You are Leo. You’re the newly appointed mayor of a little town called Whiteport, a surprisingly good Earth Magic adept, a proficient spear wielder, a beginning fisherman, and are running from your mysterious past in a faraway city. You’re still getting on your feet, here in Whiteport, but you really hope you can have a quiet life here.

“So are you here to buy something?” Tam Nook says, gesturing around her shop. “I still have the clearance items from before, but if you request something I could see if I have anything available, yes?”

You look back to the clearance table. On it sits a Bug Catching Net, a Watering Can, a Shovel, a Gardening Hoe, a Cooking Pot, and a Metal Smithing Hammer. If you recall correctly, all items on that table are just 500 Bells.

Around the rest of the shop sit various assorted objects of every description, from lamps to radios to shower curtains to trumpets. You have no idea how Tam can find anything in this mess, but from the looks of things, she has some organization system that works for her. Maybe she could find you something if you asked her about it?

What will you do?

For newcomers, this quest is based primarily on Animal Crossing, with some parts borrowed from Rune Factory, as well as a great deal of completely original elements. The protagonist is Leo, mayor of Whiteport, whose map is attached here.

As always, the voting period lasts for 20 minutes after a post, but if you barely miss the window, I’ll probably accept your vote anyways. In some locations (such as shops) where clarifications are required, I may post “Semi-Update”s, which extend the voting period.

All rolls are Best of Three, with 1s overriding higher values, and 20s overriding 1s.

“I’ll have these three,” you say, picking up the Shovel, Cooking Pot, and Gardening Hoe. “The fishing rod was really helpful, so I may as well try out some other things as well.”

Tam nods. “Very good, yes. The total comes to 1,500 Bells.” You pull out your Bell bag, counting out the amount. “As for learning to use them, Shelby, at the restaurant nearby, would be delighted to help you to learn cooking. I can sell you a stove, yes, but she will help you to learn to use it.” She points then at the shovel. “Odwin, at the museum, would be the best one to talk to if you wish to learn about archeology. However, if you merely want to use the shovel for gardening, Velour, who works at the farm, is who you should talk to, yes. The same goes for the gardening hoe.”

You nod, putting the group of tools away. “Thanks, Tam.” It’s getting late, so you aren’t sure if you’ll be able to properly learn to use these tools today, but having these would be useful for the future.

“Oh, and one more thing,” Tam says. “If you wish to pay your house debt, please do so at the Town Hall, yes? I have already charged the bill to your office, so there is no need to pay it here.”

Oh yeah, the debt. “Er, thanks for letting me know, Tam.” You’re pretty sure Tam said that you have as long as you want to pay it off, but you figure it would be for the best if you don’t delay it for too long. Besides, that way you could get a bigger house too!

At this point, you figure you could either continue shopping, or head off somewhere else. It’s starting to get late, so you aren’t sure how much longer the other villagers are going to be awake for. It would probably be best to complete any business you have with them now.

You feel a bit undecided as to where to go next, but ultimately it’s the growling in your stomach that makes the decision for you. Shelby’s it is.

Shelby’s restaurant is a short walk across the plaza, but on your way you see that it looks like Velour has at least started on the road you asked for. It’s still just a dirt road, but you’re pretty sure it’ll be lined with stones soon enough. Maybe you could see about helping her out, to speed up the process? That’s a thought for another time, though.

Shelby’s restaurant isn’t particularly grand. The facade is merely an open glass wall, inviting customers in, and inside there are a few large tables for customers to sit at, as well as an window to the kitchen. You don’t see any waiters, so you suppose Shelby must both cook and serve the tables herself. In that case, it’s probably for the best that this town is still small.

The restaurant isn’t anywhere close to packed when you arrive, but Velour and Zap are sitting at one table, while Flint, along with the other three you saw with him yesterday, are at another. Velour waves to you when she spots you, and you wave back as you reach the window to the kitchen.

Inside, you can see Shelby cooking at some sort of large wide pot. “I’ll be with you in just a moment, alright?” she says, noticing you approach. “Oh, hey Mayor! Nice to see you again, after last night.” You nod as you remember. She’s the one who was singing on stage last night, and who introduced you to the crowd. “I hope I didn’t put you too on the spot back there,” she says.

