Interlude: Price of Failure

You have been lying in the school nurse's office for a few minutes now. The whole of your past week or so is a weird blur, but you clearly remember what you had been doing just before you came to in the art room.

Its the same with your friends. The school nurse steps out a moment as you and the others rest. What happened to you? Why would you bully Kairi Osaka, you don’t really know her that well or have a reason to dislike her; do you?

This is all so confusing.

“I am displeased,” an unexpected voice says from the door.

It's your classmate, Mio-chan! She’s President of a fan club you’re in.

Wait.

Something is wrong with her eyes.

You remember something.

You go to scream but a hand clamps over your mouth from above. They’re on the wall!

“So very displeased,” she says again with an icy tone as the student sticking to the wall above you opens their mouth.

Something round and black sticks out from between their teeth as a horrific chittering sound as threads of gray silk fill your field of vision. It is the last thing you and the others will be seeing for a time.

Interlude End

Quest Start

You are Mikage Chiba, second year high school student age 15, formerly you were the third woman to wear the mantle of the Magical Guardian of Love & Justice knowns as Sailor Moon. Your mother and sister came before you, your younger sister has succeeded you. Now you work from the shadows to help her against a dangerous foe while marshaling your own resources and allies while recovering from the traumatic experience that brought you to abandon the tiara in the first place.
>>
>>41889868

After the rather tense matter in the art room the three of you stood a bit in silence. While you knew about that secret of Midori’s from that whole shared dream experience, you aren’t sure if Kairi knew. Still, the blonde girl turns to look at you and takes a ragged breath before nodding and slowly walking out of the room.

You and Kairi glance at one another the tense moment passed.

The two of you follow Midori back to class, and you tell Yoshi that you’ll talk to him later. He asks after what wound up happening, why Umeki-san and Mori-san looked so shaken. The free period drags on and you tell him you’ll tell him later, though he still wants to talk to her about what the two of them saw in the classroom earlier and wondered if you had any special perspectives on it. An acknowledgement of what he witnessed you do as the beast.

Free period ends, and everyone returns to class. The end of the academic day comes quickly, you know you have a standing appointment with Principal Sakurada about both your academic withdrawal and about her queries about her son, Yoshi.

Decisions decisions. You muse on this as you and your classmates begin packing your things; some students strolling over to check the posted rotation cycle of classroom cleanup committee.

>Go see the Principal right away

Well, before you go do something, you should at least check the cleaning committee rotation list to see if you are on classroom cleanup today. Packing your bag you rise and head over to check out the week’s printed sheet.

Huh, you’re on the schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday. No responsibility today, but Kairi is on today and Wednesday. Midori is on today and Tuesday. Keiko is on Friday and Saturday. Noting when your friends are on it a touch useful. You don’t have any overlap days with Umeki-san or Yoshi for that matter this week, both of them are on today and Friday.

Really, you wish the school’s cleaning committee would put some effort into standardizing and ensuring a regular rotation. Hmm, maybe that’s something to talk to your class representative about?

“Aww, the weekend shifts!” Keiko Sugimoto whines beside you.

Your far more popular friend looks crestfallen at the prospect of having to spend time after class cleaning on those days. They are the worst to get. She huffs and turns to face you.

“Chiba-san,” she chirps in a friendly but feigned unfamiliar manner, “Would you like to come with me after clubs let out today to the Crowne?”

~Why?~ you query, ~Are asking Mori-san and Kairi-chan too?~

You are usually never one to turn down a trip to the Crowne Arcade; however you have been hitting the sweets a bit heavily as of late.

“Actually I was invited to Karaoke by your little sister and her friends,” she explains and lifts up two plastic cards with magnetic strips on the side visible to you.

