You leave a lot of bodies behind as you disembark from the ship and make the hike to your hotel.

Apparently, every fighting team is given a suite in a luxurious hotel for the duration of the tournament. Or, at least as long as they survive. And, being the only building in a vast forest, the hotel sticks out like a sore thumb.

As you and your team enter, a nicely dressed man approaches, giving a respectful bow.

"Good evening, sirs and madams," he says politely. "Allow me to escort you to your room."

You're taken to an elevator and up to the top floor, then led down a hallway until you reach your room. The man informs you that complimentary coffee will be delivered shortly, and bids you a good evening before shutting the door.

The suite includes a common room, a bathroom, a small kitchen, and three two person bedrooms. The living room window offers a nice view of the surrounding wilderness, and a large couch gives plenty of room for you and the others to relax together.

Bruce plops himself down at once, quickly getting comfortable.

"Man, these rich people know how to live," he comments as he puts his hands behind his head. "I could get used to this."

"I wouldn't, if I were you," Aalgan tells him as he walks to the window. "Odds are that you'll be dead before this week is over."

"Oh, shut up!" Bruce shouts over his shoulder. "I'll do a lot better than you! Count on it!"

There is a knock on the door, and a man enters pushing a cart. He places five cups of coffee on the table, then politely takes his leave.

"They want to see us die in the ring," Kara tells you. "For now, it's just coffee."

"Sounds good," you tell her before looking around at the others. "Any objections?"

There are none.

"Awesome," you comment. "An entire room to myself. No way I'm going to get assassinated tonight or anything."

"Of course not," you hear from the doorway. "We want to save your death for the ring."

Looking at the speaker, you see that it's a rather short, bald-headed demon with two horns sprouting from either side of his head. He wears a brown jacket and matching pants, and, somewhat typical of demons, a smirk on his face. Other than the horns, he looks pretty human, except for his purple skin.

He steps into the room, followed by two of his teammates. One is a demon about Bruce's size, with a face closely resembling a crocodile. He has short black hair, gray skin, and wears black pants.

The other is a scrawny creature with a deranged look in his eye. He wears no shirt, and the shorts he's wearing have torn legs. He has clawed hands, and a short tail.

"My name is Tatchaburu," the short demon says by way of introduction. "My team will be facing off with yours tomorrow."

"Except yours," the crocodile man says. "You guys took the preliminary boat."

"So you guys didn't have to do the preliminaries?" you ask.

"Of course not," Tatchaburu tells you. "We aren't a "guest" team, we're directly sponsored by one of the crime lords organizing this tournament."

"And where are the other two members of your team?" you ask.

"Thy didn't feel like coming," he answers. "They didn't see a point in it."

"They should be careful about being so arrogant," Kara cautions.

Tatchaburu smiles. "I agree, they really shouldn't declare victory before even seeing their opponents. Still, they reached the right conclusion even without coming here, so I guess there's something to that."

"What did you say?" Bruce asks in irritation.

"He's saying you guys are weak!" the crocodile man clarifies, laughing to himself.

"I assure you, we are more than prepared to deal with the likes of you," Tatcheburu says calmly. "I look forward to tomorrow."

The trio turn and depart from the room, with the scrawny creature pausing and looking back at your team for a moment before leaving and shutting the door behind him.

"Man, the nerve of those guys!" Bruce says angrily. "Coming to our room and starting trouble. What's their problem?"

"They're trying to get under your skin," Aalgan tells Bruce. "And it looks like it's working."

"I can't wait to beat those smug bastards tomorrow," Kara announces.

"Alright, everyone, let's get ready for bed," you tell the others. "I vote for Aalgan to tell us all a bedtime story."

You get incredulous looks from your teammates, but Aalgan shrugs and takes a seat on the couch. Kara heads off to bed, warning everyone not to be up too late. Kasai and Bruce stick around, the latter sitting across from Aalgan as the demoness stands by the window.

"Alright, so this is the story about the time I almost got eaten by a swarm of Hatefish," Aalgan says, sounding somewhat bored.

"I was tracking some idiotic thief through the wilderness of demon world," he explains. "He left about as obvious a trail as anyone could, so tracking him was easy. Problem was, he was fast. Lucky for me, he's also stupid."

Aalgan takes a sip of his coffee. "I come across a pond in the middle of the woods, and the idiot's tangled in some vines hanging over it. He's squirming and screaming like an idiot, so I knew that every predator in the forest would come running if I didn't shut him up. I threw a dagger right into his skull, then went to get him from the vines. Problem was, the vines gave out, and he fell into the lake. So, I dove in after him."