You shake your head. “It was a good way to get to introduce myself to everyone. If anything, it helped me not have to introduce myself to everyone I’ve met today.”

She grins. “Well alright, I’m glad I could be of help then.” She turns off the stove and comes over to the counter. “Well then, what do you need?”

“Hmm.” You look over to what she was cooking in the wide pot. “What sort of cooking pot is that?” you ask.
>>
“Oh, it’s a Wok,” she says. “It’s mostly used for cooking up stir frys and such, but it can also be used for steaming, boiling, roasting, and all sorts of other stuff.” She picks it up by both handles to show it to you. “Right now I’m making some fried rice. Do you want some?”

You shrug. “Sure, why not. How much is it?”

Shelby thinks for a moment. “Well, I was already making this for those four out there,” she points to Flint and the others, “so since it’s your first day as Mayor, why don’t I give you a free dinner?”

“Oh, thanks!” you say. You aren’t about to turn down a free meal. Shelby pulls out five bowls and scoops the fried rice into it, setting them on the counter.

“Flint, Charlie, Est, Mike!” Shelby calls out. “Your rice is ready!”

You pick up your bowl, and make room for the four of them to get their own. Flint once again gives you a nod as he passes, but little else. The four of them head back to their own table and sit back down.

You suppose you could just eat this fried rice on your own, or you could go sit with one of the two groups.

What will you do?

You suppose that, out of the two tables, Velour and Zap’s table is the more inviting of the two. You head over with your bowl.

“Hey Velour,” you say as you arrive. “Could I sit here?”

Velour nods, and you sit down to eat. Zap raises an eyebrow as you do, though. “Who’s this, Velour? Your boyfriend?”

Velour rolls her eyes. “Zap, this is the Mayor. Remember, from last night?”

“This guy’s our new mayor? He looks like some drifter who’s never worked an honest day in his life.” he says, frowning. “I mean, aren’t mayors supposed to be official? Or, you know, at least old enough to have graduated college?”

“Be nice, Zap,” Velour says. “Leo here’s earned my trust.”

Zap gives a look of disbelief to Velour. “Wait what? Him?” Velour nods, and Zap sighs. “Fine.” He holds out a hand to you. “The name’s Zap. I help out Velour at the farm, and I’m not sure how you’ve gotten her to trust you so quickly, but as long as she’s vouching for you, I’ll trust you.”

You… well you didn’t want to interrupt Zap and Velour’s discussion earlier, but you’re not too sure how you feel about Zap. For now though… “Thanks, I guess,” you say, shaking his hand. Just from his grip, you can tell that he’s a lot stronger than you had at first expected, given his size.

Zap gives you a nod, then goes back to his discussion with Velour. You continue eating your fried rice, but you suppose if you wanted to say something to Velour or Zap, now would be the time.

You feel like you should probably ask Velour about the whole “walking barefoot” thing, since she has more experience in matters of Earth Magic than you do. But with Zap sitting right there…

“So Velour,” you say, “I just bought some tools at Tam’s, and I was thinking of maybe starting my own garden. Do you have any advice for how I could get started?”

“Oh,” says Velour, grinning. “So the city boy is interested in learning to farm, huh?” Zap rolls his eyes, but Velour seems proud. “Alright, first of all, you’ve got to have good soil. Lucky you, the soil around here is some of the best.” She gives you a wink. “See, good soil is living soil, breathing soil, so you’ve got to make sure that your soil is good and fresh. You can’t just count on the freshness of Whiteport soil, though. If you want your plants to grow, you can’t just drop seeds into the dirt and hope they grow. First off, you’ve got to make sure the soil is nice and loose, so that the seeds have room to stretch their roots. That’s what a hoe’s for.”

You nod. “I’ve got one of those, so that’s good, right?”

”Yeah, that’s good,” Velour says. “There’s other sorts of tools you can use as well, but in my mind, nothing beats a good old fashioned hoe. On top of that, plants need food and water, just like you and I. Make sure to give the seeds water every day, and give them some fertilizer from time to time as well. I could get you some, or I suppose you could make some yourself. Tam’s probably got a few bags of the stuff too.”

