Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you visited with your family and invited your sister to go shopping for dangerous magical artifacts.

It is currently the 15th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

It is indeed unfortunate that your father insisted on all of his children learning Rhynian. Granted it is useful for trade with foreigners and in dealings with servants, but had your sister only chosen to address Mortia in Samjan you wouldn't be forced to deal with this rather unfortunate misunderstanding.

Mortia's eyes narrow into a glare and she draws herself up to her full, if rather minuscule, height. Consider she stands at a hair under five and a half feet tall she's not going to be intimidating anyone with looks alone, and almost certainly not your brash and slightly obnoxious sister. She opens her mouth to speak but before she can so much as utter a single word your sister has already cut her off with a sharp gesture.

With all the authority of a woman accustomed to being obeyed Pratima chastises your friend and companion as if she were nothing more than a glorified animal. “How about you stop giving me that impetuous look and start fetching the carriage as I commanded. I would expect the slave masters to have whipped the arrogance out of you but I guess they were slack in their efforts. Do not force me to-”

A wave crashes against the stones of the wharf, sending a spray of water crashing into your sister. The fact that only your sister was hit, despite Mortia standing much closer to the water and you standing right next to Pratima, leads you to believe this was not wholly a natural occurrence. Supposedly your former Master has been teaching Mortia some water magic, you wonder how proficient she's grown?

The spray of cold water has finally managed to shut your sister up long enough for Mortia to get a word in. When she speaks she seems calm, but the fury in her eyes is immense. Perhaps, you'd even say, disproportional. “I am not a slave, you horrendous cunt. I am a woman who could kill you with a thought. You would do well to remember that.”

>Now would probably be a good time to step in, before this comes to blows. Get the gate guards to fetch the carriage and pile everyone in.

Mention that she can actually stand behind her threats and she could probably rival any single samjan wealth possesed.
Also explain to Mortia how it is actually not very surprising that your sister would jump to assumption about her because of social background. Ask her to forget and forgive.

You step between your sister and Mortia adopting a conciliatory tone as you address the both of them. “How about both of you just take a deep breath and try to relax, it was nothing more than a simple misunderstanding.” You turn first to your sister, chiding her lightly whilst simultaneously drawing the saltwater out of her hair and clothes. “You've met Mortia, you saw her with me at the party I hosted. That was barely a week ago. Are you truly that forgetful?”

Pratima clasp her hands behind her back, trying to make herself small. “Well, I mean, I can't be expected to remember the names of everyone I meet.” After a moment's hesitation she relents. “But I suppose that was rude of me. I should have at least bothered to remember who your friends were.” She looks past you, to Mortia. “I'm sorry, for the offense I caused.”

Next you turn to Mortia. She seems somewhat mollified by your sister's apology but you still get the impression that she's in a foul mood. “Now Mortia, you have to understand that to see a human who is not a slave, mercenary, or ambassador of some sort is incredibly rare. It's entirely possible for someone to live for hundreds of years without ever seeing a free human. Pratima's was a mistake that anyone could've made.”

Mortia says nothing for some time but eventually sighs. “I suppose.” is all she says, and it seems to be the only answer you'll be getting. Thus, rather than waste more time dealing with this needless drama you gesture for the two guards standing by the fence, both of whom had been passively observing the stand off, to approach.

You send one of them off to fetch your driver, while the other starts to hitch your camels to the carriage. Eventually your other slaves emerge from within your estate to take care of that while the guards return to the gates. In no time at all you're underway, with Stelios at the reigns, Pratima by your side, and Mortia sitting across from you. The atmosphere in the carriage is oppressive, but everyone seems adamant about ignoring it.

>Try to get an idea for what both of them want. You're definitely getting Mortia some armor, but what about Pratima?

In an effort to get the two of them at least talking, you pose a question. “So, since we're trying to ride a carriage through the streets of El-Amin just after noon we'll probably be in here for a while. How about we resolve what everyone wants out of this trip? We're going to a little hole in the wall storefront I found in the Vatis district some time ago, where I got shields both for myself and Profectus. I also purchased a suit of armor and a trident there. The selection is excellent.”

