>Last time, you gave the young girl you saved a name, a home, and most importantly, a hug. A few weeks later, you decided to go to your first karate lesson at Ichigo’s dojo- only to find your blood boiling at the prospect of bullies. After promptly punching the lights out of the biggest kid there, you told Ichigo exactly who he should believe in.

Your name is Uryu Ishida, six years old. You are currently trying to stalk your way through the forest along the edge of the Ishida estate, led only by your mother.

You squint, attempting to see through the darkness. Unfortunately, you weren’t blessed with good night vision; you can only make out the image of your mother, gently leading you by your hand. “Mom,” you whisper softly, “you’re still there, right?”

“Yes, Uryu, I’m still here. Don’t worry, I’ll answer any questions you have when we get there,” your mother says, “I’m sure you have quite a few. Watch your step,” she gestures towards the forest floor, specifically at a large root you almost tripped over. You obediently step over the root then try to make out any other obstacles in the tangled path you had been taking.

Your mother was certainly right when she said you had a few questions. After all, she had woken you up in what was practically the middle of the night, asking you if you wanted to see something. Curiosity piqued, you had acquiesced, and now here you were- walking through the forest at somewhere around midnight.

Suddenly, your mother stops in her tracks. You do the same, glancing at her as she bends down into the dirt.

Whispering a few words of what you believe is German, she stands back up, and pulls something out of her pocket. After unscrewing the cap, you see that it was a small silver tube. The contents of the tube glistened with a strange bluish glow, the brightness intensifying as your mother drops the contents onto the ground below.

The world seems to slow down as the droplet of bluish liquid drips onto the dirt. You cover your eyes as the light intensifies even further, though you manage to spy the small patterns tracing themselves into the dirt and trees. “You can open your eyes now, Uryu.” You do so, and what you see makes you gasp.

What had once been another grouping of trees, seemingly unidentifiable from the rest of the forest, was now a large clearing. The moonlight seems to reflect off of every little thing, brightening up the area almost as if it were day, though viewed through a silver filter. “Look up,” your mother whispers into your ear.

What you see only makes your eyes widen. You see the entirety of the night sky laid out before you, far brighter than anywhere else you’d seen them, in Karakura or elsewhere. “Wow…” you say, breathless. Even the moon was beautiful- rather than outshining the rest of the sky, it only added to the ambience.

You think about asking your mother what she had done, but in the end you decide to just continue your gaping. Your eyes flicker back and forth, trying to recognize all of the constellations that you can see. You remember reading this book on them.

Your mother pulls you over to a conveniently-placed stump in the very middle of the clearing. Whatever tree that had been growing there once upon a time must have been quite old; it was large enough to seat you and your mother side-by-side. You decided to sit on your mom’s lap, still staring skywards. “Want to ask those questions a little later?” Mother whispers into your ear. Absently, you nod.

Nothing disturbed your stargazing; the soft natural sounds of the woods melted into nothing. Even the forest itself barely seemed anything more than a dream in comparison to the stars above; the silver glare of the moonlight only reinforced the idea that you might have been dreaming.

You don’t know how long you were sitting there for, entranced by the perfect view. It must have been quite a while, because your mother squeezes you gently to check if you’re still awake. You make a noise in response.

After staring for a little while longer, you feel the urge to say something, anything. “I wonder what it’s like up there. In the stars.” You say.

“I’m sure you’ll find out someday, Uryu.”

“You think so?” You ask, not thinking that your mother would actually respond.

“I’m sure that you will, if you put your heart and soul into it.” You nod in response. Maybe you will see those stars up close someday. That would be an adventure, you think.

“Is Soul Society somewhere up there?” You ask. Ever since you had heard about the strange place from your Grandfather, you had wondered quite a bit about it. Besides it being the palce where souls go after death, you had often wondered if maybe it was just somewhere really high up- maybe on another planet entirely.

(1/?)
>>
>>42030681

“Not from what I know of, no.” Your mother answers for you. “Although, I have heard that they apparently can see the very same stars that we can here.” Briefly, you wonder how Mother could possibly know that, but you brush the thought away.

