Vela moves toward you, entering the circle of stones purposefully. Emma grips your hand with hers, blood still slick on her skin despite her wound having sealed. She looks at the human girl, narrowing her eyes. You give the kitsune a gentle, reassuring squeeze and a smile.

"It's all right, Emma. Don't worry."

"Nadia, I-"

You lean forward, pressing your lips lightly to her brow. The shift in your weight buries your feet deeper into the warm white sand, still warm from the sun's passage even now, as the moon hangs overhead. Emma bites her lip, her tails flicking irritably.

"We'll talk after, okay?"

She looks once more to Vela, then to you, before nodding and backing away toward the stones. Djanna leans down as Emma reaches up, hefting your littlest sister up onto her seat. Vela stops opposite you, facing the Elder. The light of the torches gutters in a sudden chill breeze from the sea, teasing your fur and her hair. She looks similar in size and form to you - an adolescent human, you would guess. Her scars, and trophies, speak to her experience.

"Vela. I will ask once. There is no way to sway you from this course?" The Elder asks, leaning down toward the two of you, concern deepening the lines on his face. Vela shakes her head, looking crosswise at you. The Elder sighs and nods. "Then, Nadia. You accept this challenge in good faith, admitting your wrongdoing?"

You nod, clenching a fist beside you and staring determinedly at your feet.

"Then, let it be so... and when it is done, let there be peace between you."

You nod, turning to face Vela and she to you. There is determination in her eyes, but strangely, no anger. It seems there's no emotion to her at all as she stretches out both her arms, fists held loosely as she sways lightly.

"I will make certain when we are done that you will remember his name till the day you die."

Okay, maybe there's some emotion...

She moves first, snapping out with her hand in a lazy swing, trying to goad you into dodging. You know better, though - you remember using this same kind of move against Djanna during training. You step back out of range, and she shifts forward to close the gap, squaring her shoulders toward you. She strikes out with a kick this time, two quick taps against your legs that, if you were weaker, might have hurt, but again it's just a feint. She follows up with the other leg, driving it toward your midsection, and you quickly bat it aside, dancing backward out of her range as she follows your path.

She's still herding you, pressing the attack, but you're still free for the time being - she hasn't backed you into a corner. Her eyes are focused, her every muscle tight. You can feel the heat from the torches as she dances around the ring with you, the shifting of the sand underfoot and the slowly circling lights behind her, in your peripheral vision, bright and red in contrast to the dim silver of the stars and the fat yellow of the moon overhead join together with the shadowy forms observing you from atop the rocks to cast something strange over you. The girl, dusted with ash and black lines of greasepaint drawn down her cheeks, seems something more than flesh as she relentlessly pursues you across the shifting arena, swiping and striking at you, harrying you from wall to wall, unable to land a blow.

Finally, something changes. She lunges, striking down at your head with her fist, the sound of it passing cutting the air as you snap back, her knee rising where your stomach had been just a second before. Her methodical movements replaced with purpose and power. Emma and Djanna look on, Emma as though ready to leap to your defense, Djanna observing carefully, one hand on the kitsune's shoulder. And all around them, the shadowy forms of the headmen, only the Elder cast in light, looking on in grim concentration.

"It wasn't... he was berserk too! He was every bit the animal I was!"

"That's no excuse! Kiva was a hothead, but you... you!" She snarls and drives forward, overshooting her aim. You wrap your arms around her, intending to take her down, but your foot slips in the sand and Vela doesn't miss the advantage. She slips her foot behind yours, pressing her hip to yours and using her leverage to shove you over onto your back, following your descent and planting her knee in your stomach. She pulls back her fist, and you see now. The glistening you had mistaken for simply the greasepaint on her face is tears, falling in an unchecked torrent down her cheeks.

Then, your vision explodes with stars, and pain floods your head.