“Hmm.” You make a mental check list. “Hoe to break up the soil, seeds to plant, water every day, plus fertilizer. Is that right?”

Velour nods to the affirmative. “On top of that, if you grow too much in one spot, over and over, the soil gets tired. Fertilizer will help with that, and there’s some plants you can use to prevent that, but nothing helps the soil more than just letting it rest.”

You nod. That makes sense, you suppose.
>>
You notice Zap has gotten up to go talk to Shelby. Here’s your chance. “So Velour, you know how you can sense stuff through the ground with Earth Magic?”

Velour looks around quickly before responding. “Yeah. What about it?”

“Well,” you pause. “Since you need to be in contact with the ground for it to work, it makes more sense to be barefoot, right? But won’t people think it’s strange if I’m not wearing shoes?”

“...” You look up to see Velour giving you an incredulous look. “Really? That’s what you’re worried about? Leo, let me ask you. Am I wearing shoes right now?”

You look under the table at her feet. “No, you’re not.”

“But you had to check,” says Velour. “See, nobody cares about what you’re wearing on your feet. I bet if you just stopped wearing shoes, almost nobody would even notice. On top of that, if they do, so what? Just say you like not wearing shoes. Nobody’s going to judge you.” She chuckles. “Well, maybe Theo, but that’s just because he won’t be able to sell you shoes any more.”

“Oh.” Could it really be that easy? You suddenly remember that you’ve actually been barefoot all afternoon, and nobody’s said anything. “Well then, I guess that’s that.”

“Yup,” says Velour. “Now then, if you’re interested in learning more, about farming or earth magic, feel free to seek me out. I like you, Leo, and I think you’ve got a lot of potential to be a great mayor.” With that she stands up, going to meet up with Zap and Shelby.

You’ve finished dinner, and the sun is beginning to dip under the horizon. What now?

OP?
You alive out there?
>>
It’s getting dark, but you figure you have time to go see Odwin, at least. You’re pretty sure he’s the mouse you saw sleeping at the Museum yesterday.

This time, however, he’s still awake, and sitting at the counter. As you arrive, he seems both nervous and excited. “Oh, hello there Mayor how are you today my name’s Odwin and I run the museum, say, whatever are you here for I hope it’s not to see our exhibits because if so then I must apologize, Mayor, you see…”

You hold up your hand. Okay. “Hi, Odwin. My name’s Leo. I was told you’re the one to talk to about archaeology, is that right?”

Odwin seems to deflate. “Ah. Well, I suppose I could help you out with that. Hold on, let me just go get my archaeology degree. Don’t worry, it won’t be hard.”

You frown. “Odwin, you seem a bit upset about something. Are you alright?”

Odwin sighs. “Well you see, Mayor, here’s the problem. When I decided to take over the old museum from my predecessor, the now retired Professor Miopya, I was delighted. After all, who wouldn’t be excited to head a museum for their former teacher, even if it was in a small town you’d never been to before. But you see, the Professor wasn’t exactly the most… discerning of fellows.” Odwin frowns. “You see, unfortunately, every piece of art, archaeology, history, essentially every piece of work in his entire museum was a forgery.” Odwin clenches his fist. “I do not know who it was that cheated my old teacher so, but I could not stand to see forgeries despoiling this museum. So I threw them all out!” He shakes his fist. “That’s right, every last one of them!” He sighs once again. “Perhaps not the best of decisions. I suppose I should have left at least one or two pieces, but no, our dearly beloved Whiteport museum now lays bare and empty, with naught but dust decorating its halls.”

You frown. “Well, that’s not very good. Why haven’t you tried getting more stuff for the museum?”
>>
Odwin shakes his head. “Unfortunately, I lack the skills necessary. All I have is a degree in theoretical archaeology, allowing me to identify bones, but leaving me with not even the slightest clue as to how to find them. Alas, although I will take just about anything for the museum at this point, anything which is even remotely fit to put on display, I cannot find even a single item.”

You frown. With your Earth Magic you can feel a great deal of strangely shaped objects underground around here, and you had thought that they were rocks, but now that you think about it…

“Hold on just a moment, Odwin,” you say, running back outside. Odwin merely waves sadly to you as you leave.