“Uryu, do you know why I brought you here?” That’s not a question your supposed to answer, you think. One of those re-something questions. Thus, you stay silent. Your mother continues, “In less than a year, you will begin your Quincy training will begin, as Ishida-sama promised. If you ever feel lonely when you’re out here, without myself or your father or even your friends…” She trails off. You think you can get the picture though.

‘You can always come here.’

“You’re acting like I’ll be gone tomorrow,” You say.

“I’d rather that you know of this place sooner rather than later. And I don’t believe you regret coming here, do you?” You shake your head.

“What is ‘this place’ anyway? It’s really well-hidden and everything; I couldn’t even see it before you opened the way.”

Your mother hums in thought before responding. Gesturing towards the entire clearing, she says, “This place was once another training ground for the Ishida family. However, it was thought to be lost until your father managed to find it again in an accident.

“Your father adapted it to his own purposes soon enough. If I recall the story correctly, he and Ishida-sama had an argument earlier that day and Ryuuken had decided to train out here to ‘let out some steam,’ so to speak. As a result, rather than restoring it to a proper training ground, your father instead changed the defenses and enchantments so that he could have a place all to his own.” Your mother smiles at the memory, seemingly finding it amusing.

“So Father and Grandfather both know of this place?” You interrupt.

“Your father does, yes. However, he never ‘got around’ to telling Ishida-sama precisely where this place is, nor how to bypass its defenses.” Your mother lets out a soft chuckle. “Personally, I believe that was intentional on his part.”

“So Grandfather knows of it, but can’t get in?” Your mother nods. “What about anyone else?”

Your mother shakes her head. “No one else knows of this place, no. Only your father, myself, and now you.” She smiles, holding you closer.

“Um, you’ll teach me how to get in, right?”

“Of course, Uryu. It won’t take you very long to learn, I promise. Although…” Your mother hums in thought. “Is there anyone else you’d like to show this place to Uryu? I would be willing to show them too.”

Your answer is instant. “I want to bring Usagi here sometime.” You say, thinking of your sister. She’d probably like it here. It’s quiet and peaceful, and if she wanted, she could probably bring along one of the rabbits she had befriended to play with.

Your mother seems to hesitate before asking, “Are you sure about that, Uryu? What about your friends?”

…You aren’t sure, but you think her tone might have been a little disapproving. “Yes,” you say firmly, crossing your arms in defiance. “She should know, she’s my sister, even if she’s technically adopted. She’d really like the view here, I think. As for the rest of my friends, I’ll bring them here when I finish my training.”

Your mother lets out a soft breath at your stubborn response. She smiles, though you can see the slight strain at the edge of her lips. Seems you were right. “If that’s what you’d like to do Uryu, that’s fine.”

(1/?)
>>
>>42031851

You frown. You don’t understand why your family still doesn’t like Usagi. Sure, they’re not directly abusive- you’d have immediately thrown up a fit if they were- but, well, the best way to say it is that they just aren’t there. Sure, your mother gives Usagi a piece of candy whenever the three of you head to the supermarket, and she lets Usagi ride with you to your karate lessons, but you never see your parents really talk with her.

It’s completely unfair, you think. The worst part of it was that Usagi didn’t even want to do anything about it. ‘I don’t want to be a bother,’ she had said. Humph.

Maybe she was a little clingy, but she wasn’t a bother by any means. She was pretty good at tag-better than Ichigo at least, though to be fair, everyone’s better than Ichigo- and she was nice.

Your mother seems to have noticed your declining mood, because her hold on you slacks a little and she says, “I’m sorry Uryu. I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just-“

“You still don’t trust her.” You finish. Your mother is silent. Well, that’s just fine. Your family could distrust her all they like- you were going to tell her and that was that. You look back up at the stars.

As your mind wanders, you think that it would definitely be worth traching Usagi everything you know about the stars, too. She’d appreciate it.

The next month or so passes by in a blur. You and your mother go out every so often to look at the stars, you bringing Usagi along whenever she was willing, and you continue heading to the dojo with Ichigo and Tatsuki. The next major event in your life was…

You fidget around in your seat of the car, impatient. “Are we there yet?” You ask petulantly.

“We’re almost there, Uryu. In fact, I believe that’s it right… there!” Your mother points out the window and you immediately press your head against the cool glass. At first glance, it doesn’t really seem like much. The sign of course, says ‘Kurosaki Clinic,’ just as Ichigo had said.

