You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

The cold night air sends shivers down your spine as you step out onto the parapet of the castle's northern wall, where the odd Reiklander girl Von Hess had invited you to meet her. Thankfully, your tux's insulating properties, which were a suffocating nuisance inside, proved to be some worth out here, keeping you somewhat warm. You're kind of glad you told Tarin to stay back. That skimpy dress she was wearing would have never survived the elements.

However, once you reach the top, you see nobody there. Hell, you don't think you even see any guards posted. It was just you, the cold night air, and this empty wall.

You decide to wait for a few minutes. Despite what you may think about Reiklanders, you assumed they were still human, and humans were always consistently late. Besides, you didn't see anybody else around, so it didn't appear to be an ambush of any sort. You sigh and lean against the parapet, and realize that it's overlooking the capital city below. The capital of Breton wasn't as large or metropolitan as any of the Tilean cities, but it was no less grand in the night. Lights of all colors illuminated the city below, while the stars and moon glittered above.

"Enjoying ze view?"

You whip your head to the left to see Hess sitting casually on the parapet, her legs swinging back and forth like a schoolgirl as they hang over the edge.

"How the heck did you get there?" You blink in surprise. "I never even heard you."

"Ha, I vas valking here all of ze grace of an elephant." Hess chuckles. " You vere so enamored with the sight you didn't notice me at all!"

"I suppose." You frown.

"But I don't blame you." Hess' gaze returns to the city below. "It IS a rather beautiful sight."

"So, what's Reikland like?" You ask, looking down at the city. "From what I heard, it's all concrete and steel there."

"Ah, vell, the cities are, at least." Hess nods. "Dreadfully dull, I agree. Not even the old castles have ze same... grandness to them."

"Weren't they built in the same era as this one?" You look her her curiously. "Why would they be different?"

"Well, there vas a purge of everything considered 'extravagant', many years ago." Hess finally frowns for the first time. "I remember when the servants came and took everything away that vas deemed unsuitable."

"Sounds rough." You nod.

"Oh yes, Mother vas furious. Many family heirlooms were lost." Hess nods. "But zat is how Reikland is. Society needs rules, and without society, zere is chaos."

"That sounds kinda dumb." You say bluntly.

"Which is why I am absolutely intrigued with Tilea." Hess turns leans in towards you with a criticizing eye. "I have been told Tileans were nothing but brutish barbarians, yet how is it zat we have never conquered them? Zere is a missing piece somewhere, which is why I vanted to talk to you."

"So that's why you're so interested in us?" You frown. "But why me in particular?"

"Vell..." Hess smiles awkwardly. "You seemed to be ze easiest to approach. The others seemed to be too old or too threatening, ja?"

"So you picked me because I seemed like the meekest one?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Do not take zat as an offense!" Hess says quickly. "You were just the most... approachable? Diplomatic? I am no sure how to say it."

"Ah, so you really did want to just talk." You sigh in relief.

"I'd never do that!" You say, horrified.

This.

Hess, your side uses brain-piloted mechs, and legions of undead zombies. The brain-piloted mechs are... odd, but the zombies plant y'all squarely in "bad people who need to learn more about freedom and individual rights" territory.

Still, it's possible both societies could get along. After the Reiklanders are served a heapin' helpin' of FREEDOM, that is!

"I suppose stranger things have happened." You shrug. "But, well, there might be issues. Like, did you know your army uses the dead as soldiers?"

Hess stays silent, her back turned to you as she gazes at the glittering expanse beyond.

"It used to be, that they were to be sued for menial labor. Duties that were deemed too lowly or dangerous for regular people to work." Hess says quietly. "After all, the military was the priority. If we could minimize the work force, we could maximize our army."

"But it just wasn't enough, was it?" You narrow your eyes.

"Mmmmm, not for General Strasse." Hess still keeps her back turned to you. "He was the one who figured out how to turn the drones into soldiers. He convinced the Party that they would give us the edge over Tilea."

