Your name is Leo. You are the recently appointed mayor of a small town called Whiteport, and you are growing increasingly suspicious that this town isn’t as “small and quiet” as you first expected. Thus far you’ve started town development, discovered your secret talent for Earth Magic, learned to fish, been recruited to learn Water Magic so as to stop an ancient evil under the town, paid (some of) your bills, and found an ancient magical locket. Also a sword fell from the sky at you, but that’s not particularly relevant. You’ve got a past you’d rather stay hidden, and you’re looking to leave it behind. It’s your second day as mayor, and you’ve just been invited to play some video games with Mika, the Shrine Maiden.

“Haha! I win!” You cheer as you win for the first time thus far. You and Mika are playing Marios Kart, and you had some trouble figuring out the game early on (you never got much of a chance to play games back in the city), you managed to get a hang of it fairly quickly.

Mika nods, acknowledging your victory in the field of virtual kart racing. “Props, man. I can’t believe you got that shortcut first try.” Neither can you, to be honest, but you saw the opportunity and had to take it. A knock at the door interrupts your celebrating, and Mika gets up to open the door.

Outside stands a dog and a mouse, the same two you see with Flint and Mika all the time. Charlie and… Est, you think.

“Hey Mike,” says Charlie as he steps in. “Oh hey, what’s the mayor doing here?”

Mika invites the two of them in. “He had some business here, and I invited him to play some games with us. Mayor, this is Charlie and Est.” As she introduces them, Charlie gives a highly ornate bow, and Est merely nods. “Charlie’s Pepper’s little brother, and Est is Odwin’s kid.”

“Hello, Mayor,” says Est. “It is good to have a new Town Leader. Our last one fell to the terrors of dementia. I hope the same doesn’t happen to you.”

“Thanks, I guess,” you say.

“Yeah, kinda sucks,” says Charlie, scratching the back of his head. “The old man was pretty good at his job, and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy all the festivals, but I’m glad we’ve got some new blood in the office now. Spice things up, you know?”

You’re not sure exactly how much you can ‘spice things up’, but you’re glad these guys seem to be positive about your mayorship.

“Alright, so what are we playing? Marios Kart?” Charlie comes into the room and sits down on the bed, while Est stands near the door. “You’re so lucky, Mike. Getting the full Temple allowance, and getting to spend it on whatever you want?”

Mika shrugs. “It’s alright. I still wish Serena were here, so she could cover more Temple duties, but I can manage. As for what we’re playing… how about you decide, Mayor?”

“Ah…”

For any newcomers, this quest is based primarily on Animal Crossing, but with elements of Rune Factory, as well as completely original elements, mixed in. The MC is a human boy named Leo, and he is the Mayor of a coastal town called Whiteport, the map of which is attached.

As always, there is a 20 minute voting period after every post (except the first post, which gets as long as it needs). However, if you just barely miss the window, I'll probably still accept it.

“What about that one?” you say, pointing out a cartridge with various characters on the front.

Mika picks it up. “Oh, nice choice. This is Super Clash Bros, a fighting game. It’s for up to four players, so we can all play at the same time.” She puts the cartridge into the console, and starts it up. “Have you ever played a fighting game before?”

“I’ve played a bit of Street Fighter,” you say, “but I never really understood all the special moves and stuff.”

“Makes sense,” says Mika. “Well, this game doesn’t have all those things, and it’s pretty simple. You just press one button to attack, one button to do your up, down, and middle special attacks, one to shield, and one to grab. It’s not too hard to learn, so you’ll probably figure it out soon enough.”

Charlie nods. “When Est and I first met Mike, he was the king of this game. He destroyed us, even when we were working together. Now we’re a bit more evenly matched, though. You’ll figure it out soon enough, I’m pretty sure. Oh, and you’ll have to pick a character to play as. I play Captain Falcon, myself. His stylish charms suit me.”

“Samus,” says Mika. “He’s not the best character, but I’ve always liked the Metroid games. Plus, it’s always fun to land that perfect Charge Shot.”

“Link,” Est says. “I like the Legend of Zels.”

You nod. The three of them choose their characters, leaving you to select yours.