You marvel a little at the similarities between you and Ichigo. Both of your mothers were Quincies, both of your fathers practiced medicine (though you aren’t sure where Ichigo’s father had graduated from) and now, both of you even had little sisters! The two of you were even the same age!

Though you were definitely the older boy in spirit, if not in actual chronological age. Hah!

You furrow your brow, thinking of the best way to greet Ichigo’s parents. Even though you’d seen Mrs. Kurosaki every so often, you’d never actually spoken with her much and you’d never seen her husband at all, though apparently your parents were acquainted with the man. Your father had told you to mind your manners and greet them politely. Unfortunately, that approach came with one simple problem:

It was boring. So, what to do…? Oh! Yeah, that’s a good idea. If you’re going to be polite, you’re going to be polite in your own way, you think! The plan quickly reveals itself in your mind’s eye as you step out of the car, grinning.

Waving goodbye to your mother as she drives off in the car, you gesture towards Usagi to stay quiet. After making sure that your mother was well out of earshot, you take a deep breath, and say:

“LORD KUROSAKI! WE DOTH ASK FOR AN AUDIENCE!” You shout, still grinning like a loon. “’TIS AN URGENT MATTER!” Running up to the front door, you promptly ring the doorbell once, then again.

A beat passes as you and Usagi wait. And then another. And another…

Finally, the door opens, and you see…
>A tall, middle-aged man who looks like he could use a shave. “Ah,” you say, bowing low, “the Lord Kurosaki, I presume?”

…A tall, middle-aged man looking back down at you, seeming somewhat confused. Looking at him, you immediately think that he could use a shave to wipe away some of his stubble (for some reason, the nick-name ‘goat-chin’ immediately springs to mind, though you think that’s a little rude) and that he doesn’t really look much like Ichigo.

Still, proper courtesy is to be extended to anyone whom you meet. “Ah,” you say, bowing low, “the Lord Kurosaki, I presume?” Getting back up, you smile cheerfully, attempting to exude every ounce of childish innocence you possibly could. “I am the Prince Ishida,” You puff your chest out proudly in a fit of fake-posturing, “though you may of course, merely call me Uryu. And this,” you gesture towards your sister, “is Usagi Ishida, the most beautiful Princess in Karakura, and my most esteemed sister! Say hi, Usagi!”

Neither your sister nor the man reacts to your proclamation, though the former is more likely due to her incessant shyness, while the latter just seems… baffled.

You decide to break the awkward silence. “Er, hello?” You say, waving your hand. “Like I said, I’m Uryu. Uryu Ishida. This is my sister. We were sort of hoping to see Ichigo? Hello?”

Finally, the man seems to snap out of whatever stupor he was in and responds, “YOU’RE Uryu?” He asks, still sounding bewildered. You nod, and at that the man starts. “You’re so different from your father… er, sorry. Ah, give me a second.” The man suddenly closes the door on you, only to open right back up, looking far more enthusiastic. “Welcome to the Kurosaki Clinic!” He says, throwing his hands up. “I’m Isshin Kurosaki! You’re here to see Ichigo, right? Take the hallway in the back, then the stairs up. He should be in his room.” He sweeps the two of you inside quickly. He leads you and Usagi down the hallway.

After the three of you slip inside the Kurosaki residence proper, you take a glance around, seeing Mrs. Kurosaki looking back at the three of you, though she seems to be staring at her husband in particular.

“Welcome, Prince Ishida!” She says, smiling. “Our esteemed son, Ichigo, is upstairs, working on important work. However, I’m sure he can open some time for you if you’d ask.” She nods waving you away towards the stairs. “As for my husband, I really only have one thing to say: ‘I told you so.’ Now go clean the dishes.”

At those last words, Ichigo’s father literally seems to deflate. “Yeah, yeah… How? I can see the resemblance, but they’re polar opposites…” Isshin’s quiets as he steps into the kitchen to work on the chore. You decide to go upstairs into Ichigo’s room.

You grin, yet another devious plan coming to mind. After quickly shushing Usagi(not that she wasn’t quiet before), you slowly turn the doorknob to Ichigo’s room. Opening it inch by inch, you manage to open it up just enough that you can wriggle in without making a sound.