"And do you agree with that?" You ask.

"It's not my preferred method of fighting, but if it brings victory, then who am I to complain?" Hess spins on her heel, a dangerous move to do on her position atop the ramparts. "Hey, how about we talk about something a little bleak, ja?"

It's beautiful back home. Nature, fellowship with other humans, wild animals to hunt and be hunted by. Water from streams instead of city pumps, law from sheriffs and deputies instead of the Hauptamt SS-Gericht. A man could stand on the edge of a cliff and look out, just like Roy's doing right now... and truly know what it means to be free as the eagles who circle overhead. She's probably never heard of anything like it.

Just don't go full country-boy on her.

"Ha, well, I'm probably the closest you can find to a 'Tilean barbarian', actually." You laugh as you pace along the wall alongside Hess. "I grew up in Tilea's northern mountains. None of these fancy castles or cities up there. Just you, nature, and whatever living you could scrape out of it."

"Sounds tough." Hess frowns. "Why vould anybody vant to live in such a place?"

"Well, it's dangerous, but also beautiful. Has it's perks, too." You say with nostalgia. Things are a lot simpler up there. You need food? Go out and hunt for it and hope you don't get eaten instead. Half the houses in the areas didn't even have running water, so it was often a daily chore to bring it back from rivers or wells. Practically no law up there except the ones you enforce yourselves. Simple and harsh."

"Hm..." Hess pauses to think on it.

"And like I said, beautiful too." You point out to the nighttime view. "Sometimes, we'd sneak out at night and climb up one of the cliff faces to see the view. The mountains are so high up, you can practically see all of Tilea. And the stars, too. Barely any lights up there, so you can see EVERYTHING."

"vait, these aren't all the stars?" Hess gasps as she looks up at the sky.

"Not even!" You laugh. "Can't be more than a couple dozen up there! When you see the REAL sky it's just... well... it's something you need to see for yourself."

"Ahhhh..." Hess says absentmindedly. "Maybe if ve both survive this war, you could show me sometime?"

"Depends on how the war ends." You point out.

"True, true." Hess nods. She then sits back down on the rampart, facing in this time as she stretches her legs across the walkway. "Vell, it's your turn now.!"

Merc, if you've reached the point where you can't keep track of all the characters in your wheelhouse, I think that means it's time to cull the herd and pull a George RR Martin.

She's really young to have suffered an injury like that, and she seems to be from a well-to-do family so it probably wasn't from a street fight or domestic accident.

>Have you already sacrificed a little bit of yourself for your country?

>Will they send you back to the front lines, even after such a sacrifice? How much does Reikland expect you to give? Every little bit, until death, and then after death... well, we've already discussed the shambling horde.

>In Tilea, we honor those who have sacrificed for our nation. Is this diplomatic assignment an honor for you, Von Hess, or are they just trying to put you somewhere where their stooges can keep a sharp eye on you?

Can we make Tarin promise not to hurt Hess' other eye if we take her in as a Political Refugee?

A glorious death in battle? Where perhaps, Bannon redeems himself, sacrificing his own unit to buy time to escape for child refugees and grandmothers? And where, most importantly, no prospective waifus were harmed in the making of this battle? I'm cool with that.

Bannon is indecisive but has been a good guy, otherwise. He's nowhere near as bad as the original Bannon was.

Damn if he didn't completely redeem himself in that game, though.

"What's the deal with that Gregor guy?" You ask. "He always looks to be in an unpleasant mood."

"Like he's has a cannon shell up his behind?" Hess giggles.

"More like the entire damn cannon itself." You remark.

That gets Hess bursting out in laughter, her eyepatch flapping slightly in the breeze as her head tilts back. You're almost afraid she'd fall off but she maintains her balance.

"Ah, Gregor. I guess you can say he is my chaperone." Hess remarks. "Very stiff and unyielding. He is a great soldier, but a terrible conversational partner."

"Doesn't seem to like Tileans too much." You say.

