You are Cleya, a young Beholder Soulborn. You go to school at Egwen Girls Convent and you are studying hard to be a wizard.

You are second-in-command to one of the Adventuring Clubs parties: Fell Storm, registered as an evil party. With the team leader in the infirmary recovering, you are now in command.

Your first task is to pick a substitute team member. Right now its you, Evrumine, and Syphoebeus. Kittrane and Nevyn are unable to play for medical reasons, and Chame...you'd rather fight the entire Westlake Academy team on your own whilst naked and blindfolded than work alongside Chame right now!

“Ok, so who put their names forwards again?” you ask Phoebe. The three of you are once again in the tent planning your third and final defence of the dungeon.

The problem is that next you'll be facing a team from Westlake Academy and from the brief discussion you had with the Daves they are well-equipped with expensive magic items, and the Academy hires some of the best soldiers to teach them how to fight.

“Let's see” Phoebe consults her list “all of the good team are out, they'll be running the dungeon later, so um, Calluna and Lucinda said they'd be interested in joining Fell Storm, or we could try asking Nataline or Tisania if they'd be interested.”
>>
Evrumine screws up her face “Only Calluna has experience in the dungeon” she says doubtfully “The others might just get in the way.”

“Lucinda could be very could at confusing and slowing down the opposition” says Syphoebeus, then nods at Evrumine “but maybe we should just keep it to us three. How are we for defenders?”

“That's the good news” you pick up a piece of parchment and adjust your glasses “due to the experience of Westlake Academy, the traps have been toughened up, and we have forty orcs – a mix of archers and axe-wielders and an ettin.”

“So who is going to be joining us?” Evrumine asks “Calluna is the only real choice, no?”

Both of them look to you as the leader.

Who will be your new Team Member?

>Calluna
>Lucinda
>Nataline
>Tisania

With one martial team member down we can probably use the physical backup.
Too bad Phaysis is out for this fight.

Calluna, defending the wizard. Staying together is best, and let the dungeon wear them down a bit before they fight.

“Calluna is the only one with real experience” you say, nodding “Evrumine, go and tell her to get ready would you?” As Evrumine heads out, you add to Phoebe “We'll stay at the back, near the summoning, let the dungeon wear them out.”

“And if it doesn't?” she asks with a raised eyebrow.

“Then we'll wear them out” you say with determination. You pause and part turn “Yes, I got that just after I said it, Cham-” Ah dammit, Chame isn't even with you. You grit your teeth.

Phoebes look conveys what she is thinking about....that whole situation.

“Don't say anything” you say to Phoebe.

She holds up her hands in mock surrender “Ok, ok...”

You wait for the other two girls in silence.

XXX

You all take up your positions, and wait, and wait....and wait...

“I'm bored!” whines Evrumine, for the ninth time. Not that you're keeping count or anything....

“Should we, maybe go and find them?” asks Calluna.

“Just wait here” says Syphoebeus, taking a seat on a rock “they'll get here, eventually.”

“But I'm bored!” wails Evrumine, ten times now “Can I go find them Cleya, please? I promise I'll come straight back.”

“I could send an elemental or something instead” offers Calluna. She is pacing slowly, as Evrumine hops from foot to foot, and Phoebe seems utterly at peace.

“Be patient” advises Phoebe “if you can't, then I dunno, go train with the orcs or something.

Ranks of orcs wait at the top of the stairs, as well as a few around the wizard.

In truth, you hate waiting too, but Professor Sallazar always emphasised how important mental discipline was to be a wizard. Still maybe something to distract yourselves would be useful.

Planar Binding (and similar) are long duration.

Regular summonining spells are short term

so going with

Calluna summons an elemental to scout, Phoebe summons one to fight, plus long-term spells (shield, stoneskin) are cast.

Writing, no rolls needed.

“Calluna you send an elemental to find them” you start giving orders “Phoebe, whatever elementals you can call to help us fight would be good to, and we all need whatever spells will protect us, but only long term. They might not be here for a while.”

“Ok” says Calluna “I know just the elemental for the task to, no one will suspect a pool of water.”

You try to wrap your head around that idea “you mean, other than the fact that its walking around?” you ask her.

Calluna gives you a worried look “is that unusual?”

“Air elemental” you tell her “and make sure it sticks close to the ceiling, and its quiet.”

As Calluna casts her spell, you cast yours as Phoebe starts drawing a circle on the ground, preparing to call up her storm elemental.

“What do I do?” asks Evrumine, bounding on the balls of her toes.

“Be patient?” you suggest with a smile.