>Ness

You pick the character called Ness. “He looks pretty interesting,” you say. “Reminds me a bit of myself, when I was younger.”

Mika nods. “Ness is the main character from Mother 2, and he has all sorts of psychic powers. Just as a warning, though, his up special is a bit weird. Most up specials help the character recover, but Ness has to hit himself with the PK Thunder to recover.”

“Huh?”

Charlie shakes his head. “He’ll figure it out soon enough, Mike. Come on, let’s Clash!”

With that, the game starts. At the beginning, you struggle with the controls a bit, but the other three agree to leave you alone to figure out the controls while they play on a different part of the stage. Soon enough, though, you’re able to join in on the brawl, using your PK Fire to set up for some hard hitting melee attacks. You get knocked off the stage a couple of times, but somehow you manage to aim your PK Thunder well enough to recover, even hitting someone on the way up. The final showdown is between you and Mika, but you manage to quickly dodge her grab and finish the game with a hit from your Baseball Bat!

“Oh wow,” says Mika. “I guess that’s what I get for getting greedy. Good game.” You grin in return.

“Nice job, Mayor,” says Charlie. “You’re pretty good, for someone who’s just started today. Are you sure you haven’t done this before?”

You shake your head. It’s not as if you would have had a chance, anyways. “I guess I’m just a quick learner.”

Charlie raises an eyebrow. “No kidding. I mean, how did you even do those aerial attacks so quickly?”
>>
You shrug your shoulders. You’re not sure, but it was pretty cool. “Oh yeah, Mika. I forgot to say before the match, but I’m pretty sure Samus is a girl, actually.”

Mika raises an eyebrow. “What?”

“I mean, a friend of mine from back in the city said that if you manage to beat the Metroid in under an hour, Samus takes off her suit, and reveals that it’s a girl,” you say.

Mika blinks. “Well, I guess I know what I’m doing later today. I mean… wow, I never would have thought that. It’s like… everything I thought I knew about Samus, I suddenly have to reconsider. I mean… a girl?”

Mika seems to be reconsidering her life, but meanwhile Charlie and Est have gotten out the copy of Monster Forest and are plugging it in. You suppose if you wanted to talk to someone, you could do so, or you could just leave.

You decide to talk to Mika. You’ve been learning about quite a few types of magic recently, and it seems like Mika is more knowledgeable about these things than most.

“Hey Mika,” you say, approaching her. “Are you alright?”

Mika nods. “Yeah, I’m fine. It was… just kind of a big shock, I guess. So what do you need?”

“I was wondering,” you say. You’d better make sure you put this in a way that doesn’t reveal anyone else’s secrets. “I know you called your magic “Light Magic” earlier. Are there other kinds of magic?”

Mika raises an eyebrow. “I guess you’ve heard some rumors, huh?” She sighs. “Alright, here’s the deal. There’s two verified types of magic. Light Magic, like most Shrine Maidens use, and Dark Magic. Dark Magic is sort of… the evil opposite of Light Magic. It’s mostly used by Sorcerers and Necromancers, and we of the Temples oppose them. It’s pretty nasty stuff.”

It sounds like it. “You said ‘verified types’, though. Are there unverified types?”

“Ah, yeah. That’s where it gets complicated,” Mika says. “You see, the Temples make a business of recording down as much magical phenomenon as we can, but the rumors about other sorts of magic are rampant. The biggest ones, I suppose are the common elemental magic types. Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. There are a few cases, in older stories and myths, of legendary figures able to move mountains, split oceans, fly, and all sorts of stuff like that. Since the Temples haven’t been able to verify it, though…” Mika shrugs. “Basically, there’s a bunch of claims to various sorts of magic, and not a lot of evidence to back it up. Personally…” Mika hesitates. “Actually, never mind.”
>>
You nod. So what Velour and Kaluga said, about how the magic types are usually too subtle to be noticed, is true. You hadn’t considered that, given Earth and Water as types of magic, Fire and Air might be magic types as well. Maybe you should try them out some time? See if they work?

For now though... “Thanks, Mika. Do you mind if I do some reading in your library sometime?”