"Vell, he did lose many ancestor in previous wars..." Hess explains. "His kind are not the type to forget easily."

"I figured." You groan.

"Well, he's not THAT ba-" Hess' mouth immediately clamp shut and her eye darts below, where you follow her gaze and see the aforementioned Gregor, flanked by a pair of hulking bodyguards as they prowled the courtyard, obviously in search mode.

"Mein gott!" Hess groans as she checks her watch. "How did so much time pass already! He must have noticed by absence!"

"Is he that controlling?" You ask.

"You do not understand." Hess bites her lip."If he catches me outside of the party, or vorse, vith you, I vould be severely reprimanded."

Sounds like a plan. After all, we need to preserve all the babes. Our Waifu Hangar has many open bays!

If Bannon is out, would Rock take over as commander? He seems the logical choice, even if I think he would be kinda against it himself. He's a good leader, but a better coordinator/supporting voice. So, maybe someone new would be transferred in to take command of the squad?

Normally, I'd be all for a new babe being transferred in, but adding your Commanding Officer to your harem while retaining your VT driver in that same harem is stretching the limits of "plausible romantic entanglement"!

"All right, I'll try to get you back into the party. He'll never know the difference." You assure her.

"You would?" Hess blinks.

"Well, I guess this situation is also partly my fault, if you think about it." You explain lamely.

"I guess you are right about that." Hess chuckles. "But vat do we do? Gregor and his men have complete control of ze courtyard."

You survey the surrounding area. Currently, you were up on top of the north wall, which Gregor and his goons thankfully did not seem to think of checking yet. Down below, Gregor and about five his men were patrolling the courtyard, trying to look for their wayward princess. Thankfully for you, though, it was dark, and there were numerous statues, hedges, and other decorations to give you ample cover. Directly across was the main keep, where you could see the festivities through one of the large windows.

Upon hearing a flapping sound, you look up to see a rope tied to a pole mounted on the rampart and strung across the courtyard to the keep, with numerous banners hanging from it.

"Hess, ever went rock climbing before?" You ask, looking up at the rope.

"Not exactly." Hess frowns. "I undervent the mandatory physical training, though."

"That's good enough." You nod. "So what we're going to do is grab onto this rope, and then we'll pull ourselves along it to the keep. As long as Gregor and his guys don't look directly up, it'll be free and clear for us!"

"A-are you sure about this?" Hess bites her lip. "I already lost one eye. I'm not looking forvard losing the other."

"Trust me, we can make it." You say, grabbing onto the rope and pulling it down. "Just like basic. Grab on and pull yourself along one hand at a time."

"I... I suppose." Hess says as she reluctantly grabs the rope with her gloved hand.

You then grab the rope with both hands and pull your body up enough so you can wrap your legs around the rope, further securing yourself. You see Hess do the same, though having a bit more trouble due to her skirt.

"Not. A. Word." Hess grumbles.

"Of course." You grin as you slowly begin shuffling down the rope.

Your initial progress seems to be okay, as you make rather good time crossing the gap as you concentrate putting one hand over the other while your legs focus on keeping your stability. Behind you, Hess lags a bit behind, but manages to stay on. Unfortunately, a rather powerful gust of air blows along, and Hess gives a little yelp when her hands lose their grip.

"Hess!" You hiss. "Are you okay?"

"Yes." Hess replies. You crane your head to check, and see Hess hanging onto the rope by her legs. Her hair was hanging down, as wall as her skir-

"Pervert!" Hess hisses as she pulls a glove off of her hand and tosses it right into your face.

"Sorry! I was just checking!" You try to assure her.

"Hey, did you hear something?" You hear one of the soldiers says below.

"No. Must be imagining things." Another soldier replies.

"Could've sworn I did..."

Both you and Hess promptly shut up.