You silently crouch down after slipping inside. You aren’t sure if Ichigo’s mother had taught him to detect Reishi, but just in case, you conceal what little spiritual pressure you have.

You scan the room, taking in everything. You see Ichigo at a desk that looked a little large for him, sitting in one of those swivel chairs that looked very large for him. He was studiously writing something down; it was probably his homework. You shake your head sadly, thankful that you’re homeschooled and don’t have to do any homework as long as you managed to absorb whatever lesson your family had tried teaching you.

After taking note of the rest of his room- Ichigo’s bed on one side, a small mat in a corner, a closet in another corner- you slip past him, lining yourself up in the perfect position.

Leaping from your position in a flying tackle, you shout: “HEY ICHIGO! THINK FAST!”

>Ichigo rolled: 73 vs. DC70
>Bare Success!

Imagine your surprise when Ichigo suddenly rolls out from his chair, seemingly entirely from instinct , leading you to comically fly over the chair and into Ichigo’s bed on the other side of the room.

SMACK!

“Oww…” you grunt, rubbing your head. You hear a creak as Ichigo’s door flies open, your sister rushing in with a panicked “Nii-san!?”

“Ouch… What did you think you were doing, Ishida?” scowls Ichigo from his position on the floor. Apparently, his dodge wasn’t nearly as painlessly perfect as it looked; he was rubbing at an elbow.

You smile at him from his bed in response. “Why, I was just TESTING you, Ichigo! You know, just to make sure you weren’t going soft on me! It’s the least I can- gah…” you wince, cutting off your exuberant reply, rubbing your head.

“Yeah well, look at where your ‘test’ got us, Uryu. Now we’re both hurt…” says Ichigo, though his smile betrays his tone. “Well, whatever,” he sighs, “I got the better of you for once, so I’ll count that as my win.”

Your sister doesn’t seem nearly as forgiving of your stunt. “That was a bad thing to do, Nii-san! You got hurt… And Ichigo-san did too!” After patting your injury and asking if you were alright, Usagi tut-tuts and says that she would go ask Ichigo’s parents if they had a spare ice-pack for both of you.

After your sister leaves, you and Ichigo stare at each other for a second, holding your respective battle scars, only to burst into laughter. “I’ll admit,” you say, your grin back full force, “you really got me good with that dodge of yours. You’ve been practicing?”

“Yeah. Tatsuki-chan said she took pity on me getting smacked around by you all the time, so she decided to give me some extra help.” Ichigo grimaces, though not out of pain from the injury. “It definitely helped, but I think I might have heightened pain tolerance to go on with my reflexes.” You nod in sympathy. Tatsuki’s blows HURT when they landed.

“Say, remember that I told you to ask your Mom about all this Quincy stuff?” you say, switching places with Kurosaki, taking the swivel chair for your own. “You did ask her, right?”

“Well, yeah…”says Ichigo lounging about on his bed. “She actually backed you up on everything you said. Well, except for some of the Shinigami stuff.”

“Which Shinigami stuff? I thought I had everything right.” You frown. Your family had given you scant information on Shinigami, but you were pretty sure they wouldn’t lie to you about any of it.

“Well, I guess you weren’t wrong, but you left some stuff out. Um, probably not intentionally, right?” He looks at you, and you shake your head. You told him everything you knew about Shinigami. “Yeah, that’s what I thought. Apparently, while the Shinigami did wipe out almost all of the Quincies, they actually had a pretty good reason for it. I didn’t really get the specifics, but apparently Quincies just completely destroy souls rather than send them where they belong after fighting them, unlike the Shinigami. Apparently that could destroy the world.” Ichigo shrugs. “I dunno- after hearing what Mom had to say, it seemed a little like the Quincies were in the wrong, although Mom still uses her powers for self-defense.”

You hum in thought, absorbing the new information. You don’t really know what to think, to be honest. You’d been living as a Quincy for as long as you could remember, and when your grandfather had first told you that there were no other Quincies left because someone had wiped them out, you’d thought that they were just terrible people and the Quincies didn’t deserve to die.

