out here?" you ask him in return.

He stops to think for a moment before shrugging. "It's as good a place as any."

"That's why," you tell him.

That seeems to confuse him for a second but he eventually nods and comprehension dawns on his face.

"Makes sense."

"Do you know anyplace that'd buy this?" you ask pointing at the bale.

"Uhm, my dad would but he doesn't really like lizards. He'd probably try to cheat you. Uh, you could hit the trade guild. They buy most stuff and have a good rep. I was thinking I'd sell the shop to them when I inherit it. Y'know, let someone good at this job do it." He nods to himself.

"Your dad would cheat us?" you ask, innocence shining in your voice.

"Pfft, yeah. He's only got an entire scrapbook for the times he's ripped off some monster or another," the kid laughs. You get the feeling he hasn't realized you're not a drug induce hallucination. You see no reason to remedy this.

"Scrapbook?"

"Oh," he looks down at his hands and makes a book like shape, "It's like this big thing full of papers that show how much he's made from deals with monsters. Mostly lizards. He keeps copies of his contracts in there too."

"His work contracts?"

"No, just the monster ones," the kid says, shrugging, "Not like they ever read them, or come back to make sure they're being fulfilled."

What useful information.

"Which way did you say that trade guild was?" you asked, pointing a couple different directions.

"Oh, it's down by the harbor near the east gate. They attach their main office building to this big warehouse. They move a lot of shit," the kid giggles at the end. You're not sure why they would buy and sell shit but then you don't know about a lot of things. There's probably money in it though. You should look into it.

He continues to rattle on and you pay half attention to it as he continues.

"Well, thanks you for the warnings," you tell the boy, "We'll be sure to keeps them in mind."

You step away then a thought occurs to you. The coin pouch the shopkeep gave you earlier would do more good with this youth no doubt. Also it's a good idea to give refunds when doing a product recall. Handing the bag over you wave goodbye.

"Please takes that with our apologies," you tell him. You don't clarify and he seems quite happy to pocket the pouch. You walk away with Nytora and she forces you to take the bale since the sun is still up, though quickly reaching the horizon. You tell her everything the boy said and she has the same mix of amused and annoyed responses you did.

"Maybe I'll comes back here later tonight," she ponders aloud.

"Hm?"

"Well, I feels like we may need to make sure he doesn't owes anyone more money. Kuru saids that he was the person everyone dealt with didn't she?"

"She did says that," you agree, "I hads the impression it was usually her family or ours that did the tradings though."

"Then it's even more important," she nods. You don't need to see her expression to know that she's looking forward to mischief. Maybe if you can stay awake you can tag along.

It takes you a while to find the trade guild with the directions given, having to double back to the harbor takes a while. Once you reach it you find most of the shops and stalls on the streets next to it are in the middle of packing up and a couple of boats, ships, boats, whatever are pulling out for the night or posting guards. It is definitely getting around dinner time.

The trade guild is a large building and easily found. The attached warehouses and open trade areas could easily accomodate mom. More worringly they're shutting their gates and securing their goods as you approach. A man in dark clothes who is tallying things up takes note of your approach and casts a critical eye over the both of you before smiling warmly.

"We are sellings this bale. We are looking for a new place to sells it after the last place cheated us badly," you tell him.

"You mean 'tried to cheat you?'" he asks.

You blink at him. "What did I say?" you ask, hoping he takes your statement as language confusion.

He shakes his head and gestures at the bale. "What do you have there?"

"George and Tina," you tell him."

"Jorgeanita," Nytora corrects you.

"Jorgeanita," you correct yourself, trying not to let embarassment appear. It's really bad when the lizard that doesn't even speak the language is correcting you.

The man's eyes widen but then he frowns.

"I'll admit we'd be most interested with trading with you. The Leviathan Trade Guild is renowned for honest deportment in its dealings with people from all walks of life. Unfortunately our rare goods department closed early today to accomodate a personal issue on the part of our department head. If you'd like we can schedule an appointment first thing tomorrow and hopefully get you turned around quickly," he explains sadly.

Well that's disappointing.