Ok then, here's what we've found out so far:
>Reik government enacted a purge or all 'extravagant' things, likely to sell off to support their economy.
>Reikland has a large amount of propaganda "including how Tileans are barbarians"
>Corpse solders are from 'drones'. Likely slave labour or work camps for undesirable people.
>Deathshead is still being a cunt
>Hess is intrigued by the outer world.
>Gregor is here to act as a 'chaperone' for Hess
>Hess is under curfew

As such, Hess is a good girl, she's just on the wrong side of the fence. As such, she is a potential candidate for defection to our side.

Fortunately, Hess is able to regain her handhold on the rope as she leverages her torso up with her legs.

"You good?" You ask.

"Yeah." Hess sighs in relief.

The two of you continue on slow and steady. Every so often you would crane your head downwards to check on Gregor's goons, but they're none the wiser. After a few excruciatingly long minutes, you reach the end of the rope, which terminates on the roof o the keep. You slowly lower yourself off the rope, and your feet thankfully meet solid stone. You then help Hess down, putting you hands on her waist to help guide her feet to solid footing. You then return her discarded glove.

"Ah, thank you for zat." Hess says as she brushes herself off and puts her glove back on. "Erm, sorry about that earlier thing. It was habit."

"I'm sure it was."

"Well, that was an interesting way to get back to the party." You hear a voice behind you.

DAILY REMINDER THAT THE 76MM M1 IS FAR SUPERIO TO THE 75MM M3 IN REGARDS TO AP PERFORMANCE.

Isn't it though?

Knowing merc it's likely going to end up with us having to duel Gregor to the death for reasons.

And then he unveils the upgrades that General Strauss gave him.
>>
>>41904544
I thought Gregor didn't like the science division?
>>
>>41904521
Speaking of M3s, albeit of a different sort, I read something interesting about the M3 Grant today. In its first battles the units containing them lost nearly every tank they had. Of course, they ran into a major German offensive when they were the only ones there.
>>
>>41904558
Who said he got the upgrades willingly?

"Oh, hi there, Tarin!" You grin as you turn to face her, completely not surprised she had somehow figured out where you would be at. "I believe you've seen Hess before. Hess, this is my driver, Tarin."

"Ah, a pleasure." Hess smiles as she holds her hand out.

Tarin clearly pauses for a moment before returning the handshake.

"It's an honor, I guess." Tarin says casually, thou could clearly see her eyes regarding the Reiklander girl with suspicion.

"Anyways, I thank you for your assistance, Roy Powers." Hess returns her attention to you. "If we do not cross paths again, may we see each other on the field of battle!"

"Haha, as friends, right?"

"Oh, don't get me wrong. If we meet on the battlefield, I will treat you as an enemy, and I hope respect me enough to do the same!" Hess winks with her one good eye. "Until next time!"

With that, Hess saunters off with that strut all nobles were known for.

"I hope you learned something useful." Tarin says as she guides you to the stairs.

>I did. Let's get back with the others.

"How about we stay up here for a bit? Need to catch my breath, anyways." You suggest.

"I suppose there's reason not to." Tarin shrugs.

The both of you spend the next few minute sin silence as you stand on the roof, looking up at the night sky.

"Not a lot of stars here either, huh?" Tarin observes.

"Yeah, there's a city right under the castle so there's still lots of light pollution, even in a country like this." You say.

"That's a pity. Would've like to see the full sky at least once since basic." Tarin sighs.

"Well, there's one place for sure we can do that." You grin.

"You really think we'll ever have an opportunity to go home?" Tarin lowers her head to face you.

"Of course!" You smile brightly. "No reason that we can't! Once this whole thing is over, we'll go back and show everybody how much we've grown!"

"Ha, I don't think we've grown that much." Tarin smiles.

"Says you." You grunt. "We're practically war heroes now! We'll be given a heroes welcome, accordingly!"

"And then we can rough up some Drachnam raiders?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"I don't see why not."

"Well then, I'll keep you to that promise, then." Tarin smiles and holds her hand out. "How about one last dance?"

"I'd love to." You return the smile and take Tarin's hand.