Evrumine groans and paces about, swinging her axe in boredom.

xxx

With your spells in place, and Phoebes storm elemental orbiting her, you wait for Callunas air elemental to return. It flies up to her and babbles excitedly, it looks like a swirling mass of air, with the suggestion of a face in there, somewhere.

Evrumine rushes over, eager for news

Calluna nods as it gives its report and then says to you “I think they stopped for dinner or something.”

Wait, what?

“Why?” you ask her, confusion lacing your voice “what could they possibly gain from that?”

“They're here” Calluna indicates on the map, right at the other end of the long secret passage that would take them straight to the summoning chamber where you are...you have a bad feeling about this...

“And one of them is sat down and has a crystal ball out” she says. Scrying...great.

“And the others are piling red gems into a bag” says Calluna.

You try and piece all this together “can the elemental tell what sort of gems?” you ask.

Calluna confers with her elemental “she says they smell like fire.”
>>
Wait, red gems, fire. Fireball gems? You think you know what their plan is...

“How many gems?” you ask, your heart starting to beat faster.

Calluna confers with her elemental again “maybe thirty she thinks” says Calluna “why?”

Syphoebeus' eyes go wide, just as you start to speak “So lots of explosive fire gems” you say, in a single bag, their mage scries on us, whilst they sneak down the passage, throw the bag in here and-”

“Boom” finishes Phoebe.

There's a moment as you all think about that.

“That's cheating!” says Evrumine “they shouldn't have that many magic items!”

“Groups of weaker items like fire gems or pearls of power count as a single item” you say as you all approach the other end of the secret passage “but they're one-use, sounds expensive to throw them all at us in one go.”

“They're rich” Syphoebeus reminds you.

“So what do we do?” asks Evrumine “block the door?”

“That many gems” you say, thinking “might create a big enough blast that it'll blow the door off, and still be enough to kill us by the competition rules.”

“Oh” she says, disappointed.

“If they won't come to us” says Syphoebeus “maybe we should go to them?”

“Or send the green hollow guys” says Calluna, you think she's talking about the orcs.

With a bag of explosive gems maybe on its way to you right now, and your foes at the other end of the dungeon, what do you do?

>>

seconding
Going to them is completly retarded, especially since they are in a spot where we can literally not dodge and only Calluna could even hope to escape.
>>
>>42165556
That's why the orcs go to them from the other side. They force the party to get in the narrow corridor, where using explosives is dangerous for everyone, or we charge them into melee before they can attack.
>>
>>42165570
>where using explosives is dangerous for everyone
Assuming these super rich guys don't have items for fire immunity, which they are basically guaranteed to have.
>>

Just alone because of Kittrane they would have brought that,
If you lug around massive amounts of fireballs in a bottle, you bring fire protection.
Its basic common sense.

Thats a poor plan because it means allwoing them to force a draw at will. And assumes this isn't a illusion to lure us out to begin with.

Second, bringing both wizard and demon.

Defeating the demon and the wizard is the win condition. Moving him with us to them is making it even easier for them to win.
>>
>>42165654
We aren't going to them, hopefully, and leaving him alone while we move away when they have a bomb and are in the secret passage that goes straight to the summoning chamber is probably worse.
>>
>>42165532
Why not just set things up to detonate the gems prematurely? Figure out who is holding the gems and throw a Fire elemental at it from Calluna? Or maybe jusr block the passage far enough down the tunnel they can't just blast their way out?

Its a tie, so either vote would have to be ignored, I don't see how ignoring the CHARGE YOLO votes is any worse than ingoring the votes that had a plan.
>>
Leave the wizard here, but call up the demon to defend him at least
>>
>>42165798
How is breaking a tie one way less or more railroading and ignoring votes than breaking it another way?

Besides the fact that his point was clearly more telling anons hopw utterly retarded they are for making sucha dumb decision just because they can't be assed to put the slightest bit of thought into creative actions and just copy whatever default they see.

Which is perfectly legit criticism, because idiocy like this sucks the fun out of the story hard.
Its just like the Kittrane RAGE choice, where anons were explicitly told it wqas going to make us lose and they did it anyway.

Bad rolls had nothing to do with it, we rolled well both times afterwrads.

>>42165951
It didn't. The way was already open, it wasn't a now or never choice. Berserker rage is a class power. It would have always been available, besides the point that Kittrane didn't get a new power from it.

Assuming that such an opportunity ever came up where it was no risk (unlikely), this just means she'll get a different power instead.

>>
>>42165988
>You can't see the future anon.
I can make predictions based on available information. Running straight to people who have massive amounts of fireball gems and try fighting them in a narrow corridor when they know we are coming thanks to scrying resulting in loss does not require great prophetic ability.

