You call this pose "Humble Lizard Greets the Sun." It's an excellent posture for waking up and immediately basking in. It was nice of the wizards to give Nytora a place to sleep while she's stuck in town to help with the her not dying project. It was nice of Nytora to let you crash here as well. She probably appreciates you sleeping on top of her less, but the room isn't terribly large and you tend to migrate to the top of any given lizard pile when there's sunlight to be basked in.

Stretching you contemplate the day. Only to realize you have no hard plans. You've got a couple things you CAN do, but nothing that's time sensitive. You think about it while you finish off the rat basket.

>Shopping day, gotta stock up on stuff
>You had a quest or something from the wizards, find some merpeople to help
>Chill with Nytora. Today is lazy lizard day
>Return that basket to the guild and seek adventurers
>Other thing that sounds fun <write in!>

Right, job. You want to get jobs out of the way so you don't have time to forget them. This job was supposed to involve the ocean. You have friends in wet places. You just need to figure out what part of the wet places they're currently in.

Your train of thought is temporarily derailed when someone knocks quietly on the door. You open it to find Gerald, already dressed in what you have determined to be nice clothes, pushing a cart with rather squat teapot on it. You catch the scent of those things Koma boiled coming from the pot. As you recall the stuff in that pot tastes absolutely foul but is still really quite tempting. He nods politely.

"I thought I would check if ma'am needed anything before going about my morning duties," he says.

"Um. We ares fine," you tell him, "Nytora is still sleeping. She's a very night favoring lizard."

"As are the masters in their own human way," Gerald acknowledges with a nod, "If you need anything I'll be around."

"Can I gets a cup of that?" you ask him, pointing at the tray.

"Of course," he nods and produces a mug and pours some of the brew into it.

"What is this called?" you ask, sipping it then flinching at the flavor.

"Coffee. It's made from a plant that's rather difficult to gather in this area. Most of it has to be shipped in from another place," he explains.

"Huh," you hum thoughtfully and contemplate your drink.

"Is something amiss ma'am?"

"No, just wonderings how Koma gets hers," you explain.

"Koma, Miss?"

"Ah. Our sister. She sleeps a lot. She drinks this."

"I've been made to understand that some of the appropriate plants grow readily in areas of the swamp, but due to the danger involved in cultivating things near the swamp there's no way to get it more locally," he suggests reasonably.

Lizards would be better at growing things in or around the swamp, you admit. You're not sure what 'cultivation' means but you have some guesses.

"Do you know if there are merpeople visit the port?" you ask. He seems pretty knowledgable he should know.

He assumes a thinking posture for a moment before answering.

"I'm afraid, Miss, that I can't recall having ever heard of such a thing. As far as I'm aware the merrow race do not live in this area except for one particularly large specimen. And that one does not visit the port as much as she harries its patrons."

"Harries?" you echo the unfamiliar word.

"She tends to sink small ships that try to follow the coast into port. Larger ships tend to find severe damage to their hull upon arriving that necessitate repairs. If I recall correctly there's a rather sizable bounty for that particular beast."

You take a long pull of your coffee.

"That sounds like Milly's mom," you say idly.

"Ma'am?"

"Milly is mermaid. She's a friend of mine," you explain, "Her mom is a giant with lots of tentacles."

"Is that so?" he asks, unruffled.

You nod and finish off the mug. He takes it and places it on the tray

"Hm, perhaps in the future you may discuss with her the merits of not sinking ships?"

"Are there any?" you ask.

"Well, I'm sure it would make the sailors happy," he suggests.

"I gots the impression that she didn't haves a high opinion of sailors and humans in general now that I thinks about it," you say.

"Hm. Perhaps something to revisit at a later time then?"

You nod.

"Thank you for the coffee," you tell him. It's still foul but you kind of like it. You should get the stuff to make it from Koma next time.

Gerald leaves to take care of his morning chores and you find your way out of the tower.

>Come to think of it, breakfast would be good before work
>You can find something to eat on the way, to the beach!

The kind of person that's never seen cheese before and isn't known for being picky about food. And the qualities that make cheese edible or not aren't particularly well known by lizards. In general you get one lizard with a bad experience poisoning the well of cheese eating for every other lizard with the horrors they experienced.

