The charging demons let out high-pitched screeches, likely disturbing most of your neighbors as they come barreling towards you down the hall. The creatures don't seem very strong, being rather scrawny in appearance, with rat-like faces and hands clutching swords.

Kasai quickly dispatches one of the demons with a torrent of flame, the creature falling back and letting out an ear-piercing scream as its comrades leap over it at your demon friend. Before the first one can reach Kasai, you punch it in the throat, knocking it onto its back and causing it to trip up one of the other demons. Kasai scorches the two on the floor, leaving you with three enemies.

Apparently a bit smarter than you might have thought, the remaining demons seem to have learned from the mistakes of their comrades, and halt in their charge, fanning out and approaching cautiously.

Kasai shoots a torrent of flame at one, who displays impressive reflexes and ducks out of the way.

You can feel that Balor has reached the building, and is approaching the stairs.

Prepare a two fire balls the instant Bruce comes back toss them at the enemy and have Kasai make a small explosion from them for a distortion effect. Nothing to serious that would cause a fire just enough to make them have to shut their eyes and back away for a few seconds.

You keep your guard up, ready to fight off any attacks as the remaining demons slowly inch closer.

Bruce comes running out of his apartment, followed by his parents, who at first seem somewhat irritated at their son for dragging them out of their apartment for this supposed nonsense. But the instant they get a look at you and the creature's you're fighting, they realize something is very wrong.

You tell everyone to run, and take off down the hall, the three remaining creatures following close behind. Kasai throws small jets of flame over her shoulder, keeping them from running you down. You sense Balor getting closer by the second, and rush even faster down the hall towards the stairs.

As your group begins to run down the steps, one of the creatures tackled Kasai from behind. The two roll down a flight of steps, with Kasai landing painfully on her face beneath the creature, who raises its sword to stab her between the shoulders.

You take aim at the creature atop Kasai, holding your pointer finger towards it and channeling your Spirit Energy into the tip.

With the creature right on top of your friend, you have to take care to aim well, and focus the blast in order to make it smaller and more precise.

"SPIRIT GUN!" you shout, firing a thin beam of light from your fingertip at the creature atop Kasai.

Your aim is true, and your blast hits the demon in the head, knocking it right off of Kasai and sending it sprawling onto the ground. It goes still, and Kasai quickly sits up.

"Look out!" Bruce shouts.

You spin, and hiss in pain as a sword leaves a shallow cut in your arm. You punch the demon away, but its friend leaps at you. Kasai blasts it out of the air, and it shrieks as it falls to the ground, writhing in agony.

The last demon begins to slowly back away, only to be set ablaze by Kasai as its comrade was.

You take a moment to check your arm. You're bleeding, but you don't seem to be seriously hurt. Your Spirit Energy might have protected you from the worst of it.

You have enough energy left for one more Spirit Gun, you'd better make it count.

You can feel Balor approaching. He's up the stairs, slowly coming down the hallway you and the others just came from.

You run as fast as you can, the others staying close as you make it down the stairs. You try to feel Spiritual Energy around you as you rush. Balor's energy is the most noticeable, but you can sense dozens of other demons close by, and a fairly large power somewhere just outside of the complex.

You and the others keep running, making it through the doors to the building before and seeing a trio of demons rushing towards you. These three look just like the ones that attacked you in the stairwell, though they appear to be unarmed.

You and Kasai are able to fight them off easily enough, but you can feel that Balor has nearly reached the stairs. You start running, then fall to the ground as something hits you from behind.

You feel a weight on your back, and hear a cackling above you.

"Get off of him!" Bruce shouts, rushing towards you and pulling back his fist.

He throws a punch, and the weight leaves your back as your assailant lands beside you with a thud. You push yourself up and stomp on the creature's throat, looking to see another two creatures rushing towards you.

Kasai keeps them back with a torrent of flame, but they quickly spread out and begin to circle around you and your friends.

Balor has reached the stairs, and is beginning to descend.

You rush towards the nearest demon, who jumps at you, howling with laughter at what it presumes will be an easy kill.

You sidestep the creature as it lands, and kick it in the back of the head as hard as you can, sending it to the ground where it goes limp. This display distracts the other creature long enough for Kasai to catch it off-guard and hit it with a jet of flame.

You start running again, feeling that Balor nearly down the stairs. You and the others make it outside of the apartment complex, and you look over your shoulder to see two large, armored demons running after you.

