You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

The past week had been a rather grueling training ordeal, practicing how to joust with Vertical Tanks. You had to fight every instinct drilled into you in basic training by trying to keep distance from your enemy. While getting in close for a good shot was always encouraged, straight up physically ramming them was not. However, some of you were better able to cope with the conditions than others. You knew for a fact that yours and Rock's crews quickly got the hang of it. Bannon was more or less being carried by Parker's top notch driving. However, Alfie still remained the weak link, her conservative driving style making her incapable of adapting to the aggression Breton maneuvering required.

Not only that, but you had the special diplomatic ball to worry about tonight, where pretty much anybody with a name in Breton, including foreign "dignitaries" like you, were expected to attend.

"Very good, very good!" Willem claps appreciatively as you push your lance through your target, an iron ring hanging from a wooden post. "You'll definitely be able to beat most of our squires now!"

"What about the knights?" Tarin asks, popping her head out of the hatch.

"Well.... that's a different matter." Willem says diplomatically before brightening up. "Ah, but other than that, we've finally made the necessary refits to your personal steeds! They will now be able to mount lances like any Breton steed!"

"That's great!" Why grin as you climb out of the hatch of your training VT and drop to the ground. "It'll feel really great to get back into some familiar surroundings for a change!"

"I daresay, it is a fine looking steed, even if it is a bit... plain." Willem says as he looks up at your Wolverine. It was still in the standard issue olive drab, though still marred by burn marks and scratches considering you didn't have the time to fix up all the cosmetic damage yet. "She seems to have been blooded in the fires of combat, as well!"

"That's right." Tarin nods. "Took out quite a bunch of enemy VTs with it."

"So, what's her name?" Willem asks.

"Who? Tarin?" You respond with confusion.

"No, no! Your steed! Your steed must have a name, right?" Willem tilts his head curiously.

"Um, well..."

"We never actually got around to it." Tarin finishes for you.

"Well, that can't do! How would you expect to ever gain the respect of other knights if you don't even name your steed?" Willem shakes his head. "Surely you must have some idea!"

"Well..."

>Haha, now it's that inevitable time, to COME UP WITH A NAME FOR YOUR VERTICAL TANK!

"Hmmmmm, she kinda strikes me as a Clementine, don't you think?" You say, turning to Tarin.

"Whatever you say." Tarin shrugs.

"Ha! A fine name!" Willem laughs. "I look forward to seeing Clementine in battle!"

"It'll probably come sooner than you think." You sigh. "The tournament will be after the ball?"

"A few days, yes." Willem nods. "So we will still have time to prepare."

"I see." You nod.

"Well, training is done for now." Willem says. "You will have the rest of the day off, but I suggest you prepare for the ball soon. If you need anything just find me or the Chamberlain."

"Thanks, Willem." You nod.

With that, Willem trots off back to the main castle. He gives your assembled VT's one last look as he passes.

"So, what do we do now?" Tarin asks.

Well, if remember, Bannon and Parker were probably just finishing debriefing Sawyer via phone. You may be able to meet them to catch up on what was going on back home. After all, Breton wasn't too concerned with the affiars of its neighbors so outside news was a bit hard to come by. Alex and Rock were off patrolling the borders of the Artois estate. You were still in a state of war with Reikland, after all, so it couldn't hurt to be cautious. Finally, Axel and Alfie were still trying to get the hang of jousting down in the practice field.

Then again, maybe you should prepare for the ball.

"Maybe we should pay Axel and Alfie a visit." You say. "I'm actually kinda worried about them."

"They do seem to be lagging behind." Tarin nods. "I get the feeling Alfie isn't cut out for this kind of combat."

"Yeah, she's the kind to hunker down in one spot." You say in agreement. "Come on."

As you come up to the training grounds, you can see a lone VT trotting down the field at full sprint towards the same target you and Tarin had been practicing on, a suspended metal ring. However, as you see the VT about to make contact, the legs tense up and the VT rapidly loses speed, throwing off its aim and causing the lance to swing too far to the left.

