You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the new wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Upon arriving at the Grey Watchtower, you met with the king of Belmore, King Feliks Larinov I, and were told what you need to do to earn Belmore's support. To prove your capability, you must journey into the swamp, the buffer between Belmore and Eligos' domain, and light two beacons on the ruins of the old wall which protected Belmore from the Lord of Fear's advances, then make it back safely to the Grey Watchtower. You have one week to prepare, light the beacons, and make it back to the watchtower. It will take roughly two days to make it to the beacons and two days to make it back, giving you up to three days to gather supplies and allies. Today marks the first day of your one week, you'll need to start preparations for your journey now.

Breakfast at the Grey Watchtower proves to be a much more somber affair then at the Red or White Watchtowers. The food, while not necessarily awful, is very bland and the other crusaders pay minimal attention to you and your companions compared to the constant over-the-shoulder glances you received at the Red Watchtower. The men in black armor, the Blackguards as Captain Aleksander called them, are restricted to one specific area of the dining hall, and are served nothing but gruel and water. You almost feel sorry for them, but Aleksander said they were all criminals, so you can't say they didn't bring this on themselves. Besides, it's not like they would be treated any better in jail than they are here.

“So we've got a week to light those beacons and get back, right? When do we head out?” Erika asks.

“They said it's a two day trip to make it to the beacons, so we have three days at most to prepare.” Justine summarizes. “The question is, what do we do in that time?”

You tap a finger on the table, considering your options. If you use all three days to prepare, you'll have to hope nothing slows you down in the swamp. That said, heading out there immediately without making any preparations would be a bad idea as well. You'll have to decide how you want to spend the time you've got wisely.

First thing's first, you need to purchase supplies for your journey into the swamp. Besides rations and other basic equipment, you might want to consider buying some supplies to deal with monsters if you run into them.

The town you arrive in feels somewhat quieter than you'd think it should be. Maybe you're just used to the hustle and bustle of Morsland, but if you didn't know better you'd almost think this town was empty. Despite the lack of loud chatter though, there are many people on the streets and many stores to visit. There is a priest standing outside the town's church, reciting litanies from the tale of creation. Ganelon informs you that the church may have supplies for sale that could help you deal with monsters should you encounter them, as dealing with monsters is also one of the clergy's duties here in Belmore.

The others head out to make their own purchases. Where should you go?

You head inside the church and grab one of the priests' attention. You ask him about supplies for fighting monsters, and he leads you to one of the side rooms in the church.

"That cloth armor you're wearing, it's from the White Watchtower, is it not? I assume you've come to Belmore with the Champion then?"

"You could say that." You respond, deciding not to tell him you actually are the Champion.

"I see. Then you'll be heading into the swamp soon, won't you? I wish you luck, the swamp is a dangerous place, particularly at night."

He unlocks the door to the side room, revealing a supply room filled with multiple chests containing various odds and ends.

"Just show me what you want and I'll tell you it's price. You're with the Champion, so we'll give you whatever you need at cost."

You recognize the author of that book as the same one who wrote the two compendiums you've read about angels and demons. However, Justine and Nerillian seem fairly knowledgeable about monsters, so you'll save your gold for now and rely on them if you need information.

After buying garlic and silver amulets for your honor guard and escorts, you part ways with the priest and return to the town square. The others should be finishing up soon, you could probably check one last store though if you're quick.

You decide to stop by an apothecary too before you go. A grey haired dwarf stands behind the counter, cleaning out a vial until he notices your entrance.

"Huh, ain't seen you around town before. Who're you?" He asks.

"My name is Siegfried, I'm actually not from this town. I was passing through and thought I'd stop to see your wares."

"Siegfried? That's an Iserian name, innit? Pretty sure that symbol on your tunic's from one of the Watchtowers too, not ours though. You with that Champion everyone's been talkin' bout then?"

"Sort of. We're here to stock up before heading to the swamp."

The owner strokes his beard. "Swamp, eh? You poor fool. Better have a look at what I've got then, you're gonna need everything you can get."

You just buy a potion of cure disease for now. After putting it in your backpack, you venture back to the town square and meet up with the others that came with you.

"Everyone got what they need?" You ask, and everyone nods. "Ganelon, did you get the rations like I asked?"

