The desert stretches out before you. Blood-stained dunes. The husks of ruined tanks. The sound of mortars. The screams of the dying. Gallian or Imperial. You can't tell from this distance.

This is how you remember the Barious desert. All the battles just blur together unless you focus on one in particular. If you focus hard enough, you can even remember some of the battles from before the desert.

You hear someone call it your name. They need you for… something. That, you can't remember very well.

>Step forward. The battle is where you're needed.
>Step back. You have other things to do now.

You turn around and walk away. You have other things to do right now. More important things.

You wake up in… right, you're in a hotel room in Randgriz. Your squad was assigned to the capital for the duration of the negotiations, although you're not really on duty. General Gunther said that he just wanted you around in case the Gallian Army had to be reorganized and dropped some hints about another promotion. You haven't heard anything concrete yet though.

Ernestine is lying next to you, poking your cheek with her finger.

"You finally woke up," she says.

"Yeah, thanks," you say. "For a minute there, I thought I was going to have another nightmare."

"It's fine," she says. "Just one of the perks of not sleeping alone."

"There are a lot of those."

You get up and sort out your clothes. Fortunately, you had the good sense to prepare your outfit for today before you and Ernestine went to bed. You have no idea where the pants you wore yesterday are.

"So…" Ernestine says. "Do you want to talk about our plans? I'm not in a hurry to settle down and have kids, but if you are…"

"Maybe," you say. "The family home needs someone to look after it, but I think my parents should be able to go back now that the war's over. If I stay in the army, it'll either be with General Gunther or an assignment at Lanseal."

"I did talk to a few officers about becoming an instructor at Lanseal," Ernestine says. "Apparently, they're looking for snipers. I might be able to join you there, but I can stick with Captain DuLac for a few more years if you want to serve under General Gunther."

>"I think I could use a break from the army. Let's just go back to Velde."
>"Lanseal sounds like a good idea. It feels like forever since I've been there."
>"I should stay with General Gunther. We shouldn't rush into things anyway."

"Lanseal sounds like a good idea," you say. "It feels like forever since I've been there and I shipped off to the war almost as soon as I graduated."

"Are you sure you can get an assignment there?" Ernestine asks.

"Mostly sure," you say. "Our losses haven't been as bad as the Atlantic Federation's, but we lost a lot of low-ranking officers. I wouldn't be surprised if Lanseal increased its enrolment and intensified the training regimen until our forces are back up to where they should be. General Gunther's confident that the Empire will agree to a ceasefire until their ongoing conflict with the Federation is over, but we're not taking any chances."

"That would explain why they'd be interested in having me on the staff." Ernestine stands up to give you a kiss. "I'll talk to Captain DuLac and let her know. I'll see you tonight."

"Bye."

You put on your dress uniform and leave the hotel. The hotel staff - and Army the guards stationed at the hotel - give you a respectful greeting or salute as you pass by, but as you exit the hotel, the civilians walking around Randgriz don't seem to notice you.

You need to speak with General Gunther about your plans, but you also need to make sure your squad is sorted out. Neither is particularly urgent though, so you can decide who to visit first.

You decide to visit your squad first. Most of them got their own rooms in hotels closer to the city walls, but they're spread around. Also, Roberta told you that her regular employers were also in the city and that she would be staying with them in order to resume her work as quickly as possible. You'll have to make several trips to talk to everyone.

You decide to visit Vanessa and Jetje first. The two of the are sharing a room in one of the hotels closer to the city walls. It's not that far away, but it still makes some decent exercise for you.

Their hotel also has a few guards, but not as many as yours. You must have gotten housed with all the important army people.

You walk up to their room. Jetje meets you right outside their room.

"Good morning, old boss," she says. "I was just about to go for a run. Want to join me?"

"Sorry, I just had my morning exercise coming all the way here," you say. "I want to check in with the two of you and see how you were doing."

"Sure thing. Come right in."

Jetje leads you back into her room. Vanessa is sitting by the window, eating a muffin.

"Good morning," Vanessa says. "Do you need us for something?"

"Nah, I just wanted to talk," you say. "So, what are your plans now?"

"I'm going back home," Jetje says. "I learned a few things, so I figured I'd become an instructor at the fencing school and teach people how to survive machine guns and mortars and tanks."