"Yeesh, they still can't get it in." You frown.

"It does take a certain touch." Tarin sighs.

By the time you get down to the field, you see Axel and Alfie have already disembarked from their training VT. Axel wipes some sweat off his forehead as he takes a swig of water while Alfie goes and sulks behind one of the VT's legs.

"Still not going well?" You ask.

"Unfortunately, no." Axel shakes his head sadly. "I don't want to say it's because of Alfie, but-"

"It's because it is me." Alfie sighs loudly. "I can't do it."

"I think you can. We just have to figure out something that suits your style." You say. "They just got our VTs prepped and ready for jousting. Maybe you'll do better in your own VT?"

"Maybe..." Alfie frowns. "But Brick is bigger an and heavier than these training VTs! What good is it going to do?"

"Brick?" Tarin blinks.

"Oh yeah, the Bretons were really big on naming their VTs so we decided to name ours, too!" Axel laughs as he past Alfie's drooped head. "The name was her idea, actually. Our VT practically moves like one, you know!"

"It's fitting." Tarin agrees.

"Hmmmm, you know..." You pause to think. Their VT, Brick's, armor was more heavier and more angled to ward off cannon shots. Maybe you could play that to your advantage somehow.

>All that extra weight actually gives you extra mass! Doesn't matter where you aim. If you can hit you probably have a good chance of knocking them over.

"You know," You put a hand to your chin in thought, "with all that extra angling on your armor, it would actually make it really heard to break a lance on you. Not to mention with all that extra weight it would be damn near impossible to knock you over. If you just play defensive you can slowly wear them down!"

"Hey, that doesn't sound half bad." Axel whistles. "What do ya think about it, Alfie?"

"I s-sounds like it might w-work." Alfie nods reluctantly.

"It's probably for the best that you move at reduced speed. That way it would help Axel better aim the lance." Tarin adds.

"Well, it wounds like we've got work to do!" Axel cracks his knuckles. "Alfie, how about we fire up Brick and do a few practice runs?"

"R-really? Okay!" The thought of being back in her familiar VT seems to brighten Alfie's mood.

Well, that seemed to solve that particular issue, at least for now.

"We should get going." Tarin says and turns to the siblings. "Don't forget to get ready for the ball."

"Yeah, yeah, we'll be ready." Axel waves you off.

He's not going to do it till the last second, is he?" You shake your head.

"Yeah, let's prepare for the ball." You say.

"Right." Tarin nods.

The two of you return to the main keep. At this point, you've become a rather familiar sight, so the castle staff mostly don't give you a second glance anymore. However, you do still receive curious stares from the knights who happened to also reside in the castle. Most likely trying to figure out whether you had the right stuff or not. However, you've mostly learned to ignore them at this point.

The Chamberlain (you've never heard anybody refer to him by name) is where he pretty much always is, standing at attention in the main hall, waiting for somebody to need something. He was also impeccably dressed in a very fancy butler-style uniform.

"Do the Man and Lady require assistance?" He asks, not even making eye contact with you, his face still pointed forwards towards the entrance.

"Yeah, um, me and Tarin here want to prepare for the ball tonight." You say. "So uh, what do we do-"

Almost immediately, the Chamberlain claps his hands together once, the singular clap ringing throughout the hall. Almost immediately, a small army of servants pour out of nowhere and grab both you and Tarin, pulling you away in separate directions.

The next few minutes are kind of a blur as you're brought into a bath, stripped, and vigorously cleaned from foot to toe, with a shave haircut, and even a manicure added in for good measure. As the servants dry you off, the Chamberlain walks in, with three different outfits.

"The Man shall choose his attire." The Chamberlain says, holding the three outfits up.

You take a closer look. One appeared to be an almost perfect copy of your regular dress uniform, in the standard Tilean olive drab, complete with replicas of rank insignia and medals you are pretty sure you never actually earned.

