Hey all, hope you’re up for some timeskipping, character development and other exciting stuff! Other than that, no run this weekend as I’m going to the lake with some friends and family where there’s no internet. Hope you all enjoy this thread and that I write faster than last time!
>Fate Point: 2
>Money: $285
>Equipment: Tier 2 Assault Rifle. Tier 2 Armor (+4 wounds). Tier 1 Pistol. Standard Ammo: 3. Tier 1 Knife. Tier 1 Bandolier. (Carry Capacity, 1 Ammo, 1 Misc) Tier 1 Rucksack. (Carry Capacity 4.) Quality Lighter. Tier 1 Med-kit. Tier 2 Med-kit. Tier 1 Toolkit.

Your name is William, though a lot of people call you Billy or Will. It’s been a strange new time in your life these past months. From barely surviving day to day in The Compound, you’ve been rescued by the US Army and then delivered to MMS. At first you thought it was just going to be like The Compound. Looking back now you’re thankful it wasn’t. You didn’t know how different it would be when you got there, but you’ve learned and gained a lot. For one, you have things of your own, clothes, guns, money, ammo, blankets and more. They also feed you regularly and fully as well as Morrigan promising that they would never beat you or try to shoot you. All of that is more than you ever imagined at the compound.
>>
>>41693836
You’ve been learning too, learning how to be more useful. You still fix and clean the guns and armor, but you’ve learned how to fix people now too. Thankfully you haven’t had to use it much at all and barely any on the people at MMS. You’d be upset if they got hurt, they’re all nice to you in their own way.

It’s now been three months since the attack on Fort Riley by the unknown forces from the west. The Army was never able to figure out where they came from and said they didn’t have any “identifying marks” on them. In the end twenty five people from Fort Riley died despite the best efforts of you, Doc Smith, and the medics of the garrison.

Since then MMS has gone back to what you normally do, taking on bandits. Between all of the things that have gone on around the area you’ve had to deal with…

>Light Banditry.
>Moderate Banditry.
>Heavy Banditry.

We should probably avoid heavy banditry. Even if it is good for our wallet.
>>
>>41693976
Meh, I figured bandits would be a common occurrence due to the recent battles. Scavengers, road warriors, and other manner of theives coming out of the woodwork expecting easy pickings.

Its not uncommon in world history. Figured it wouldnt be uncommon here.
>>
Alright, looks like there was moderate banditry.

Writing.

There'll be a few more choices coming.
>>
>>41694035
Yes but heavy bandity means the town might get sieged yet again, this time by bandits, And other big problems.
>>
>>41694079
The thing about bandits is they often dont lay siege to towns, content to raid and pillage supply lines and carivans. The reason is most people who are classified as Bandits like living and a siege is a dangerous operation.

An organized fighting force like the one we saw recently is likely to siege for territory, bandits are likely to extort, pillage, and rape some ranchers and merchants.

Between your assault on Salina and the attack on Fort Riley there was a bit of a stir up of bandits. Though you took out a lot of bandits at Salina, that simply created a vacuum for other bandits to move in from the surrounding areas. Along with the splintering of the attacking force, that meant that there was plenty of work for MMS, though not a terrible amount. You had local jobs once or twice a week and you took out something of a stronghold that was coalescing during the second month. Between all of that you managed to not only keep yourselves fed and supplied with ammo, but you made a little bit of money as well.

With that money you decided that you would…
>Buy some medicine for your pack.
>Buy some more and better books.
>More food and clothes.
>Nothing +$250

Since you weren’t on the move too much, you also had plenty of time to spend at MMS and around Fort Riley. It was strange, having so much free time and people telling you to do something with it. Much of your time was spent reading what you could, making sure that MMS’ gear was ready to go at a moment’s notice, working out with both Cath and Bellona and going to Doc’s with everyone. However if you had to pick you like spent the most time with…

You managed to spend time with nearly everyone during those three months. Learning and shooting with Morrigan, people watching and Melee lessons with Nem, working out and working on guns with Cath, reading and learning about various things with Mary, more shooting and getting to know Sarah and spending some time with Bellona out in the markets learning about people as well as alternating workouts. You also continued to read about and learn things from Doc Smith.

