One of my PC races is a race of giant spiders, but I need a bit of help fleshing out their history.

>lawful good
>scholars who treasure the arts
>rich magical history
>tomes are written as webs
>wear chains webs woven with crystal and colored glass, which they use as whips
>wear silky woven veils and shawls

Basically, I'm looking to develop things like tool usage, construction, and things like that for a non-humanoid race without resorting to "everything is webs" (there's a little of that, but I don't want to overuse it- only in bits where they might apply artistry.)

If they are actual giant spiders and not anthropomorphic, your answer is large communal buildings, structures and tools based around beings of their body type [so wide hallways, beds on the floor or webs, no concept of stairs because wallclimbing], etc, shit like that.

Since total realism is impossible, make some of it just humorous people versions of animal things. Like you enter spider town and BOOM.

Trapdoor spider bursts out of the ground holding jewels and watches in each leg above ground.

"Hey two-legs, wanna buy a watch?"

Also marriage and divorce law would be less ridiculous then IRL
Zing!

>no concept of stairs

Ooh, that's cool. Whole temples built on the sides and ceiling of caves, labyrinths that spread out in three dimensions....

>web beds

Yeah I thought of that.

As for construction, I think mud might be my best bet? I'm not sure of the feasibility of stone carving with no thumbs. Or hands.
>>
>>41537691
Nah don't go down that road. People make tools to make up for shit they don't have, so just assume these beings do likewise. Don't assume that lack of hands is an obstacle, they can invent technology just as easily as we can. Especially if they've got like two specialized multijoint 'fingers' at the ends of their front legs for fine manipulation.

Their dwellings would primarily be based on the environment in which they live, and supplemented with web. Instead of "Everything is made OF web" think "Everything is made WITH web"

Large communal log cabins held together with web, massive tents held down with web, dwarf-esq tunnel cities with web as structural support, and yes, massive stonebrick structures with web as the mortar.
>>
>>41537612

Can you marry the spiders
>>
How advanced do you want them to be technologically?
>>
Remember that even if you have wall-climbing, multiple stories are still useful for storing stuff, especially stuff that takes up as much space in a pre-digital age as literature.
Big common areas like town halls and places of worship though? expect high roofs and as much if not more business and socialisation taking place on the walls as on the floor.
>>
>>41537744

I hadn't thought of tents; I like that a lot. Big gypsy tents in the woods crawling with spiders.

>tools
Hmmm... Perhaps some kind of greave-like "claws" that attach to their front pairs of legs, letting them dig into stone like four small pickaxes or spades?

They also have the one of the primaru brewing/potionmaking arts in the setting, using in little webby packets full of stewed plant and animal matter in digestive fluid. They carry them like little canteens.
>>
>>41537782

It's a fantasy pseudo-mideval setting, so maybe up to metalworking.

On the learning and mathematics side, they're more advanced, along the lines of China. Big focus on learning and the arts.

>>41537749
i cant say it has not happened
>>
>>41537803

You could even have sky bridges and multi-storied roadways stretching between buildings.
>>
Mostly I like that they're Lawful Good. You should have no evil or wild giant spiders in the setting, just so there's no confusion and there's purely a reverse reaction.

Like you're wandering through the woods late at night, you hear something in the trees, you look around with your lantern, you're freaking out, its big, it drops!

"Whew. Its just an Arrachidian. Good evening!"

>"Good evening two-legs! Lost?"

"You could say that."
>>
>>41537991

Yeah, they're the only types of giant spiders. There might be regular-sized spiders too, but I haven't decided.

There are, however, different subraces of spiders in different lands- big buff hairy ones in the south, lanky graceful writing spiders to the east, with the local variety being like wolf spiders.

But yeah, as a whole they don't really make war with other races. You might get a bad egg here and there, but not man eaters. Maybe bullies and the power-hungry beurocrat or mage here and there.

They're one of humanity's strongest allis in the setting.
>>
>>41538064

>>
>>41537854

>>
>>41537612
So how do you compensate for the fact that if injured, spiders will leak fluid until death? No clotting. Probably works different for them? How?

