The city is noisy, but you are shielded from the press of people and animals in your litter by wood and silk curtains, like a finely made barrier keeping out anything that could harm or disturb your peaceful journey to your destination.

You can't help but see this as a metaphor for your entire life.

Kaifeng stretches around you, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, always just out of reach by way of laquered wood and silken curtains.

You sigh, closing your eyes.
It's been close to a year since your father, Yuan Shilong, the famed Qilin of Chengdu, died in combat as the Imperial military devestated the city.

One of the guards outside the palanquin raps on the wooden grade covers by silk, and you open it to speak to him.

"Lady Qiyue, we're almost at the Eagle Clan compound," the guard says.
He's a strong-featured man called Yen Boli, one of your father's most loyal retainers before he passed.
He's been guarding you since you evacuated the city with his retinue of men, and also since you settled in Kaifeng six months ago.

But there's limits to what he and his men can do by themselves.

"How close are we?" you ask, trying to keep concern out of your voice.
You know the peace inside the palanquin is a a carefully-made illusion; nothing is safe in life, as your dear father so eloquently proved by dying despite his power and station.

"Not far. In less then an hour we'll be there," he says with a firm and confident nod.

"Good. Do not consider ourselves safe until we are within the walls of Golden Eagle Tower," you order and close the wooden slat again, sighing, putting one closed hand to chest and closing your eyes.

>"Remember, Qi'er; you may not have martial skills but your mind is sharper then any blade. Allies and alliances can help you and aid you in the darkest of times. That's more powerful then any Kung fu I could teach you."

Your father always seemed full of so much wisdom, but he died anyway.
You don't even know WHY, really.
Now it's all you can do to hold what little of the Yuan Clan remaining as the jianghu descends upon it like vultures.

You feel the litter come to a sudden halt.
You open the wooden window and peer you into the dirty street.

Boli stands with his hands on his saber, facing forward, and you see the palanquin-bearers have dropped you and are tending their muscular shoulders, drawing their own blades.

A group of armed thugs led by a man with two single-edged straight knives thrust into his belt stand in the street. You count maybe ten.

That means there's more nearby; you have 12 with you if you include the litter-bearers, and these men would never attack unless they outnumbered you.

>WDYD?

>"Who are you? What do you want?" [Inquire]

>"Boli, move on please." [Move Past]

Also, just noticed while reading the last few threads before the hiatus that there's been a time skip again. It was just two months since the incident at Chengdu last time we had Sky's perspective, now it's been nearly a year. I wonder what shenanigans he got up to with the Bao Clan in the past nine months or so?
>>
>>41828279
Why are we asking them what they want? That's putting them in control of the conversation, and the situation. We need to dictate the conversation, and make it short, so they don't get it into their heads to actually do anything more than look imposing.

>"If you're looking for coin, know that we've not enough to recoup the wounds you will suffer in taking it."
>"Boli, move on please." [Move Past]

Unless, of course, anyone here is confident enough in politeness-fu to turn them to our side?
>>
>>41828561
I think it's more that we're worried about inciting an immediate attack if we try to just move past them. Also, being in a palanquin, asking our men to carry us forward would prevent them from being able to fight properly themselves. It wouldn't end well. This way we at least have a bit of a shot.

"Why do you bar our passage, strangers?" you call out, though you have a fairly good idea of why honestly.
Boli looks over at you when you speak, clearly alarmed that you'd bother to speak with them at all.
He's a little overprotective.

"Lady Yuan!" the main with the knives says. His muscles are heavy-looking but his build is lean anyway, like a sleek arboreal jungle cat or a big wolf.
He carries himself casually and non-threateningly despite his rough beard and cruel eyes, with an easy wolffish grin taking attention away from the blades on his belt.

>You don't fool me at all, Sir,
you think to yourself.

"Speaking," you confirm.

"My master came to you three days ago with a business proposition and a proposal of alliance. Do you remember?" he calls our, casually scratching the thin beard outlining just his jaw.

The Syndicate.

"I remember. Though I do not recall you being there; I suppose you had other things to do at the time?" you say with a cruel smirk on your words.

If he wasn't at the meeting then he wasn't important enough to be there.
Meaning he's a thug, at best.

He grins wider, but you can see his eyes light up the way a violent man's do when he's angry and he's been given an excuse to do what he does best.

"I guess my talents lie in other areas. Anyway, my boss would really like your response," he explains, hooming his thumbs onto his belt near the knives, a subtle non-verbal threat.

"And he shall in a few days," you confirm. "Currently you are delaying a meeting with another person of import."

"Oh yeah? Who's that, Lady Yuan?" he asks, his grin saying but his eyes narrowing again.

"The Eagle Clan, of course. This IS their territory we are in, is it not?" you point out, the smirk still in your words.