"Why would you do that?" Bruce asks.

"Because I needed proof that I killed the guy, and my daggers are expensive," Aalgan answers before continuing. "So I dive in, and that's when I notice about a hundred fish swimming towards me. It was only when one took a bite of my arm that I realized what they were. A hundred Hatefish in the water are nothing to mess with, so I thought fast. I cut off one of the thief's ears and threw it to shore, then pushed the body away from me. The fish smelled the blood and went after his body, while I swam off."

He stands up ."Then I brought the ear back and got paid. The end."

With that, he heads for his room, leaving you with the others.

"Night Bruce, night Kasai," you say, heading for your own room.

Despite the fact that you'll be facing possible death tomorrow, you fall asleep rather quickly. Still, you have some nightmares that night involving Hatefish.

The next morning everyone is up bright and early for the tournament. You hike through the woods to the stadium, and step in to find that a massive crowd has assembled. Every last seat that you can see is filled with a wide assortment of demons, most of which are screaming for your bloody death.

"Get out of here. humans!" you hear from one.

"Human loving traitors!" one shouts as Kasai and Aalgan.

"Come on, John and Bruce! You can do it!"

"Yeah, make them cry!"

You turn to see who said that, and spot Kaya, Lucy, and your father sitting a few rows back, waving and cheering for you.

"Oh man, what are they doing here?" Bruce asks.

"Cheering," Kasai says, stating the obvious.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen!" a woman shouts from the ring. "Apparitions, demons, even humans, welcome to the Dark Tournament! My name is Koto, and it's my pleasure to be your host once again!"

You look to the ring and see a brown-haired woman with a fox tail and ears to match standing in the center, holding a microphone and grinning as she looks around to the crowd.

"Today, for our opening match, we have Team Luke facing off against Team Tatcheburu!" Koto announces.

You spot Tatcheburu and his team enter the arena, ignoring the crowd and putting their focus on you. You see that all five members are present this time, with one of them being an older looking demon with short white hair and pale skin. The other is tall and powerful looking, with two heads and one horn on each.

"Team captains, please enter the ring!" Koto requests. "The two of you will set the terms for this match. If no agreement can be reached, then we'll simply go by best of five one on one fights."

You step into the ring, and meet Tatcheburu in the center.

"Best of five sounds good, but how about a chairs and ladders match for the Captains?" you suggest.

"A..what? No." Tatcheburu replies.

"Well then, basic best of five it is!" Koto announces.

You step out of the ring, and see Tatcheburu talking to his team. The crocodile man looks over, and hops into the ring, casually strolling towards the center.

"This one's mine," Bruce announces, leaping in before anyone can protest.

The two fighters meet in the center of the ring, and Koto addresses the crowd.

"From team Luke, we have Bruce, and on team Tatcheburu, we have Wanisob!" she tells the crowd. "No weapons have been banned, and no extra terms have been put in place. This is an old-fashioned, bloody, best of five battle that's sure to be filled with plenty of delicious pain!"

"Yes, you'll feel plenty of pain, human," Wanisob tells Bruce.

"Nah, but I'll be happy to make you feel it," Bruce replies, a faint glow beginning to surround his body.

"Let the match begin!" Koto calls.

Bruce throws the first punch, his fist slamming into the long face of his opponent. Wanisob's head turns briefly, but he quickly recovers, just in time to get an uppercut that makes him step back.

Another punch makes Wanisob stagger back further, and Bruce stops his attacks.

"Come on, at least put up a fight!" he insists.

Wanisob smirks, looking at your friend. "If you insist."

"Aalgan, what's going on?" you ask. "What kind of training did you put him through?"

Aalgan keeps watching the fight. "Your friend lacks the proper control over his Spirit Energy necessary for the kinds of techniques that you've learned. His Spiritual Awareness falls more to an instinctive level, and his energy has developed a sort of awareness of him. When he fights, it protects his body, and adds itself to his attacks. Against a more powerful opponent, that wouldn't help him nearly as much as it is now, but it seems the one he's fighting is not as strong as him."

"Bruce, it's usually a bad idea to let your opponent punch you in the gut," you tell your friend. "No matter how weak he is. Finish him in case he wants to surprise you with more powerful techniques."

"Fine," Bruce says, throwing a strong uppercut that catches Wanisob in the jaw, knocking him flat on his back.

The crocodile creature picks himself back up, but immediately takes another punch that sends him staggering back, then another that throws him off balance. But, as Bruce throws another punch, the creature opens its jaws wide, and closes them on your friend's fist.

