You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

The water stretches out under your feet. The sky overhead it littered with stars – too many, almost, a great white moon seeming to draw them around itself, dragging them with it on its slow, pendulous journey through the black. The lake is clear and cool, its surface undisturbed for miles, trailing off into a mist that that hangs like a cloak over the horizon. Huge, dark shadows move deep below, and your footsteps linger as tiny, repeating ripples in your wake, like blips on a radar. Hints of recognizable architecture litter the surface – odd angles of this and that ruin, some of them far too small, others exaggerated to gargantuan proportions, little tidbits of Scar jutting up through the water.

Somehow they seem worse for wear than they’ve ever been, overgrown and infested with broad, long-limbed trees and snaking mangroves. Old, dead leaves lie in matted clumps across their backs, slowly drifting down into the water, sinking like stones.

You feel strangely at home.

The ruins get thicker as you traverse the starry waters. The smell of fresh loam fills your nose, speaking of dark, rich earth, newly upturned and longtime waiting, undisturbed by the sun and untouched by the wind. There is a sense of living, of being in a place that breathes and grows and dies, but no sounds – not of wings beating or of paws scurrying through the dirt, nor voices in any language.

You look back at the infinity of water behind you, at the mist clinging in the distance, and a sense of tense wakefulness settles in you – your skin prickling and your ears itching at the lack of sound.

Turning your back on the endless expanse, you continue into the ruins. They cluster in closer, windows clogged with twisting bark, shadows of ash etched upon their walls. Long, sinuous vines loop their way from roof to roof, like clotheslines, decorated with tassels of ancient, damp fabric – torn, ragged shirts and old underwear. It clusters in closer, the walls closing in, until eventually you are aware of soft, damp earth yielding slightly under your feet.

Roots run like bone through the mud. The trees almost outnumber of buildings now – they twist in and out of the tumbled structures, seeming to bear them down into the earth, reclaiming them. There is a sharp, cold breeze, but it has no voice, only a faint, insistent touch, lingering upon your cheeks and your hands, at the tips of your bare toes.

As you press between the long, loping roots, you hear something move amidst the undergrowth – bones chattering and creaking in naked motion, ligaments stretching, breath bubbling through the air, persistent and hot. It moves parallel to you, crouching closer to the earth, to the trees, to the arched backs of the roots, skulking just out of sight.

It smells of flesh blood and split marrow.

You don’t feel so much as you know fear.

You bolt into the undergrowth, ferns thrashing at your side, wind coursing along your spine, following its ragged scent. It twists and slips through the ruins, staying constantly ahead, moving in careful, precise bursts of shadow, joints cracking against one another, fresh, red blood flicking across the loti and lilies in its wake.

At some point you forget that your hands are hands, clawing frantically through the dirt, bounding from ruin to ruin, your heart pounding in your chest.

Eventually, it leads you through a thick, dark briar, nettles scraping at your arms as you squeeze through the tangle, coming to a broad, open clearing, the ground littered with junk and bones – bits of old toothbrush and shattered glasses, broken toys, cheap phones.

You hear bones click and snap all around you, long, many-limbed shapes moving in the dark.

They close in a rush of bloodied motion.

>HOMELESS MUTANT QUEST: CHAPTER TWO

You awaken with a start, the sweat cold against your brow.

The sky overhead is red and huge, midday clouds arrayed like long, dark trips of scar tissue. You’re on your back, nestled against the wall of one of the many skeletonized buildings that dot the scar, a thin layer of frost gleaming across your jumper. Someone’s poking your cheek with stick.

“Hey.” Young, drawling voice. “Are you dead?”

You shake your head slowly, glancing up.

There’s a kid squatting nearby, watching you intently. He can’t be any older than ten or eleven, with dark, matted hair and eyes of perfect, opaque black.

You remember last night. Leland. Coming back, feeling drunk with power and purpose. You must’ve crashed somewhere in the Scar.

You’re kinda surprised you slept through the cold.

“No.” You grunt, heaving yourself up. “I’m not dead.”

You look out across the Scar. The land dips slightly at your feet, giving you a middling view of the vast, grey expanse. Smoke rises from one of the old estates in the distance, spreading out across the sky as it rises, becoming little more than a wisp of slowly-dying warmth.

You glance down at the kid. It’s kinda hard to tell if he’s actually looking at you or not – no pupils, no sclera, just black. He’s wearing old, ratty shorts and a light T-shirt that looks like it’s gone through the digestive tract of at least three thrift stores, the Captain America shield on its front beginning to lose its stars.

“Where’re you from?” You ask.