“Well, it seems like both sides were pretty terrible.” You say, frowning. “I mean, the Shinigami just slaughtered an entire race for wanting to protect themselves and wanting revenge, but the Quincies…” you shake your head. “I don’t think it’s worth destroying the world or whatever just for that, I guess.”

You shrug. “I dunno, it seems like we don’t have a lot of information on the whole thing, besides what our parents told us. Either way…” You trail off, an idea forming in your head.

“What are you thinking about now?” asks Ichigo, eyeing you warily, eyebrow raised.

“Whaaaat? Me? I’m not thinking about anything. Even if I were, how would you guess?”

Ichigo rolls his eyes. “You get this look on your face. That’s how I know. So spit it out before we both get in trouble.”

You pout. “You’re no fun, Ichigo. Anyway, I was just thinking about asking Urahara-san about all of this. He seemed pretty smart.”

Ichigo tilts his head in confusion. “Urahara? The candy shop guy? What would he know about Quincies and Shinigami?” Oh, that’s right. Ichigo didn’t actually know about your check-up; it was after the first time you’d met, and it had mostly drifted from your mid. You give Ichigo a quick synopsis of your trip to the candy shop, making sure to add in the quality of Urahara’s products.

“So you think Urahara could have an answer to this?” asks Ichigo.

(1/?)
>>
>>42035567

You shrug. “Well, maybe. He knew a lot about souls when I met him, and he seemed really into science-y stuff. I bet he could come up with something. At the very least, he could take a look at your soul, too. I already told you that you had a lot of Reryoku for most Quincies, right? He could take a look at that, at least.

"Anyway,” you decide to change the subject, “you said that you and Tatsuki had been practicing without me? Mind if I join in? I could use the extra practice, seeing as I won’t be getting any more lessons next year.”

When Ichigo inevitably asks why, you proudly tell him that your Quincy training was going to start that year. In light of that Ichigo agreed to ask Tatsuki about giving you some impromptu lessons later. Ichigo was a little sad that you wouldn’t see him much for quite some time, but at least he seemed to understand, saying that as long as you taught him a few Quincy tricks afterwards he was okay with it.

That was when your sister barged back into the room, all but throwing an ice pack at you and Ichigo.

“Don’t stay out too late! Don’t wander too far! And be sure to keep your jackets on!” Ichigo’s mother- whom had insisted that you call her ‘auntie,’ now that you had known for a while- called out from the kitchen.

“We will!” You call back, slipping on your jacket and earmuffs. Ichigo had on a thicker jacket and a pair of thick gloves. After helping Usagi back into her own coat (she had trouble zipping things up) the three of you step outside the clinic, breathing in the cool winter air.

>89 vs. DC90 = Bare failure!

“Hey,” says Usagi, her voice muffled by the coat. “Was it that overcast earlier?” She points up.

“She’s right.” Says Ichigo. “It’s definitely a lot cloudier than it was a couple minutes ago...”

“Hey, hey!” You say, cutting in. “Are we really going to let a little bit of imperfect weather get in the way? I put this jacket on for a reason!”

You quickly lead the two a ways away. And of course… “Not it!” You shout, smirking. You dash off, leaving two shocked kids in your wake. Thankfully it seems like Ichigo’s just as slow on the uptake as he usually is, and Usagi manages to get out a ‘not it!’ before running off in the opposite direction.

Now, where to go…?

Well, Ichigo’s pretty smart, you think. And he probably knows all of the alleyways like the back of his hand, too. Hmmm… Maybe you should go in the direction your sister did? Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. And considering the fact that you managed to sneak by Ichigo while he was in his own room, you have no doubt that you could do it again, easy.

Glancing behind you, you see Ichigo panting, supporting himself on a wall. Good- he’s too busy catching a quick breather to notice you slip past.
Too easy.
***
“Usagi? Sis? You out here?” You call out towards the field around you. You can’t see anything around except for a few scattered trees…

“Nii-san?” calls out another voice from right above you. Wait, what? You look up. “U-uhm. You’re not gonna call me out, are you? I worked really hard for this spot…” Your sister shrinks back into her small spot amongst the pine branches. She looks at you worriedly, her entire form tensing.

You shake your hands in alarm. “No, no!” You say. “Of course not. I would never do that. That’s a horrible thing to do. But uh, do you mind telling me how you got up there in the first place?” You smile sweetly. “Please?”