"Indeed I did." Ganelon says.

"Alright, then let's head back to the tower. We still have a lot to do before we head out for the swamp."

--------
Later that day, you decided to do some research about the swamp in the watchtower's library. It's not nearly as big as the Red Watchtower's library, but you find what you need easily enough.

As Ganelon said, the swamp is the source of the cold that plagues most of Belmore. Both demons and monsters make their home there, but they aren't necessarily allies. In fact, it sounds like they're openly hostile towards one another. The swamp's water is very shallow in most parts, although certain residents do burrow holes in the muddy swamp ground in hopes of others falling in where they can be drowned and devoured. It is known that there is a human farm just a few miles east of the ruins where you are to go and light the beacon, but nothing is known about what's inside, although there have been attempts to raid it by certain zealous religious orders at times, with varying degrees of success. Many local superstitions exist about the swamp, some more credible than others. So feared is the swamp that one of the worst curses in Belmorian culture is "Swamp take you" or some variation thereof.

>>42078161
You look for a map of the swamp as well, hoping the library might have one. Unfortunately, it seems there are none here, or if there are then you can't find them. Fortunately, the beacons are tall enough to see from far away, so at least you can use them as a point of reference.

Deciding you've done enough research for the day, you return the book you were reading and head for the courtyard, where most of your group is busy practicing. Erika is sparring with Roland, while Justine practices with one of the unfortunate locals, unaware of what he's getting into. Reinhardt is practicing against one of the dummies with a surprising amount of zeal, and Nerillian is practicing on the archery targets. Ganelon is meditating by the wall, and Celia is practicing against one of the dummies while Geoffrey observes and offers advice. You notice the dummy Celia is practicing on looks pretty badly damaged, though it doesn't look like she's doing it on purpose.

You head over to where Celia is practicing, thinking you'll ask to spar with her. Geoffrey said she was kind of sour about her lost at the tournament, maybe a fair one-on-one match will help smooth things over.

"Does that dummy owe you money or something?" You joke, the poor practice dummy now practically falling apart.

Geoffrey smiles. "No, but I feel we may owe the Knight-Captain some to replace it now."

"I see. Well, since this dummy's broken, how about practicing with this one instead?" You ask, pointing to yourself.

Geoffrey laughs. Celia, however, doesn't seem as amused as her brother. "I won't hold back." She warns you, not necessarily in an aggressive way but in a very serious, almost business like tone. Seems she takes practice very seriously.

"Didn't really expect you to." You say with a shrug.

There is a weapons rack nearby. You could use one of the tower's practice weapons, or you could use Galadriel if you prefer.

"You mind if I use Galadriel then? I usually practice using her, plus I've noticed normal weapons sometimes break when I use them now."

Celia thinks for a moment. "I do not mind, so long as her blade is dulled."

"Alright, thanks."

You shift Galadriel into a halberd, and get into a stance. Celia does the same, face calm and eyes focused on you and Galadriel.

You throw a few probing attacks at her, testing her defenses. She blocks all of them with her shield, offering no free openings. That failed, you try jabbing at her sword arm. You land a decent blow on her wrist, causing her to wince but her grip doesn't quite let go of her sword.

Trying to follow up, you attempt to thrust beneath her shield. Unfortunately, her reflexes are too quick, and she moves to the side to avoid your blow. Left open by your thrust, you are unable to move fast enough to avoid her counterattack, getting hit in the side of the head by the pommel of her sword.

You try hooking her by the belt with your halberd, but she manages to swat it away with her shield and get back on her feet. Failing that, you start pushing the offensive, changing weapons with each swing. She blocks a swing from your sword, but is caught off guard when you pull back and swing a warhammer at her, knocking her shield aside. Changing to a spear, you sweep her feet out once more, then change to an axe and swing down at her, stopping an inch from her face.

"Alright, I think it's safe to say this one's my win. Unless you want to fight to knockout like back at the tournament."

Celia looks up at the axe hovering just above her face. She seems kind of confused, like she's having trouble processing that she lost. You move your axe away from her and offer your hand to help her up. She ignores it, getting to her feet by herself and dusting herself off.

"I'm going to retire early tonight. I'll be in my room if anyone needs me."

With that she walks off, leaving you to wonder if you somehow did something wrong. Geoffrey approaches, a small smile on his face and clapping his hands.