The second one appeared to be a much fancier military dress uniform, the type that used to be worn centuries ago. Big, shiny brass buttons, golden braids and the like. Much more bells and whistles than your more modern uniform.

The third seemed to be the standard tuxeduo, almost masterfully sewn and put together.

"All fitted exactly to the Man's size, of course." The Chamberlain says.

You eyes dart to each one. The simpler outfits like the tux and your regular dress uniform would be easier to move around in, and would give you a lower profile. The noble jacket, though, would DEFINITELY make you stand out, and you were sure as hell that would be the kind of outfit all the other Breton knights would be wearing.

I'd like to think that the Tilean default is to understate themselves and be the quiet professional instead of prancing around with the bells and whistles. Let other people overcompensate for themselves, but we don't need to.

"I'll choose the tuxedo." You say, pointing to the third outfit. It was a good balance between being fancy yet maintaining some semblance of subtlety.

"Very good." The Chamberlain nods. "The Man has made his choice."

The Chamberlain then hands off the extra two outfits to a pair of servants who take them away to an unknown fate, while another set of servants begin the process of assisting you in putting on the tuxedo, which was way more complicated than you would have thought.

"The Man will now choose the Lady's attire." The Chamberlian continues, clapping once to summon a trio of servants, each bringing in a different outfit.

The first, again, was a prettied up copy of Tarin's regular dress uniform, with the skirt. The second outfit was a royal dress. black with a large dress that reached all the way down to the ground and looked incredibly unwieldy to wear. Lots of lace as well as a very stylish corset were included as well. The third outfit was a simple black cocktail dress. Extremely form fitting and would show off quite a lot of shoulder and leg.

"You mean Tarin can't choose?" You ask the Chamberlain.

"Traditionally, it is the man that chooses the lady's attire." The Chamberlain huffs, as if this was something you should've known.

"Well, could I at least know what she preferred?" You sigh.

"The Lady showed an interest in this attire." The Chamberlain points to the dress uniform. "However, as per tradition, the ultimate choice lies with the Man."

Christ. You normally never worried about what Tarin would wear, considering she was mature enough to handle that sort of thing yourself.

"Please refrain from sweating excessively." The Chamberlain frowns. "You will ruin the fabric."

Jeez, what should Tarin wear?

You point to to the cocktail dress. Sure, it might not have exactly been what Tarin wanted, but it matched your tuxedo and you were honestly a bit curious as to what Tarin would look like in such an outfit.

"As the Man wishes." The Chamberlain bows and backs away, no doubt to get Tarin dressed.

Meanwhile, the servants finish fitting the tuxedo on you, and you're amazed at how you're able to move around rather freely, despite the tuxedo clinging to you like a second skin. You dared not begin to even think how much an outfit like this actually cost.

"The Lady has finished dressing." The Chamberlain announces.

Suddenly, a curtain is drawn back, and you turn to lock eyes with Tarin, dressed in that slim cocktail dress. The dressed ended midway down her thighs, leaving bare legs that ended in a pair of matching black high heels. You actually never quite realized how slim Tarin was, mostly since her figure was often masked by the baggy military uniforms she had worn almost all the time. But now everything was laid bare for you to see.

"So... how do you like it?" Tarin murmurs.

"Freaking amazing." You grin. "You should dress like this more often."

"You really think so?" Tarin examines the hem of her dress. "It doesn't seem to provide a lot of protection, and these shoes are almost impossible to walk around in, much less run."

"Has it never occurred to you that clothes can sometimes not serve any practical purpose besides looking good?" You chuckle.

"I never saw the point." Tarin shrugs, but then her eyes wander downwards to look at your tuxedo. "But I may have to revise that."

"Oh?" You grin as you nudge Tarin's shoulder. "You like what you see?"

"I think that you look the part." Tarin says, trying to sound neutral.

Heh, it was always fun to see her try to maintain her mask.

"Come on, don't be so shy!" You coo, nudging her should even more.