“I climbed. Why?” Your sister tilts her head in confusion; her expression quickly morphs into that of alarm. “O-oh! Was I not supposed to do that? I’ll get down right away if-“

“No! It’s fine, it’s fine. You just.. climbed? That’s it?” Your sister nods. “Welp. I certainly can’t do-“

>71 vs. DC40= Success!

You cut yourself off as you suddenly feel something using your Reishi senses. “W-what was that?” You glance back at your sister. “You felt that too, right?” She nods, though she seems confused.

“Um, yes? I think so. But it feels almost like-“

(1/?)
>>
>>42037269
“Ichigo!” You say, finishing her sentence for her. You begin waving Usagi down from her perch. “You have to get down from there! That felt like Ichigo, but…” You hesitate. “He almost felt… panicked. And it was a really big wave of Reishi- He never puts that much out normally.”

After helping your sister wriggle down the tree trunk, you take hold of her, leading her towards the source.
***
What you find when you get there almost freezes you in place.

Lying in the street is Ichigo, seemingly fainted- he’s covered in multiple lacerations, his coat seemingly torn into ribbons, blood oozing from his wounds.

>71 vs DC60= Fair Success!

Standing only a few ways away from him is his mother, facing down a horde of wolf-like Hollows, a Reishi Bow fully formed at her fingertips. Gnashing their teeth, two of the Hollows dive towards her, and the entire street seems to freeze over in ice and snow. Much of the horde stands back, panting and blowing flakes of snow and ice all around, though around four lunge around the woman to face her unprotected back.

Thankfully, Ichigo’s mother is an experienced Quincy- sidestepping the first two lunges, she spins around gracefully, letting several arrows fly forward and striking the wolves in their masks. She quickly launches another flurry of arrows at the four behind her and into the larger pack, and you hear several cracks as they all hit home.

(2/3)
>>
>>42037311

Unfortunately, it seems that these Hollows are far more team-oriented than others; several of them, already wounded, dive in front of arrows meant for the healthy ones. The latter, snarling pounce towards the Quincy, scoring several slashes across her abdomen before she can take them out. In a blur of movement, Ichigo’s mother seemingly materializes close to you and Usagi. “Quickly,” she whispers, her voice hoarse and laced with pain “take Ichigo and run! Head back to the clinic. I’ll hold them off. Be sure to flare your Reishi all the while. Hopefully, there’s a Shinigami patrolling around the area. Now, go!”

Nodding hurriedly, you gather up Ichigo in your arms and run off…

You turn around, adrenaline rushing through your veins. You shout at Usagi to run for it, hefting Ichigo’s body onto your back. You try to run, but your movements feel far more sluggish than usual. If only you were a little stronger…!

Grunting in effort, you drag Ichigo’s body as you step, step, step forward. Hope begins to fill your heart as you feel your load begin to lighten, probably thanks to the adrenaline-

22 vs. DC 60= Great Failure!

-and your hopes quickly plummet back down to zero as a static-y BUZZ crowds inside your ears. It sounds almost like the angry buzz of a swarm of bees, except twice as malevolent and several times more deadly to anyone not allergic to bees.

What happens next is a blur. You don’t quite hear yourself call out to Usagi to “TAKE ICHIGO AND RUN” but you distinctly remember doing so. Similarly, you don’t quite feel one of the Hollows pouncing on your body, sinking its fangs into your flesh, and easily crushing your ribs as it slams you into the road. Rather, you just feel a sort of detached kind of not-feeling as you glance at the damage, your body still struggling to push the damn thing off of you.

Faintly, you hope that Usagi at least managed to find a phone booth or something. Maybe you should get around to having a cellphone on you at all times.

You can still feel the wolf Hollow tearing at you, ripping through your skin as it bites and slobbers at you trying to sink its teeth into your neck.

Your breathing feels ragged. “Khk! Gurgle…” No, scratch that, you’re not even sure you’re breathing anymore.

It can’t end like this, can it? Just mauled to death by a Hollow? Dying exactly like how a million of your ancestors must have died?

