Your name is Leo. You are Mayor of a small town called Whiteport, and you’ve had a strange couple of days. Thus far you’ve started Town Development, discovered your own ridiculous talent for Earth Magic, learned to fish, paid your bills, started learning Water Magic, found a legendary lost artifact, played some video games with a Light Magic wielding Shrine Maiden, and passed out from overuse of magic. There was also something about a legendary sword. Now, the sun is beginning to set on your second day of mayoring, and Pepper seems emotionally distressed.

“Leo…”

You turn to see Pepper standing in the doorway, giving you a pleading look. The sun is setting behind you, and you can’t help but feel like the hero of some movie. “Yeah?”

Pepper speaks. “I know you’ve only been here a couple of days, but you have to have seen what’s going on here. Something’s wrong with this town, Mayor Leo. The plants, the animals, the creatures… something here attracts strangeness in everything, even the people. I can tell that there’s secrets you’re trying to keep, but…” Pepper closes her eyes. “Don’t let those secrets endanger others, Mayor. We in Whiteport have already seen what that can cause. I’m just asking one thing of you, Mayor Leo. Can you trust me?”

What will you do?

For any newcomers, this quest is based primarily on Animal Crossing, but with elements of Rune Factory, as well as completely original elements, mixed in. The MC is a human boy named Leo, and he is the Mayor of a coastal town called Whiteport, the map of which is attached.

As always, there is a 20 minute voting period after every post (except the first post, which gets as long as it needs). However, if you just barely miss the window, I'll probably still accept it.

I'm mayor. I kinda have to.
>>
“I trust you, Pepper,” you say. Pepper looks a bit surprised at your response. “I mean, I am the mayor, and besides that you helped me out just now. So yes, I can trust you.”

Pepper nods. “Thank you, Mayor Leo. Can you… promise to think things through before doing them? Please don’t do things that would endanger Whiteport, or yourself. And finally, please get someone you can talk to. Someone who you can share your secrets with, and who you can discuss things with. Someone to provide a second opinion, before you do something you regret. Is that alright?”

You hesitate. This is bringing up some memories you’d rather be forgotten. “Pepper, I’ve seen what sorts of things even those with good intentions can cause. So yes, I promise to do those things. I am the Mayor of Whiteport, and I intend to stay true to my job, to protect this town and its people. So thank you, Pepper.”

“You’re welcome, Mayor Leo,” says Pepper. “Don’t forget your promises.” With that, she heads back into the house.

You sigh. She’s right, you’ve been trying to keep all of this to yourself, and you’re well aware that sometimes you don’t make the best of decisions. What you need is a right-hand man. Or woman, you suppose. Someone who you can entrust with your secrets, and who you can rely on to make sure you don’t do anything dumb.

You think back to the city, and Jet. Jet didn’t have anyone to keep him in line… no wonder things turned out the way they did. So yeah, you should probably pick a second.

You consider your options. The citizens of Whiteport would probably be an option. Those with full time jobs wouldn’t exactly be able to accompany you around, but you could always just go to them to talk about things. Then, there’s probably lots of people in other places, like Treeton or even Atlantis, but somehow it doesn’t feel right to hire someone from outside as your right-hand man. Or woman. Deputy?

What will you do?

I like that Mike guy.
Plus, as a member of the clergy he should have experience with keeping secrets.
>>
You consider a couple of options. Picking someone is a pretty big deal, and you don’t want to mess up, after all. You consider Poppy, but she would probably just agree with anything you said. Flint seems like a pretty cool guy, and probably wouldn’t be afraid to tell you when he thought you were wrong, but he’s got a full time job. How about Mika? She seems like she’s spending most of her time just hanging around the temple, and on top of that she’s almost certainly not afraid to challenge your authority. What about her connection to the Temple though? From the sound of it, that’s a pretty big organization that she’s technically a member of.

You look out at the setting sun. It’ll be night soon, on your second day as mayor. You’ve met the populace, and seen an awful lot of strange things along the way. Things have changed, and you yourself have changed as well. You lift up the Locket of the Lost from where it sits around your neck. Magic, robots… you’d heard hints of it before, but not just finding out that it’s real, but even gaining some… it’s a lot to take in. This locket and your bare feet are just signs of the changes you’ve felt.

