You are Brother Antarius, sternguard veteran of the Lamenters space marine chapter. Due to your chapter's involvement in the Badab War, your chapter was sentenced to a hundred years of penitent crusade. Having barely survived the crusade, your chapter's fleet gathered to return to the Imperium and rebuild. Unfortunately, your ship suffered a major malfunction during the warp jump and was seperated from the fleet, landing centuries into the future. Only you and eight other marines survived, and there has been no sign of the rest of your chapter's fleet. With the fleet missing, it is now up to you and your surviving brothers to rebuild the chapter until the fleet can be located.

Your chapter has been escorted to the Feudal World of Heilos Prime, the world that is to become your chapter's new homeworld. Coming with you are 13 of Fumarius IV's survivors, who when given a choice chose to joing your chapter as chapter serfs, normal humans who assist the chapter through basic labor, assisting with repairs, and in some cases piloting some of the chapter's ships and vehicles, even engaging in battle when need be. Before landing on the planet proper, you traveled to one of the planet's two moons, where it's planetary governor is stationed. There, you learned that the chapter that lived here before was driven out for some transgression the governor was not at liberty to reveal. You may never know the name of the chapter which once lived here or what they did to be expelled from the planet, but fortunately their fortress-monastery still stands, and according to the governor their armory may still contain some equipment your chapter could use.

The shuttles fly above the clouds per the governor's request. It is nighttime currently, but the sky is illuminated by the planet's two moons, one full the other crescent. The shuttle's built-in auspex guides you to the mountain range where the fortress-monastery is located, cradled between the borders of the seven native factions that hold power here. The shuttles descends below the clouds, the light of the moons disappearing behind you. The snow capped mountains below rise high into the sky, the tallest among them bearing a gargantuan structure, the fortress monastery. Partially built into the mountainside, it's deactivated turrets point menacingly towards the sky, waiting only to be reactivated.

The shuttles land on the snow-covered ground, your brothers and the newly recruited chapter serfs climbing out. The cold makes the serfs shiver, all save the techpriest who is more machine then man. You advance towards the fortress's massive gate, advising the serfs to stand back just in case. A red scanner atop the metallic door blinks to life, scanning you and your brothers then processing the results.

“Adeptus Astartes identified. Welcome, brothers.”
>>
>>41891613
The door comes to life, slowly rumbling open and revealing the interior of the fortress. Lascannons, heavy bolters, and many other mounted defenses lie within, prepared to dispose of possible intruders. Indeed, they have done so for many years now, as you are greeted with bloodstained floors and the rotting corpses of those who tried to force their way in. Most seem quite old, their flesh long since rotten off to expose the now yellow bone beneath. Others seem much more fresh, their rotting flesh still clinging to the bones underneath.

The macabre sight and horrendous smell of charred and rotting flesh proves too much for some of the serfs, who rush aside to vomit in the bushes. One of the women covers the two children's eyes, ordering them to hold their noses until she says otherwise. You and your brothers are not so easily disgusted, however, although you do find the scent very unpleasant.

“The governor did say there would be bodies.” Akriel says, shaking his head at the sight.

“Indeed. These must be the poor fools who thought to steal from the dormant monastery. What shall we do with them then?” Sepheran asks.

>Just move them outside, you owe nothing to those who would steal from the Emperor's chosen warriors.
>Give them proper rites. Thieves they may be, but they are still citizens of the Imperium.

Not a lot of people here today, guess it's my fault for starting earlier than usual.

Anywho, writing now. While I do, here's some mechanics I wrote up regarding the red thirst, black rage, and fate points.