>>42166005
Kittrane can, its a demonic ability.
>>
>>42166010

Unlesy you are going to pretend it wouldn't have been ever again unlocked otherwise, and was such a great ability we couldn't possibly want to buy anything else, that means fucking nothing.

There is no reason to assume it wouldn't have.

“We go and get them” you say to your team “but first, we block up that door, no point in letting them get behind us.”

Evrumine and Syphoebeus pile rocks in front of the secret door and you and Calluna brace poles, pieces of wood, whatever you can find against it, to make opening it as difficult as possible.

Then you say to the illusionary wizard “ok, time to call up your demon” he nods and makes the final preparations as you all head down to the mass of orcs.

“Are you sure?” Phoebe asks “I mean, charging to meet them head-on sounds like something Evrumine would think of – no offence.”

“None taken” says Evrumine, swinging her arms, clearly getting ready for a fight “I think it's a great plan.”

“Are those the only fire gems they have?” you ask Phoebe.

Phoebe blinks “I don't know” she says “what does that have to...oh wait...”

“Yeah” you say “We block up the passage, or hide from the first blast, and they send another bag with a flying spell down to see us, or a teleport some in or whatever. At some point we actually have to go and fight them, this way we do it before one of us gets taken out at a distance, and when we're close up, they can't just drop them all on us.”

“Why not?” asks Calluna “they might want to not lose, instead of win.”

“Because” you say patiently, as you follow along behind the small horde of orcs “beating us doesn't mean they win, if they wipe us out, and themselves, they still lose.”

Calluna thinks about that “I think I get it” she says “but are we still allowed to beat them?”

You roll your eyes “that's the plan”.

XXX

[Area 5]

You don't have to go far before you find them. The orcs are headed up the long flight of stairs with a waist-high stone wall, overlooking the river and the rocky shore when you hear shouts from the front.
>>
>>42165988
>Your but hurt is coloring your predictions.
It managed to be spot on the last time.
And back then the argument wasn't "Its worth it for a new power", I was told "Oh no it totally won't make us lose".
>>
You all stop to avoid running into the orcs in front, and you lean out until you can see...four guys in the distance, at the very top of the stairs. They've just come over the first bridge and have engaged the first orcs.

You and your team are right at the back, barely out of the doors of the main chamber. Between your two groups is a mass of orcs. At your side is Phoebe's storm elemental, and behind you is the ettin, lumbering along patiently.

Evrumine looks at the wall “Not a big drop” she says. True, she could go running over the rocky river-shore to go and fight them, the river is shallow enough to ford through.

Phoebe points “how about we send some of the orcs through those rooms at the side” she says “and get them to come around behind them”

“Do they know we're here” says Calluna, as the orc archers start drawing their bows, trying to get clear shots at the adventurers, despite the knot of orcs trying to force them back from the top of the stairs “maybe we should wait our turn?” she adds. With the mass of orcs fighting them, and the distance, its hard to see your foes at this range, you'd need to get closer to attack them. Or maybe you could let your orcs do the work?

You have plenty of forces, and options available. What's the plan?

Thats why the write-in said to send in the orcs with many fire elementals.

>Also you're expecting a kid who's new to this to be a master dungeoneer and meta-gamer.
There was no meta-gaming involved and it isn't exactly a marv el of great strategy to conclude blowing up the fire gems would be a good idea. Its reasonably clever at best.
>>
>>42166300
>I don't think Kittrane can get that one.
But other demons can, which means they can transform into huge demons when raging.

Anyway, I'm fairly sure Kittranes thing was more her version of Soul of Light. With the mental influence effect that comes with.

They'd be metagaming on us then.

And it's still unlikely to work without pc support.

>There was no meta-gaming involved and it isn't exactly a marv el of great strategy to conclude blowing up the fire gems would be a good idea. Its reasonably clever at best.

Not that but your entire, she needs to be smarter cause x y z and is clearly meta. She's newish to dungeoneering and leading, and you're expecting her to act like a seasoned pro and act on things like one. She is not and likely will not be for some time.

That seems like a farfetched claim to me. The orcs would be more than capable to distract them in melee for them to pull it off.

>Not that but your entire, she needs to be smarter cause x y z and is clearly meta.
You mean my entire thing I never said?
I only said should work on her INT because her deduction is very very faulty and way beneath what one should expect from someone her age with significantly above average intelligence.
She is supposed to be the brains of Fel Storm.
>>
>>42166333
>and you're expecting her to act like a seasoned pro and act on things like one
Except not, because none of those things are extremly complex knowledge or require a lot of experience to figure out.
Its pretty straightforward logical stuff.
Seriously, I don't get why this makes you so upset.
>>
>>42166333
>and you're expecting her to act like a seasoned pro and act on things like one
Not him, but you are starting to be unreasonable.
>Dudes got a lot of fire gems
>blow up fire gems is a good plan
>dudes with alot of dangerous fire gems are likely to invest in fire protection so they can use them safely in melee with most of our group being melee focused
Isn't super advanced. Its definitly something you could expect someone like Cleya to figure out. You should remember stats wise she is smarter than you and me.
>>
>>42166353
Yeah but how would they know what Kittrane could do? They'd literally have to be cheating metagaming for pic feeds or bribing people for info.

