You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. After traveling coast to coast on the ultimate road trip with your friends to establish yourself as a landmaster, you have reached New York. You’re not just here to buy cheesy souvenirs and get sweet photo ops though.

Over the past couple weeks you've started having a lot of questions about your father, and as it turns out, your dead dad might have an old storage unit in town. Getting your claws on his old junk might be the only shot you have at getting answers.

--

“No reason to be shy,” you mutter to your friends. “I’ve got a right to be here.” Kind of.

“Lead the way,” Ro says.

You step around a pool of rainwater and walk up to the storage place’s security office. You lean over and knock on the window with a knuckle. It’s crisscrossed with that wire mesh reinforcement stuff, whatever it’s called.

The guy inside folds his paper and rolls his chair over to open the window just a bit so he can hear you talk. He’s not really happy to be here right now, and the fatigue worn under his eyes and the fact he smells of strong coffee say he had a long night.

You take a calming breath, and try to trust your gut. You need to get in here, preferably without doing anything illegal. You hate cameras. With a touch of focus, trying to wing it based on your impressions of the security guy’s demeanor, you start talking without knowing exactly what you’re saying until you’re saying it.

“I’m so sorry for bothering you, but I’m kind of in over my head,” you say, faking a pained expression and pulling your hood down, even though you’ve been trying to keep your hair dry. You note his nametag – Kennith.

Kenny the guard takes in your miserable, rain-soaked clothes and your sad face. He sighs and removes his faux-police cap and sets it on the counter in front of him. “Do you have a storage unit here?” he asks in a weary voice. It’s the kind of weariness employees at places get when they’re about to have to explain why they can’t help.

“My dad had – he has one here. I mean, I... I think this is it,” you say, your voice strained to breaking, and crocodile tears blurring your vision. Wow. You’re pretty good at this.

Rowan steps to your side and puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder, going along with the show. “He passed away a couple months ago,” she says, keeping her voice low as if to keep you from noticing.

He keeps a flat, purposefully disinterested expression. “Are you an owner of the storage unit?” Ken asks again, a little more pointedly this time.

You seriously doubt it. If there even is a storage unit here, your dad got it before you ever existed. “Could you please... just check if one belongs to him?” you ask, wiping your eyes on your sleeve and sniffing loudly.

He wants to say no. It’s probably against company policy for him to tell you information about clients. Fortunately for you, you look pathetic and cold, and way sad, all things you can tell are pulling at your mark to make him feel bad for you. Plus you’re way hot. That factors in. “I can check,” says Kenny, ostensibly remaining professional, though uncomfortable within. You feel anxiety from him, likely about going outside his job description.

Quickly before he reconsiders, you go on. “His name’s David Beckhoff,” you say, spelling it out for him.

“O, F, F,” he repeats, jotting it down on a piece of paper. You feel recognition with the name, and a tinge of worry.
>>
>>42135699

He’s heard it before, definitely. “Hold on a second while I look that up,” he says. Which is strange, because if he knows the name, he’d know whether or not there was a unit. Unless he’s just going through the motions for show?

He wheels over to a computer, does a little typing. He reads the paper and looks back at the screen to confirm, and returns a moment later. “There’s a unit under D. Beckhoff,” he tells you curtly, “but that name is the only one listed with access. I can’t let anyone in except for the owner.”

Damn. He’s not going to roll over for you. “But he’s my dad,” you ask, your voice trembling. You’re on the verge of fake tears once more.

“I’m limited with what I can do, ma’am,” Kenny replies, trying for damage control. “Without permission from the owner...”

“He said I was supposed to take care of everything,” you say, your eyes pleading.

You feel him cracking. Now is the time for blunt instruments.

“I have to do this today – the flight back is tomorrow, but he said I needed to...” you purposefully choke on your words, as if they hurt to say aloud. And then you bury your face in the crook of your arm and cry.

Your coughing breaths make your quarry incredibly uncomfortable. “Ma’am, please don’t,” he says evenly. You are really, really good at this.

“Well,” Ro says, “is there a manager or someone we can talk to?”

“I’m all for today,” the guy answers lowly, feeling the weight of impending doom. “They’re not available on weekends. But you can –“

“I should’ve checked,” you say, pretending to attempt to stymie your tears. “Dammit. I knew it.”
>>
>>42135717

Rowan puts on an air of exasperation. “I told you this would happen. You’re so dumb about stuff like this,” she says, turning in place and storming off in a huff.

You cry harder. Ro’s the best.

Kenny groans internally, and his resistance gives way. “Okay okay,” he says reluctantly, holding his hands up, maybe hoping to stop you with the gesture. “I’m not really supposed to, but I can let you in this once.” He reaches under the desk and pulls out a key with a big tagged #25 on it, which he slides to you. “Try and make it quick.”

You snatch up the key before he can change his mind. “Thank you so much,” you say breathlessly.