RED THIRST - One of the two curses that afflicts all Blood Angel successor chapters. The red thirst is an inherent, sometime literal bloodthirst found in the marines of these chapters. The red thirst drives these marines into a frenzy, increasing their physical capabilities and driving them to destroy their enemies in as violent a manner as possible. This comes at the price of control, marines suffering from the thirst's effects lose any sense of reason, as they are consumed by their desire to tear apart their foes. Experienced marines can gain a limited control over the thirst, learning to stave it off and, when necessary, ride it out. However, marines who rely too heavily on the thirst risk losing control permanently. Those unfortunate marines who completely succumb to the thirst's maddening lust for blood are sent to their chapter's death company, where they are contained where they will not harm anyone until it is time for battle, where the death company's chaplain will lead them into battle one last time. The thirst cannot be denied forever though. Continued denial of the thirst can lead to an even more violent episode once the thirst finally surfaces, and there is a higher risk of the marine permanently losing control. The Lamenters chapter was once immune to both the red thirst and black rage, but eventually both began to manifest in the chapter again. However, the Lamenters are still much more resistant to these curses than most other Blood Angel chapters, granting them a level of control not found in most other chapters.
>>
>>41891953
In mechanical terms, the red thirst can be denied or given into when it surfaces. A counter will follow how many times the thirst has been resisted, followed by a limit (Ex: 1/3). When the limit is reached, the next time the red thirst surfaces it cannot be resisted and players must roll or spend a fate point to take actions other than attack. If players choose to ride out the thirst before the counter is filled, it will reset back to 0. While under the effects of the red thirst, all damage is increased significantly and Antarius may continue to fight through grievous injuries.

BLACK RAGE - The second curse that all sons of Sanguinius bear, the black rage is a mysterious phenomena in which marines from the Blood Angels and their successors may experience visions of their primarch, Sanguinus, in his final moments. In more severe instances, they may even believe they are the primarch themselves. While experiencing these hallucinations, the marine grows significantly stronger and flies into a blind rage, attacking anything and everything in their path. Only the chapter's chaplains may get through to a marine suffering from these episodes, stopping them from attacking allies and pulling them back to reality if possible. Unlike the red thirst, the black rage cannot be controlled. Without swift intervention, the marine may be permanently lost to the black rage. Even with intervention, there is a chance the marine will not be able to break free from the rage's visions. In these instances, they are placed into the chapter's death company, where they are kept locked away where they cannot harm anyone until it is time for battle, where the death company's chaplain will lead them into battle one last time.
>>
>>41891970
In mechanical terms, the black rage may be experienced when Antarius is at critical health. Players may make a roll to break free of the rage's influence if a chaplain is present. If this roll is failed or a chaplain is not present, a fate point must be spent in order to return to reality. If the players have no fate point to spend during this episode, Antarius is lost to the black rage permanently and his story comes to an end.

FATE POINTS - Fate points are tokens that can be spent to achieve certain effects. A fate point can be spent to perform amazing feats, reroll failed rolls, or return to reality after succumbing to the black rage. Fate points are earned by completing plot arcs or accomplishing amazing deeds at QM discretion. You may hold up to 2 fate points. When Antarius advances in skill, players will be able to choose one of several boons, one of which is to increase their fate point limit.

“We shall leave them there for now, we must check the fortress for damage and see what supplies were left behind. We will build a pyre for them once we've done that.”

You and your brothers proceed past the fallen thieves, the serfs following close behind. You spread out in groups, searching the fortress monastery from top to bottom. Sepheram reports that the Reclusium will require some light repairs, but is otherwise fine. Uriel informs you that the Apothecarium is woefully understocked, but has all the equipment he needs to tend his brothers' wounds and begin creating Neophytes once you are able to find suitable recruits. Magron states that the foundries will require time and supplies to become operational, but lacks any significant damage. He reports that the Teleportoriums, however, are damaged and will require repairs to become operational once more. Overall, the fortress monastery will only require minor repairs and new supplies to become fully operational again. The armory is searched, and contains enough armor, weapons, and wargear to adequately supply up to 100 marines, and more will come in time as supplies are shipped here from off world. You also find two Thunderhawks, a Land Raider, three Land Speeders, and four suits of Dreadnought armor, more than enough vehicles for 9 marines but terribly little for a whole chapter. You will need to request more from Mars, particularly aerial vehicles as close air support is one of your chapter's specialties.
>>
>>41892772
With everything accounted for, you regroup at the entrance where the corpses still lie. Magron and the serfs stay behind to get started on repairs and carry supplies from the shuttles into the monastery. Meanwhile, you and the others bring the bodies outside and begin gathering wood for a pyre. The pyre is then lit and the bodies are thrown on as Sepheram recites them their final rites.