Before you can decide what to do, something shoots right past your face and strikes a demon between the eyes. The creature falls back to the ground and goes still. Someone lands behind you and charges at the remaining demon, drawing a dagger and slicing it across the creature's throat.

As the second demon falls, the man picks up the dagger he threw at the first, then turns and rushes towards your group. He looks about a year older than you, with short black hair, a brown jacket, and a pair of dark sunglasses covering his eyes.

You're pretty sure the cavalry has arrived.

"So, you're the guy Koe's so worried about losing?" he asks, catching up with your group. "Nice outfit, but if you're having so much trouble with weaklings like that, I don't see what Koe's so impressed with."

He suddenly pauses, turning back towards the apartment building. Looking back, you see a large figure emerge and slowly begin to approach you.

You shout for the others to run for it while you lead Balor elsewhere.

"Not a chance," the newcomer tells you. "Koe told me to keep you from getting yourself killed. If Balor catches you, you're dead. I'll go with you and make sure you don't bite it for now."

"Hold on," your father protests. "I'm not going to leave my son to be chased down by some monster."

The newcomer laughs. "Hey, if you want to try and fight Balor, go ahead, but you're going to die, and will probably just get your son killed, too."

"Come on," Bruce tells your father, grabbing him by the arm and taking off.

The others follow, until only you and the newcomer remain.

Balor is getting closer, so the two of you take off as fast as you can. Over the next few blocks, you're ambushed by three separate groups of demons, which you and your new ally easily dispatch (though he does most of the work). Balor continues to follow, not speeding up or slowing down, but very slowly gaining ground on the two of you.

You need to find a way to lose him.

Can we charge up a fire ball while running or do we have to stay immobile?

Also. We know this area better than Balor, we should take advantage of that.

Any holy places near by? A church, a mosque, a bhuddist temple? Anything that can weaken a demon by just being on the land?
>>
>>41777442
>A. Head for a nearby building and try to shake him
>>

Think we can, but might take a bit longer since we aren't standing still
>>
>>41777469
You need to shake him somehow, and turn towards a nearby building. You know this area well enough to know what to look for, and head for a nearby department store.

As you rush towards the building, you focus fire into your hands, manipulating it with your spirit energy until you have two fire balls. You turn and throw them towards Balor, not waiting to see the results as you and your new companion run inside.

With your current attire, people give you some space, allowing you to rush across the store and towards the back. There's an emergency exit which you and your companion run right through, coming to a different street. You can feel Balor still following, and are beginning to feel just a little bit tired.

"So, any ideas..uh...." you say to your companion as the two of you rush down the street. "I didn't get your name."

"My name is Aalgan," he tells you, flinching at the sound of something crashing in the distance. "And all we can do is run!"

"Enough," you hear Koe say.

Judging by Aalgan's face, he's heard it too. He stops in his tracks and looks around. And, looking back, you see that Balor has done the same.

You feel a chill run down your spine, your hair standing up, your blood running cold, and your legs shaking. The sky seems to dim, and the temperature around you plummets.

Everything goes silent, and then you hear footsteps. They echo all around you, increasing their volume step by step. You see nobody, but everything looks darker and darker, until your vision is engulfed by blackness.

Slowly, your sight returns, and you look over your shoulder to see someone standing behind you, positioning himself between you and Balor.

He wears a black suit, and has a very strange looking head, made up of what appears to be a goat skull, complete with curled horns.

"You..." Balor's voice rumbles.

"Cease this chase immediately, Balor," Koe demands sternly. "Persist on your current path and you will find yourself running headlong into oblivion."

Balor's gaze shifts towards you, his eye beginning to glow red.

"I SAID ENOUGH!" Koe yells, holding out his hand towards Balor.

The massive demon is thrown off of his feet and sent flying backwards, crashing to the ground hard.

"Think carefully before you try that again," Koe warns as Balor picks himself up.

"My Lord will hear of this," Balor promises.

"I know," Koe replies.

"I will have that boy!" Balor vows. "And my Lord will have your head."

"Perhaps," Koe replies. "But not today."

Balor growls. "No. Not today."

The massive demon turns and begins to walk away.

He looks at you. "And, before you ask, yes, your family and friends are safe, though they had a few close calls during their escape. Balor's remaining demons have fled the town, and Balor himself is departing."

