”Okay, try to let off on the clutch a little bit...”Your foot draws back, and the car jumps, rattling you around on your seat. Your mother sighs as the engine dies, without a source of food to keep going. “A bit gentler, Mikoto. Try again.”You sigh, scuffing your foot against the car floor. “I just want to get in a real frame, Mom. And besides, aren’t all the really cool racers and their cars in automatic, now? Why do I need to learn manual?”Your Mom laughs. “Come on, Mikoto. You know it’s not the most high tech cars that win the race. After all, your father drove stick, and he was one of the best racers out there!”“But that doesn’t mean anything! Dad was really good at driving! He didn’t make the car jump around like a kangaroo, did he?”Mom shakes her head, smiling. “On the contrary. When I first met him, he tried to pick me up in a car with a Morosa. I swear, it felt like I was flying half the time, jumping as it was. No, Mikoto, your father was a worse driver than me. Always was.”“Wait, really?”Mom nods. “Really. Even at his prime, he was worse than me. But the point was, he kept trying. When he first saw me on the track, he did everything in his power to try to make me his,” she sighs, “and I guess it worked. God, it was really pathetic, some of the things he did...but really cute, too.”“Ugh. Gross.”She whacks you across the head. “Don’t be stupid, Mikoto. Either way, he tried his damn best, and he became good. Very good. Maybe not the best, but if he had had more time...I’m sure he would’ve passed me. And you, Mikoto, have an advantage. You’ve got my skill, sure. I’ve seen you drive around in that little automatic thing your friend Rench rigged up. But you’ve got your father’s drive too. You can’t neglect one, Mikoto. So come on. Gentler, this time.”You nod, and turn back to the wheel, pressing the clutch down as you turn the keys.(1/2)
>>41626213Ah, the sound of a Morosa starting up. It brings you back to the old days, when you were first learning how to drive manually. That feeling of keeping the entire car under your control, feeling the revs and balancing the fuel against the clutch, and how the engine would roar when you first ignited it...Driving a Morosa is like driving a car for the first time, every time.Hey, maybe you should contact Morosa. They’d absolutely love that line.“Alright, Mikoto! Turn it off!”You nod, and set the car back into neutral before turning it off. You slide out of the frame and walk on over to Rench, who’s bent over a table filled with gadgets and gizmos, many of them probably just there to make him look cooler.“So what’s it look like?” you ask.“It seems that your stunt flying the fucking thing at the Shift didn’t cripple it forever. You get to keep your car, Mikoto. Just, please, can you let me put in some proper safeties? I didn’t know you were going to let go like that.”You shrug. “Safety adds weight. If there’s safety, then there’s no way that I can let go like that.”“I think having a Death Wish isn’t a valid excuse to get rid of a proper roll-cage. I’ll put in an order,” Rench taps a few more buttons on his computer, before sighing and pushing away, rolling back in his chair. “And that’s that. Now we just need to wait for the delivery, and your car should be up and running again.”You grin, clapping your hand down on Rench’s shoulder. “Thanks, man. Couldn’t do it without you.”“You could, but you’d die trying.”“Isn’t that the same thing?”Rench shrugs. “Either way, I appreciate the complement. So please, take my advice on the whole safety thing.”
>>41626233“Ah, ah, ah. I don’t judge your engineering skills. Don’t judge my driving. You can’t think I’d let myself die so easily, would you?”Rench sighs. “Maybe, maybe not. Now please, can you leave? I’ve got to get to work. You’re not my only client, after all.”“Sure, sure,” you start walking, lifting a hand behind you to wave goodbye. “I’ll be back later, yeah?”“Got it. Now get out of my garage.” You step out of the shade of Rench’s workshop, and the large slats of the door come slamming down, locking you out.Looks like you’re going to have to find something else to do.>Go see Katherine! >>41626250Well, it is another race day today. You know the restaurant is going to be swamped, from some tourists coming to town to watch and just the usual customers who can’t go a day without that delicious chili, and your Mom will only make it harder for herself by continuing to insist on not hiring anyone else apart from you and herself (waste of money, she says).Welp, nothing to do but keep her from drowning in the flood. You head on over to your bike and hop on, cycling away from Rench’s workspace. With your car now in Rench’s care, you couldn’t find any other vehicle to carry you, and Mom was more than a bit adamant about you not going anywhere near her own car.Cycling along, you take some time to enjoy the breeze on your face, watching as the other citizens of the city walk from place to place. More than a few are just sitting in the street, watching the large hologram in the sky projecting the race going on. You navigate around all of them and keep going, soon enough arriving back at home.Your Mom’s already waiting for you, her head poking out from the crowd of customers all clamoring for delicious food.“MIKOTO! GET YOUR ASS HERE!” she roars.>Get to work!>Pull the crowd away from her, give her some time to breathe.>Do a three sixty and walk away.