That should shut him down; the Syndicate is powerful in Kaifeng, but so is the Eagle Clan. They wouldn't cross that line lightly.

"Well, if it's all the same to you, my boss would really like it if he heard from you sooner rather then later."
>>
>>41828605
That was why I put the first bit in.

I doubt 'a bit of a shot' will be sufficient here. We literally just had a Paternal Wisdom Flashback Quote basically stating that 'you suck at fighting, so use your head and don't make enemies'.

I'm all for turning these guys into allies, but I'm worried that we might not be competent enough, at least out-of-character, to guide the conversation into our favor.
>>
>>41828676
>Our mind is sharper than any blade
>Immediately encounter a man who is a Wolf and carries around two blades

We show them who is alpha and who is the omega.
>>
"I'm afraid that's not possible at the moment. You shall hear from me when I have had time to consider your offer," you confirm.

He sighs, but that wolffish grin returns.
"That's okay. I was kinda hoping you'd say that anyway, you know?" he says, raising his hands.

It must have been a signal of some sort, because an arrow comes flying out of nowhere to bury itself right into the throat of one of your men!

Your men react in shock as your eyes widen, and draw weapons, readying to attack the thugs!

"Just in case anyone has any funny ideas, make sure she's unharmed once you get her out of there. I will literally skin you alive," the knife-man says casually as he draws his blades.

You realize you miscalculated; you hadn't suspected his brazen or desperate or whatever the Syndicate would be to use such open violence so deep in Eagle Clan territory!

You draw you short knife, wishing your father had taught you more then just basic Lightfoot skills and self-defense as tha skirmish rages around you, more thugs bleeding out of the alleys!

One approaches your palanquin from the left, slicing down a guard with a vicious cut to his throat, and another slips past an already-engaged guard to your right, and in front of you across the street a final thug pulls out a flying spear attached to a rope and tosses it at the head of your carriage directly!

Everything happens in slow motion next as the thug casts the flying spear with full intent of piercing the palanquin and tearing it's front off!
>>
>>41828695
I think you forgot your name.
>>
Everything seems to happens in slow motion.

Say it with me now:
At first, there is a sound.
Like distant thunder.

http://youtu.be/QzeKtRysiDY

Then humanoid figure in a ragged brown cloak with frayed edges hiding his whole body except for is head blurs across the ground like a dusty tornado, kicking up loose cobblestones and dirt as he moves past with speed that seems IMPOSSIBLE to you.

He blurs up onto your left side, launching a kick at the man reaching for the carriage door that catches him by the side of the head and sends him flying away into the street!

Without pausing he uses the momentum of the kick to fly up, OVER the palanquin and land on the opposite side of your conveyance, landing a kick with his right that equally sends the man on that side flying away, kicking off him to land just in front of the litter and CATCHING the rope-dart in mid-flight like it was a tossed acorn!

He lands, dust still swirling around his feet, his right hand

"Sorry. Am I something?" the figures says without turning around, his tied-back hair swirling in the wind he seemed to kick up by his very presence.

In the air, somewhere far behind you you think you can hear something like an eagle, but much, MUCH louder.

"Who the fuck are YOU supposed to be?" Wolf-smile says, his expression clearly completely confused as this new arrivals appearance puts a pause on the fight.

A question you'd like answered yourself.

Holy fucking dickshit, you're back!

Good to see you, WS.
>>
>YOU ARE NOW PLAYING SKY

You stand in the swirling dust of your own enterance, right hand clasped rightly around the brief haft of the rope spear, holding it with one arm even as he tries to pull it back.

It was a BITCH catching up to this thing, and even harder picking out the right one (all litters look exactly the same to you), but you're looked at the Yuan Clan symbol on the palanquin and saw the guys attacking it and figured you had a fifty chance of this being the right one.

"Sorry. Am I interrupting something?" you ask with a mild smirk on your face.

"Who the fuck are you supposed to be?" he asks, clearly confused by your sudden arrival.

Weird. He's not scared or alarmed, just a little lost as to what's going on.
You'd think this guy had never seen a dramatic rescue before or something.

"Oh wow, is THAT a question with a crazy answer or what?" you say, laughing a bit. "Call me an asshole, but I think it's kinda funny how badly I'm going to beat all of your asses and you don't even know who or why?"

"Huh? I don't understand," the knife-guy admits, clearly confused by all this

"I know, that's what I'm saying. Seriously, try to keep up just a little here, alright?"

"Ugh, whatever," he says tiredly, shaking his head and nodding in your direction. "Just kill this guy too. He looks tougher then her guards at least."

One of the men decided to take that cue to swing a hatchet your way, and you lightly glide back into a spinning left kick to his jaw, knocking him off his feet?