Probably magic lets them get that big without either collapsing under their own weight or not being able to breath.

Giant spiders have always been a staple in fantasy settings.

I think the reason you got called out on autism is because trying to apply real world logic to a fantasy setting is pretty useless.

You might as well have asked OP how there are elves in The Lord of the Rings if elves don't exist in real life.
>>
>>41538206

He's sorta got a point though- getting around the square cube law is basically a necessity nowadays, because a few realism-obsessed assholes bandy it about anytime a mech or giant creature is introduced in anything. It's basically the Anti-Fun Law.

I should make a thread for cataloguing ways to get around it.

You gotta remember that the Nerubians were just the Mages / Scientists / Librarians of one massive True Race they composed alongside the Mantids and the Qiraj.

OP said they treasure the arts.

Does music count as art?

Because I can imagine an insane festival where the spiders go and spread a very fine steel cable-like thread all over some massive ceremonial towers. In creating this web, they stick seemingly random objects of various weights along different threads and strings. The spiders then go about making music via a manic rush over the webs as they simultaneously pluck their strings and adjust the location of their weights, essentially making a massive, multi-spider operated guitar.

Add in things like wind chimes and whistles that go off when there's a strong wind, and you can make this ceremony some kind of coming of age ceremony that harkens back to those spiders that make little web parachutes and scatter them into the wind.

Not that secret. But yeah.

I'd say if you like the idea but want more serious do Araeana or whatever (the EVIL ones) but make that one good/socialized with humans, or make all of them "not quite as evil" as those ones are. They do seemingly have little areas in their cave complexes with purposes and organization, it's not a stretch they might do things like you suggest. Nephil and Slith do and some of them are almost complete savages and probably not as smart as the average Araeana. I mean, a lot of Slith farm giant lizards and mushrooms, and live in mud huts. They have the traditional Slith Spear, but that's not necessarly complex. You could have a fork like spear of that nature made out of hardwood or bronze easily.
>>
>>41537612
So to summarise:
Spiders live in tall cavernous structures with spindly walkways spanning the space.

The Spiders have a tremendous love of tea, little sacks full of all sorts of delicious things soaked in hot water. Delightful.

Spiders have a great cultural affinity for music.
As a species that has always used the vibrations of their webs music was simply a
way to spread this affinity through the air itself.

Multi-story harps and the like are a common sight in the realm of the spiders.

The spider's patron god is Achael, god of Wisdom, Forethought and Fate.

Spiders have a great propensity for intellectual pursuits, such as math, geometry and the arts.

OP here. Mostly they're still in the development phase; I wanted to work put their culture, architecture, and tech level before I started building on them. I'm definitely using ideas from this thread like >>41539076 and >>41540461 though.

Their religion and culture was mostly based on preserving history (perhaps relating to spiderwebs being fragile.)

Their religion is mostly based around their creator god "writing" the world into existence, which ties into their love of the arts. Due to their belief that everything's already been written, they've a predilection towards predestination and the concept of fate- prophesy is a big deal in their religion, and Norn analogues are some of their primary gods.

For physiology, they're mostly just spiders the size of a man or a little bigger. The Europe/Eastern Europe variety that exist in the primary setting are like wolf spiders, with a downy fur that varies in color - thanks to your pic I may have it able to grow out into long spider fluff on cute girls or sages.

A lot of people seem to think that giant insects could actually climb like small insects, but that is not the case at all.

In truth they have extremely tiny claws/hairs (called tarsal claws or tarsi for plural) that grab onto the microbumps in surfaces that appear smooth - they are only capable of actually doing so because the insect (or animal like frogs / geckos) are so small and lightweight. In very rare cases some insects actually make use of adhesive pads but this is rarer.

If you were to scale up insects to the size of giant spiders they in most cases (unless they were EXTREMELY lightweight) would not be able to climb like smaller insects do.

They might be quite dextrous, they might be able to climb well on rough surfaces, but they would not be scuttling up massive inclines or scooting across ceilings.