You're dimly aware of pressure through the waves of agony, of somebody screaming your name, but your head is swimming and you feel somewhat disconnected from reality at the moment. You hear the sound of the waves ebbing and flowing against the shore. You feel your brands cold, but you know - somehow - that all it would take to call on Yra's fury is a whisper... an oath, or a prayer.

No... no, that's not right. That's not who you are. That's not what you want.

You feel something fall on your cheek, an inky teardrop streaking through the thin fur, leaving a black trail.

Well, if it's just the few of us, I'll finish up the fight at least, and probably hold anything more weighty for regular time next week.

Going to follow up with attacks, or try to reason with her?
>>
>>42015640
Reason but be ready to defend. Neither f us had control. Hell we almost killed our sisters in blind rage. It was our fault but neither of us were ourselves. With 2 berserkers there it'd have only ended in blood.

You shake your head quickly, regaining your focus. You can't smell it, but you can taste the blood flowing from your nose. You buck hard against her, enough to shift her off base. You pull up your leg, planting your foot against the sand and shoving up and over, rolling a surprised Vela onto the sand with a snarl. She comes down hard, but doesn't have time to recover as you plant your palms flat on her shoulders, the top of your feet over her knees, your hips over hers.

"Listen! Listen... I'm sorry... I'm sorry, but hurting me won't bring him back..."

"You think I don't know that!" She shouts, glaring daggers into your eyes. "You think that's what this is about, you bitch!? You think I want to hurt you just because you killed Kiva!? I know he was an insufferable, tempermental, faithless bastard, but he was my mate and whatever that meant to him, it meant everything to me!"

She jerks suddenly, shifting your arm. You don't lose your grip, or your leverage, but she gains just enough to bend her neck down and sink her teeth into your hand. You snarl, but don't pull back, determined to keep her pinned. You feel your bones crunch and your skin break, before she finally pulls back, sinking defeated back onto the sand. "I just want you to remember him... I want somebody besides me to hurt because of his loss."

Writing.

>>42015880
Every time I call on Yra's gifts I will always be afraid I could lose control and kill someone like I did Kiva. I remember he was arrogant and strong. I remember how humble he was when we met him again, and how eager he was to prove himself. I remember the bloody mess, I made him into, and doubt I will ever be able to forget that.

"You think I won't?" You look down at her, your eyes wide and quivering. You grip her shoulders tightly, sinking down against her, your shoulders hunched, tail laying flat against her legs. "He... I remember meeting him. He was an arrogant bastard... but when he came to help with the dragon, he was humble. He actually..."

She simply lays quiet beneath you, absorbing your words as your blood mingles with the sweat and ash on her skin. "He was the first... person... I hurt. The first one I... I'll carry that till the day I die. I can't ever apologize enough for... Now whenever I try to heal somebody, whenever I try to help them, I'm going to see his face... see what I left of him..."

Vela frowns up at you, considering for a moment before she nods. "That's enough, then... now get off of me." She shifts as you move off of her, rising slowly to her feet and turning to the Elder.

"You are satisfied, Vela?" She nods at the Elder's words, turning and walking back toward the village. Emma and Djanna are on you in a moment, the kitsune cradling your hand and Djanna tutting as she tilts your face to the torchlight, examining your nose. One by one, the headmen break off and set off into the shadows, either heading back toward the village or off to be on their own. Your eyes follow Vela past the dock, through the village, and into the tall seed grasses beyond, until she's out of sight.

"Nadia... " Emma frowns, tearing a bit of her shirt away and wrapping your hand carefully. She whimpers softly, looking up at Djanna.

"It's definitely broken..." She shakes her head, her tail thumping against the ground. "We have to find some meat for you, or something to splint it with..."

You nod softly, whining and wincing. The Elder slowly descends from his seat and moves toward you. "Everything is settled now... let us see to getting you healed..."

To hell with real life. I got called into work. I'll be running Prinny Sunday.

What joint you work at? I hope it's not Freddy's Pizzaria. Also I feel ya. I've been called over to cover closing shifts often during my brief stint at Little Caesars.
