The first thing you notice is that you aren’t in your tent any more.

You sit up sharply, ready for anything. But whoever’s house you’re in, it’s empty. For that matter, it’s not particularly big either, and all your stuff seems to be in relatively the same positions...

Its when you step outside of the house that you finally realise what’s going on. With your view of the town hall right nearby, there’s only one place you could be. Somehow, this is your house, built right where you were sleeping!

You’re thinking about this when you hear a voice from off to your left. “Hello, neighbour!” You turn to see the black furred rabbit from last night. Er, what was her name again? You sort of lost Theo after the fourth or fifth name.

“Hey, um... ,” you say, waving awkwardly, “you?”

Medara shrugs. “It’s no big deal. You just got here yesterday, we can’t expect you to have gotten all our names down quite yet. The name’s still Medara,” she says, holding out a hand. “I must say, I am a bit disappointed. I thought I would have made a bit more of an impression.”

You shake her hand. “Pleased to meet you, Medara. And, I’m really sorry, like I said…”

Medara cuts you off, shaking her head. “Like I said, it’s no big deal. We’ll have plenty of time to get to know each other in the future.” She nods. “Anyways, it’s about time for me to get down to the shop. We get lots of late night workers in, so maybe stop by later for a cup or two, meet some of the guys who didn’t show up last night.” She waves, and leaves.

Well, you suppose it’s about time for you to start your day as well. What will you do?

>Head to the Town Hall to see about this mayor business.
>Head back to Hops. May as well take up Medara on that offer of coffee.
>Wander around. You never know who you’ll bump into.
>Head somewhere else. [Temple, Museum, Plaza, Fishing Shop, Farm, or any House.]

For newcomers, this quest is based on Animal Crossing, with some Rune Factory elements added. The MC's name is Leo, and he's the Mayor of a coastal town called Whiteport, whose map is included here.

As always, there will be a 20 minute window for votes, but if you just miss that window I'll probably count it anyways.

>Head to the Town Hall to see about this mayor business.
You should probably draw up a legend for the map in >>41675056 so people know what's what.

If this IS Animal Crossing, we should probably establish what we and our clothes look like.

Shit, do we even look like a stereotypical Animal Crossing PC, for that matter?
>>
You suppose it’s finally time to see about being a mayor. Enough of this dallying around, to the Mayor’s office! You promptly march the approximately 10 feet between your house and the town hall, all important like.

“Oh, hello Mayor!” It looks like Poppy is still sitting at the post office desk. “How are you today?”

You head up to her desk. “I’m fine, Poppy. Say, I’m… not exactly sure what this mayor business entails.” You notice Poppy’s sceptical look at that. “T-that’s not to say I don’t know how to be a mayor, it’s just… I’m, uh, not sure what I should be dealing with right now?”

Poppy nods. “Well, why don’t we see what the villagers have asked for? Here in Whiteport, we have a requests box, for the villagers to voice their opinions about our little town.” She smiles. “After all, understanding what people want is the first step to making them happy, right Mayor?”

You nod. That seems like fairly common sense. “Alright. So where are these requests?”

“Ah, wait just a moment,” Poppy says. She runs out of her chair and into the cabinets in the back of her office. “I’ve actually been keeping the suggestion box in here, since we didn’t have a mayor for some time. In the future, I’ll leave the box in your office, alright?” She reemerges carrying a small wooden box. “Here we go. Let me just set this down, and we can get started.” She opens up the box, and pulls out a few pieces of paper.

“Hmm. Well, Mayor, it seems that the biggest concern people have is that our town is underdeveloped,” Poppy says, nodding. “To tell you the truth, Mayor, one of these suggestions is actually mine. Whiteport is a peaceful little town, but without roads or infrastructure, we might as well be living in a forest!”
>>
You nod, remembering your own first impression. “Alright then. How can we fix that?”

Poppy thinks for a moment. “I suppose you’ll need to get a town development permit, so that you can start planning construction and development. Here, I have an application form right here!” She hands you the form and a pen, and you get to work filling it out. “You already have a house, which is great, and you’ve met the townspeople as well. At least, most of them, but that should be enough for now. Oh!” She starts, suddenly remembering. “You’ll need a town ID as well! It’s a good thing we assign them right here in the post office.”

You nod, and get into position as Poppy sets up a camera on the counter. “Smile!” she says, taking your picture. There’s a bright flash, and soon enough Poppy is taking the photograph out of the camera. “Oh, you’re quite photogenic, Mayor.” You scratch your head in embarrassment. “Here, why don’t you take a look while I prepare the card?”