Mortia seems tentative about the whole affair. “I don't really know much about armor, if I'm being honest. In-” She pauses, glancing briefly towards your sister before continuing. “Well, in my old home I never had a need for armor. I could always either defend myself or stay hidden away from everything. I guess, if we're going into a jungle, I would want something light. Something that won't weigh me down.”

That seems reasonable enough, you suppose. “So something light. Do you particularly care how protective it is? We could get you some leather armor easily enough I'm sure but I'm not sure if it would really serve as any sort of armor.”

Mortia purses her lips contemplatively. “What if we... got something like Fulvia's armor? The robes with plates layered underneath? That seems like sturdy stuff. Oh, and it's all enchanted stuff right? I mean, If what I've seen of Thaddeus mad experiments is any indication of what enchanting can do I could probably just get like a metal harness or something that makes a force field.”

You turn to Pratima. “What about you? Are you looking for armor, or a weapon, or maybe some sort of protective charm? Whatever you're looking for I'm sure we'll be able to find something to serve your purposes.”

Pratima shrugs her shoulders. “I'm not really looking for anything specifically, but I do feel like a weapon or maybe something to help me heal wounds would be really useful. Oh, or something to enhance Nature magic. That would be super useful in the sorts of ruins I've been exploring.”

She holds up her hands, palms up, so you can see the two massive gemstones embedded into her flesh. Her skin has grown in around them, but scar tissue has puckered around the edges of each. You really do question how safe those things could possibly be. “I've found that as I grow more accustomed to these things they grow more useful. They store my vys, but it remains attached to my reserves even while stored, so in effect its like the size of my reserves has been tripled. It means I can pull off spells I have no right to pull off, but my meager talents aren't really enough to make acting as a full fledged Vatis practical. At best I can sort of support my other team members. I think a weapon would or something to heal wounds would really make me more integral to any band of adventurers, meaning I could wring them for a larger share of the loot.”

Your father would be so proud. “I think at the very least we ought to be able to find a weapon, more than that I can't guarantee.” You actually still have the Dragon Staff, which vastly improves one's abilities with Nature Magic. You haven't used it much as you've grown more talented as a Nature Vatis. Perhaps you could gift it to her?

Nah man, the only reason we hit off tge adventuring gig as well as we did was because we grabed that Centurion armor so early. Vys hazmat/perception gear is pretty much the dividing line between successful ruin plundering and getting sucked into a generator.

Let's give her this one freebie so she won't end up dead in a month.

Meh we aren't using it for anything. Maybe a suit of Technician armor? We have like 3 of those and they are damn useful for exploring ruins.

We're probably never gonna do this.

Considering you're about to travel into the heart of Elaudia, a vast jungle populated by the most horrendous creatures the gods could conceive of, giving away the artifact which enhances your Nature Magic is probably a poor idea. You'll just purchase her something when you reach the emporium, and in the mean time try to strike up some semblance of a conversation between the three of you.

Eventually you get Mortia and Pratima chatting about alchemy of all things. Pratima has been looking for a tonic of some sort to help her sleep but the usual remedy, that is to say opium, hasn't been working at all. It leaves her paralyzed in her own body, aware of her surroundings but unable to act. Mortia recommended a concoction composed of valerian root and chamomile stepped in boiling water then drunk once it's cooled. She also recommended avoiding opium for a few months. This led into a conversation about your mother's joint pain, and from there your older sister Halima's horrible headaches.

It turns out your family essentially uses opium to treat any and every ailment they have, a practice Mortia states is simply ignoring the problem rather than treating it. As the carriage rolls to a stop in front of the emporium Pratima and Mortia are just reaching an agreement on when your various and manifold family members can stop by your estate so Mortia can examine them and mix something up to help them with whatever ails them.

Stelios pulls open the door to the carriage and the three of you slide out. You thank the pale elven man, directing him to get the carriage off the road so as to avoid blocking the street and then wait for the three of you to return. That done you descend the steps of the squat, stone building to the doorway set just below ground level.
(1/2)

Its a better version of the pistol we have so you can actually aim and shoot it.

