Didn't Kaya win first place, followed by kasai then lucy
>>
You sit in an alleyway, facing your teacher, Kasai, as your friend Bruce keeps watch for anyone approaching. You'd have a hard time explaining this to somebody, so it's probably better to avoid that altogether.

Your palms are facing skyward, mimicking your teacher, who allows small flickering flames to dance around her hands. Creating a tiny flame is pretty easy for you now, but what Kasai is about to teach you could prove difficult.

"Earlier, you surrounded your hands with flames," she reminds you. "That means you already have some ability to direct and command the fire beyond simply bringing it out of your hands."

The flames in her palms slowly grow in size, and lift a few inches higher above her hand, swelling and beginning to change shape.

"With the right focus and willpower, you can use your Spirit Energy to make the flames take different forms," Kasai tells you, as her flames slowly transform into spheres. "Creating orbs of fire is one of the simpler examples, and a good training exercise for you now."

She rises to her feet, and throws one of the fireballs into the air, catching it in her open palm as it descends back towards the ground. The two spheres shrink in size, and she closes her hands, extinguishing them.

"They can make for useful projectile attacks," she continues. "I'm sure you'll find them helpful in a fight somewhere down the line."

Taking Kasai's advice, you use your Spirit Energy to mold the flames, first feeding them and allowing them to grow in size, then shaping them into spheres much like she did. As she warned, it takes focus and willpower to create the orbs of flame, and ultimately the process takes you nearly five minutes, meaning that, until you've practiced, fireballs won't be a very practical attack in combat.

"Well done," she compliments, smiling in approval. "You are a quick learner, indeed."

"Dude...that's so cool," Bruce tells you from the end of the alley, staring at the fiery spheres floating above your palms.

"Now, take Spirit Energy away from the flames, let them shrink, then snuff them out," Kasai instructs you.

So should we try first making daggers or throwing knifes after we get the better hand of creating fire balls?
>>
>>41631565
You decide not to try juggling, at least not yet, and instead follow Kasai's instructions, taking energy away from the flames, and causing them to shrink in size until they're small enough to close your hands around. You snuff out the flames much faster than you created them, the entire process taking a matter of seconds rather than minutes.

"Very good," Kasai tells you. "Now, I want you to create and destroy spheres like those until you're able to do it in seconds. You won't have minutes to spare in a fight."

"Yeah, I don't think any demons are just gonna stand there and let you get your attack ready," Bruce agrees. "That would just be stupid."

Kasai glances over at Bruce before looking back to you. "He's right, you need to be able to strike fast. So, it's time for you to practice."

For the next hour you repeat the process of creating and destroying spheres of fire, the practice becoming more tiresome the longer you do it despite the fact that you reclaim most of the energy you spend each time you drain power from the flames. It's not without payoff, however, as you manage to shave about ten seconds off of the time it takes to create fireballs. It's clear that mastering this technique will take you some time.

"Maybe you should stop for today," Kasai suggests. "You have done well, and can continue tomorrow."

You're getting tired, so you decide to follow Kasai's suggestion and take a break. Seeing no more reason to watch for other people when you aren't doing anything, Bruce comes to stand at your side.

You look up at Kasai, and ask, "When can I absorb fire like you? Is that more advanced? And will it replenish my Spirit Energy?"

"I don't think human can absorb flames they haven't created themselves," Kasai tells you. "I am a fire apparition, so fire is a piece of what I am. I can draw strength from it, but humans are different."

"Bummer," Bruce says. "You could have been a great firefighter."

"The stronger you become with fire powers, the more resistant you will be to flames," Kasai tells you. "You might not be able to absorb them, but, become strong enough, and they won't harm you."

With your training done for now, you decide to follow through with what you suggested to Koe earlier, and call Spirit World.

Retrieving your Communication Mirror, you attempt to contact Kaya as you have in the past, but when the call is answered, and a face appears on the screen, it is not that of your former assistant, but rather, your former employer.

"Well, I was expecting this call sooner or later," Koenma tells you instead of providing a greeting. "You and I have a lot to talk about."

"Wait...that's the guy you used to work for?" Bruce asks in disbelief. "He looks like a toddler."