Overall you learned quite a bit of everything, but not a whole lot of anything. You even managed to get your hands on some more books thanks to Koko. Using the money that you earned over those three months you managed to assemble a list with the help of Mary, Doc Smith and a few suggestions from everyone else. You mostly focused on medical texts and a few books on guns, but you let Koko have a bit of leeway with the rest since you didn’t know what she’d be able to find.

She managed to find everything that you wanted, along with a book on “electronics” and one on cars. You weren’t really sure why she got those, but when Mary and Morrigan asked her she said that things were “getting interesting” in the east. You weren’t sure what that meant either, but the books were interesting to read anyway. You’re not sure if you’ll ever get to use the skills they taught, but it didn’t hurt to know things.

> +1 K, +1 T for Will.

At the moment you were sitting in the kitchen with Morrigan and Mary, listening as they discussed possible jobs.

“I really think you should take Koko’s offer Morrigan,” says Mary, “She’s paying a lot of money and you don’t know what kind of gear or jobs you could find back east.”

“I don’t want to be gone the entire winter though,” says Morrigan, “and New York is still a hellhole no matter what they say. Taking the normal convoy to Chicago and back gets us through the winter on money without having to deal with lady nutjob.”

“She’s not crazy Morrigan,” says Mary, “At least not more than anybody else around here is. She’s going along too, so it’s not like you’re going to be hanging out in the wind by yourselves.”

“Damnit I know that,” says Morrigan with a sigh, “I just…”

“You just find her annoying,” says Mary, “She’s still paying twice as much as the Chicago run. If you go east you might find some things we’ve been missing too. You know, new buildings, vehicles, no need to carry around guns all the time. I’ve heard they’re even rebuilding the electrical systems now.”

Morrigan sighs and thinks…

>Going to New York with Koko pays more, I’ll deal.
>Going to Chicago is steady money, we don’t need anything else.

“Fine, we’ll head to New York,” says Morrigan, leaning back with a sigh, “How much is Koko paying again?”

“A thousand dollars a head,” says Mary, “Payment like normal.”

“Half before half after,” sighs Morrigan, “What about food and lodging?”

“She says that she’ll take care of the basics, though nothing beyond that,” says Mary, “So basically if you want to party you’re on your own.”

“I don’t party,” says Morrigan with a sigh, “I go to Doc’s and drink, there’s a difference.”

“Whatever,” says Mary, “You still drink and smoke a lot and Koko isn’t going to pay for it.”

“Fine,” says Morrigan, “When are we heading out?”

“Koko’s taking the same convoy back Kansas City as everyone else, so three days,” says Mary.

“Fine, three days until we head out, any suggestions on what we should pack?” asks Morrigan, tilting her chair back.

“Well we’re going to New York, in winter time,” says Mary, “I would suggest getting some winter clothes.”

“No shit,” says Morrigan, “Though I guess we’ll have to buy them from Koko?”

“Maybe,” says Mary, “she might give them to us if we ask nicely.”

“Koko, giving up something for free?” says Morrigan, leaning forwards and placing her hands on the table, “Ha, that’ll be the day.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to ask,” says Mary, “If not we’ll just buy them anyway.”

“Fine,” says Morrigan, “Might as well pick up our money at the same time.”

“Sounds good,” says Mary, standing up, “I’ll go settle everything up.”

Finally she turns to you, “You want to come Will? I’ll probably need some help carrying everything.”

“Sure,” you say, standing up and following after Mary.

“Try not to get into a fight with Koko,” says Morrigan.

“Nobody gets in fights with Koko except you,” says Mary with a smile.

“Yeah yeah,” says Morrigan, “Just hurry it up so I know how much I’m going to have to take with me when we go.”

“Yes boss,” says Mary, leading the way out of the kitchen.

You follow after her, stopping at her desk as she pulls out a long length of cloth that you haven’t seen before. She notices you looking at it and grins as she wraps it around her neck.

“It’s a scarf,” she says without you having to ask, “It’s to protect against the cold.”