~Really?~ well, she is the sixth senshi and now an outlier to their group, ~You sure I wouldn’t be crowding?~

“No,” she shrugs, and hands you one of the cards in her hand, “Oh, Yeon-san wanted me to give you this,”

Looking down at the card in your hand you notice that above the strip is a white space with a cartoon rendering of a smiling Luna, your shape shifting sentient talking moon cat. The back of the card is a black space with Artemis, the Aino’s sentient talking moon cat. Both sides have magnetic strips and have text reading “Crowne Pass”. Odd.

Also odd, a few contemptuous eyes fall upon you during your friendly exchange with Keiko.

>Sure, I’d love to.

~Maybe,~ you think to yourself, ~Can I get back to you on that?~

“Sure,” she shrugs as she pockets her card, “If you think you’ll be busy, I understand,”

~Did Mori-san talk to you yet?~ you ask.

“Briefly,” she sighs, “Those girls are in my fan club. I’ll see if I can catch the President about it,”

~So, having a fanclub,~ you smile mockingly to which she replies.

“Hey, its not something to be embarrassed about,” she waves your jape off, “I mean, Sailor Moon has fanclubs,”

You grouse. You grouse hard. She smiles.

Grumbling, you duck away and start off toward the Principal’s office. On the way, you review the front and back of that card again. Yup, those are definitely pictures of Luna and Artemis on this Crowne Pass. What the hell is a Crowne Pass anyway?

Is it a rewards card? Why are there magnetic strips on both sides?

Whatever, nothing to worry about right now.

As you approach the administrative offices, you see Student Council President Nui Takeda calming standing outside the room and using a compact mirror to sneak looks into the office. She gives you a nod, a wave, and a gesture asking you to keep quiet about her presence.

As you turn into the offices, you know why. Daigo Endo is nervously waiting in the reception area. Uncertain about what he’s doing here and fidgety beneath the passive boredom of the office workers of the administration of the school.

“Hello,” says one such person, “Can I help you?”

~Yes, I’m Mikage Chiba. Principal Sakurada requested I see her today after classes,~ you explain primly as you stow the card in your wallet.

You are directed straight to her office, as you are expected. Knocking before you enter, she calls you in and you find Principal Sakurada seated at her desk and closing a folder of some paper work or information or another.

“Chiba-san, thank you for coming,” she smiles and edges a bowl of candy toward the side of the desk you’ll be sitting closes to, “Please, sit,”

Is she trying to appeal to your family’s known tendencies? She might be, she was one of your mother’s teachers in junior high.

We'd like to proceed to the academic self study, but still attempt to attend the more social aspects. Allow us to work at our own pace and rebuild our social skills as well.

Reaching over and picking up a single wrapped candy from the offered bowl, you in wrap the confection slowly and sit there silently. Your eyes are locked onto Principal Sakurada as you pop the light brown confection into your mouth. The pleasant surprise of chewy caramel and creme melts across your tongue and you resolve to see what Principal Sakurada wants to talk about first.

After a quiet moment, she clears her throat and opens up the folder.

“Well now, Chiba-san,” she begins, “Last year I asked you to give me one more year of classes before I approved your requested Academic Withdrawal. Accounting for the time lost from school repairs, the last pending day of you participating in regular classes would be the end of next week,”

~Sounds about right,~ you go over the mental math in your head.

“However,” she tuts, “This was offered on the grounds that you were still having difficulty in school and your ability to socialize and recover to your trauma from your Junior High graduation ceremony,”

~Yes it was,~ you nod, ~Recently I’ve actually had a fairly dense collection of panic attacks,~

“I imagine you would have,” she nods and turns the page of her folder, “Now then, would you like to talk about the aftermath of your last panic attack on campus before the attack on the school,”

>Yes, what do you talk about regarding that?

~Ah, well,~ you search for the words, ~It was such a busy day that I can’t remember,~

“Ah, well I have some accounts of what happened from Toriko-san,” she reviews a page from her folder, “And frankly, from what I’ve been told, you’ve been doing much better,”

~Yeah,~ you shrug, ~Well,~

“Or rather,” she chides, “You’ve been making the effort,”

She smiles, its a friendly smile, but you know there is some kind of goal or objective underlying it.