The streets are mostly clear this morning as you make your way back to the gate out of the city. The gate you came in that is. Apparently there are two. One leads out into the plains to the east, but you really can't think of a reason to go that way. All the merrows you know live on the west side of the town, supposedly. You're not sure how far you'll have to go to find them.

As you approach the gate the guards standing nearby wave to you. You give them a polite nod.

"If you're going out," one warns, "Y'should be aware that some adventurers came back through this way last night and said they were attacked by something out there. They got away but they didn't get a good look at whatever did it. Apparently it turned invisible or something."

Huh. You've not heard of any invisible monsters in the swamp. Though you're closer to mountains and sea right now than swamp. It's possible it's something Auntie never mentioned to you before. Sill you've got a good idea how to track an invisible thing on an open stretch of beach and you don't plan to stay on the beach past finding breakfast.

The sand is already blisteringly hot for non-lizard non-sun-attuned feet. The waves are crashing in and it looks like it's going to be a lovely day. There are some fish jumping around far out to sea but by the time you'd be able to swim out there they'd be gone. Besides you've gone too long without bird.

You make your way along the beach, keeping a watchful eye for seagulls. They tend to gather around whatever washed up during the night, and something always washes up during the night. You're rather bothered by the amount of time it's taking to reach wherever they're hiding. The beach seems strangely deserted.
[1/2]
>>
>>41998114
[2/2]
The spot where the adventurers were attacked is found faster than you find birds. There're spots of blood in the sand in a gradually growing trail pointed at the city. Sure enough you don't see anything that could have done it. You make a point to keep an eye out for tracks suddenly appearing in the sand, and check for things that might be signs of an invisible monster standing around.

You immediately notice the spot on the beach. Almost as long and wide as you are from nose to... nose to where your tail used to be, there's a wide circle of sand that'd just subtley off from the rest of the beach. It's not deepressed like something invisible is on it but you can't figure out why else it would look like that. You squint and try to see the invisible thing. You can't hear anything.

There's a blast of sand and you feel long rods like a bony giants fingers wrap around you and then you're in the dark and upside down. There's a sharp pain as something stabs into your neck and you thrash reflexively.

You feel something burning around the spot where something stabbed into your neck. Though the area where you were stabbed is getting numb. You make the appropriate guesses and crank up your light in a minor panic. You push it over the limit rapidly until it blasts out in a stunning wave.

In the moments of light you spot the underside of what you're fairly sure is a spider. This doesn't help your panic. You're reasonably sure it's just an ordinary giant spider and not the kind with human bits, but- oh god what if they can change into normal giant spiders. You can't remember breaking any promises lately, except.

That bird of a merchant. His stupid evil contract. That can't count right? Oh god lizard it probably counts and now you're going to be eaten by a giant spider person because you broke you word. You begin panicking in earnest.

The blast of light doesn't appear to have done more than shock the spider momentarily as it begins holding tight again. You thrash like a mad lizard but you still feel the spiders fangy bits find a softer bit of you to penetrate, that same warm burning sensation filling the injury as you struggle.

The burning in your injuries fails to spread much further then their vicinity but you still can't feel those bits. YOu put that aside to worry about later. It takes a bit of effort but you manage to thrash around and get a hand on your knife. You slide it out and angle it so that when the spider pulls you in to bite again it'll get a thorax full of magic knife.

You try to pour mana into your body and out in a nova as well but realize the bracelet will prevent that, it also keeps you from activating your knife.

It turns out that a knife in the thorax is pretty effective even if it isn't magically empowered. The spider crushes itself against you to try and bite again but takes the knife. It thrusts away from you and you take advantage of the opening to work yourself free of its legs.

One of the key racial abilities of lizards, which auntie briefed you on, was the ability to assess the getting and be able to acquire it when the quality is high. Your lizard sensibilities are currently telling you that this is the best time to buy GET stocks. You make your exit.

Behind you the spider scrabbles up after you but before it can get a leg out you're all back on the beach, blessed sun shining onto you. You try picking the clasp on the bracelet and find it stubbornly refusing to release quickly. The lid of the hole, still covered in sand and held together by webbing swings up in the periphery of your vision.