Bruce yells in a mixture of pain and surprise, struggling to free his hand. He kicks Wanisob in the gut, and the monster lets go, sliding back near the edge of the ring.

"Agh, what just happened?" Bruce asks.

"You may be too strong for my punches, but my bites are another matter," Wanisob answers. "My jaws are as strong as they get, more than enough to break through your defenses."

Bruce looks down at his hand. "Well, that hurt, but you'll have to do better than that if you want to stop me."

Wanisob smiles. "Oh, it gets better. You see, I also possess a rather potent venom, which even as we speak is coursing through your body."

Bruce looks back down at his hand, and tries to lift it, the struggle showing on his face as his entire arm refused to budge.

"You see?" Wanisob asks. "Soon, the entire left side of your body will fail, and the rest will follow shortly."

"Folks, for those of you that couldn't hear about this recent development, let me fill you in," Koto tells the crowd. "Wanisob's poisoned Bruce, and robbed him of the use of his left arm!"

"Bruce, end this now!" you warn your friend.

"Right!" he says, rushing towards Wanisob.

The demonic crocodile rushes to meet your friend's charge, getting a hard punch to the face for his efforts, but not getting knocked out of the ring.

Bruce kicks him with enough force to throw him off of his feet, and Wanisob crashes on his back hard. Bruce runs to attack again, but suddenly falls over as his left leg gives out.

Wanisob laughs, pushing himself back up and walking over to your immobilized friend.

"You see? I told you it was only a matter of ti-"

The demon is cut off as your friend uses his free hand to launch himself off the ground, kicking the creature in the face with his working leg. Wanisob falls back down and slides out of the ring, landing head-first in the grass as Bruce collapses to the ground.

"Well, Wanisob's out of the ring, but Bruce is down!" Koto calls. "I'll start the count for both of them! One! Two!"

You watch Bruce struggle to push himself back up, cursing in frustration as he collapses back to the ground, his right arm giving out.

"Three! Four!"

Wanisob, meanwhile, steps back into the ring, rubbing his head as he stares at your immobilized friend.

"Five! Six!"

The demon walks over to your friend, staring down at him with murder in his eyes.

"Seven!"

"Stop counting!" Wanisob demands as he lifts Bruce by his collar. "He's not down anymore."

Bruce groans from the effects of the poison, staring into the demon's face in anger, and fear.

"So, you want me to hit harder, do you?" Wanisob asks, pulling back his fist. "Then I'll hit harder!"

You hear Bruce grunt as the demon punches him in the face, then again as he does it a second time. You and your team watch helplessly as Wanisob mercilessly beats your defenseless friend.

"Hey, call the match!" you shout to Koto, who briefly turns her attention to you.

"Sorry, but I can't do that unless your friend surrenders, or is down for ten seconds," Koto explains.

"Or dies," Wanisob adds, punching your friend again.

"Right...or dies," Koto confirms before addressing the crowd. "Well, you were promised brutality, and here it is! Wanisob is mercilessly beating Bruce, a fighter who can't even defend himself! All the human can do is take each painful strike and wait to see whether unconsciousness or death will end it!"

The demons in the crowd cheer wildly, while Lucy cries out, horrified, begging for Bruce to get out of the ring somehow.

"That's it, make that human suffer!" you hear someone in the audience demand.

"Show that weakling why his kind don't belong here!" another adds.

Wanisob laughs, and briefly stops his beating as he looks at Bruce. "You hear that? They've learned what I've known all along. You're weak."

You hear Bruce make an angered sound before grunting in pain again as Wanisob knees him in the gut. The demon tosses your friend, sending him sliding close to the edge of the ring.

"Not five minutes in this tournament, and you're already helpless on the ground, moments from death," Wanisob mocks as he moves towards your friend.

Seriously why is his spirit energy defense not working anymore? That doesn't make sense.

You feel something different in Bruce's energy, and notice the glow around him beginning to return.

"Now, die!" Wanisob shouts, opening his jaws wide and moving to end your friend's life with another powerful bite.

With an enraged cry, Bruce moves, his hand shooting up and wrapping around Wanisob's throat.

The demon gasps as your friend lifts him into the air, and struggles to breath with Bruce's hand around his throat.

Bruce's glow has become much brighter, and turned to a shade of red. His body trembles with rage, and you can feel his Spirit Energy has gone through the roof.

At your side, Aalgan chuckles. "It's over."

"I don't know how, but the tables have turned!" Koto tells the crowd. "Bruce now has Wanisob by the throat, and doesn't seem to be planning on letting go!"

Wanisob struggles to free himself from Bruce's grip, but your friend holds on tight.