“Standing up for Osaka-san, pulling yourself out of your panic attack,” she begins looking down the paper, “Rushing back into danger to help your injured classmates,”

~Please,~ you wave off the recitation of your deeds while your other hands snakes out another caramel from the bowl, ~Principal Sakurada, you’re embarrassing me,~

“Perhaps,” she muses, “but it's only us here, and I’m trying to praise you. Just recently I’ve seen you talking to other people, the same with Osaka-san,”

She closes the folder and hums to herself.

“Actually, come to think of it,” she spins her chair a bit to look out the window, “I guess that day was stressful. First the attack, and then a monster appearing at that concert you got tickets to,”

Well, she seems set on trying to deter you from pursuing the withdrawal. Now she’s just being blatant and borderline smug about it.

“Come to think of it, did you go?” she muses, “Did you go with any friends? I know you got more than one ticket,”

>Admit you went, do you admit that you went with people

I think we can work it out, going for the half-measure solution of self study for acedemics and coming in for others 'as we can' might do the trick, particularly if we note that we will be making an effort to stay in contact with her son.
Lay it on with the reduced stress allowing us more ability to reconnect socially.

~I went to the show,~ you admit to the principal but stay silent afterwards.

“Alright,” she nods at your poignant silence, “Did you enjoy yourself?”

~It was a nice show before the monster showed up,~ you admit, ~Seeing the new Senshi was-~

Trailing off you look to the side and sigh. She’s dancing around things. Why doesn’t she want to get to the root of things, your withdrawal.

Honestly you aren’t certain about it yet. Leaving outright would free up your time for fighting this enemy, but do you really want to leave school now?

You think about the abuse both you and Kairi have recently been receiving; even if it may be spurred by something unnatural you imagined there would be some backlash against you. Would backing out now be like running away? Leaving Kairi to fend for herself?

No, Midori has her back. So does Keiko. She made friends with Saori, and now you have too. You’ve made friends, actually. Nui knows you are her friend, and now something is happening between you and Yoshi again.

Maybe, maybe you could make some kind of arrangement so you can do your independent study and still come to school to use the resources when you feel like it. For elective cycled classes, clubs, tests, and events? Or, or maybe it's alright to leave this place. There is so much to do that you can’t waste time just being a school girl.

These are hard times, and you don’t have the luxury of having something normal.

Or, could you?

“Chiba-san?” she asks, “Are you alright?”

~Yes, Principal Sakurada,~

“Anyway,” she sighs in a small amount of defeat, “I see you getting better, and I don’t think it’s necessarily in your best interest to pursue this withdrawal. I have no doubt you’ll do fine academically, but I think it would benefit you in other ways to stay,”

She stands up and walks around the table and kneels by the side of your chair.

“However, we did make a deal,” she says with conviction, “What do you want to do?”

It would be too obvious to bring something up about Yoshi to try and distract her. She sincerely wants to know what you want to do here, and now you aren’t entirely sure.

~Is there some way to build a middle ground?~ you ask with certainty.

“Middle ground?” she asks after you uncertain.

~Well, I could still test at school,~ you explain, ~And still come in part time for school resources, clubs, or elective modules? Think of it as a monitored independent study,~

She stands up and looks down at you, scrutinizing your verbal position.

“Is this a sign of second thoughts?” she queries as she crosses her arms.

~I don’t think so,~ you say after a moment of thought.

One of her hands rises to her temple and she massages it briefly before sighing.

“I’m not even sure if we can get away with that kind of program,” she mutters to herself, “The ongoing paperwork on that might be insane, I’ll have to meet with your parent’s again to hash out the details and permissions,”

Laughing a bit nervously to yourself as she drags herself back behind her desk, she pulls a binder off of one of her shelves.

“I’ll need some time to see if something can even be put together like that,” she explains, “No promises. On your way out, could you please let Endo-kun know that I’m ready to see him now and that he isn’t in trouble.