You nod. It has been getting a bit colder over the past few months, with this being the last major group supposed to leave Fort Riley until next spring. Mary and Morrigan discussed that when they were talking about the job.
>>
>>41697834
Mary looks at you as you follow her out of the MMS building.

“Are you cold Will?” she asks.

You’re still wearing the same clothes you bought from Koko earlier in the year, so while you aren’t exactly cold, you’re not really warm either.

“A little,” you admit, the crisp late autumn/early winter air raising goosebumps on your arms.

“You should’ve said something,” says Mary, “We could’ve bought you warmer clothes earlier.”

You nod your head to Mary’s statement. It’s definitely not the coldest you’ve ever been and you had blankets when you slept so it wasn’t too bad. But if Mary says that you should speak up about it you will next time. You follow Mary through the market, getting occasional waves from the people that you’ve met. It’s not a lot of them, but you occasionally talk to some people while out with Bellona or at Doc’s and you’ve been told it’s polite to wave back.

You quickly make it to Koko’s, where you find her and her normal group of helpers all bundled up in what looks like winter gear. It looks very warm, at least you assume so because Koko doesn’t seem affected by the cold at all.

“Mary, Will,” she calls out happily upon your approach, “You’ve come to see me, I take it there’s good news then.”

“Yes,” says Mary, holding the scarf tight around her neck, “Morrigan agreed to go with you to New York for the season.”

“Good, good,” says Koko, her smile containing what you think is actually a little bit of truth to it, “While I trust my men completely, there’s just a little bit too much going on in the east to do it by ourselves.”

“You’re expecting trouble?” asks Mary.

“Things have been getting restless back east,” says Koko with a shrug, “The government is still holding on for the moment, but there’s been signs that a few of the secessionist movements aren’t’ quite done yet. More bandits than normal, a few more outspoken people, even business has been difficult on occasion even with my connections.”

“Well since we’re headed to New York we thought it might be good to acquire some winter clothes for all of us,” says Mary, looking over at Koko’s pile of clothes. There’s a lot more warm and fluffy looking things than when you were here before.

“Oho,” says Kok with a grin that you know is feigned, “I heard acquire, not buy. Are you expecting a handout from me?”

“Expecting no,” says Mary, turning to Koko, “Just discussing. We will be working together for the next few months and us freezing our asses off isn’t going to help you at all.”
>>

>>
>>41697866
It’s at this moment a gust of cool air blows across the market, cutting through your relatively thin clothes and causing you to shiver in response. Koko seems to notice and Mary takes the time to press her advantage.

“I mean look at Will,” she says, “He’d probably go along without anything more than that and a blanket and you wouldn’t hear him complain until his gun froze into his hands.”

You frown, remembering a time that happened to one of the men at the compound. He’d fallen asleep on watch without his gloves on and…well it had been really gross to clean afterwards.

Koko frowns a little but glances back to the leader of her men, “What do you think Lem?”

“I think that keeping our help alive so they can actually help is a good idea, Koko,” he says with a grin, “I also think if that boy right there keeps growing at the rate he does he’ll need to give back his clothes anyway.”

Koko nods, looking up at you. “You’re probably right Lem,” she says, pursing her lips. “What do you say to that Mary, I supply you with the gear and you give it back in good condition hmm?”

Mary looks at you. “What do you think Will?”

This picture is horrible. First you see the blanket scarf thing, so when you click your attention is focused on that. But as your attention shifts you begin to notice the rest of his getup, piece by piece, because at a glance before you open it it looks normal enough for an uncanny valley effect as with mounting horror the rest of the outfit is noticed. I don't give a fuck about fashion. Just like I don't care about my hair, I keep it short so I never have to even notice it. Saying someone who grows it out, dyes it and then styles it to look like a postmodern art exhibit doesn't give a fuck about their look is wrong. That's making a statement, and that takes effort, not apathy. Lenny had to buy those clothes man. And then wear them. Oh man I can't take it.

You shrug your shoulders at her. “It’s a good idea,” you say to Mary, “But we might get shot.”