He points down at one of the ruins nearby – an old apartment complex slumping into another.

“I live with Audrey.” He explains.

Right. Well, you have no idea who that is.

“Okay.” You blink, reevaluating his attire. Looks kinda light. “Aren’t you cold?”

He shakes his head slowly. “I don’t feel the cold.”

Oh. Okay.

“You heading home?”

He blinks slowly, in a motion that seems almost amphibian. “Not really.”

Huh, alright.

“Well…” You glance out over the Scar. You don’t feel quite as driven, as precise, as you did last night. Instead, you’re just somewhat restless. “Mind showing me where you’re holding down?”

He shrugs impassively, making his way down toward the ruins.

You check your phone on the way. Still nothing from Peter. You thought the revelation that he’d a superhero would prompt some form of contact eventually, but apparently not. Maybe he’s in Spider-denial.

After a bit of coaxing, you get his name out of him. He’s called Sam and he’s ten years old. He can create fog, apparently.

“You seem like a Rex.” He says, as you approach the shadow the old apartments. “Like Tyrannosaurus Rex.”

“Because of the scaly bits?” You smile, faking a small amount of indignation. “That’s discrimination against lizards.”

“Oh.” He replies, softly. “I am very sorry.”

“Uh, no, it’s just a”–

As you pass under the tilted ruins, you hear voices up ahead. Someone’s managed to get a bunch of plastic shower curtains hung up between awkward poles of bent rebar, shadows moving behind them. There are also bathtubs everywhere, for some reason.

“…safe to say that you would describe your living conditions as harsh?” It’s a female voice, mid-thirties, slight Indian accent. You’re not sure where from, exactly, just that this person probably speaks Hindi.

“Well, I dunno about harsh…” Another girl. Younger, American. Probably a New Yorker. “…maybe, let’s see… grueling? Arduous? Arduous sounds good.”

There’s at least two back there others, both male. You think you can smell electronics running.

Sam walks up to the farthest curtain, lifting it aside slightly.

Behind it, one of them perched on the side of an empty bathtub, is one clearly mutant teenager and three much cleaner, much more official looking types – the kind that set your nerves at edge almost immediately. The girl is basically a fish. Or an eel, actually – her skin has that kind of shiny, wet texture to it, a greyish tone to its coloration. Her hair is long and black and billows slightly as if underwater, and her shirt clings to her chest as if she’s constantly slightly wet.

She fixes you with a bright, milky-white stare.

“Oh, hey!” She chirps, sliding off the edge of the bathtub. “You here for a bath?”

You sniff at yourself. “Uh. No.”

“…He followed me home.” Says Sam, his voice low, almost disinterested.

“Oh. Well them, goodu jobbu!” What. She beams down at him, giving him a thumbs up. “Increasing awareness is a step toward a healthy customer base!”

You glance over her shoulder at the others. Like you thought, one of them is an Indian woman, her hair tied back into a tight bun, a pair of slimly-framed glasses resting upon her nose. She regards you with a quiet, sharp air of appraisal, like she’s putting the parts of you together in her head. You get the distinct impression that she’s wearing a suit underneath her puffy jacket. Beside her is a guy with a camera and a much broader, taller fellow, his stance suggestive of barely-restrained muscle. You can taste the gun holstered under his jacket.

“You should watch your kid more closely.” You say, glancing down at the rows of bathtubs. What’s she even doing with them? “There’re some real weirdos out there.”

“Pffft.” She grins lopsidedly. You notice a set of gills fanning open along her neck. “You know, that’s how the serial killer always introduces themselves, before everyone knows they’re the killer.”

You raise a hand in counterpoint, but find that you have no counterpoint. She’s right.

“Just keep it in mind.” You mutter, glancing back up at the Indian woman, whose eyes are still fixed on you. Is that camera pointing on your direction now? “…What’s going on here?”

“Oh!” The eel girl – you’re going to assume that this is Audrey from now on – perks up onto her tiptoes for a moment. “These guys’re just”–

“Kavita Rao.” Interrupts the older woman, stepping forwards slightly to hold out her hand. You give it a suspicious glance. “I’m working with the ICRC on this case. We’re providing a case that humanitarian aid is necessary here.”

“The eye-see-are-what?”

“The Red Cross.” She has a curt, sharp edge to her voice. Sounds tired. Like the kind of tired that doesn’t go away after a night’s sleep. “I assume you know”–

“Y-yeah, yeah…” You have a vague idea. People from Geneva. “I thought… I thought you guys only got involved in, like, third world stuff…”

“Yes, well…” She sniffs quietly, glancing around at the rubble-strewn floor, her eyes lingering for a moment on the rows of dusty old bathtubs.