>>42166366
>That seems like a farfetched claim to me. The orcs would be more than capable to distract them in melee for them to pull it off.
They're seasoned, wealthy, they scried us, and if they're super genius metagaming smart like you say they are they would most certainly know the gems would be a prime target.

>I only said should work on her INT because her deduction is very very faulty and way beneath what one should expect from someone her age with significantly above average intelligence.
>She is supposed to be the brains of Fel Storm.

Again you're expecting someone new, without a lot of money or insight to what money can do, anticipating what you're anticipating from past experiences she does not have. It obvious to you, but you've played how many RPg games and have developed a mindset for it. She does not have the mindset for this then, it's something you get from experience.

>>42166383

>>
>>42166406

I really don't get your constant hyperbole of intelligence.
Using fire protection when one of your most dangerous opponents uses a lot of fire, and you have fire AoE is not super genius smart metagaming.

>Again you're expecting someone new, without a lot of money or insight to what money can do, anticipating what you're anticipating from past experiences she does not have
No, no one does that. It doesn't require anymore experience than knowing fire protection items exist, which she is guaranteed to have given her intense interest in wizardry.

No one is. Its incredibly basic logic.

“Stay with us” you tell Evrumine “don't go running off on your own”

Evrumine gives you a stubborn look, but stays by you.

“Split up and get around behind” you tell the nearest orcs, adding to the ettin “ok, you two, you're up, go get them.”

“Go smash now” growls one of the ettins heads as the other just bares its fangs.

Calluna starts summoning her fire elementals, waiting until she has a few before sending them forwards. Ahead of you the mass of orcs starts to think out, as some head down the side passage. They might take a while, but eventually they should hit these guys from the rear.

Then a series of explosions sound through the cavern, accompanied by bursts of fire. When its over most of the orcs that were pushing forwards, as well as all of the archers, are gone

Fortunately you and the rest of the party where too far back to be hit by the barrage of fireballs.

“Looks like they still have plenty of those gems” says Syphoebeus wryly, as the remaining orcs rush forwards with the ettin, and engage them on the stairs.

“Now can we attack?” asks Evrumine, hopping from foot to foot

“Look!” says Calluna. You follow her pointed finger to see....a big blur moving along the river shore.

You look back at the four adventurers battling your ettin and orcs, are they illusions? Is the blur an invisible person, or people? An illusion?

“Calluna” you say quickly “send one of your fire elementals down.”

At Callunas command the lone fire elemental streaks away to the blur moving along the river...only to disappear before it can get to them, banished maybe.

“Ok, it's them” says Evrumine, hopping up onto the ledge, ready to jump down to face them. At the same time Calluna asks “want me to send the rest?” she has four more elementals, plus Syphoebeus still has hers.
>>

“Phoebe” you say, “would you mind dispelling that?” you point to the blur.

“One dispel, coming up” she says, starting to cast her spell. At the same time you say to Calluna “ok, send in the elementals too, lets make life difficult for them.”

Calluna nods and her fire elementals dart forwards, with the storm elemental not far behind.

You wait, holding your breath as Syphoebeus completes her spell, there is a small flash of light and....nothing happens, the blur is still there, illusion or invisible attackers, you are unsure.

Huh, well maybe the fire elementals will show you if someone is there or not.

As the elementals race towards the blur there is a flash of magic, and all of the fire elementals disappear, Calluna hisses in annoyance. Only the storm elemental, moving slower than the others is spared.

The blur fades...to reveal three young men. All are dressed in armour.
The one in the lightest armour has his hands stretched forth, as if he has just finished casting a spell.
One in heavy armour is carrying a sword and shield.
One in medium armour has only a shortsword.

With their invisibility broken they charge forwards, as the storm elemental moves to attack them. It is blocked by the heavily armed fighter, and the team member with the short sword dodges around the elemental and throws high in the air towards you...a red gem.

“Down!” you yell as loudly as you can.

It hits nearby and you are all struck by a wash of flame as it explodes. Fortunately, it was a long shot at this range and it wasn't as bad as it might have been.

-Phoebe hit the armoured guy with lightning- you send via the telepathic bond, no need for shouting orders when your foes are this close

-Calluna, protect Evvy from fire, Evvy, go get that guy who just burned us!- With your orders given, you orient your extra eyes on the heavily armoured guy even as you point your wand at him.