"Well..." Tarin looks away. "Yes. You do look handsome."

"See? That wasn't hard!" You laugh.

The two of you exit the dressing room and head back to the main hall, where you see Lord Artois and his entourage gathering in preparation to leave for the ball. Of course, everybody was all fancily dressed in all a manner of garb, ranging from royal attire to slightly more practical military uniforms down to others wearing low key formal wear like you.

"Hey! Kid! Over here!"

You look to the side to see your platoon, all dressed up as well. Parker and Bannon were in their regular dress uniforms, with Parker keeping her trademark beret and Bannon wearing an officer's cap to top it off. Rock was wearing a tuxedo like you, and frustratingly enough, so was Alex.

"Hey, Roy, looking good!" Axel laughs as he walks up, looking like as if he had just stepped out of a fairy tile picture book.

"Well they there Prince Charming." You grin.

"Hey! It's got style, and girls LOVE that sort of thing!" Axel laughs.

"Uh huh." You nod. "And Alfie?"

"Looks like a true princess!" Axel assures you but turns to look behind him. "If you can actually find her."

"Ah yeah, I figured Alfie wouldn't be too big on this."

"Oooooooh!"

You spin around to see Alfie in a big poofy princess dress, holding Tarin's hands as she examines Tarin's gown.

"So form fitting, a-and so much skin!" Alfie gasps, stars in her eyes. "I never took you to b-be so daring!"

"It matched with Roy's outfit." Tarin says simply.

Suddenly a bell rings throughout the hall.

"We will now proceed to leave for the ball! Will everybody assembled please exit the hall in an orderly fashion!" One of the servants announces.

"Better get going, then." You say to the rest of the platoon.

You all follow the procession out of the hall and into the front yard, where a large convoy of limousines is waiting to take everybody to the King's palace. You see everybody instinctively split off in to smaller groups to claim certain limousines. You assume that they've done this many times already. You then see a servant standing in front of one of the limousines waving frantically at you, signifying which limo was your ride.

"My apologies." The Chamberlain says, suddenly appearing at your side. "The Lord requests the Man's presence."

"What, me?" You blink. What could Lord Artois possibly want with you?

You take one look at Tairn, and back to the Chamberlain.

"Okay, take me to him, then." You say.

"Of course."

The Chamberlain leads you to the largest and fanciest of limousines, where Lord Artois is sitting inside. Alone. That struck you as odd, considering Artois was usually never far from his family.

"Ah, Powers. Richards. Please take a seat." Artois says.

The two of you quietly take the seat opposite of him while the Chamerlain closes the door. Artois then nods to the driver, who gets the vehicle moving.

"So what is this about, Lord Artois?" You ask curiously. "I don't think this is a simple social chat."

"It is not." Artois grunts. "There is something I must warn you about."

"A warning?" You raise an eyebrow. Tarin's body immediately tenses up as well at the words.

"It seems your exploits have not gone unnoticed." Artois leans forward, a grim look on his face. "There's been talk in the noble courts that you have been attempting to court Breton noble girls."

"What?!" Your eyes widen. "That's impossible!"

"I find that hard to believe as well." Tarin frowns. "Those sound like rumors, if not outright lies."

"That's what they are. Rumors and hearsay." Artois sighs. "But it seems there are... parties with 'vested interests' sowing the seeds of discord. I'm not sure who, but somebody is riling up the minor nobility into a frenzy."

"The Reiklanders?" You narrow your eyes.

"I would not put it past Colonel Gregor to cook up something like that." Artois nods. "But I wouldn't put it past Lord Sylvan mobilizing his flunkies."

"But for what purpose?" Tarin asks.

"Isn't it obvious? To knock you out of the running before the tournament." Artois frowns. "Out of your group, you have shown the most growth and promise. You are the obvious targets."

"So what, we have to look out for assassins?" You grimace. That was something you REALLY didn't want to have to add to your already large pile of worries.

