>You are a villager girl named Ellen from a small village in the nation of Neir, on the continent of Teege. As a member of the local militia/guard, you were trained in swordplay. Your fighting style is best compared to the mercenary class, though you're officially considered a knight of Neir.

People are closing in. Tons of them.

People you were expecting to have to dispatch earlier, that you had a bad feeling would be back for more.

Leading the charge is Simon, the very same guard whose friends, Mina and Walter, you respectively let die and then killed. Some moment of weakness left you sparing him, and now you're in this situation in a dark underground tunnel. And he's destroyed your means of teleporting when you get aboveground.

"So Prince Lars wants to have us die so your escape is more realistic... Like hell any of us are taking that from scum like you! Our prince is shit, our warden was shit, but you, you're all the worst of the bunch! We'll kill your lot, leave you to die in a dark, terrible place like you deserve!"

Two more lance-wielders approach behind him, and you know there are more to come from all sides.

Your devil sword is out and ready. Katina actually sounds... afraid, and you can't imagine Quidel, Vaga, Victoria, or Bolse feels too good about this either. Bovis, you dunno.

"Bolse-er, Bovis, er, anyway. Keep Katina safe, alright?"

Realizing that you probably shouldn't be using the Devil Sword haphazardly, you replace it with the Steel Sword from Willow's assistant.

"Quidel, Victoria, Yancy... All of you, really. Watch each other's backs, and don't let anyone kill me in particular. That's... not a selfishness thing so much as a 'we all know I'm the keystone of our manpower here' thing!"

Contrary to your instructions, Katina has quickly gotten ahold of herself and joined Bovis in shielding Bolse from something as he signs away. Opposite Bolse's group, Vaga, Yancy, and Quidel are tearing through the guards that poured in from the way you came. Really, Victoria seems to be the only one actually supporting you in particular, but the situation is... Hectic.

Simon has taken to chucking a spear at you as his allies approach you directly. You're not even certain how he keeps getting more, but you don't feel like asking.

Instead, you decide to cut the nonsense and plow through his buddies, stopping his hand from burying a spear in your face by liberating it from his arm.

He simply looks at it in shock, perhaps deliberately... Doing nothing.

You... still really don't want to kill this guy, but you understand how problematic his life will be for your own. You simply signal to Victoria for her to do the deed, switching back to your Devil Sword as you cut down the two who approached with him. They don't last very long at all, and further guards are hesitant to run right into your sword.

Someone with a bow means to do it for them when you're distracted, but Victoria manages to intercept them without much trouble.

On Bolse's path, you find about a half-dozen skeletal warriors charging at or firing at the enemies along that path.

"I don't hear any more coming from this path, boss," Vaga says, reverting to form after he throws a screaming guard and her axe into the wave being accosted by undead.

Killing them quicker for one thing. And getting out of the tunnel before more reinforcements are brought in for another. I'm not much of a fan of saving up that special weapon or attack for an "OH SHIT" moment, since you could potentially be saving it all the way up to the final boss and still not using it at that moment either. Otherwise, look at the shrugging image, anon.

That felt... You could certainly feel the uncertainty and fear of swinging the Devil Sword, the satisfaction of seeing it hurt the right people, but... This is a dangerous game to be running and you know that. You quickly return to plain old steel.

"Well, if no one else is coming from that direction, then help us through here! Bolse, try to get your bonewalkers to stir up trouble!"

Bovis conveys the message and the skeletons abandon formation to, in the layperson's terms, go apeshit on the two paths remaining.

You cross swords with another random guard, who starts talking to you mid-fight.

You decide to save indulging her clear banter-bait for until she's dying anyway, quickly overpowering the weirdly versatilely-equipped guard with sheer force, pushing her to the ground.

Without pausing, you start to approach her, saying, "I take offense to that, you know. I'm Tarvosian!"

She quickly reaches behind her back as she rests against a wall, withdrawing some sort of tome and flipping it open as you step forward, "funny, you look more like the charred remains of a pirate!"

You aren't fazed by this gesture. You don't even flinch, and your assailant doesn't get to actually cast, considering the fact that you never once stopped your approach. She must've thought you would back off when she broke out the magic, but instead the book simply falls out of her hands, becoming uselessly covered in the mage fighter's blood.