"Not big on banter?" you say as you leap backwards to the litter, ducking under a saber slash aimed at your neck and landing a right hook on the guy's gut, then planting a left into his liver and a right cross into his jaw before spinning into a leap as another thrusts a spear at you, planting your left foot in mid-air on the haft of the spear-thrust and letting gravity pin it to the ground as you spin into a hooking right kick that hits his neck and spends him sprawling.
"That's indicative of an unimaginative mind, you know. If you don't exercise your mind AND your body and internal energy it'll rot."

The head guard (or you guess he is, the uniform is nicer) cuts down a guard to your left and glances at you and then goes back to keeping an eye on these thugs as he takes up a defensive stance.

"Who are you, Xia?" he asks, his eyes moving between targets. This guy's footwork and saber stance isn't half bad. You could see how he could get put in charge of these other guys.

"Backup," you say simply.

"Pardon?"

"I mean I'm here to help. I don't suppose you'd believe I'm wandering hero of justice just passing by?" you inquire.

"I'm guessing there's more to it then that," he notes dryly.

"Little bit."

"I'll take what help I can get, anyway," he decides.

You dodge another throw of the guy with the rope dart and decide to jerk if from his hand as your wrap it around your arm and yank it free!

You plant a kick into the knee of a guy with a saber to your right before whipping the heavy rope around his throat and yanking him down to the street!

"There's too many!" the head guard says, as yet another of his men fall to the thugs!

"Just hang back and protect the carriage, I got this!" you say, sending another flurry of precise strikes at thug with a two-handed saber.

This was all a lot easier when you had a saber.

"Your Lightfoot skill is excellent!" he says as he slices one down and gathers his men to more tightly defend the carriage.

"Your saberwork's not bad either," you compliment back.

"Can you escape with Lady Yuan?" you he asks, his eyes seeing his men an calculating his odds.

"You mean, what, carry her? Yeah, I guess," you say, covering his back. "I don't have anywhere to carry her TO right now though. Kinda just got here."

"Take her to Golden Eagle Tower! It's just down this road, you can't miss it! Just get her to safety!"

"Will they let you guys live?" you say as you duck in past another one's guard and launch a brutal flurry of Yue-style boxing moves you picked up down south, dropping him like a sandbag then pulling back again.

"We can delay them while you escape! Go!" he tries to reassure.

"Not what I asked," you point out.

He pauses as he glances around.
"I...might be able to survive. But most of us would die stalling them," he admits.

"Yeah, then I'm not interested," you decide simply. "I'll keep as many alive as I can, just hang back and play defense!"

"You can't possibly keep EVERYONE from being hurt alone! You're not even armed!" he points out.

"Hm. Oughtta do something about that," you note, then leave the carriage and charge forward into the mass of them!

You land as you plant a kick into the solar plexus of one, knocking him down, but in the middle of the group you are quickly surrounded by them and they charge you from all sides!

You smile and inhale as you;

>FOCUS!
>SEPARATE YIN AND YANG!
>FEEL THE FORCE BUILD!

You exhale, throwing both arms out to either side!

>SCATTER THE POWER!

You light up in a brief corona of cobalt lightning and fire, your loose cloak incinerating into blue flames as a brief semi-transparaent bubble 4 feet wide and tall flashes into existence from your body!

Their weapons hit the bubble at once and sparks run along them, distorting the blades and deflecting their weapon before tearing them free from their hands and flinging them onto the air!

The bubble pops and there's a thunderous crashing sound and the cobalt distortion flings everyone anywhere near it back away, knocking them down as if a gust of wind struck them!

(long time lurker/fan, usually thread has archived when I see it :( )
>>
>HEAVEN'S BLESSINGS 4TH FORM: SCATTERING THUNDER

>Unlike the prior three forms of the style, all of which have direct offensive applications, the fourth technique is an almost purely defensive one.

>By rotating Yin and Yang and scattering the resulting energy outside of your body rather then directing it to a limb to increase power and discharge it directly, an extremely short-lived bubble of energy is created.