>>41626931>Get to work!

>>41627173forgot to turn on auto......
>>41627188It's all good.
>>41626931You grin, and start pushing through the crowd, within about five minutes reaching the front of the so-called line (the line being more like an amorphous blob that absorbs anything within ten metres, but that’s the usual for the restaurant).Once you reach the front, you hop on over the front bar and slide down next to your Mom, grabbing an apron from the side (with Kiss the Driver written on the front), and turn, facing the crowd. You take a breath, and shout “RIGHT YOU FUCKS, IF YOU WANT CHILI THEN GET IN AN ACTUAL PROPER LINE. ADVANCE, GIVE US MONEY, AND WE’LL GIVE YOU FOOD!”That’s the signal for organization, and they begin to assemble themselves, with those who want chili actually forming a one dimensional shape, the leader holding out his money in gleeful anticipation. You swipe it from his hands, and grab a plastic bowl, dumping in gratuitous amounts of chili from the gigantic vat where it simmers, and hand it off to him. “NEXT!”The line moves reasonably quickly, with you handling all of the simple orders and Mom taking on anyone who doesn’t want ‘the usual’. From time to time some tourists come in and ask for utterly ridiculous things, like “do you have salad?” or “is this gluten free?”. They’re laughed out the door by absolutely everyone in the restaurant. You take a few minutes to wipe the beads of sweat from your forehead (gotta collect them to add flavor to the chili), and turn to your Mom. “When did the rush start?”She shrugs, pointing up at the screen in the corner of the room. “Race just started about thirty minutes ago. This place has the best screen and food in a mile radius (made with actual meat!) so they come here-”“I live here, you know. I know this.”She shrugs. “Some people might be interested in an infodump. Anyway, why are you here? I thought you’d be at the race, disobeying me.”(1/2)_
>>41627264Keep forgetting to post imagesYou clutch your chest. “You wound me. How could I possibly go against your wishes, my dear mother? You’re the one I care of most, and I couldn’t bare to ruin your life by ending mine before it’s time.”She grunts. “Pull the other leg, it’s got bells on.”You continue serving more and more customers, the store being forced to detach the safety panels at the front of the shop and expand out into the street. These days, the line can go around the block. You’re never sure why your mother wanted to stay in this old building apart from buying something nice with the cash, but she just grinned and said nothing when you last asked.Either way, the race is halfway through, and a lot of people are just watching the screen as opposed to getting food, so you’ve got some time for a little break now.>Go see if anybody you know is out there in the crowd.>Go to the race; you’ve done enough work for the day.>Call up somebody (Rench, Digs, Katherine, whoever).

She turns away from him, raising her eyebrows in a question. You signal out into the crowd. “I’m just gonna take a break for a bit, while it’s slow.”She nods, and you pull off your apron and hop over the front counter again, moving forward into the throng of people, many just sitting on the floor in front of the counter, watching the race. You manage to make your way out of the building itself and get outside, where even more of a crowd is trying to peek in and get a good view of the screen. Even a few amateur racers have stopped by, and are just sitting on top of their frame, sipping from bowls of Chili as they watch the race.Further on, you spot a few more groups of people who don’t seem to be doing anything, including some engineers. You actually recognize one of them, a lankier fellow who’s metal arm gleams in the sun as he sips from his own bowl.>Yo, Nahar! How ya doing?>Eh, don’t bother him. Keep walking.>Write In.