The guard shakes his head to himself and flips a switch. The front gate of the complex rattles aside, allowing you and your friends entry. You all head in.

Once you’re out of sight, you put your hood back up and rub your eyes with a pair of fingers, a little bit disgusted with yourself.

“You really put on the waterworks,” says Rowan. “I’m impressed. I haven’t seen you cry since... a long time ago. Unless... you’re not really upset about any of this, right?”

>Unnatural Charm: Sierra may supernaturally identify with those around her, picking up on emotions and thought-vibes, and instinctively act and speak in such a way that will impress them and help her in accomplishing her own ends. The effect works best on those who don't know Sierra very well, or those that are unfamiliar with magic, since Sierra isn't acting like herself when utilizing her Belphegoran people-reading skills. “Kind of surprised myself there, actually,” you say, chuckling at the memory of Kennith’s discomfort at your tears. “Instincts kicked in or something. I liked the bit you did though, kind of like the friend who didn’t really want to come along but had to come along because of guilt.”

“I was channeling some people I actually knew once,” she says, smiling.

“People on the soccer team, maybe?” you ask, grinning back.

“Well,” Ro says, without patience or desire to discuss the topic further. “But it’s cool you’re getting your Belphegoran powers on the ropes.”

You scowl. “How do you know I wasn’t just good at faking it?”

“Because you literally just said your instincts kicked in,” says Ro. “Plus you’re not that subtle. Like, you’re subtle, but you’re not manipulative. Some people are two-faced with everyone around them.”

Yeah, she’s definitely talking about Beatrice and the soccer gang now. Since you don’t want to talk about them, you bring the key out of your pocket and give it a hard look. They key itself doesn’t look too old. Maybe they changed the locks or something? Other than that it’s just a regular key. No crazy magic you can see.

“Twenty-five is this way,” Moriah says, pointing down the row of storage garages to the very end.
>>
>>42136379

You follow her directions, which land you in front of the far corner shed, water raining off the corner into a medium sized lake, which Reeber finds incredibly interesting.

The slat door is rusted at the bottom, a pair of nondescript black numbers stenciled onto the front. It doesn’t look especially large. Not big enough to park the SUV in. But it’s the number, and you’ve got the key, so hey.

You stand in front of the door, key in hand, ready to go. Just... got to open the lock at the bottom and reel it up. See what’s inside. Maybe it’s just empty or whatever, who knows. Nobody’s been in here probably since your dad... you know. Dropped by. And now you’re dropping by. (+2 Stress: 28)

“This is it?” asks Vikrama, eyeing the door with suspicion. “It doesn’t look sixty years old.”

“Perhaps Sierra’s father moved his things to this new facility when they constructed it,” says Xan. “This seems as good a place as any to store one’s secrets.”

Mori speaks quietly from just behind you. “I would be excited,” she says, just loud enough for you to pick out over the rain.

You’re not sure if you’re excited or not, though. But everybody else’s excitement and curiosity is kind of getting on your nerves. (+3 Stress: 31)

Also let's SoTM into the thing to make sure he didn't go and rig a firebomb to the door. Dude was a Verwelken. It's not like he needed to actually open the place to get in. He could just walk through the walls.

You try to laugh off your nerves. “Wow Xan, way to be foreboding and stuff,” you say.

“I aim to please,” she replies, bowing mockingly.

Moriah goes up to the door and presses her hands to it, then her ear, attempting to discern anything useful. “I don’t sense anything untoward. But...” she leaves the thought hanging.

“It might not be safe,” Ro says.

“My dad was powerful enough to hide his tracks if that’s what he wanted,” you say. “Plus he was Verwelken. So it’s not like he actually needed to use the door ever, so yeah, I don’t think he’d want it to be safe that way. I’d put a landmine on it at least.”

“I wouldn’t chance it,” Rowan says. “Even if you walked in like he might, through the walls, you might still trigger some defense mechanism.”

“Unless whatever magic’s here thinks Sierra is David,” Vikrama suggests. “Ossifera thought she was her dad. Maybe his spells just check for his blood?”

“Blood which runs through your veins,” Xan says, smiling sharply at you. “Perhaps he even wrought the spells for your benefit.”

You think this over. “I’d rather not stumble over some tripwire and get a face full of claymore,” you decide. “This looks like a job for astral projection.”

Moriah nods, beginning to set herself up to do just that.

“No, I meant me,” you say.

“You can astral project?” she asks, arching her eyebrow in doubt.

“I don’t know,” you say. “I figured out how to have an out of body experience once when I couldn’t sleep. I’ll do that.”

“I’ll come with you,” says Moriah, putting her back to the wall and sitting down Avatar style.

You join her, and both of you close your eyes.

“I’m learning that next,” Vikrama tells Rowan.

She smiles, humored by her enthusiasm. “You do that.”