"And here I thought I'd gotten out of that life... Tell me, who the hell-" Your opponent succumbs to her own wounds before she can even finish her question, and you're already onto the next guards.

"I didn't even know they'd have mage fighters down here... What was it she was talking about, anyway?" Quidel asks, firing an arrow behind you as you fall back a bit.

"No clue, don't feel like thinking about it." You save a skeleton from a guy with an axe, Vaga transformed and hitting another person.

"Regardless, this means you all need to be careful. Why only have ONE mage fighter?"

Almost instantaneously after saying that, Bovis' head gets hit by a fireball, and a fellow dressed similarly to your recent opponent comes swinging at him. This... ends predictably.

"Er... Bovis, are you alright?"

His mask is on fire and he isn't really acknowledging it, instead being focused on watching for more opponents.

Bolse actually has to speak up to get Bovis' attention (he's turned away from the entire group, facing the incoming enemies), clearing his throat and saying, "uh, you... Don't need to keep wearing it if it's on fire."

Signing what you presume is something along the lines of "understood," he unflinchingly tears off the burning facial covering, facing a terrified guard that's running away and tossing it at them.

Eventually, they stop running.

"Er, Boss, I hear more of suicidal idiots coming in from the cell block path. Four or five of them, I think," Vaga says. "Want me to take care of them, or do you wanna help keep the heat off the rest?"

"Now, now, that's far too... over-the-top a name for someone so infatuating." And then, seconds of unamused silence later, he chortles out a "hey, I wasn't being serious."

"Yeah, I figured. Anyway, I think after I get out of here my real name should be more than enough to intimidate."

"That's only assuming any of the guards survive."

Your banter is interrupted by your stumbling upon the people Vaga must've heard. They seem to be a blond man in red armor, sporting a blue cape, a very large fellow (taller than you, perhaps, but it's hard to say from a slight distance) that appears to be clad in magenta, right down to a feather in his ear, dark hair styled and curled forward, and a darker-skinned girl with an axe at her side, sporting a red bandanna.

"I... don't suppose we can get out of this without a fight, can we?"

The blond sage, apparently the leader of the group, responds, "that depends entirely... What have you done with the prisoners?"

Now Vaga speaks up, "you're looking at them, pretty boy. And if you wanna get through the rest fighting way over there, I'm afraid I won't be terribly interested in letting you pass."

The blond sighs, "I... assume that means you're not one of the guards."

"I... think that was kind of obvious, buddy."

"Well, yes, Bryce, but it's not like people can't try to fool us."

Behind you, a voice softly says, "their story checks out. It looks like sir Bolse and lady Katina are that way, fighting through guards with-"

This naturally startles the shit out of you both, turning around to see a woman in thieflike robes, an assortment of lighter weapons presumably hidden beneath.

"They got to his sister, too?! Gods, we've been on this case for so long we've missed important details."

The axe-wielding girl asks, "...can we just go? We still have a job to do."

Blondie nods, turning around, "er, Devon, it's safe."

From further back, a plain-looking girl with brown hair tied to one side steps out, holding a staff in one hand and a little redheaded girl's hand in the other.

"May we?" The pompadoured fellow, Bryce apparently, asks.

The little girl says, "I'm... getting really tired. Can someone carry me?"

"I'll do you one better, princess!" Bryce then proceeds to run his hands along his hair, striking a pose. Some sort of... odd, discordant noise that you THINK is supposed to be vaguely musical fills the air around you, and everyone feels... Reinvigorated.

Bryce nods, "put us to work awhile ago, but it took a lot more effort and kid-saving to save her kid than we'd expected."

"Right, right... What the hell was that, though? I mean, whatever... whatever you did?"

"A bard can throw his magic around in any musical way. I just decided to throw a bit more magic into it, really make my stuff unique, show off my hair in the process."

Up ahead, you hear Yancy say, "sounds like far more than four feet... Maybe they've died?"

"No, they wouldn't... Not after we've come this far, Ellen wouldn't," Victoria adds.

"Miles... actually came?" Victoria actually sounds a bit surprised.