You take the picture from her, looking at the person within. It’s been a while since you last looked at yourself, you almost don’t recognise the guy in the photograph.

Your hair is a bit messy, as usual, and you wonder if you should have maybe combed it before getting your picture taken. Ah well, it’s a bit late for that now, and this is probably how you would be meeting people anyways. You think it might actually make you look a bit dashing, if you do say so yourself. Communicates sort of a carefree attitude, or something along those lines.

“ID complete, Mayor.” Poppy calls, holding up a small card with your name on it. “Here, I’ll just fix that picture on here for you.” She fusses around with the picture for a few moments, then sits up. “Done. Now you can just finish up that development permit, and we can get to developing!”

“Thanks, Poppy.” You take the ID, and finish up the form.

--------

“Well then, Mayor, now that we’ve submitted the form, I suppose we can start development.” Poppy says.

You raise an eyebrow. “Already? But didn’t we just submit the form a few seconds ago?”

“Of course,” says Poppy. “The Town Development Form was submitted to the Town Hall office, where it was approved by Poppy, standing in for the Mayor.”

You facepalm. “So you’re saying I filled out that entire form just to submit it to myself?”

“Yup.” Poppy says, smiling. “Now then, we don’t have very many plans yet, but you could always go talk to the villagers to receive more suggestions. For now, we’ve only got these few development options.” She hands you the clipboard.

You draw a quick few lines on your map, and show it to Poppy.

“I’m thinking that maybe we should have a cobblestone road from the station to the Town Hall,” you say, “so that at the very least newcomers won’t have to hike through a forest to get here. Then, maybe we can extend the road over to the plaza, so that it’s easier to get there. That way, visitors have a path directly to our town plaza, where all the shops and everything is.” You then circle a point near the bridge. “On top of that, putting a light here would be helpful, both to help light up the plaza, and to make sure villagers returning home don’t fall in the river.”

Poppy looks delighted. “Great idea, Mayor. With these changes, I’m sure Whiteport will be more exciting in no time! Luckily, all these things can be built by our fellow villagers, so it won’t cost us anything.” She puts away the clipboard. “On the other hand, it’ll take about 2 days for all these things to be built.” She sighs. “If only we had more people capable of helping out. Flint just needs a day to build the lamp post, but with how busy Velour is with her farm, it’ll take her at least two days to get this road built.”

“Wait,” you say, confused. “Why is Velour the only one who can build the road?”

Poppy looks surprised. “Ah, yes. I forgot that you’ve just arrived in town.” She looks sheepishly to the side. “Well, it wouldn’t be my place to tell you. Let’s just say that nobody else in town can build things quite as fast as she can.”

You’re still confused, but you can see that Poppy doesn’t want to share this information. Maybe you could go ask Velour yourself? If you remember correctly, Theo said she worked on the farm?

Then again, maybe Theo might be a bit more forthcoming, and quite a bit closer.

What will you do?

No, you’re properly curious about this. You’re going to get it right from the horse- er, lioness’s mouth. By this point it isn’t too hard to find your way back to the plaza, and from there it’s just a short walk to the farm.

Even from a distance, you can see Velour standing tall amongst the corn stalks. The massive lioness appears to be harvesting the corn, and you can see the huge bag that she’s storing the corn cobs in. You’re pretty sure the bag is bigger and heavier than your entire body, and she’s hefting it like it’s nothing. As you approach, she notices you, and waves.

“Hello, Mayor!” she calls, her voice booming even over the wide distance that separates the two of you. Oh god she’s grinning at you, and you can see all those huge razor sharp teeth in her mouth. You wave back, suddenly feeling a bit apprehensive about all this.

It’s not long before you’ve arrived where Velour is at. She sets down her corn bag and wipes off her brow as she turns to talk to you, towering almost twice your height. “So, Mayor, to what do I owe for this visit of yours, hmm?”

You shake your head, remembering why you came to see her. “Velour, uh, Poppy tells me that you’re the only one capable of building roads for this town. I was just wondering… why is that?”

Velour, by this point, has sat down on a tree stump near the field. She grins. “Well, if you want it to take less than a few weeks, then yeah, I’m the only one who can do it. But I’m not sure if I should tell you or not.” She looks you over. “You might be our new mayor, but to me, you have the look of someone who’s hiding something. Now, I’m not one to go around demanding everyone give up all their secrets, I mean, even I’ve got a couple,” she, chuckling. Then, she points a finger at you, “but I don’t trust just anybody. So first off, I’m going to need to give you a little test."

