You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you were in kind of a bind. You were attending a royal ball in Breton as a celebration of the start of a special tournament that could spell the difference between Tilea or Reikland gaining a new ally in this nearly started war.

Unforunately, as a lowly VT driver, political intrigue was not exactly your forte. You were half hoping the whole thing would end soon so that you could actually start doing what you were comfortable with, actual vertical tank battling.

What was NOT helping matters was the sudden appearance of Hess, your apparent Reiklander rival who at this very moment was clinging to one of your arms, much to Tarin's chagrin.

"Roy Powers, I was hoping that you would come!" Von Hess says with giddy anticipation.

>Um, it's nice to see you too.

We really need to ask why Hess likes us so much. Roy is pretty much your average tank ace, and the total amount of time spent interacting with each other is probably less than a day. What does she see in him?

Maybe she has an ulterior motive, sees some sort of potential, or maybe we just pique her interest at the moment?

Give both her and Tarin an arm. She could be a good ally and friend.

Looks like we have a very high chance of being challenged to a duel. Fortunately, we can try to reduce the number of duelists with our team distracting them. If worse comes to worse, we could try to get Rock and Alex to seduce people (they probably have done weirder things).

"Um, it's nice to see you, too." You say, taking a quick glance at Tarin, who wasn't even bothering masking her displeasure. Her eyes were narrowed into accusatory slits and her lips were bent into a pretty clear frown. "Look, you can tag along with us, I guess, but no touching."

"Oho, playing hard to get I see." Hess chuckles, taking a step back but still remaining uncomfortably close. "I suppose I did make my move a little too early..."

"Hey! Get out of here!" You see Axel charging in, interposing himself in between you and the Reiklander girl. "You trying to spy on us or something? Because that ain't going to work."

"Oh dear, it seems the Tileans are just as savage as the Colonel Gregor has warned me!" Hess backs away in mock fear and shock. "Whatever shall I do?"

"I'll show you savage-" Axel fumes.

You notice the altercation was starting to attract attention from the surrounding crowd. This might not be good...

You decide now is the time to intervene. You couldn't afford to make a scene, at least right now. You put a calming hand on Axel's shoulder and pull him back a bit.

"Come on, Axel. I know she's from an enemy nation and all, but we're on neutral ground here. At least TRY to act civil?" You say calmly.

"But-" Axel starts but is interrupted when he sees your calm grin. "F-fine. We'll do it your way."

"Oh my, I wasn't aware you were also in THAT kind of a relationship!" Hess giggles, covering her smirk with her mouth. "I will take my leave for now. Perhaps we shall meet inside later, ja?"

With that, Hess spins on her heed and heads to the hall, a very happy bounce in her step as her retinue swoops in around her, no doubt chastising her for approaching you. Looks like the Reiklanders also weren't totally comfortable with her flirting with you.

"What an odd girl." Tarin grumbles. "I find it a bit suspicious that she's so eager to get close to you."

"I know, right?" Axel shakes his head in confusion.

"Well, you never know until you ask." Parker says with a grin. "Perhaps you should check your pockets."

"What?" You blink as you follow Parker's suggestion, and find something that shouldn't be there. You pull a small folded note from your pocket. "How did this get in there?"

You get the sneaking suspicion that Parker wasn't always a tanker, but you feel that this isn't the really the time or place to ask about it.

"Well, what does it say?" You ask, trying to get a peek on the note.

"It says, 'Meet me on top of the North Wall, 10pm. Alone, please!'" Parker smiles. "Ah, it sounds like a covert meeting! Maybe between two star crossed lovers from warring nations?"

"I think you're being a bit too much of a romantic here." Bannon grunts as he steps in. "It's obviously a trap. What better way to sabotage our mission than kidnapping one of our members?"

"She doesn't strike me as the kind of girl that would stoop to that kind of deception." Rock finally gives his input. "But you know, this might be a good opportunity to get some juicy inside info on the Reik group."

