The snow continues to pile on while you give the inspector's question some thought. You could run forty leagues by yourself easily, even in the snow, the wind, and the cold, since your people were made for that. But as you shift around to get a better look at the other passengers (those not dead or dying) streaming slowly out of the snowhole you dug, you feel a stab of pain coming from your ankle. You sigh. The perspective of herding plainsdwellers instead of goats isn't a happy one.

"People with me. We go to station, we say problem here. Okay?"

The train captain ponders your words a long time, stroking his bushy beard all the while. You resist clicking your tongue at him for having to think about the obvious.

"Yes, it makes sense. Though I'm afraid in this weather we might take more than the handful of hours it should... You!" he says, talking to one of his staff, "check in the supplies we will be able to take for... Let's say four people. And you, girl, what's your name?"

"Tsering," you reply.

"Well, Tsering, you shall be our guide then."

Guide? Tsk.

"No, I say what we do, you know nothing. I know mountain, you not," you say, your voice betraying your irritation.

The captain looks peeved at that.

"Girl, this is exactly why I said you'd be our guide. And, I... ah," he starts before throwing his hands in the air, "well, it doesn't matter. Just watch your tone."

You relax a bit.

"Good," you say. "Just listen and we okay, okay?"

"I want to come," says another person. Ha, the young man who looks like a barely weaned boy.

"No," you say automatically.

"Look, you don't want to give me the time of the day? Fine," he says in a strained voice. His hands goes above the bloody bandage around his ear to rearrange his hair. "But I heard claps before the avalanche started. It wasn't natural. That one was deliberate. And the region has been unsafe lately, with the Shishin rebellion. And to be honest, out of all the passengers in train, I'm the one who can hold myself in a fight if it comes down to that."

The captain coughs in his hand at this.

Lalen looks up at him and scowls.

"I said 'passengers'."

The captain nods with a sly smile.

"Only if listen very good and not talk so much."

"As you say," he replies with a shrug.

"Then on we go," says the captain, "we'll fetch our supplies, and some weapons. Boy, do you know how to hold a rifle?"

"Thank you, but there is no need, I...have, well, this," he says, before producing a slingshot.

The captain looks nonplussed, and you let escape a snicker, bringing about a venomous look from Lalen. What can you do?

"And I suppose you don't need one either, Tsering?"

"Hah no know how use."

"I'll wager."

*

They don't talk to you, or about you, but they're talking all the same. You try to follow the conversation, but you only pick up bits and pieces. The captain is called Vind, Lalen wants to become a soldier or something like this, and the captain is apparently dodging questions about the nature of this train full of aspirant trainees of the Society of Fellows. They talk so much. If only you didn't have this sprain, you'd be making them run so hard they wouldn't have breath to talk.

"—saying, it's peculiar to think of a train full of nothing but—"

"Lalen, shhhh."

"Miss Tsering, I'm not—"

You shush him again and bring your hoodie down. Cupping your ears with your hands, you listen again to the faint noises you heard. There. People. You wave the captain and the boy over while still trying to pinpoint the source. They look at each other before trudging towards you. Snowshoes. Vexing you have to wear them as well.

"People," you say, pointing roughly forward. The wind muddles things, but definitely in your way. "Do what?"

"How do you ev—," starts Lalen, but the captain interrupts him.

"Well, you're the leader," he says with a crooked smile, "what do you think we shall do?"

"No good. We go, nh," you start, frown, then resort to miming what you mean.

"Circling around, then. That's sensible, given what the boy told us."

"I said already, I'm twenty!" interjects Lalen, his voice rising.

You shush him again, and start to lead them away. But there are more groups of people you hear on your sides, and weaving around them is starting to get difficult. The wind so far is an ally, carrying their sounds to you, and yours away. But you can feel it changing.

"Big group in way. Wind also not good for...cir-cle?", you say. Both of them nod at you. "Also noise like train but not same, okay? Brrm-brrm," you continue, hoping they understand.

The captain scratches the back of his head. His beard is starting to freeze, even if he looks fine. You can't say the same of Lalen and you. You're not shivering yet, but this has been more taxing than you thought it would be. Your breath catches sometimes, and the pain in your ribs is starting to get hard to ignore.

"This sounds like a war party. With vehicles, if you are not mistaken. This ordeal might be more critical than I first thought. How is your ankle holding up? We might have to go much faster if we want to overtake them."

"Run okay, if necessity," you reply.

"You...pick up odd words. And I'm afraid it is a necessity, indeed. Not only for the sake of the passengers, but if we are surrounded by three different armed groups headed for the town from which we want help, we need it in one piece if we were to save our own people."

You keep your thoughts to yourself.

His movements seem to pick up some sharpness, and after stretching his neck once or twice and discarding his snowshoes, he declares himself ready to go. Lalen and you look at each other from beneath your hoods, and both of you tighten the straps of your backpacks after fastening to it your own footwear.