Once outside, it isn’t hard to locate one of these masses of strangely shaped objects right next to the Museum’s sign. A bit of digging with your shovel, helped along a bit by your Earth Magic, and you’ve loosed a few dust covered… what you think might be bones? You’re feeling pretty tired after all that digging and Earth Magic, but you quickly fill the hole back in and head inside.

“Hey Odwin,” you say, as you walk back in. “Will these do?”

Odwin looks up to see the objects you place on his desk, then suddenly sits up straight, his eyes wide. “This… this is… This is the skull of a Megacerops! Look how the dual protrusions on its snout serve as a precursor to the Rhinoceros’s single horn! Look at its teeth, flat and wide for the consumption of softer vegetation!” He looks up at you in surprise. “How in the world did you find this?”

You grin. “Just a hunch,” you say.
>>
Odwin closes his eyes, and when he opens them, he’s smiling. “Thank you, Mayor Leo. Thank you so so very much. You have a gift, Mayor, and I can only hope it takes you far.” He wipes his eyes. “If… if you find any more, would you consider donating them to the museum? I…” He looks down. “I won’t be able to pay you for them, but could you find it in your heart to help this fool out, please, could you donate them?”

You nod. “I’ll keep it in mind, Odwin.” He seems to be busy getting the bones cleaned up, so you decide to duck out for now.

It’s now quite late, and the sun is about to go completely beneath the horizon. You shade your eyes as the last rays of daylight disappear. Well then.

Hmm. Well, the Temple, as well as the Clothes Store, are the two major locations you haven’t visited yet, so you suppose you may as well check it out. It’s all the way on the other side of town, though, so you know you’re in for a bit of a walk.

As you head north, you consider how tired you are, much more so than you’d expect for the amount of digging you did. Was it the Earth Magic you used? You remember feeling pretty tired this morning as well, after you escaped from underground, until you had that cup of coffee. That’s probably it, you decide.

As you’re heading north, you notice the nice dirt path Velour has created. If working Earth Magic takes a lot of energy, then Velour must be an absolute monster to dig this big a path, especially on top of all her farm work. Or maybe she’s better at Earth Magic than you? You frown. There’s a lot about this stuff that you still don’t understand, and Velour really doesn’t seem like the best of teachers. She would probably make you try things until you either passed out or figured it out. Well, she’s all you’ve got.

As you near the slope up to the temple, you hear the squeal of tires from above you. If you recall correctly, there’s a road up there, next to the temple. You’re not sure what it is, but you get a feeling that you should probably stay hidden for now. Staying low to the ground, you climb up the slope and hide behind a tree.

On the road is a car, and in it are a group of scruffy looking teenagers with greasy haircuts. From the overconfidence in their walk, and the way they’re brandishing those baseball bats, one look tells you that they’re small fry, having recently joined a gang of some sort, and are probably out on their first mission. In other words, annoying to deal with, but ultimately not too big a threat, except in large numbers.

“Hey,” yells the panther in the front. He’s pretty obviously the leader, and unlike them, he holds a knife like someone who’s trained to use it. “Mika, you in there?”
>>
You turn to the temple, which seems mostly abandoned. Suddenly, one of the windows opens up, and a cat pokes their head out, wearing a white robe. The cat, who you presume is Mika, frowns at the panther. “Shove off, Merc. I’m busy.”

The panther frowns. “Mika, you know how this is going to go. Either you come out here, or we go in there. Non negotiable. Now which do you want?”

Mika sighs. “Fine. I’ll be out in just a sec. And don’t touch the statues.”

The window closes. You turn back to the group, and you notice them getting ready to attack. Hold on, are they planning on attacking Mika? You’ve got to stop them!

Just as a note, it's a Japanese style temple, since Animal Crossing is based on Japan.
>>
For now you decide to remain inconspicuous, but ready your spear in case of trouble. With your feet on the ground you can feel the group’s movements, allowing you to jump if the situation turns unruly.

After a few minutes, a figure walks out of the temple, wearing a black hoodie and very obviously not happy. After a few moments, you recognise the figure as Mike, from Flint’s group. “So,” says the hooded figure. “How’s it going, Merc?”