You let your focus slip from your mind. Not that you’re not focusing, you’re just focusing outside your skull, on a certain point right in front of you.
>>
>>42137264

While you still feel you, the familiar light-headed feeling comes to you, and a blurry impression of things comes into your thoughts. (-2 PP: 44/46)
“Are they gone?” asks Vik. Strangely, you hear her from two places at once – from where you are, but also from the center of your focus. It’s like stereo Vikrama. But you can’t let her distract you, you’ve got things to do.

You shift your focus back from yourself until you’ve got an impression of the storage locker and your friends in front of it. And then you focus on the space at your back, behind you. You focus until things get dark.

Your mind’s eye drifts in darkness, darkness which gradually fades into shapes and textures. The storage locker has a few random things in it. There’s a metal trunk, a couple crates, and a folded blanket, as well as a group of thin wood chairs and a collection of luggage.
You don’t spot any obvious traps, but there are a two suspicious mirrors hanging high on the walls, opposite each other. They’re tiny, maybe a half-foot in diameter, with dimple iron frames. The glossy surfaces look oily smooth in the shadows. Closer inspection reveals just the tiniest vibration of power within them. You don’t know if they’re supposed to feel that weak or if time has corroded the enchantments. But with no way to tell how they’re activated, you pull back out, back to yourself.

It’s once again a dull grey afternoon, hazy with rain. You stand up, dusting chips of pavement off your butt.
>>
>>42137294

Moriah remains seated for a moment more. She gasps suddenly, eyes flinging open wide with her inhale. She takes a second to calm herself, and stands up with you. “You saw the mirrors?” she asks.

“Creepy,” you say.

“They have shades in them,” Moriah tells you.

“They say anything?”

“They wouldn’t talk to me,” she says, “but they’re sealed inside. I don’t know what they’re there for. If they’ve been there all these years....”

You don’t know much about shades, but Moriah takes them pretty seriously. You probably should too.

>Okay, so instead of a claymore, David rigged these shades to rip out and eat people up if they opened the door.
>Maybe they’re just security observers. Like, they’re there to alert him if stuff goes down.
>Nothing in there was exciting enough to set shade guards up for. I mean, unless he’s got all his Nazi gold stashed in one of the crates.
>Might be safest if I go in alone. Xan’s right, they might think I’m me for my blood.

“Okay, how’s about I pop back in there and talk up the shadows,” you say. “They'll know who I am and how to get the probably rabid shades.” Or at least you hope they know who you are and how you can avoid getting mauled by rabid shades.

“If it’s safer that way,” Ro says. She frowns. “Are you sure you can trust these shadows?”

You snort and lean back against the wall. “You can’t trust any shadows,” you say, projecting your mind’s eye back into the storage locker.

“Be careful,” Moriah warns you.”

Careful didn’t get you this far. “Sure,” you tell her, focusing on the darkness around your consciousness.

Remote listening is strange, since you’re not really doing it with your ears. The chorus of murmuring voices is a white noise just underneath your thoughts.

You focus on the sounds of the voices, trying to isolate one or two to listen to. The murmurs raise to whispers, some quiet, others hissing. You begin focusing on the calmer of the voices, those that exude a welcoming presence.

The hissing surges suddenly into an overpowering wail. A cacophonous avalanche of voices sear your mind, cutting painfully across your thoughts. You make out only bits and pieces from the flood.

“A̵̷̢͞A̡A̵̵͘͢͝A͘͜͜͟͠A̵̵̧͘A̴͞H̨͘͜H̀H̸̢̛̀!” one wails.

“G̶eh̨͡t̵̶ ̸̧̢̕e͜͟͟͞s I͏̸́hn̵͏͘͝ȩ͜ń̀͝ ̨͘͝͠g̴̕ư͡t,̶͡͝͞ ̵̢͝͞Da̶̢v̸̸̕i̸͢͡ḑ̀͘͝?” another asks conversationally, only to splutter on at an impossible rate, like a recording on fast forward, or someone trying to catch a close friend up on years of news within a five second span.

You brace yourself against the wall to keep your footing.

And then one voice thunders over all, silencing all else. “D̴̨a̵̛̕͏mnę̸͜͞͏ḑ̀̕͠ ͜a̧re them͠ that̶ ̕sp͡eak, d͏̕͝a̡̛͢m͠ń̶̨̧͢e͝͡d̵̸̛͝͞ are̕ t͜he͠m̸ ̡th͟a͜t͢ b̵̀̀́͢r̵͏̸͞ȩ̶͡a͏̷͏k̀͠ ̷̕͘͝t̷́h͏̷͠e̵̢͢ ̶́w̵͘͏͢ò̷r̷͞d̀͝.̸̷̡̛͝”̶̵͜͟

Every voice and murmur present shuts up, leaving a deafening quiet, like somebody hit a switch. And then everything goes dark, leaving you numb. (-4 Sanity: 87/100)
>>
>>42140351

Your hands are cold. Shakily, you shove them in your pockets. A wall of pavement gets in the way, though. The hell?