"Yeah, that's going to be a popular topic for the next few years," you say.

"I think I'm going to stay with the army for a while longer," Vanessa says. "I heard they were going to keep people around for border patrols."

"Makes sense," Jetje says. "Even if the ceasefire works out and we sign a peace agreement, no one in Gallia wants to take any chances."

>"It sounds like you both have things planned out."
>"I should be at Lanseal soon. Just send a message if you need anything."
>"That's good. Maybe we should have a reunion once the war's over."

"I should be at Lanseal soon," you say. "Just send a message if you need anything."

Jetje smirks. "I'm sure all the students there will have a great deal to learn from your… what, six months of experience?"

"Hey, I killed more people in those six months than most soldiers do in their lifetime," you say. "Or did, up until the war started."

"I'll keep that in mind if I need anything." Vanessa smiles. "Don't be afraid to keep in touch. I'm sure you'll figure out how to find us."

"I'll keep that in mind. Thanks."

You wave them goodbye and decide on your next stop…

You decide to visit Danielle and William next. Their hotels are fairly close, but at this time of the day, they'll probably be at the tank garage. That's a bit of a farther walk and it's outside the city.

In fact, the Gallian Army decided to put as many tanks as possible on display right outside the city to boost morale. You find Danielle and William in one of the maintenance area.

"As I was saying," William says, "a combination of explosive and penetrating ordinance. We can have tank shells that go right through the armor and then blow up the crew!"

Danielle frowns in disapproval. "While I appreciate your thoroughness, that is highly inefficient and - Ah, captain. I was hoping to speak with you."

"No need to call me captain anymore," you say. "What can I do for you?"

"I wanted to introduce you to my daughter, Justinia." Danielle moves over to a girl who looks even younger than you. "She's also a tank commander."

You remember she was also shortlisted for your squad.

"She has 187 confirmed tank kills. I'm told she's done exceptionally well in urban warfare. She's even been asked to join Lanseal as an instructor."

… did the Empire even field that many tanks in the Barious desert.

"My mother has told me much about you, captain," Justinia says. "It's an honour to meet you."

"Likewise," you say. "I expect we'll meet again fairly soon. I'm trying to get transferred to Lanseal as well once things calm down."

"Not bad," William says. "I've been invited to join a research and development team that works with the army. They're interested in some of my ideas concerning explosives."

"And I'll be in Randgriz for the foreseeable future," Danielle says. "Now that the cavalry is being relegated to a purely ceremonial role, I've been asked to help organize the Gallian Army's tank corps. It's important work, but it's primarily administrative."

>"I look forward to reading about your work, both of you."
>"Don't be afraid to ask if I can help you out."
>"I hope we'll be ready for the Empire if there's a next time."

"Well, I don't have much to say in that case," you say. "Good luck with your work and let me know if there's anything I can do. I'd like to be ready if there's a next time."

"Sure thing, boss," William says. "I have a few ideas about bombing snipers that I'd like to experiment with if you have time."

"Yeah… you're going to be on your own with that one, William."

You wave goodbye and head towards your next stop.

You decide to visit Garcia next. She gave you her address before your squad split up in case something came up.

The house itself is quite nice, but it's nothing too special. It's the kind of residence used by nobles and wealthy merchants who frequently visit the capital, but who aren't around often enough to need a permanent house.

You knock on the door. Roberta quickly comes to greet you.

"Welcome, captain," she says. "Please, come in."

You wonder whether or not you should accept her invitation, but you have no reason not to.

"Thank you," you say. "I'm afraid I won't have much time though."

"That's quite alright," she says. "My master wishes to meet you."

You follow Roberta to a small study near the back of a house. There's a young boy sitting on the couch. He looks up and smiles as you arrive.

"Captain, this is my young master, Fernando Garcia," Roberta says. "Young master, this is Captain Renard de Velde, my former superior."

You smile and bow respectfully to Fernando."

"Thank you for keeping Roberta safe, captain," Fernando says. "We were all quite worried about her."

"I assure you, her talents were quite exceptional," you say. "You didn't need to worry yourself too much. Unfortunately, I don't have time to share any war stories right now."

"Of course, you must be busy with the negotiations going on," Fernando says. "I hope we can meet again some time."