>>41544467

>>
>>41544819
A dog sized spider might be able to climb quite a bit. A car sized spider, depending on the size of its legs and the sheer number of tarsi might be able to climb a whole ton of things too... but i'd be inclined to say that truthfully, these spiders would end up losing a lot of their ability to climb crap.

They might resort to tactics more like the ogre faced spider, which weaves a small net and holds it between their forelegs, wraps a prey creature in it quickly and then further secures it before administering a lethal bite.

I'm not trying to be anti-fun and dictate whats possible in your roleplay by saying "NO THIS COULDN'T EVER BE A THING". I'm just saying that giant sized spiders probably aren't going to climb as well as people might think they could based off of common perceptions about spiders.

Could they climb still? Yes
Would they be as good at climbing as smaller spiders? No.

Applying a bit more critical thought can take you down a different avenue, like the one person that suggested that they might have 'hands' on some of their legs so as to allow for tool-making.

More on architecture: they would be more likely to use cranes and elevators than ramps and stairs. Also maybe zip- and swing-lines between elevated positions.
Arts and leisure: Colors and shapes appear different through spider-eyes, make geometric shapes strange or unusually balanced, and depict the colors as drab or bright in places the opposite would be expected. Parachuting and hang-gliding make for fun and unique pastimes, especially in a medieval setting.
Gear and technology: Even with a grasping claw, many tasks that we might do one-handed would probably occupy two or more appendages (by necessity or preference), and often would include the use of mandibles and/or spinnerets. A human attempting to use spidergear would find it awkward if not impossible.

So what are other spidery things?

Apparently their cuisine is bug tea in stomach acid.

I was thinking about the little digging claw attachments OP someone mentioned, and started thinking about bladed tubes their legs could fit inside.

Of course, they don't have hands to work metal, so what if their metalwork had to be cast or bent over carved stone forms?

I could see a deep hole being carved in a stone and metal drizzled into it to make twisty metalwork jewelry. Or like OP mentioned, armor could be bits of flat stones in web fabric. Imagine a spider in a white silk veil with lapis worked into it.

Spiders can sense movement in their webs, right?
So, while it's useful for them to be able to talk to other races, it would be neat to have the communicate to each other by tapping their legs on the ground; they have eight legs, so their communication system would be very quick and complex, conveying great amounts of information in a short time.

Also, if we put this together with the music thing said earlier in the thread, this would mean that their cities would be completely silent, with only faint echoes of music in the air.

I'm also imagining cities high up between canyons, stretching from one side to the other and not touching the ground

>Quipus, sometimes known as khipus or talking knots, were recording devices historically used in the region of Andean South America. A quipu usually consisted of colored, spun, and plied thread or strings made from cotton or camelid fiber. For the Inca, the system aided in collecting data and keeping records, ranging from monitoring tax obligations, properly collecting census records, calendrical information, and military organization. The cords contained numeric and other values encoded by knots in a base ten positional system. A quipu could have only a few or up to 2,000 cords. The configuration of the quipus have also been "compared to string mops."Archaeological evidence has also shown a use of finely carved wood as a supplemental, and perhaps more sturdy, base on which the color-coordinated cords would be attached

Honestly I would think that this arachnid species would work better as lawful neutral, with the whole "Fates being written" vibe going on. Sure, they'd still kind and courteous, but they aren't gonna fuck with fate, meaning if you're destined to burn at the steak, then they'll be the ones setting you on it. Inversely, if the tapestry says you'll be a great hero, then they'll do everything they can to make sure that happens, no matter the expense. Just some food for thought,
>>
>>41537612

I think challenging a society of readers of fate with a tear that only they can repair would be pretty tasty fluff. They have to develop some motivation and confidence to fix something only they can fix.

Fun cobflict between what is right and societal expectations. Could even lead to a schism. More history for the spiders!

Thanks for the clarification, I guess i was assuming their god is omniscient enough for such things (And maybe it is, it just likes fucking around with spiders) I have another thing i want to be clarified, what do these spiders think of fiction? Since they believe the world was written into existence, do they think mere mortals can do that too? Would it be considered an affront to their god, of would it be considered a highly religious sentiment meant as flattery?
>>
>>41537744
>Everything is made WITH web
Web strand woven with shards of rock or metal: Saw.