"No, assassination is heavily frowned upon in Breton. Taboo, even." Artois shakes his head. "But honor duels are still legal, and any deaths that result from such duels are considered lawful killings."

"Why do you have to keep all the really inconvenient traditions?" Tarin asks.

"It's more efficient than your lawyers." Artois smiles wryly. "Of course, you can always choose to refuse, but then that would mark you as a coward and will lower your standing and image."

"So basically I'd HAVE to accept a duel that I'm challenged to." You conclude.

"Essentially, yes." Artois nods.

"What about the rest of my platoon?" You ask.

"It seems they're safe from scrutiny. It would look too suspicious otherwise." Artois responds. "Though if I were you, I would not tell tell them. I have the nagging suspicion that they're all the type that would take matters in their own hands if they found out there was a threat against you."

"That's actually quite true." Tarin confirms.

"You're right, we'll keep this between ourselves." You sigh. So uh, how do these 'honor duels' work, then?"

"Well, exactly how you think they do." Artois shrugs. "A noble will come challenge you. As the challenged, you have the right to accept or refuse. Of course, in most situations, you're discouraged from refusing. Then each duelist battles with a weapon of their choosing until one side yields or otherwise is no longer able to fight."

"So what stops us from say, just shooting them?" Tarin asks.

"Well, duels are just as much about winning public opinion as they are about personal gain." Artois explains. "If it appears you won a duel through dishonorable means, it's often worse than actually losing the duel, since at least you could say that you fought your hardest."

"So, we can't refuse, and we can't cheat." Tarin rolls her eyes. "This is going to be wonderful."

"Wait a minute, you make it sound like you'll be doing the fighting." You turn to Tarin.

"Well, yeah. Somebody needs to watch your back." Tarin says. "I'm a better hand to hand fighter than you, remember?"

"You just have faster reflexes." You say defensively. "But I'm tougher and have more strength. You mostly rely on surprise in your fights."

"Oh my, this is an interesting turn of events." Artois chuckles. "It's been too long since we've had a lady duelist."

"You're not helping." You grumble.

"I'll duel in your stead, Roy. Don't worry." Tarin assures you.

If its sneaking around and such sure but leave it for the tank.

You know, as the challenged, we should have the right to add conditions to the duel.

Two-on-two?
>>
>>41619384
>No way are you putting Tarin in danger.

If Roy is challenged, Roy needs to duel. "Hiding behind a lady", no matter how much of a knife-happy yandere she may be, will be dishonorable.

Now, if the challenge is to both of us, sure. Let Tarin off the chain. Let's see her in action!

"And what do you think it would look like to everybody if I let a girl, no matter how skilled and sexy, do the fighting for me?" You fire back.

"...point." Tarin concedes, then blinks. "Wait, what was that last thing you said?"

"What? That you were skilled?"

"No, the other thing."

"That you're a girl?"

"Ugh, nevermind."

Artois' loud chuckle reminds the both of you that he's still there and listening to everything the both of you are saying.

"I see my fears were misplaced." Lord Artois winks. "You two seem to be the type of pair that can withstand anything."

"We're here." The driver announces.

"Ah, right on time!" Lord Artois nods as he gets up from his seat. "Get ready, you two. Here comes the hardest part."

Lord Artois then opens the door and you're immediately bombarded with light and noise, as flashing lights and loud music blare from the main hall of the King's castle. All around, you can see similarly parked limos and even the occasional Vertical Tank disgorging their passengers. Nobles and knights from all over Breton were gathering.

"Looks like a big party." You muse.

"Indeed." Tarin nods.

"Shall we?" You hold your hand out.

"Of course." Tarin smiles as she takes your hand.

However, that smile quickly disappears when another girl wraps herself around your other arm.

"Roy Powers, I was hoping that you would come!" Von Hess says with giddy anticipation.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! Don't forget Ace Combat on Friday!

Welp...Hopefully, we can survive long enough until Rock and Alex arrive at the party and give us some solid advice in these situations considering their backgrounds.