Somebody’s talking to you. It’s Ro’s voice? “Sierra? Please, just tell me what’s happening,” she says.

You realize your eyes are open and that you can see stuff, namely Rowan crouching over you, with Reeber sticking his nose in your face. Somehow you’ve gone from leaning on the wall to lying on the ground. You flinch in surprise, shoving Reeber’s snout out of your face. Quickly, you get your feet under you and stand back up, your breaths quick and haggard. “I’m good,” you say, too fast. “All’s good here.”

“That’s good,” Vikrama says blandly, worry and seriousness thick in her aura, “because it looked like you just had a seizure to me.”

Xan watches you in silence, her entire body tense, her eyes alert for any possible trouble.

“She’s okay now,” Rowan says, hands out in a calming gesture. She looks back at you, still a little worried. “Right?”

“Y-yeah,” you say, putting a hand on your chest, surprised at how fast your heart’s running off.

“The shadows didn’t tell you what you wanted to hear,” Moriah says flatly, not quite managing to look at you.

You laugh nervously, feeling a little light headed. “It’s okay. Plan B time. Always... always got to have a plan B,” you say. You hold out a hand and summon Monster at the tip of your claws. The imp emerges from the bubble of flame and smoke, already knowing what his job is.
>>
>>42140366

With a bat of his actual, functional wings, Monster hops off your hand, flies in a long curve around the side of the storage unit, and zips in right between the corners at the edge.

Vikrama gasps. “Oh my god.”

And then Monster flies out from the other corner and lands right back on your arm. “Area clear,” he growls in his gravelly voice.

You nod and dismiss him. The imp explodes into a cascade of sparks, which promptly vanish.

“I can’t believe you just used Monster as bait,” says Vik.

Despite feeling kind of dizzy, you manage to laugh at her. “It’s just like me sticking in my hand,” you say, “except if I could regrow my hand if it got cut off or whatever.”

Vikrama sticks out her tongue. “Ew.”

“So it’s safe,” says Rowan, eyeing the door with more suspicion.

“No,” says Xan, still watching you with her prying eyes, “nothing happened with her summon, so it is safe for Sierra. There may be a trap yet to be sprung.”

“All right, screw it, I’m going in,” you say, walking over to the corner.

“What? You can’t just go in there alone,” says Vikrama, making as if to stop you.

Xan laughs derisively at her.

“Hey, come get me if you hear incoherent screaming,” you say, giving her a reassuring slap on the shoulder.

Rowan gives you a nod. “Be careful.”

“Yeah sure,” you say, slipping into the dark. (-2 PP: 42/46)

Within the storage cell is dank as it dark, though the darkness legit doesn’t bother you. You kind of wish you could get it this dark in your room midday. Not that you don’t like your room at the house, it’s just a really bright house.

The air is cool and stagnant. Quiet pervades. The shadows too keep their thoughts to themselves in silence. Maybe David did something to make sure they wouldn’t talk? You wonder what else he’s got in here if he didn’t want to risk a Verwelken coming in and figuring out his secrets.

You look at the two mirrors on the walls, wary. You feel you’re being watched by something within them. Unseen eyes keep you pinned in place, like a fly on flypaper. With a cautious step forward, you duck the path directly between the two mirrors and move down between the two stacks of junk on either side of the shed.

There’s... seriously not too much here. You were expecting something more intense. Like, piles of gold or a Panzer or something. Maybe the couple cardboard boxes stacked on top the metal locker hold some kind of secret?

You head over, a paranoid prickle tingling the back of your spine. You unstack the boxes and pop them open. A couple seconds with the shadows gets the metal trunk open too. It’s not magically sealed or anything weird. Which again, is kind of strange coming from the guy who bullied a dragon off the west coast, scared Hassatur away from the mainland, and married your mom.

You check the two boxes. They’ve got a coupe leather bound books in them.
>>
I caught up! Blessed lawn breaks!

Should we, at some point, mention how talking to shadows can eat our sanity? Seems like Moriah and Xan see how Sierra's mind is a bit more unhinged now.
>>
>>42140989

Flipping through, you find the pages made of plastic, with little card inserts. You can’t see any more details, though you assume they’re pictures. Loads of pictures. They feel flimsy and smell old. Okay. That’s good. These are good.

The trunk though, you throw the lid back. Within, you find a blanket and a scarf, carefully hand knit and soft. They also feel old, though they have a kind of distant flowery trace scent to them. The kind of flowers you’d find in the forest with dew on them. You should know, you’ve spent enough time outdoors to qualify as an expert in this kind of junk.

You pull it out to see what’s underneath, but something square wrapped inside the blanket falls out. You snap down and grab it with your shadow before it hits the ground. Turning it around in your claws, you find yourself looking at a glass smooth surface. It’s a picture frame.