"Oooooh, that's a good one, Rock!" Parker nods approvingly.

"S-s-spy on them?" Alfie gasps.

"No way. I'm not going to authorize something like that." Bannon frowns and looks at you. "You're not going near that girl again. You got that?"

You look to Tarin, who merely stays silent, though her grip on your hand tightens. She was always pretty bad at speaking her mind at times like these.

Most of the other Reiklanders don't seem to like what Hess is doing. Gregor was especially displeased by it, and it really doesn't seem like he's capable of faking that. Too stiff.

Hess is playing something that the others aren't privy to. Let's get in on it.

We're diplomats. Most diplomacy is conducted in off-the-record meetings. She's asking for an off-the-record meeting, and has shown good faith so far. We need to know what the unofficial Reikland position is, so that both sides are able to "put on the show" when the "real diplomacy" starts.

>>41760377

You don't say anything back to Tarin either, and instead give a reassuring squeeze of her hand to let her know that you got her message. Tarin's face still remains rock solid is it always is, but you can tell that she acknowledges your response. You then turn to Bannon and give him a hard stare.

"Sir, I think Rock's right. It's an opportunity to get some valuable intel." You say flatly. "Hess is going through great lengths to reach out to us, or at least me, so we at least should give her a chance."

Bannon glances at Rock, and then at Parker who nods. Parker's approval seems to clinch it, as he sighs and turns back to you.

"All right, fine. I'll authorize it. But I don't feel comfortable with you going alone. you should at least have somebody watch your back."

"I think it's better if I go alone." You say. "It wouldn't help to risk spooking her before we can get anything useful."

"Are you sure about that?" Tarin frowns. "We don't know-"

"Tarin, I'll be fine." You assure her. "And don't try following me secretly. I know when you try to do it."

"...fine." Tarin concedes.

"Well now, come on, we still got at least a couple of hours till the meet, so let's try to enjoy the party!" Rock says cheerfully, pushing you all forward towards the door. Up ahead, you see Lord Artois standing at the doorway.

"You lot certainly took your time." Artois sighs. "Come along."

You're quickly ushered in past a number of heavily armored guards, who give each and every guest a sharp, discerning look. However, they do nothing more than stare at you under their steel masks as you pass by.

"Don't mind them. They're mostly there just for show." Lord Artois tries to assure you.

"I'm sure." Alex gives a cautious glare at the guards.

The moment you enter the hall, you're almost blinded by the sheer opulence of what you see. The walls are lined with gilded gold ornaments, stone statues of beasts and massive murals and paintings depicting past battles and victories. The floors were ivory white tile, purer and brighter than the freshly fallen snow of the mountains. In the center of the hall, the dance floor was a single slab of dark stone, polished so thoroughly that it reflected everything above it with a perfect mirror sheen. You at firest nearly thought it was a fountain until you saw party guests actually walking on top of it.

And up above was a massive glass dome, decorated with the soft glow and the stars and moon hanging in the sky.

"Must be good to be a king." Rock whistles.

"How the hell do they afford all this?" Axel gasps.

"So pretty..." Alfie mumbles, eyes wide with awe.

"Hey, what's with that line?" You ask, pointing to a large queue of nobles and knights lining up under a large flight of stairs.

"Well wishers coming to pay their respects to the King." Artois explains, pointing to the top of the stairs, where you see a massive throne decorated with gold swords, lances, and shields. It was easily three times the height as the man sitting in it, adorned in royal robes and ceremonial armor with a large, jewel encrusted crown sitting atop his head.

"Traditionally, paying our respects is the first task to undertake upon arrival." Artois explains, but gives a sly grin. "But in my many years, I've learned to just wait until the line thins out. Feel free to take advantage of the refreshments or the dance floor while you wait."

"All right! Time to see what royal food tastes like!" Axel grins.

"Heh, maybe I should find a dance partner." Rock muses and nudges your shoulder. "What are you gonna do, Kid?"