The shop is just as horribly cluttered as you remember it. A masive harp sits pressed against a bookcase flanked on either side by chest made in various styles. Sea shells, oddly decorated helmets, scrolls, books, and all manner of arms and armor lay scattered about. The shopkeep, a man in a long robe and an ornate mask, stands behind a counter silently observing the three of you.

I just thought of what contain life might do. It might make us into a spirit after we die and stop us from passing on. We then could repair our body and rejoin into it. If we cant repair it we can hang out with Riky or the cat.
>>
>>41573873
Or we annihilate the spirit we've been helping all this time and absorb him.
>>
>>41573899
or we help him take over another realm so we can take that spirits realm.
>>
>>41573899
We're gonna need a few thousand years to be able to do that. Cat is a hard match for Sehzade, even suped up on Spice to twice his normal power.
>>
>>41573917
Riky might help us. Cat is scared of him.
>>
>>41573873
Or it does NOTHING since we don't know if it even means life
For all we know it means nature and we can't use nature magic now
>>
>>41573932
Problem being ricky would be an anti-thesis to us and possible destroy us by accident if we made contact. Although I suppose we could just quickly ask him to kill the other spirit. On the other hand we could just Align ourselves with Cat-bro and be power hungry buddies. I doubt we'd buff him much if he killed us.
>>
>>41573941
We actually know the thing for life and contain. Also another option it actually hides our life thing that nature vatus sees and we are invisible to them.

>Towards the end of the memory you see your soul slowly pulling itself back together, and just as it achieves some form of cohesion a hole is torn in the side of the gateway. You sense a massive burst of Fire magic the moment it happens. Your soul is sucked through the tear and spit out of the open gateway you entered through. At least, you think it's the same gate. To be honest they all sort of look the same and the void is pretty much devoid of landmarks. You may have opened a new gate, for all you know.

>Though you can't be certain, you get the sense that the insight you gained was neither an insight into manipulating Fire magic, nor an insight into creating illusions. Rather you get the sense it had something to do with divine essence, or divinity in general, or perhaps it was a strange method of Fire manipulation. You felt as though you were burning away the very fabric of reality when you tore open that hole through which your soul escaped.

>Regardless you're still not wholly certain, and you doubt you'll ever be certain unless you attempt to enter a Gate to Surya's Heart again.
>>

As you begin to wander about the shop in search of anything that stands out, the masked shopkeeper speaks in that quiet, raspy voice of his. It's almost like he's not used to speaking. “I see that you have brought friends this time, Oh Valued Customer. What can I do for you three on this wonderful...” He glances towards a window. “-evening?”

“Closer to afternoon.” Mortia chimes in helpfully. “I'm looking for a suit of armor, preferably something lightweight and suitable for navigating Elaudia.”

Pratima bows her head in greeting. “I am looking for something to help me delve ancient ruins. Preferably either a weapon or something that helps me heal myself and others. That said I don't really have anything in particular in mind.”

Then he looks t you, and you realize that you don't really have an answer. You're not really looking for anything specific. “I think I'll just browse around a bit, I'm mainly here to show the two of them around.”

The masked shopkeeper wheezes out what might be a laugh. As he calms down he addresses Mortia. “Oh, I have just the thing for you, tiny human. It is armor from the far east, imported by the Ancient Rhynians as a curiosity for some noble. A type of lamellar made of glass and Elaudian Steel, very lightweight but surprisingly protective. It is exactly what you need, though...” He glances over his shoulder. “It does have some other less fortunate effects. I will allow you to decide for yourself whether it is worth purchasing.”

He vanishes behind a curtain and Mortia pouts, glancing between you and your sister Pratima. “I'm not tiny, you people are just giant.”

“Actually you're kind of small even for a human.” You comment absentmindedly as you begin scanning the various tables for anything of interest, picking up a book on Ancient Hiacia only to set it aside upon realizing it's just a trade ledger recounting ships docking in El-Amin some several thousand years ago. The owner of this little store seems to have more junk than he knows what to do with, but he has some real gems buried amongst the rubbish.

