/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are Shane Morris. You are a wizard, and you are about to fight people for sport.

Not exactly in a gladiator slave fighting sort of way, you guess its more like fencing, but with magic so its cooler.

You see one of the older boys get thrown 10 meters with his hair on fire.

Maybe 'cooler' isn't the word. More dangerous definitely.

You are trying to join the dueling club. Only five people from each year can be chosen, and there are way more than five second years down on the quidditch pitch with you right now. Between your four friends Alex, Jenny, Linus and Sam, your roommate Lom, and a bunch of Linus' friends, you're looking at about 12 people fighting for 5 slots.

So basically a its looking like some kind of tournament to get into the club.

Who do you think you could take in the first round?

>One of your friends [specify]
>Lom
>One of the randoms

This quest is based on this system; http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Tabletop_RPG

You can find all the previous threads here http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Hogwarts%20Muggleborn%20Quest

If you want to follow the quest going forward you can follow @Tiddlybum_HE on twitter where I'll announce all the new threads.

Remember that you have one free reroll per session, something tells me you'll need it this time around.

Also since we hit second year we'll be voting on what attribute for Shane to increase. I'll give more info next post.
>>
Int and Power are the most valuable options for Charms, and spellcasting in general. Power gives more health, Int knocks ten hours per point off of studying, IIRC. But they both give +1 to Charms and Dark Arts spells.
I vote for Int.
Also, did we ever finish practicing the body bind curse? IIRC we can cast it without rolling if we finished it. Should be a minimum of 7, but I don't have the spells pdf handy.

You're gonna try your luck with a random. When Professor Morse calls for the second years to find someone to fight in their first match you step up to one of the mirror club kids.

It's double elimination, so you can loose once and still be in the running, but you wanna try not to loose if you can.

Looking out into the crowd the Professor picks you out just like she did on your first day.

“Morris, Bracken. You first.”

You both step into the ring and bow.

>Roll 2d10

For selecting a stat to increase you can choose Power (health and casting), Spirit (perks, mental fortitude and persuasion), Finesse (dodging, potions and flying) or Intelligence (studying, casting, grades)

You can see what you already have in the character sheet before, and you can look at perks in the pdfs linked at the beginning of the thread. I'll call a vote next post after everyone has had some time to decide.
>>
>>41917661
Cool. So if the other Second years haven't been taught the shield charm yet, that's a massive advantage. We should be able to land a body bind on turn one, and block anything they can dish out.
Wow, Shane is actually a competent spellcaster and a serious combatant. Weird.

Here's some dice.
>>
The other kid is really fast. Or maybe you're just really slow. He's got you off balance from the get go with hexes and jinxes.

You block the first few and then when he backs off, realizing he can't get through your shield, you body bind him. First round goes to you, and you can see even some third years looking surprised. Professor Morse just smiles, declares you the winner and chooses the next combatants.

Lom gets his first loss right off the bat, almost embarrassingly so. So does Jenny. Your other friends all win their matches. Sam's in particular is actually really close, it looks like both of them have fought before, and the other kid gives him a hard run for his money.

Now it's back to you. Another random. You could try the same approach as before, or mix it up.

Either way you step into the arena and bow.

>>41918181
It would take to much time to roll for shields. That rule is there to prevent an exploit where no one of your level can hit you except for like a 10% chance if you buff wards and just passive cast. It became a blanket rule at some point in development. No reason to really enforce it here unless you start munchkining hard.

You're slow again, and your opponent gets one up on you. They throw out a tooth growing jinx that you take the brunt of as you cast out Lumos, you blind them for a second, and then throw your body bind.

But they manage to dodge. They regain their footing and throw out another jinx.

You throw out a ward in time to stop the jinx, and your opponent pokes at your shield hoping to break it. After a few casts they get in a rhythm and with some timing, you manage to break the ward and cast your body bind curse.

They go down and you get another victory.

Lom looses his second match and goes to the side of the pitch to watch the rest of the matches from a distance.

Linus looses to Jenny but he's still got a chance to come back. Sam beats Alex, and Alex goes on to loose another match in the losers bracket against Sam's first opponent. Alex is out, but doesn't seem as beat up about it as Lom does. He's right in the thick of the crowd watching the rest of the matches with a small smile.

You're up again. Against Jenny this time. The fact that she's won all of her matches with her arm still in that sling is a bit concerning, you have a feeling she might actually be able to beat you if you play this wrong.

You both bow to each other. Once again you came out behind and she starts off her volley of spells.

How do you react?

You throw up a ward and Jenny tests it with an unfamiliar spell. Then she stops to circle. She's not over extending like your other opponents have so far.

You know she can't cast wards yet, and you know she'd probably have trouble dodging with her arm wrapped up. You could try to press her and see if you can land a lucky hit, or you could try something clever. Though you don't really know what you would try, you're in an empty field.

You try throwing a few spells, and as you expected her reactions aren't great. She almost falls over trying to dodge, before unloading a salvo of hexes back at you. You throw up the ward and feel the magic shudder as her spells collide.

You change tacks and start advancing on her, trying to push her clear of the arena with your shield. You get about half way to the edge with her failing to fight you off before she throws herself against your shield and then slides to the right Putting her inside your shield. Luckily she's also off balance, and her bad arm is toward you. She tries to spin, but you bind her before she can make a full turn.

The fight goes to you. You dispel the curse and help her up.

“Good fight Shane.”

“Probably. You've still got a chance to make it, do just like that and you'll make it through.”

“We'll have another match in the finals. After I beat Sam and the others.”

“Go get'em.”