You take her hand, and immediately notice the surprised expression forming behind her glasses.

“Interesting handwear.” She notes, glancing down at the white, synthetic glove on your hand. Crap – you forgot you were wearing that. You don’t respond, just chide yourself inwardly and deflect.

“Why’re you guys suddenly interested in this place?”

You think a certain amount of paranoia is appropriate here. To her credit, Ms. Rao (she seems like Ms.) seems accustomed to a certain level of hostility, and doesn’t skip a beat.

“Reports of mutants living in this area have steadily risen over the past month. It makes sense, considering the incident at the docks.” Yeah. That thing. “The proper authorities have yet to take action, but a high number mutants living in squalor is of interest to the ICRC, for obvious reasons. Few communities of mutants can form in the US without being broken up or dispersed, and those that do generally exist in a poor state.” She pauses, and adds: “I myself am not a Red Cross. I’m working with them because mutation is an interest of mine, as is charity.”

That last bit makes you a little wary.

“You’re a doctor or something?”

“I have a doctorate.” She states, flatly. “I’m a geneticist.”

Like dad. Like Typhon.

She keeps going:

You don’t give that much thought. In fact, you don’t even bother with an answer.

You have questions, after all, and you like to get those straightened out before you start handing out anything of yourself.

“Why’re you interested in mutation?”

You can’t help but sound a little accusatory. Probably because most people with an interest in mutation are mostly just interested in finding the right jackboots to step on you with. Current research seems to have indicated that big, purple, robot boots are the best answer anyone’s provided to that line of questioning.

“X-gene mutation is one of the most unpredictable genetic conditions to have emerged in recent years.” She states, apparently unfazed. “There are few geneticists without a passing interest in it. It poses a question that needs answering.”

“That’s not an answer.” You say, a little annoyed. Maybe you raise your voice a bit, because you notice the big guy in the back shift his weight slightly. You ignore it. “Why’re you interested? You.”

At first she seems a little taken aback, possibly not expecting you to call her, but her expression flattens out almost immediately. Just like that, you can pretty much hear her windows and doors closing – she shuts you out.

“That’s personal.”

Yeah?

“Then I don’t have a statement for you.” You reply, your brow creasing.

Turning to leave, you pause for a moment.

“You should all be carrying a gun, by the way. Not just the big guy.”

With that, you head out.

Red Cross, huh? You can’t help but wonder what the Corsairs – or, shit, the Hellions – will think of that.

You feel restless – the station, safe and warm and cozy as it is, seems far too claustrophobic for your current state of mind. To be honest, being underground has never sat exactly well with you; just having a roof over your head feels awkward, let alone several meters of solid concrete.

You make your way out of the Scar, onto the streets, nosing your way around in search of a paper. It doesn’t take long to track down someone peddling a Bugle – you’re pretty well acquainted with their spots, after all – and you drop a few dollars on the big issue, grabbing a coffee from a nearby stand to help wash the news down.

As expected, the headline is

“THE OWL DISAPPEARS”

You find a nice corner and give it a thumb-through.

It never straight up calls Leland a crime lord – it says stuff like ‘implicated’ and ‘suspected’ a lot, which makes sense, you guess. Apparently, his place was under FBI surveillance during the attack, and they stormed the place soon after. One bit in particular sticks out:

>“While the identity of Mr. Owlsley’s kidnappers remains unknown, witnesses claiming to be Leland’s private security have stated that a mutant was involved in the attack.”

Huh. Don’t know if you like that being there.

So what do you think Typhon is gonna do when he learns that Ms.Rao is on the prowl in his forest?
>>
Ditching the paper, you wrack your brain for reasons to stay outside a little longer, and manage to find a few.

The first is that you’re hungry. You remedy this with a quick stop in a nearby fatburger, making sure to keep your hood very much up. You can’t help but find it a little galling that people are willing to walk into the place looking all kinds of loathsome, but apparently a set of overly-long ears is like way over the line duuuude.

Scarfing down the meal (you basically ordered whatever was cheapest – some kinda crispy chicken thing with fat ass fries), you head out along the high street, plucking up the courage to enter one of those big, fancy places that sells girl clothes. Laura kinda needs a new pair of pants.

You feel a nervous shiver pass down your spine as you make your way in, the central heating slowly brushing the frost from your hoodie.

Oh Christ. There’s multiple floors to this place.

Who wants to do this?

>>41997614

Even a bunch of baseball balls or bearing balls would do in a pinch, and pack a bit more punch than just a rock.
Or my original suggestion, butterfly paperclips
>>
>>41997641

I vote for it.