Web woven with river clay and baked in a stone oven: Specialized ceramics.

Also, giant spiders could use the giant hairs on their legs to do fine woodwork--decorative carving, woodcuts, etc. They could probably use them as quills, too. Dip them in ink and write long spidery rants on parchment... made with web.

MFW Spider Bob Ross rolls up, the hairs on his legs covered in all the colors of the rainbow.

I'd say they'd be all about telling stories- weaving worlds like that of their god (the Mother Spider? >>41538437.)

More spider culture things.

Annual celebration that involves things like >>41540461 but now you turn it into a full blown circe de solei (or however it's spelled) with spiders throwing themselves off towering stone monoliths with bungee silks (or none at all). And since spiders have spider tea (probably had drugs) and probably know how to stick shiny things up in their webs, the whole thing becomes one annual insane show that people will pay good money to see (or rather, to have an escort take them there so they don't get eaten by the antagonistic giant wasps).

You can also create two spider groups that antagonize each other. Hell, maybe even three.

The first would consist of spider species that involve having the spider on the ground; trapdoor spiders, the ones that bury themselves in sand and ambush, etc. Tend to be like police trolls where they sit and wait before jumping out (from the ground). They have some ideological conflict with the "air" spiders involving (as expected) the ground.

Second group are mostly traditional spider species that build nests in high places and may drop down with thin silk strands or ambush birds. An airy, flighty people who contrast with (as they call them) their unwashed eight legged cousins on the ground.

Third group are spiders that live exclusively in massive trees that grow in desert regions where annual flooding occurs. They have an interesting form of agriculture that makes use of the annual floods. They wrap their trees in massive blankets of webs, and even go so far as to construct highways between their trees, which also double as a method to collect pesky birds that try to eat their crops and show off their architectural skills. Both other groups steer clear of this group due to a perception of insanity that's associated with their preference for water.
>>
>>41581628
Go further with the water spiders. They have a culture of swimming and traversing to the bottom of a flooded plane for the sake of finding items, or fishing.

>More on the three spider sub-species, who I will call Ground Spiders, Sky Spiders, and Water Spiders, respectively.

>Ground Spiders
Generally more outwardly martial than their two cousin species/groups/subcultures. Much of their culture often features a strong darkness motiff, with patience and explosive, instantaneous strength being seen as virtues. Many of their fables involve heroes emerging victorious due to clever tactics involving camouflage and ambushes. Tree/boulder tossing is a sport.

>Air Spiders
These are the more traditional spiders. Their culture has a stronger emphasis on the arts (tapestries especially), where the dexterous movements are highly valued, leading to a large number of weaver-artists and "sky dancers" (they "dance" on suspended webs, or suspended via very few safety strands). Sky spiders are stereotyped as being more adventurous and welcoming, but at the same time they are known to be a little pompous.

>Water Spiders
Much more reclusive than their two brother subcultures. Due to their sedentary nature, the water spiders place a greater importance on knowledge, records, and history; thus massive repositories of carefully hand woven scrolls can be found in their massive tree homes. Their culture puts a greater emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge and skills and using it with respect to their environment - whereas a Ground Spider hero would make a simple trap, or the Air Spider would use acrobatic tricks to lure their foe into a web, traditional Water Spider heroes are typically slow, methodical, and much more willing to combine their webs in new and novel ways to solve problems, such as their highways, which are actually made of magically warped wood/leaves reinforced by their silk. Water Spiders have learned the art of swimming, but will take offense at being compared to water striders. They are also stereotypically fond of fish and having a natural leaning towards the study of nature.

>More spiders!