You reach into your pocket at get your phone out for some light. Bringing the glowing face up to the frame, the light hits, showing you a black and white photograph.

It’s a pretty simple picture, smaller than you expected. It’s set in a paper oval opening, showing a smiling woman with light hair seated on a chair, gripping a petulant little boy by the hand. The kid’s something like seven or eight, and he’s dressed in an uncomfortable little outfit kind of like a sailor’s. He’s wearing high socks, shiny little shoes, and a long sleeved jacket with buttons. He’s sickly thin, paler than the woman by a couple shades.
>>
>>42141003

There’s something to him that’s familiar, though. Something you recognize in the eyes. And the face too. Kind of looks a little like... you. Which isn’t surprising. But the photo is surprising. It’s... really old. A lot older than you thought a photo like this would be.

You look at the woman again, and realize she’s wearing an afghan kind of shawl thing over her shoulders. Looking at the aging knit blanket under your other arm, you figure by the pattern and texture, it’s the same one. Or at least one nearly the same.

“How are you doing in there?” you hear Rowan yell from outside.

>It’s dark.
>Keep your shirt on, everything’s fine.
>How are you doing out there?
>Feels like I'm missing something. Haven’t found the gold yet.

“Not dead yet,” you call back. “How are you doing out there?”

“It’s raining, so there’s your answer,” Ro says, sounding relieved at your joking. You joking means you didn’t fall in a pit or something, you guess.

“Have you found anything yet?” asks Moriah.

You stand up straight and look around. “I uh... found some photos,” you say. “Haven’t found the gold yet.”

“There might not be any gold,” Moriah tells you. “If your father was smart he sold it decades ago.”

Damn. You didn’t think about that. “I’ll keep looking,” you say. And you get to it.

Of course you check the trunk for secret compartments. There’s always secret compartments. But in this case there are no secret compartments. The exception that proves the rule, you guess.

You keep looking around. The crates are full of tattered folders and binders filled with papers. Stuff like receipts, deeds, or newspapers or whatever. Just... regular stuff. Stuff you’d expect to find in anybody’s storage unit, if you’re honest. Except the quilt. There’s a folded quilt with a million colors and fabrics on it, just folded and stuffed at the bottom of one of the crates. The blanket’s big as you, and really soft. But it’s not made out of gold, so you put it to the side with the albums and go check the suitcases at the back.

The luggage is a few decades out of style, and it’s all hard leather kind of stuff. Doesn’t even have wheels on it. And they’re all empty. Go figure. The chairs are kind of nice though, if a little rickety and uncomfortable looking. Still. It’s classy uncomfortable. Antique.
>>
>>42141380

Behind the dusty chairs, there’s a tall frame thing leaning against the wall, covered with a sheet. You tug at it, then lift it free with your shadow and bunch the sheet up and toss it to the side.

It’s a tall, thin mirror, with a simple metal frame, kind of like the other two mirrors at the front of the unit. You shove the chairs to the side so you can get to it.

You feel a weird vibe from this mirror, and you detect something not quite right about your reflection. You know, besides your hair. Seriously you look kind of crazy. Although your DPYN sweatshirt does validate itself even under extreme lighting conditions, so that’s a thing. But there’s a weird intangibility to what you’re seeing. Almost like a delay.

You bring up your hand and snap without warning. Mirror you does the same thing, lagging just a fraction of a second behind.

Yeah, that’s not right.

You switch off your cell phone and stare into the mirror’s surface. Except there is no surface. Between the metal frame of the mirror, there’s a plunging space, like you’re looking out a window or into the depths of a mine shaft. What might have been a mirror once is a little bit more than a mirror now.

>>
>>42141903
There's probably not more than a few million on earth anon.

Not to mention taking over halth is no easy process and to do it we would need every available scrap of power. Which would make us want those wells even more.

If there's at least 500 wells in california, there should be at least 601 575 wells on earth. There could probably be a million wells in total.
>>
>>42141961
No. She doesn't, hence why we asked her for help.
>>
>>42141992
If we esitmated 1000 wells on the west coast. Probably 5000 in USA. 10000 in NA. Bout the same for SA and Africa. EU would be like 6-7000. Asia bout 15-17000. Australia bout 7000. Antarctica about 15000.

So about 75000 on land. Land makes about 30% of Earth. So probably no more than 250-300K wells on Earth.

Assuming even distribution. If it's based upon life in the area Antarctica could have like 6 wells total.

she asked us to betray / kill dad in return for he landwell. We didnt ask for her help guy, just a landwell.

If there’s anything this reminds you of, it’s the mirror that took you to the goblin warren in Fimbria, the spirit plane. Or was it the mirror plane? Or are they the same thing?

That one worked just by jumping in. But that one didn’t have the weird delay with the reflection. And you had a scheduled meeting with the people on the other side of that mirror, even if you technically weren’t invited and you stabbed them in the back. No negotiating with terrorists. Or... goblin thieves, you guess.