A storm of magic surrounds him as he is burned, cursed, hit with lightning, weakened and scared.

When the flashing pyrotechnics are done he is still standing, just, but he looks hurt, and moves slowly as he fends off the storm elementals assault. Still, all of that should have finished him off, these guys must have some really good magical protections.

Calluna casts her spell, protecting Evrumine as she jumps over the low wall and drops to the shore below, before charging forwards. Her foe draws a second sword as he rushes to meet her. He tries to sidestep her initial charge but she manages to catch him with a flailing axe strike, throwing him back.

He quickly recovers and starts to dance around Evrumine, making quick, slashing attacks.

[Evrumine HP 17/29]

Evrumine chases him around, but can't seem to catch him.

Your next round of eye-rays suddenly splash against a barrier surrounding you. Reaching out you realise you are captured in a tiny globe of force. You can see the smirking expression of the Westlake spellcaster, as he turns his gaze from you to Syphoebeus.

In the distance, the ettin falls with a long, low moan as it hits the ground. Seems your foes might be getting some reinforcements soon, once the orcs are dealt with.

The member of Westlake in heavy armour seems unable to hit the storm elemental, but it seems unable to do much to hurt him.

Yeah, sorry about that, I misread the rules a little.

I still think that targeting the caster with something that has a good chance of taking him out of the fight might be a better idea than heaping another blow the guy that's about to get enfeebled and blasted and feared and charged by a minotaur girl, though.

First things first, you need to free yourself. You open your largest eye, set high upon your forehead. Normally you need to aim this properly, but with the force globe surrounding you, that isn't needed. You feel the magic of the force spell resisting, albeit briefly, and then it disappears.

Now free, you fire magical rays of light at the swordsman dodging Evrumines attacks, even as you aim your wand at the enemy spellcaster, magic erupting towards him.

The swordsman is struck by the rays and engulfed in flames, crumpling to his knees, he manages to get he head up just in time to see Evrumines axe coming down towards him.

He hits the floor with a thud and is out of the fight.

A lightning bolt connects Syphoebeus and the heavily armoured warrior, and he too crashes to the ground, defeated.

However it seems the enemy mage managed to resist your spell. Bolt of magical force leap from his hands and slam into Syphoebeus. She has just enough time to give a surprised “ouch...” before she too falls.

In the distance the last of the orcs on the stairs falls, and the illusion of an enemy adventuring team rushes down the stairs towards you. In the distance you hear the pounding of feet – the orcs sent to surprise them from behind will arrive soon.

Evrumine turns towards the enemy mage, who now faces you all alone. He backs us, before removing from his pockets a double fist-full of red gems.

Fire gems supposedly explode when they are affected by fire, you're about to find out if that is true.

-Evvy get back- you warn her -This might get dangerous-

Evrumine jogs back away from the enemy mage as you fire off both of your flamestrike eye-rays at the spellcaster and-

BOOM!

You and the others pick yourselves up as the echoes of that slowly die away.

In a smouldering crater lies the unconscious body of the enemy mage.

“Wow” says Calluna “d'you think the Professor will make me some of those if I ask nicely?”

Your rather sardonic reply is interrupted by a an illusionary adventuring party running up towards you all.

As you turn to meet this new threat the illusion dissolves to reveal...one very tall, broad guy in full plate, carrying a greatsword, and sweating heavily.

“Whew!” he gasps as he pauses, looking around “ah, wow, oh, um...yeah.”

He gulps in air and holds a finger up. You look at Calluna, who shrugs.

“Ah” he starts to talk, then gasps for air again “just one more minute” he says. In the distance you can see the mass of orcs rushing to meet you all.

When he can finally breathe he strikes a pose and says “I'm Igrad, priest of Gatrus. I can see you have bested my compatriots in battle, congratulations! In the spirit of fair competition I ask that I be allowed to face you one at a time rather than all at once. Would you do me the honour of accepting my challenge?”

He's dressed in the same sort of rich-looking equipment as the rest of Westlake, but he waits politely for you to make up your mind.

Down below you Evrumine yells up “yes! I want to fight him, please can I fight him?!”

You and Calluna share another look. Well, Evrumine really wants too...but this guy apparently took down an ettin and a bunch of orcs on his own, maybe you shouldn't be playing fair with him.

“Sure” you say, to Evrumine you yell out “you're on Evvy, get up here and kick his ass!”

“Coming, coming!” she insists as she scrambles up the wall. Meanwhile, you telepathically inform her and Calluna that should she start to fail, or give you the signal...you'll blast him.