“Go ahead,” says Mika. “Don’t forget, this Temple is technically part of Whiteport, so it’s as much your Library as it is the Temple’s.”

“Thanks, Mika,” you say.

Well then, you have the rest of the day to do things. That was quite a fun time you spent with these guys, but you had better get going.

Well, you do have enough Bells on hand to pay off your entire debt, so you may as well do that now. You head down to the Town Hall to pay off the debt.

Oh the way there, however, you notice Cloud standing by the side of the road, looking up.

“Hey Cloud,” you say as you approach him. “How’s it going?”

Cloud continues to look up for a few moments more. “Do you ever think about how soft and fluffy those clouds would be? They’re like big balls of cotton. I know my name is Cloud, but all I want to do is curl up in one of them and sleep in it.”

“I’m pretty sure Clouds are made of water,” you say, “so if anything, you would get pretty wet.”

Cloud sighs. “Yeah, I guess. Maybe I’ll just get a big ball of cotton, and sleep in that instead.” He looks down to you. “Oh, hey there Mayor. Thanks for your help yesterday. Sorry I ran off, I was just a bit surprised.”

“Oh yeah. You’re welcome, I guess,” you say.

Cloud nods. “It’s a good thing, too. It was a Paint Squid, and Dr. Noir says that if it had stayed in the water, it might have turned the entire lake rainbow colored. I mean, I don’t really see the harm in that, but I guess Dr. Noir thinks that it would be bad.”

You raise an eyebrow. “Paint Squid? What’s that?”

Cloud looks at you for a few seconds. Then suddenly, he starts talking again. “You know what zombies are, right? Dead people given life? It’s sort of like that, except with paint.” Cloud sits down, then continues looking up into the sky. “Dr. Noir is a scientist who studies the undead, or in the case of paint, I guess it’s unpaint.” He frowns. “No, that doesn’t make sense. The point is, there’s all sorts of ways that you can give life to things, and there’s a bunch of people who create things like Paint Squids, or Pet Rocks. Then they… uh… multiply, or something, and you’ve got a whole bunch of them running around.”

Ah. “Dark Magic, right? Necromancy, and that sort of thing?”
>>
“Yeah, I guess.” Cloud continues looking up. “I wonder what would happen if someone gave life to a cloud. Would it run around raining on people? What would it eat? Other clouds, maybe? Hmm…”

You decide to leave him there. The rest of the walk to Town Hall is fairly uneventful, and Poppy is actually talking to Medara when you arrive. “Oh, hey there Mayor Leo,” says Medara, grinning. “I’m just posting a letter, I won’t be long.”

You nod, and Poppy appears to finish filling out a form behind the counter. “Alright, Medara. I’ll make sure this is delivered, alright? It’s a long distance letter, so it’ll take a while to get there, but I’ll make sure it does.” Medara nods, leaving the post office. Poppy sticks the letter below her desk, and turns to you.

“Sorry about that, Mayor,” she says. “So, what can I do for you?”

You shrug, pulling out 29,900 Bells. “Here’s the rest of the money to cover my debt. With that, it should all be paid off, right?”

Poppy takes the bag of Bells, counting through them. “Ah, yes! This is enough, and now the debt should be paid off! Congratulations, Mayor!”

You grin. “It wasn’t too much trouble. Now then, what now?”

Poppy nods. “Well, there’s always the option of expanding. Tam Nook could probably get your house expanded, since she has contacts.”

You nod. That all makes sense. Now that your house debt is paid off, you feel like a great weight has been lifted off of your shoulders. You feel more free to do whatever you want.

“So, are there any Public Works projects we can work on?” you ask.

Poppy nods. “Velour is still busy with constructing the road, but we could always see if there’s any projects that can be worked on by someone else. Let me see.” She pulls out a clipboard and considers it. “We could always have a wooden bridge built, but a stone one would require Velour’s help. Flint could build another lamp post, and we can probably get started on a fountain as well. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten any suggestions from the townsfolk yet. Maybe they don’t know that they can suggest things?”

You nod, then suddenly remember. “Oh yeah, Poppy. There’s a legendary sword sticking out of the ground near Kaluga’s shop, and I was wondering what it would take for it to be made into an attraction or something. Like, I don’t know, ‘The Sword of Legends’ or something.”