"I'm weak?" Bruce asks angrily. "This coming from the coward who had to poison me to even have a chance at winning."

Wanisob kicks Bruce in the face, but all this does is make Bruce even more pissed off.

"Bad idea."

He drops the demon, then delivers a kick that shatters its leg. The beast howls and falls to the ground, crying out again as Bruce throws another kick that sends him rolling out of the ring.

"I'd stay down if I were you," Bruce tells Wanisob, watching the demon closely until time runs out.

"And ten!" Koto calls. "The winner of the first round is Bruce!"

The crowd erupts into boos as your friend steps out of the ring, his glow fading.

"That was badass," you tell Bruce as he approaches your group.

The two of you shake hands while flexing your muscles, and Bruce grins.

"Yeah, I was pretty great," he agrees.

"I'm surprised you didn't kill him," Aalgan comments, looking across the ring at the badly wounded demon.

"Trust me, I wanted to," Bruce admits. "But this works just as well."

"I think I get it; your Spirit Energy is influenced by your emotions, so when you got angry, you got a lot stronger, and were even able to beat the venom," Kara says.

"That's pretty much it," Bruce tells her.

"He's lucky he was fighting a sadistic idiot," Aalgan comments. "Had he just let Bruce stay down, Wanisob would have won the match. But his insistence on dragging things out and mocking Bruce cost him the match."

"Team Luke, Team Tatcheburu, you both need to produce your next fighter!" Koto calls.

"Aalgan, I want to see what you can do, buddy," you tell the man in sunglasses. "Make us proud."

Aalgan smirks, stepping into the ring and calmly approaching the middle. In response, the opposing team sends in the large, two-headed creature.

"Hmm...two heads, and I have two daggers. How convenient," Aalgan comments as he looks up at the towering creature.

"We'll rip you apart," the two heads say together.

"Fight!" Koto instructs.

Aalgan immediately backflips to the edge of the ring, putting some distance between himself and his opponent.

The opposing demon glares at him, not pleased by his hasty retreat.

"Running already, coward?" it demands as it slowly lumbers across the ring, moving towards your teammate.

"No, just getting some range," Aalgan answers, drawing one of his dagger.

He tosses it, and catches the blade between to fingers, watching as the hulking creature slowly gets closer. He throws it with expert precision at the head to his right, but the creature moves with surprising speed, blocking it with his hand. The dagger stabs right through his palm, but the creature appears unharmed.

"Aalgan has drawn first blood!" Koto comments. "But Gondel seems to be shrugging it off like a bee sting!"

Gondel removes the dagger from his hand, and tosses it out of the ring. He licks the blood off of his palm, smiling at Aalgan.

"Was that supposed to hurt?"

"No, it was supposed to kill you," Aalgan tells him, drawing his other dagger.

You think you can see something on the weapon, but don't have much time to examine it before Aalgan breaks into a charge, leaping at the creature and stabbing downward.

Laughing, Gondel claps his hands together as Aalgan descends. Your teammate cries out in surprise as he's suddenly thrown back, slamming onto his back and sliding halfway across the ring.

>Continued

Cursing, he picks himself back up and throws his remaining dagger, this time aiming for the creature's chest. Gondel laughs, once more using his hand to block the dagger, and once more having it pierced.

"You don't learn," the two heads comment as Gondel removes the dagger, tossing it out of the ring to join its twin.

Aalgan doesn't say anything, holding his ground as Gondel approaches. When the beast gets close, Aalgan rushes forward, diving between his legs and rolling under him. He jumps, spinning and slamming his elbow into the creature's back before adding a kick.

Gondel spins, backhanding Aalgan with enough force to send him to the other side of the ring, once more landing painfully and being subjected to the large creature's laughter. Still, your teammate picks himself back up.

"You should really stay down," Gondel tells him.

"Thanks for the advice," Aalgan replies before charging again.

This time, when he leaps, he throws a kick at the head to his left. Gondel catches him by the leg and slams him into the arena floor. Gondel lifts him back up, and Aalgan throws a punch that catches Gondel in one of his faces.

Roaring in anger, Gondel slams Aalgan into the floor again. And again. And again, until the smaller demon goes completely still. Satisfied, Gondel tosses him from the ring, and Aalgan rolls through the grass, stopping at your feet.

Koto makes the count, and Gondel is declared the winner. But, as he exits the ring, Gondel suddenly goes still, twitching, and then collapsing. His teammates rush to him, and you soon hear them say that Gondel is dead.

"Unbelievable!" Koto declares. "Gondel has won the match, but has dropped dead just after leaving the ring! This is the second time in the history of this tournament that the victor of a match has been dead!"