You find a few items of interest. An old leather belt with rather intricate carvings all around the band, and in the center an array of dozens of gems in various shapes and sizes all surrounding a massive central stone the size of your hand. Inside the central gemstone a figure reminiscent of a dragon, or perhaps some sort of bird, swirls erratically. It's almost like it's trapped inside, struggling to escape.

You're not really sure what it does, so you just drape it over one shoulder to examine later. You also find a book labeled. “The Cradle of Hiacia”, which seems to relate at a glance to the founding of the city and the area around it. You might find something about the Al-Hikars in there. You tuck the book under one arm before continuing on your way.

Nothing else really grabs your interest before the shopkeeper returns, struggling to pull along an ancient suit of armor. It appears as hundreds of tiny little panes of glass in frames of Elaudian Steel, black cloth draped off of the armor as a manner of decoration as well as padding you imagine. It's obviously crafted to fit a man's frame, and a rather broad man at that, but if it's anything like the Elaudian Armor you've dealt with previously it will adjust to fit Mortia.

Before you can ask him about your findings he's already vanished behind the curtain again, emerging only moments later with a massive, ornate mace. Its handle Is made of gold and molten stone, and its head is shaped like a dragon complete with fire streaming between its steel teeth. The horns in particular look vicious, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a blow from those.

He also carries with him a small necklace in the vague shape of a shield. Some sort of protective charm you imagine, such things are fairly common and inexpensive. However, what draws your eye is the glimpse you caught behind the curtain. It was for the briefest of moments, but you saw a crown composed of broken antlers, rusted iron, and vines. You wonder if it might be of some use in the jungles of Elaudia?

The ancient shopkeeper finally stops bustling to and fro, setting down the pendant carefully on the counter in front of him and hefting the mace onto his shoulder. Perhaps it's merely your imagination, but you could have sworn that the dragon head's eyes shot you a glare. “Oh Valued Customers, shall I explain to you what I've chosen?” He ask, glancing between Pratima and Mortia.

He launches into his explanation before they ever have the chance to speak. He starts off with the glass armor. “The design makes it very light, and flexible. I trust you will have no complaints maneuvering the jungles. It also protects quite well from the elemental magics, all save Earth. It seems that to Earth alone it is weak. More than that, the lenses-” He taps the two thin panes of glass covering the eyes. “-are constantly inundated with ambient vys, used to fuel a spell which reveals to the wearer all manner of spirits, hazards, and secrets.”

He holds up one ancient, decrepit finger. “The issues arise when one takes into account that the Sight cannot be turned off. So long as one wears the armor they will be privy to the thoughts and feelings of everything around them, from the most insignificant of insects to the most powerful of ancient spirits. It is enough to drive even the strongest mad if they overindulged.”

“Now for you, young miss.” He turns to your sister, picking up the mace and the pendant both. “If you wish for a weapon, there is none better than this mace.” You feel him channel vys, and the entire thing burst into flames except for the handle. The dragon's mouth opens, a jet of flame spewing forth even as the metal begins to glow white hot. He swings the mace forward carefully, towards the edge of the counter. The dragon's head seems to leap forward, extending nearly a foot forward to latch onto the edge of the table. With a violent wrenching motion a massive chunk of wood is torn away, only for it to get turned to ash moments later when fire spews out of the head of the mace.

For some reason, you're reminded of Profectus' arm. It has the same sort of molten core and the same intense heat generated by the presence of vys. You have no doubt it would prove a formidable weapon. Still, you wonder if the mace, like Profectus' arm, has a spirit trapped inside it. You're not sure if you want your sister to have dealings with spirits, especially considering how new she is as an adventurer.

Next he picks up the small shield pendant, holding it up so she can get a good look at it. It has one large gem in the center, and a few smaller bound to the strap. “This is a fairly simple device, the Rhynians produced hundreds of thousands of them, in massive facilities deep beneath the Earth, using strange machines which functioned independently of any input or direction. They were favored by nobles who wanted some measure of protection in public but feared that wearing actual armor was too directly a sign of their paranoia.”
(1/2)
>>
>>41575815
nice, that actually got me to laugh
>>
He sets the pendant on the counter, not bothering to put on an actual demonstration. “All it really does is project a small field of vys around the wearer, almost imperceptible save to a trained Vatis. It extends around the torso, protecting one's vitals but leaving the extremities largely unarmored. Good for stopping a blade or an arrow, but far from the end all be all of defense.” After a slight pause he adds. “It's very cheap.”