"He's still gonna come after our friend here," Aalgan points out.

"Of course, but my interference has given him pause," Koe replies. "He will be far more cautious before making another move to take the Detective's life. And, when he does, he will not act so overtly."

"When that time comes, you will hopefully be powerful enough to face him," Koe answers.

"Well, can you give me any sort of training to make me strong enough to face him when he comes back?" you ask. "And how the hell did he even know I betrayed him?"

"It seems his eye gives him clairvoyance, allowing him to view events occurring great distances away," Koe answers. "As far as training, that is something you and I need to discuss, but not here. I must leave at once. My presence here is sure to have drawn attention, and I don't wish to engage those who will come in battle."

Your vision is engulfed by blackness once more, and you find yourself in the room from your dreams, accompanied by Aalgan and Koe.

Koe turns and ascends to his throne, taking a seat and gesturing for you to do the same.

"So, can we talk about training?" you ask, taking a seat.

"Of course," Koe answers. "Now, you asked me for personal training, something that I am reluctant to give you."

"Don't worry, he says that to everybody," Aalgan tells you.

"With good reason," Koe explains. "My training regiment is a tad extreme, and quite intensive. There's a very real chance you could be killed, or maimed. No matter how you do, you will not make it through my training without a great deal of suffering, and I do not wish for any animosity to form between us due to me making you suffer through training."

He leans back, feeding himself a grape. "I want our partnership to last, my friend. To that end, I wish for it to be one based on mutual respect and trust. I do not wish for negative feelings to brew between us, and cause potential division at a time when unity is necessary. I can train you, and, if you survive, you will grow much stronger. In fact, when six months have passed, you may stand a small chance of defeating Balor. But you must prepare for suffering, and prepare to put your life on the line on a daily basis."

"Isn't that kind of his job?" Aalgan asks.

"True, but this is for the pure sake of strength," Koe answers. "In the past, our friend here has put himself in harm's way to protect others. Those are very different motivations and situations. I want to make sure he understands what he's getting into before I agree to train him."

"I want you to train me," you tell Koe. "I'll do whatever it takes."

Koe gives a resigned sigh. "Very well. If nothing else, I admire your resolve."

"Can my friend Bruce be trained by Aalgan while I'm trained by you?" you ask.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Aalgan says, turning on you. "When did I volunteer for babysitting?"

"I believe there is merit to our friend's suggestion," Koe tells him. "Bruce's Spiritual prowess is sorely lacking at the moment, but he does possess some potential. Our friend has brought small glimmers of it out during training. With your skill, I believe you can make him a worthy fighter."

"I think it's a waste of time," Aalgan protests.

"We need every potential weapon we can scrounge together," Koe tells him. "Bruce has the potential to aid us in the coming fight, if there is even the slightest bit of advantage to be gained from training him, I do not want to see it wasted. You will train Bruce, and within in six months, I want you to help him become about as strong as our friend is right now."

"Fine," Aalgan answers. "I'll do it."

"As for you," Koe continues, looking towards you. "Our training will commence soon. But, for now, rest. You've just survived a harrowing experience, and have done quite well, in my opinion. So, recover, settle any affairs with your loved ones, and prepare to give everything."

"What? You're leaving?" Bruce asks.

You nod, sighing as you look at your father. "I'm sorry I kept this from you, I thought it would keep you safe, but I guess what you don't know can kill you."

"I-I understand why you didn't tell me," your dad replies. "I just...now I need to know what's happening."

You give your father the long and short of what's been happening, and see him growing more confused and frightened by the second. Once that's done, you look towards Bruce.

"Bruce...and this goes double for your folks, I'm sorry I got you involved in this," you say sincerely. "But I can't get you out now. Bruce, you're a part of this now, so, while I'm gone, you're going to be trained by someone else."

"Who?" he asks.

"That would be me," Aalgan answers, stepping out of the bushes. "And believe me, I'm not thrilled about it, either."

Things have changed. Your father knows about your double life, and your friend now has to endure training to make sure associating with you doesn't get him killed. And, to top things off, you're leaving home to go train for more than five months with a demon lord who has promised that it will be a living hell.

You can handle it, though.

Right?

No, unless Kara is suddenly doing suicide runs across the globe while simultaneously fighting demons and practicing psychic powers without stopping even long enough to get a drink at a water fountain, I don't see it being reasonable that she is going to get that strong.