Before Mary can even say anything you hear Koko snort and then start to laugh a little bit. You turn to find her fighting back laughter with her hand against her mouth. You turn and look at Mary, wondering what you said. She just looks at you and shakes her head in return.

“Oh Will,” says Koko, “This is why I like you, always straight to the point. If you get shot while wearing my clothes, I’ll give them to you, how’s that? Blood isn’t good for selling.”

You just nod, thankful that Koko still wants to give you the clothes. With the deal concluded Koko starts directing her people to pick out clothes for all of you.

“Sizes are mostly fine except for you Will…” says Koko, holding up something roughly the size you bought from her the first time, “You’re still growing.” She tosses something back into a pile and pulls out something bigger, holding it up again. You dutifully stand still and spread your arms for her so she can measure properly.

“Hmm…” she says, “This should do. A little bit big but you’re still filling out right?”

“Yeah,” you say, remembering all the times that Bellona had commented on it since that day. Morrigan and Mary had said similar things. Cath had even noted it once when you were working out with her.
>>
>>41698996
“Alright then, that should be everything,” says Koko, gesturing to the rather large pile of winter clothes in front of you, which included pants, shirts, a jacket for every one and even some gloves, “Unless you would like to purchase something from me as well?”

Looking around at Koko’s things, you can’t find anything that you really need at the moment. However you do spot a nicely sized rucksack that looks to be in a bit better condition than the one you have. You point to it and then notice a pile of assorted long cloth near the clothes. You look over at Mary, more specifically her neck, then back to the pile. “Scarf,” you say. One last glance along Koko’s counter leaves you wanting nothing more...until you realize that what you thought was more clothes or a pile of blankets is actually just one blanket, a big, fluffy and warm looking one, perfect for staying warm in nearly any kind of cold weather. “That,” you point at the wonderfully sized blanket, which even looks like it might be weatherproofed.

Koko smiles at you, seemingly happy that you’ve bought something. “Good choices,” she says as the goods are brought over. When the transactions are done, you put the clothes in your new rucksack, wrap the scarf around your neck and tie the blanket into a big bundle that can hang from the bottom. Hefting it rather easily, you wave goodbye to Koko and Co as you and Mary head back to MMS.
>>
>>41699015
“You don’t like being cold do you Will?” asks Mary.

You shake your head no. You remember several nights that you don’t like to think about too much where you weren’t sure if you were going to wake up in the morning it was so cold. You survived, clearly, but the memories have stuck with you.

“Well since I’m going with you on the trip, let me know if you get cold,” she says with a grin, “I’ll make sure we all stay warm.”

You nod to her, wondering how she might do that. Your mind flits back to the night in the garage when they talked about how other people are warm to sleep with. Maybe that’s what Mary meant. But Morrigan said you should talk to her about it before you do that. Hmm…

You decide that you should wait to talk about that with Morrigan like she said. It’s not like you’re desperately cold or anything, it’s just that you want to make sure you’re ready in case you are. It would suck having to find Morrigan and get her permission if you were already cold. You and Mary make your way back to the MMS building relatively quickly, a few more waves thrown your way.

Entering you find that Morrigan has disappeared again, likely upstairs or perhaps to Doc’s, though it’s still early for that. Sarah is sitting at the desk like she does sometimes when Mary isn’t there, reading a book. You should probably spend more time with her, she likes to read nearly as much as you and Mary do.

Sarah looks up as you enter, taking in your rucksack. “Get something good?” she asks, setting down her book.

“We got Koko to give us a deal on winter clothes since we’re going to be working with her up in New York.”

“New York New York?” asks Sarah, “Cause I’ve never been there. I hear upstate is still pretty messed up though.”

“As far as I know,” says Mary as you set your bag down, letting her dig through it and hand Sarah her clothes and removing her own, “But we may move upstate if Koko feels the need.”

“It’ll be interesting to see what happened to it since the fall,” says Sarah, “Is the Statue of Liberty still there?”

“Last I heard,” says Mary, thought that was a few years ago.

“Hope it still is,” says Sarah, “I always lked it.”

You look back and forth between the two of them for as they speak.

“Something wrong Will?” asks Sarah.

“…What’s the Statue of Liberty?” you ask them.