>Metal objects within this bubble conduct large amounts of electricity (though not enough to kill) and find their travel path warped through a force akin to magnetism that scholars cannot explain. The close you are to the center of the bubble distortion, the worse the static discharge and warping effect is. This usually causes them to drop their weapons reflexively. The electrical discharge at close range is equal in power to a Form One discharge. Once the bubble is breached by any physical attack, it burts and sends a thunder-like shockwave that usually knocks down

>The downsides of this are significant; the student of the form must be gronded when using the form, as well as briefly needing to stay still to use it. The bubble dissipates immediately up being breached and can only be maintained for a second at the most anyway. Finally, no other forms of Heaven's Blessings are usable for a few seconds as Yin and Yang rebalances themselves, possibly leaving the student critically vulnerable in a fight.
>>
>>41831505
Nice. Magnetic deflector, with an added repulsion attack. I can see some nice uses for that. The cooldown will be a bitch, but I think we can work around it.
>>
>>41831581
In effect briefly turning himself into a superconductor (as he always does) while generating his own electromagnetic field he expels it to do a variation of this little nifty physics trick.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meissner_effect
>>
>>41831662
I figured it was something along those lines, yeah. Superconductors do some cool things to electromagnetism, they're a great place to mine weird tricks from. Personally, I'd like to see him perform flux pinning, that would be neat.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flux_pinning
>>
About five of the guys rushing you get knocked down as their weapons are flung away, catching a saber in mid-aid and slicing out as your enemies fall, gutting one, slashing the chest open of another and slitting the throat of one more just before they fall to the ground!

"Aaww, now what the hell was that?!" the knife guy says, clearly highly annoyed. "That's cheating!"

You raise the saber above your head and take up a fighting stance.
Form Four is weird; after you figured it out you realized that while it didn't tire you out or make you sore like One and Two do, or simply physically exhaust you like Three does, it seems to leave you functioning but prevent usage of your Heaven's Blessings moves

"I'm sorry, were there rules that we previously agreed-upon before this fight?" you ask sarcastically. "Because from where I was standing it looked like you just kinda attacked them out of nowhere."

"Well, yeah, but they're totally out in the open! That makes them fair game!" he argues.

"Bullshit! If you want to make this a fair fight then let's do it!" you challenge.

"Oh, yeah? And what do I get out of it? Seriously, I can just kill all you guys right here and take the girl. Why risk my reputation on it to fight some random xia?" he points out, still looking bored.

"I've been here less then five minutes and I've already dropped nine guys. So far you've just stood there and haven't done fuck-all," you point out. "And I'm gonna be honest with ya; that doesn't scream 'badass' to me."

"Tch!" he mouths, gritting his teeth. "Fine, whatever. When I beat you we get the girl, deal?"

"Confident, aren't we?" you say back, smiling a little, leaning the curve of the saber you've appropriated across one shoulder. "And if I win your boys fuck off. Which is honestly a better deal for you then winning is for me, because I promise you I WILL find a way to kill or cripple every one of these guys if we keep fighting, you included."

"Man you talk big for some runt that came out of nowhere," the guy says, loosening his arms and drawing our his knives.

One of his men approaches him from the right side, bowing nervously.

"Uuuuh...shouldn't we stick to the plaGGGK!" he begins before a hand movement so fast you can barely see it slices the man's throat open and leaves him bleeding in the street as the knife-user makes an annoyed expression.

"Anyone else think my idea is a bad one?" he says loudly, and his gang widely agrees that his is the best plan.

"Are you done procrastinating yet? I'm about to fall asleep standing up over here," you say, a little surprised by how fast that strike was but not showing it on your face.

"Ouyang Feng, White Knife Style, accepts your challenge," he says formally. "And you are?"

Ouyang Feng's mouth suddenly spreads into a wide, toothy grin that seems to nearly split his face in two.

"No such luck. For you anyway," you say with a smirk back at him.

You wait for a tick before flying forward in an explosion of movement, your appropriated saber held in your right hand and primed to slash at his waistline!

He waits until the last second to dodge, leaping back just enough to be able to deflect the slash away with a light slap of his left knife, leading in with a probing thrust of his right!

You duck below the strike and pull back, fending him off with a slice at his collarbone which he dodges with another conservative step-parry move!

"Nice footwork!" you compliment as you aggressively press him, your free-flowing saber strikes arcing in from all directions as you exploit your blade's greater reach!

"Same to you," he says casually as his eyes focus on you, clearly completely focused on dodging. "If you're really who you say you are, I could see how you got your rep...beyond your daddy's name I mean."

He's trying to get a rise out of you.
A year ago that would've worked too.
Not so much anymore.

Steel flashes between you and around him as you parry, dodge, and strike each other in a careful dance of testing limits!

You push him back again as he tries to hook his left blade around for a thrust at your side, which you leap over and bring your saber into an overhead chop at his skull inside his guard, you hanging in the air for a few seconds as the blade descends!

Then he grins again and you realize he's been bating you.

>"WHITE KNIFE STYLE: BLOODY STEEL WEB!"

He cries, then suddenly his arms blur and seemed warp from sheer impossible speed as he spins a steel web of death around him, arms moving so fast it's like a solid wall of slashing steel!

You grit your teeth and Rotate Yin and Yang as your chop falls, lightning and blue fire sparking along the length of the blade, trying to power through his defenses!