You make sure Evrumine is healed, and then you step back...

XXX

You are Evrumine de la Hydram. Well, not any more, ever since your father...ugh, you don't like to think about that. But you still think of yourself as a de la Hydram, because that's how you were raised.

You also try to act like one too. Including observing the rules of honour. As you walk out onto the wooden bridge you think about how Cleya will 'help' if you need it. You push that to the back of your mind, you won't fail, this is your time to shine.

You raise your axe and say formally “Who art thee and whyfore hast though challenged me?”

You already know his name, but that's what your father taught you to say.

His eyes go wide and he nods “I am Novice Igrad, in the service of Gatrus, I challenge you upon this field for victory, and to avenge my fallen comrades.”

Then he bows formally and asks “Who art thee, and dost thou accept?”

“I am Evrumine de la” you catch yourself, and say more quietly “I am Evrumine, and I accept” and then you bow.

The two of you are facing off on a narrow bridge, there's not much room to move here, and the footing is shaky.

Your foe is heavily armoured, and whilst you were being healed, he healed himself. He is taller than you and is bulky and heavy set.

What tactics are you going to use?

Charging into things never fails! Well, except that time the Professor trapped you in an bubble spell. And that time Chame bet that you couldn't break a hole in the wall with your head, and that time you....

Well, maybe it might have been good to think about this, but too late, you're charging!

Igrad sets himself to receive your charge, clearly confident that you can't move him. You bat his sword away with your axe and slam into him, sending him stumbling back off the bridge and on to solid ground. He's barely manages to defend himself as you hit him again and again, leaving big dents in his armour.

You drive him back until his back is against the wall, then you hear him muttering something and his counter attack is a lot faster and harder than you expect, forcing you to step back.

As you continue to trade blows you realise he has gotten stronger and faster, ugh, magic, he must be cheating somehow. Still, he's pretty badly beaten, you want to win this, your way.

You know you can always rely on your friends if you need them. But you're tired of feeling like you depend on them, and you need to succeed at this adventuring. More than succeed, you need to be the best! You won't lose!

The two of you strain against one another, muscle against muscle, neither one giving in.

“Submit” he growls “and I will spare...you...further...humiliation....” He's sweating heavily again, and you hoped his strength has run out, but it hasn't.

You're hurt, and about to be tossed into the water, maybe surrender is the best option? No! You remember why you're fighting, a cause you will never give up on, something you can't give up! No matter the pain or humiliation.

You feel you feet start to leave the ground, and you bend backwards. Maybe this is it, this is as far as you can come, your friends need to carry you everywhere and you'll never be as smart as them, as pretty as them. Even the one thing you're good at – being big and strong and a fighter, well, clearly you're not very good at that either...

You remember the day your father took your name from you, the look he gave you, filled with such...disappointment. He said you weren't worth his name, that you were worthless, you deserved that look.

But...you also remember the looks your friends gave you: Chame, Cleya, Calluna, Phoebe, Kittrane, Nevyn, all the girls at the club, they don't think you're worthless! If you can't find a way to win for yourself, maybe you can find a way to win for them!

You only have a single toe touching the ground now, but you glare back at Igrid and brace yourself, reaching deep within for reserves you didn't know you had.

You push him hard, until finally he takes a step back and you regain your footing. You're angry now: angry at him, angry at yourself, so angry.

[Rage 1 gained]

You throw him back and bring your axe around, slamming it into him. His strength isn't gone though, nor his speed, and he hits you again and again. But you're tough too, too tough for him.

[Pride of Minos 2 gained]

Each time he hits out at you, you swing back, slamming your axe into him again and again, unrelenting, until finally he falls. You raise your axe overhead and bellow your anger, and pride, and victory to the heavens!

[Wrath of Minos 1 gained]

With the bout over you slump in exhaustion. Your cause, your reason for fighting, it seems so distant, so fa- not close you correct yourself. You have a long way to go before you're the best at adventuring.

As Cleya and Calluna approach, you haul yourself upright.

“Are you ok?” asks Cleya
>>
You nod “Oui, je vais bien” you say, slipping back into your natural Torrow dialect.

“Uh...” says Cleya, then you remember what you just said.

“I'm fine” you say “I'm fine...”

“That was amazing!” says Calluna “I didn't know you could do that!”

Overhead a loud bell signals your teams victory.

“Me either” you say, as you take a faltering step. Maybe, just maybe you can do this, maybe you can become the best adventurer in the Junior League.

And if you do, maybe your father will love you again, and you won't be worthless any more.

You are Janrael, Angel Soulborn and team leader of the as-yet-unnamed Good Team of Egwen Girls School. You are entering your first dungeon alongside your team of Safire, Phaysis and Anlanesa.