You turn and slam your wrist hard into the space between the spiders eyes. The clasp on the bracelet finally gives up the ghost and opens as the spider rears back to tumble back into its hole. You grab your knife as it's falling.

Mana flows into you and you feel alive again. It's like the sun has risen on a new day and you're filled with energy, something you hadn't even noticed was missing when you woke up. The dull throbbing where you were bit still fails to turn into anything more serious. You're fairly sure the spider is venomous, but you're equally sure that you are a lizard and thus have a decent resistance to poisons.

The trickle of mana entering you is pushed into your knife and you see the blade grow out a bit as the metal turns crystalline and transparent, tinier growths of crystal beginning to spread out from the hilt. You thought you had the fire stone in. Whoops.

You spin your dagger in your hand, cutting off the flow of mana, your Smokey stone is popped out as you slide the knife shaped fire stone in. Mana resumes its flow and your dagger turns to molten metal. Stopping the dagger point down you kick the closing trapdoor back so that it falls open to the sun.

Inside the spider recoils at the suddenly returning light. Then it recoils further because you land on it, knife first. You score an eye or two from its face, and the spiders legs wrap to try and enfold you.

Instead you clinch close and the spider reflexively tries to bite you. The fangs fall into the scales on your back and deflect off the tougher scales. You pull the knife back and shove in the spiders underside now. The smell of cooking spider and ash is in your nose as your other hand finds the hole in the spider from earlier and you start tearing.

The spider struggles but can't get an advantage over you with the sun on you and mana flowing through you and one hand halfway inside it. It struggles for a couple minutes while you continually stab into it with your other hand. Finally it lets out a last shudder and stills.

Exitting the hole again you examine your injuries. The spider scuffed some of your scales but nothing serious. The two holes it punched in your with its fangs, technically four you guess, still don't have sensation, you'll have to find something to cure that later. For now you take out the bandage powder you have left and start scabbing over the wounds.

You pull the spider's corpse out of the hole and examine it more closely. Yeah, there're definitely no human bits on that. You're probably safe. Probably. You were scared for a bit there. Still this is not invisible. Clearly someone needs to tell those guards what invisible doesn't look like.

It's a few miles back to the gate but the guards are ready to meet you when you walk up with a spider that's bigger than you. You have to spend several minutes getting them to calm down. Then you spend a bit longer making sure they understand the difference between visible and invisible. They keep insisting that they weren't the ones that said it was invisible but you know what you heard.

Then you have breakfast. Spider tastes a lot like crab. Maybe a bit less salty. You like it. If you weren't fairly sure killing giant spider monsters would attract giant spider people you'd probably try for this more often.

You've backtracked a bit today. Funny how giant spiders are great at screwing up perfectly workable plans just by being there.

As you finish eating you let yourself drift into the mentality you need for combat basking. It's fairly easy when you're not being asked to move too much. Your love of the sun folding together with some inborn part of you to form the strange energy used for combat basking. It's as pleasant as you remember.

You let the energy slowly leak out into your body, going at its own rate. You feel the power flow through you and begin congregating around your injuries with no respect for severity. It burns off quickly though and you can feel the tingle in your scales as the ones that are slightly out of line get organized again. The wounds from the spider burn for a moment, then they become numb, and then burn again, minutes pass as it repeats several times before suddenly sensation returns to the area as the flesh knits properly. The stump of your tail itches.

There's a bit of the power left...

>Let it keep working

Try something new:

>Push the power into your body, make it go fast
>Channel the energy out of you by the path of least resistance, let it go at it's own speed
>Excite the power and let it escape down the above channel with greater force
>Let the power leak out of you and permeate the air around you
>Force the power out completely, smash the air

>Back to town
>Find merfolk

You let the power leak out of you now. It slowly presses out of you and you notice a moderate haze just on the surface of your skin. You remember a similar haze above the wheel boxes and on the road from your time as a lizard. Oddly the distortion wasn't always there. Your iguana-self never could figure out what caused it. Or what it was. Now, seeing it again, you still don't know what it's doing. You look around and find that the guards who stuck around to watch you eat are looking distinctly uncomfortable. Moreso than they were just watching you break off spider limbs and suck out the meat. They're sweating pretty heavily.

"Uh, could you please stop," one asks uncomfortably, "It's really hot."