But no, this is no goblin warren mirror. This is some mirror portal to.... somewhere. Somewhere that belonged to your dad.

You head back to the front for a moment. “Guys, found a mirror portal,” you say. “Y’know. Like a mirror, but it’s also a portal.”

“Bring it outside!” Vik says.

“You can’t move it, depending on the portal type,” Moriah says. “It might change where it takes you.”

“Yeah, well I think this one only works in the dark,” you say. “Smart lock or something.”

“Well, I’ll send Monster in to scout, and if it’s cool, I’ll check it out too,” you say.

“Wait, come out here for a second,” says Rowan.

You comply. (-2 PP: 40/46)

Rowan reaches into her backpack and hands you a bundle of rope.

You heft the neatly tied rope in your hands. It’s a good thirty feet, at least. “How long have you been lugging this around?” you ask.

“Just try not to get lost,” says Rowan, avoiding your question.

“I’ll give it my best shot,” you reply. You head back inside, now equipped with your spelunking line. (-2 PP: 38/36)

You tie the rope around the big metal trunk, now empty. No way that thing’s fitting through the mirror’s sleight dimensions, so it makes as good an anchor as any. You drag it over to the mirror and sit down, preparing for your first round of magic portal safety checks.

“Check one,” you say, summoning Monster.

“I hate you,” says your imp. He puffs harmless fire into your face and flies down into the darkness.

A moment later, a small, angry voice echoes back out, far off. “I don’t see any gold.”

You snort, and try the mirror with your shadow. Besides the weird oily sensation of putting your shadow through solid glass, things seem more or less like the last time you did this dance. Still swishing your tendrils around in the mirror, you try it out with your finger. Nothing bad there, though it still feels weird and gives you shivers.

“C’mon, coward,” Monster beckons.

“Shut up,” you growl back.

“Talking to me is talking to yourself,” Monster says.

“That’s why I’m telling you to shut up,” you say. “It’s ditto for you too, stupid.”

“This is just like that scene in the Grinch,” replies Monster, “you know, with Jim Carry.”

You make a point not to crack a smile, and with deliberate action, unsummon Monster.

You take the rope, wrap it around an arm and secure it with your shadow, and squeeze through the mirror. The liquid feeling of retreating glass brushes against your face and through your hair for a brief moment, and then you’re through.

You’re glad you brought the rope, because this is getting kind of weird.

You’re in an expanse of blackness, save a hard surface underfoot, with no features. You start walking forward, searching for any signs of anything. But as you walk further from your point of entry, the blackness lifts, and you find yourself in a weird kind of forest. At your back is a crushing black mist. Before you, though, is a dry wood with bristly trees without leaves.

The ground is gravelly sandstone, porous and rigid underfoot. And then there’s a kind of deck set up with some furniture on it. It’s built from wood. Or... something like wood. It looks like the same material the trees are made out of. Curiously, you pause to touch one of the bristly tree branches sticking out from the angular plants.
>>
>>42142074

Instead of bending at your touch, it snaps off, like it was made of Styrofoam or sandstone. Like it wasn’t really a tree at all, but just an impression of one.

You toss away the broken branch, which though light weight, shatters on the ground. Mildly disturbed, you keep walking toward the built deck. Your rope goes taunt about exactly when you reach the steps up. Figuring you can find your way back easy enough, you tie the rope to the bottommost step and jump up onto the deck itself.

If you had to describe what you find, you’d say it looks a little like an office or maybe a dressing room. You know. If said office or dressing room just got ransacked.

There’s a desk strewn with faded papers, envelopes, and maps, some on the floor. An ornate inkwell lies on its side, black staining the tabletop wood and the papers from where it spilled. Pens, a compass and rulers lie scattered on the ground, along with broken glass. What drawers haven’t been ripped out hang precariously far out, their contents completely messed up.

The filing cabinets next to the desk are toppled over, papers strewn all over like guts from a deer that just got hit by a semi. Even the fancy leather lounge chair is fallen onto its side, the foot rest not far from it.

Stepping nearer, you find an antique lamp nearby, and set it back on its feet. It takes a second longer to find the shade for it, but once you do, you put that on it as well and switch it on. The briefest scents of gas and flame hit you when it alights, bathing the confusion in a gentle warm glow.

You turn to look at the rest of the private sanctuary. There’s a closet wardrobe and a few fancy studded chests, as well as a set of shelves that hold random books and objects. Among the things on the shelves you spot a map of the US and a couple framed pictures with a plaque.

You have a weird feeling in your gut looking at all this junk. (+5 Stress: 36)

First thing’s first. You right the chair and sit down in it.

Like. There’s other stuff you could probably do. Like take pictures of maps or see if there’s some secret letter written to you in the event you found this place. But you kind of just want to sit in the chic leather lounge chair. It’s pretty comfy. You sink into it a little, kicking over the footrest so you can prop your feet up on it.