How ya doing?”He coughs slightly at the interruption, wiping some chili from his face, before turning to you. “Oh. It’s Rench’s driver, Mikoto. Nice to see you again. How’s Rench doing?”You sigh, shaking your head. “Sorry, but he was put into the psych ward of a hospital a little while back under Suicide Watch. Apparently having you tell him his work was good kinda left him nothing else to work for in life.”Nahar chuckles, as does a few of the other engineers. “Funny. What’s he doing now?”“Working on my car again, like a champ. He was very happy that my stunt hadn’t wrecked the car.”One of the other engineers snorts. “Stunt? That’s nothing. My driver took a pristine hover-frame that I built for him, and drove it off a fucking cliff, thinking that hover somehow means “doesn’t fall”. Had to fix every last part.”Another engineer, who seems to be more metal than man, laughs. “You call that something? My driver took a brand new Mega engine that I had installed in his car, and put FOUR capsules in. FOUR. Why would you need four? And he barely makes Yellowline, let alone Redline! I got the pleasure of trying to fix a pile of dust and bolts when he came back with it.”You grin a little as the engineers swap stories back and forth of their constant misery (more than a few times a chant of Being Engineer is Suffering going up), and soon enough you’re included in the group, the different perspectives on everything making for some fun tales.“Of course there was a reason,” you point out.“What kinda fucking reason do you need to replace the matter annihilator fuel with something like plutonium? The thing already does its job! It doesn’t need more!”(1/2)>>41628261HEYO NO PROBLEM MAN THANKS FOR COMING
>>41628499Forgetting I have more to postYou shrug. “It’s pretty damn simple, as I see it. He had to achieve velocities previously unknown to man, in a very small amount of time. He had to displace himself several hundred kilometres in under ten seconds. He had to-”“-go fast, we got it,” Nahar chuckles, taking a sip from the bowl. “Mmhmm. Say what you want about racers, but they’re not hard to figure out. The real racers, at least. You guys are in it for the race, and nothing else. I’m sure you’re a fan of whatever manufacturer, but as long as its in your car, you couldn’t care less what it is, as long as you can win with it. Is that right?”You shrug. “Maybe. I mean, Morosa’s offered me a sponsoring opportunity, and I do really like their stuff.”“But if you were offered, say, a Mega, would you turn it down?”>Morosa’s taken care of me. I think I might as well return the favor.>Okay, you’re right, fair enough. The Mega’s a great engine.>Well, why not both? I’m sure I’ve got some extra room for another engine.

>>41628693You grin. “Well, I’d take the Mega. And then I’d see if Rench could find a way to fit it in with the Morosa engines, as well.”They all laugh, the raucous noise echoing through the streets. After they finish, they all sigh, simultaneously saying, “Ah, fucking racers.”Nahar turns to you, wiping away a tear of laughter. “Very funny, Mikoto. Now, is there anything we can do for you? Since I figure you’ve come along for a reason.”You shrug. “Honestly, I’m all good. I saw you guys outside and I thought I’d join you, since you were all having fun. Definitely better than hanging out with some of the other racers.”One of the engineers nods. “God, I know. Once, I had to spend four fucking hours talking to mine about how a fusion reactor will NOT just blow up nicely and give him a boost at the end line.”The other engineers shakes his head. “Oh, that’s nothing. I was shouting at mine for eight hours, since apparently his thick skull couldn’t realize that it’s a stupid fucking idea to try fit on two matter annihilators for a hoverbike.”“Only eight hours? Luxury! I spend twenty five hours every single day, trying to teach that little shit-”You relax in the background noise, enjoying the banter. >>41629145You don’t think about it. One of the many rules about racing (at least, for the people who are watching it), is that you don’t just stand around and question whether or not that car should actually be where you are right now. You just need to get the fuck out of the way, and complain at a later date. The plus side is that you’re still able to complain, as opposed to being some flat smear on the ground. So, you roll, jumping to the left with all your force and using your hands to propel you further, luckily managing to let your back hit a softer part of the road (being cardboard boxes people must have left out from the night