Merc flips the knife in his hands. Behind him, the others ready their weapons. “Come with us and nobody has to get hurt.”

Mike chuckles. “Let me tell you, Merc. Someone’s getting hurt alright. Now, are you going to make me wait all night!? Come on! GIVE ME YOUR BEST SHOT!”

The panther narrows his eyes. “Alright, you asked for it. ATTACK!” With that, the group before him rushes forwards, bats and pipes at the ready. You’re prepared to jump in, but before you can even move...

There a bright flash of light, and suddenly all of the attackers are on the floor, bruises decorating their bodies. “What,” says Mike, raising an eyebrow at Merc, “was that it? Come on, Merc. You know you’ll have to do better than that.”

Merc sighs. “It was their first mission, alright? I guess the boss just wanted to get this town out of the way early. They should count themselves lucky it was just one of you guys. Well, see you next time.”

Mike frowns. “Hold on, Merc. After that sorry display, I’m not letting you get away without a fight. Come on, it’s just me this time, so we can have a one on one.”

Merc turns. “You know what? Alright.” He flips his knife into the ready position as Mike readies his fists. “Let’s do this.”
>>
The fight isn’t long, but just by watching it, you can see the skill level of both sides. Mike is obviously pretty good, but just by looking you can see that Merc is better. He has more technique, and was probably trained, whereas Mike obviously learned from experience.

The thing that separates them, though, is Mike’s complete disregard for his own safety. He pushes immediately through Merc’s guard and attacks, never letting up, even when he would receive a cut or slice in return. You would have stopped the fight, except… somehow, every time Mike received an injury, there would be a flash of light and the injury would disappear, like he’d never been injured. Within seconds, the fight was decided, as Merc backed away, his face bloodied.

By this point the others had started to stir, so the group of them limped back to the car and took off, with Mike watching them go. After they left, Mike returned back into the temple, looking no worse for wear than he had when he’d come out.

Well then, that happened.

Well, you may as well go into the temple like you originally planned. Besides, while he might not have looked injured, Mike is still a resident of your town (you think), and as such if he’s badly injured in there, it’s up to you to help him out.

You head out from behind the tree and to the temple door. The temple itself is unlocked, and the prayer chamber inside is empty, but with your Earth Magic you can sense Mike in one of the back rooms. You head through the back door and into the temple proper, then around a few corners to the room that you can sense Mike inside of.

“Hello,” you call out. “Are you in there?”

“Oh, uh, yeah,” he calls back. “Hold on a sec, I’ll be right out.”

In just a few moments, the door opens again and out steps the cat from before, adorned in the traditional white robe and… red dress?

“Hold on,” you say, surprised. “You’re…”

“Oh, hey Mayor,” the cat before you says. “I’m Mika, we’ve met, at least briefly.” They raise an eyebrow as you say nothing. “You know, with Flint? I’m a friend of his?” You continue to try to understand. “Is… there something you need? I mean, I’m a shrine maiden here, so I can read your fortune, if you want.”

“You’re a girl?”

Mike, no, Mika, raises an eyebrow at you. “Yeah? I mean, sure don’t act that girly, but still…”

“People call you Mike!” you say.

“What?” Mika frowns. “No they don’t. Everyone calls me Mika. I mean, Flint pronounces it weirdly, but he still calls me Mika, I’m sure. Besides, everyone’s seen me working here in the temple.”

You think back to what Theo said last night. He said he thought Mike came from a different town, which must mean... “Oh yeah. Theo, at least, thinks Mike and Mika are different people. I’m not sure about everyone else.”

Mika thinks on that. “Oh. Well, that’s weird. So, do you need anything? Fortune told, incense to burn, healing an injury? I’ve kind of got places to be, so if you could make it quick, that would be great.”

You shake your head. “No, I’m good. I… wait, what was that last one?”

“Healing an injury?” Mika wiggles her fingers, producing bright sparks. “I’m a trained shrine maiden, so if you’re injured or anything I could help you out. Believe me, I'm pretty good at healing magic." She chuckles a bit. "So, what'll it be?"

“Hold on,” you say. “What was with those guys outside? Why were they here trying to beat you up?”