You can see it. Your dad coming in after a bunch of stress, kicking it back at his hand-assembled landmaster cartography set, maybe taking a shot of scotch or something fancy. He’d be right here, doing his thing. Just right here.

You drum your fingers on the armrest, suddenly feeling kind of jittery. You push out of the chair and rifle through the scattered papers. Notes and diagrams. You recognize some arcane symbols and glyphs, but others you don’t know at all. You spot some Heltic and some German, with a smattering of hieroglyphics like Egyptian, all written in lengthy, spidery script. Dad’s handwriting.

You check over the maps. They’re detailed cartographic surveys, too detailed and close up for you to make any sense of them. Frenzied notes and marks mar each page, words crossed out with red arrows penciled in pointing this way and that in currents – ley lines, maybe. But most of everything doesn’t have the location named or specified.

You try to straighten things up as you go, sorting papers into separate piles on the desk. Eventually you clear up the top of the desk, and then you go to the side and continue there, stepping forward to get ot the main heap of the pile. You brush aside papers, readying to gather them up, when something glass crunches underfoot. You stop instantly and pull back, crouching down to look at the thing.

Delicately, you reach down and pluck up a shattered frame, bringing it up to the light.
>>
>>42142741

Picture’s simple – two little girls with matching missing teeth, stupid big smiles on their faces. You brush aside the broken glass. You’re the one on the right. Funny thing about this picture though, you’ve got a cut lip from where you got the tooth out yourselves. But then dad found you before you could back your sister up and did it for her. You helped though, so, that counts still.

You scowl and look behind you. Nobody’s anywhere. You’re literally a world away from anybody who knows you, you guess. No reason to take chances though. You reach in and sneak out the photo, slipping it on the desk alongside the papers and discarding the frame. You’ll get some kind of binder or something to wedge all these things in so you don’t bend any of them.

You keep going through your dad’s stuff. The desk is mostly full of drafting tools like pencils and stuff, calculators and slide rules and who knows what. Okay, desk done. You turn your attention to the nearby shelf and head over. You go straight for the map of America. Maybe he had all his wells marked? You unfold the paper, finding it much larger than you anticipated. And... there’s no landwells marked. It’s old though. Old enough that Hawaii and Alaska are listed as territories rather than states. You put it aside and go in for the books.

You grab the first book you see. It’s tall and heavily bound with worn out leather, cracked and falling apart. Nothing more than fancy patterns are on the front cover. Curiously, you leaf through it, but you quit that immediately, because a bunch of photographs almost fall out from where they’ve been tucked between the pages.

More cautiously, you hold the book horizontally so nothing falls out, and you look at some pages. Words words and more words, all in German, you guess. Endless handwriting. Dates.
>>
>>42142747

This one’s ‘Mittwoch, der 22. August 1928.’ You flip through at random, finding cutouts from newspapers, a rare photograph badly faded, or more frequently, rough hatched drawings of plants or animals or... things. Weird things. Like eyes or formless clots of blackness. Things with long limbs peeking out from the trees.

You check a couple other of the books. More German. More cutouts and photos and drawings. They’re journals. All of them. You find ones dated just a couple decades ago and others back in the 40’s.

Everything you wanted to know about your dad is right here. And maybe some stuff you’d rather not know.

With a shaking hand, you set the books back where he left them. “Holy sweet mercy,” you breathe, grabbing your wrist to keep it from trembling. But if both your hands are shaking, grabbing one with the other doesn’t help very much.

Your eye catches one of the huge studded chests, and you scramble over to throw it open. The lock’s already broken, and you pray it’s not empty, but it’s definitely not. You find piles of passports and random stacks of foreign currency inside, the dates on the bills putting them back to the seventies or sixties. And then there’s a mess of bigger metal coins, some bearing Heltic lettering and murderous creatures.

You move on to the wardrobe, swinging the doors open. Inside, you find an empty polished wood stand shaped kind of like a torso, and a dozen empty hooks. But there are a couple hooks that aren’t empty. There’s a glassy black orb about the size of a baseball sits covered in dust on a padded holder, and a thin metal spear that ends in a spike, carved in runes.
>>
>>42142754

And then there’s a wicked cool sword with like, kind of this curve to it, and a blood red gem clear in the hilt that you can see through. You can practically taste the magic on them.

But you can’t content yourself with any of this stuff, since there’s more stuff you need to check out. You head over to the other big chest. This one’s identical to the first, complete with broken lock. You prop open this one, and you’re hit with the smell of stuff that’s really, really old. As in untouched for years and years and years.

The first thing in the chest is a hat. But... not just any hat. It’s a military style hat. One with silver cords and a silver skull on it, as well as an eagle clutching a swastika.

Underneath the hat, you see parts of a uniform, and the edges of a leather coat. You also see portions of some kind of rifle buried amongst the clothes, along with belts and holsters.