A sock hits you in the face. Oh yeah, Locket powers. As you remove the sock, you wonder why it’s suddenly activating now, after not having activated since the Sword. Did it need to recharge or something? Or maybe it’s because you’ve had it away most of that time, and are just now bringing it out again. You consider the sock, then stuff it in your pocket. Not much point to a sock without a pair, after all.
>>
You suppose you should probably go talk to Mika, if you plan to make her your right-hand man. Or woman. Right-hand woman. As you head back towards the Temple, though, you notice the Sword lying by the river.

Oh yeah, the sword. Maybe Mika would know something about this sword, in that library of hers. Then again, you get the feeling that what Flint told you about Hesperatus isn’t quite the the full truth. There’s still the issue of moving it, though. It doesn’t exactly look very good just lying on the ground near the river.

Wait, hold on. You take off the Locket of the Lost, taking care to wrap one end of the chain around your hand. The other end wraps around the Sword’s cross guard, and with a pull the sword lifts up calmly, almost without fanfare. Well then. It really is a legendary locket.

What will you do?

>Go see Mika
>Bring the sword to the museum, then go see Mika

We'll put it on display until later.
>>
>>41962585
I still think we should stick it in the plaza or fountain for now. Putting it in the museum obviously means it was moved there.
>>
You decide to leave the sword at the museum, for now. You can put it on display somewhere, either the museum or some other location, later.

The sword is still pretty heavy, even without the magical immobility, but you’re able to maneuver the Locket of the Lost’s chain to wrap about both your hand and the hilt, allowing you to hold the sword in an almost normal fashion. You probably won’t be able to sheathe it or put it down, and the actual Locket portion is dangling a bit awkwardly off to the side, but it works. You head the museum.

“Hey Odwin,” you say as you arrive.

Odwin looks up as you approach. “Ah, Mayor! I’ve placed the fish you donated into their temporary tank, and have already discussed with Nook about installing a full aquarium. I must say, the idea to place an aquarium in the museum is a wonderful one, and is sure to bring in many customers who wish to see rare and exotic fish! Then again, most of them are fish native to Whiteport itself, but no matter! What have you for me today? A solid gold bug? Perhaps a rare lost painting that you found in your attic? I jest, of course. So what it?”

You put the sword onto the counter. “I found this legendary sword earlier today. It can only be moved by legendary heroes and gods, but I’ve managed to trick it by wrapping my hand in this legendary locket I found. Do you mind if I store it in your storeroom?”

Odwin blinks. “You… found it? How?”

You shrug. “It fell from the sky. Probably because of this Locket.”

“Ah, yes,” says Odwin. “Of course. Fell from the sky.” He looks… distinctly frazzled. “Go ahead, feel free to store the legendary sword in my storeroom. Here’s the key! Oh hoh, please do take care to keep an eye out for any legendary lost pieces of art you happen to come across in there!” He hands you the key, then sits back behind the counter, smiling at the entrance.
>>
You take the key and head into the storeroom, where you prop the sword carefully against the wall and untangle the chain from your fingers, putting it back around your neck. You’re about to leave when you find a piece of paper lying on the floor. Maybe it’s Odwin’s? You flip it over, seeing the name written on the front. Ah, makes sense, you guess.

You hand it to Odwin as you leave. “Here, I found this in your storeroom. You… might want to put it up somewhere, I guess.”

He takes the paper, nodding. “Ah yes, one of the lost works of Mozart. Searched for for decades by the entire world of music, and it’s been in my storeroom the whole time. Thank you, Mayor. I’ll put it on display right away.”

You nod, glad that he seems a lot calmer now. “You glasses are crooked, Odwin,” you say, adjusting them for him.

“Ah, sorry about that, Mayor,” says Odwin. “Well, I suppose you’ll be going then. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of this.”

“Thanks Odwin,” you say. It’s pretty great having someone else to manage these things for you. You depart, smiling.

Well then, what will you do now?

You decide to finally head to the temple. It’s already gotten dark out, and you can hear cicadas chirping all around. As you pass through the Plaza you see that most stores are beginning to close. It still feels pretty early to you, but you suppose that’s the way of these small towns, up with the sun and to bed with the sunset, though some seem to stay up a bit later than that.

As you’re heading to the temple, you notice the road nearby. That’s where the guys from last night drove in, and you can see a bus stop nearby. It looks like if you want to head to Treeton, this would be the place to go.