Wanted to mention that Merc is doing a decent job with the details. Even though the players don't usually pay too much attention to the scenery, Merc has some nice descriptions.

Typo notwithstanding, of course. Keep up the good work, Merc! That extra bit of spit and polish is why this anon stays up until 0400 for your threads.

"Me? I am going to get some food." You say. "I haven't eaten anything at all."

"I will have Willem show you to the feasting tables." Artois nods to his squire, who immediately snaps to attention.

"At once, my Lord!" Willem says obediently as he steps forward. "For those of you that desire to feast, please follow me!"

You see that in addition to you and Tarin, Axel and Alfie split off to join you while the others seem to start meandering around to mingle with party guests. Bannon seems to stick with Artois, talking with him about a subject you can't really hear. Parker looks to be stalking the servant girls, furiously scribbling notes with a very odd and concerning look on her face. You guess that even the professional and well trained Parker had her own quirks.

Meanwhile, Rock seemed to be hitting it off with a few of the servant girls, wooing them with his natural charm. Alex seemed content to hang back to keep an eye on Rock's escapades, though you could tell Rock's partner was getting a bit uncomfortable with the curious glances of guests of both sexes.

Finally, Willem brings you to the "feasting table", and you could immediately tell they were not exaggerating anything when they said it was a feast. Food of all kinds lined a massive oak table, ranging from meats, exotic fruits, and pastries of all kinds.

"The king gathers the finest cooks and ingredients from all across the continent." Willem says with a bit of pride. "Anything you appetite desires, you will find here."

"I can see Axel has already gotten started." Tarin nods to your fellow tanker, who was cramming as much food as physically possible on his plate.

"Yep, one of everything as always." You chuckle.

You try to get a well balanced meal. Some slices of turkey, a cut of beef or two, some salad, one of those adorable little pink cupcakes that probably had enough sugar packed into it to power a small child for weeks. Tarin naturally let her mountain roots show by stocking up on as much meats and sweets as possible. It was kind of disturbing to see steaks and sausage links sharing space with cakes and desserts, and even moreso when they started rubbing against each other.

The "will they or won't they get together" dynamic is a very strong one. Let's not throw that away too soon. Roy and Tarin are childhood friends who now depend on each other every time they go into battle together. Roy does NOT want to hurt Tarin emotionally, especially since as the VT's commander he is responsible for the mental health of his crew. Any kind of relationship between them has to be very carefully handled, which only adds to the suspense of "will they or won't they". Precisely because this is such a delicate balance is why I think it is most worthy of being pursued. Maintaining a healthy relationship with Tarin is vital to Roy's survival and effectiveness in combat.

It's an incredibly delicate balance, but if it works out, Roy and Tarin could become a "battle couple". For those who don't know what that is:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BattleCouple

However, given Merc's comments about Tarin being secretly lewd, I also have to admit that I am rather attracted by an even more complex option. The greatest challenge for Roy Powers would not be maintaining a healthy relationship with his childhood friend, but maintaining a healthy web of respect and affection between multiple battle-hardened VT-trained women who are constantly vying for his affections!

You honestly had to give the cooks credit, those guys knew what they were doing. Somehow, the turkey wasn't dry at all and was full of flavor. The steak practically melted in your mouth and the desserts were sweet enough to put your whole body on edge, but not overly sweet to make your eyes water.

You turn back to Tarin and notice she's filling up a second plate.

"Really, Tarin?" You raise an eyebrow.

Tarin counters your eyebrow raise with her own.

"You're really going to pass up free food of this quality?" She asks simply.

"Point." You say as you grab some roast beef and sprinkle horseradish on it. REAL horseradish, not that creamy goop most restaurants pretended was the real deal.

However, as big of an eater Tarin could have been Axel always had her beat. You were pretty sure he was on his fourth plate. Normally, you'd chastise him over table manners, but at this point, it was miracle enough that he was still using plates and utensils at all.

Meanwhile, you see Alfie largely not touching anything.

"You're not hungry, Alfie?" You ask, wiping some sauce off the corner of your mouth.