>Does he not know you want to talk to him about Yoshi?

~Does he not know you want to talk to him about Yoshi?~ you ask rather casually while getting up from your seat.

“Pretty much,” she snickers, “I think he might be covering for him for something and this will put him slightly on off his center,”

~Principal Sakurada,~ you say in mocked shock, ~That is devious! And kind of inspiring,~

“Well, I have a wealth of professional exp-” she pauses and looks at you with suddenly wide eyes, “Chiba-san, did you just call my son by his first name?”

~Well, we did talk earlier today and I think he’ll be okay,~ you explain with a smile as your words lay into your principal with a stunning flourish, ~You don’t need to worry about him so much. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me today and I look forward to talking more about this too,~

Before she can start grilling you any further, you slip out the door and pass through the reception area and let Daigo Endo know that he’s up. As you enter the administrative area, you no longer see Nui Takeda spying on Daigo anymore, which settles your nerves slightly.

Hmm...actually maybe that whole exit was miscalculation. Daigo knows you called Yoshi by his first name and as the boy’s best friend might be privy to some portion of your conversation on the rooftop. Speaking of best friends, you really need to confide in your own about that as well.

It would be slightly less awkward if certain other things weren’t out in the open between the two of you.

You decide that you want to talk to your friends about things, both what happened earlier with Umeki-san and what happened with you and Yoshi. Remembering that they both have classroom cleanup today you make your way back to your class.

The halls seem eerily empty at this hour, you don’t spend much time around the school after the bell unless you have cleanup detail. Maybe that will change once you settle on what it is you’ll actually wind up doing for your withdrawal, though Sakurada-san did not seem pleased about the paperwork.

Returning to your homeroom, you find Kairi and Midori diligently sweeping the last segment of the floor, and to your surprise Umeki-san and Yoshi stacking the desks and chairs in the back of the room. How could you have forgotten that, you just looked at the duty roster a little while ago? Hmm, this might get awkward fast.

You can’t very well talk to Midori and Kairi about Yoshi with the boy right there! Then again, Yoshi and Umeki-san are actively talking in hushed tones about what they witnessed earlier; you don’t think Yoshi betrayed your trust about your other identity but how would you begin to explain things to Umeki-san. She seems like a nice girl but you don’t know her well enough yet even though she shows promise as a potential Knight.

Also you don’t know her tastes well enough yet, and you want your own eyes to inspect the collection that Kairi-chan complained about.

>Head in openly, then move the conversation out
>Try to signal Kairi & Midori from the door

>Wait, you have telepathy

Yeah, I'll back this. Also, need to find an out of the way spot to hide out while we mind-chat.
Wouldn't do to be standing in the hall silently staring in.

Stepping back and away from the classroom, up and into the nearest stairwell, you relax your mind and reach out to your two friends in the classroom.

It connects easily as you feel the familiar buzz of your power executed. Nearby you feel the presence of Umeki-san and Yoshi, but they are ignorant of your own.

-Hey,- you broadcast to Kairi and Midori, -back from my meeting with the Principal,-

-Mikage-chan,- you feel Kairi pause and then resume her sweeping, -Is everything okay? How did things go with Principal Sakurada?-

-Yeah, just some stuff about my Academic Withdrawal,- you explain, -And maybe diverting her attention from Yoshi’s behavior, how’re you two?-

-Not my best,- Midori-chan admits in a distant slump, -It doesn’t help that there’s this awkward tension in the room with me and Umeki-san just kind of ignoring each other,-

-I thought you two made up?- you ask curiously.

-I don’t know what we did,- Midori grouses.

-Seemed like a forgiveness hug to me,- Kairi observes with a firm nod.

You laugh a bit to yourself as you stand mid way up the staircase, thoughts bubbling in your mind toward what you need to ask of your Knights and what you need to share with them now. The day isn’t quite over, though there is concern and worry for there is something terribly amiss at Juuban Municipal Highschool.