Bovis is still standing close to Bolse, looking forward and holding a torch as the latter tries to figure out how to unsummon undead. Ultimately, he just gives up. Until they die, three bonewalkers are traveling with the party.

"Hey, you six, it's safe to come through!"

The newcomers do so, with many a shocked glance being exchanged.

"D-duchess Victoria? You're alive?" Miles-you assume that's who the blond is now-stammers out, Devon looking similarly surprised after Miles puts the name to the face.

"I'm... I never thought I would see anyone from Noba ever a-" she eyes the axe-wielder. "Laurina, right? When did you end up with the Great Miles Mercenaries?"

"When did you start looking your personality?" The harshness of the comment is mitigated by an oddly... happy tone.

"I haven't seen you since you abandoned me to run off with some cavaliers."

"Yeah, that... didn't work out. I met these guys through them, though."

Noticing you slow down on the "introduction" track, Vaga picks up the pace, "Vaga, Quidel, Katina, Victoria, expendable skeleton trio. The one she called 'Bo' is actually called Bolse."

"Urgh... What have they done to his ears?" Miles asks, before adding, "wait, don't tell me until the princess can't hear it."

"What? No, it's... really not very romantic to fight. Where did you get that idea, though?"

"My sister talks about prince Garrus all the time like that, and she hasn't even met him, so he must be super beautiful. I think she just ran away to try to marry him or something, but she said it's not about that."

"Are you sure it didn't have to do with your grandfather locking you away? Seems a bit bigger a deal than chasing some far-off prince you've just only heard is a nice guy," Vaga says.

"Big sisters are weird."

"You're telling me, princess."

Your party walks awhile longer, every once in awhile Bryce reinvigorating you with that weird trick of his. It's still a ways to Traban Outpost, but you seem to have taken care of everyone who could possibly know you're here.

You, Vaga, and Victoria ultimately share the idea of keeping watch from behind. It's not like it's an impossibility that you'll be followed just because the guards have been slain down to the last man.

Further behind you just slightly are the skeletons. On them, Vaga says, "they seem... nice."

"I'm sure if you asked Bolse nicely, he'd let you chew on one of them."

"Listen here, boss... That... actually doesn't sound like a bad idea."

He runs off ahead. Snickering with Victoria, you turn to face each other, sharing some stories about your respective lives. Victoria still doesn't want to dwell on the most turbulent portion of her life just yet, but she still shares a story about her time before losing her throne. She actually brings up a humorous anecdote about how she was actually betrothed to Miles, though they barely knew each other even when they were both in positions of importance in the same country, and how she'd actually sort of forgotten who that was supposed to be by the time she'd heard that Duke Kilos had cast his son away for... well, you've met Devon. She stops herself when she catches herself musing about how different things might have been "if only she'd been set up with Lord Phineas," not wanting to make herself sad. What tales do you share?

You decide to share a tale from your time traveling around the Johan region of Neir after Orsin Village fell. Namely, you tell the story of your victory over Tabat, and how in that moment, you... You very briefly felt what Princess Kia meant, about battles being this beautiful thing. You'd been at the forefront of the destruction of a very dangerous organization.

Yet... with what you saw just a little while ago, you can't fairly say that your friend was avenged, even when disregarding Stefyn having been the one to do the deed.

"And why's that, Ellen? Go on, please kill the mood."

"Have you gotten a good look at Bovis? Well, I guess you wouldn't know what he looked like anyway..."

"Oh, I... I see. And you're... certain this Bovis, he's..."

"I couldn't believe it at a first glance, but... I've known Lambert all my life. Bovis is... was... him."

"And considering what I've heard him say about Equus... Are our destinies so intertwined that we've both had such close loves lose their eternal rest to this foul strain of necromancy?"

"Well, er, not in the way you're thinking of," you say, expressing your discomfort with the idea, "we've been raised together since before I can remember. My father died and my mom was taken away by... Koblenz thought it was bandits, but point is he raised me and his son together. Lambert was my brother, more than anything else. Still, though, I... get what you mean, and whoever forced Bolse to do this... I can't ever forgive them, no matter who they are."

"You're very resolute. It reminds me very much of Lord Phineas."