Poppy tilts her head to think about this. “It’s just sticking out of the ground? That’s not much of an attraction. If it were on top of a mountain, or on an island in the center of the lake, or even just in a stone, that might be different, but in the ground? Why don’t you just bring it to the Museum?”

“I’ve tried,” you say. “Apparently, it can only be moved by legendary heroes, or something.”

Poppy nods. “And we’re a bit short on those. Alright, I guess we could rope it off, maybe build a temple around it later. Our previous Mayor always felt that no matter what the actual thing is, the more spectacle you give it, the more impressive it seems.”

“Yeah, that makes sense,” you say. “Alright, let’s save that project for another day.”

For now, though, you have a couple of options.

First order of business would probably be Town Development. “I’ll try to figure out that sword again later,” you say to Poppy. “Let’s focus on this for now. I’m thinking that, first of all, we should probably get a fountain built in the Plaza. It’s a highly central location for the entire town, so we want it to look nice. Secondly, we should probably put a lamp post near the bridge to this little island. Is that good?”

Poppy nods. “Alright, Mayor. I’ll put out the orders right away.”

That’s good. Whiteport being a full on developed town is still quite a ways off, but this is certainly a start. “By the way, do we have a bulletin board? For announcing festivals and such?”

Poppy nods. “The board is actually outside, on the front of Town Hall. It’s blank right now, but if you want to use it for announcements, feel free.”

“Thanks, Poppy,” you say.

You head back down to the sword. You had an idea earlier, and you’re interested in trying it out, now that nobody else is around.

The sword is, of course, still stuck into the ground. You give the sword another pull, but it predictably yields nothing. Well then, if you can’t move the sword, maybe you can move the earth around the sword? You focus your Earth Magic on the dirt directly around the blade, pulling it away, digging the blade out. It takes a bit of effort, but you manage it, leaving the sword now loose and sitting in a pit.

You try to pick it up, but despite being loose from the dirt, something is keeping you from lifting the blade. But not the earth, for some reason… In that case, you again control the Earth Magic, lifting the sword using the earth itself.

You wipe your brow. The sword is now lying flat on a raised surface, but you’re not sure you have the energy to move it all the way to the Museum. You still can’t lift it, but at least it’s not stuck in the ground any more.

What will you do?

You figure you can at least move it as far as possible for now. Using your Earth Magic once again, you begin to force the sword along, pushing it using the earth in order to move it closer to the Museum.

By the time you approach the river you’re sweating. Just a bit further. Just a bit more pushing, and the sword will be at the museum. Just... a bit...

You black out.

----------------

As you come to, you immediately notice two things. First, this is distinctly not your house. Or anyone else’s that you know, for that matter.

Second, there appears to be a loud noise coming from somewhere off to your left. You sit up. You’re someone’s room, that much is clear. All around is a mix of art supplies and fashion magazines, and looking out the window you see that you’re still on the Chip, since you can see Kaluga’s Shop from here.

You head out the door, to where the noise is coming from. In the main space, you see a dog working. It’s the one from the bar earlier, you realize. Pepper. She notices you soon after you exit the room.

“Oh hey,” she says as she spots you. You look around and notice what exactly was producing that loud noise. The entire room is filled with various types of machinery, devices and such that you couldn’t even begin to guess the purpose of. Pepper notices you looking around. “I see you’re interested in my tech, Mayor. This is my lab, as you can probably tell, and I use all this to make machines. Robots, and all.”

“Wait, robots?” you’re still a bit confused, but that definitely stands out. “Since when do proper robots exist?”

Pepper raises an eyebrow. “For a few years now? I mean, most robots aren’t quite as advanced as the ones I make here, but you have to have seen the window cleaning robots and the vacuuming robots and such, right?”

You… are pretty sure you haven’t. “I guess they just didn’t have many where I lived,” you say. “So what sort of robots do you make?”
>>
Pepper smiles. “Intelligent robots. Robots that are able to consider all the factors in a situation, and choose their own responses based on that. Ones that can memorize things, and learn from the past.”