Or at least a good, heavy bat and some balls.

no to bows
>>
>>41997641
I'm up for going to a home depot and picking up a bag-full of ball bearings and some wrenches and shit.

Construction grade tools ain't nothing to fuck with

not that home depot sells the highest quality shit, anyway.
>>
>>41997641
No bow
>>
>>41997641
Ah well. Im in the desolate north so.

I am fine with the ball bearings idea, not keen on bow and arrows.
>>
>>41997670
Same, I thought it was just a made up thing Crusty came up with, but this thread is steadily correcting that assumption.
>>
>>41997641
I'm gonna say no to the bow
Super strength don't want to break it.
>>
>>41997641

no. spend it onsomething sensible like a vacuum cleaner instead, you morons.
>>
>>41997641
I vote we beg moon moon for one
>>
>>41997678
If we're going for that sort of thing, forget the balls. Just get wrenches. Wrenches are notably better throwing weapons, have superior melee capabilities, and can be used to fix shit.
>>
Okay a lot of people want different stuff, so I'm going to make a post about this. Writing.
>>
>>41997749
Wrenches are also harder to hide, take up more space, and are far easier to break.
>>
>>41997641
No bow. I don't know the math, but I'm pretty sure with our strength we can out-shoot any modern bow.
>>
marbles should be cheaper and easier to acquire than ball bearings
>>
Or, y'know, eye lasers, also we dont like crowded places. Lets get some cheap-ass pants and GTFO back to our friends
>>
>>41997641
Depends on the exact price. What kind of price range are we looking at?
>>
>>41997800
>Or, y'know, eye lasers,

Which are not stealthy or silent.
>>
Oh god, JJ is going to come home with arrows, a wrench, BBs, a feather duster... basically the components for the most schizophrenic superhero gear set ever. And he'll carry it all in plastic store bags, because he is, The Vagrant.
>>
>>41997810
Same anon here. I personally favor marbles and ball bearings as they're less noticeable.

Wait, Green Arrow?

Hawkeye?

Shit.

We're shit.

WEhat'll it be is "The Vagrant", a homeless mutant who can use anything and everything on the streets as a weapon, and will do so.

Manhole covers, street signs, bricks, abandoned vehicles, trashcans and random vision obscuring refuse and litter!

You briefly consider a skirt, maybe some tights to go with it, but the prospect of making your way up to the second floor is a little too daunting for you – you’re just a man, dammit. You weren’t designed for this. Second floor shopping seems a little advanced.

Instead, you just pick out a few sets of jeans. It never ceases to surprise you that there are like a whole thirty different types of ‘small’. You’re willing to bet that, whatever the official numbers on Laura’s sizes are, they’re mostly in the area of ‘smallest’, and make your choices appropriately.

After a brief, nervous exchange with the girl at the counter, you are the owner of two sets of very skinny jeans.

>Current Funds: $1,045

As you make your way back out into the street, it strikes you that there are a few other items you’ve been considering…

Why are we getting a bow again? We have laser beams, and anything that we can't hurt with those is something we don't have a chance of hurting with a store-bought bow and arrow.

But they are? JJ can just knock a normal person out by shooting him in the head. And if it doesn't work on someone, no way is a bow going to do better.

Bat's mostly for intimidation, with JJ's strength it breaks in two serious hits. Get two, one to carry and the other for home defense\mutant baseball.

Quite the shopping trip.

I'm going to have to call the thread here due to stuff tomorrow. I have a hospital appointment and I have to do some SW:E stuff so I probably won't run tomorrow, but I want to do one the day after, so we'll see.

All the stuff you guys've selected will be purchased as of next thread.

I'll be here for a short while if anyone wants to ask anything.

JJ could get a better result by just throwing the arrows. No point in wasting a shitload of money on a bow.

>>41997944
If we ever need to take on something of that size, our contacts can probably get something similar. Or we can use a repeating crossbow or something.

Javelins would be more effective than any other ranged weapon we could get our hands on that wasn't built to be utilized by someone who can -throw- a car

Okay.

>>41998054
JJ can indeed throw an arrow pretty hard, but arrows are awkward to throw.

Yeah. I did a secondary quest on akun purely because I wouldn't have to run live sessions, but I will do one when I have more time in general.

Man the one time I am not here for the tread, you guys decide to actually go shopping and get weapons.

We should had gotten electric tape, and/or duct tape. There are so many uses for it, its not even funny, from sealing self made gass masks, electoproofing shields or using it to tie up people. Still got ball bearings, so it's good.