Just as you add the last body to the pyre, you detect something rustling in the bushes. Your reactions are instant, as everyone draws their weapons and turns towards the source of the noise. Whoever's behind the bushes freezes, their breath growing heavy with fear.

“Come out where we can see you.” You demand, bolter shoulder and ready.

The bushes rustle once more, and out comes a child, probably eleven or twelve and wearing some primitive set of armor, dragging an adult in similar armor with him. The adult appears to be heavily wounded and unconscious, while the child appears to be bleeding from a glancing cut in his side.

“Civilians, warriors from the look of it. Looks like something attacked them.” Uriel surmises. He takes a step forward, intending to examine their wounds when the child reaches for the blade on his belt and points it shakily at him, taking a step back. His eyes are wide with fear, nervously glancing back and forth between the eight of you.

>Restrain him. No primitive weapon will pierce your power armor.

You holster your bolter and hold up both hands, showing him you mean no harm. “We don't mean you harm, we only want to check your companion's wounds.” You tell him in Low Gothic. “Do you understand?”

“...Y-yearsh.” The child responds. It is mispronounced, but you believe he is trying to say Yes in Low Gothic. It seems he is not completely familiar with the language.

You nod. “Good. Uriel, check their wounds. See if the adult is still alive.”

“Do not fear us, child. We are here to help.” Uriel reassures him, approaching once again. This time, the child does not raise his sword at him and allows him to examine his companion. Uriel retrieves the necessary tools and medicine from his Exsanguinator and begins working away on the unconscious adult. As he works, you notice the child's sword is stained green. The wounded man's armor also appears to be stained green in a pattern reminiscent of bloodsplatter.

Boxers only have ten or about so seconds of unconciousness. This amount is relatively safe, but useless for story purposes. In a situation like ours you would want at least several minutes of unconciousness, and that's a good way to make a vegetable out of a human.

Also, long-career boxers often do have fucked up brains, and soccer players too. The minor damage they take tends to accumulate over time

“Set up a perimeter, make sure whatever attacked them isn't close by.” You order. The others nod and move out, clearing the immediate area and setting up a defensive perimeter. Meanwhile, you crouch down and speak with the kid, intending to find out what happened.

“How many more of you were there? What attacked you?”

“Just ush, we were attaacked climing zah montain by...by...” He seems to be searching for the right word to use in Low Gothic. Finally, he settles for whatever the equivalent in the native language is, leaving you unsure what he's trying to say.”

“Do you mean orks?” You ask, the green blood on his sword making you wonder.

He seems to recognize the term and shakes his head. “Noh, not orks.” He repeats the native word for whatever attacked them, leaving you clueless as to what attacked them.

“Uriel, could you tell what attacked them by analyzing the bloodstains?” You ask.

“Given time, yes. However, it will take me about a day to analyze it. Whatever it was may be gone by then.”

“Child, would you be able to show us where you were attacked?”

Uriel finishes patching the wounded adult's wounds and bandages the cut on the child's side. Once finished, you start giving orders.

“Sepheram, Avitus, we'll go examine the attack site and see what we can find. Akriel, Tacitus, head back to the base and grab a Landspeeder then meet up with us. The rest of you bring this man back to the fortress and make sure the autodefenses are on.”

There is a collective “Yes sir” from the others as they all set out to follow your orders. The child gestures for you to follow him, and leads the way through the bushes and down the mountain.