"W-what?" Alfie suddenly snaps out of her trance and gives you a nervous look. "O-oh, no, I'm not really that hungry..."

You do note, thought, that she keeps stealing glances at the dance floor, or more specifically, the couples that were dancing on it.

Sleeper agents are no joke, man! That indoctrination!

Well, you can get an aphrodisiac effect from certain drugs just based on your reaction to them, or how it alters your perception, but for the most part, it's either really nasty, or not legal.

Basically, don't use them. Highly addictive substances for a wildly varying set of results.

You and Alfie walk together to the dance floor, while you look for a good opening to slip in. Thankfully, at this early hour in the ball, there's not a lot of dancers on the floor, so its easy to find a large gap where you could maintain a good measure of distance away from the other dancers, not only because you weren't too confident in your own dancing skills, but also to lessen any anxiety Alfie might feel.

"You know the steps, right?" You ask her.

"Y-yes." Alfie nods. "The basics."

And just like that, the two of you go into synch, matching your steps with the music as you do a slow dance around the floor. And for one of the few times you've seen it, Alfie seems to be really enjoying herself. There's a large smile on her face and she's seem to have completely forgotten all of her worries.

However, all is not well. One thing Parker and Tarin had taught you beforehand as prep for the ball was to be able to survey your surroundings while you danced. You do a slow 360 degree spin and scan the crowd around you. Unfortunately, you see a pack of about four young noble kids giving you the stink eye.

To be frank, a lack of narrative cohesion. We went through all this trouble to pick out a dress just for Tarin, on top of all the development her and Roy's relationship got before then. After all that, we just brush our chance to dance with her aside? I just can't see Roy picking Alfie as a dance partner when there were so many other options. He never really showed much interest in her before.

I just want some consistency, is all.

You decide to just ignore them. After all, all they're doing is just giving you the stink eye. Unleashing Axel, or god forbid, Tarin, on them would be a bit overkill. You focus on not stepping on Alfie's feet, and manage to get to the end of the song. All of the dancing partners on the floor then separate, with the men bowing and the women curtsying, and you and Alfie follow suit.

"Thank so much, Roy." Alfie says with a smile. "It really means a lot dancing with me like that."

"All I do is serve, milady." You say jokingly.

"A-anyways, I better make sure Axel doesn't choke himself again." Alfie kisses you on the cheek and trots off. "Good luck!"

You glance up at the clock. It was 9 o'clock, so you still had plenty of time before having to meet Hess. You also notice the line up to the throne has grown considerably shorter.

"So where to now?" Tarin asks as she walks up to your side.

You walk up to Tarin and offer her your hand with a smile.

"Been waiting long for you turn?" You grin.

"Of course not." Tarin says unconvincingly. :Just keeping an eye out for you."

"Sure thing." You take Tarin's hand. "We still got time, so how about a quick dance in the meantime? Besides, I think we're under good care, here."

You motion to the crowd around you, where your platoon seems to have taken up positions at all major points in the hall. Artois and Bannon were hanging out at the stairs under the throne, at the head of the hall. Alex was just hanging out near the entrances, while Axel and Alfie were at the feast table at the rear. Rock was across from the entrances, still hitting it up with the lower class ladies, while Parker was actually nowhere to be found. With that sort of spacing, there was nothing that could escape your team's eye.

"I suppose you already have an eye on the Reik party?" You ask Tarin.

"They're in line to pay respects to the King." Tarin points up the stairs, and sure enough, you see Gregor in his signature black uniform standing on the stairs, waiting patient for his turn. Behind him was Hess, who was fidgeting like an impatient child.

"Heh." You grin.

"What's wrong?" Tarin blinks.

"Nah, it's nothing." You shake your head and gently pull Tarin to the dance floor. "Come on, the music is going to start."

And then band starts up the music again. However, instead of the slow music they were playing before, the band apparently decided to spice things up with a tango.