"Do you haves a coin exchange? I haves apparently some very old coins."

"Of course. Our money changers operate until sunset, and no later. May I see the money to be changed so I can direct you to the correct stall?"

You show it to him and expression twists again.

"I'm afraid I led you astray," he says. "These coins are a bit older than I thought you meant. They're more collectables at this point, though with old currency tables we be able to melt them down for their value in metals. If you like we can have someone appraise them for historical value tomorrow as well."

"We would likes to get both taken care of tomorrow, please," you tell him and his expression brightens.

"Excellent, just a moment please." He whistles through the gate and a boy runs over from a desk covered in paper. He whispers some things to the boy, who looks at you with an awed expression before retreating to the desk again. He shuffles some papers, writes a couple things down and then returns with a pair of wood chits. He passes them through the gate tot he man and he in turn hands them to you.

He indicates one and explains, "This will be your identification when you come in for your appointment tomorrow. Please feel free to head in to our main office building. The other is a token which should be honored at most inns in town offering a free meal and place to stay the night. Please accept it with out apologies for the inconvenience."

You blink at the chits and stow them away with a thank you.

He nods. "We hope you continue to do business with us in the future, and hope you don't suffer any more near misses while you are in town. If you run into any trouble, please let us know and we'll do what we can to help."

You nod and tell Nytora what happened. She, like you, is annoyed with the delay but the prospect of an easy free meal appeals greatly. Together you backtrack back to the bathhouse near the wizard tower and find it is attached to an inn that offers the use of the bath as an extra service. Upon further inquiry you find they'll accept your token as well.

In short order you're in a large open air bath that is apparently fueled by a hot spring. Sliding into it you immediately go limp as the warmth wraps around you. It's possibly the second best thing to basking you've ever experienced. You're terrified what would happen if the sun were still up. If Nytora is anything to go by, you'd probably stay in here until you died. You spend a long time just floating in the water, listening to bits of conversation from the people who didn't flee the water as soon as two alligator sized lizard entered it. Before long you force Nytora to rouse herself and you go over the plans for tomorrow.

"We'll hits the trade guild again first thing," you tell her, "Then once we actually haves money we can visit the wizards again to find out what fixing your thing will cost."

Nytora looks at the necklace still hanging around her neck. It appears quite harmless and she sighs and lets it drop again. Her expression darkens.

"Should we bothers?" she asks.

"What do you means?"

"It will just be a temporary fix, right?" she says, "What's the point of delaying the inevitable?"

What do you say to that?

Also she is only us in an extraordinarily slantways line of logic to begin with. Personality wise and mentally she is clearly a different entity of her own. Especially seeing as she has a different skillset from us entirely (primarily more sword combat based, plus precision magic while we have mostly "lol wizard" magic.

To those who don't know, the former allows you to kill someone out of a crowd with ease, the latter allows you to haphazardly incinerate that entire crowd to the ground with you in it. Both are good in there own niche way

"Cuz dyings a second time would suck and you might not even get a lizard again," you say mostly to yourself.

"What?"

"I said you're great and I like you!" you tell her in a perfect cover no one can see though. "Besides something really terrible might happen if we don't put it on hold."

"Magical abomination, I think was the words you translated," Nytora says levelly.

"Right. Besides if you tick around longer there're better chances of finding a solution."

"In the swamp..."

"Well, we may have to look outside the swamp but there's lots of magicians how hard can it be?"

"You've just doomed us both," Nytora informs you, "Auntie says you aren't allowed to say stuff like that."

"Man, Auntie is smart..."

"Yeah..."

"Just bear with it for a while. Something has to turn up and just ending it now with no answers seems like losing."

"I guess," she agrees.

The two of you go back to floating for a while before the siren call of food lures you out. You discover something very interesting that evening. Active lizards can out eat most humans.

Later that night after a couple hours spent chatting with each other and random humans, or translating for Nytora who took interest in a random human, you sit in the room you were provided and stare out over the town at the ocean. Nytora is checking her gear and you notice something.

"Where's your knife?"

She looks embarassed and holds her face in her hands. "..."