------------
A while later, you arrive at the site of the attack. The snow here is stained red with blood, and you see two bodies lying lifeless in the snow. They are human in shape, but twisted in form. One has ghastly pale skin and large green boils scattered across it's body. The other has visible green veins running all across it's body, and jagged teeth that can be seen protruding from it's underbite. The pale one appears to have been killed by being stabbed through the heart and is covered in red blood, presumably killed by the adult the child was dragging with him. The other has multiple cuts on it's body, though the fatal blow seems to have been delivered by a stab through the back and into it's gut, presumably the child's doing, and is bleeding green blood.

“Mutants.” Sepheran says, his voice tinged with disgust. “They have some nerve living this close to an Astartes fortress-monastery.”

“Mu-tants.” The child says, finally recognizing that word as the one he was looking for earlier.

“Brothers, look here.” Avitus calls out, drawing you over to a trail of red blood leading away from the site. “It appears they have left a trail back to their hideout.”

You activate your helmet's vox, calling Akriel and Tacitus. “Akriel, what's your status?”

“We are preparing to leave now, brother.”

“Good. Bring flame weapons with you, it appears the civilians' attackers were mutants. There will likely be more of them.”

“We shall bring them with us, brother Antarius.”

With the others advised on the situation, you take a moment to examine the mutants. They are wearing primitive armor and carrying primitive weapons, but appear to be significantly stronger than the average human. Certainly not as strong as an Astartes, but still. Beyond their primitive weapons, you notice one of them has pointed fingernails which may have been used as claws. You expect the other mutants will employ both natural and primitive weapons, neither of which are a threat to you or your brothers.

“Child, can you tell us how many there were?”

He thinks for a moment. “Tehn. Probaly many more aht their caump.”

“That's ten too many.” Sepheran comments, clearly ready to go and purge the offending mutants.

“We shall correct that in time, once the others arrive with the Landspeeder.”

--------
A while later, Tacitus and Akriel come flying in on the Landspeeder. Tacitus is equipped with a Heavy Flamer, while Akriel carries a simple Flamer. Avitus forgoes a Flamer in favor of his two Lightning Claws, while Sepheran accepts a Hand Flamer for use along with his Crozius Arcanum, a chaplain's badge of office which functions as a Power Mace. You stick to the Hand Flamer you obtained on Fumarius IV, and accept three bolter magazines of Inferno Bolts.

>3 Inferno Bolt magazines added (28 rounds each. Targets shot will catch fire)

“Did you find a way to track them down?” Akriel asks.

“They appear to have left a blood trail. We shall follow it and see where it leads us.”
>>
>>41896464
---------
You and your brothers follow the trail of blood, the civilian child staying behind. Only two can fit in the Landspeeder, so they proceed at an equal pace with you and the others on foot. Finally, you see smoke rising up ahead, most likely from a large campfire.

“We shall scout them out and call for you when we're ready to strike.” You inform those on the Landspeeder. The child stays back with them, while you, Avitus, and Sepheram creep up ahead to spy on the camp.

You see at least thirty mutants in the camp. There are several tents made from some native beast's hide, and a large fire burning in the center of camp. The mutants appear to be drinking and celebrating by the fire, overseen by a particularly large and grotesque mutant sitting on what appears to be some sort of throne stationed by the fire. One mutant is lying tied upside down on a pole by the fire, his gut split open for what you can only assume was some transgression. All of them appear to be equipped with only primitive or natural weapons and armor, you doubt any of them will pose a serious threat. The one sitting on the primitive throne, however, is particularly large. If any of the mutants here could pose a threat, it would be him.

“These mutants are no threat to us. We need only make sure that none escape.” Sepheran comments in a hushed tone. “How shall we proceed?”

You load your Inferno Bolts and order everyone to circle around the camp. Once everyone's ready, the Landspeeder will charge in and purge the mutants with bolt and fire.

"Is everyone in position?"