before).Once you’re out of the way of the idiots who decided to race along a pedestrian road, you turn to face the offenders. And then feel a little bit worse. Because this is no race.A bank vehicle rushes past you, some idiot wearing a bandana over his face leaning out the side window, shooting backwards towards where a few other frames are driving behind him. Notably, some of the frames appear to be cop cars.As they rush past, you can see a few more vehicles driven by the comrades of whoever was driving the bank vehicle, trying to nudge the police vehicles into buildings or each other. One manages to knock a police car into an alley, and a burst of black flame signals a matter annihilator failure. This is really serious.>You need a frame. Now. Go find one.>No time to waste. Your front bumper, helpfully kitted out with gratuitous amounts of spikes and other pokey things, impales the back end of the other frame.Right where it was keeping all its fuel. You swerve out of the way as the frame gradually powers off, the hover mechanisms flickering before finally dropping the entire thing to the street, the body scraping against the ground. You keep your foot down to the bottom of the frame floor, feeling the engine struggle to put out the uncomfortably high amount of RPMs that you’re asking of it. The frame shivers as it pulls up and past another of the frames. The driver peeks his head out in curiosity, watching as you go ahead. His face quickly goes pale as he watches you jump out of the car, sailing through the air and over to one of the police cars, while the frame you leave behind starts to slow down pretty quickly, the slight turn of the wheel you gave it before you jumped sending it drifting to the right.Right into the path of the other frame. As you hit the roof of the police car, you can feel the wave of heat behind you as the matter annihilator of the frame spears itself onto the sharp edges of your own frame, providing a lovely firework behind you. With that, you reach around to the driver window of the police car, and knock politely. The window rolls down, and a very angry officer peeks out. “WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THI- oh, shit. Mikoto? You let the back end of the cruiser slide around and continue driving, chasing the bank car down the thin alleyway. You cringe as a few people try to press themselves against the walls of the close buildings, a few of them scratched up as you pass on by.You grimace, and continue to drive. The bank car takes another turn, this time into a proper street, and you continue to chase. You manage to pull up alongside him, and start ramming in at his side, trying to knock the car off balance. The driver of the bank car pulls out a pistol and tries to fire at you out the side window, but you drop back to behind him.And then you get an idea. All the police cruisers are angled, meant to be more aerodynamic. So...You drive ahead, pulling up past the bank car and flipping around to reverse along the street right in front of the bank truck. The driver leans out and tries to shoot, but you dodge.By dropping. As you cut the thrusters, the emergency wheels come out on the bottom of the cruiser, catching it before it hits the ground. You’re still moving a lot slower. And the bank car is accelerating. You lean back as you watch through the windshield the bank truck slamming up and onto the police cruiser. And with that, you slam the left thrusters to full power.Even as the police cruiser flips over, you watch the bank vehicle ramp off, the thruster-motion causing the entire thing to start rotating in the air. >>41633186You slide out of the car, shaking yourself slightly to get rid of some of the speed-pangs, and watch as several cop cars pull over around the thing and approach, guns raised and pointing directly at the car. The driver attempts to crawl out, but quickly drops back in when he sees what’s waiting for him.You grin, and turn away. You’ve done your job.And in the distance, you can see a motorcycle approaching. You go pale. The motorcycle pulls up, an insane thing made with a full Morosa engine, wheels more similar to those you’d put on backhoes, and the entire thing a jet black that absorbs your soul. You’re more scared of the person on it.She pulls off her helmet, and stares down at you with the rage of a thousand suns. “Mikoto.”“I...I mean, it wasn’t *technically* racing...”(1/2)Gonna be a bit slow with this
>>41633971mom is the fun police