“A… test?” You wonder what she means by that. Velour doesn’t seem like the type to give out written tests. You look to her for answers, but all she does is point down.

“Wait, what?” You suddenly find that you’re sinking into the ground, and that already you’re buried up to your knees. You try pulling your legs free, but they’re properly stuck. You look again to Velour, who just smiles as you sink further into the dirt.

“Quicksand.” You remember reading about it once, in the library, but you aren’t sure you remember everything about it. The one thing you do remember, though, is that struggling will just make it worse. You fight your urge to struggle as you look around for some way out.

Unfortunately, nothing is immediately within grasp. A bit to your left is a corn stalk, but you’re fairly certain it’s too far away. Just in case, you reach your arm out, but fall short. In that case, the only thing left around you is Velour.

Looking at the lioness, she seems unconcerned, drinking some water out of a bottle while sitting there on her stump. Maybe this is just a test, to see if you’d struggle. Then, as you’re about to go under, she grabs you and pulls you out. That’s probably it, right?

So you wait. Soon enough, the dirt has swallowed you up to your waist, and you wait. It’s as the dirt is swallowing your torso that you remember, isn’t quicksand supposed to be made of sand? And for that matter, isn’t it supposed to be wet? Doubt starts to spring into your mind, but you fight it. Velour seems like she knows what she’s doing, and you’re certainly not calling for help now.

As the dirt reaches your neck and Velour still does nothing, you wonder if this is it. After all that effort to escape, after finding Whiteport, is this it? Just because you gave in to the whims of some possibly crazy lioness?

As the dirt is about to seal over your mouth and nose, you have the presence of mind to take a deep breath. You’re not sure what’s going to happen, but all you can do is stare at Velour as you go under.
>>
Darkness. The musty smell of earth surrounds you, and through your ears you can hear vibrations throughout the earth. A distant clanging hits your ears, and you figure that must be Flint, working on the light post. The smell of corn is still strong, but beneath it, you can smell something that you swear must be strawberries. Maybe Velour used to grow strawberries here too.

On top of that, you suppose you didn’t notice until now, but all around you, the earth feels full of life. Worms, bugs, trees and flowers, even the food you eat comes from the earth. All around you, the earth is full of energy.

[CRITICAL SUCCESS]

You grin. If there’s one thing you understand, it’s energy.

You suddenly find it much easier to breathe, as you find the cracks and tunnels that permeate the dirt. You close your eyes, and take a deep breath.

Wielding a spear is all about concentration. A spear isn’t like a sword, a dagger, or even a bow. A spear is a multiplier, with even the slightest motion causing great rippling effects.

You gather the energy within you, allowing it to rest within your core. From all around you, the earth breathes, giving its energy freely and plentifully. You feel charged with energy, your mind almost overwhelmed by it, but you control it. It’s all about control.

And then, you strike! With a single thrust, you concentrate all the energy into a single motion, with yourself as the spear. With a great crack, you burst out of the earth, sending rocks and pebbles flying in every direction. As you touch down, you can sense that Velour has toppled to the ground without even opening your eyes, feeling the raw vibrations of her heartbeat sounding through the earth.

You open your eyes.

“What?” Velour is looking at you with wide eyes. “WHAT!?”

You frown, looking down at Velour. Suddenly, she doesn’t seem nearly as large. “You know what this is, don’t you.” It isn’t a question. You’re sure now that you felt the same energy when you were sucked into the dirt.

From across the field, you hear a voice. “Hey Velour, are you alright?”

Velour gulps, then turns to yell back. “I’m fine, Zap! I just… dropped the corn bag!” Suddenly remembering herself, she stands back up, brushing herself off. “That was, uh, quite a display. Could you, uh, do that before?”

You shake your head. “No. I… I felt energy in the earth, and… I felt like I could direct it.”
>>
Velour chuckles. “Well, you certainly did that, and them some.” She sighs. “Alright, here’s the deal. I was going to give you the same bit that I usually give people who ask me this. You get sucked in, I save you when you panic, and you accept my explanation that I can just feel the ‘shape of the earth’ or whatever. As far as most of this town is concerned, that’s it.” She hardens her eyes. “But you felt it, didn’t you. The energy in the earth. Let me ask you, why do you think trees and flowers grow so fast here? You had to have had questions when you noticed me harvesting corn in the middle of the summer.”