Ground spiders, while known for living in the earth, are actually only decent earth workers. They employ a race of large-ish ants (some argue it's a form of slavery, however the ant monsters are not known to complain) to build their large underground cities and above ground outposts. Animal (or monster) husbandry is well developed among the Ground Spiders. Many of their dishes involve meats, fruits, tubers, cheeses, and strong herbs partially cooked and thrown into various containers to allow to ferment. According to legend the first of these dishes were created when an early Ground Spider sat in wait for an ambush for half a year and had forgotten his lunch stored in a sack and buried in the earth to keep cool.

Meanwhile, the food of the Air Spiders is seen as the "basic" spider cuisine that often features one food stuffed into another. Since the Air Spiders had much more exposure to the outside world compared to the Ground and Water Spiders, their foods often call for ingredients only available via trade, and as a result, their agricultural abilities are considered rudimentary. They are also considered the most "cosmopolitan" of the three groups.

If the Ground Spiders are considered somewhat backwards, the Air Spiders cosmopolitan, then the Water Spiders would be considered highly secretive and insular. They are highly wary of outsiders - this may be the result of a seemingly natural feud that has developed between them and local man-sized octopi known to raid their fisheries.

>Sky spiders
Bear in mind that it is mechanically possible (though incredibly silly) for a human being to be lifted airborne in the same manner as a ballooning spider. Ergo, it is extremely possible for a human sized spider to generate its own ballooning parachute. These are essentially many strands of very fine silk (it's where we get the word 'gossamer' from) that spread out in a triangular net due to electrostatic repulsion.

spiders are disgusting

Oh, corollary to that, a very slightly denser atmosphere with slightly higher oxygen balance (hardly enough to be noticeable, less than the difference in air quality between Addis Ababa and San Francisco, for example) would be enough to increase the density of aeroplankton almost fourfold. You could have spiders literally 'sky trawling' with multi-kilometer long seine nets swept through the sky

Loving this thread, wish I could think of something to contribute, drawing a bit of a blank right now.

Spider zen archers, y/n?
>>
>>41584683
How would that even work?
>>
>>41584832
Super high strength bowstrings pulled back two front arms with small metal hooks attached to the ends.
>>
>>41584320
Now have a giant one of those chase the party whilst making didgeridoo noises. Everyone is fleeing whilst the druid is busy shouting back that it only wants to perform to you, not eat you.
>>
>>41585060
And how do they hold the bow itself?
>>
>>41586290
Other legs, more hooks. Or webbing
>>
>>41586472
I'm imagining something that looks more like a ballista than a bow as we know it.

Frankly this concept of Ballistae Spiders sounds fucking awesome to me.

Oooh, perhaps a back-mounted ballista that is retracted by a pulley system...

I wonder if the anatomy of spiders, being low to the ground with wise-spread legs, would lend them towards portable siege weaponry that they strap to their backs.

Check that out OP.

The spiders will probably have professions for eating certain things and weaving with them, I know some hunting spiders can weave electric blue elastic webbing.

Clothing/decoration: In the book "The Calculating God" there is a spiderish alien and it's clothing was a strip of blue fabric wound around the torso, weaving between it's various legs. Thus you have culture, and a useful harness for tools.

I might also suggest they wear a dress/veil around the edge of their abdomen. Depending on how they are sexually differentiated the males might wear gloves/Veils on their pedipalps (Or Manipalps if they are their main manipulator organ, which means the males might not have ones very different from the females) Thus shame/body modesty.

People have mentioned that they wouldn't have a concept of stairs. Take that further, they barely have a concept of 'down.'

Yes, you fall down, but their webs are sticky so they can attach things anywhere. Also since they can climb on walls and ceilings imagine their hallways.

So let's say there are arrows/colors leading you to places in a compound or something. Floor, ceiling, and walls can all be utilized.

A hallway for two way traffic doesn't have to be much wider, just high enough that a spider on the ceiling won't touch the spider on the floor. Or the spider on one wall won't touch the Spider on the other.

Think Esher/The Labyrinth a bit.

Spiders need to eat, right? So what prey animals do they keep?

Beron Bees for Honey (and nosh?) Or Attack Wasps that also make paper walls and shades for them? Giant beetles for the sweet meat inside, their wings for windows, and use their carapace as armor and jewlery?