>>41633971The rest of the day passes without too much nonsense. The race concludes in a reasonably spectacular fashion, with the first place driver riding his way to victory on top of his burning up frame (literally standing on top, arms spread wide, embracing the finish line). It’s a pretty impressive finish to the race, and signals the beginning of the next season. For you, though, it’s going to be more important than for anyone else.Because for this one, you’re actually going to be allowed to race.---Mom sighs as she gently places her face on the desk. “Mikoto, please...”You groan. “Come on, Mom! This is an opportunity! I won that last Shift because of my great stunt-”“-one that almost killed you-”“-But I still need to properly race in the Shift to win! I mean, this is what I’m working for! And I’m actually ready for it, too! There are only going to be two shifts this season, and I’ll have to win the first one if I want to win the World Cup as soon as possible-”She leans up, her eyes bleary from lack of coffee. “Mikoto. You realize that you’re not going to win everything your first time, right?”You shake your head. “I know I can do this, though. I’m determined to win this!”“But can you-”“How can I know without trying, Mom? This is what I’ve always wanted to do, and nothing’s going to stop me from doing it. What’s so wrong about getting in the practice, and making sure that I know the game before winning it for real?”Mom stares at you for a few seconds, before finally sighing. “You can race. I give you permission.”---So that’s how you got permission to race.In the Shift.God, you’re so fucking excited.(2/3)
>>41634201You’re currently sitting in Rench’s workshop, drinking a can of Sip while Rench works away on your frame. Occasionally he’ll mutter a curse as something explodes, but for the most part it’s going extremely well.He sighs as he stands away from the vehicle, wiping away from sweat from his forehead. “And that’s the most of it. We’ve still got some room on it, though, if you want to add on something else.”You nod, and head on over, admiring your frame. The entire thing is a piece of art, two Morosa-Twelves on a FWD system with Capsule Compatability, a Yellowline-class rollcage (the best you can get, because technically a Redline-class rollcage is actually a fallout shelter), and all of that is set head and shoulders above everything else with...The deliciously comfortable driver’s seat. The heated steering wheel. That slick, perfect white exterior, coated in an Everything-Repellent to keep the scratches off, with Mikoto written in a flowing script on the side. It’s not some base model thing. This is your car. Or, your and Rench’s car.“And I can add more to this?” you whisper.Rench nods. “Might take a few days to get the parts, but I can do it. We’ve got a week before the Shift, anyway, so might as well use the time.”You nod, and think...>No upgrades. Let’s tune this baby up with what it’s got.>Let me call Morosa about that sponsorship. I think we can get something better...>Let’s talk with Digs about securing (a car part of your choice)>Let’s ask Nahar to build us something (a car part of your choice)
>>41634232>Let's talk with Digs about securing (a car part of your choice)Ok, one thing I think our car might really need... Proper tires. We have a damn good engine, but I don't know if our current tires can handle it in the long run.Any thoughts?
>>41634232>Let me call Morosa about that sponsorship. I think we can get something better...
>>41634232>Let’s talk with Digs about securing a totally kickin' stereo
>>41634232>>Let’s ask Nahar to build us something (a car part of your choice)a better transmissionthat way we can get to higher speeds quicker.
>>41634232>No upgrades. Let’s tune this baby up with what it’s got.
>>41634232>No upgrades. Let’s tune this baby up with what it’s got.>Let me call Morosa about that sponsorship. I think we can get something better...Use both so that Morosa and us so we can make a super engine. >Let’s talk with Digs about securing (a car part of your choice)shocks, steering, tires and transmission
>>41634398I'll back this. Sounds like a solid plan.
>>41634232>Let me call Morosa about that sponsorship. I think we can get something better...But to clarify. Something better means like a part or an upgrade of some kind. Not a whole car right? Thatd be insulting as all fuck to Rench.
>>41634232>Let’s ask Nahar to build us a (oneshot) hover system. Maybe to use as a capsule replacement, but mostly a a giant airbag for the car.>"Knowing myself, this thing is going to end up flying again. I'd rather not wreck the frame so something to catch me as I go down would be great."