"What was he like?"

"Oh, he was... Normally, the reputation of a noble far exaggerates who they are, but... he was an empathetic, passionate soul. Didn't have much of a mind for politics, so he was going to abdicate his birthright to his younger sister anyway, but if any man was so genuine as him, let alone in his position, I... can't say I've ever met them."

"And his sister?"

"She's... also nice. More pragmatic, he always said she had a better understanding of consequence. The best way to put it is that she is the leader to his champion."

Vaga returns after this, actually picking up and chewing on one of the bonewalkers' arms. It doesn't really react much to this, since it wasn't using that one for swinging a sword around anyway.

"I... wasn't being serious, Vaga."

He takes the bone out of his mouth. "Oh, I know. It was just something I've been curious about." Vaga just sort of lets go of the bone where it once hovered unconnected from the rest of the bones, where it just sort of... Returns to being in place, but with slight amounts of saliva glistening from it for a little while. Finally, he adds, "it actually tastes awful when you actually try to savor it."

After awhile, you catch up to Miles and the rest. In front of them is a set of stairs and a locked trapdoor, the latter of which Asra is already working at. "I got it..."

Miles tells the group, "alright, now, if what Princess Eva told us is true, this comes out just outside of Traban Outpost's own temporary holding cells. Asra, I'm counting on you to scout ahead, return to us with ideas of who's where. We'll come after you if you're gone for longer than an hour."

Asra returns after... you weren't keeping track of time yourself, but no one really said much aside from Miles' detention center comment. Kia actually got tired again and fell asleep, and is now being carried around by the big bard, Bryce.

Devon asks, "How's it looking?"

Asra responds, "even better than expected. A mercenary on the edge of town claims that Princess Eva told him about the underground tunnel here, and that we would probably be coming through soon. He is accompanied by... six garou, all women. They claim that they followed another garou here, but didn't feel safe taking action until someone who knew where to go came by."

Quidel snickers, "oh my gods they actually came."

"Hey, I never doubted my hunnies would really try for me!" Vaga brags, before saying, "did I worry that they wouldn't survive? Maybe. But I had faith in them!"

Laurina just gives nobody in particular a look of slight exasperation with her new acquaintance. Katina looks at Vaga as though he's the coolest of things, perhaps having already moved onto a new childish infatuation.

"Do you think these 'hunnies' will be able to vouch for you back home if you confront Ahua and Canis? I mean, they're not going to listen to Tarvosians, so it'd be up to them to..."

"Sadly, I figure that they've all been turned into pariahs for following me. I mean, maybe we can seek asylum in Rakche, but... Gods, I hope King Drasma doesn't buy a word of what she's said."

Moving on, you ask Asra about this mercenary.

"He says that Princess Eva figured that someone actually from Dain would be best-suited for getting people from there, and that he was 'probably going to head this way anyway after his business with the prince was done.'"

That sounds like... Bah, you'll be able to confirm your suspicions in a moment's time. For now, you ask another important question: what's the plan?

It's a fairly simple trick involving the bonewalkers, having them, effectively, dance their way through town and distract as many people as possible. Well, the actual plan was a bit more nuanced than that, but it made things significantly easier.

True to your suspicions as you get out of Traban Outpost, the mercenary sent by Eva was none other than your mentor.

"The Great Miles are earlier than the princess said they would be. I figure that's your doing?"

"Well, it was a group effort, but I guess I sort of... kickstarted things by killing Captain Willow. Shit, you said that she was your friend's mom, didn't you?"

"He'll be more steamed about it than me, I guess. Even though he recognized that his mother was one of the worst human beings he'd ever met, he'd always loved her dearly, even back then. He's the same way about his brothers, but I don't think that they ever became outright war criminals after leaving the nest."

"This is the... second time I've killed someone you knew really well after we parted ways, isn't it?"

Gorman actually finds this somewhat amusing, considering the nature of both people involved. "I suppose it is. Guess I can't think about settling down until you're six feet under, hmm?"

"And Mus disappeared after the raid on the temple... Probably scurried back to Gravern or something."

"Oh, yeah, how did that go?"