"Lord Koenma is much older than he looks," Kasai informs Bruce. "And far more powerful. Disrespecting him is not wise."

Bruce looks down at the mirror you are holding nervously, giving a nod. "I..uh...I didn't mean anything, just that he looks so young..."

"I get that a lot," Koenma replies shortly. "Now, as I was saying, we have a lot to talk about."

"That's exactly what I want to discuss with you," Koenma confirms. "Working for your old boss again?" Bruce asks. "Not sure how much the new guy is gonna like that."

"He'll probably approve," Kasai assures him. "Koenma is right to believe that assailing the compound will be difficult. Extra help should be a good thing."

"Continue your training when you can," Kasai instructs. "When it comes to life-or-death situations, you need every advantage you can get. I'll be back when you're ready for the next stage."

Kasai vanishes into the darkening sky, and Bruce helps you to his apartment. His parents are apparently out on a dinner date tonight, so asking permission for you to stay isn't really an issue. You and Bruce spend most of the evening talking and watching television, and you tell him a bit about your hunt for Mahou.

You sleep on Bruce's bedroom floor that night in a sleeping bag, and when you fall asleep, you find yourself standing in Koenma's office.

The "big" man himself is sitting calmly in his chair, looking between you and the other occupant of the room, whom you presume to be your replacement.

She looks to be about your age, maybe a little younger, with dirty-blonde hair and brown eyes. She looks at you with a distasteful expression, seeming to size you up as she looks you over.

"Thank you both for coming," Koenma tells you and the girl. "You know what we're here to discuss, but let's handle introductions first. This is my new Detective, Kara. Kara, this is-"

"I know who he is," Kara interrupts. "You and Kaya already told me about him. Can we get started?"

"Yes..." Koenma answers, his tone saying that he doesn't appreciate being interrupted. "Now, as you both know, you will be hunting down a man named Benjamin Disanto. He's well known by Spirit World, and has been involved in illegal activities for many years. With more pressing matters to deal with, we've let him go until now, but it seems he's becoming too dangerous now."

"So you want us to kill him?" Kara asks.

"No, I want you to capture him so we can bring him to Spirit World for interrogation," Koenma tells her. "But, he won't be easy to get to. His compound contains many traps, and he's apparently guarded by many tough demons."

"I haven't finished my training," Kara tells him. "If these demons are as strong as you say, I'm not ready to fight them yet."

"I know, neither of you are," Koenma responds. "We will make our move when your training is complete."

Koenma looks over at you. "It will be another six months before that happens. In the meantime, keep doing whatever it is you're doing. Your Spirit Energy is increasing, I can tell that much. Just don't cause any problems for Spirit World, and you can do what you want to get stronger."

Maybe her entire family was eaten by demons and she was forced to watch as their souls were made into artificial humans and she was tortured until her spiritual powers awoke and she escaped and was recruited by Koenma.

...Course that would be super edgy and I doubt its anything like that.
>>
>>41635040
"The key to fighting is to understand your opponent, rookie," you tell Kara. "Their strengths, their weaknesses, what they like and dislike, their capabilities and techniques. You can't expect to take them all out with brute force and luck. I'm still learning a bit about that, myself."

Koenma actually looks somewhat impressed with what you've just said, while Kara looks like she wants to punch you.

"You have a point there," Koenma admits, "But we both know you aren't training with Kasai to spy on her. Still, you're right; your experience with demons is part of the reason I asked you to take part in this mission."

"Can you tell me anything about the demons I'll be fighting?" you ask.

The image on the screen changes, showing a picture of a creature moving through the forest. It's a bit on the skinny side, black-skinned, with long, white hair stretching down his back. He has a long snout, and a long tongue stretching from it. His hands and feet are clawed, and he has a series of spikes running down his back.

"This is Vardaak," Koenma tells you. "He patrols the forest surrounding the compound. He's fast and powerful, and very good at finding his victims in the forest. We lost three of our intelligence agents to him."

"How many did you send?" Kara asks.

"Five," Koenma answers. "The last two tried to enter the compound, but one was caught by another of the demons."

The image changes again to a four-legged creature with what looks like hundreds of eyes covering its body. It looks somewhat reptilian, and even seems to have a snakelike mouth. Standing beside it is a large bipedal creature with four arms, and covered in red fur.