>>41634398sure why not
>>41634398I think the no upgrades option was exclusive
>>41634232Yo boss, I like where this dude's head is at ((>>41634450)) Willing to change my vote from >>41634378 to back it
Sorry I've been AFK. Writing for...We've got a few different options.>>41634440A part. Likely an engine. They said they were working an a multi-core matter annihilator.>>41634398You can use all those favors at once, but remember that you'll need them for later. Either one or none's pretty much it for now.So, here are the options:>>41634450This one's solid.>>41634351Also works>>41634327Nothing more important>>41634307Of course, Morosa sponsorship.Pick one that you like.
>>41634450Anyone have any problem with going with this one?
>>41634958Oh, we can only pick one? Well ok then, guess I'll go with...>No upgrades. Let's tune this baby up with what it's got.Keep the favours for now.
>>41634997You could pick more, but the point is that cashes them in. The longer you hold them, the more they're worth. You'll get more as you go, though, so don't worry about spending every now and then.
>>41634450>>41634958if we're going to fly we may as well try and stick the landing...Also this isn't part of the vote but when will weapons get involved? I mean right now I can see why people don't have them but the closer we get to red line the more likely it is we'll come across someone with something that goes boom.
>>41635029Good point. Your planet's World Cup is a bit stricter on weapons, but you'll definitely need them at some point.
Also we need to talk to diggs about getting us a table at the restaurant on the moon for our date with SpiderKat or what ever her name is
>>41635027real quick Artemis do you have a twitter i can follow or just a schedule so i dont miss these threads
>>41635052We could probably get some pea-shooters for the World Cup, right? Nothing too fancy.
>>41635093Oh shit! Forgot to post them this time round.Twitter: https://twitter.com/artemisQMArchive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=ArtemisQM
>>41634958In that case, then lets just tune up our car for now and save the rest.
>>41634958tune up the car if there more valuable later
>>41635172>>41635142Going for tune up, then. Please roll 1d100. You'll have that same performance you already have (which is great) so all the rolls are additive (apart from a 1, of course).Roll!

Still alive Artemis?
>>41636545OP will surely deliver.
Seriously, though, Art, are you alive?
>>41636545>>41636594>>41636914Oh.FUCK.I'm...That's annoying.My deepest apologies.Let's see where I left off
>>41636945What's annoying?Did you get in wrong with the mob?
>>41636980Will we have to rig races now to pay off the mob?!
>>41636980Annoying that I could possibly forget about you wonderful people. I don't come here to shitpost and go AFK, I come here to write good stuff for people to enjoy. And I messed up again.
>>41634232“Let’s tune it up for now, mate,” you say, taking another sip of your drink. “And I think I’ll leave that to you.”Rench grins and mock-salutes you. “All clear, captain. You’ll be more than ready for the race.”You smile, and turn away to let him take care of his work, flopping down in the little bed in the corner of the workshop, and going to sleep with the dreams of a better, faster car waiting for you when you wake up.---”LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WEEEEELCOME TO THE NATIONAL SHIFT COMPETITION!”The crowd roars, thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people all cheering and jeering with all their might, attempting to fill the race-track with their noise.Utterly impossible, of course. Today, the race track is going to be the infamous Canyons of Canar, several hundred miles of looping, twisting track that’s already been selected several times for Yellowline, and might possibly even be the Redline track one day, if the government could find a way to not suffer billions in property damage from the race.Either way, it’s been one of the greatest National Shifts yet, with dozens of contestants from all over the country, all selected from their respective Local Shifts, all preparing to win the race of their lifetime. For you, though, this is only the beginning. After all, you won it once already, right? And here you are again, your beautiful car at your side. This is going to happen, and you’re going to make it happen. This beast of a frame, with dual Morosa-Twelves, FWD, molecular breaks (not that you’ll need them), seatbelt (not that you’ll have time to put it on), and the capacity for three Capsules without getting blown the fuck up.Rench managed to make it a little tougher, too, strengthening the roll-cage a bit with some carbon nano-tubes he got. The side effect is the frame got even lighter, which made driving it feel like adding a jet engine to a golf cart.As in, glorious.(1/2)
>>41637160Rench laughs as he basks in the sound. “Ah, this is great! And if you go further, you’re going to experience even more of this!”You chuckle, putting in some ear-plugs to help you hear your thoughts. “Remember, Rench, that you’re the one who got me here.”Rench shakes his head. “I mean, sure, I did all of the actual, real, hard work, but you did the stuff that they-” he sweeps his hand across the audience, “care about. I’m nothing in comparison to that.”You nudge him. “I’m sure that you’ve got your own cadre of engineers who praise your every word.”Rench nods, his eyes going dreamy. “When Nahar complements you, anything is possible.”You check your watch, then the field again. “Right, so we got six hours until the race. What do we do until then?”Rench points out to the warehouses, sitting on the side of the track. “I was planning on actually finding Nahar and talking to him. Haven’t gotten an opportunity to do that yet.”>I think I’ll join you!>I hear Katherine’s at the event, so I’m going to find her.>I’m gonna find Digs. He’s the announcer again.>I’m going to walk down this dark alley right here.