Before you is a large set of double doors, the entrance to the dungeon.

“Are we ready?” asks Phaysis. That's a good question. From the other side you can hear goblin-like voices chattering.

“We should go in quietly I think” suggests Safire, well, quietly.

Anlanesa shakes her head “rush in” she says “if we go slow they'll be ready, and there might not be any good places to hide.”

“Spells first” you say, casting a protection spell as Safire does the same, and also casts one allowing her to see magical auras.

Ahead you can sense a number of evil creatures, ten, twenty? It's hard to say.

“We go slow” you decide “No point in rushing into traps, or things we can't handle.

The four of you: the angel, the nightmare (n her centaur form), the ice elemental and the gem elemental, all wander carefully through the doors and come around a corner into a goblins nest!

But whilst some goblins are peaceful, these definitely are not!

Seventeen of the small brutes turn to glare at you, some wandering around, some gathered around a fire, others sat on a walkway that goes part way around the room. Many grab small curved swords, others grab bows. One stood at the back, raises some wird looking staff with feathers on it, oh that's ok, some sort of goblin shaman. The Professor says they're mostly useless.

“Janrael, Phaysis, follow me” says Anlanesa, starting forwards “Safire stay at the back.”

You freeze, wait, is Anlanesa taking over?

You take flight and glide over the goblins, drawing your sword hilt and igniting the blade of glowing gold/white energy as you do so.

As you land next to the shaman, he brandishes his feathered staff and the feeling of evil intensifies as a green bolt of energy erupts from it and...stops before it even gets to you. Wow, seems like your circle of protection really is working well.

You swipe your blade through the shaman, cutting him into two pieces, you instantly feel sorry for the poor creature, but before you can apologise for killing him, it dissolves into mud, oh yes, these things aren't real.

As you glide past her, Anlanesa grows in height. From the sounds behind you, she is getting stuck into the goblin fighters.

Off to one side you hear a scream as a goblin topples back, and arrow in its back. Two more are dropped by flashes of light as Safires spell hits them.

A goblin arrow bounces off your armour, and you don't hear any screams of pain, so you think the other girls are ok.

Turning you see warriors mobbing...all of them. Hacking at them with their swords. Anlanesa and Phaysis are handling it easily, but Safire is holding up her hands in front of her face and flinching with every strike, even though it seems the goblins simply can't hurt her.

You try to think of something uplifting and inspiring to shout as you launch yourself into the air again and fly towards the last goblin archer.

Unfortunately, without a name, you can't think of any good thematic battle cries and “For the Good Girls!” just sounds like some sort of weird dating advice given to young men.

Instead you just cut that goblin in half and then return to help the others.

Anlanesa and Phaysis act like professionals, Anlanesa pulping a goblin with every punch and Phaysis is a whirling frenzy of spear and hoof.

Safire however...

Every time a goblin hits her with his sword she whimpers and flinches. You land beside her and cut one of her attackers in half.

“Hit them!” you suggest, as you cut a goblins sword to pieces.

“I don't want to hurt them!” she wails.

“It's ok” you say, as you slice another goblins head off “They're not real, c'mon Saffi, you can do this, I know you can!”

With you standing beside her, Safire finally launches a rather...inept punch at the last goblin standing. Still, with her strength, and hitting it with a fist made of rock, it drops to the ground unmoving, and then starts to dissolve.

“I'm sorry” Safire says, biting her fingers in anguish “I didn't mean to.”

You exchange looks with Phaysis and Anlanesa, maybe this isn't Safire's thing?

Anlanesa leans in and whispers, her cold breath making the hair on your neck stand on end “I think she's just scared, maybe one of us should look after her?”

You look at Phaysis, who sighs and says “must she ride me? Really?”

Whilst you consider what to do, you explore this hall. If she leaves, you can't substitute a new person now.

There are two paths open to you. One straight ahead, clearly the main route for this dungeon, and a small passage off to one side, there could be traps there, or treasure, or maybe a shorter route to the end?

Taking care of your team is what a leader does. You put an arm around the smaller girls shoulders and hug her “it's ok” you reassure her, as she apologises to you, and to Phaysis and Anlanesa for letting them down.

“Look just...” you struggle for the right words “um, I know you like to read, I think I saw you reading Stars of Ynusa the other day in class right?”

Safire gives you a slightly puzzled look “Um, I had all my work done, so the teacher said it was ok...”

“You know Kalier right?” you ask her, she nods.

“Well when Kalier was in the Tower of Screams he kept going even though he was terrified” you say “so I figured, maybe you should try to be like him? I know its scary, but I know you can do this.”

Safire nods slowly.