"These are the only other two demons our last agent was able to get intelligence on," Koenma explains. "But, we expect there are others inside. The four-legged creature is called a Nacinak. They're hound-like creatures that live in the demon realm. Their bodies are covered in eyes that can track body heat."

For all we know, had he not been the MC, he would be a well mannered hard working straight A student, who attends karate with Lucy and always complains about Bruce's antics.

So yes, it is -our- fault John is a shit as it is -our- choices which shaped him and forced him to act in the way -we- voted.

"So your agents never had a chance of getting past it," Kara guesses, pity in her voice.

"No, especially considering powerful that creature's nose is," Koenma tells her. "It probably knew they were coming before they even got past Vardaak. The demon with it is called Sashamp, and that's all we really know. No prior convictions, no known criminal record, but he tore my agent apart."

Koenma sighs, leaning back. "It's a rough bunch you'll be dealing with, which is why I need you both to be as strong as possible when the time comes to fight them."

"I'll do my best," Kara promises. "My training's coming well so far, and I'll give it everything I have."

"Good," Koenma tells her. "I expect no less."

He looks at you again. "You've gotten stronger since you stopped working for me, but it isn't enough. Train as hard as you possibly can!"

"Yes, please," Kara tells you. "I don't want to be slowed down, and I definitely don't want you to die on me when you're supposed to be helping me."

You then look at Kara. "Now, there are some matters I need to talk to Koenma about in private."

"I was about to say the same thing," Koenma tells you. "That's all for now, Kara. Get some rest so you can give training your all tomorrow."

Kara nods respectfully at Koenma. "Yes, sir."

Giving you one last glare, Kara walks out the door, leaving you alone with your former boss, who shakes his head in disapproval.

"I apologize for her," Koenma says sincerely. "She doesn't hold a very high opinion of you."

Eh. In the Yu Yu Hakusho-verse not all devils are evil. So far he hasn't given us a reason to doubt him. Koenma's own interpretation of him might be skewed by old man's Enma's biased nature against the demon world.

After all it is a human whose doing the artificial human thing and not a demon.
>>
>>41636082
"It's no big deal," you tell him. "But, you didn't make me look too bad, did you?"

"She asked about previous detectives, and I told her you were fired for disobeying orders," Koenma tells you. "She asks for specifics, so I told her about Kasai."

"Well, anyway, I've got some new information for you," you tell him.

You explain your arrangement with Koe, and everything that he's revealed to you about the demonic army being raised to attack the human world. Koenma doesn't act with any surprise, but lets you tell him everything before he speaks.

"I already know," he informs you. "I've had agents watching you since you were fired. When you told me about the voice in your head, I was naturally curious, so I decided to see who exactly it was and what their angle is. I have to say, Koe being involved was a surprise."

"What do you know about Koe?" you ask.

"Until recently? Nothing," Koenma answers. "My father never one mentioned him to me, so I had to get some information from our archives. Apparently Koe is one of the most ancient living demons, and once ruled a large portion of the Demon Realm. But, centuries ago, a powerful demon named Raizen rose up and took Koe's throne, and, as far as our records say, killed him. Some said he'd survived the battle with Raizen, but nobody's seen him in over five hundred years. If he's alive, then we could have a very dangerous situation on our hands."

He looks at you with a serious expression. "But you're apparently in a position of confidence with Koe, and that's what I want to talk to you about."

Koenma rises from his chair and floats over to you. "I'd like to offer you your job back, but secretly. As far as anybody else will know, you'll still be a former employee."

"What purpose does hiding that serve?" you ask.

"Because if Koe doesn't know you're working for me again, you'll be able to find out what he's really up to, and, if necessary, help me stop him."

"He'll know I'm spying for you," you tell him. "He probably knows I'm here right now."

"Of course he does, that's why I announced our meeting ahead of time," Koenma tells you.

"Koe is guarding my family and friends," you tell him. "He has eyes everywhere, just like you. I'll work with you and Koe, but only because we'll need both of you to stop this."

Koenma sighs. "Very well. Just be careful with Koe, he's a lot more dangerous than you seem to realize."