>>41637231>I hear Katherine’s at the event, so I’m going to find her.
>>41637231>>I hear Katherine’s at the event, so I’m going to find her.
>>41637231>I hear Katherine’s at the event, so I’m going to find her.Say hi for me.
>>41637231>I hear Katherine's at the event, so I'm going to find her.Aren't we racing her today? Or is she not in this race?
>>41637231I’m going to walk down this dark alley right here. What could possibly go wrong? But, for realsies:>I hear Katherine’s at the event, so I’m going to find her.
>>41637350wasn't she in this race last time it was held then we fucked it up for every one.
>>41637445Puh-retty much. But since, you know, you were pretty fucking awesome, she forgave you.Writing for Katherine, then
>>41637231You wave goodbye to him. “Say hi to him for me. I think I’m going to go see Katherine.”He nods and walks off, and you pull out your phone, dialing in a number and lifting it to your ear. It rings a few times, and finally picks up. “Hello?”“Hi there Kat! It’s Mikoto here!”“Ah, Mickey, just the person I wanted to see.”“...Mi-ko-to.”“Call me Katherine, then.”You sigh. “All right then, Katherine. Where are ya? I wanted to see you before the races started.”“Hmm. So you can figure out what I’m doing and then fuck me over during the race?”“You wound me. First, you’re implying that I need to sabotage people to win.”“You kinda sabotaged the entire fucking Shift last time.”“Yeah, but that was really, really, really fucking cool. Literally nothing cooler.”“...Fair enough. Alright, I’m over by the start point.”“I’ll be right there.”---You’re soon down at the opening lines of the race, having taken a plane to get there. Your frame will be shipped over in a bit. For now, you must walk.Or skate on top of those pallet-carriers. That’s always fun.Soon, you find yourself where Katherine has set herself up, the telltale sign of spiders being a good clue. Specifically, the ridiculously tall spider standing on all of its legs, looking around the room.Katherine slides out of the thing, bringing it down with her back to the ground, letting the legs fold underneath themselves and turn into caterpillar tracks.“Hey, Katherine!”She turns to you and smiles, before having it quickly replaced with the usual sigh of frustration. “Please, Mikoto, get off the fucking trolley. It’s meant to help people, not to be your ride.”You hop off. “Sorry, just wanted a quick way to get over here. How’s progress?”(1/2)
>>41637823She indicates the general structure of the spider. “The Arachnus is coming along, but I’m not sure how its vertical climbing is yet. I mean, you’re technically allowed to just go straight to the point, but the top of the surface is mined, so I wanted to just race around the edges. I can’t test that, so I’m not sure.”You think. “Why not jump around? Try constantly hopping around. Or if you’ve got weapons mounted, shoot up the mines.”She nods. “Kinda what I was thinking. I’ll work on tha-”“Well look, it’s spider-girl.”Katherine freezes, and slowly turns around. “What the fuck do you want,” she hisses.“Ooh, she’s a snake now. Watch out, guys!” whoever the group is laughs. From the corner of your eye, they seem like the usual driver idiots who have their parents pay for their cars.>U fokkin’ wot m8 I’ll bash in ur fokkin’ head>...She’s a snake? That’s the worst you can do?>Ignore, whistle really fucking loudly.