You start slowly, but quickly pick up speed. To your surprise, even with their running technique in disarray, they both seem to be able to sustain the pace. The captain and you jostle for the first place, with Jalen behind but keeping up with you. It won't take long to reach town, even if you have to go around the scattered army. And your ankle is holding up more easily than it

Then the captain falters, whirling around. Before he hits the ground, you hear the claps. From your right. They were hidden behind a rocky formation. Lalen is already sprinting towards them, backpack discarded. The three of them are in white clothes, and reloading their weapons.

If the captain can still fight, he will regardless of what we do. If he can't, attending to him will only give the ambushers more time to kill us. The best thing we can do now is secure the area, and check on the captain once we're not in danger of getting shot.

If they're already reloading they only have one shot of whatever they're wielding, so just watch their movements and be ready to drop if they take aim I guess?

Can't really get super duper tactical if you're already do a blind charge with close combat weapons against a group of ranged opponents so just pray they don't hit.

How good are we a knife-throwing? Is the sharp stuff throwable as well?

Otherwise, all we can do is close the distance to the shooters. Snowshoes off, straight-line dash until they're reloaded, then maintain cover. Once within melee, they can't use their guns, so we'll have the advantage.

You sprint to the side of the rock opposite Lalen, keeping an eye on the third armed man. The two others are already focused on your associate. When you realize you're not going to make it before he finishes reloading, you grab your knife and throw it at him, forcing him to the ground to dodge it, then your satchel. Then you're on him, and strike with your staff. He parries easily before he forces you to do the same by using his rifle like a club. Unfortunately for you, your staff breaks and it's only by the skin of your teeth you avoid the hit to your head.

You can't let him gain range, which is obviously what he tries to do. You'll have to fight in close combat. Your pull out your icepick from your belt and circle around him. You're faster than him even with your gear, and more nimble. A lucky slip of his foot lets you find his leg, and you're sure you're never going to forget the grinding feeling of your pick against his bone. His cry is muffled by his heavy scarf, and his hands close in around your weapon. You kick him, dislodging the pick axe and throwing him to the ground where he lays cursing, trying to stem the flow of blood.

Lalen seems to have dealt with one of his opponent, laying motionless into the snow, one of his leg folded almost to his back, unconscious or dead. But the other one seems to be giving him more trouble, and your martial artist companion has his hand to his bandage.

Oh captain, my captain.

You don't have the leisure to check and see if your writhing opponent has another gun on him, but you don't want him dying at your hand. If the snow drinks all his blood, it will be only the justice of the land, and your conscience will be light. You pick up his rifle and rise it above your head. He puts one bloody hand up.

"Wait," he creaks.

"<I'm truly sorry>," you reply.

It takes three times to stop him moving, and only the blood bubbling out of his wrecked nose indicates any life left in him.

You pray Lalen finishes off his last opponent, and head to the captain's side after grabbing the satchel you threw. He's kneeling in the snow, breathing heavily. He's alive at least.

"Good. You okay? Walk okay?" you ask, already pulling the few medicinal supplies you have left out of your knapsack.

"I think... Seems like the bullet will be a bitch and will stay in my shoulder for the time being. Ha, forgive me my language," he replies. Not like you understand what is he talking about exactly. "You'd better check on our young friend."

"No need," Lalen says from behind.

His eyes seem just a bit glazed. The blood spot on the bandage wrapping the side of his head definitely widened.

"Yes. You? Okay?"

"Good. Need ask thing. Who they are. More where. Yes?"

Both of them nod. The captain rises. "Then I'll conduct the interrogation. Hopefully the pain will make them talk the truth. Which one is in the best condition?"

"Probably Tsering's, at first glance," replies Lalen.

"Well, show me then. Miss Tsering," he says, looking at you, "it would be best you'd stay here. What is going to unfold is best not witnessed by a young girl like you."

You click your tongue at him. "I fight, I see."

He shrugs.

But you have to look away when he starts breaking the man's fingers, muffling his cries with his hand until they die out. His victim's answers are unintelligible to you, his voice deformed by pain and your own earlier work. It seems to you that the moment is stretching on an on, but you're still sweaty from the fight by the time the captain seems satisfied and lets the man curl up around his mangled hands, one arm hanging limply at his side.

"You're not a train captain at all, are you Mr. Vind?" says Lalen, his question more a statement than a real inquiry.

The captain only smiles his crooked grin, which looks far more sinister to you now. He catches you staring, and he nods apologetically, his hand going to his heart.

"With that said, it seems there are four groups in the army making a play for Nallet, the station city we are ourselves headed to. One we already knew about," he says waving his hand forward, "another coming from the mountains we don't have to concern ourselves with, and two we left behind, and who are circling around for some kind of pincer strategy. They're aiming for a night raid, if I understood our friend here."

He looks above.

"It's roughly mid-day, which means we'll have no trouble informing whoever's in charge, especially if they don't move for their current location. But we might be in for a rough night."