Hot. You didn't notice any heat but you're fairly sure you're immune to it. You pop the last of the energy, just dregs really, and it dissipates. That ability wasn't using much.

SUNNIVA LEARNED HEAT WAVE

You're hungry again. Despite just eating you're feeling ravenous. If you had to guess, healing takes food. Luckily you've got another half a spider left.

The last of the jerk consumed you bury the bits of shell and clean up in the ocean. Any guards left have cleared out by the time you're done eating. You suppose now you'll have to go find the merrow living nearby.

You head back past the hole the spider dug and head into the water. Milly and her brother showed you the stuff to watch out for to tell if merfolk lived nearby, and you immediately see signs that at least one group lives this far East. There are traps laid out for various critters and signs of seaweed harvesting. You head further West looking for where they'd properly live.

After about twenty minutes of swimming you finally find a large coral structure that is about the size of your own house. Merfolk don't spend a lot of time in their houses, mostly using them as a place to congregate and sleep when the water is particularly rough. They're also good for storing food for later. If you hang around here long enough someone should turn up.

You didn't need to wait, a merman, or merboy you don't know how to tell the age of fish or humans, swims out of the structure. He appears upset. He has the same blue hair and features of Dezzy but is slightly larger and his skin is much darker except for stranger patterns of white on it. He circles a bit before noticing you floating nearby.

He appears shocked but recovers quickly. Swimming up to you he begins to talk a mile a minute. You gesture to him to indicate that you still only speak drowning and he gestures to the surface.

"You! You are Sunny right?" he asks. Huh. Sounds like Dezzy too.

"Yes. Haves we met?" you ask.

"I'm Dezzy," he says with frustration.

"Oh. You'res different."

"I grew," he says tersely. On closer inspection you notice his white patterns seem to loosely follow the skeleton he'd have inside. Though the skull on his face is fairly stylized. You wonder what kind of evolution he got.

"Good work! And good morning I guess."

"Uh, yes. Hi!" he says distractedly.

"So this is a special evolution?"

"Bone fish," he says quickly, "Mom was... mixed. But-"

"Ah," you nod sagely, "Growing fast for merrow then?"

"What? I guess. But no-"

"Is Milly around? I found something like an adventure and thought you guys might want to help. It's even in the water!"

He looks pained and you notice that he seems really uncomfortable.

"Are you alright?"

"Uh, yeah fine..."

"Are you sure? You seem off..."

"Um... Yeah, look," he looks in the water in all directions, "Can you keep a secret?"

You nod. Secrets are pretty easy. Like how you're an iguana. You're not sure that's a secret but you're pretty sure it's the closest you've got. Whatever you're great at secrets.

"Milly's missing."

>I've got to call it here. Got work in a couple hours and I need to get ready. Also I wanted to try that cliffhanger thing people complain about.
>Next thread... Hell if I know my schedule is nuts and poorly communicated. Maybe Tuesday
>I'll be around while doing stuff to read whatever you guys say and answer questions and stuff. Just don't have the focus for writing properly or I'd keep doing that. So tell me how you really feel anons. Thanks for coming!! Apologies to anons just getting here.

Dun Duun Duuuuuunnnnn!
Thanks for the run Ewe! So will Sunni ever be brave enough to one day venture into Spider lands?
>>
>>42001337
thanks for running! Did Milly grow legs?
>>
>>42001376
I dunno. Will she have a reason to venture thusly?

My gut says maybe.
Thanks for coming weird name anon

Ye, was great. Thanks for coming. Also, I tend to watch the thread til it falls off. I'm obsessive like that.

>>42001427
No, she went missing. It was like the last thing he said.
>>
>>42001481
So was the role for Nytora's treatment good or bad? Also will she be able to help us search for milly next thread?
>>
>>42001481
was just wondering if her evo let her walk on land. via shedding skin.
>>
>>42001513
Neutral! There are only two results that matter. She can make time for murder. Wait.. no what do you call finding a missing person without intent to kill them?

This is hard...
>>
>>42001537
She hasn't evo'd. She was grounded due to injury so Dezzy got some solo adventure.
>>
>>42001538
When in doubt....Hey.

Captcha that was a nice of you to fit all those cuts back into a single picture.