It descends like a bolt of thunder and impacts against the solid steel barrier of blazingly fast cuts, discharging it's power into it upon the first contact with his knives, causing him to grit his teeth and grunt as lighting shoots through his body upon the rapid-fire contact of his blades upon the edge of your weapon!

Then your saber breaks.

"Shit!" you breathe, kicking away at the same time he does the same, both of you at a respectable distance, breathing hard.

"Heh...nice trick," he says with a grin, his arms still shaking slightly as you look at the broken-off blade of your saber in frustration.

Looks like your earlier theory was right; you DID break your original saber's blade, not the guy you were fighting.

The only thing you can think of that would cause it is pure stress; when you use Form One and channel energy through a weapon you're dumping an enormous amount of highly unstable force into an object that wasn't designed to handle it any more then your body was.
The difference is your body can be trained to briefly contain and redirect the force caused by rotating yin and yang, but steel stays exactly the same. Combine that with the added force your blows have and the usual stresses of intense combat, and you have a recipe for shattered weapons when you use Form One. The only reason your original saber didn't break when you first started using it was because your control over Form One was less powerful and the craftsmanship was excellent. An average weapon will shatter after one or two uses depending on the weight and heft.

"So that's why you never used a weapon, huh?" you say; thinking of your father's preference for bare-handed combat. Of course he was also ridiculously powerful on top of that, but the idea still sounds correct to you.
>>
>>41837733
So we've gotten too strong to use Form One with blades anymore. Damn.
>>
"Need a minute?" Feng quips as he stretches his arms to loosen them up after your attack.

You mentally swear; his weapon barely made contact and he STILL had time to pull away from you. You think if he wanted to even the contact would be necessary.

He smirks, sees you looking at his knives then his arms suddenly blur again as he once again weaves a web of death around him, spinning and twirling his knives even as he does, creating a brief gust of wind around him as his arms move!

Your eyes follow the movements, watching him weave them in and out of his defense, then he suddenly stops and holds up his hands palms out.
Both are empty.

You look and see he had tossed them into the ground maybe half a second ago...and you couldn't even see him do it.
You actually can't follow his knife strikes...they're just too damn fast.

"Full confession?" he begins, kneeling down to pick up the paired blades and yanking them free before spinning them back into his defensive stance. "One of the reasons I'm not so famous is because I've killed literally every single person who I ever bothered to fight."

His attacks aren't flashy or unique or stylish...they're just so impossibly fast that they can't really be defensed against at the range he uses them.
His good footwork and careful defense keeps him alive long enough to get just inside the reach of a sword or saber. While normally the split second of advantage you'd get by moving in so close would be near-useless (their strike would still hit you after all), HE can slash dozens, maybe even HUNDREDS of times in that single instant, carving his enemy up like a pig before their strike even lands.

You kick up another fallen saber into your hand.
You've gotten a lot better at hand to hand since you learned that foreign boxing stuff, but your skin isn't made out of metal or anything and as soon as you get within arms reach or leg length he'll slice you to ribbons.
>>
He stretches out his arms to their full length, blades pointed outward, and you get the message easily enough;

>>
>>41838502
Above board (which Sky would know, hence me telling you), the slight pause before activation is extremely risky as fast as he is, and worse he's actually seen you do it already so he knows what to look for.

Had you decided to flee your eventual first fight with this guy would likely have gone quite differently because he'd have never seen that move before you used it on him.
>>
You rush in again, leading with your saber and keeping him at a distance!

He doesn't seem to mind, deftly and slightly dodging away from each blow like an insect buzzing just out of reach of your strikes. You have to resist the urge to go after him, realizing he's trying to get you to extend yourself farther!

His style is weird; if you heard it described, especially his blazingly quick arm movements, you'd think it was an extremely offensive style of fighting but in practice it isn't that way at all.
He focuses on his footwork most of the time, making it simple and not flashy at all, conserving energy to focus on dodging and avoiding getting hit while remaining just close enough to bait the attacker into coming within his kill-radius.

He's basically a purely defensive fighter right up until he strikes, at which point his offense is so dizzyingly quick that it instantly overwhelms his foe.

You try to focus on his legs to break his footwork, but his focus on defense is so complete right now that even this doesn't work, and he still dodges just beyond reach!

"You know, most folks would be dead by now," he admits as he leaps back from another slash, lightly slapping away the blade; an unnecessary move, but he's taunting you, showing you he can do it.

"Most folks aren't me," you point out.
If you had ANY hidden weapons skill at all then you're sure YOU could put HIM at a disadvantage, but it's an area of your training your father completely neglected.

We still got that rope-dart?