"Yes, brother."

"Good, then on my mark. Three...Two...One...Now!"

With lightning speed, the Landspeeder flies into the center of camp, Heavy Bolter firing off into the crowds while Tacitus leans out the side and sets the camp aflame with his Heavy Flamer. The mutants are caught completely off guard, and most of the ones sitting by the fire get blown apart as a result. Tacitus turns his Heavy Flamer towards the leader, engulfing him in flaming promethium.

As this happens, you and the others begin pushing into the camp, picking off stragglers and those that try to run away. None get past you or your brothers. All seems to be going according to plan, until Tacitus ceases fire.

The leader is surrounded by a transparent sphere of force, protecting him from the fire. The sphere disappears, and with a snarl the mutant leader shouts out something in the native tongue, his voice deep and guttural like a beast.

"Psyker!" You shout out, realizing the leader poses much more of a threat than you anticipated.

Though with the Lamenters being shat on every week I'd hope hey'd say "this shit isn't quite working boys, how about we do things in a way that don't dick us for a change?"

I'm not expert on the subject, but Lamenters seem careful enough to me. Not everyone can complete a 300 year penitent crusade and leave more than a shipn full of marines.

We just have to be careful, and cherish every marine we have, if you know what I mean.

"Landspeeder unit, focus fire on the psyker!" You command, turning your bolter on the mutant leader. The mutant throws up another shield just before Landspeeder's Heavy Bolter rains down upon the mutant witch and Tacitus bathes it in holy promethium. You focus fire on the leader as well, until there is a loud crack and the mutant's pained screams echo out as bolt and fire purge it in the Emperor's name.

Meanwhile, Avitus and Sepheran continue to purge the rest of the mutant gang, allowing none to escape. With the leader dealt with, you and the Landspeeder unit join them, until the entire camp is ablaze and not a single mutant remains breathing.

"Area clear. No surviving mutants remain."

You begin to regroup and exit the camp when you find the child watching from behind one of the trees, awestruck by your work. The entire camp burns behind you, and none of you so much as suffered a single scratch.

"Well, the mutants have been dealt with. Now what should we do with the child and his companion once he wakes?" Avitus asks.

[Child]
>Consider him for recruitment
>Recruit him as a chapter serf
>Send him back down the mountain to tell others that you are here
>Other

[Adult]
>Recruit him as a chapter serf
>Send him down the mountain to inform others of your return
>Other

They were only on crusade for 100 years, though that's still impressive.

As for how flexible they are with tactics and the codex, it has bee noted that they are pretty flexible in how they function, since they were a fleet based chapter and had no one to rely on besides themselves for the most part.

>[Child]
>[Adult]

talk to the pair to understand their situation, if they are interested the child may join and be evaluated for recruitment, but the adult still has to prove his worth
>>
Oh yeah, and forgot.

>1 Inferno round magazine spent. 2 remaining.
>>
>>41898088
They are free to go, let them spread word of our return.
Let the boy know we are looking for recruits. If he is tough enough he will live to come into age anyways.
>>
Rolled 6, 8, 9 = 23 (3d10)

>>41898088
Confirm who they are and their relation to each other.
>Send him back down the mountain to tell others that you are here

>Ask if he can be an interpreter or something
>>
>>41898160
this sounds acceptable, make take their bloodworks so we know if this world is heavily mutated and shit
>>
>>41898088
talk to 'em. Spreading word would be good but we can always use some locals and helpers.

Also he can speak the local language and low gothic so he could be a helpful little guy if he wants to be.