Cocktail.

TBH, i like Tarin more but VOn Hess makes a interesting side-dish.

Especially if Reiklan is the type of place that does the whole "You have bested us, take her and make many strong VT drivers."
>>
>>41619861
Oh.

This does raise a good point. We should add a little swagger to our step, we do have two beautiful women on our arms, one of which is the representative to the enemy nation.
>>
>>41619850
Well, if the situation ever goes pear-shaped, we can always rely on Rock to do something rather crazy, or Alex to distract Noblemen/women.
>>

>>

I certainly wouldnt mind but she must past the Roy Powder's test.
>>
Guys guys.

If we just arrived with our own girl Tarin, AND Reikland's Von Hess....

That blows the rumors of courting minor Breton nobles clean outta the water.
>>
>>41619944

or adds fuel to them. Afterall, we're clearly comfortable courting more than one girl, even if we're only kinda-sorta courting Tarin and not (As near as I can tell) really courting Von Hess*

*Due solely to a lack of time to do so.
>>
>>41619944
I wonder if Von Hess knows about the rumors?
>>
>>41619960
We can do both.

If it's true Merc has said tarin is lewd so....
>>
>>41619960
Ghost you magnificent bastard. This is SUPPOSED to be the one MercQuest that Tarin wins the MCBowl.

>>41619962
Dunno, but if she did, would it matter? She seems like a spontaneous, young rebel kid. She doesn't seem to have been smacked with the stick of authority and war yet.
>>
>>41619850
This is exactly why I posted >>41619259 .

>"Rock! How do I seduce the enemy envoy before her stooge-monster tries to murder me in a duel?"

>"Ah, that's where you've got it mixed up, Roy. You seduce her by winning the duel, by making it a Vertical Tank Duel! And then you mount that spoil of war right next to your pintle mount. She's small, she won't take up much room."
>>
>>41619960
>>41619991
She will of course.

Von Hess get's the silver and become mistress.
>>
>>41619991
>This is SUPPOSED to be the one MercQuest that Tarin wins the MCBowl.

Yes but both merc and anon aren't making that easy.
>>
>>41619991

She may still. I just prefer free will over predetermination.

Plus I think Von Hess is the better girl. Emotionless types don't do anything for me.
>>
>>41619934
Anon, it's not like Alex is going to bring a male and female attire to this event. It's probably Unisex (if at all possible)
>>
>>41620044
Tarim is reserved not emotionless.
>>
>>41620044

Fujiwara plz go

You'd jump on an emotionless type in a second if she was delicious brown, Ghost.

have to agree, I think you will.

Also This Tarin is a bit more Dere then Kuu though.

Rarely more applicable than on an anon-controlled quest thread, eh?
>>
>>41620103

Depends on the other options.
>>
>>41620190
But Ghost she's not exactly an emotionless type in this story though.
>>
>>41620217

She's close enough that I feel like exploring Von Hess' character would result in a more rewarding relationship in the long run.

But tarin has that first girl thing going and I hear that's a big deal, soooo.
>>
>>41620264
Maybe character development maybe but then again Tarin doesn't get much of that either so it might be even for me.

It kind of is, unless Roy try and pull off what Frank did in SW89.
>>
dammit missed the threa-
oh boy.
oh boy oh boy thsi just got awkward
>>
>>41620264
We still need to figure out if Roy Powers can convert her to the side of Truth, Justice, and the Tilean Way.

>"Hey! Join us! We promise not to scoop out your brain, use it to drive a VT, and put what remains of your body to use as meatgrinder infantry!"

>"Hahaha, you fool, I'm the one who masterminded that program!"

>"Hmmm... welp. So, Tarin, 'bout dem legs..."
>>
>>41620304

So she's science minded!

It's all good in the hood. We just get her to fall madly in love with us, return her affections, and when she builds a doomsday army and conquers the Reich- er, reik- we live a life of comfort.

or something, IDK.

are you still butthurt about that?