>Cool. (Don hat)
>Wouldn't hurt to see how the coat would look, at least.
>Best to put this stuff back where your dad left it.

Sounds like someone was popular with the guys in the SS.

Welp, that's an SS officer hat. Guess that settles the debate on how Nazi he was.

>Send Monster back through to relay shit to friends as we look.
I'm pretty sure Mori speaks German, so she can probably help with a lot of this stuff later. Might wanna ask (through Monster) what's up with the creepy not-trees. We in Verwelkia right now or what?
>>
Carrying all this stuff out while avoiding water damage is gonna be a pain. I hope someone knows some sort of anti-water spell stuff
>>

We could just leave it all inside and take the mirror. If it's true that the only limit on the portal is that it only works in the dark.
>>
Did German officers have the Kar98k rifle as their standard issue? Only instances I have witnessed have been in popular culture and almost always sniper variant.
>>
>>42142824
Moriah just said you can't move mirror portals and have them work right.
>>
>>42142834
She also said it depends on the portal type. We don't know until she inspects it herself.
>>
>>42142834
And Sierra said that this one is probably limited depending on light. Basically, we should test it.
>>
Can we not go putting on any potentially magic hats without checking them out?

Also check the pockets of the coat, might be something cool.

I think Sierra would've noticed if it was magical, it's just an old hat.

We should sell it to Freddy. He gets to defend his pure Etheria against Eclipse untermensch.

What makes you think the dark lock replaces the location requirement instead of being something additional tacked on? Why would he keep this storage shed across the country, with unfriendly territory between it and his home area, if it wasn't location dependent?

>What makes you think the dark lock replaces the location requirement instead of being something additional tacked on?
What makes you think it doesn't?

>Why would he keep this storage shed across the country, with unfriendly territory between it and his home area, if it wasn't location dependent?
You're just assuming all of that. It could just be a good hiding spot.
>>
>>42142910
Because he hasn't had a need for it for years now?

Isaac let him slip out during the WW2 and later bolted him in the head. You know it's true.

>>
>>42142996
After he killed Isaac's dad.
>>
>Isaac's face when he sees Sierra wearing the SS hat
>>
>>42143039
Shit, that would've been kinda fucked. David kills Isaac's dad, then Isaac kills David and somehow ends up adopting his daughter.
>>
>>42143060
>I did not fight Nazi Demons for this.png

Though seriously, considering how he feels about his own crimes, I don't think just wearing a hat will mean much.
>>
>>42143071
It would make perfect sense in a story about revenge and redemption or whatever.
>>
>>42143071
Keep in mind we know a Velk did it.
>>
>>42143071
I imagine David was suffering from extreme paranoia and hellborn induced insanity due to boat incident. Probably figured he couldn't keep Sierra safe with all these demonbane around so he goes in for the kill, figures out he offed dad of the one who gave him his chance in life. He then thanks Isaac for giving him a chance while taking a bolt to the forehead.
>>
>>42143098
Which fits. At this point for all we know it could be true.
>>
>>42143084
Should we continue the cycle by killing Isaac, and then be killed by Rowan who winds up adopting our daughter a decade later?
>>
>>42143102
Uh. Sure, why not. Just make sure Ranthix finds the daughteroo and everything will work out.
>>
>>42143102
nah, we end the cycle by having harveys child

we gotta call Isaac about somehow hauling all of this home so we can go through it over several weeks.

and yes, I do mean ALL of it.
>>
>>42143138
Well this is technically our inheritance, in good and in bad. I doubt anyone is alive to tell us about moms secret imperiate cache.
>>
>>42143138
Yeah. Dead or Alive, this stuff is coming with us.
>>
So any guesses for who ransacked the place? Who could have know about it?
>>
>>42143175
Isaac, obviously.
>>
>>42143175
im guessing dad did, approximately 12 years ago, right before he got murdered and trapped in some kind of infernal light-based soultrap. Or it was isaac.
>>
>>42143060
Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, and their acts during WW2, Hugo Boss made snazzy clothing. If Issac can't see how cool demon form Sierra would look in uniform, that's his problem.

>>42143138
I'm seriously hoping the mirror portal is mobile, it'll make it a lot easier on us if it is, and make life a bitch if it isn't.
>>
>>42142765
>>Continue rummaging through secret Nazi trunk.
After we're done rummaging, we can get all the non-document stuff outside, where Moriah can tell us which of it is enchanted and which of it isn't.

And then we can wear the Nazi stuff because let's face it: Nazis have the coolest military uniforms in history.
>>
>>42143202
Eh. We can just go explore other places with it if it changes. But seriously, we need to test it and see.
>>
>>42143202
I wouldn't risk going demon form while wearing it.
>>
>>42143202
Please don't put on the uniform in demon form. Sierra's on fire and covered in sharp spines in demon form. It would rek the uniform.

agreed, although if we could get a fireproof, pre-holed version made, we should wear that fo days.