You bow once more and Roberta leads you out of the house.

"You've found yourself a good home," you say. "If there's anything you need, just contact me at Lanseal."

"That won't be necessary, captain," Roberta says. "I am more than capable of handling all matters of the Garcia family."

"In that case, good luck."

You depart to your last meeting before you have to meet with General Gunther.

Karl and Nina are both staying in the same hotel closer to the palace. It's not quite as nice as yours, but it's more than sufficient for an officer and a nurse. The two of them are casually chatting in the hotel lounge.

"Hi, boss!" Nina smiles and waves you over.

You take a seat next to her and Karl.

"You two seem to be doing well," you say.

"I'm transferring to a hospital in the capital tomorrow," Nina says. "They've been getting a lot of wounded, so they need more staff. I won't have to kill people anymore!"

That gets her a few odd looks from the other guests.

"And what about you, Karl?" You ask.

"It looks like I'll be able to get a post as a Royal Guard," Karl says.

"That's an impressive assignment," you say. "Congratulations."

"Thanks," Karl says. "It's still mostly a ceremonial job, but they do need trained fencers in case something does happen."

"Well, I'm going to try to get myself assigned to Lanseal, so you can get in touch there," you say.

"I'll keep that in mind," Nina says.

>"Good. Just keep practicing your throwing arm just in case."

"Just keep practicing your throwing arm," you say. "Just in case."

"Go to hell."

"And on that note, I need to meet with General Gunther." You stand up. "Good luck, both of you."

"You too, boss."

General Gunther is currently located in a military building on the palace grounds. The guards at the gate wave you through and let you know that the General is waiting for you in the tank garage. You didn't know there was a tank garage here, but it's not too difficult to find.

You spot Theimer and General Gunther working on some new tank you haven't seen yet. It's Theimer who spots you first.

"Captain, welcome!" He says. "I suppose it's time for us to take a break then, Belgen."

"Might as well." General Gunther closes the panel he was working on. "Shame it's so damn expensive. We could accomplish a lot with more of these." He shakes his head. "But enough of that. De Velde, have you thought about your future assignments?"

"I'm going to see if I can get myself assigned to Lanseal," you say. "Partly for personal reasons, partly because they probably need more staff right about now. I know the good assignments usually go to more experienced officers, but given the circumstances…"

"Right, it'll take years to build up the Gallian Army." General Gunther scratches his beard. "Although if you want to go back to Lanseal, I do need instructors who know how tanks can work with infantry. I think they're also looking for officers who have experience commanding small squads in high-risk missions. Either of those would fit you're combat experience."

>"Tanks are the Army's future. I'll help however I can."

"The students would probably benefit more from my experience with high-risk missions."

"Yeah, your subordinates had a lot to say about those in your evaluations," General Gunther says.

"… I had evaluations?"

"It's best not to think about it and it won't matter much at Lanseal anyway," General Gunther says. "Just don't push any of the students too hard."

"I'm familiar with how it works, sir," you say. "Just enough to help them break through their boundaries, but not enough to put them in any danger. It hasn't been so long that I've forgotten how the training works"

"Excellent, I'll take care of the arrangements," General Gunther says. "Is there anything else?"

"No, sir," you say. "I'll just be on my way."

"In that case, you're dismissed, captain. Do take some time to enjoy the sitting."

You salute and return to your hotel. There are more soldiers around here, but the civilians still don't pay attention to them. At least the soldiers look like they're enjoying the city. Prices have gone up quite a bit from what you remember, but the Gallian Army pays very well.

You return to your hotel room and find Ernestine sitting on the bed waiting for you.

"Welcome back," she says. "It'll take a few days, but I should be able to get a position as an assistant instructor soon. Looks like we're going home."

"Yeah," you say. "We are."

And that's it for First Europan War 1 Quest. I was a lot more mediocre that I thought I'd be, but people showed up to play, so it looks like I did something right. Plus I actually finished it, which is always good.

I'm not quite sure what I'll be doing next. I might take a few months off and get a fresh start with something new.

In any case, thank you for playing and goodnight.

Didn't always notice in time to catch every vote, I was passed out for most of this thread too, but I always got a chance to read them before they 404'd.
