Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You ventured into the realm of the god of Sun, Pern. You met his avatar, who refused to work with you, so long as you kept practicing Necromancy. Unwilling to relinquish your power, you refused his offer and returned to the material realm. You decided to seek an alternative method of immortality, but Lathrien was more willing to become a vampire. You decided to help him with the ritual, and he was cursed by Pern to immortality and bloodthirst. You took the long trek back home, finding it well kept by Bathory. The size of the village had increased, local relationships improved and the construction project of your tower well on its way. That is where the twenty-fourth installment of Feral Necromancer Quest ended.

The Cast:

Vlad Tepish: You, a necromancer of great skill, seeking immortality. More than a year ago you found the ruin of an elven temple, that contained a library. Using ancient knowledge and your own will, you have been pursuing immortality and better life for all.

Bathory: Your lover and the reason for your original exile. Once she died, you bound her spirit, so that you would not lose her. You have given her an alchemical body, which has recently proven to be capable to bear children.

Lathrien: Your apprentice and the first Vampire. A skilled, if meek elven mage, he is getting used to his new condition. He has had trouble dealing with his newfound hunger, but you intervened before he'd killed anybody innocent.

Melandie: An elven huntress and berserker, she is a loyal companion of yours with severe anger issues. Recently she has had her leg amputated due to a terrible battle injury, and you've built her a new one through alchemy.

You have not been away for as long a time ever before. It has been months since you last saw the temple, and it seems to have done very well in your absence. Flourishing, even. Perhaps you should do excursions such as this one more often. As ever, duty calls.

First of all, now that you are in somewhat more comfortable circumstances, you feel you really should sit down with Lathrien and talk with him properly. While great power comes with it, it is still a curse that he has been subjected to, and he should be aware of the changes he's going through. More importantly, you should.

You are surprised to find that it takes you effort to find him. Through repeated enchantment and thorough familiarity with the temple you have a very keen sense of any presence in it- not supernatural necessarily, but you find people here. Lathrien is not so easily found, not anymore. So that is one thing.

It helps knowing that he cannot leave the temple during daytime, and eventually you track him down in the library.

'Ah, Vlad Tepish. You know, there is nothing in the books about my condition.'
'Well, I did create the ritual myself.'
'Indeed. It is strange. I am changing, certainly, and not a soul knows where it shall take me.'
'That is what I wanted to talk to you about.'
'I thought you might want to. I am not fully aware of all of it, of course, but ask away, I'll answer the best I can.'

Is it you, or is Lathrien much more confident in his speech? He almost reminds you of yourself a little. You did not think that the curse would change his personality, but it is a spell of divine power. It could have done much more than you thought it would.

>Ask about his new powers.

'I cannot help but notice that your patterns of speech have changed somewhat. Have you noticed any changes in your personality?'
'I think there might be some. Or it might simply be the mix of power and time to think. I do not need to fear much anymore, after all.'
'That said...'
'It has been a rather sudden change, has it not?'
'Exactly.'
'Well, at the least my mind, my thoughts and beliefs remain the same. I've been keeping notes, checking in with Melandie, that sort of thing. Perhaps it is a more devious change, but at the moment at least, it is not taking my mind.'
'Speaking of Melandie, how are you two doing?'
'Well enough, I suppose. She is having some trouble adjusting. She sees this as a problem to overcome, not power to embrace.'

'You better. If your basic modes of conversation changed so quickly, you need to keep a close check on your emotions.'
'Right.'
'So, what else have you found about the condition? Strengths, weaknesses, so on?'
'Well, as you predicted, physically I am better than I ever could be in life. Necromancy does seem to come a little easier for me too. As for weaknesses, aside from the obvious, I find that I have to be much more conscious about my body. I do not breathe unless I make myself, my heart beats only at will, hell I need to remind myself to blink. But I'm getting used to it.'
'About the blood.'
For a second, his eyes light up, until he makes himself serious once more.
'Yes. I need it. That would not be so bad, if I did not want it so badly. It feels incredible to feed and if I let myself, I just want to feed until there is no heart left beating.'
'That is a problem.'
'It isn't. I can control myself.'
'It is. We should try to make some blood with alchemy.'
His face scowls up in disgust for a second.
'Yeah. Yeah, I guess we should try. I guess it might work.'
'Good. We shall get to it later.'