“And even if you can't” you add, leaning down “just remember, this is just a game, and anyone that hurts you is going to get a beating from me, ok?”

“k” says Safire in a quiet voice. You give her a squeeze and add “so just stick close.”

With Safire at your side, and the others behind you, you head for the side passage, maybe there will be something useful in here?

Behind you, you hear Phaysis ask Anlanesa “What's the Star of Ynusa about?”

“Oh its a smutty romance novel” says Anlanesa “Big muscular paladin rescues corrupt noblewoman seeking redemption.”

There's a pause, then Phaysis says “now you're just messing with me, no way would they read something like that”

Your face burns as Anlanesa says “If you don't believe me, check it out from the library, pages 137 and 271 are where the good stuff starts, I heard Jan had those bookmarked specially-”

“Quiet!” you say “there could be monsters ahead!”

In silence you explore a couple of rooms with noting of interest in them. But in the last one, you find a dwarf chained to the wall.
>>
You sliced through the barred door with ease, but then you paused. Phaysis steps forward to help as the dwarf gives you a suspicious look...and Safire hides behind you. Maybe she can sense it too, this dwarf is evil...

“Wait” you say, pulling Phaysis back, to the dwarf you say “how did you get captured sir?”

The Dwarf groans and rattles his chains “ah a terrible tale” he says “if you free me, I'll tell you and...” he licks his lips “tell you of a secret passage that will take you closer to your goal.”

Hmmm...

“What are you waiting for?” asks Anlanesa “let's free him and go”

“Let's hear the tale first” you say, motioning for Anlanesa to stay back.

The dwarf looks uncomfortable “Ah well, see young miss” he says “Dwarf clans are a close-knit group: upset one, and they all will turn on you. I upset a powerful man, and I was cast out. My name is Gudrul, and I am a trader, and with no dwarves willing to buy my wares, I had to trade as I could...including with goblins. I can't say why they decided to capture me after trading with me for several seasons, but they did.”

“See, a trader” says Phaysis “that explains it.”

But something doesn't seem right...

“What do you trade?” You as casually.

He looks even shiftier “Oh a bit of this and that, food, clothes, all sorts really.”

Now you're definitely suspicious “Why not trade in human lands?” you ask “surely that's safer than trading with goblins, who aren't very friendly to dwarves at the best of times.”

He looks around rapidly and then slumps, sighing “you're a clever girl” he grumbles “well the reason is...most humans won't buy slaves.”

“Slaves?” you ask, recoiling in disgust

“Aye slaves” he says with a leer “Why fine young specimens such as yourselves would fetch five hundred gold apeice on the orcs slave blocks, o'course orcs won't trade with dwarves, they'd kill them, so we used the goblins for middlemen.”

“That's why you were banished” says Anlanesa, her desire to free him now gone “you got caught selling people.”

“Aye tis true, tis true” admits the dwarf “was a profitable business, work slaves, domestic slaves” he leers at you again “entertainment slaves, food slaves, magical component slaves-”

Safire gives a strangled yelp and hugs you from behind, burying her face in your wing.
>>
Phaysis looks down at the dwarf, anger plain on her face “I think” she says, pointing her spear at him “we can do without the secret passage after all.”

“No, No!” says the dwarf “morals is one thing, but let me go and I'll tell you of a secret way to the wizards lair: you can sneak up on him and catch him unaware, a guaranteed win! If you'll just let me go.”

You exchange a troubled look with the others. Phaysis shakes her head. Anlanesa looks unhappy, and just shrugs.

What do you do?

Free one of his chains, leave him with a tool. Make a bet with him- if he can free himself before we kill the wizard he can leave, but if he doesn't we'll bring him to the authorities straight away

Tell Phaysis to smite him

Seconding, its a good compromise in the moral stakes of things.
>>
>>42173627
>Leave him here to rot
I'm pretty sure we can get penalized for being OOC in the dungeon. So its either this or taking him to the authorities or something.

rot it is.

Next update will be last update, next thread is tomorrow, same time

thanks for running Pally!

You back away from the dwarf, moving slowly so you don't trip over Safire.

“I can't conceive of the right punishment for you” you say “I only hope that spending the rest of your life in chains is the right one”

To the girls you say “lets go, there's nothing for us here.”

XXX

Outside Anlanesa says “that passage might have been useful”

“Not that that price” you say as you continue onwards. Ahead you can sense more evil presences. Good, Safire is walking so close to you that she keeps bumping into you, still shaken up from your encounter with the slaver. Hitting something right now is exactly what you need...

From Phaysis scowl, she seems to feel the same way.

Thank you for playing, I hope you had fun.

For your actions today you have gained 5XP and the club has gained 12XP.

Next thread will be in 14 hours.