>If he is tough enough he will live to come into age anyways.
Space marines actually start recruitment between the age of 10-14. Any older and the gene seed won't take. Usually chapters will have a test of some sort to decide which aspirants are worthy, and even after that some might not be compatible with the gene seed or might die during the surgery. I don't think it's ever mentioned what the Lamenters test for aspirants is, but in the Chapter Master game their default test is the Challenge, where an unarmored and unarmed marine fights the armed and armored aspirant in single combat (the marine always wins) to see how strong and tenacious they are, so I'll go with that unless you guys want to change it.
>>
Now that we choose a feudal world as our home, I really regret not being a Vanguard Veteran instead.
>>
>>41898313
Well we're a spess marine. We can still beat normal human being's asses.
>>
>>41898292
that's a little bit too risky for our first admirer.
>>
>>41898292
did the other two children we pick up have any aptitude?
>>
>>41898292
Yes that sounds Lamentery enough, and best suited for feudal worlders. Apprenticeship is also acceptable, like a Knight-Squire kinda thing.

>>41898331
I'm not worried about humans besting us, it's just a matter of principle. Also a close combatant is easier understood and respected by Feudal worlders than a marksman.
>>
>>41898088
Consider the child for recruitment, offer the man serfdom
>>
>>41898088
"We shall speak to them later and decide. For now, let us return to the fortress monastery and continue repairs."

With that, everyone begins to make their way towards the fortress monastery once more. You are a few steps away when you look back and notice the child still standing their, staring awestruck at the burning camp you've left behind.

"Come along child, it's time to go back and check on your companion."

The child snaps out of it and hurries to follow after you. With that, you start the journey back to the fortress monastery, columns of black smoke rising high into the air behind you.

Alright, calling it a night here folks. HSQ will be tomorrow and might be a short thread since classes start again Monday. I should be running Lamenters Quest again either Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll see. Keep an eye on the twitter just in case something changes though.

I'll stick around to answer questions if anyone's got them. Thanks for playing, hope you all had fun.
>>
>>41898537
So we have seniority here? Are we the commanding officer?
>>
>>41898313
You're a veteran, so you're still pretty damn capable in melee. Not as capable as a vanguard veteran, but at least as capable as the average tactical or assault marine.
>>41898413
>Also a close combatant is easier understood and respected by Feudal worlders than a marksman.
The inquisitor and planetary governor mentioned the planet's populace has black powder guns. They're still fairly new, but they know what guns are.
>>41898402
The only fighting you've really seen them do is tossing grenades out of the Trukk while you were rushing to grab a ship off Fumarius IV. There's a boy and a girl though, and only males are compatible with the gene seed.
>>41898587
You're the senior marine here, Avitus being a close second. So far they've been listening to you, since you're both the oldest and the one who saved their lives.
>>41898374
Sad part is, all that's actually really tame compared to some chapters. If I remember right, Blood Angels make their aspirants cross a radioactive wasteland to get to their fortress monastery, then battle other aspirants to prove themselves, then have to both be compatible with the gene seed and survive the resulting surgery, and then they're given some of the blood of Sanguinius and locked into these iron coffins where they sit until the blood takes effect and hopefully they don't go insane in the process.
>>
>>41898537
Thanks for running. Didn't topple the "assault the warboss with a hail of Kraken rounds, and run the trukk filled with grenades into him" adventure we started with.
But we have to start somewhere.
>>
>>41898708
I'm also just glad to see that you didn't abandon the quest yet.
>>
Regarding space marine recruitment, here's an article about it and all the gene seed implants and what they do for those not very familiar with 40k.

>>
>>41898687
Were the Blood Angels so harsh when their numbers got reduced to thirty-something?
>>
>>41898979
Don't think their numbers have ever dropped that low. They're a first founding chapter, so I imagine if their numbers ever fell that low there'd be a low of alarms going off amongst the higher ups in the Imperium and they'd start kicking recruitment into overdrive.
>>
>>41899323
I seem to recall most of them being eaten by a space hulk leaving only 50 left.
>>
>>41899473
Yeah their numbers were really thinned down when they assaulted the Black Legion during one of Abby's crusades, near total extermination is a scenario the Blood Angels are not unfamiliar with, unfortunately.
>>
>>41899646
If only their sparkling blinded the enemy.