Your sister has eyes only for the mace, but she at least turns to you before blurting anything out. If she was too overt with her desire it might hurt your bargaining position, after all. “I think both would help me immensely but that mace is going to be expensive.” She says to you, keeping her voice low.

However, before you can respond the old shopkeeper speaks again. “Perhaps, before you make your decision, you'd like to know a little more about the items you've picked out as well? I see you've selected the Phoenix Belt, a powerful artifact. It has a habit of showing up around here every few decades.”

You step forward, setting the belt and the book down on the table. “Well, I suppose it couldn't hurt. I assume the belt has something to do with fire?”

The old shopkeeper shakes his head, his voice taking on a certain tone of finality. “Far from it. It rips from the wearer half of their soul, storing it within the gem at the center. It will be immensely draining, but your soul will regrow and the benefits the belt bestows upon the wearer are well worth it. No matter how badly you're wounded, whether you're reduced to dust or your heart ripped out or your head severed, the belt will revive you. It will grow for you an entirely new body if need be. However, it will only work once. The belt is consumed in the process, burned to ash.”

Guys. We've only got 911 gold. This stuff totals to over 1000. We could probably afford it with our jewhaggles, but we'd be broke afterward. We should definitely keep money in reserve, for unforeseen circumstances/merchants.

Because you KNOW that if we spend all our money here, Soma is going to conveniently have Sadik (The mysterious travelling merchant with the cart full of powerful artifacts who sold us a whole bunch of great stuff) show up once we leave town and offer some ultrapowerful artifact that we can't afford.
>>
>>41576564

>>
>>41576521
We should start making copies of our soul and throwing them into golems.
>>
>>41576564
we are about to go on an ADVENTUUUUURE

we are gonna come back RICH AS FUUUUH

lets spend it all now, the solution is to ask our companions to foot some of the bill for supplies or to reimburse us on travel expenses
>>
>>41576564
>for unforeseen circumstances/merchants.
We're leaving the known world. Plus we'll be with our companions and cloak which has all of their gold in it so we can just ask.

And Sadik won't show up till we finished his task.
>>
>>41576564
this is to haggle, we could always back away at the end.
>>
>>41576596
>And Sadik won't show up till we finished his task.

Straight from your ass to the internet.
>>
>>41576564

Normally you'd be right but if we can't extract any of our soul to make it work then it's pointless.
>>
>3x Technician's Armor

Should take a hefty chuck off of the bill.
>>
>>41576648
I seriously doubt the tattoos will do that.
>>
>>41576677
If they contain our soul we wouldn't be able to get discipled let alone remove a chunk of our soul.
>>
>>41576717
we don't know that it does that.
>>
>>41576648
If that's the case then we just give it to Darzi or whoever else we care most about, maybe we could figure a way for Zahak to wear it

It's really impressive magic and no matter what I think its worth buying to study

I'm also of the opinion that "Life" and "Soul" are two distinct things
>>
>>41576637
>We should start making copies of our soul and throwing them into golems.
>les do it, I'm not sure why we haven't started that yet

Because if we do that then we've got a whole bunch of robots running around with our Jew soul, and being Jewbots, they'll be able to invest and control the market so efficiently that we'll be pushed out of investment opportunities.
>>
>>41576717
We could always cut off our arms, use belt/get discipled, then regrow our arms with fancy water powah
>>
>>41576734
Of course, that was quite an oversight on my part, I appreciate you catching this eventuality
>>
>>41576730
>I'm also of the opinion that "Life" and "Soul" are two distinct things
It's unlikely that they aren't. Remember that Protect was actually Contain.
>>41576758
That would remove the tattoos entirely.
>>
You glance past the shopkeeper to the curtain dividing the front of the shop from the storage room. “What about that crown I saw? The one with the antlers and vines. We are going into the Elaudian Jungle. Any sort of Nature Magic would be a welcome addition.”