Mika is still inside, you can sense. You head inside, and see her praying at the shrine, eyes closed. You decide not to disturb her, instead just waiting nearby. When she finishes, she looks up and you give her a wave.

“Oh hey,” she says. “Hold on, let me just finish up here.” She places a stick of incense into the incense holder, and mutters a few words under her breath.

“I don’t have that many responsibilities here, but this is one of the few,” she says as she puts the stuff away. “See, one of the main reasons there are Temples in every town is to ward them against monsters. A shrine maiden has to pray at this shrine, and it creates a bit of a deterrence to stop monsters from just walking in. Not enough to stop a really determined one, but for most of the random monsters to decide to look elsewhere for a snack.”

You nod. “So Mika, I wanted to talk to you about something.”

Mika raises an eyebrow. “You sound pretty serious. Alright, what’s up?”

“I was just talking to Pepper, and she raised a good point,” you say. “I need someone to help me out. Someone who isn’t afraid to speak out if they feel like what I’m doing is wrong. I’ve… got a few secrets, and having a second opinion on whether that I’m doing is right would really help. What I’m saying is, Mika, I’d like you to be my right-hand man. Uh, woman, I mean.”

“Wait what?” Mika asks. “Like… Flint and Charlie?”
>>
Um… “What about Flint and Charlie?”

“Well, whenever Flint thinks of a plan, he asks Charlie what he thinks of it,” Mika says. “I mean, he asks the rest of us too, but he goes to Charlie first.”

You nod. “It’s a bit like that, yeah. Plus, you’d be the one I trust with things. Like… my confidante, or something.”

“Is that French?”

“I…” You think it might be? “It means ‘someone who you entrust your secrets to’. Like, I’m confidant that you’ll keep the secrets safe.”

Mika nods. “Alright, sure. I’ll help you out. I don’t have much to do here all day anyways. So what, am I your secretary now?”

You shake your head. “No, you’re more like… my Deputy.”

Mika grins. “I like it. Deputy Mika, upholding the law! Deputy Mika, here to stop you!”

You nod. Well then, this is probably where you’re supposed to actually, well, tell her your secrets.

You know you said you’d tell her everything, but all that stuff from your old city… you really don’t feel like bringing that stuff here. You came to Whiteport to leave your old life behind, after all. It’s not really relevant anyways.

So you tell her everything that’s happened to you over the last two and a half days. About how you came to be Mayor of Whiteport. About the train, and the zombies. About town development, meeting Velour, and learning Earth Magic. (You make sure to add that Velour would rather not be bugged about it.) About catching the rainbow octopus for Cloud, and using your Earth Magic to find fossils. About how you watched the fight yesterday. About Persia, the dark power, and Water Magic. About the Dorados and the Locket of the Lost. About the legendary sword, Hesperatus, moving the sword, and your meeting with Pepper.

At the end, Mika nods. “You know, some of that sounds pretty unbelievable. Like catching two Dorados in one day, and one of them had a legendary artifact in its mouth? Most people would never believe that. I mean, even I probably wouldn’t have believed that, if I didn’t know that that’s a part of the Locket of the Lost.”

“Wait what?” you say, confused.

“Oh yeah, I’ve checked out some more info on the locket,” says Mika. “Turns out people get it by having a really lucky experience after the previous owner loses it. It’s because you caught two Dorados in one day that you got the Locket.”

“Ah.” That makes a bit more sense. “I’ve always been a pretty lucky person, so I can blame it on that.”

“Oh, really? Maybe that has to do with… wait,” Mika shakes her head. “I’m getting away from my original point. The point is, I believe you. You knew about Hesperatus, and Flint doesn’t usually tell people about him.”

“Thanks. So, thoughts?”

“Okay, first. Elemental magic? Totally called it,” Mika says. “I think Flint might be a Fire Mage, by the way. He keeps it close to his chest, but I’m pretty sure he learned it from Hesperatus.”
>>
You nod. “It makes sense, I guess. He was doing something in his back room when I stopped by yesterday, I think it might have been Fire Magic.”

“Yeah, probably,” says Mika. “So then Earth Magic, huh? That’s why you’re not wearing shoes. I wonder if I could learn?”