Mika groans. “So you saw that, huh? Okay so, apparently there’s some sort of continent wide gang war going on, and each of the factions is trying to claim as many towns as they can.”

You grimace. Ah, of course. You had heard about this, but you’d never been to the front lines yourself. From what you’d heard, though, it gets pretty bad.

Mika continues. “Basically, this one gang nearby calls themselves the Pack Rats, and they’re based out of Treeton, the next big city next door. They’ve got control over large parts of this area, but the one place they’ve never gotten to is here. Whiteport.” Mika looks proud. “That’s thanks to me, Flint, Charlie, and Est. Every time they try to force our town into their coalition, we stop them. They’ve tried all sorts of tactics, but we stopped them all. At this point, they just send little groups here every once in a while to remind us that they’re there.”

You nod. Theo said something like this, but you assumed they were stopping petty criminals, not huge crime organizations. So then… “You were using your healing magic to help you fight, then,” you say.

Mika scratches the back of her head. “Eh heh, yeah. Could you maybe not tell the Head Shrine Maiden? It’s not exactly an encouraged practice.”

You raise an eyebrow, but say nothing. “Where is everyone anyways? It’s like this place is empty.”

“Yeah,” Mika says, nodding. “It’s a small temple, so there’s just two shrine maidens, me and Serena. Serena’s away on her ‘Holy Journey’ a lot of the time though, so mostly it’s just me.”

You nod. What now? You can see that Mika is anxious to go somewhere, but you’re not sure if you still have questions.

You yawn. It’s getting pretty late, and you’re still pretty exhausted from that digging earlier. You’d better finish this up quickly.

“So what’s up with your magic anyways? I mean, is that a thing? You just have magic?”

Mika raises an eyebrow. “I guess wherever you’re from, they didn’t have a temple then.” She shrugs. “It is what it is. We shrine maidens are trained to use Light Magic to heal wounds, exorcise demons, chase off evil spirits, that sort of thing. Mostly just the first one, though.” She glances away. “Hey, I’m sorry, but I kind of have to be somewhere. Can this wait until tomorrow?”

You suppose it is pretty much time to go. “Sure. But before I go, could I have a stick of incense?”

Mika pulls a cardboard box out of her skirt and tosses it to you. “Here, take the whole pack. We’ve got loads.” With that she returns to the room she came out of, presumably to change back into her regular outfit.

Well, it’s certainly been an eventful day. You learned a great deal about the citizens of your town, and learned Earth Magic to boot. Its hard to believe it’s been just a day. Feels more like a week.

Back at your house, you remember that you still don’t have a bed, just a sleeping roll. Well, it’s probably for the best, given the current size of your house. You take one stick of incense and set it up, lighting it with the matches it comes with.

As you fall asleep, smoke begins to fill the room, bringing you into the realm of dreams.

[End of Session 4]

Once again, if you want, just post some questions and I'll probably answer them. Unless they're spoilers.

Next thread tomorrow probably, 4:30 PST. Follow my twitter to make sure you don't miss it.

You said this would have some Rune Factory mixed in.
When do we start exploring caves and fighting unimaginable horrors?
>>
>>41764466
The very first session (the train ride into town) had some zombies coming out of a cave while the train was stuck.

How do upgrades happen? Blacksmithing?

Can we make a deal with Tom and Odwin where a certain percentage of Museum Revenue goes to our debt as long as we provide fossils?
>>

Well, there's already a cave where you've fought zombies in (or near, I guess). The main difference is, unlike Rune Factory, the dungeons aren't right there, open to anybody. You actually have to deliberately go find them.

I'll give you a hint though. Two dungeons have actually been seen already, though one of them is just in passing.

Upgrades differ depending on the item. Weapons, as per Rune Factory, are upgradable via blacksmithing. Most tools, like Fishing Rods, you just have to buy a better version from a shop.

As per Animal Crossing, the museum doesn't actually collect revenue from citizens, but in any event the Museum is technically owned by the town. Any revenue, minus whatever Odwin is payed, goes to the town.

Which provides incentive to help get some works for the museum. The more prestigious the museum, the more cashflow we might get.

We need to build up a tourism industry