The shopkeeper doesn't say a word as he slips behind the curtain and emerges with the crown clutched in his withered, almost skeletal hands. The centerpiece of the crown is a iron protrusion in an odd style, you'd guess that the entire thing is some sort of Elven creation. It might be from a time before Rhynia, just looking at it. All of it is ancient beyond belief. Even the iron looks like something someone dug out of a bog rather than pried from the Earth.

He sets it down almost reverently on the counter. “This is the crown of the first King of the Elves, an immensely powerful artifact. It is crude, the work of unskilled hands, but enchanted with runes long ago forgotten. It was worn by the man who overthrew the dragons and worn by his heir who drove them underground.” The shopkeeper takes on a half joking tone. “For it to be worn by the man who woke them from their long slumber and drove them to the surface would be fittingly ironic.”

You're more than a little shocked, how in the name of the Gods could he have known about that? You hadn't told him of your adventures. Did he hear about you and figure it out on his own?

Unfortunately he continues before you're able to voice your questions. “As for what it does, well... to say I don't know would be misleading. I have never see the crown worn nor worn it myself but I did find a tale in an old book of children's stories related to the first King of the Elves.” He breathes out a rattling sigh. “It was said that he could will forest to spring from the ground and that flowers bloomed wherever he walked, that he lived for ten thousand years and that he fathered ten thousand sons. Almost every elven tribe trace their lineage back to him in some way, so I'm inclined to believe the tale. However, I can't say with any degree of certainty whether the rest of the tale is true.”

Actually... if that works, we could mass produce enchantments easily by tatooing them onto someone's skin, cutting the enchanted skin off, then regrowing it.

I reeaaalllllly don't want to give up any of our guns... Right now, we're the only people in this dimension with automatic firearms, and one of the few people with any firearms at all. They're incredibly powerful weapons, and offer a non-magical way to fight enemies that are immune/resistant to/absorb vys. (SUCH AS THE VOID CREATUES).

Seriously, these kinetic weapons would absolutely annihilate void creatures, since they're only vulnerable to physical attacks, and guns are about the most powerful physical weapons in the setting.

Not necessarily, If we've really got no idea how to go about it, we could do a direct copy of the engravings on the Rhynian pistol and see if it works/make our own modifications
>>

Can we sell the compact sword?

No, nigga. That shits cool. First thing we ever bought and haggled for (plus the Rhynian Armor).

Soma, I have a question. You said that the party's money together could rival the Shah's. However, this guy in his tiny shop seems to have a huge supply of artifacts, all of which are immensely valuable. I'd guess that the party could buy out the entire if we wanted to, but it'd take the majority of our funds. So why the hell does this random guy in a basement have so much wealth, equal to a significant portion of the Shah's money?
>>
>>41577600
Soma fucked up the wealth system
>>
>>41577600
Magic or something.
>>
>>41577600

>>

>>
>>41577600
Its doesn't really matter anyway
>>
>>41577600
I think Soma was referring to the liquid assets of the Shahdom. The Shah himself has a ton of artifacts that could be worth tons of money. I don't think Soma was including that. (I could be wrong.)
>>
>>41577600
He doesn't have actual wealth. He has material wealth. He's probably not even mortal, considering the shit that shows up in his shop.
>>
>>41577600
shhh don't question it
>>
>>41577645

>>
How many times have we haggled for shit we don't need/never end up using? I say we at least give the belt to another member of our party, seeing as we already have those tattoos that will probably do something when we die.
>>
>>41577600
Its because this nigga is the thousand year emperor.
Hell soma made it pretty obvious with how he changed the guys look and the way he speaks from the last time we visited him.
If you don't believe me look up the last time we talked to him.
Hell he calls a rare book a good read, like he was there.
>>
>>41577759
Shopping is too boring for me to read that carefully
>>
>>41577759
kek maybe it's just because he likes the book, faglord
>>
>>41577600
Several reasons anon.
1.) He's old as everliving fuck
2.) He was a very successful adventurer in his youth who saved his money, and saved most of his artifacts.
3.) As another Anon mentioned, I did not include the Shah's artifacts amongst his wealth, I only took into account his cash money. With his artifacts and material wealth, the Shah far outstrips you, your entire party combined, your entire family combined, every noble family combined, and indeed, every person in the whole of Pidjata combined. Including the Samrat of Kulkarni. That's largely because of the Shah's Vault beneath the palace, which houses thousands of powerful artifacts which are reserved for the crown's personal use.
>>
>>41577726
No shit. Hoarders is a real thing. And when you can't die there's no reason to sell shit.