“Velour could probably gauge your Earth Affinity,” you say. “Besides, I’ve been thinking of asking her to train me, so you could probably just come with.”

“Sounds nice. We should probably clear it with her first,” Mika says. “Then there’s Water Magic. The Temple does have records of Mermaids, but they haven’t been seen around for quite some time. If there really is a Dark Power hiding beneath Whiteport, then I’ll definitely help any way I can.”

“Thanks Mika,” you say. “Persia said I’m the only one in town with high enough initial Affinity, but I’m sure there’s something you could do.”

“As for Pepper’s arm…” Here, Mika pauses. “I came to Whiteport about two years ago, but whatever it was that caused Pepper to lose an arm, it was way before my time. Ten years ago, I think. Back then Charlie was still living with his parents, Odwin and Est hadn’t moved here, and Flint was still training with Hesperatus. The older folks around town don’t like to talk about it, and even if I press them, they just brush me off.”

You nod. “Ten years, huh? Well, I guess they’re entitled to their own secrets.” Oh yeah. “That reminds me, are you going to tell all this stuff to that Temple organization?”

Mika shakes her head. “As much as I’m technically a part of them, I don’t really like them that much, so no. Besides, I’ve got the discovery of the century right here! I’m learning all that Elemental Magic myself!”

You chuckle. Well, you’ve got a right-hand woman now. It’s getting pretty late, though.

Sorry guys, I had an issue I had to deal with.

I've started writing, but it's going to take a bit of time to write.
>>
You suddenly realize that your house is completely devoid of furniture, other than your bedroll and a single wooden box. “I should probably go buy some furniture from Tam,” you say to Mika. “My house is pretty empty, right now.”

“Alright,” Mika says. “I’m probably going to go hang out with Flint and the others, so if you need me, we’ll probably be around.”

You nod. Bidding goodbye to Mika, and agreeing to meet back up tomorrow, you head back down the slope and towards the Plaza. As you head there, you notice that the path is lined with stone now. Nearing the Plaza, you spot Velour standing near a pile of bricks.

“Hey Leo,” she says, grinning. “I’m just finishing this path here. How’ve you been today?”

You shrug. “I found a magical locket and a legendary sword, I guess. Oh, and I made Mika my right-hand man!” You suddenly remember. “Oh, and I told her about the Earth Magic. I’m sorry, Velour, but I’m sure she can keep it a secret.”

Velour frowns. “What?”

You wince. “I… I need some to help me out, Velour. Someone to check my plans, make sure I’m not out of line. For Mika to do that, I needed to tell her everything. Like I said, I’m sorry, but I trust her not to tell anybody else.”

“I gave you my trust, Leo,” Velour says, “and my trust doesn’t come easy. Where I come from, all we have is trust. You’ve got to trust that people can uphold their promises, and you just broke yours.”
>>
Ah, this is turning south fast. “You asked me not to spread it around, Velour. I can promise you, Mika won’t do anything like that. She can keep it a secret, I give you my word.”

Velour sighs. “For as much as your word is worth, I suppose. Trust is easy to break, but hard to put back together. I don’t have it in me to argue with you, though. I just… why did you ask her, and not me? I thought you trusted me?”

“I’m sorry, Velour,” you say, “I needed to pick someone, and Mika fit the bill. Besides, you’re busy with your farm all day.”

“I… I guess.” She seems tired. “Let me just finish this road. I can’t say I trust you as much, Mayor, but I’d rather not lose someone I consider a friend over this. Just… think about things before you do them, alright?”

“I’ll try my best.”

Velour sighs, and goes back to laying stones.

As always, Q&A if you want to stick around.

I'll be dealing with college starting on Saturday, but I'll do my best to run Animal Crossing Quest whenever I can. For now the next session will probably be Thursday, 4:30 PST, but check out my QM Twitter ( https://twitter.com/CubedQm ) for the most up to date updates.

Forgot about Mika blabbing it to the church, and it kinda IS a big deal considering Mika's position. Still, if we're taking responsibility for this, we're taking responsibility for this.

First, is to gather everyone who uses magic and address the whole water demon thing.

After that, allow Mika to research elemental magic, but only to the point that each person is comfortable with, and to keep it all in a notebook that should always be on her person. We don't discuss spreading this until that church leader person comes back.

Oh look a furry waifu quest. This board really has gone down the shitter.