"Not just once, but twice you've beaten my sister. Granted, it wasn't until knockout like at the tournament, but impressive nonetheless."

"It looks like she's still mad at me though." You say with a frustrated sigh.

"I wouldn't say that. It's more like she's just confused."

"What do you mean?"

"You have to understand Siegfried, Celia has gone her whole life without losing a fight to anyone besides myself and our mother. Defeat is almost a foreign concept to her, she just needs time to figure out how to handle it. Until then, I'm afraid she'll be a bit of a sore loser. You have my apologies for that."

You shake your head. "Nothing you need to apologize for. She's on my honor guard now though, I'm really nervous having someone who's angry at me on the team."

Geoffrey sighs. "I understand, your concern is justified. I assure you though, she may be a bit sour, but she isn't any less loyal, I give you my word on that. Regardless, I'll have a word with her regarding her behavior. Again, I apologize on her behalf."

You shake your head. "Don't worry about it. Anyways, it's getting late. I think I might just head to sleep early too. Do me a favor and remind the others to get some sleep too, we're heading for Ganelon's church tomorrow morning."

>Celia does realize we have the same angel enhanced strength right?
She's aware, yeah.
>I'm surprised she is so surprised that Sieg is giving her a hard time.
Well while you are as strong as she is, she's still had a lot more formal training than you. The surprise is partly because she's simply not used to losing period, and partly because she didn't expect the guard who happened to pick up a magic sword to be able to go toe-to-toe with her, the one who received years and years of formal training and was born with incredible strength.

Eh, not necessarily Berry Quest. I'll be putting it to a vote again, but Berry Quest will definitely be an option. Actually, that could be fun to write.

>>42081074
I'll still stand by my statement many threads ago that this quest will probably not go over 200 threads, if even that many. Or maybe it will, depending on how shitty my pacing is. I'll be legitimately surprised if it really does go over 200 threads.

Man all she wants is to kill Lilith and Malaphas. And keep her child/subordinate Aleria safe.

Did we just miss out the elemental magic book while buying supplies?

Also training with Levi when?
>>
>>42082566
Levi doesn't seem to be the fighting type,so I guess we'll only train with her about other things such as mind-control-resistance

Let's use some time to "educate" Cellia by having her loose to Erika I a spar.

She needs to grow up and get rid of that stubborn childish pride of hers.

Also make sure she befriends Erica so we have someone to reign them in besides us.
>>
>>42083635
That's kiiinda dickish anon, the lesson isn't going to stick if Erika wins unfairly. And her belief that she's unbeatable in a fight doesn't quite count as childish pride if her entire life experience supports it. Give her time and she'll learn otherwise.

Pretty much,we can't exactly force someone to chill out so to speak.

>Aleksander moves a sheet on the table towards you once you agree to the trial, what appears to be a map of the swamp with the beacons and Grey Watchtower's locations marked. "Your seven days starts tomorrow morning. You can bring your honor guard, escort, and whatever other allies you can scrounge together in time, but no one from the Grey Watchtower can help you. This map is the only help you'll be getting from us.

>>42078181
>You look for a map of the swamp as well, hoping the library might have one. Unfortunately, it seems there are none here, or if there are then you can't find them. Fortunately, the beacons are tall enough to see from far away, so at least you can use them as a point of reference.

I thought we already had a map! I assume it wasn't a detailed map, if we are looking for another.
>>
>>42087290
I assume that any map of the area has the approximate location of the beacons surrounded by blank space labeled 'bad shit here'.
>>
>>42087429
Then I say we choke the anon who suggested looking for a map. Since we have one we can sketch a rough projected path and rally points on for if we get separated.

>fuck off, we're full - the map
>>
>>42087290
I forgot about that. Whoops. Sorry about that anon, thanks for catching that.

As for what the map Aleksander gave you has on it, it's a map drawn by scouts sent into the swamp on patrol (mostly Blackguards). It's not 100% accurate, but it has the location of the beacons and the Grey Watchtower marked, along with a few notes like "Burrow Fiends here, Giant tribe hunting grounds, mortal farm" and a few other notable things. It's hand drawn though, so while in the library you were looking for a more accurate map. That's what I'm going to say to cover my fuck-up at least.