You glance nervously off to the side. “Um… is there something wrong with that?”

Velour looks at you for a moment, then chuckles. “City boy, huh? Well let me tell you, corn isn’t supposed to be harvested in the summer. Then again, it’s not supposed to grow in under two weeks either. See, the earth here is charged with energy, more so than anywhere else.” She looks off in the distance. “Earth magic has always been a thing, but for the most part, it’s too weak to really matter that much. My mom used to do all sorts of little tricks with magic, convincing our vegetables to grow just a bit bigger than our neighbors’, or being able to tell when my dad and I were coming home. I got her to teach me a bit, but it wasn’t until I moved here that I realised just how much more powerful it can be.”

You glance at your hands, noticing that, despite your recent imprisonment, they’re completely free of dirt and grime. “So how come I can use earth magic, even though I’ve never learned it?”

Velour shrugs. “Some people just have an affinity for it. You’ve got a strong will, that much I can tell, and that really helped you out, but mostly, your affinity is just luck.”
>>
She sets her hands on her legs and stands up. “Well then, I should really get back to picking that corn. I guess you know already how I’m able to build these roads, but could you do me a favor and not spread it around? I’d really rather not have people constantly bugging me about my magic.” She gives you a final nod, then goes back to work, picking corn.

Well, this trip turned out to be quite a bit more educational than you had expected. You weren’t sure what you were expecting, but it certainly wasn’t this. You’re still not sure where you stand in terms of earth magic, other than simply that you have it, but that doesn’t really tell you much.

Wait, maybe you can build the road yourself now?

What will you do?

>Head back into town. To Hops maybe? You feel like you need coffee after that.

You think about heading home for a shower, but then you notice that, strangely, there’s no dirt on you anywhere. You suppose you must have somehow used your magic to remove the dirt from yourself?

Yeah sure, let’s go with that. For now, you feel like getting a coffee. You’re feeling a bit tired, which is odd since it’s still morning and you’ve barely done any exercise, but you suppose if coffee is what you need, then you’ll just have to get some.

It’s a short walk to Hops, but on the way there, you notice that you can still feel the vibrations from before, but faintly. On a whim, you touch your hand to the ground, and suddenly it’s like taking the wool out of your ears. You can feel everyone in the village, just via vibrations. Looking up, you can see Flint working at his forge from here, but you can feel it much more clearly. You can feel the motions of those around you, and even the buzzing of bugs and the movement of worms deep below the surface. Everywhere around you, you can feel vibrations.

As you stand back up, it’s like putting on a blind fold. Everything stops, and it’s back to a world where everything is just what you can see. You… for now, you figure you’ll just have to bear it. You shake your head, and head into Hops.

It’s getting close to noon, so the place is mostly empty, but you spot a ginger furred dog sitting at a table, sipping a drink, and Medara standing behind the counter. She waves to you as you walk in.

“Hey Medara,” you say, sitting down at the counter. “Could I have a cup of coffee?”

Medara smiles as she gets to work. “How do you want it?”

Medara raises an eyebrow. “K.K. Blues, huh? His stuff is pretty rare, but I just so happen to have a few records of his, through a friend.” She leans in conspiratorially. “He claims that K.K. Slider himself shows up to his shop every week! Can you imagine?”

As Medara goes to prepare your coffee, you think on that. From what you’d heard, K.K. Slider was an artist who hated to be tied down, travelling around and refusing to sell his music for anything. You were lucky enough to hear some of his songs a few times, but for him to go to one place every week? It’s unthinkable.

Medara returns soon enough with your coffee, and puts a new record onto her record player. You take the opportunity to drink the beverage while it’s hot, feeling the warmth spread through your body.

Medara smiles as you savor the beverage. “Well you certainly seem to like it. What have you been doing this early, that you’re this tired already?”

Hmm. You consider your options. You don’t really want to lie to Medara, but Velour asked you a favor, and you don’t really want to break that either. “I was working with Velour,” you finally say, as you set down your cup.

Medara winces. “Ooh, so she roped you into helping out, huh. Usually she and Zap can do everything they need to, but occasionally she manages to get someone else to ‘help out’. I swear, she and Zap seem to have all the energy they could ever need anyways, why bother getting others to work for her?”