Hell you could get rich as fuck if you worked minimum wage for 1000 years.
>>
So, chances of the elven warlord coming after us when he learns we have such an important artifact of his people? Also I would laugh and laugh if it only worked for elves.
>>
>>41577791
But we're an elf.
>>
>>41577778
>vault
We should break into it and steal everything.
>>
>>41577600
To follow up with this, there's some serious price creep happening in this quest.

In thread #2, we got our Rhynian Centurion's Armor for 400 silver. 400 silver, or 26.66 gold, for ancient enchanted armor from the elite of one of the most powerful empires to exist.

Later, when we got to Anthus, there were a few items in the Academy's collection that cost a couple hundred gold. The reasoning given for these prices was that they weren't meant to be sold, and a ridiculously high price tag was slapped on by the faculty to deter would-be buyers.

Now, the simplest things cost hundreds of gold.
We managed to spend several THOUSAND gold in under two weeks.

WTF Soma.

Books have always been pretty expensive. This one is actually pretty damn cheap. From thread 6:

“The Beginner's Guides are three hundred silver, each. The Burst scroll is four hundred fifty. The Leaping scroll is six hundred seventy five. The Grandmaster's Journal is one thousand two hundred.”

You quickly convert that into gold prices. Twenty each for the Beginner's Guides. Thirty for the burst scroll. Forty-five for the Leaping scroll. Eighty for the Grandmaster's Journal.

That's exactly my point. The Rhynian centurion armour was over a thousand years old, in perfect condtion, and only issued to Centurions, so only a few hundred( or a few thousand?) were ever produced (It's rare!). It carried us through most of the quest so far, it has a flamethrower, it self repairs, it lets us swim underwater, it lets us interface with Rhynian tech, it blocks Radiation, it's a gas mask, it gives the Sight (It's useful!).

We got it for 26 gold. From a purveyor of artefacts, who is a retired adventurer, and very powerful in their own right. (Jut like the guy who just sold us a bunch of stuff for 1000 gold)

Well the centurion armor isn't that rare of an item compared to the crown of the Elf King(unique) or a belt that lets you cheat death(possibly unique/ very rare). Though 300 gold for that mace seems a little steep even if it is pretty cool.

You step forward and place your hands palm flat on the counter top. “So, let me be frank. I want everything. I want all of it. However, I can't afford to spend more than twenty five thousand silver on artifacts alone, I simply don't have the funds.”

The masked shopkeeper leans forward. “Then the case may be that you can't afford everything. You may have to take only a few things. That is indeed the very definition of managing one's finances.” His breath is absolutely rancid, it smells like rot and mold.

Okay, perhaps that was a weak opening tactic. In fact, that was just downright a bad idea. Your stepmother would talk your ear off for making a rookie mistake like that. Pani's glorious tits, what were you thinking? You channel vys to improve your mental faculties, the cobwebs falling away as the gears start turning in your head. Time almost seems to slow down as you hold up your hands in mock surrender, though you realize it's just your own perception of events seeming to slow. It allows you more time to think. “We both know that I'm one of your few reliable clients who can generally afford your wares, my point is that if not even I can afford your prices don't you think that your prices are too high? I bought a suit of Centurion armor for less than thirty gold, and I know for a fact you get most of your stock for free and have your living expenses taken care of by the state. Don't pretend you need the money.”

The old shopkeeper shrugs his shoulders. “It is true that I have no need for the money, but what would be the point of running a shop if I didn't try to make obscene amounts of money? I have no competition, not truly. If one wishes to purchase high quality artifacts mine is the only store in El-Amin to do so. Mine is the only store in all of Pidjata to do so, that I know of at least. Sure you can find trinkets scattered throughout the markets, but they're worthless.”