Your fists clench tight, drawing blood from your palms, even as you tilt your head one more time in an effort to keep the beast’s fangs away. No. It won’t end like this. You REFUSE to end it like this! You feel your hand close around something warm, familiar. You recognize it immediately: your Core Drill.

In spite of the fact that you’re almost certain you’re about to die, you have the audacity to smile, even in the face of a monster whose first instinct is to rip you into tiny pieces.

92+ SPIRAL POWER vs. DC 60: MASSIVE Success!

With a roar of strength you never knew you (and that you won’t have again for quite a while, you hope) you wrench your arm out of its place from the beast’s paw, sinking your Core Drill into the bone-white mask. With immense effort, you manage to force the drill deeper into the white mask as you Spin it clockwise.

“Listen here, you dumb dog,” you manage to hiss out despite the blood clogging your threat. “You want to know why I won? Because my soul-“ you roar out again, completing the drill’s revolution “-will PIERCE ITS WAY THROUGH ANYTHING IN ITS PATH!”

Pulses of green power travel their way through you, erupting forth in a display of fantastic destruction that lights up the street. For a single moment, the entire world seems to be suffused in green as the power pours out of you in a dome. You close your eyes, savoring the feeling.

When you open your eyes again, you find yourself still clutching your Core Drill, all of your wounds gone, and the Hollow attacking you nowhere to be seen. You turn around, seeing Ichigo’s mother look at you in shock and the pack of Hollows surrounding her staring at you warily.

Breathing in, you feel the energy spiraling around you- bare-bones remains of the incredible flux of destruction you had managed before, but it should be enough to make a weapon from. And of course, you know exactly what weapon to make, you think, smiling. Your Core Drill, responding to your wishes quickly begins drawing in power both from the environment around you and from deep within yourself. The energy coalesces into physical form.

When you finish, you’re holding a dark grey bow, seemingly made entirely from sturdy steel yet feeling as light as a feather. The two limbs taper off into gold-tipped drills, while the string is made of that green, ephemeral substance. Glancing at the Hollows, you smirk, and grip your bow.

Power gathers into your hand as you draw back the string, gathering into spiral-tipped arrows. Your fingers seem to blaze into green flames as you fire over and over and over into the horde of Hollows, striking at their masks. Unfortunately, your weapons doesn’t seem to have the same amount of power as Ichigo’s mother’s- while yours manage to crack the masks after a hit or two, her arrows were easily shattering off pieces.

Thankfully, you aren’t in this battle alone, and Ichigo’s mother gets a grip on herself and her bow. Blurring back into action (how does she do that?) a dozen arrows sprout within the masks of the hollows, shattering each of them into a thousand pieces. She shouts two words into the air which you easily understand:

“Fighting Retreat!”

You nock another drill arrow, letting it fly, and nod, dashing back with her. You take the offered hand and the world goes by in a blur as you desperately keep an eye on the Hollows and continue firing. Behind you, you feel more than see Ichigo’s mother somehow firing arrows one-handed, despite her accumulated wounds.

The Hollows themselves seem to be retreating in the face of this show of power...

>69 vs. DC25= MASSIVE Success!

…But you aren’t having ANY of that. These things hurt your best friend, tried to eat your aunt, and almost ate you! You’re not going to let any of these things escape, mark your words.

Narrowing your eyes, you glance at each and every one of the wolves firing an arrow at their masks whenever possible, and at their limbs when not. Your eyes widen when one of them suddenly explodes into a dazzling burst of light, singing most of the wolves close to it and sending them into a fearful frenzy. It seems like your Auntie really didn’t like how these things tried to eat her son.

You take the cue for what it is, and carefully aim your next arrow, pulling it as far back as you’re able. The energy solidifies into a long, spear-like drill, the metal a dark grey. You let it loose.

The drill easily pierces through all of the wounded wolves, and several more besides, though it leaves you feeling drained. Thankfully, the Hollows left were all weakened, and your Aunt picks them off one by one with her arrows. The two of you sigh in collective relief. All that’s left is to find your sister and Ichigo.
***
Thankfully, your sister was quite bright. Although she wasn’t able to carry Ichigo all the way back to the clinic, she did manage to carry him up the pine tree she had been climbing earlier.

Both you and Auntie were glad that they were safe and sound, and Usagi had practically burst into tears when she saw that you were alright.

