What's the deal with harpies?
>>
I remember the first time I read the word "harpy" decades ago, it wasn't described as a hot woman monster.
The only trait that stuck with me was that it's constantly shitting, all day long, unbelievable amounts.
Is that a thing in the old myths? I haven't seen it mentioned since then, so it's probably just the one writer making shit up.
>>
Nothing wrong with Harpies, not 'less yer a faggit

where do you think the myth came from?

Some greek dude had his gyro snatched up by a seagull and he didnt want to look like a bitch to his friends so he said it was a huge bird woman with fat tits.

From Wikipedia
>For this reason he was also tormented by the Harpies, who stole or defiled whatever food he had at hand or, according to the Catalogue of Women, drove Phineus himself to the corners of the world. According to scholia on the Odyssey, when asked by Zeus if he preferred to die or lose sight as punishment for having his sons killed by their stepmother, Phineus chose the latter saying he rather never see the sun, and consequently it was the scorned Helios who sent the Harpies against him.
So, basically, Helios sent harpies to "defile" (read: shit on) Phineas' food because Phineas didn't choose death over never seeing the sun again.
Helios sounds like a jealous girlfriend

Actually that is in the original legends. In the Odyssey King Phineus of Thrace was cursed by Zeus for using the gift of prophecy that the gods had given him to spoil their plans.

As punishment, Zeus trapped him on an island with harpies. Every day a huge buffet of food would appear in the center of the island but before Phineus could eat, the harpies would swoop in, devour it and "befoul" the remains.

Not everything is to do with Japan you filthy weaboo.

Probably the most prominent and famous centaur in myth was a subversion of what people thought of as centaurs. He was wise rather than debauched and this coloured pretty much every subsequent portrayal of centaurs. Even the ones portrayed as wild and animalistic tend to have some sort of folksy nature wisdom and the 'getting drunk and slapping cunts' aspect of centaurs has almost entirely fallen by the wayside.

I'm currently trying to work an avian race into my setting that isn't just straight-up harpies or bird-people, but having a hard time thinking of ways to keep their wings low-key until they open them for flight. Also, hands.

The Rito from LoZ:Wind Waker come to mind, but their wings not being visible until they fly seems to use hammerspace.

Should I just slap some magic on there for instantaneous transformation from arms to wings, or is there a more creative and verisimilitude-preserving solution?

Good choice.
If I were you, I wouldn't make it magical or transformative at all. That is, they can pick things up in their hands or they can fly, but not both at the same time. I guess it comes down to the tone of your game a little bit, but if WW can use hammerspace in a visual medium why can't you use the same rules when you're just imagining the action?
>>

>>
>>41755520
You could do something beetle-like where the wings are actually hidden beneath chitinous plating.
Or just have them folded away most of the time, making their arms oddly shaped and cumbersome.

Wings would be fairly cumbersome when not in flight and not suited to most armors/clothing, and if those limbs were wings all the time they'd be just be harpies without huge talons (and their own males).

WW is also decidedly cartoony and has vidya logic. Link can carry a ludicrous number of bombs and arrows and thousands of these apparently-fist-sized rupees. The first thing my players would ask when I say they sprouted wings would be "how?", whereas in WW you just kinda accept it for what it is.

Looks like it's huge wings or magic. I guess I just don't want them to be too disconnected from their progenitor race, who originally lacked wings. I kinda want it to be a surprise when this somewhat off-looking humanoid suddenly takes flight, but I guess magic is the only way to accomplish that.

There's nothing wrong with having a race of bird people but when you think that "fat thighs" and "they snatch up strong men and make them their sex slaves forever" are important as being core class features then it comes off as creepy and fetishistic.

You completely brush over more important questions (do they wear armor? How do they put it on? What weapons do they use? Are their cities and fortresses set up in such a way that they're inaccessible without flying? ) so you can just skip to description pieces that make your penis hard

Depends where the bird part terminates. If it's from toe to waist, cloaca. If it's from toe to thigh, vagina/penis.

I prefer to think that harpies, dragonborn, dragons, kobolds, and other lizard/bird races have cloaca, and that mermaids just lay eggs and leave for you to fertilize them.

Basically, breeding with a human would be POSSIBLE but really awkward and confusing and not altogether what either of them expect.

I'm thinking he means basically they have a shit ton of wing skin, but when their wings are down it looks all folded around them like a feather cloak. Kind of like how a flying squirrel's skin folds dissapear into their fur, but with more feathers and less leg attachment.

You'd need freakishly long finger bones to make it work though, and you'd still end up with more dragon than bird - the whole point of feathers is you don't need huge sections of (heavy) skin like that in the first place.

This is pretty much how a Swan Maiden works. It keeps it's "wings" as a cloak, and when it wants to fly it merges with the cloak and transforms into a swan. If somebody steals it's cloak though it loses it's ability to transform and fly. Kind of a cool monster.

Harpies aren't quite that dumb, though they do forget things pretty quick when they're not actually paying attention.

It's a gag that's used infrequently in the show / manga.

Prettymuch an issue of short -> long term memory conversion. If it makes the jump it's there for a while, if it doesn't well... yeah.
>>
>>41764161
Well actually, people forgot whether sirens were fishgirls or birdgirls because they live on an island, or in the water around an island, or something ambiguous. What people remember is that they could sing. Fish can't sing, and mermaids are already a thing, so therefore sirens had to be birdgirls.

But also harpies are birdgirls. Must be the same thing. And then people forgot about which ones sirens were and just used 'mermaid' or 'harpy'.

"How beautiful the Centaurides are, even where they are horses; for some grow out of white mares, others are attached to chestnut mares, and the coats of others are dappled, but they glisten like those of horses that are well cared for. There is also a white female Centaur that grows out of a black mare, and the very opposition of the colours helps to produce the united beauty of the whole."

Philostratus the Elder, Greek rhetorician

"In the high woods there was none comelier of all the centaur-girls, and she alone by love and love’s sweet words and winning ways held Cyllarus, yes, and the care she took to look her best (so far as that may be with limbs like that). She combed her glossy hair, and twined her curls in turn with rosemary or violets or roses, and sometimes she wore a pure white lily. Twice a day she bathed her face in the clear brook that fell from Pagasae’s high forest, twice she plunged her body in its flow, nor would she wear on her left side and shoulder any skin but what became her from best-chosen beasts."

Im trying to make a civilization based around the monster musume type of harpy with some changes for a pathfinder setting. I like them living in mountains and being dumb, but what exactly would that society be based around? For intance elves are treefuckers, dwarves are miners, humans are techies, etc. but what would bird people be like?