Way I see it, his lol-radius-of-death techique might be a pretty strong defensive tactic against us, since we use our style best unarmed, but it has two potential weaknesses that come to mind:
Firstly, the durability of his daggers; slashing something hundreds of times every time he fights cannot be good for how long his daggers last. Unfortunately, this isn't much to our immediate advantage, unless his daggers are already on the verge of breaking.

Secondly, he cannot guard behind himself, and possibly above. One possible way to bypass his defenses would be to catch him off-guard with an attack to the rear.

Come to think of it, given how hard and fast he's swinging his daggers, I'd imagine (or at least hope) he'd have to plant his feet pretty firmly on the ground to not lose his balance. If we go for his rear, either he'd turn more slowly than he otherwise would, or he'd not swing his knives at full capacity.

>An average weapon will shatter after one or two uses depending on the weight and heft.
Out of curiosity, what if we charged daggers with Form One briefly before throwing them?
>>
>>41839286
>Out of curiosity, what if we charged daggers with Form One briefly before throwing them?

Throwing weapons in Wuxia is called Hidden Weapons skills (because usually you throw lightweight concealable weapons on your body) and while Sky can throw stuff he lacks almost any training in using it as a proper attack since it's an area of his training his father neglected entirely, in strafing teaching Sky how to use swords and saber's mostly.

Sky could indeed use ranged attacks, but without training it's almost complete strength and luck if he hits, not skill.
>>
>>41839149
>[Try confusing him by switching up weapons!]
Dude must have some impressive cultivation if this hasn't tired him out yet. I don't think we can stalemate him. And we don't have skill with throwing. Switching to a different weapon might not work, he seems pretty adaptable, but it's got a better shot than our other options.
>>
>>41839512
Well, what if we found a bunch of acorns? Would that help?
>>
>>41839512
>no lightning acorns
Dad confirmed for worst teacher

So we can't use the rope-dart effectively either.
>>
>>41839512
New plan: chuck a handful of dust into the air, and charge it with Form One. What could go wrong?
>>
>>41839574
>>41839626
The acorn had the problem it had when it hit Yuan Shengli; it's just not a powerful enough weapon to really do any damage even when charged with Form One without lots of force and precision put behind it.

Sky completely lacks the precision and skill needed because that falls under Hidden Weapons skills.
>>41839586
Renshu really didn't like "unmanly" weapons, and also was just so damn powerful that he didn't need regular ones at all; how can a tool of steel compared to the power of a godlike fist after all?
>>

Then we punch him.
THE PLAN IS FOOLPROOF!
>>
>>41839798
Thing is. I could really see Sky doing that.
>>
>>41839798
The problem here is that instead of asking us to stop he'd either cut us up or cut the acorns down with that crazy speed.
>>
>>41839896
Do you suppose he's fast enough that, if we swing a saber in each hand from both his left and right at the same time, he can parry both of them without committing both his daggers?
>>
What if we got him stuck in something? Like a nearby wall, or a..tree. I dunno. Make him lose the knives, then he's defanged.
>>
>>41840085
THAT'S IT! We make him get snagged on part of the scenery, then hit him at range with our spells or crossbow and-

Oh wait, I forgot this isn't Dark Souls.

Ignore me.
>>
>>41840049
Probably? I haven't voted to use form 2 yet because I feel like it would exhaust us just to match his base speed.
>>
That prophecy was quite interesting
>>
>>41840085
Problem is, given how much he's been showing off so far, we can probably expect him to have enough control over his swings to never do that without it being on purpose. We need to find a weakness in his style and exploit it.

Ranged attacks are a no-go, so, like I said, the most obvious thing would be to exploit the presumable lack of mobility to attack from a direction where he has less knife-coverage. Remember that, while he can deflect frontal attacks with both knives, he only has knife available to deflect attacks from the side, and none from the rear.

>>41840202
Probably true. If we could just power through his defense, for instance with Qiu Qiang's Iron Body or simply uprooting a fucking tree and throwing the whole thing at him, that would be ideal. Unfortunately, we don't have Ba's magical no-sell-all-your-shit skills yet.

The less honorable option would be to hurl his own men at him, but I doubt Sky is that dishonorable.
>>
You suddenly drop your saber and kick up a new one into your opposite hand, suddenly forcing him to play defense in a different direction, before dropping that one and kicking up a hatchet and letting a few heavy chops move in before you switch back to the saber!
His brow furrows in concentration as he struggles to dodge your changing offenses, but he doesn't show any difficultly in doing so.

Then you kick gravel into his face with your right leg, and he closes his eyes and jumps back WAY outside of your reach, trying to get himself some distance before you can strike during his vulnerable moment!

That's a mistake.
As he leaps away you activate Form Two, exploding forward and arriving at his landing spot BEFORE he gets there, turning and swinging your appropriated saber and slashing at his exposed back!