“Hey, hey…” you murmur soothingly, “See? I’m fine now… I’m not gonna leave you any time soon.” You pat her on the back as she blubbers indecipherable words of relief into your neck. You have a feeling that you’re probably going to need a new shirt, but that’s okay. You’re okay. You’re not dead. You’re okay.

You’re… okay…
***
You wake up in a small cot. Briefly, you wonder where you are, only to realize that you were probably in the Kurosaki Clinic.

>>42039911

“Hoh! So our resident hero finally wakes up!” The booming voice only confirms your suspicions. You turn your head to the doorway, seeing Ichigo’s father in a white lab coat. You move to get up, but he pushes you back down in a flash. “Sorry. Can’t let you go walking around just yet. You were completely exhausted by that last scuffle. If I don’t at least give you a once-over, Ryuuken’ll have my head.” You wince in sympathy. You can understand that, you think. Your father was definitely protective, even if he didn’t show it often.

Still, you think you have the right to ask a question or two…

“Look,” says Ichigo’s father before you can even open your mouth, “I’m only going to answer one thing before I put you back to sleep. You need your rest, but I can understand that you want an answer or two. Alright? So, shoot. Oh, and you can call me Isshin, or even Uncle if you want. You saved my son- you'r entitled to that, at least.”

“Is Ichigo okay?” You ask instantly. You were pretty sure Auntie was fine- she was still fighting despite her wounds, and even when both of you were striking down those Hollows, she still managed to take down more than you. Or at least you think she did; you were too busy aiming to count.

Ichigo, though? He was hurt even before you arrived, and you had a good feeling he was the first person to be targeted. Not to mention the fact that he looked terrible.

“Ichigo? Well…” Isshin trails off, probably trying to put his observations into words more appropriate for a six-year-old. In the end he gives up, because he just sighs and says, “Well, Ichigo’s definitely going to have scars. And I’m not too sure they’ll just be physical scars either…” Your eyes widen at that. “Ichigo was mauled by a bunch of Hollows- frankly, he wasn’t ready for this kind of battle just yet. And to be honest, I’m surprised you were, considering the fact that you two are the same age.” Isshin looks at you.

You say nothing. After all, what are you supposed to say? That you’d seen battles just as terrible as this one in your dreams? What kind of six-year-old dreams about that? You hadn’t even told your parents about it. After another beat, Isshin shrugs and speaks again, “Anyway, Ichigo’s at the hospital right now. We’re lucky Masaki found him when she did- otherwise he might’ve bled out into the street. Never mind thefact that you came at just the right time to give her a helping hand.”

“…Is that all? About Ichigo, I mean?” You finally ask.

Isshin decides to smile just a little at your concern.

“…Yeah, thankfully. Ichigo’s a little broken, but physically, he’ll eventually get out alright.” Isshin tries to look at you encouragingly. “Look, whatever you’re thinking, this entire thing isn’t your fault. Hell, you might well be the one who managed to keep this entire thing from being a disaster. So don’t give me that look, okay?”

Isshin reaches into his pocket, pulling out a water bottle and a pill. “Here, a sleeping aid and some water. I’ll call up your folks and tell them that you’re going to stay here for the night. That sound good?”

You nod, and gratefully take the medicine and water, swallowing down both. You lean back into the cot, and you could already feel yourself growing drowsy. Before your eyes snap closed, you feel a familiar weight in your hands, and sending a prayer of thanks to whoever decided to give you such a gift, you drift off to sleep, the weight of the events today catching up with you.

End: IshidaQuest: Drill Four!

Well.

I suppose if Ichigo gets better we should start teaching him archery.

Just so he has a mind set on how to beat one when he gains his zanpaktou.

And hey, at least now he should be more cautious when it comes to ghosts. Maybe that will prevent the Grand Fisher incident. Then again, Masaki will still probably die due to Ywhach's bullshit. Our mom will, too. I hope we can do something with the Spiral to prevent that, for both of them.

That's, actually probably bad. It disrupts the delicate balance of Souls between our world and the Soul Society, and we have no clue what our stunt may have actually DONE to Usagis soul just yet. Could be we took her completely out of the cycle of reincarnation completely.