It is not surprising, and so it is not uncomfortable to find that you cannot find anything. You find some enjoyment in going through old necromancy texts- you know the theory well enough yourself by now, but it is a comfort to find that others have come to the same conclusions as you in times gone by.

This could be bad. You slam the book shut and go running to where you heard her voice. You break into a sprint before you realize where you are going. The spider cages. Well, about a hundred things could go wrong with that.

When you get there, you see melandie holding onto the legs of one of your spider-keeper homunculi. She has a shocked look on her face, and the homunculus has lost its upper body above the waist.

'Shit, Vlad. They just went fucking nuts.'

Nat 1! Critical failure.

You slide comfortably into a trance. You reach out to the spirits and the spirits reach back. Before you can react a thousand thousand spirits grab onto you and drag you along with them. Your astral self is dragged into the earth at incredible speed.

There is pain, of course. They got you good. You feel a little numb. You are not really used to these little astral excursions, but this one is the least comfortable by far. You are being dragged along, through the dirt, into a cave system, and further on yet.

If you do not risk anything you shall not learn anything. While it is painful, you need to go on, you need to see what this is about. Severe spiritual anomalies are not something you want to reach within your sanctum no matter how dangerous investigations thereof might be.

As you keep going through the flow you notice something truly strange. The spirits- arachnid spirits you'd guess- start merging. Where there were thousands around you, now there are dozens- all much stronger than the few you were taken by surprise before. None reach quite the power of Grish or Pern, but the sheer quantity, when added up is like nothing you've ever seen before.

You know you've moved a hundred miles north, and are under the mountains now. A little further on, you sense a massive spiritual presence, and as you do, the spirits around you cease to be separate- they become a single whole without merging together.

Well, that's fucking weird.

You had sensed this as a possible possibility for immortality. It was always an abstract to you, some vague sense of possibility, but having seen an example you now understand what you could have. If you can be every one of your minions, you can be any one of them. With False Life, you could even be more or less alive as any of them.

More information on hive mind unlocked

Pros:

>Your entire army has to be destroyed for you to die. One of the sturdiest immortality options.
>Your control of your undead becomes unparalleled and each one of your minions is as competent as yourself on the battlefield
>You can be several places at the same time

Cons:

>While it does not actually affect your mind, by the very nature of the option you cease to be human.
>You die in a sense. You become the mind of your undead horde.
>Only one of your minions at a time has your spellcasting ability.

You rush back to your body swiftly and without trouble. You take a deep breath as you re-enter your body. Not enough time has passed for any of your allies to even notice you were gone.

remember not to kill the spiders we keep the for the silk they make, also they would be a great place to plant your eggs if we require more or a swarm to defeat them.

Now Vlad must return to his laboratory, to create the greatest contraption ever made, using his genious intellect, and dark magic!
He must make a crib

Well, this is getting to the bump limit real fucking fast tonight. I might make a part 2, though it'll be much shorter if I do.

Your allies are the ones in danger now. You have destroyed any danger that you face yourself, but your allies do not have shamans of your power in their ranks. You send out your simpler homunculi, infused with simple spirits to send a message to your nearby allies. You hope you do not get any answers.

That done, the crisis is averted and silence falls over your ruin.

Why are we overreacting this much? The spider was pretty cool. It wasn't hostile to us unlike most other spirits.

Didn't it declare we should stop all our friendly advances because we are just meat.
Then he declared he like our taste?

'Very well, I shall be in my lab.'
'Vlad?'
'There are some important alchemical recipes I must work on. We will convene later.'

You retire to your lab and get ready to do some research.

Overreacting? we only got out unscathed because Dead can't count, and frankly, the spiders are a bunch of evil amoral predators who eat all sentient life and hate being oppressed.