To his credit the saber barely grazes his back, drawing blood but not fatally cutting into him, as he throws himself forward to avoid your attack as he lands and spins back to face you, his defense back in place.

"Good footwork, but you need stable legging when you do that trick of yours, don't you? And you can't cover attacks you can't see the angle they come from or from behind, right?"

He grins again, giving a "tch!"

"Alright, Lightning Tiger; I'll call this one your win. This is take too damn long and we're about to have company. Next time though, we'll finish this up," he says, putting away his knives and whistling loudly!

He and his goons turn and book it, dashing away.
You don't bother chasing them; there's no point in running after fleeing enemies when your objective is escorting the palanquin.

You look at the cheap mass-produced oxtail saber in your hand and drop it.
You need to get a proper weapon.

Behind you you hear the whistles of the constabulary and in front of you is the palanquin and the remaining guards, their weapons still drawn and their eyes wary.
>>
>>41840301
It's also the most blatant piece of foreshadowing I've done. Very little of what I say or do when I write this is accidental, but the thread-based nature means most people don't pick up on the foreshadowing at all. The prophecy was a way of getting around that issue.

You see the head guard's defensive stance and the tense looks of the other guards left after the attack.

"So that's a 'no' on the victory high-five then, I'm guessing?" you ask dryly.

"Stay back, Lightning Tiger!" the guard says. "I thank you for saving Lady Yuan, but there is bad blood between our Clan and yours!"

"First of all; you're welcome. Second of all, there's no 'bad blood'. I didn't even WANT to kill Yuan Shengli at the time. Thirdly, no clan. Just me," you correct.

"You'll forgive me if I don't take you at your word. Whatever personal grudges you may have against the Yuan Clan-" he begins again, but you interrupt.

"I only met you guys a year ago. I've never even met Yuan Qiyue. Why would I hold a personal vendetta against her? Or anyone from the Yuan Clan at all?" you logically point out. "Is she hurt, by the way?"

He pauses and leans over, saying something into the palanquin you can't hear, before turning back.

"She is uninjured," he confirms.
He pauses again and then turns back to you.

"...Lady Yuan....wishes to speak to you," he says hesitantly, clearly reluctant about the idea.

>WDYS?

>[Agree. You can confirm for yourself she's safe that way.]

>[Disagree. You're willing to take this loyal guy at his word that she's safe. And you're honestly not too thrilled about looking at the orphaned daughter of the good man you had to kill, if you're being honest about it.[/spoiler]

"Also you should work on your form. Your technique isn't half bad but that wolf would've eaten you guys and still be hungry for more."
>>
>>41841635
I would think that, of all people, we are the least qualified to tell people to 'work on their forms'.

You briefly hesitate, then give a small nod.
The guards lower their weapons, but don't put them away, keeping an eye on you as you slowly and non-threateningly walk over to the palanquin and walk up on the steps.

The front door of it slides open, and a beautiful young woman in gold and red with fair skin sits there, staring at you intently, her eyes focused and seemingly unafraid.

"You are Feng Tiankong?" she asks.
You nod.

"...did you kill my father?" she asks, hesitant.

"Yes," you say flatly. No point in dancing around that.
She takes a deep breath at your answer, obviously trying to steady herself.

"Why?" she asks.

"Because he would have died anyway. Because when he did he would've taken all of Chengdu with him when the Imperial Army finally reached the palace. Because if he was dead there would be no reason for the Army to stay," you explain, though it's a small comfort even to you. It must mean less the nothing to her.

"I....see," she says, considering your words before asking her next question.

"Why did you save me?"

"Because after our fight your father made me promise to look after you and ensure your safety before he died. I agreed. So here I am."

Her eyes widen slightly, but she doesn't question it; oaths like that are often made between members of the Wulin. It just usually happen between long-term rivals, not people who had only recently met.
And definitely not between assassins and their targets like half of Tianxia seems to think you were.

"And now?" she asks again.

"Now, I go. I was here to make sure you didn't get killed. Now I'm going to leave your life and you'll never have to deal with me ever again," you say simply, turning to leave.

"Wait!" she suddenly says, and you stop.
>Just walk away, you idiot. Before she can say anything else,
you think.

"I am still in danger, Hero Lightning Tiger. My family and position is in danger because of...because of what happened in Chengdu," she says coolly.
>>
>[Disagree. You're willing to take this loyal guy at his word that she's safe. And you're honestly not too thrilled about looking at the orphaned daughter of the good man you had to kill, if you're being honest about it.[/spoiler]
>>
"....so?" you say, without turning around.
>Shut up shut up shut up, just walk away.

"If you truly are bound by oath to my father then that oath stands until you can truly ensure my long term safety," she points out.