"Hmmm, a tango? That's a bit challenging." Tarin frowns.

"Oh come on, it's not THAT complex." You laugh.

"Brave words, considering our only experience is watching your mom and dad doing it." Tarin points out.

"Hey, we're both quick studies." You smiles. "Come on, we're already committed!"

The next few minutes are kind of a blur of motion and fast music. Obviously, neither of you were even close to being the most proficient dancers, but you make do, trying to match everything from memory and from copying the other couples around you.

However, unlike the dance with Alfie, you feel a lot more anxious, and your heart races, especially every time Tarin leans into you, pressing her body against yours. Maybe it was because Tarin was wearing relatively less clothes than Alfie, so you could certainly feel the contours of her body more. Or maybe it was because it was Tarin doing it. She then curls her leg around you waist, and you feel something hard between her legs.

"Really, Tarin?" You groan. "You snuck a knife under your dress?"

"You didn't?" Tarin asked with genuine surprise. "I thought-"

"MOVING ON." You say quickly as the frantic tempo of the finale passes and the dance ends.

"Well, that was nice." Tarin says, her lips curling into a faint smile. "We should do it again sometime."

"We should." You nod. You glance back at the clock.

"Come on, let's go pay the King a visit." You say, gently leading Tarin off of the dance floor and towards the throne.

"All right." Tarin nods obediently.

The two of you quietly make your way to the front of the hall, weaving in between all the various guests. As you reach the foot of the stairs, you see Lord Artois hitting it off with a group of nobles, while Bannon stands there puffing his chest out as much as he can. You can't hear what Artois is saying, but you're sure he's playing up Bannon's and the platoon's accomplishments. And judging from the interested expressions his audience was showing, it was totally working.

You decide not to interrupt him and continue up the stairs. This late into the ball, the line is practically gone as everybody has already gotten their greetings out of the way. Fortunately, the Reiklander party is gone by the time you get there, saving some potential tension.

The King himself appears to be a tired, old man now that you've gotten a closer look at him. You can tell he was once a powerful and confident man, but age has slowly chipped away at his appearance and his will. He sits on his throne, rather glumly looking on at the festivities as he's flanked by a pair of royal guards. However, some light of life seems to spark up in him when he sees you and Tarin arrive.

"Ah, our Tilean guests!" The King smiles and nearly moves to stand up from his throne, but quickly remembers his station and sits back down. "I have heard you and your comrades fought bravely and valorously on the field of combat! How your mere four steeds destroyed hundreds of enemies! Is this true?!"

Jeez, he's almost like a kid in a candy store.

"Oh no, it wasn't THAT epic." You say modestly. "I mean, it's not like we were the only ones fighting that day."

"Ah yes, I understand." The King smiles warmly. "Such as a King is nothing without the kingdom he leads, a knight is nothing without the support of his squires, and a soldier is nothing without his comrades at his side."

"Yeah, something like that." You nod in agreement.

"It seems like you're not enjoying the party." Tarin says bluntly. You see the two royal guards flinch as if she had thrown a physical punch at him.

"Tarin!" You hiss.

However, the King simply gives a hearty laugh, which causes his guards to back off in confusion.

"Ha! It's been a while since somebody has spoken to me like that!" The King wipes a tear from his eye. "That's the problem when you're a warrior king. Everything quickly becomes rather dull when you're not actually fighting."

"You're not happy being the king?" You frown.

"Well, there are perks and drawbacks." The King sighs. "But there are times the king is just as much a prisoner as the peasants that serve him."

You are about to ask him to explain further when you're interrupted by a loud ringing sound as the clock strikes ten.

"Ah, well, I suppose you have better things to do than to hear an old man reminisce about his past." The King leans back in his throne. "You two may take your leave."

Well, it looked like there was only one thing left to do now. You glance to the hall's northern exit, which would lead to the meeting point with Hess.

"Good luck." Tarin whispers to you.

"Yeah, I hope I don't need it." You sigh.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget Ace Combat on Friday, as well!