"What? I couldn't hear that."

"I LOST IT. I think I left it in that guy I stabbed earlier," she admits.

"When did you stab him? I didn't see a knife."

She shrugs. "I'm good at stabbing without being noticed. But apparently I still can't remember to get my knife back afterward. Ugh!"

"Still going to hit the store?"

"It seems like fun. You going to sleep?"

"I'm coming. You may need help."

Nytora looks a bit offended so you continue.

"Also, it sounds like fun and I'm bored."

She nods at that. Apparently that's a more reasonable excuse.

The two of you get all the stuff you think you'll need for robbing someplace. Mostly rope and stabbing implements. You briefly discuss the merit in disguising yourselves but you're fairly sure you're the only two lizards in town so stealth is more your friend here.

Slipping out of the window to your room you slip into a nearby alley and use all the backstreets you can find to get back to the shop. It's slightly hampered by the presence of magic lights illuminating the streets, emanating from the empty cavity that is the head of the shield man statues they keep everywhere. There aren't that many people out and about after dark otherwise. A lack of light and cost of light sources probably fuels that well.

When you finally arrive back at the back of the shop you find the boy is long gone, and the back door is locked. A window is open on the second floor though. Your keen lizard senses tell you that someone is awake inside.

>You might need something that'll act as a distraction in case you're caught inside

You look at Nytora as the both of you cling to the wall by the window of the shop. The room is dark but you can hear faint snoring. You wave Nytora in first and she slips into the room without a sound. Below you hear someone stumbling around. You crawl into the window before anyone can see you.

The boy from earlier today is sleeping in here. There's also a hideous stink in the room and you have to cover your nose as you sneak through. Nytora is ahead of you doing the same. You ease open the boy's door and find a hallway that appears to lead to a couple other rooms, one at the end, one across the way that'll lead over the store front, with the stairs leading down in the other direction. The room across the hall has a light coming out of it and you can hear scratching sounds inside. You share a look with Nytora as you decide what to do.

Nytora moves off to look down the stairs while you crack open the door to the lit room. Mercifully this door is quiet. If someone is in and out of here at all hours of the night it's probably out of consideration. You peek inside and see the shopkeeper hunched over a crate counting things and occasionally writing on a board. He's got a couple of crates to go so you've probably got some time before he's done. That's assuming he doesn't find anything else to do.

You feel someone pound your shoulder softly and close the door before turning to glare. Nytora glares back, obviously annoyed at your choice of where to investigate. You exchange silent looks and gestures for a minute before agreeing just to stick together. Apparently Nytora didn't hear anyone downstairs so you're clear there. The two of you listen at the door to the last room on this floor and hear nothing. For a second you thought you heard something but the noise was so weird you play it off as a snore from the boy's room. You ease the door open and start looking around. It's a fairly normal bedroom. Bed, dresser, wardrobe, a tub in one corner for water. The only thing out of place is a little upside down pot.

As you're looking around leafing through the wardrobe you hear something scoot. You turn to where Nytora she's stopped digging through the dresser to look at you. The both of you look down between you and find the bowl has moved a couple inches.

You share a look with Nytora then gesture for her to pick up the bowl. She shakes her head and points for you to do it. You spend a few more seconds arguing silently about who should mess with the mystery bowl when it scoots another couple inches, this time louder and more vehemently. You sigh and see Nytora doing the same. Together you both get on either side of the bowl and silently count.

On three you tip your claws under it and flip the bowl upside down, immediately backing away for whatever comes out, though not so far you can't see. Instead the bowl lands rightside up and you realize it was heavier than it should have been, for good reason. THe inside of the bowl is painted black, such a dark black you have trouble picking out shapes in it. The only two things you can pick out are the feeling of magic moving around in it, and a pair of eyes looking around wildly.

Then the eyes stop and orient on you. Somewhere in the back of your mind you recall seeing something similar recently but you can't place it immediately. Then the expression in the bowl turns angry.

We're pretty deep in the swamp from them and from what we've gotten the lizards aren't a big fan of spiders, these might not be river lizards but they certainly aren't fans of spiders.