You shrug. Hoping to drop the subject, you notice the female dog sitting at the table from earlier, who is now scribbling on a notebook. “So who’s that, anyways?”
>>
Medara looks to see where you’re pointing. “Oh, that’s Pepper. She’s the older sister of Charlie, who was here last night. She’s… well she spends a lot of time working on her projects, so she also spends a lot of time here. It’s not really healthy but…” Medara shrugs. “I’ve tried talking to her about it, but she’s an adult. She can do what she wants.” Medara takes back your empty cup. “Well then, do you want to pay now, or should I just put it on your bill?”

Oh, yeah.

>”Wait, I have to pay for things?”
>”Just, uh, put it on my bill, please.”
>”Come on, Medara, I’m your neighbor. How about you don't charge, just this one time?”

"Sorry. I forgot that I came here with nothing in my pockets. But I promise to pay you back as soon as im able. And before I ask for another cup, which was great by the way.
>>
“Could you, uh, put it on my bill?” you ask. “I’m sorry, I don’t really have any money on me. I’ll make sure to bring some next time.”

Medara sighs. “It’s fine. I’m sure I can trust you to pay it back, Mayor, so take as long as you want. If you’re really hard up though, I’d suggest maybe talking to Tam, next door. She’s always looking for people to make deliveries for her. And if you have any skills, such as bug catching, I’m sure Morris would pay you for them. He lives up past the farm.” She indicates the house on your map. It’s the one up in the top left corner. “Most of our villagers can be trusted to work off their debts, so I hope you’re as trustworthy as them, alright Mayor?”

You nod. “I will. And thank you again, Medara, for the coffee. It was delicious.”

With that, you suppose you should go, and figure something out. You’ve still got the bill for the house, you suddenly recall, so you really should find some way to make some money. You step back out of Hops, looking around you. Around the Plaza is a restaurant, Flint’s smithy, what you guess is Theo’s clothes shop, and to your right is Nook’s Cranny. You suppose you could head there, or maybe visit Morris?

Or maybe something else?

You figure you might as well check out the smithy, then head to Nook’s. You’re not too sure about Flint, but you have a few ideas about how you might be able to make some money helping him out.

It’s a short walk across the plaza, but soon enough you find yourself standing before the hot opening to the smithy. Inside, you can see Flint working at his anvil, and from the looks of it, he’s putting together components for the lamp post. He looks up as you enter and waves, but quickly goes back to his work. It looks like you should probably wait until he’s done to talk to him.

For now, you head back to Nook’s Cranny, where Tam is organizing her goods.

“Oh, hello Mayor!” she says, cheerfully. “I hope you find your house satisfactory.”

You nod. “It feels a bit small, but I’m sure it’ll grow on me.”

“Oh good,” she says. “If you find the house too small, we can always expand later, yes. Now then, there is the simple matter of the price.” Oh. You brace yourself for this. “It comes out to a matter of 39,900 bells. I’m sure you’ll be able to pay this off soon enough, yes.”

You’re… not sure how to feel about this. It’s certainly a lot of money, more than you’ve personally had your entire life, but you’re pretty sure houses are supposed to cost well into the millions of bells, from what you’ve heard anyways. Maybe you’re getting a discount?

Regardless… you nod. “Alright.” Now on the other hand, “Tam, Medara told me you were looking for someone to make some deliveries for you. Is that something I could do?”

“Ah,” Tam says, surprised, “Well, most people aren’t really willing to do so, but I suppose I’ll let you do some work, in exchange for removing some part of your debt, yes?” She looks around the shop. “Ah, here is a package that was requested by Flint. Could you take this to him?”

You can’t help but feel like this isn’t really much of a job, delivering something across the plaza, but you were heading back there anyways, so you may as well. “Sure, that’s fine,” you say.
>>
“And be careful, that package is fragile,” Tam says as you exit through the door.

You walk across the plaza, being careful not to jostle the package too much. Back at the smithy, though, Flint is nowhere to be seen. “Flint?” you call out, but he doesn’t respond.

Stepping into the smithy, you notice the heat of the furnace drafting into the room. Especially in the middle of summer, this room is hot and dry. You suppose Flint is probably used to it, though. You soon notice a door to a back room, standing ajar. “Flint?” you call again, but once again there’s no response.

As you open the door, you feel a sudden draft of heat and, looking up, you notice a stream of flame, rushing straight towards you!

Oh, come on.

[End of Session 2]

So yeah, that's session 2. Once again, if you're willing to stick around I'll be doing a bit of Q&A, and you should probably expect the next session to be around the same time Thursday, but follow my QM Twitter if you want to be sure you don't miss it.
