Between your assault on Salina and the attack on Fort Riley there was a bit of a stir up of bandits. Though you took out a lot of bandits at Salina, that simply created a vacuum for other bandits to move in from the surrounding areas. Along with the splintering of the attacking force, that meant that there was plenty of work for MMS, though not a terrible amount. You managed to spend time with nearly everyone during those three months. Learning and shooting with Morrigan, people watching and Melee lessons with Nem, working out and working on guns with Cath, reading and learning about various things with Mary, more shooting and getting to know Sarah and spending some time with Bellona out in the markets learning about people as well as alternating workouts. You also continued to read about and learn things from Doc Smith.

Overall you learned quite a bit of everything, but not a whole lot of anything. You even managed to get your hands on some more books thanks to Koko. Using the money that you earned over those three months you managed to assemble a list with the help of Mary, Doc Smith and a few suggestions from everyone else. You mostly focused on medical texts and a few books on guns, but you let Koko have a bit of leeway with the rest since you didn’t know what she’d be able to find.

She managed to find everything that you wanted, along with a book on “electronics” and one on cars. You weren’t really sure why she got those, but when Mary and Morrigan asked her she said that things were “getting interesting” in the east. You weren’t sure what that meant either, but the books were interesting to read anyway. You’re not sure if you’ll ever get to use the skills they taught, but it didn’t hurt to know things.

You nod. It has been getting a bit colder over the past few months, with this being the last major group supposed to leave Fort Riley until next spring. Mary and Morrigan discussed that when they were talking about the job.

“You should’ve said something,” says Mary, “We could’ve bought you warmer clothes earlier.”

You nod your head to Mary’s statement. It’s definitely not the coldest you’ve ever been and you had blankets when you slept so it wasn’t too bad. But if Mary says that you should speak up about it you will next time. You follow Mary through the market, getting occasional waves from the people that you’ve met. It’s not a lot of them, but you occasionally talk to some people while out with Bellona or at Doc’s and you’ve been told it’s polite to wave back.

You quickly make it to Koko’s, where you find her and her normal group of helpers all bundled up in what looks like winter gear. It looks very warm, at least you assume so because Koko doesn’t seem affected by the cold at all.

“Mary, Will,” she calls out happily upon your approach, “You’ve come to see me, I take it there’s good news then.”

“Yes,” says Mary, holding the scarf tight around her neck, “Morrigan agreed to go with you to New York for the season.”

“Good, good,” says Koko, her smile containing what you think is actually a little bit of truth to it, “While I trust my men completely, there’s just a little bit too much going on in the east to do it by ourselves.”

“You’re expecting trouble?” asks Mary.

“Things have been getting restless back east,” says Koko with a shrug, “The government is still holding on for the moment, but there’s been signs that a few of the secessionist movements aren’t’ quite done yet. More bandits than normal, a few more outspoken people, even business has been difficult on occasion even with my connections.”

“Well since we’re headed to New York we thought it might be good to acquire some winter clothes for all of us,” says Mary, looking over at Koko’s pile of clothes. There’s a lot more warm and fluffy looking things than when you were here before.

“Oho,” says Kok with a grin that you know is feigned, “I heard acquire, not buy. Are you expecting a handout from me?”

“Expecting no,” says Mary, turning to Koko, “Just discussing. We will be working together for the next few months and us freezing our asses off isn’t going to help you at all.”

Koko nods, looking up at you. “You’re probably right Lem,” she says, pursing her lips. “What do you say to that Mary, I supply you with the gear and you give it back in good condition hmm?”

Before Mary can even say anything you hear Koko snort and then start to laugh a little bit. You turn to find her fighting back laughter with her hand against her mouth. You turn and look at Mary, wondering what you said. She just looks at you and shakes her head in return.

“Oh Will,” says Koko, “This is why I like you, always straight to the point. If you get shot while wearing my clothes, I’ll give them to you, how’s that? Blood isn’t good for selling.”

You just nod, thankful that Koko still wants to give you the clothes. With the deal concluded Koko starts directing her people to pick out clothes for all of you.

“Sizes are mostly fine except for you Will…” says Koko, holding up something roughly the size you bought from her the first time, “You’re still growing.” She tosses something back into a pile and pulls out something bigger, holding it up again. You dutifully stand still and spread your arms for her so she can measure properly.

“Hmm…” she says, “This should do. A little bit big but you’re still filling out right?”

“Yeah,” you say, remembering all the times that Bellona had commented on it since that day. Morrigan and Mary had said similar things. Cath had even noted it once when you were working out with her.

“Alright then, that should be everything,” says Koko, gesturing to the rather large pile of winter clothes in front of you, which included pants, shirts, a jacket for every one and even some gloves, “Unless you would like to purchase something from me as well?”

Looking around at Koko’s things, you can’t find anything that you really need at the moment. However you do spot a nicely sized rucksack that looks to be in a bit better condition than the one you have. You point to it and then notice a pile of assorted long cloth near the clothes. You look over at Mary, more specifically her neck, then back to the pile. “Scarf,” you say. One last glance along Koko’s counter leaves you wanting nothing more...until you realize that what you thought was more clothes or a pile of blankets is actually just one blanket, a big, fluffy and warm looking one, perfect for staying warm in nearly any kind of cold weather. “That,” you point at the wonderfully sized blanket, which even looks like it might be weatherproofed.

Koko smiles at you, seemingly happy that you’ve bought something. “Good choices,” she says as the goods are brought over. When the transactions are done, you put the clothes in your new rucksack, wrap the scarf around your neck and tie the blanket into a big bundle that can hang from the bottom. You nod to her, wondering how she might do that. Your mind flits back to the night in the garage when they talked about how other people are warm to sleep with. Maybe that’s what Mary meant. But Morrigan said you should talk to her about it before you do that. Hmm…

You decide that you should wait to talk about that with Morrigan like she said. It’s not like you’re desperately cold or anything, it’s just that you want to make sure you’re ready in case you are. It would suck having to find Morrigan and get her permission if you were already cold. You and Mary make your way back to the MMS building relatively quickly, a few more waves thrown your way.

Entering you find that Morrigan has disappeared again, likely upstairs or perhaps to Doc’s, though it’s still early for that. Sarah is sitting at the desk like she does sometimes when Mary isn’t there, reading a book. You should probably spend more time with her, she likes to read nearly as much as you and Mary do.

Sarah looks up as you enter, taking in your rucksack. “Get something good?” she asks, setting down her book.

“We got Koko to give us a deal on winter clothes since we’re going to be working with her up in New York.”

“New York New York?” asks Sarah, “Cause I’ve never been there. I hear upstate is still pretty messed up though.”

“As far as I know,” says Mary as you set your bag down, letting her dig through it and hand Sarah her clothes and removing her own, “But we may move upstate if Koko feels the need.”

“It’ll be interesting to see what happened to it since the fall,” says Sarah, “Is the Statue of Liberty still there?”

“Last I heard,” says Mary, thought that was a few years ago.

“Hope it still is,” says Sarah, “I always lked it.”

You look back and forth between the two of them for as they speak.

“Something wrong Will?” asks Sarah.

“…What’s the Statue of Liberty?” you ask them.