The next match is Linus against that random Gryffindor that's been doing almost as well as you and Jenny. And sure enough he beats Linus, putting him out of the running The kid then goes on to beat another random. That kid made top five though. So you guess everyone still in is getting into the club, you, the Gryffindor, the Hufflepuff he just beat, Jenny and Sam. Now you're just fighting over bragging rights.

Jenny beats out Sam, sending him to fight his first opponent again. Once again the fight is really good. You almost feel like the gladiator reference might be accurate, if only for these two, it's like they're trying to put on a show, and they do a damn good job of it.

In the end the Gryffindor goes end over end into the dirt and Sam wins.

Now its your turn again. You can feel the fatigue starting to set in from doing this basically all afternoon. And you're up against Sam this time.

You bow, and in familiar fashion, your opponent is off like a flash.

He backs off, watching you intently. Then he starts talking.

“Man, wards are boring. Fight me like you mean it, come on!”

You realize pretty quickly he isn't talking as much to you as to the crowd, and a chorus of boos come up from the crowd, who a few hours ago, were impressed that you could even cast a ward at all.

You drop your ward and Sam tries to hit you in the opening, but you throw out a cluster of spells to keep him dodging and then bring up your ward again.

“Why would I drop my ward? So I can loose? Maybe if you spent more time studying you'd know how to cast one too, and you could fight me on my terms instead of making me come down to yours.”

Sam seems unfazed, and honestly so does most of the crowd. Some of them snicker, and some of the other mirror club kids are openly laughing.

You try poking with hexes a few more times with your ward up between. Then, on the fourth time you're going to drop your ward, you see Sam's hand come up early, he predicted you, and you can't get the ward back up in time. You sail through the air, ass over end, and land in the dirt outside the arena.

You lost, maybe a bit to confident in your wards, or maybe just a bit too slow. Either way you'll have to try harder next time.

And next time is now. Your next opponent is Jenny again, you still have a chance to win this.

You bow and Jenny is off like a flash, already dropping spells.

Just like that you're out of the tournament, two losses in a row. Luckily though, you're in the club, and you look to see your friends beaming at you.

You've got some time before the final match between Jenny and Sam.

Hey TB, how are you picking our actions? Just the first comment?
>>
>>41921055
Majority if there is one, otherwise I try to blend things together as best I can. Open ended stuff like fighting is hard because more people tend to vote and there tends to be less of a consensus. Plus trying to do stuff with the feel I have for Shane as a character.
>>
If we want to turn into a dodger we need to actually invest in Finesse.
for those interested
Dodging is rolled Power + Finesse + DADA + Roll
Defense is what we're better statted for since we actually know a Ward spell and we can counterspell which is a opposed roll of Intelligence + Power + Skill (Charm, Transfigurations, Dark arts.) + Roll + Situational modifiers.
>>
>>41921119
Just asking because there was a tie between dodging and warding.
>>
>>41921155
I counted 1 ward, 1 counterspell and 2 dodges. Honestly dodging would have probably worked better but Jenny rolled 2 10s in a row on my end.
>>
>>41921198
My bad, to help with combat maybe some pre determined actions would be better so we can achieve consensus faster/more often.
>>
You go over to check on Lom who is still on the side of the pitch alone.

“Oh, hey Shane.” He says as you approach, wiping his eyes. “You were doing pretty well. Did you win?”

“No, I got knocked out by Sam and Jenny one after the other. They're both really tough.”

He picks at his ill fitting clothes a bit before answering, and when he does answer, its halting, like he's picking his words carefully.

“A month after summer started my mom told me she was pregnant.”

“I... that sounds great but...”

“They moved me out of my room to make room for the baby, and gave me the servant's quarters. Then they sold all of my clothes and bought me hand me downs instead to get more money.”

“I mean it sounds like they're just getting ready for a new baby.”

“Shane. You don't understand. I backed out on the Cabal. They're replacing me. They don't want me anymore. When my brother or sister is born, they'll be the heir to the Bordes and I'll just be left on my own.”

Lom I did the right thing and lost my parents too. Mine were taken from me because they cared too much about ME, yours threw you away because they care too much about themselves. Sometimes life knocks us down, If we don't get back up and make the best of what we're given, we'll simply never get back up. It hurts BELIVE me I know, but what's done is done. Would you have sacrificed Jenny to be their son? Even knowing what you know now?
>>
“If they're willing to toss you aside like this then they were only going to use you. They're not worth it. All they do is hold you back. You can be amazing Lom, do something amazing, be so much more than them that they'll want you back, be so great you won't need them anymore.”

All at once you see rage fill him.

“Fuck you, Shane! I thought someone like you might understand, what its like to loose your parents. You fucking degenerate mudblood.” He runs off to the castle.

You feel insulted, but far more you feel a sense of loss. Like Lom might be beyond you saving now. He's gonna have to figure it out on his own.

You return to watch the final match a bit on edge. That talk made you uncomfortable.

More coming
>>
The fight almost puts it out of your head though. Jenny and Sam are clearly the best fighters in your year. Jenny is really good at reading people, and you get the feeling that she might really be unstoppable with that arm in working order.

Sam is just a natural, the way he dodges, the force behind his spells, he's like an animal.

In the end Sam edges toward Jenny's bad side for a finishing blow, but Jenny spins around entirely the other way and fires a spell that knocks him out cold.

That's it. Jenny won. There's a fair bit of fan fare, and Morse cuts it off to declare the winner officially and give Ravenclaw 20 house points.

The top five of each year are given their places in the dueling club and you're given a schedule.

As you head back to the common room Jenny catches you.

Well, yeah. Everyone decided that calling his parents shitty was a good idea, apparently forgetting that he's a twelve year old, so "fuck yo parents, they suck" isn't really something he'd want to hear.