“Oh. What if they go rogue though?” you say. You’ve seen those movies, after all.

Pepper shakes her head. “We’re still a long way off from robots with actual free will. We can program them to learn and grow, but no robot can do things its programming doesn’t allow it to do.” She suddenly stops, as if remembering something. “Oh yeah, that’s right.” She narrows her eyes at you. “Let me ask you. What were you doing passed out next to an immobile sword? For that matter, what’s up with the sword?”

Ah. Well, time to carefully consider your responses, because there’s an awful lot of secrets you’re trying to keep at this point.

>The sword was built by Hesperatus, Flint’s metalworking teacher. For some reason you can’t draw it if you aren’t a legendary hero or a god.
>It’s a sword that fell from the sky. I was trying to get it to the museum.

>>
>>41926042
>Seems that only a legendary hero can lift it. So I was trying to make it a tourist attraction.

It's not IMPOSSIBLE to lift, but you kinda have to....cheat. Hey, can your robots do it?
>>
“It’s… uh… The sword fell from the sky, right? And, uh, I was trying to get it to the museum?” You grin, hoping that she’ll accept your explanation.

She doesn’t look too convinced. “So then why couldn’t I move it? For that matter, how could you?”

“It’s, uh, really heavy…”

“Don’t start with that,” she says. She pulls up her sleeve, revealing that her entire right arm is made of metal. Oh. That’s… you’re entirely not sure what to think about that. “My arm is strong enough to lift cars, Leo. I very highly doubt that there’s anything you can lift but I can’t.”

Well, you’re going to need a better explanation for that. Maybe the true one. “It’s… the sword can only be moved by legendary heroes or gods,” you say. “To everyone else it’s immobile.”

“Uh huh,” says Pepper. She doesn’t seem convinced. “And are you trying to tell me that you’re some kind of legendary hero? Or maybe a god? Because otherwise, how exactly did you move the sword?”

Shoot, that's going to be hard to explain.

>I cheated it by moving the earth around it! With my hands, obviously, because how else would I move earth hahahaha
>With my... uh... magic earth... moving... powers
>I'm just really really strong. Totally stronger than you, for that matter. I once lifted an entire airplane.
>Aliens! They abducted me, and also the sword! They must have dropped the sword next to me when they returned me to Earth!

“I cheated, sort of,” you say. Pepper raises an eyebrow. “You can sort of move it indirectly, by moving the earth around it. But… well, you saw where that got me.”

Pepper still looks unconvinced, but sighs. “Even if that’s all true, why were you pushing yourself to exhaustion trying to get it to the museum by yourself? I’m sure people would have been perfectly willing to help you, if you’d just asked.”

You… suppose she’s right, actually. You could easily have gone to ask Velour to help you out, since she understands Earth Magic way better than you. Maybe even Kaluga, he might have been able to help somehow. But… “I’m the Mayor,” you say. “It’s my responsibility to deal with these things. If I had to get you guys to do everything for me, what sort of Mayor would I be?”

“One who wouldn’t have been passed out in my brother’s room, that’s what,” Pepper says, obviously not too happy about your answer.

You figure a change of topic might be good at this point. You notice her arm again. “So that arm, did you make it yourself?”

Pepper frowns. “I… had a bit of help,” she says. You wait for a few moments, but it looks like that’s all you’re getting out of her. As you turn to leave, you hear her voice from behind you.

“Leo… I know you’ve only been here a couple of days, but you have to have seen what’s going on here.” You turn, and see Pepper looking at you, a strange pleading look in her eyes. “I’ve… something’s wrong with this town. Something here attracts strangeness, in things, animals… and people. I can tell that there’s some secrets you’re trying to keep, Mayor, but…” Pepper looks down. “Don’t let those secrets endanger others. We in Whiteport... we've already seen what that can cause.” She holds her mechanical arm. “I’m just asking one thing of you, Mayor Leo. Can you trust me?”

What will you do?

Once again, Q&A if you guys want. If not, I'll be posting the next date on my QM Twitter ( https://twitter.com/CubedQm ), so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks once again for reading. I hope you all had an enjoyable experience.