"...poorly. The mission was a success, a deadlord was slain, and Simia and the Vautou could very well ally with the Mage General one day, but it still went poorly."

From there, you, Quidel, and the rest of the party are filled in on the tragic passing of King Drasma, and the even more potentially tragic passing-of-the-torch that was Khozen flying off with the Staff of Katri. He also mentions that Tigris was Tabat.

For awhile you're just... silent. Then, you find yourself saying, "so now he's killed the very same guy who saved his life in the mountains."

Quidel of all people says, "er, I think you're being a bit unfairly vindict-"

"Let me finish, Quidel. I was saying that... Really, I don't like necromancy at all, even when I can just wear a ring not to be made sick by it. It's just... caused a constant string of tragedies. Hell, Tabat only became what he did after they used his daughter for it. Absolutely not excusing the bastard for it, but..."

One of Vaga's lady friends asks if that's what Chief Loba became, to which he can only solemnly nod.

"That paladin by the name of Equus, the one I'd seen wandering Gravern Keep aimlessly... Was that what was done to Phineas?" Miles clenches his fists, "and my father just... let it happen. He just... let Malva happen."

Devon, sitting by him, takes his hand and smiles, saying, "you'll get your birthright back, Miles. You've done so much good, proven yourself so many times over... Maybe if we were to return with the lance Dandev, bring it to Duke Philemon over in Phile, along with news of the Great Miles Company's other actions..."

Bryce asks again after that, saying, "you've known her for... how many days has she been in Aum?"

"One, I think..? Time feels weird when you're stuck underground."

Gorman responds helpfully, "it's been four."

"Anyway," Bryce continues, "she's a big girl, Victoria. A knight, if I heard correctly. You can see her again some time in the future, I'm sure."

Miles responds to Bryce by saying, "Bryce, you know that soon, if not already, there'll be plenty of heat on us in Dain, we can't risk traveling inland all the way to Noba. If we want to get there fast, we're going to have to call in that favor from the Dories to travel through Ulir, and even then we'll need someone else to deliver Bolse, Katina, and princess Kia East."

"Hey, we have reason to head East," Vaga says, "you guys can do what you like. Just try to repay the favor whenever things get heavy in the near future."

Yancy nods, adding, "I would bring the twins to Elza Oasis anyway, you don't even need to ask."

Bryce fiddles with the feather in his ear, "anyway, we're sort of breaking the point here. Victoria, will you come with us, even knowing we'll have to go through pirate hell to get to Noba any time soon?"

Victoria pauses again, "I would like to, but... There's few ways that I can still be called an honorable woman, and I hope to preserve my word at the damn least. The only way I'll even entertain the idea of passing through Ulir is if Ellen does, which I'm... certain she doesn't."

Ever since Mimon-er, Lars-mentioned the apparent glorified watery grave, something about it has... stuck in your head. And who are the "Dories?"

Is it really worth postponing your return to Neir just for Victoria's sake, though?

While the idea is... tempting, and you feel like you might learn a lot of things about yourself and the continent around you, you don't actually consider it for a very long time at all.

"Sorry, Victoria."

"Oh, no, no apologies, please. I don't even think I'm ready to head back Southwest."

Miles adds, "I really didn't want to ask the Dories for help just yet anyways... Dvdnea will stay under our protection until we can safely deliver it back to the Duke of Phile. Everyone, get as much rest as possible tonight, because I have little faith that we can stay in this country for long. We set out for Elza Oasis first thing tomorrow morning."

Miles and Devon retire to their own tent shortly after that. Laurina, passing by, tells Victoria, "I'm... sort of glad you're not dead."

"That... must be the sweetest thing you have ever said."

The night is long, but the short amounts of sleep you can get are more restful than the combined time you spent asleep in Aum.

Thanks a bunch. Next thread should be... Saturday, I believe.

It'll probably not be too intense of a chapter, getting most of the plot development that the part'll provide out of the way in the first act or so and making way for character interactions on the knights' side, mainly for whoever the POV character turns out to be, obviously.

I might just pick someone for it to be ahead of time, or at least limit the playable choices more than the first two knights threads, considering that only a few people will actually have reason to know the things that are being established in said first act.