>>41637850>U fokkin' wot m8 I'll bash in ur fokkin' head.I swer on me mam m8.

>>41638078those are hipsters fuck those guys
>>41637918Alright, I change my vote to this!
>>41637850“WOW.”They turn to you. “Excuse me-”“JUST WOW.”“Wha-”“WOOOOOW.”“Hey-”“That was so awful, so extremely pathetic. A snake? A fucking snake? Seriously? Jesus Christ, if your driving is anything like that insult, just end yourself now before you get behind the wheel. Just,” you laugh, leaning against a workshop bench, “wow. Truly.”The leader of the group seems to be a bit angry. “And who the fuck do you think you are?”You grin. “Mikoto. I won last year’s Shift.”Katherine coughs. “You mean, you ruined it for everyone else ever by winning the race in like under a minute and then flying off to wherever.”“Something like that.”One of the group backs away and leaves. “I’m out of this. You’re on your own, Lisa.”The leader of the group watches helplessly as literally every last person she had surrounded herself with leaves, walking off to wherever else. She finally turns around to face a grinning Katherine. “I’ve got a good one.”Lisa takes a step back. “No. Please, no...”Katherine’s grin is getting wider and wider. “So, the jerk store called...”Lisa’s eyes widen, not prepared for what’s coming. You aren’t either, and plug your ears in preparation.Katherine’s grin is at maximum schadenfreude. ”They’re running out of you.”You both watch as Lisa runs off crying, and you turn to Katherine. ‘That was harsh, Kat. Real harsh.”She shrugs. “You gotta do what you gotta do, Mickey. Thanks for that, by the way.”“You want to tell me who they are?”Katherine sighs. “I guess. I used to go to school with them, up in the High District. They dragged me into their group of ‘friends’ and pretty much used me for whatever menial task. When I tried to leave, they kept a hold, and tried to bully me back into it.”(1/2)
>>41638481“At some point my father lost his job, and we moved down to the surface. That’s when I realized that, you know, an insult means jack-shit. They tried to join racing to beat me at my own game, but so far...well, they win because of the tech they have. And they don’t always win, anyway.”You nod. “Fair enough.”>So, once you’re done with your preparation, want to go grab some food? My treat.>And I will be off as well. I think my frame’s arrived, and I need to prepare myself, too.
>>41638495>>So, once you’re done with your preparation, want to go grab some food? My treat.

>>41638809Ah, he Saw The Fast and his mind couldn't take it. Such a shame.
>>41638495“So, Katherine.”“What?”“We got some time before the race. Want to go find a place to eat? My treat.”Katherine thinks for a moment, tapping a wrench against the side of her frame, before setting it to the side and standing. “Sure. I don’t think there are too many other things to take care of. Where to?”You grin. “Oh, only the best for you.”---Not too long after, you’re standing on top of the commentator tower (Digs let you in), both of you holding a large bowl filled with some delicious fish soup. What really makes it is the entire view, though. In the distance, you can see a massive storm moving along, rain hammering down as it carves its way through the Canyons. What’s most interesting is seeing the dry parts right alongside it, a very definite line where the storm ends and the dry dusty whether begins.Either way, it’s a beautiful day.“Nice place,” Katherine comments, looking out. “Seriously, you’re in with absolutely everyone. How?”You shrug. “I talk with people, and they end up liking me. It’s my charming personality, right?”Katherine shrugs. “Maybe. Or that you need someone to hold your hand to figure out how to do things properly.”You laugh. “Well I’ll have you know I can use a hand break now! It’s all in the wrist, contrary to popular belief.”Katherine sighs, smiling. “Very funny. So, you think you’re ready for the race?”You nod. “I’m ready. And you?”“So ready. How you gonna feel when I beat you?”“Let’s not do these hypothetical situations. Especially when we know who the real winner is going to be.”Katherine nods, and offers out her hand. “Here’s to a good race.”You take it. “To a good race.”---And we’re done.Artemis is kill for next eight hours.Love you guys lots, see you around. I’ll be running through the week because I’ve got two weeks of freetime now, before I have to do anything! So fun is ahead!