"....where are you going with this?" you ask, knowing the answer.
>Leave now you jackass, you already have WAY too many obligations as it is, so just walk away and-

"I command you, Lightning Tiger, to stay with me as my agent and my bodyguard until the affairs of my clan are finally put in order," she says imperiously.

You sigh.
"....Sure. I guess I can do that," you agree.

"Good. Now follow my troupe, we are going to Golden Eagle Tower," she says, her eyes as hard and as sharp as flint as she stares at you.

>WDYD?

>"I'll follow you when I'm ready. You'll be safe at Golden Eagle Tower until I get there, it's their job to be bodyguards after all." [Refuse]

>"Sure, why not. It's not like I've got a million other things to do or anything," [Agree]

i just wanna see what this will do.

Might as well since we are already here.

Ruthless and hungry, as expected of someone literally named Seventh Month. Fortunately, our promise was to keep her safe, not to help her clean up the aftermath of her father's decisions. We could just as easily kidnap her and send her to live with someone farmers, under the Lightning Tiger Witness Protection Programme.

Unfortunately, Tiankong is weak to women.

"If I'm under your employ, think I could get some new equipment? None of that standard stuff, my abilities will destroy common made items. I need master work weapons.I can't body guard very well without the right stuff."
>>
>>41842309
>"Sure, why not. It's not like I've got a million other things to do or anything," [Agree]

"I DO have other things to do then follow you everywhere you know?" you point out.

"As of precisely now these things are irrelevant," she succinctly says. "You are fulfilling the oath you swore to my father at the time of his death. This takes priority."

"...sure, Your Majesty," you reply sourly, getting off from the palanquin and heading to join the other guards. "And I'm also good at running and drinking, if you need that done too."

"No, your martial skills will be quite sufficient at the moment. Do your duties well and I might see fit to reward you, though I am under no obligation to do so thanks to your oath," she replies, not rising to your bait.

"Mmm. Thanks bunches," you sarcastically bite back.

The guards give you space and you walk by yourself in the street at the head of the procession, flanked by the head guardsman.

You weren't doing anything important for the rest of the day anyway.

>To Be Continued.....

Stopping here for tonight.
As I said I have a lot less time to QM now unfortunately, but I'll try to make as much as I can reasonably get away with.

Thanks for running Sage, good to see you again. Hope to see you in the future.

How close did we come to having Qiyue die, anyway? Or is that going to be next thread?
>>
I'd also like the personally thank the people on here who's enjoyment motivated me to continue with this story.

It's always hard for me to tell how many people are ever actually on these things; it says 44 right there, but due to moving IP addresses it could be half that or more or even less, so I never was really sure if I had an actual audience or just the same six or seven people.

It's still really nice to know that people missed Sky and his story as much as I missed telling it.
>>
>>41843085
You basically made all the right choices, but there was basically no possibility of her dying here; she's too important to this section of the plot to kick it early on, and in many ways her situation is the framing device for Sky's current story at the moment.

What your choices did here was affect the initial relationship you had with her and her guards as well as exactly how you will interact with the remains of the Yuan Clan and their current complicated political situation.
>>
>>41842894
Thank you, Wulin Sage. I missed your quests.
>>
Any chance we can get a look at Sky's stats
>>
>>41843162
Well I missed the thread completely but, I still got here in time (hopefully) to thank you for running. Great to see you back.
>>
>>41843727
Yeah, I'm updating them now.
They'll be in the next thread where they always were.
>>41843750
You did get here in time, yes.
Thank you.
>>
>>41843779
Do you have an idea when the next thread will be? zif not, how will you communicate when it is?
>>
>>41843817
>Do you have an idea when the next thread will be?

Hopefully tomorrow.

>zif not, how will you communicate when it is?

I'm still setting up a new Twitter so that won't work at all.

I guess just keep an eye on tg and make extensive use of the catalogue and Search functions using the keyword "Wulin".

There are never THAT many results with that one.
>>
>>41844143
>There are never THAT many results with that one.
Sad but true.
>>
You might not have many live viewers but me and my group of friends along with my significant other (7) love the story archives
>>
>>41845653
See, when I hear an entire GROUP of friends like my stuff I get genuinely surprised.

Seriously, if I'd known that thread I'd started on that one lazy Saturday I had would get the kinda attention it has I'd probably have spent more time writing shit down beforehand!
>>
>>41845687
Or at least backing it up for when life bushwhacks you. Hey-oh!

I may need to do an archive binge... Last I recall, Sky was lying in bed going, "Ow... Oh, so THAT'S who my dad is! Neato."
>>
>>41845767
Yeah...stuff's kinda happened since then.
>>
^_^ really its great reading! Launch that novel!
